“THRIVE”

he proposal arises by three main materials: History, mobility and flexibility. In a scenic enclave of particular importance to the city of Ingolstadt an appropriate balance between these materials allows to think about a hybrid landscape which stablishes a transition between old town and urban. The aim of the contest -site has some traits that enhance the proposal. We understand the idea of place in a comprehensive manner. We discuss this concept of three complementary ways: 1. The place as a Location and Physical Space. 2. The place as a result of a technological Tradition, Constructive and Neutrality. 3. The place as a space for Collective Memory, where the city´s past emerges to support the present. The identity associated with the urban is going to be established through the preexisting, the tradition and the memory. Arguments can reveal the character of a particular landscape. It is to rescue, turning a peripheral and suburban space in a new location capable to foster its own identity. From the local heritage we can build a contemporary image of European urbanity. Thus become a new environment in which elements of the city (the traditional and the present) establish a proper dialogue with the existing layer history and its associated infrastructure.

he old town of the cities, and even more in almost medieval contexts, as in our case, should keep the identity through urban interventions which support the present, but also, allow reinterpret the past through the memory, the mark. The historical cities, like Ingolstadt, have been adapted in all its periods over time, keeping their identity, their features, their marks ‌ their scale. There was a time where the car breaks in the society as a main element, giving priority inside the urbanism, of the mobility of the city. This carries the problem that the pedestrian has been relegated little by little and he has lost their territories inside cities that use to work in other scale; thought to be walked, and not to be circulated by car. They are streets and layouts that they use to have and still have the right scale to be lived and enjoyed. Therefore, the pedestrian must recover the lost territory through the readjustment of the car, but not just in the city now, but in the society. For a Flexible and Accessible Society and City, Flexible in time and shape; Accessible, in time and shape.

he Architecture and the Urbanism, is like to talk about a “Russian doll” (Matrioska). The Architecture must be Urbanism. A building is one more piece of the puzzle “Urbanism”, not just the public spaces and the other urban pieces. The architecture is suitable and sustainable when a building contributes to the city with something else than a use, when it really sticks to the urban layout and become part of it as another element of it. Then it is produced a feedback which is enriching both for the piece itself and for the city. This way, the buildings that don’t behave like that, they behave like “parasites” of the city, feeding from it but not contributing anything. The proposal tries, through very urban pieces, proportionate a tour network in the city in a pedestrian way and discovers historical corners that have been stayed a bit disregarded, through new pieces that appear with naturalness. It is fomented this way a cultural route which allows to be a support of other activities such as trade, gastronomy, leisure and culture. As a main challenge, “Thrive” pretends pedestrianize to a large extent Harderstrasse, and adapt the street to be able to live new relationships in there and create a right “atmosphere”, specially to the pedestrian, the citizen. Also, recover the surface of the ZOB to connect pedestrianly the EastWest axis and the rolled use of the bus station will not prevent the connection of mentioned axis as it happens now.

“URBAN

Harderstrasse is a traditional street where the cars have no place. The aim is to recover the originality of the street. The proposal organizes and condenses all the parking places in the Bus Station, adding some more, to liberate the city from the car. This way, Indostadt recovers the pedestrian flow at this historical axis, but also recovers the views to those facades that give identity to the city, which nowadays stays covered by vehicles therefore parked as rolling. The great improvement of that street and its biggest achievement is to leave every motorized vehicle, except some cases as loading and unloading, allowing free movement of pedestrian and bike path.

ustainable is what it is sustained by itsef. Nowadays the sustainability is something that is focused, or is directly identified with the renewable energies, but if we venture a bit in the concept, the sustainable term is what does not require anything else to be sustained, that is autonomous. Therefore, a use can be unsustainable, but an environment could be as well, also an atmosphere, a circulation … An appropriate architecture (the sustainable) should be sustained in conceptual, contextual and energetic terms , but above all in social term. At this context, the projected architecture in Ingolstadt, must be a neutral architecture, so this way, upgrade the existing ones, which make the proposal to be sustainable, in a cultural, touristic … way upgrading factors as the trade of the city. So, the proposal must respect to be respected. It is two-way activity. “Contribute” to “Recover”.

“MUSEUM I

ngolstadt was originally a fortress town. The set of fortifications of the town (dated from XIII century), stays that well conserved that some people consider the town like an open-air German military architecture museum. Harderbastei y ZiegleBastei, are two clear examples of museum pieces. One of them (Harderbastei) is already serving as a museum and is part of the second wall of the town dating from the middle XV century. The proposal aims to emphasize the historical mark of Ziegelbastei adapting it as a public open-air museum and belonging together with HarderBastei to a cultural axis parallel to the bus station, having a common connecting element among them and the station itself: "the wall". This is an element that pretends to recover the void left by the wall of the town at this point. This connection is enhanced and complemented by the park/roof of the bus station, getting a natural fluency not only the two new squares, but also the axis Harderbastei -ZiegleBastei by their backsides, closed so far. So this way it is closed the cultural axis which orbits around Harderstrasse, and again, makes sense to its new atmosphere.

arderstrasse is the main North-South axis if the town. Historically it use to have the character to link two important entrances in Ingolstadt, the North and the South (at the Danube). In the north, it uses to exist an old bastion from the last wall of the town dated of middle XVIII century, known as C.Spreti. Nowadays it just stays the “mark” shown with some trees, but this stays undrawn and loses importance. The character of the entrance of the town is lost. The proposal pretends, while keeping the plan-mark, to lift one piece to order the immediate environment without harming the traffic and give character generating the transition milestone being sought. The “framework” piece is a bridge which solves at this point the pedestrian and bicycle transit without interfering with the road. Moreover, it is the opportunity to generate a gazebo which provides a view of the best “photography” of the town, a thing that is missing nowadays. A view to the horizon with the “skyline” of the town where to observe and keep the contact with the numerous towers of the town. It is a gift to the citizen and the tourist.

“MOBILITY

he Ingolstadt’s bus station is a key location at the north zone of the town. It is a great extension practically occupied by buses. Both the project approach and the demand of the city agree that that piece of ground is a key to be able to “hold” the new activities, and that it is a chance to boost the town to a better update of it. The use of the station is very important, and to this use is added trade, gastronomy, bike station and culture. All these uses are in relation to a cultural historical itinerary, through the Interchange element (Mobility), the Park-Roof element (Leisure) and the trade gallery element (Trade) and the Media Center element (Culture), which upgrades the place linking both bastions, Harderbastei y Zieglebastei, two key pieces of the new cultural axis. In short, it is a piece which articulates two squares through a park on a roof as a “Bridge”. Thereby it is erased the barriers and everything stays linked in a more attractive and graceful way, becoming the perfect versatile stage for cultural events.

“FRANZISKANER SQUARE: the plaza T

he area of the project has as a southern limit a traditional sacredness square, bounded by the Gnadenthal Cloister and the Franziskaner Basilica. The square has also other important uses as Le Café (old historical market) and others like governmental ones. It is a square that has to preserve that sacred character and coexists with the rest of the uses. We are talking about a space which needs to be flexible and accessible, like Harderstrasse. This square is the continuity of Harderstrasse with the peculiarity that the “order” (as a basilica) is reflected in the spatial organization, and it is conceived as an extension of the Church to the exterior. It is an open-air “Church”. In short, it is an ordination that allows coexist different uses and to be able to keep their several functions, by the spatial flexibility. Also, we should highlight this point of the city because it has a bus stop and a bike station. It is a key point in the performance of the project and the city. The square is an agreement between the church and Harderstrasse.
