Here to HELP. Here to STAY. Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast
Impact Report July 2022–June 2023
STILL MOVING FORWARD
Dear Friend, What a year it has been. Let’s start by acknowledging the reality of this moment. Over the past year, we have seen firsthand the continued chaos and confusion wrought by the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Abortion bans have decimated essential health care access in nearly half the country, including here in Texas and Louisiana. Every day, our patients are forced to travel hundreds or even thousands of miles out of state just to get basic health care we should be able to safely provide in our own communities. But know this: Planned Parenthood is still here. We are part of a movement that is strong and built to last. All of our health centers are open, and we continue to deliver on our mission every day, proudly providing care and education, and advocating for the rights of all people. Planned Parenthood has always been a light in the darkness — one that we know our adversaries would eagerly extinguish. Right now, the state of Texas and an anonymous plaintiff are trying to shut Planned Parenthood down through a meritless lawsuit intended to cut off affordable health care for millions of patients. But we won’t let them. We know that facts and the truth are on our side. And we are fighting back with your support. I remain hopeful. Amid some of the darkest times in our 87-year history, support for reproductive freedom is strengthening. This past year, I have experienced the energy and determination of our movement, where veteran and new supporters alike are joining together to forge a new path in the continued fight for our fundamental right to control our own bodies. I am reminded that our collective strength lies in the unwavering resolve of supporters like you. We aren’t giving up. We aren’t backing down. With allies like you standing with us, we are giving this everything we have. Our doors stay open, and we stay standing — a pillar in the pursuit of freedom and the future we all deserve. Forward Together,

STILL CONNECTING PEOPLE TO CARE
Banning abortion doesn’t stop people from needing — or getting — abortions. It only pushes care further out of reach for the people who already struggle the most to access it. No one should be forced to flee their state just to get basic health care, but that’s the world the Supreme Court and anti-abortion state lawmakers have created. Thanks to the support of our generous donors and the dedication of our PPGC team, we are still able to help patients from Texas and Louisiana get the abortion care they need. While we can’t provide abortion care in our health centers, we can help people access safe and legal care out of state through our patient navigation program. Along with wayfinding and accurate information to help patients assess their options, we provide navigation support that includes direct financial assistance to supplement travel-related costs including airfare, gas, food, lodging, and childcare.
In the first year since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, PPGC: •
Helped over 1,700 Texans and Louisianans access out-of-state abortion care
•
Provided more than $750,000 in direct financial assistance for travel-related costs
With your support, we will continue to defend each patient’s right to control their own body, life, and future.

STILL ADVOCATING
While advocacy has long been a pillar of our organization, this work has become even more essential in the political landscape we’re currently facing. PPGC mobilizes supporters and builds power through organizing, legislative and issue advocacy, and lobbying for reproductive health and rights as well as cross-movement causes like immigration, economic reform, and racial justice — issues that significantly impact our patients’ ability to access health care.
THIS PAST FISCAL YEAR (JULY 2022–JUNE 2023), PLANNED PARENTHOOD GULF COAST: •
Engaged more than 16,340 activists in advocacy for reproductive health care and rights in Texas and Louisiana
•
Brought 108 participants to the Texas Capitol for Planned Parenthood’s first in-person Lobby Day in four years, joining nearly 600 people from across the state to rally for reproductive freedom
•
Marched in coalition and celebrated Pride events in Houston, Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Alexandria
•
Facilitated 1,813 hours of volunteer service to PPGC for an estimated value of $57,653, including support with phone banking, voter registration, tabling at health fairs, engaging young professionals, administrative tasks, and more.
But with progress comes pushback, and we continue to face staunch resistance from those who oppose our mission of expanding access to sexual and reproductive health care. With impressive resolve, our legal teams have been working hard to fight back against every attack. Last fiscal year (July 2022 through June 2023) PPGC received pro bono legal services valued at $3,411,970. We are deeply grateful for our legal partnerships and the tireless work our legal teams provide in support of reproductive health and rights.

STILL EDUCATING
Knowledge is power, and in a world where education has become increasingly politicized, this pillar of our mission is more important than ever. PPGC is proud to be a trusted community provider of comprehensive, age-appropriate, medically accurate sexual health education. Our expert health educators work with people of all ages to provide the skills and support they need to make well-informed, healthy decisions for themselves, their families, and their communities. In June, we presented our third annual TeenVIBE Summit, a three-day interactive learning series hosted by our own teen peer educators with virtual sessions and in-person celebrations for our local participants. We extended our reach this year by including an age-appropriate middle school component, and over 100 attendees joined us virtually from not only Louisiana and Texas but also Michigan, Missouri, Maryland, New York, California, and Georgia.
THIS PAST FISCAL YEAR (JULY 2022–JUNE 2023), PLANNED PARENTHOOD GULF COAST: • Provided 9,487 hours of education programming •
Engaged 6,606 education participants
•
Hosted 565 events (both in-person and virtual)
•
Supported sex education with 70 community organizations across Texas and Louisiana
•
Celebrated 20 years of the Promotoras program and expanded to serve Latinx communities in Louisiana
This year, two of our educators traveled to Washington, D.C. to lobby for global sexual reproductive health and rights!
