This year, the participation was so good and the competition was so close that Olive Garden agreed to cater lunch for the top two fundraising homerooms at the middle school, Stephens said. Jennifer DeGroat’s homeroom brought in the most change with $681.70 while Lindsay Salyer’s homeroom was a close second with $655.95. The students had their lunch on Tuesday, May 17 and had a great time, she added. Rebecca Stevens, 11, and Olivia Kapasakis, 11, both fifth-graders in DeGroat’s homeroom, joined forces to sell muffins, lemonade, books and stuffed animals in front of Flat Rock Village to help raise money. The girls wanted to help their class win and were thrilled when they did. “It was good. You feel really excited. Everybody was screaming,” Rebecca said. Underlying that excitement was a feeling of knowing they had accomplished something good together. Both girls’ mothers talked to them about leukemia, and they were saddened by how it affects people. They were also amazed they help their class raise so much money to go toward cancer research and other projects. “I was proud,” Olivia said. Fifth-grader Sam Shevrin was in Amy Woodell’s homeroom, which raised the third highest in the school with $556.26. Sam had been saving up coins for a few

years – change from when he bought things or coins he found on the ground. One day he brought in two piggy banks worth of coins; the next day he had large Ziploc bags filled with even more. All told, he brought in about $167 worth for the cause.
“I started to think, if I had leukemia and my mom was worried, I wouldn’t want her worried,” Hunter said. “I decided to bring in a lot of money because I wouldn’t want other parents to feel like that.” Hunter said that when he told his

Lindsay Salyer’s homeroom at Pocahontas Middle School brought in the second highest amount for Pennies for Pasta.
“It was just going to sit under my bed, so I felt this was the time to give it,” Sam said. There was an even more important reason behind the move, though. Sam said he lost his uncle to cancer and it was really sad. He just wants to find a cure. “It wasn’t really about the winning. It was just very sad,” he said. Hunter Stoddard, a sixth-grader in Salyer’s homeroom, said he kept thinking about his aunt, who had breast cancer.
mom he was going to donate the $60 he earned doing several weeks of chores, she said she was proud of him and matched his donation. A few days later his dad gave him $40 to bring in and his mom doubled the amount again. “I was happy that a lot of people brought in a lot of money. I wouldn’t want to be a parent and your child have leukemia or cancer,” Hunter said. When Asher Timberlake, a sixthgrade in Mike Morin’s homeroom, saw his class hadn’t raised much money yet

for the fundraiser, he decided to donate the $100 he received for his birthday in March. The move was not out of character. For the last few years, he said that instead of toys and money for his birthday, he asked for food for a local food pantry. “I just feel bad for the people who have cancer. I know it’s not a good feeling,” he said. Asher said he was really motivated when he heard a teacher’s father had suffered from cancer. “I know it’s raising money for people who have cancer and getting rid of it,” he said. The teachers at the middle school did a good job of conveying the importance of the fundraiser, especially since the impact has been felt in Powhatan County, Stephens said. Rebecca Maupin was a student who died from acute myeloid leukemia in 2014 after battling it since 2010. The county also lost a sweet friend and teacher when Amy Casteel died in 2010 from a form of leukemia, Stephens said. “It is not just something you see on TV or in movies. Everybody has been affected by this awful disease of cancer,” she said. Stephens added that for every child who brought in large amounts of money, there were dozens more who helped by bringing in their little bags of change, all of them “glad they were helping the cause.”
