From the Executive Director Dear fellow alumni, parents and friends, I welcome this opportunity as the first Executive Director of La Salle High School to communicate with you. I have been in my new position for only a few months, but what has already been reaffirmed for me is what I have always known – that La Salle is an extraordinary school filled with dedicated staff and tremendous young men. In my position as Executive Director, one of my major responsibilities is the operating budget of the school. In this role I have witnessed how important the Annual Fund is to the financial viability of La Salle. As an alumnus I always made it a priority to make a gift to the Annual Fund. Now that I’m here, I’ve realized in a very personal way how crucial this Fund is in providing financial assistance to deserving families. In the past few weeks, I have met with many families who are struggling with their sons’ tuition. In researching the rising costs of tuition for Catholic schools over the years, I found that it took about 4% of the median family income in 1972 (the year I graduated) to send a young man to La Salle. Today, it takes over 18% to send a young man to La Salle...and that’s just for one son. Times have certainly changed. If it were not for the generosity shown by alumni, friends and benefactors to our Annual Fund, countless families would not be in a position to send their sons to La Salle or keep them here. I can personally attest to the fact that your gift is making a difference at La Salle. Of course, there are many other ways to financially support La Salle as well. Below is a list of some of those ways that folks are already using to continue to make a difference for La Salle. They include: aking advantage of any matching •T program your employer may offer • M aking a planned gift to La Salle through your estate •N aming La Salle as a beneficiary in a life insurance policy •S tarting an Endowment Fund for a meaningful person in your life (living or deceased) • Providing a full or partial scholarship to a deserving young man.

Advancement Perspective Dear alumni, parents and friends, It is with sincere appreciation that we acknowledge in this issue of the Lancer, the generous support of our alumni, parents and friends who invested in La Salle during 2010. Through a variety of fund-raising efforts over $1,169,949 was generously donated to the school. Gifts to the Advancement Office totaled $868,957, the largest sum ever donated to the school in our 50-year history. Please take a few moments to review the Investors Report. You will see the names of countless individuals recognized for their extraordinary support. This Report is a testimony of the “La Salle Tradition of Giving” at work. In an effort to reduce costs and become more “earth friendly” we are, for the first time, publishing our Annual Report online. This is a savings of over $15,000 versus mailing our publication to each of our benefactors. We sincerely hope you appreciate our effort to be good stewards of your generous support and of our earth. Your gift has helped us meet the many financial demands necessary to operate our exceptional institution. Parents make considerable sacrifices in order to send their sons to La Salle and, through your generosity and kindness, many families are able to afford this excellent opportunity for their children. Through their efforts a series of events and activities took place that commemorated the 50 years of preeminent Catholic education at La Salle High School. A tremendous commitment was made by a group of dedicated alum to guarantee the success of La Salle’s 50th celebration. Anniversary

- A Year of Celebration -

Celebrating our 50th Anniversary provided La Salle with the unique opportunity to reflect on the many accomplishments achieved during its past 50 years. It also allowed us to look with unbridled enthusiasm to our future. The following is a partial listing of exciting activities and events that took place during the 50th celebration year:

• Class of 2011 secures $14,253,530 in scholarships. The largest amount in school history. • The Lancer Basketball Team wins its second State Title. • A beautiful mural is installed depicting 50 years of Lancer History. • Don Ruberg, La Salle Class of 1972, is hired as the school’s first Executive Director. • The La Salle Track Team wins its second State Title. • The La Salle Annual Fund breaks all previous records of alumni unrestricted giving to their alma mater in the amount of $453,868.48.

• Lasallian Scholars Institute is initiated. Rigorously designed curriculum providing accelerated Honors Courses with an opportunity to take multiple advance placement courses. • The De La Salle Signum Fidei Institute is expanded to both freshman and sophomore students. • La Salle students participate in six Immersion Trips, assisting the needy both in the United States and around the world. • La Salle Chorale receives six awards while performing in the Heritage Music Festival in St. Louis. • Photographs identifying La Salle graduates who became priests, brothers or deacons are permanently displayed in the school hallway. • The Game Day Committee was created to provide increased excitement and enthusiasm at all home football games. • The Lancer football record was 9-1 which is the best regular season record in school history. • Bill Koch ’71 writes a book highlighting the Lancers’ run to the State Basketball Title. • In wrestling Max Byrd was State Runner-up at 119 lbs. • For the 10th straight year, La Salle is awarded the OHSAA Harold Meyer Sportsmanship Award. •T he Lasallian Pillar Award is established to recognize members in our community who exemplify the five key values of La Salle – Leadership, Scholarship, Faith, Service, Community. SCHOLARSHIPS La Salle High School is proud to recognize a growing number of scholarship funds. Many of these funds established by alumni, parents and friends of La Salle, serve as living memorials to a number of individuals for whom La Salle High School was special in their lives. Please contact the Advancement Office if you would like to establish a scholarship fund in honor of a loved one or make a gift to any of the following funds. Raymond and Judith Arlinghaus Scholarship Fund was established by Ray and Judy to assist young men seeking a Lasallian education. Bettye Aufderbeck Memorial Scholarship was established by Jack Aufderbeck in memory of his wife Bettye. It is awarded each year to a needy student. B&L Scholarship was established by a La Salle alumnus to provide financial assistance to families with limited financial capabilities. Rosemary Bova Scholarship Fund was established in memory of Rosemary by her husband Joe. Funds provide assistance to deserving students. Buchman Family Scholarship supports students that have a demonstrated financial need. Robert and Marilyn Burger Scholarship was established by Robert and Marilyn to assist outstanding students who have a financial need. Rose Carrelli Memorial Scholarship was created by the family to assist deserving young men attending La Salle. Cheviot Savings Bank Charitable Foundation Scholarship is awarded each year to four graduating seniors to assist them with their college tuition. Colerain Civic Association Scholarship was created to assist a graduating senior from Colerain Township with his college tuition. Paul Cowens Scholarship Fund was established by friends of Paul, a 1978 graduate of La Salle, in recognition of his service and commitment to youth in our community. Andrew DeJaco and Raymond DeJaco Scholarship Fund was established by Ferdinand and Maria DeJaco, long-time benefactors of La Salle to recognize the commitment and dedication their sons made to academic and co-curricular excellence while students at La Salle. Robert Freemal Memorial Scholarship was established by the Freemal family in memory of his 38-year commitment to the young men of La Salle. The fund provides financial assistance to needy students. Aubrey Rose Hollenkamp Scholarship was created by Jerry and Nancy Hollenkamp in memory of their daughter, Aubrey Rose. The Aubrey Rose Hollenkamp Scholarship provides scholarships to incoming students each year. John and Theresa Huellemeier Endowed Scholarship was created by Jim and Elaine Day to provide financial assistance to those families seeking a Catholic education. Marie Kathman Scholarship Fund was created by the Kathman family in memory of Marie. Funds are distributed to deserving young men.

Ben Kelhoffer Memorial Scholarship was established by the family and friends of Ben ’98, who died at the age of 18 from leukemia. The award is presented to a student who exemplifies Ben’s drive, hard work and dedication to school, family and friends. James Knab Memorial Scholarship was established by Joe Knab and the Knab family in memory of their father. A scholarship is awarded to the top academic student from St. James. Bob Krueger Endowment Fund was created to recognize the many years of service and commitment Bob Krueger gave to La Salle and the young men whose lives he influenced. Lauren Kuhlmann Scholarship Fund was formed by Bob and Margaret to memorialize their daughter, Lauren. James and Lois Kluener Scholarship was established to recognize the work, effort and dedication to academics epitomized by the number one student in the junior class. Donald and JoAnn LaRosa Scholarship was created to provide financial assistance to families with limited resources. La Salle Alumni Association Scholarship was established by the La Salle alumni to provide financial assistance to needy students. The recipients must maintain a 2.5 grade point average, participate in at least one co-curricular activity and be an exemplary citizen. McManus and Halla Memorial Scholarship was established by Denny and Sharon McManus to assist outstanding students who have a financial need. Meehan Family Scholarship was formed by the family to provide financial assistance to families finding difficulty in affording a Catholic education. Tony Merk Memorial Scholarship was created by Rick and Lynn Merk to memorialize their son Tony. Both an endowed and annual scholarship has been established to provide financial assistance to needy families. Mr. Nick Scholarship Fund was formed in memory of Mr. Nicolaci. Funds generated by the family are used to assist deserving students. Jack and Louis Oliverio Scholarship established by the family and friends of Jack ’70 and Louis, provides for an annual scholarship to needy students who maintain certain academic requirements and participate in at least one cocurricular activity. Matthew Pahner Memorial Scholarship Fund established by the Pahner Family to memorialize their son, Matthew. A scholarship was created to assist students who have a financial need. Will Ramsey Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to provide young men financial assistance and the opportunity to experience a Christian education at La Salle High School. - 26 -

Frank J. Rapien Memorial Scholarship, established by Bill Effler ’64 in memory of his grandfather, provides financial assistance to needy students. Brandon Roesel ’02 Memorial Scholarship was established by the family and friends of Brandon Roesel ’02, who died suddenly of leukemia during his senior year. Criteria for fund distribution has yet to be determined. Don and Rose Mary Ruberg Scholarship Fund supports students from St. Ignatius of Loyola Parish that have a demonstrated financial need. Thomas Rueve Memorial Scholarship was provided in memory of long-time supporter of La Salle, Tom Rueve, by his wife and children. Jim & Nancy Ruff Scholarship was established by Jim and Nancy to assist students with financial difficulties that limit securement of a Lasallian education. Thomas Schlachter Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by the Schlachter family to memorialize Tom in perpetuity. James Schoenlaub ’00 Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by the family and friends of James Schoenlaub who died tragically in an automobile accident following the summer of his senior year. This scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman from St. James. Herbert and Betty Jo Schroeck Memorial Scholarship Fund supports students that have demonstrated financial need and one of the parents is employed or has retired from civil service including police, fire or military positions. Hal Shepherd Memorial Scholarship was established by the family and friends of Hal Shepherd. The award is presented to an outstanding member of the La Salle golf team. Robert Sontag Scholarship has been established by the family in memory of Bob. Caroll & Kathleen Staley Memorial Scholarship is an endowed scholarship established by the Staley Family awarded annually to deserving students who show a financial need. Marcus Thomas Memorial Band Scholarship supports students that are involved in the Pride of La Salle Marching Band that have a demonstrated financial need. David Bradley Wick Foundation Scholarship Fund was formed to recognize students who not only excel in the classroom but also outside the classroom. Ronald and Victoria Wittekind Scholarship has been created to provide financial assistance to students with limited resources.
