Flagstaff House

At Flagstaff House, atop Flagstaff Mountain and overlooking downtown Boulder, the menu changes daily, so “you can dine with us over and over and never eat the same food,” said General Manger Adam Monette. This allows the Flagstaff House team to “cultivate dishes based off of local and seasonal availability” and “highlights the creativity, knowledge and skillset of Chef Chris Royster.” When paired with Flagstaff House’s wine list, a recipient of the “Wine Spectator Grand Award,” the hospitality and cuisine at Flagstaff House provide “a culinary journey unlike any other,” he said. A mainstay in Boulder for 49 years, Flagstaff House is “humbled by the endless memories created for our guests here at the Flagstaff House.” 1138 Flagstaff Road, Boulder, 303.442.4640, flagstaffhouse.com. Runner Up: The Greenbriar Inn, 8735 N. Foothills Hwy., Boulder, 303.440.7979, greenbriarinn.com.

here to eat their dinner and their smiles,” Fan said. A lover of natural food, Fan steers clear of MSG and is happy to accommodate the dietary needs and choices of her customers. “We can prepare things gluten-free and made to order, and we can vary the spice level,” Fan said. Nothing is served from a can, and natural meats and fresh vegetables shine in China Gourmet’s most popular dishes. Fan’s Egg Foo Young features fried seasoned vegetables and egg patties topped with a garlic sauce, and the Mu Shu Chicken blends eggs, cabbage, carrots, onions and wood-ear mushrooms with a hoisin sauce and is served with authentic flour pancakes. 3970 N. Owners Agnes and Quentin Garrigou expressed excitement and gratitude for winning Boulder County Gold this year. Quentin gives big thanks to the Boulder community for all the support. “We were not expecting it, we are super happy, especially during this time because it’s pretty hard for everyone.” Instead of going for the fancy French cuisine vibe, Quentin said they’re more about a family-friendly vibe that dishes up simple foods with fresh ingredients. “Customers appreciate the prices and that it’s a family restaurant.” At Le French Café, staff take

pride in treating everyone like they are family. Want a top selling lunch item? Lyonnaise is the one. The large salad of mixed greens is topped with grilled onion, bacon, tomato, potatoes and a poached egg. Save room for dessert – if you have a weakness for French pastries. 2525 Arapahoe Ave., C-1, Boulder, 303.284.2265, lefrencafeboulder.com. Owner Vin Rai wants Boulderites to enjoy “the best Indian food” their money can buy. He credits his chefs for giving customers “good honest food.” That means chefs at Taj take great pride in making every dish as if they were feeding it to their own family. “It’s not just a job for our chefs, they are really proud of what they create. It’s not showy or pretentious, just solid Indian food.” Rai thanks the Boulder community for all the support and continued patronage, now, and over the past 24 years. Everyone at Taj appreciates all the continued take-out orders and kind words from customers who express their desire to support the success of this landmark restaurant in Boulder. 2630 Baseline Road, Boulder, 303.494.5216 tajindianboulder.com. The Sink

Can’t get enough of The Sink? You’re in good company. Since 1923, this Boulder staple has been wowing its patrons, including the likes of former President Obama and Chefs Antony Bourdain and Eric Ripert. Originally named Summer Sunken Gardens after a large, sunken fountain in the dining room, CU Alum John Pudlik officially renamed the popular restaurant to its affectionate nickname, “The Sink”. Now in its 98th year, The Sink has been a beloved gathering place, drawing all with its timeless artwork, funky vibe and most importantly its mouth-watering menu. Under the local ownership of the Heinritz family since 1992, The Sink has evolved into a hip hangout best known for its burgers – grassfed beef with all the fixings you can think of. Not into burgers? Not a problem. The Sink offers a mouth-watering variety sure to please all palates, from fresh, light salads to hearty dinners and irresistible pizza. Now offering pickup, curbside and delivery, you don’t have an excuse not to try The Sink’s award-winning food! 1165 13th St., Boulder, 303.444.7465, thesink.com.

Since opening in Erie in June, Birdhouse has soared as a taco, ramen, rum and tiki drinks paradise. “It’s weird but good, and our customers love the eclectic mix,” said Tony Firestine, Birdhouse associate director. “We are lucky to have a wide range of outdoor seating – both an outdoor and rooftop patio,” he said. “Our dining room and bar are also wide open with garage doors that let in plenty of fresh air.” For those stopping by, enjoy the daily happy hour, and customers dining in or carrying out will relish Tartare to start a meal. “Made with a daily rotating selection of fresh fish with avocado, cucumber and a Szechuan peppercorn vinaigrette,” Birdhouse’s Tartare is topped with a puffed sesame rice cracker. Another savory choice is the Tonkotsu, “one of our most popular styles of ramen with roasted pork and crispy onion finished with a little of our Birdhouse chili sauce,” Firestine explained. 526 Briggs St., Erie, 303.997.9630, eatatbirhouse.com. The Greenbriar Inn

Since 1967, the Greenbriar Inn has showcased a one-of-kind Colorado setting. The Inn’s large patios, fashioned with Lyons sandstone, are surrounded by expansive lawns, elegant flower and vegetable gardens, a waterfall, pond and picturesque woodlands, all framed by majestic mountain views. During the day, green and white umbrellas provide shade, and after dusk, lights twinkle from the trees. The ambiance is ideal for a romantic dinner date or relaxed Sunday brunch, as well as a charming wedding and private events space. Menus include the bistro, American classic dinner menu, Sunday brunch and a picnic menu for guests enjoying a fabulous meal by the pond. For an unforgettable experience, try Greenbriar Inn’s Colorado Beef Wellington or Lobster Tail with Seafood Ravioli, both complemented with selections from the Greenbriar Inn’s 900-label wine cellar. Anyone who has not stopped by to bliss out on this off the charts patio – let’s just say – add it to the bucket list. Teahouse Owner Lenny Martinelli agrees that this magical patio is like no other. “The patio offers you the chance to be outside next to the river, surrounded by roses and grape vines, and still experience the teahouse.” With two patios, both burst with vibrant roses planted by the Rose Society, while the riverside patio offers natural shade from the grapevine arbors. Martinelli expressed his excitement to win the award, with this to say: “Thank you for supporting the tea house for the past 22 years. It’s been an honor to serve you with our great foods and teas from all around the world.” 1770 13th St., Boulder, 303.442.4993, boulderteahouse.com. Leaf Vegetarian Restaurant

Shane Jackson is the executive chef at Leaf, saying he has a high degree of “creative freedom” when it comes to menu and recipe creation. Winning the two categories comes as a big compliment, especially since Jackson’s specialty is meat and seafood. If he had to guess why readers chose Leaf, he said it’s likely because, well, it’s tasty and a lot of TLC goes into each dish. “We make everything from scratch and most meals are very prep intensive,” Jackson said. Wondering which mouth-watering dishes customers can’t get enough of? “Our most popular dish is our cauliflower tacos.” Followed by the savory portobello burger, served full sized on the lunch menu – and sliders for happy hour. As for offering fresh natural ingredients, he attributes it Three Leaf Farms, which is part of the restaurant concept. “During the summer I get most of my produce from them, kale, tomatoes, radishes, squash, zucchini.” 1710 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.442.1485, leafvegetarianrestaurant.com. Furry friends are part of the family. So naturally we want them treated that way where they stay when we’re away. Rhonda Beitzel, owner of Cottonwood Kennels, says this kindheartedness is at the core of her animal kingdom. “We are a small business and it’s important to us to build relationships with our clients and their pets.” Boulder County pet owners appreciate Cottonwood’s honest, all-inclusive approach to services. “You won’t find a bunch of extra charges for a pet’s basic needs like play time, walks or enrichment activities,” Beitzel says. That kind of dedication pays off – people and pets love coming back here. Pampered Pooch Grooming

Astrid Gifford, owner, is particular about her groomers. They have to be great; sweet and patient and loving to the dogs. “I really think that’s why people love us so much. Their dogs are scratching on the door to come in because they get so much love and attention,” she said. The dogs are not put in cages until their parents come back, they’re out on little beds. “The love is probably the crucial factor. The dogs are so happy here, and they do look great because I’m very particular about how they look,” Gifford said. Gifford started the business 18 years ago and thought it might last three to four years, but she discovered a real joy for working with dogs. “They teach us so much and make us better people,” she said. 2750 Glenwood Drive, #6, Boulder, 303.444.0508. McGuckin goes so far beyond hardware, it’s almost silly that this category win is limited to Best Hardware Store. “We take an old-school approach to customer service and like to help the customer every step of the way,” says Marketing Coordinator Nicolette Power. “Thank you for voting for us! Our customers are the reason we’ve been able to keep the lights on for the last 65 years.” McGuckin is now offering curbside pickup every day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for customers who want to reduce contact with the public. When people stay at home for a long time, they tend to notice what they don’t like about their houses. “A lot of them are changing up their kitchens and getting rid of old countertops. They are fed up with what they have and want it to look better this winter,” says Tucker Moss, co-owner of Boulder’s Moros Fabrication. The remodeling fever extends to surfaces for fireplace surrounds, bathroom vanities, bar tops and even showers. “We have a great porcelain-like product that creates a shower surface without seams,” he says. Moros Fabrication has been in business in Boulder and surrounding communities since 1999. “We’re quality-oriented about materials as well as customer service. Innovative Openings

Your room might have a view, but how does the window look? Innovative Openings specializes in window dressings. They regularly win awards for their savvy. Kevin Anderson, sales manager, believes their success comes from three sources. First, 40 years of operation. Next, dedicated employees and low turnover. Finally, their expertise in indoor and outdoor window accessories. “There aren’t many companies out there that do interior and exterior shading products,” Anderson observed. “And this summer especially, there’s been an emphasis on outdoor living.” All these qualities make Innovative Openings suited to serve Boulder homes. Anderson explained that incorporating manufacturing and design makes them a better full-service company. “Getting the [home decor award] blew us away,” he said. “It speaks to what we’re trying to do.” 667 S Pierce Ave., Louisville, 303.665.1305, innovativeopenings.com. Neptune Mountaineering

Neptune Mountaineering once again rules the hearts of local outdoor enthusiasts and hit a triple in the Boulder County Gold awards. “The Boulder outdoor community loves to support local and independent businesses,” says Shelley Dunbar, co-owner of Neptune Mountaineering. Since March the store has seen a huge uptick in sales of everything from freeze-dried food and stove fuel. “A lot of people have been saying: ‘Okay, I can’t get on a plane and go somewhere, but I can get away into the mountains.’ Then they realize they don’t have the equipment whether it’s tents or carabiners,” Dunbar says. “We always appreciate winning this award, but this year is special,” says Gary Cartwright, co-owner of The Regiment Shops in Boulder. “These times have been very challenging. We built our business over the years on tailored clothing. With so many people working from home there has been much less demand for suits, trousers and dress shirts,” he says. The 60-year-old local business features everything from tuxedos to high-end denim. Exclusive brands include Bugatchi, Carrot & Gibbs, Kinross Cashmere, Marcoliani Socks and Scojo Eyewear. “Luckily, people are still getting married and need clothes. A student walked in the other day to get something. His grandfather – who was a customer when he was at CU – recommended us to his grandson,” Cartwright says. During this time, The Regiment Shops limits the number of shoppers, sanitizes dressing rooms between uses and offers private appointments in the store. 2425 Canyon Blvd., #F, Boulder, 303.443.2713, theregimentshops.com.

Pedestrian Shops has been in Zoe Polk’s family for 51 years. It’s a balance between affordability, function and style. “It’s things that look cute and are still rugged at the same time,” Polk explained. Black Cat Farm

“For the last decade we have been devoted to taking care of our community through the work we do at our organic farm and restaurants. While our lives and world have been thrown upside down due to COVID-19, our passion for growing amazing food for the people of Boulder has never changed. Through the anxiety and chaos of the spring and summer, Boulder has been there for us. We are overwhelmed with gratitude for the outpouring of care and concern from everyone for the loss of our son, Kelsey. We are stunned by the depth of the community. Lulu’s BBQ

Lulu’s BBQ approaches its cuisine with an easygoing attitude taken straight from a sunny porch in the South. “We’re all about BBQ, low and slow,” managers at the Louisville location insist. More specifically, the restaurant is all about patience when it comes to cooking their signature pulled pork, spicy chicken and other viands. “LuLu’s BBQ serves Texas and Southern style BBQ, slow smoked on Lulu’s Pit, served up with delicious southern style sides.” That approach is a winner, judging by the savory flavors and the melt-off-the-bone consistency of their slow-smoked meats. Though Lulu’s menu offers plenty of diversity in terms of main courses (it’s tough to choose between the smoked sausage, pulled pork, tasty sandwiches or rib racks), the standout flavor is consistent across the board. Lulu’s knack for slow cooking and sauces makes its meats a stand-out, and their appreciation for the perfect side completes the perfect meal. 701 Main St., Louisville, 720.583.1789, lulus-bbq.com. 12Degree Brewing offers Belgianinspired ales and a menu of pizza, paninis, salads, Belgium-style fries and pretzels, plus cheese and chocolate for pairing. The neighborhood brewery is based on the Belgium culture of breweries serving as community gathering places with long community tables, a long bar and a large garage door opening to the sidewalk. Owner and Head Brewer Jon Howland started as a home brewer employing a Belgian approach of diverse flavors before founding the brewery in 2013. His staple of Belgian-inspired beers includes golden strong and farmhouse ales, Belgian whites and quadrupels, plus he offers hoppy and sour beers. “All the beer we brew is poured through our taps,” Howland said. “Our goal is to be a really great welcoming brew pub. We are focused on providing a great experience for our local community.” 820 Main St., Louisville, 720.638.1623, 12degree.com.

Sometimes, chain restaurants boast the best formulas. In the case of Smashburger, founded in Denver in 2007, the restaurant has perfected a unique and delicious approach to the familiar cheeseburger. Their signature, namesake item – a “smashed” patty cooked on a flattop grill at a high heat – is always a treat, especially since the restaurant insists on fresh preparation. The Lafayette store takes these guidelines seriously. They abide by the chain’s winning formula, and any burger ordered in the restaurant is sure to be fresh and hot off the grill. With a supplementary menu that includes a distinct spin on sweet potato fries, fried pickles and other goodies that go perfectly with a burger, the restaurant offers customers a memorable dining experience. Smashburger may be a chain, but as the Lafayette location proves, that doesn’t mean that they can’t offer a tasty, fresh and alluring spin on an American culinary staple. 2755 Dagny Way, Lafayette, 303.926.9700, smashburger.com.

Finding good seafood in a land-locked state is always a gamble. Frequenting chain restaurants or subpar seafood joints in Colorado is likely to get you a plate of imported food that’s been freshly dethawed and robbed of any real flavor. That’s where Reelfish is different. As spelled out in their name, Reelfish prides itself on connecting customers with fresh seafood that’s been caught and sent within a matter of hours. Indeed, as the ownership proudly points out, the eatery’s mission is “using almost all wild-caught fish and ensuring sustainable practices from our suppliers.” The restaurant’s specialty is their fish and chips dish, but they offer an impressive array of other goodies from the water. From Cajun catfish to oysters to salmon and shrimp, Reelfish offers an affordable selection of all the best staples, and they never taste freeze-dried or frozen. 2770 Arapahoe Road, #112, Lafayette, 720.630.8053, eatreelfish.com. Brown, managing shareholder of the firm. Brown says community and volunteer work by the firm’s 35 employees and 15 attorneys has always been a focus. The firm’s longtime offices in Broomfield have been closed since March 16. “We have been very safety conscious and do most meetings virtually,” Brown says. As a fullservice law firm, its lawyers provide legal representation for a wide range of cases but many involve personal injury, wrongful death, criminal defense and family law including divorce. “We assist our clients during some of the most difficult times. We also do a lot of business law for startups such as guiding clients through the liquor license process that helps someone accomplish their dreams. Broomfield Orthodontics, with orthodontist Dr. Joseph B. Dankey at the helm, has been serving Broomfield families since the 1980s, and Dankey continues to expand his expertise. He’s been a certified Invisalign provider for more than 15 years and offers full and modified treatments. Additionally, he said, “Our standard of care with normal braces is the Damon Reduced Friction Braces, reducing the need for extraction of teeth through arch development. We also encourage Phase I treatment for younger patients who would benefit from dental arch development to increase natural smiles with fewer or no extractions.” Dankey’s patients love his flexible schedule and perhaps most of all, the cake party for each and every patient concluding braces treatment. Anchor Physical Therapy, Spine & Sports Medicine

Anchor Physical Therapy Spine & Sports Medicine (Anchor PT) is a family owned, full-service outpatient orthopedic/sports medicine physical therapy private practice. Anchor PT offers transitional plans to progress from recovery to Wellness Services. The culture, core values and state of the art treatment options, with every staff member being committed to offering an exceptional experience for patients and their families, is what sets us apart from other practices. Overcoming the challenges of COVID-19 has led to innovation. During this time, Anchor PT has continued to provide rehab services while growing our one-on-one medically based personal training services in response to concerns of going into a traditional gym. This year they added Class IV Laser treatments to the services it offers, which enhances a patient’s recovery and leads to greater pain reduction. Additionally, Anchor PT has added Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) training this year. BFR can help halt muscle atrophy, increase strength/ endurance without stressing the injured area with heavy loads or prolonged movement speeding up a patient’s recovery. “We are grateful for the opportunity to serve our community over the past 17 years and want to express our heartfelt gratitude to all who voted for our practice. We are honored and humbled by this award and truly appreciate the recognition!” 325 Interlocken Parkway, Suite A-100, Broomfield, 303.460.0329, anchorphysicaltherapy.net. Infinitus Pie

Infinitus Pie’s two most popular pizzas are diametrically opposed. One is the super-meaty Train Wreck Supreme, with pepperoni, sausage, mushroom and green pepper. The second is Katie Pie, with olive oil, garlic sauce, spinach, mushroom, onion, tomato and feta. Add gluten free and vegan pies, and you can see how they earned the title “Best Pizza” this year. Katie Crouse, president of iPIE, started her pizza business when she was 22 years old and will be celebrating 10 years in business in November. “We got our fourth location opened the month before the pandemic shut down everything,” she said. “We have four brick and mortar locations including two on campus which had to be closed immediately. People cancelled their events so even the food trucks have been down.” She added, “But we really feel happy our community is so strong. I want to thank Broomfield for its support.” 145 Nickel St., Broomfield, 720.887.4588, infinituspie.com. Runner Up: The Original New York Style Pizza, 1300 W. Midway Blvd., Broomfield, 303.469.9117, originalpizza.us.

“Lutheran Church of Hope is an imperfect community that gathers together to try to follow Jesus,” according to Senior Pastor the Rev. Dr. Scott McAnally. The congregation partners with non-profits to serve the community and is currently building Anchor House, studio apartments for independent living for emancipated former foster youth. “We are passionate about worship,” Dr. McAnally said. “Martin Luther said music is the fifth gospel, so we bring music into everything from first grade through retirement. I guess you could say we’re formal but not stuffy.” For over seven years, the church has broadcast services for shut-ins and the elderly, so when the pandemic hit, they were at home with broadcasting. This year they made a significant commitment to accessibility by removed the pews and webcasting live every Sunday at 9 a.m. (lchope.org/watch). “We believe saying ‘all are welcome – but not anyone who is high risk’ just doesn’t resonate,” the pastor said. They have had some outdoor worship on the grass field with spray-painted circles to keep everyone six feet apart, since the hardest thing about the pandemic has been the isolation and people are yearning to see each other. “We want everyone to be safe and be well,” Dr. McAnally said. 1305 W. 10th Ave., Broomfield, 303.466.4823, lchope.org. Runner Up: Holy Comforter Episcopal Church, 1700 W. 10th Ave., Broomfield, 303.466.2667, holycomforterchurch.net.

Allison Cassieri, RE/MAX Alliance

Allison Cassieri knows the value of the initial impression. A licensed real estate broker with RE/ MAX Alliance, Allison started as a home stager. She said, “I work for both buyers and seller, and I never underestimate the importance of making homes look their best. Every home has potential, and I help people see it.” She is independent and works individually with each client from beginning to the end of the transaction rather than sharing them with a team. During the last year Allison has emphasized professional photography, Matterport tours, Zoom meetings and other digital platforms to keep the market moving. She said, “People were sort of in a holding pattern and had a pent-up demand for real estate. When it got okay to look again, so many people took advantage that I’ve been extremely busy. I’m overjoyed and honored that clients and colleagues, friends and family voted for me. I take my work seriously and I’m grateful for people’s trust in my skills, guidance and experience. My top three core values are responsiveness, loyalty and trust. I don’t take that for granted.” 9737 Wadsworth Parkway, Westminster, 303.464.1125, allisoncassieri@remax.net. We are committed to providing a positive reinforcing work environment that recognizes the value of all staff and fosters individual growth and improvement. We recognize that our success depends on our ability to live out our mission and keep our commitments.” Like all Colorado residences, it’s been a different kind of year for senior living. “We care. We go above and beyond to listen and try to give everyone peace of mind.,” Ericka said. “This last year has been new for everyone – we have tried our best to take care of everyone and keep them as healthy and happy as possible. We always try to put our residents, families and associates first.” 12600 Lowell Blvd., Broomfield, 303.466.3500, legendseniorliving.com. Deli Zone

If you’re looking for a New York style sandwich, either of Broomfield’s two Deli Zone sandwich shops can help you out. If you want to start your day with a hearty handful, you might want to try the Breakfast Kong or the Baby Kong. You’ll get ham, bacon, hash browns and cheese, and take your pick of two to four eggs, fixed anyway you like them. Manager Kendra Trinh said, “Everything here is super fresh. We will cook your eggs to order – scrambled, fried, over easy – and they’ll never be microwaved.” For lunch you might like a hot Italian hero with ham, salami, pepperoni, provolone cheese, red peppers, banana peppers, red onions, tomato and lettuce, oil and vinegar. You could get the 7-inch sandwich or jump on up to the 14-inch. “We want to say thank you to all the people who have supported us,” Kendra said. “We’re grateful!” 12161 Sheridan Blvd., Unit H, Broomfield, 720.974.0521; 1004 Depot Hill Road, Unit 1C, Broomfield, 303.438.8805, delizone.com. Ooka Asian Cuisine Sushi Restaurant

Broomfield consistently votes Ooka Asian Cuisine Sushi Restaurant as the best sushi restaurant year after year. During the regulations required of the long pandemic, Ooka Sushi has had only pick-up or delivery. The restaurant’s guests and online reviewers have been very supportive. A lot of online love has gone to the sushi Maki roll sampler with miso soup. Jason Cao, owner, said one of his biggest sellers is sesame chicken, although guests frequently mention the vegan sushi rolls. Cao said, “We are doing well with the take-out now, and we want to thank Broomfield very much for always supporting us.” 6485 W. 120th Ave., Broomfield, 303.729.1523, ookasushi666.com. Big Mac & Little Lu’s Seafood Restaurant

If you feel like going to the Florida Keys, take a shorter trip to Big Mac & Little Lu’s Seafood Restaurant. It’s a beachy, laid back place with a great family atmosphere. According to Manager Gabby Mares, that’s because it is family owned and the fresh seafood comes from Florida. “You can taste the freshness in the food,” she said. “It’s like a little getaway.” Some of the most popular items are oysters and the king crab, lobster roll, fish and chips and the almond-crusted hog fish. Like all Colorado restaurants, Big Mac & Little Lu’s has to limit seating, separate the tables, and sanitize extensively. Gabby said, “It was tough at first, but our regulars have been very helpful. We’re very excited to be named Best Seafood Restaurant and we want to thank everyone for supporting us.” 2851 W. 120th Ave., Westminster, 303.404.2722, bigmaclittlelus.com. Broomfield Veterinary Hospital

Broomfield Veterinary Hospital not only provides excellent care for the everyday variety of household pets, they also see all types of exotic animals such as turtles, lizards, snakes and ferrets. The outbreak spread to Colorado this year and we were able to vaccinate hundreds of domestic rabbits.” Goerlitz spoke of the supportive culture at Broomfield Veterinary Hospital.
