CHARLES WALKER Charles Douglas “Doug” Walker, 74, passed away peaceably at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Richmond at 3:45 p.m. on October 4, 2016. Doug had battled bravely for over two years with acute circulation and stomach ailments. Born December 18, 1941 in Richmond, he was the son of John E. “Whitey” Walker and Jean C. McDonald. He is survived by his sister, Cheryl Graham; brother, Mason WALKER Knabe; daughter-in-law, Michelle Walker; and beloved grandson, Wyatt Walker. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Charles M. Knabe; a brother, Ervin; and a sister, Gaye Crowl. Doug spent most of his life in the Richmond and Powhatan areas. Early in his life Doug was diagnosed with osteomyelitis, spending 18 days in the hospital, successfully recovering from this generally deadly disease. His parents always described this as a miracle, as Doug also regained his ability to walk. In his high school days in Powhatan, Doug was well known for his football skills and ability to play the game as an undersized lineman and linebacker. He was honored by the Virginia Sports Writers and Sportscasters Association in 1959 as an Honorable Mention All-State player, in his senior year. In the spring and summer of 1960, he was invited to play in many all-star games, prior to entering the Virginia Military Institute in the fall of 1960. At VMI, Doug played varsity football for four years while wrestling his 4th Class (freshman) year as well. His success at VMI was noted by many individuals both in the Southern Conference and elsewhere. It was said that he was the smallest offensive lineman to play for any NCAA team in the country during his varsity career. Many of VMI’s opponents respected him for his aggressiveness, abilities and desire to always win. New York Giants great Sam Huff said that if Doug weighed 25 pounds more he could play for any team in the NFL. One could not ask for a better compliment. After his days at VMI, Doug returned to the Richmond area where he was involved in many entrepreneurial endeavors. He also
continued his football career, playing with the Richmond Rebels, a semi-pro team based there. In his later years, Doug was a Charter Member of the New Market Legacy Award Committee at VMI, which established the criteria that resulted in the first Peergenerated award awarded at VMI. Established by Doug’s class (1964), it is awarded annually to a 1st Classman (senior) by secret ballot of the graduating class. The selected cadet is the member of the class that best emulates the qualities and characteristics of the New Market Cadets who fought there in May of 1864. Doug was an experienced horseman, avid bow and rifle hunter who enjoyed his trips to South Carolina and Georgia. His family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of St. Mary’s Hospital and David Ayers and Charles “Butch” Nunnally, his classmates, for their care and compassion shown over the past year. In addition to family members, Doug also leaves behind a large VMI family, including the Class of 1964, and many others who were associated with the Institute. He also leaves behind many brother and sister friends at Moose Lodge #1714 in Richmond. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Keydet Club, “64” Athletic Scholarship Fund: VMI Keydet Club, P.O. Box 932, Lexington, VA 24450-9906 or to Moose Charities c/o Moose Lodge #1714, 1207 Hilliard Road, Richmond, VA 23228. Details of a memorial service for Doug will be announced at a later date.
