What Happens at The Dinner Table May Predict Your Child’s Weight Into Adulthood If a child is overweight or underweight, the first person a health care professional turns to is Mom. Mom is usually responsible for what is served at the dinner table and for what foods are brought into the home. Although dad is starting to fill this role, a new study just published in The American Dietetic Association found that “school-age children whose mothers tightly control their diets may be prone to overeating, while those with moms who pressure them to eat tend to be picky about food.” Moms often say the reason they restrict certain foods is because their child has a weight problem or the reason they force foods is because their child is underweight. What the ADA announced is nothing new. Many articles have laid the blame on moms before. However, now there is evidence supporting moms. Maybe she is reacting to the child’s problem that came first, but is inadvertently making it more likely her child will grow up with a weight problem that will carry over into their adult life. Research from a new study with Dr. Jane Wardle and colleagues at the University College London surveyed 213 mothers with children between the ages of 7 and 9 from five London schools. The mothers completed a questionnaire that asked about their children’s “responsiveness” to food. That is, whether the child would typically overeat if given the chance. They also looked at signs of food “avoidance,” like eating slowly or routinely failing to finish meals. Moms also

kept track of their own mealtime strategies, including whether they tried to get their children to eat even when they said they weren’t hungry or whether they believed their children would overindulge if they were given no eating restrictions. Dr. Wardle’s team found a correlation between mothers’ pressure to eat healthy and children’s degree of fussiness over food. Similarly, mothers’ restriction of food correlated with children’s responsiveness to food; the more restriction, the more likely mothers were to say their children would overindulge if allowed. These results were seen regardless of the child’s weight. Dr. Wardle and her colleagues concluded that moms were responding to what they saw in their child. If their child was underweight, it was a mother’s worry for the child that made them force feed, where as an overweight child caused mothers to restrict food. Most health experts continue to suggest getting your child interested in healthy food from a young age. The American Dietetic Association recommends offering colorful foods to your young child and staying away from fast food restaurants or places where there is distraction. My work with obese adults has taught me several other tips to help parents encourage their heavier child to make wise choices at mealtime. Tips from my weight loss surgery patients: 1. If your child is heavier, don’t criticize or comment on their weight, especially at meal time. Keep meals a time to connect with family by talking about what your child does that is kind or helpful. Most obese adults remember meal time being stressful and, therefore, began eating more and hoarding as a means of comfort. 2. Don’t compare your kids. Siblings grow differently. When

4

Parenting Plus • May 2016

one child is favored because they are thinner, the heavier child begins to see body size as part of their self worth. 3. Kids are watching you. If you are eating bad foods and give your overweight child healthy or steamed food, your child will become resentful of you and develop self-hate. If you are asking yourself why your obese child has low self esteem, compare what you are eating to what you are asking them to eat. 4. Get rid of junk food for the whole family. It is toxic and NO ONE should eat it regardless of their weight. 5. If you tell your child to exercise when you don’t exercise at all, it is analogous to telling your spouse not to spend money and save while you spend money with total abandon. It doesn’t work. 6. Lastly, love has nothing to do with size. Keep the focus on what a great person your child is. When you talk about weight, keep it correlated with your child’s health. Make a family plan that the whole family will get healthier. Growing up with a weight problem is complicated. It has to do with genetics, food, and one’s relationship with food. There are correlations with sexual abuse, obesity and anorexia. If your child has a weight problem, begin by doing an inner-search as a parent. From there, elicit the help of your pediatrician as well as a dietician and counselor. Go back to preparing food at home. Make family dinners sacred and involve the kids in preparing meals each evening. Children who grow up appreciating different foods and experimenting in the kitchen learn that food is fuel. They learn that family and friends comfort and love you, so food won’t have to. You look forward to your family vacation all year: the sun, sand, surf. But who invited the jellyfish? Frolicking in the ocean is a summertime rite of passage, but a jellyfish sting can spoil the fun. Here's how to handle it if someone in your family gets zapped by one of these mysterious sea creatures.

About Jellyfish Jellyfish have been around for millions of years (they predate dinosaurs) and live in oceans all over the world. You might have noticed on visits to the beach that many days there are none to be seen; other times, you might spot a bunch of them among the waves or washed up on the beach. There are many different types of jellyfish, and while their appearances

can vary greatly, they all have the gelatin-like composition that gives them their name. Some just look like small, clear blobs, while others are bigger and more colorful with tentacles hanging beneath them. It's the tentacles that cause the stings. To eat, jellyfish sting their prey with their tentacles, which release a venom that paralyzes their targets. Jellyfish don't go after humans, but someone who swims up against or touches one — or even steps on a dead one — can be stung all the same. While jellyfish stings are painful, most are not emergencies. Expect pain, red marks, itching, numbness, or tingling with a typical sting. But stings from some types of jellyfish — such as the box jellyfish (also called sea wasp) — are very dangerous, and can even be deadly. These jellyfish are most often found in Australia, the Philippines, the Indian Ocean, and central Pacific Ocean.

When Jellyfish Sting Jellyfish stings leave thousands of very tiny stingers called nematocysts in the skin. These stingers can continue to release jellyfish venom (poison) into the body. Sometimes, they can be rinsed off with seawater or scraped off using a plastic card (like a credit card or store loyalty or membership card). One old folk remedy touts peeing on a jellyfish sting. But instead experts recommend rinsing with seawater and sometimes vinegar.Vinegar is a weak acid that, for some kinds of jellyfish stings, might keep the nematocysts from “firing,” or releasing venom. Similarly, seawater from the jellyfish’s home environment also seems to prevent them from firing. Fresh water, though, may cause the stingers to fire.

6

Parenting Plus • May 2016

If your child is stung: • Remove him or her from the water. • Rinse the area with seawater. (Fresh water can prompt the stingers to release more venom.) • Don’t rub the area, which can make things worse. • With some types of jellyfish stings, it helps to soak the area of skin with vinegar for 15 to 30 minutes. • Use a credit card to scrape off the stingers still in the skin. If available, put shaving cream or a paste of seawater and baking soda on the area. Then scrape it off. • Check in with your doctor to see if pain relievers might help your child feel better.

Call an ambulance immediately if someone has been stung and: • is having trouble breathing or swallowing • has a swollen tongue or lips, or a change in voice • has bad pain or feels generally unwell • is nauseated or vomiting • is dizzy or has a headache • has muscle spasms • has stings over a large part of the body • the sting is in the eye or mouth • may have been stung by a very dangerous jellyfish

Avoiding Jellyfish Stings Reduce your family’s chances of a jellyfish encounter by swimming only at guarded beaches, which are more likely to warn visitors about jellyfish. Look for a sign or warning flag (some beaches fly a purple warning flag when there’s “dangerous marine life” in the water). Also consider stashing a small container of vinegar and a plastic card in your beach gear, just in case. by Larissa Hirsch, MD

Kids aren’t exactly strangers to concussions. But that doesn’t mean head injuries should be taken lightly. According to Dr. Adam Breiner, science is revealing more and more long-term adverse effects. Here, he shares six things every parent should know about concussions. Will Smith’s latest sports drama, Concussion, is generating a lot of buzz about—you guessed it—head injuries. The film’s leading man is not the only reason concussions have been in the news lately, either. The more scientists learn about concussions or traumatic brain injury (TBI), says Adam Breiner, ND, the more adverse long-term effects they discover. Just last year, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) issued new recommendations to improve player safety in youth football, including zero tolerance for illegal headfirst hits and expanding nontackling leagues. And according to the CDC, the overall number of children and teens diagnosed with concussions or TBI is on the rise. “It’s common for kids to sustain head injuries due to sports accidents, everyday play, falls, and other mishaps,” says Dr. Breiner, who practices family medicine at The NeuroEdge Brain Performance Center—a division of Breiner Whole-Body Health Center in Fairfield, Connecticut—and specializes in the treatment of neurological conditions. “It’s important for parents to understand that concussions are much more serious than ‘just’ a knock on the head—they can negatively affect children for the rest of their lives.” Here, Dr. Breiner shares six things parents, teachers, and coaches need to know about concussions so that they can protect the young people in their care:

Parenting Plus • May 2016

It’s More Than Just a Knock on the Head: Six Important Things Parents Should Know About Concussions Concussions and TBI do real damage to the brain. Concussions and TBI occur when the brain suddenly shifts within the skull— usually as the result of a sudden blow, jolt, or change of direction (e.g., whiplash). A football tackle, being hit with a baseball or softball, heading a soccer ball, falling off a bike, and being in an automobile accident are just a few of the scenarios that can result in TBI. “TBI and concussions are characterized by torn nerve axons, bruising, and inflammation,” explains Dr. Breiner. “If not treated properly, this damage can continue to impede brain function, even long after the initial injury.” That damage can have long-term effects. Because children’s brains are still growing, they are especially vulnerable to concussions. The damage caused by TBI can impair normal development. Potential long-term effects of childhood concussions include abnormal brain activity that lasts for years, memory problems, attention deficits, difficulty handling anger, language impairment, personality changes, difficulty making decisions, “foggy” thinking, and more. “The bottom line is, a childhood concussion can adversely affect an individual’s personal and professional success throughout his lifetime,” confirms Dr. Breiner. Multiple concussions are especially dangerous. If a child is concussed a second time while a previous brain injury is still healing, she may experience more serious symptoms, a longer recovery time, and even permanent cognitive and neurological damage. Since TBI is not a visible injury, multiple concussions are a major concern—especially for young athletes. “Many children return to sports or other risky activities before they have fully healed,” Dr. Breiner comments. “For this reason, it’s crucial for parents and coaches to fully follow doctors’ advice and to err on the side of caution.” The signs of concussion can range from

mild to severe. The immediate effects of a concussion can be subtle or very noticeable. Some of the most common post-concussive symptoms include headache, visual blurring, light sensitivity, difficulty concentrating, dizziness and balance problems, nausea, memory dysfunction, and fatigue. When in doubt—whether you notice symptoms or not—it’s always smart to get your child checked out after a blow to the head. The first and best line of defense is prevention. No, you can’t raise your child in a bubble, but you can take precautions to lower his risk of becoming concussed. If your child participates in an activity where falls or blows to the head are a possibility, make sure he wears a helmet. (This page from the CDC is a good resource for learning about proper fit and maintenance for various types of helmets.) “If your child plays a sport and you see unsafe behaviors happening in practices or games, speak up,” urges Dr. Breiner. “Remove your child from the team if changes aren’t made. While I don’t believe that the risk of concussion means that parents should pull their children out of sports, I am a strong advocate of taking all reasonable precautions to keep young athletes safe.” The standard wait-and-rest advice may not be good enough. If your child suffers from a concussion (or one is suspected), you’ll most likely be advised to make sure that she rests physically and mentally for a few days. But don’t stop there. According to Dr. Breiner, the biggest mistake most parents and coaches make is assuming that everything is okay when a youngster appears to have returned to normal after a few days of downtime. “Remember, damage may be present that you can’t see—and the only way to ascertain whether healing is complete is via functional brain imaging and other tests,” he says. Fortunately, the more science uncovers about the brain, the better we’re able to diagnose

www.parentingplus.com

concussions and prevent negative longterm effects. “Each brain’s cognitive abilities and electrical function is unique—meaning that ‘healing’ will look different for each person,” Dr. Breiner shares. “For this reason, it’s highly recommended that children and teens—especially athletes—get baseline tests (including neurocognitive testing and an EEG) before the athletic season begins. Having this baseline data on hand helps doctors evaluate the severity of the injury and determine when it’s safe for your child to return to prior activities.” And what if it is determined that TBI has taken place? Dr. Breiner overviews three treatment options that have been proven to promote brain healing and health: • Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT). After patients are placed inside a hyperbaric oxygen chamber with an oxygen concentration of 100 percent, the chamber is slowly raised between 1.5 to 2 times the normal atmospheric pressure. This allows more oxygen to enter the bloodstream, and where oxygen concentration is increased, healing is enhanced. Research has shown that HBOT dramatically improves both blood flow and function in the brain after injury. • Neurofeedback. As patients’ brain waves

www.parentingplus.com

are read in real time, special software gives rewards—for example, audible feedback or making a movie brighter—when optimal brain wave patterns occur. This prompts the brain to subconsciously re-pattern itself. • Diet and Nutrient Interventions. The acute (and eventually chronic) inflammation that occurs as a result of concussive injuries is at the heart of why they continue to cause problems. Incorporating certain nutrients and strong antioxidants into a patient’s diet can reduce inflammation and oxidative stress. Further, eliminating foods that can lead to low-grade inflammation (such as sugars and common food allergens like gluten and dairy) may also be helpful. Diet and nutrient interventions are customized to the individual. “Brain health isn’t something most people think about on a regular basis—we tend to simply assume that our brains will always be there, doing their jobs,” Dr. Breiner concludes. “But the truth is, the brain is just as vulnerable to injury as other parts of the body. And in fact, TBI can have more serious, longer-lasting effects than, say, a typical broken arm or leg. Please, don’t assume that concussions are ‘normal’ or that they won’t happen to your child. The more you know, the better equipped you’ll be to prevent and recognize concussions, and to seek proper

treatment if one occurs.” Adam Breiner, ND, is the medical director of The NeuroEdge Brain Performance Center, a division of The Breiner Whole-Body Health Center in Fairfield, CT.The Center is one of the only free-standing hyperbaric facilities in the region, focusing on helping patients with neurological conditions. A graduate of the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine, Dr. Breiner is a member of the Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society, the International Society for Neurofeedback & Research, the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, and the Connecticut Naturopathic Physicians Association. Dr. Breiner has been a featured speaker on the subject of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, as well as EEG neurofeedback for healing the injured brain. He has also lectured on various topics including natural whole-body approaches to healing Lyme disease. Offering a multitude of services, the Breiner Whole-Body Health Center discovers, shares, and implements innovative ways to bring people to better health. From naturopathic and integrative medicine to holistic dentistry, the whole body is always taken into consideration. For more information, visit www.theneuroedge. com or www.wholebodymed.com. Shaming Your Kids Online and Their Self-Esteem When you reflect back on your childhood it’s likely you remember hearing these words at least once during your childhood, “You should be ashamed of yourself.” These words probably made you feel bad because you knew your parent was very upset and embarrassed or hurt by something you did. This was discipline and discipline is an important part of parenting. However, saying to your child they should be ashamed of themselves is very different than shaming your child on social media. For one thing, anyone can see your display of shaming and it’s permanent, making it impossible for your child to be fully forgiven. Parents who shame their children online can’t possibly understand the repercussions of their actions. Discipline is one thing, and kids do need discipline, but discipline with public shaming and humiliation is not healthy punishment or parenting. It causes all sorts of other problems as the parent/child relationship continues. For example, kids who are shamed using social media become better at hiding and lying about what they are doing.

by Mary Jo Rapini

something permanent when you’re angry, tired, or in a bad mood. Think it over for at least 24 hours. 2. Keep family business within the family. Shaming your kids, your spouse or your friends says more about you than it does them. 3. Children are vulnerable with self-esteem because they’re still in the process of learning who they are. A public humiliation could permanently damage their sense of self. 4. If you have any apprehensions about posting anything, don’t post it. 5. If you want to stop the behavior, begin with talking to your child first. It’s common courtesy, and since you are modeling for your child, reflect on what you are modeling when you post something that is going to humiliate them. Parenting a child is difficult, and your job is to protect your child and help them become successful, well-adjusted adults. Social media outlets can be helpful to parents and children, but using a social media outlet to shame or punish your child is not wise. What you post never goes away, nor do the scars they cause.

Bug Love! Meet Your Pollinating, Pest-Controlling Neighbors

by Ashley Talmadge

O

ur kids seem naturally drawn to the bug world.Yet, for whatever reasons, we parents can be a bit squeamish when it comes to the creepy crawlies around us. The criminals of the bug world—the stingers, biters, crop-destroyers, and diseasespreaders—seem to get all our attention. But, of the over one million insect species identified worldwide, less than one percent are considered pests. The other 99 percent deserve our respect. As environmental educator Anne Bell puts it, “Humans wouldn’t survive in a world without bugs. They decompose waste, create soil, control pests, pollinate plants, serve as a food for many animals, and are used in medicine and other human endeavors.” In fact, the advancement of science is often dependent on bugs, as you’ll see in the examples below. Experts agree it’s important to encourage kids’ engagement with their natural surroundings. It’s only through a knowledge of how resources, plants, animals, and humans are connected that our kids can become good stewards of the environment. And showing some bug love is a good place to start. It’s time to meet the bugs around you! This summer, take a scavenger hunt with your child and learn about six of your pollinating, pest-controlling neighbors. Most of these “good guys” begin to emerge in the spring and become more numerous through the summer months. All are easily spotted in your

12

backyard, city park, or nearby streambed. And remember, there are hundreds of thousands of other good guy bugs we couldn’t do without.

The Pollinators

The vast majority of flowering plants (75 to 90 percent) depend on animals for pollination. Insect pollinators play a critical role in the production of many food crops, such as apples, almonds, and squash. Sheila Colla, Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies at York University, says, “Thousands of species of bees, moths, wasps, flies, and beetles contribute to the pollination of our native plants and vegetable gardens.” Sadly, many of these vital bugs are under threat due to habitat destruction, overuse of pesticides, introduction of pathogens and non-native species, and the effects of climate change. Colla goes on, “Conserving our native pollinator species will help us maintain our natural ecosystems, and will help us have sustainable agriculture.”

Bumblebee

Stout and distinctly furry, the bumblebee is distinguished from wasps and other bees by its “teddy bear-like” appearance. There are many bumblebee species, ranging from half an inch to an inch. While they tend toward black and yellow, there can be much variation. Though these insects can sting, they are typically quite docile unless harassed. Bumblebees use buzzing vibration to shake grains of pollen loose. Some plants are dependent on this so-called “buzz pollination.” Cool bumblebee science: Like a canary in a coal mine, the bumblebee may act as a warning. The recent and rapid decline in bumblebee populations has spurred new studies on the effects of human activity on our ecosystems. To do: Be a citizen scientist. Post pictures and locations of the bees you see, helping researchers track local bumblebee populations. Bumble Bee Watch (www.bumblebeewatch.

org).

Red Admiral Butterfly

This medium-sized black-and-red beauty has a wingspan of 1.75-3 inches, and prefers fluttering about damp areas. The caterpillars feed on nettles and thistles (so take care when collecting specimens). Adults eat tree sap, rotting fruit, bird droppings, and drink nectar from plants such as asters, milkweed, alfalfa, phlox, and clover. Butterfly and moth pollinators are not as efficient as bees, but tend to travel farther, thus helping to ensure greater genetic diversity among the plant species they visit. Cool butterfly science: The iridescent properties of butterfly wings have been studied in order to produce similarly brilliant color in screen displays. To do:Visit a live butterfly exhibit and walk among an astounding array of butterflies from around the world. Find a garden near you: Learn About Nature (www.butterfly-houses. com/) The Butterfly Website (www.butterflywebsite. com/gardens/index.cfm)

Firefly

A midsummer night’s dream might truly be found in the twinkling of fireflies over a meadow. These ½-inch black insects are not actually flies, but beetles. The larvae are predaceous, making quick work of slugs and grubs. The adults are pollinators, alighting on a variety of flowers between nocturnal flights. Collect a few in a jar and observe the magic of bioluminescence—then set them free. Cool firefly science: The chemical process used by fireflies to create “cold” light is the same used to make glow sticks. And Anne Bell notes, “Fireflies contain two rare chemicals used in research on cancer, multiple sclerosis, cystic fibrosis and heart disease.” To do: Play Firefly Ring Toss for nighttime fun. Make rings using necklace-length glow sticks; tape a couple of glow sticks to your target post with glow-in-the-dark tape.

travel between plants in search of food (nectar, pollen, or other insects), mates, and/ or nesting material. Many of our food crops are dependent on insects, particularly bees, for pollination. Why are some of our native pollinators threatened?

Research has shown that overuse of pesticides has had a negative effect on our environment. Too often these chemicals reach much further than the intended targets, and have long been implicated as one reason for the population decline of certain beneficial insects. Ironically, many bugs—including insects, arachnids, and other invertebrates— do an excellent job of naturally controlling the pests.

Green Darner Dragonfly

At nearly 3 inches in length with a 4-inch wingspan, this emerald-and-sapphire hovercraft is one of the larger dragonflies. Though they are voracious predators in the bug world, they are harmless to humans. Aquatic nymphs (baby dragonflies) prey on mosquito larvae and other tiny water creatures. Adult green darners can be seen performing aerial maneuvers in fields quite a distance from a water source. Bell says dragonflies are “welcome summer companions as they eat many times their weight in mosquitos, horseflies and deer flies.” Cool dragonfly science: “Because of their unique ability to fly forwards and backwards and hover in mid-air,” says Bell, “dragonflies have inspired the design of airplanes and space ships.” To do: Play the Bug Bingo game, by Christine Berrie. Sixty-four bugs from around the world are featured, including the Giant Hawker Dragonfly. (www.laurenceking.com/us/bugbingo/)

Yellow Garden Spider

With their bold coloring and enormous webs—often measuring two feet in diameter—these large black-and-yellow orb weaver spiders may seem intimidating. But they are harmless to humans, and trap numerous flying pest insects, including mosquitoes and biting flies. With a leg span of up to 4 inches, the females are much larger than the males. An individual may consume prey twice her own size. Cool spider science: Spider silk is

www.parentingplus.com

unique as a super-strong, yet super-lightweight substance. Scientists are learning how to produce it synthetically for human use. To do: Read E.B. White’s classic story Charlotte’s Web with your child, and instill a lifelong appreciation of spiders.

European Ground Beetle

Any kid who enjoys looking under rocks and discarded boards will be delighted to find many of these nearly inch-long bronzecolored beetles. They prefer a moist, dark environment, and like most ground beetles they are fierce predators. Entomologist and beetle expert Robert Anderson says that although the European ground beetle is a non-native introduced species, “their preferred diet of garden slugs and snails means they are usually thought of as beneficial.” Cool beetle science: The bombardier beetle (another ground beetle) has a unique defense mechanism--the ability to shoot a burning chemical mixture at an enemy with great accuracy. Scientists are learning to use this technique to improve pressurized devices such as fire extinguishers and nebulizers. To do: Make a pitfall trap to catch beetles and other nocturnal creepy crawlies. Don’t forget to release (www.bnhs.co.uk/youngnats/to-do/ build-a-pitfall-trap/).

Protect Our Pollinators What is pollination? Pollination is a process necessary for fertilization and subsequent seed production, and occurs when pollen from one flower is transferred to another flower. Why are insects such important pollinators? Pollen sticks to the feet and bodies of insects as they

Populations of wild bees as well as farmed honeybees have suffered sharp declines over the past several years. Researchers are studying the overuse of pesticides, habitat destruction, climate change, and the introduction of pathogens and non-native species as possible causes. What can we do to protect insect pollinators? • Reduce use of pesticides. • Landscape your yard with native flowering plants. • Buy organic and local when possible. • Protect natural habitat in parks and green spaces. • Participate in community pollinator education programs.

Made By My Dad is a small company run by real people, us! Frogglez Goggles were created by a dad, me, who was frustrated with swim goggles. My kids struggled with most swim goggles we tried (and we tried a lot!). They were a bear to adjust, tight, pulled out hair and always slid down the back of the head resulting in the ears being pushed out like dumbo. Needless to say putting on swim goggles was stressful and a battle. Without a comfortable strap you can’t have good fitting goggles, and without good fitting goggles you get water into your eyes. It’s a catch 22 scenario :) Frogglez were born out of this frustration. No pulling hair • No dumbo ears • No painful adjusting • And they float and look cool! Frogglez Goggles are designed for noncompetitive swimmers who want a more comfortable, stylish solution to traditional archaic swim goggles. I know you and your kids will enjoy them as much we do.

and DHA). Because not everyone is able to easily convert ALA into EPA and (especially) DHA, it is best not to rely solely on flax for your Omega-3 intake, but ALA also has good effects of its own, and definitely helps in the Omega 3/6 balance.

Let us take the guesswork out of losing weight!

Our Weight-Loss Programs offer a simple and convenient way to hit your weight loss goals while enjoying delicious and filling plant-based meals and juices delivered to your door automatically. We offer several programs to choose from, including Gluten-Free options. Choose the one that's right for you.

Fiber:You’d be hard-pressed to find a food higher in fiber — both soluble and insoluble — than flax. This fiber is probably mainly responsible for the cholesterol-lowering effects of flax. Fiber in the diet also helps stabilize blood sugar, and, of course, promotes proper functioning of the intestines.

Phytochemicals: Flax seed is high in phytochemicals, including many antioxidants. It is perhaps our best source of lignans, which convert in our intestines to substances which tend to balance female hormones. There is evidence that lignans may promote fertility, reduce peri-menopausal symptoms, and possibly help prevent breast cancer. In addition, lignans may help prevent Type 2 diabetes.

Tips for Flax Seed Users: • Drink plenty of water. There is so much soluble fiber in flax that it is important to drink plenty of water when eating flax products, otherwise constipation may result.

What Makes Flax Seed so Healthy? Flax comes from the blue-flowered plant crop grown mainly in cool, northern climates such as that of the western Canadian prairies and the northern plains of the US. The omega-3 fatty acid and fiber in flax are nutrients that help keep us healthy and well. The flax seed is one of the most nutritional seeds on the planet. And while it’s not a grain, it has a similar vitamin and mineral profile to grains, but, flax seed is very low in carbohydrates, making it ideal for people who limit their intake of starches and sugars. And its combination of healthy fat and high fiber content make it a great food for weight loss and maintenance — many dieters have found that flax seed has been a key to keeping them

www.parentingplus.com

feeling satisfied. Flax seed is high in most of the B vitamins, magnesium, and manganese, but this little seed is just getting started. Omega-3 fatty acids are a key force against inflammation in our bodies. Mounting evidence shows that inflammation plays a part in many chronic diseases including heart disease, arthritis, asthma, diabetes, and even some cancers. This inflammation is enhanced by having too little Omega-3 intake (as found in fish, flax, and walnuts), especially in relation to Omega-6 fatty acid intake (in such oils as soy and corn oil). In the quest to equalize the ratio of these two kinds of oils, flax seed can be a real help.

• Remember to start slowly if you aren’t used to a high fiber diet. Add Chia to Your Cookies Chia seeds add fiber, omega-3s, potassium, iron, and calcium to your baked goods. The folks at Carrington Farms recommend adding 2 tablespoons of the seeds to your batter for every dozen cookies or muffins. For more ideas, check out these Quick and Easy Chia Seed Recipes at the website.

http://carringtonfarms.com

Most of the oil in flax seeds is alpha linolenic acid (ALA). ALA is an Omega-3 which is a precursor to the fatty acids found in salmon and other fatty cold-water fish (called EPA
