The Powhatan County Board of Supervisors passed a proclamation during its meeting on Monday, Nov. 28, declaring Monday, Jan. 16, as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Day and National Mentoring Day. Jan. 16 will be celebrated nationwide as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a day set aside to honor a man who stood for peace and equality and who was the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Additionally, January is National Mentoring Month, and Powhatan County recognizes the need to increase public awareness of the importance of youth mentoring and the benefits it offers to youth in the community, according to the proclamation. The board of supervisors recognized the members of the Little Zion Baptist Church who have joined with other community church members serving from all walks of life to organize an event that would serve to the achievement of honoring both. The sixth annual MLK Youth Day Community Breakfast will be held from 8 to 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 16, at the Powhatan United Methodist Church at 2253 Rosson Road. The event will feature guest speaker Shell Daniels and several performances. Breakfast is $10 for adults and $8 for youth 11 and under. hristmas all over the world is celebrated on Christmas Day, Dec. 25. However, some countries’ celebrations take place over a different period of time and have different Christmas traditions. It is quite normal for many American families to start decorating for the winter holidays right after Thanksgiving. Outside the United States, however, countries display other unique traditions and customs different from those here. In many regions in France, Christmas celebrations start with St. Nicholas day on Dec. 6. Christmas in Spain gets off to a rather peculiar start on Dec. 22 when children from San Ildefonso School can be heard on the radio, calling out melodically the numbers and prizes of the “Lotería de Navidad” (Christmas Lottery), which is likely the most followed Spanish lottery during the entire year. In South Africa, people celebrate Christmas Day with the family often with a “braai,” similar to a BBQ, as it is summer season there. Many people visit Christmas mass on Christmas as well. If you are in Rome, southern Italy, or Sicily, keep an eye out for the zampognari, or bagpipe players — they travel from the nearby mountains to play their merry folklore carols during the Novena, the eight days before Christmas. During the last two weeks of December, Powhatan High School and Pocahontas Middle School students have discovered Christmas traditions outside of the States, working on a collaborative project called “Christmas around the World”. Students from both schools were able to learn how different countries celebrate Christmas using 21st Century Skills, such as creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication. The students researched, designed, organized, and presented Christmas traditions from a total of thirty countries. Twenty-one faculty members from World Languages, Art, Science, History, Career Technical Education, Music, Guidance Counselor Departments, as well as librarians worked as ONE TEAM, crossing their curriculums to develop this high-quality project which culminated on Dec. 15 and 16 with an exhibit of student work in both schools. The days of the exhibits, the students

experienced a fully engaged virtual travel from Richmond International Airport onboard a Boeing 737, which led them to different destinations. Students had the opportunity to discover and exchange their cultural findings, walking through classrooms that showcased a wide variety of artifacts representing worldwide Christmas traditions. At the end of a 60-minute tour around the world, the students reported to the cafeteria/auditorium for the virtual flight back to the United States where ensembles of musicians and chorus were welcoming them with delightful Christmas Carols. The initiative was conceived by Rae Shrewsberry and Jose’ Luis Reyes, both coordinators of this project at PHS and PMS, respectively, in collaboration with their department team members. Christian Miller, the content leader of World Languages at PHS, directed the introduction before students took flight to visit various countries in different areas in the school. There were a plethora of French, German, and Spanish speaking countries presented by the students of Jennifer Campbell, Linda Verheul, and Robin Finney. These educators also took their students on tours to expose their own students to different cultures and languages other than the one they are taking. Teachers have expressed that today’s classroom students come from diverse backgrounds, a variety of achievement levels, and different learning styles that influence their ability to acquire knowledge. The project “Christmas Around the World” moved away from the traditional methods of teaching and brought into the classroom new and innovative approaches. Kaitlyn F., a seventh grade student from PMS, said to Reyes that, “the exhibits were eye-catching and extremely informative and that she learned a lot while having too much fun with her teamwork.” Reyes and Shrewsberry said they were most proud of the respect and model behavior that the students showed during the days of the exhibits. In addition, they also wanted to express a huge “Thank you” to their administrators for being very supportive, and especially to each faculty member at both schools for their flexibility in embracing the school-wide project.

garbage, in a landfill, in a compost pile, or to your pet(s) at home? Our food waste is certainly one indicator of the abundance of food in our country. With such an abundance, it is difficult for us to consider the spiritual discipline of fasting. Nevertheless, that is PUMC’s goal for 2017: to draw closer to Christ through this often-neglected spiritual discipline. According to PUMC Pastor John Hemming, “We plan to abstain from food in order to spend more time with the Lord. This is not about dieting, weight loss, or even physical health. Instead, we will fast for spiritual reasons.” Granted, some of the other things may occur as a by-product but our connection with the Almighty is our main purpose for fasting. He explained that taking away one meal or more, and replacing it with prayer and Bible reading, will help us listen to Christ’s direction for our lives. Discernment, figuring out God’s direction in our lives, is hard. However, fasting, praying, and reading the Bible make it much easier. For more information, contact PUMC at 804-5984438.

A different resolution: being wrong more often By Roslyn Ryan Richmond Suburban News

“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and, more importantly, you’re doing something.” -Neil Gaiman When it comes to New Year’s resolutions, I typically embrace most of the same ones everyone else does. And so, like many others, I usually find myself this time of year making promises to lose some weight, stick to a budget, be more organized, and do at least a half dozen other things that will help turn the me of 2016 into a healthier, less stressed, more productive

version. This year, however, even while I grudgingly promise to pay some mind to health and budget, my real focus in on different, never-before-attempted resolution: This year, I would like to be wrong more often. Maybe that didn’t come out quite right (especially since I’m already wrong about plenty of things, every single day — just ask my husband). What I actually mean is that, this year, I would like to make sure that I spend more time and energy challenging the things that I already believe to be true. I would like to learn more about things I have only a passing understanding of, and have more discussions with people who don’t think like I do. I would like to have my own assumptions tested and, in the case that they are based on misinformation, misjudgment or just plain old factual inaccuracy, I’d like to correct them. The spark for this idea, I’m happy to say, came from

one of our readers who was kind enough several months ago to point out that I had been getting something quite wrong, quite often, in these weekly columns. As Alice Araks explained, I had erred several times when I referred to the United States as a democracy, when in fact it is a Constitutional Republic. Ms. Araks was, I must note, incredibly gracious in her email. And, while I am a bit embarrassed that I went for so many decades embracing this nugget of incorrect information, I thanked her profusely for taking the time to set me straight. It was the first of many changes to my thinking that I hope will occur as I try to embrace this New Year’s resolution, one that will likely lead to some discomfort, sure, but also growth. And if that isn’t the goal of all resolutions, I’m not sure what is.

s has been the case since the onset of “The Great Recession” a decade ago, the new Session of General Assembly convening this week will be dominated by reductions — and amendments — to the state budget. Fortunately, the Commonwealth’s tax revenues have trended upward since mid-summer. This is a welcome reversal of last year’s doldrums when our budget shortfall was projected to total $1.5 billion over the 2016-2018 biennium. The summer and autumn months are, economically speaking, relatively smaller in the revenue picture than the remainder of the year — due to Christmas sales and personal income tax returns late in the year. Still, we can be heartened that the Commonwealth may experience improved private, hence public revenues. The strengthening of the U.S. dollar against foreign currencies, and the recent rise in the stock market are two highly visible indicators of this trend. Closer to home and anecdotally, several businessmen and women with whom I have spoken have acted on previously delayed expansions of their businesses. Each expressed their expectation of a better business climate with the newly elected President, and a cessation of the seemingly-insatiable increase in federal regulations affecting investment, labor, medical insurance, and energy in many states, including of course Virginia. Among amendments to the state budget we may expect increased funding for the Virginia State Police. Our only law enforcement agency funded solely by the Commonwealth has faced flat, and sometimes even lowered, taxpayer support during the long years of the Great Recession and the tepid recovery which has followed. Predictably but sadly, the budget cutbacks have limited salary and equipment support, and, according to many troopers, deeply impacted morale. It is past time to remedy this circumstance. Budget committees will propose increased support for other state employees — as well as local law enforcement, including sheriffs’ deputies. Both of these groups must be supported, and if the economy continues its rebound, it will be important to restore promised pay raises that have been deferred. To that end, I am carrying a bill this year to again dial back on tax credits — specifically on the Land Preservation Tax Credit — to make about $6 million in new revenues available to the General Fund. This tax credit program has had valuable effects in preserving to posterity Virginian farmland and historic battle sites by allowing landowners to claim tax credits in exchange for a perpetual conservation easement. As valuable as that program has proven, it is my conviction that some of those resources should be refocused in the current climate. Also on the Assembly’s agenda will be bills related to Certificates of Public Need (COPN) for hospitals and medical centers, and regulation of Airbnb and perhaps other so-called disruptive technologies. One local bill of import would allow Powhatan to assess a transient occupancy tax for motels, etc., at a rate not to exceed five percent and provided that all revenues over two percent of receipts be designated solely to promote tourism. The Powhatan County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to ask for this legislation. All tax-related bills are heard in the House Finance Committee, of which I am chairman. So I can readily assure voters — and all citizens — that no major tax or fee increases are likely to emerge from Assembly this year. Del. Lee Ware represents the 65th House District, including all of Powhatan County. P.O. Box 10 Powhatan, Va. 23139 Phone: 804-598-4305 Toll Free: 877-888-0449 Fax: 804-598-7757

The Powhatan Today is on the move again. Jim Callear of Powhatan and son Thomas took the newspaper to Bedford, where the national D-Day memorial is located. On Saturday, Dec. 10, the memorial held its annual illumination event, remembering the fallen U.S. servicemen who gave all on June 6, 1944. Jim and Thomas Callear portrayed Gen. Omar Bradley and his aide, Maj. Chet Hanson, spending four hours on a cold night telling visitors about D-Day and the sacrifices Bedford men made storming the Normandy beaches of France 72 years ago. Jim Callear said he recommends a visit to the D-Day memorial, which he called “one of the national best memorials honoring World War II veterans who gave all in Operation Overlord.”

Ring Dog Rescue proved its worth in 2016 In looking back on 2016, the Ring Dog Rescue organization faced many challenges, but also celebrated what members, volunteers and fosters call many “hooray” moments. The past year saw Ring Dog Rescue adding new volunteers and fosters, as well as forming new relationships with members of the community. Dogs living outside in peril were provided life-changing resources. The year 2016 ended with Ring Dog Rescue transferring 114 dogs (and puppies). The dogs were received from various locations, including the Powhatan Animal Shelter. Thanks were extended to all the shel-

ters that work so hard and make strides in improving the lives of the animals in the community. Of the 114 dogs brought into the program, 98 of them have been adopted. Powhatan’s Austin Washburn puts up a three-point shot during the Indians 69-55 win over Fluvanna on Jan. 5. Washburn had six of the Indians 13 three-point shots against the Flucos.

Powhatan’s range key in win over Flucos By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

I

t was early in the game against Fluvanna on Jan. 5 and the Powhatan Indians were still feeling out their opponent. But, thanks to a hot hand from Deven van Natter and developing a trend that would last the entire game, the Indians wouldn’t be anywhere close to the Flucos the rest of the game. Van Natter hit back-to-back three-pointers, two of 12 that the Indians drained in the contest, in a 69-55 win over Fluvanna. “I thought we played well,” coach Steve Washburn

said. “I’m always going to say that there’s areas where we can improve on. But, every time we’re tested when teams make runs on us, I’m always glad with how we’re going to respond. I thought we did a lot of good things.” Van Natter’s personal eight point run came in the early stages of the first quarter and shot the Indians out front 11-3 early on. He led the Indians with 22 points. Austin Washburn would join the three-pointer parade with two of his own later in the quarter. He had 20 points. Between the two shooters for the Indians, they accounted for 11 of the 13 three-point shots. Justin DeLeon and Aarion Morris had the other two.

“We do shoot the ball well and we have some really good shooters on this team,” coach Washburn said. “It was more than I anticipated or thought, but that’s something we can use as a weapon for ourselves, as long as we use it correctly and don’t fall in love with it.” Washburn said that he feels his shooters are becoming even more consistent as the season progresses. “I think guys are starting to get a better feel for where their shots are going to come from,” he said. “They’re also getting a better feel for each other and where they’re going to be. That’s creating better shots and shot selection.” see INDIANS page 2B

Knights fall short against Faith Christian 61-52 By Ellis Hopson Contributing Writer

Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s Chris Gupton puts a layup into the basket against Faith Christian. Gupton led the Knights with 14 points.

In his first year coaching at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot, Chris Hamner is striving to implement his style and philosophy early in the season. Often the loudest voice in the gym during his first few home games, Hamner is in constant communication with his team, whether it be calling out plays from the bench or preaching the importance of winning the 50-50 battles. While early results have not reflected it, the first-year head coach sees progress from the Knights, and the team is looking ahead to the opportunity the mid-season schedule presents. Blessed Sacrament Huguenot played its second game of the week against Faith Christian on Jan. 5. It was a tough

and physical contest throughout, but the Lions pulled away late for a 61-52 win. The Knights jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead early in the first quarter, including a savvy layup from junior forward Chris Gupton from an inbound play. Gupton led the team with 14 points and seven rebounds. Faith Christian started to pull away in the second quarter, where they outscored Blessed Sacrament Huguenot 22-13 and took a 12-point lead into halftime. Blessed Sacrament Huguenot struggled against the defensive pressure from the Lions, a facet of the game that Hamner emphasized. “We’re taking way too many chances when we don’t need to,” he said. “We need to hit the open guy, especially when teams see KNIGHTS page 2B

Snow cuts swim meet short for Powhatan By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

I

t was a circumstance that most, if not all, of the participants at the College School Aquatic Center on Jan. 6 hadn’t experienced before during a swim meet. Their swim meet was being cancelled after it had already begun, sending up a reaction from the swimmers and spectators alike that echoed incredibly loudly throughout the building. In the middle of the eighth event, just as some Powhatan swimmers were about to get on the blocks for the 50 freestyle, the meet was called due to the snowstorm beginning to hit the area. The meet featured Clover Hill, Thomas Dale, Matoaca and L.C. Bird along with the Indians, although the Indians were only facing off against the Skyhawks in the standings. Despite the meet being cut short, the Indians did have swimmers compete in events that did become official and had some strong times. Lindsey Fanz continued her strong start to the swim season, winning the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:01.46, besting Olivia Ooi of Clover Hill in the overall standings by over seven seconds. Powhatan’s boys 200 yard medley relay team was ninth in the overall standings with a 2:20.11. The team consisted of Dylan Ratliff, Jake Jeter, Dylan Quinones and Adam Kirkman. The girls 200 medley relay team was fifth with Fanz, Emily Matthews, Kathleen Malkerson and Joanna Thompson finishing with a 2:13.60. A second Indians 200 medley relay team was eighth. While in other games this season, the three-point shots have served the Indians in stopping the momentum of their opponent, it served a different purpose against the Flucos. Throughout the game, as the threes fell, they served as a way of extending their lead and continuing to be aggressive on the floor and not getting complacent with their advantage. The holes opened up for these chances that the Indians took advantage of thanks to the zone defense that Fluvanna was running. “We don’t see zones very often,” Washburn said. “Most teams will press us and play man. But, once we made

Gerow, Leah Cifers and Alyssa Franco swam a 2:21.81, just .61 seconds behind seventh place L.C. Bird. In the 200 yard freestyle, Campbell led the Indians contingent with a 2:35.71. Kayleigh George was 12th with a 2:50.17 and Maura Campbell was 16th with a 3:10.19. The 200 yard IM for Powhatan was led by Clare Gerow’s 2:56.82, good for 10th overall. Molly Gerow was 14th with a 3:16.19. In the 50 freestyle, Quinones was ninth for the Indians with a 27.01. Kirkman was 17th for Powhatan with a 30.12 and Ratliff was 18th with a 35.51. Coach Shannon Malkerson wrote in an email that a plan is in the works to continue the meet on Jan. 24. “We are fortunate to have four more meets before the conference meet,” she wrote. “So, although it is disappointing that we did not complete this meet, we have plenty of competitions left.” The Indians will swim their next three meets at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland. The first of those meets is against Atlee on Jan. 18, followed by a meet against Hanover on Jan. 21 and finally against Colonial Heights on Jan. 26. Then comes the conference meet on Feb. 3. “The snow is hurting us because we will lose practice time this week,” Malkerson wrote. “For the upcoming meets, we look strong and I am hoping to get some more swimmers qualified for the regional meet in February.” PHOTOSBY BILLY FELLIN Billy Fellin can be reached at wfell- Top: Molly Gerow swims for Powhatan during the 200 individual medley. in@powhatantoday.com or on Twitter Gerow finished 14th with a 3:16.19. some adjustments, we responded very well.” Fluvanna made a 7-0 run that spanned the end of the third quarter into the fourth, but was answered immediately by a 6-0 run from Powhatan. The Flucos also tried putting a hard press on the Indians, which worked and produced four quick points. However, Powhatan was able to adjust to the new defense and get into their half-court and run their style of play. The Indians were also effective at the foul line, going 18-for-26 from the line. Powhatan hosted Charlottesville on Tuesday, weather pending, and will travel to Orange on Jan. 12 for another Jefferson District matchup. are going to full-court press you. You can’t dribble through two and three defenders, it’s not going to work. That’s what I’m trying to teach these guys. We don’t have to make the great play, just make the simple play.” The Knights improved in the second, stepping up on defense and holding the Lions to just seven points during the third quarter. BSH used a 16-7 run across the third and fourth quarters to draw within three points, 42-39, with 6:25 remaining in the contest. The Knights were never able to retake the lead, however, and Faith Christian was able to hit clutch shots and salt the game away at the free throw line. Despite a rough start to his tenure,

Hamner sees signs of improvement from BSH: “I know it seems weird coming from a coach of a team that’s 0-7, but we’re improving every game. I’m hoping we have a stretch of winnable games coming up here, because we are getting better every single game. We’re struggling right now to put one together, to play a 32-minute game. We’re the type of team that has to grind you out for 32 minutes, and I think once this team figures that out, we’re going to be able to win some games.” Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s faced Amelia Academy on Jan. 4. The Patriots, who finished 29-8 and one win short of a state title a season ago, showed they were a clear mismatch for BSH in a 75-43 win. Blessed Sacrament will be back in action on Jan. 10, when they host Brunswick Academy.
