he small town America feel was alive and well in Powhatan when several thousand people filled the Village area to celebrate Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 1. On Old Buckingham Road just across from the Powhatan County Courthouse, Joyce Marshall watched the parade go by with her three children – Lily, 9, Isabella, 5, and Coleman, 20 months – continuing a tradition started by her parents. “Ever since I was little it was special to go to the parade,” said Marshall of Powhatan. “It was a nice tradition before the end of summer.” see LIONS page 3A

s darkness fell on Powhatan County over Labor Day weekend, creatures that go bump in the night were wreaking havoc – at least until the director yelled “Cut!” Vampires – good and bad – came to the area on Thursday, Aug. 28, and stayed for several days when “Vam-
pires in Virginia” began shooting on location in the county. Director Kahil Dotay said he was pleased with how the combination of day and night shoots went, with good locations, crew and cast working in his favor. “It has been really great as far as people being positive and willing to help,” Dotay, of Midlothian, said. Although the horror flick has already been shooting in different loca-
tions in and around Richmond since early July, the shoot on Aug. 28 was the first time on location in Powhatan County, he said. Filming started at Chadwick and Son Orchids Inc., with the film crew using Arthur Chadwick’s log cabin home and his orchid greenhouses off Dorset Road in scenes for the movie. Miller of Powhatan has a hidden past – being one of the stars of the 1967 Japanese film “King Kong Escapes.” Now a cult classic for monster movie fans, the film features Miller as Lt. Susan Watson, the petite blond (she dyed it for the film) trying to help save the world while not getting

King William man is being held by the Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office on charges of malicious wounding with a cutting instrument of a Powhatan man. At about 11:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 1, Powhatan’s dispatch center received a call from a family member of Gordon Atkeison, 32, of King William requesting that law enforcement check on his welfare at multiple addresses in Powhatan County, according to Anne Reynolds, crime analyst. ATKEISON While responding to these addresses, a second call was received, advising that an assault had occurred in the 1800 block of Manakintown Ferry Road, she said. When deputies arrived on the scene, they found a victim with multiple lacerations, Reynolds said. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening wounds and later released. Atkeison, a suspect in the crime, had fled the scene prior to deputies’ arrival. A search was organized involving Powhatan deputies, canine units and the Virginia State Police. Atkeison was apprehended shortly thereafter, about a mile from the crime scene. Atkeison was charged with malicious wounding and was denied bond at his arraignment and bond hearing on Wednesday, Sept. 3.

I wasn’t one to pull out my pictures and reminisce,” said Miller, a partner in Country Living Homes in Powhatan. That all changed when Miller got a call out of the blue from writer Brett Homenick in Japan. He had been looking for her for years and wanted to do an article about her experiences on the film. While her mom liked the Southside Shriners Mini vehicle assortment, Lily Marshall was more interested in the military vehicles. “It is cool to learn about the Army and America’s past. I liked the tan Humvee,” she said. People lined the parade route on Old Buckingham Road to see the festive procession of new and antique cars, fire trucks, bands, dancers and other groups organized by the Powhatan Lions Club. On and around the Courthouse Green, about 40 businesses, churches, artisans, nonprofit organizations, public officials, and food vendors offered goods for sale, free snacks and water, and information to passers-by. Jennie Camp, a Lions Club member, said the Labor Day festivities are a huge
undertaking for the Lions Club – all members are required to participate – but worth it when they see how much fun everyone has. Organizers were thrilled with this year’s turnout, she said. The weather was a little warm but otherwise perfect to draw families out for the day. The parade, organized by Allen Minter – “to us he is Mr. Lion” – was made up of 61 entries that represented the wide variety of interests that make up the county, Camp said. It was especially entertaining to see all the groups that cater to youth showcasing their talents. “It is a community feel. When you see your kids or grandkids, it is so cool,” she said. The Labor Day festivities are a “real piece of Americana,” said Roy Harrison, a Lions Club member who worked along the parade route. Events like this make “people feel pride in their community.” Powhatan County Undersheriff Chris DeHart said he loves that community feel

he descendants of an African American Powhatan couple gathered from Friday, July 25, to Sunday, July 27, in Powhatan for a reunion and to commemorate a family torn apart by tragedy. On Friday, Feb. 28, 1897, Paulus Carrington (1876-1916), son of Alfred and Ann Elizabeth
(1879-1967), daughter of Charles and Martha (Wood) Hazel of Mohemenco, Powhatan, were married. Elder Robert Turner performed the ceremony at his residence. Paulus traced his ancestry to two slaves (Ned and Betty) on the Codington Carrington’s plantation in Cumberland. Mary traced her maternal ancestry to the Bamileke, Tikar and Hausa (Nigerian) peoples of Cameroon,
His children attended St. Emma’s Parochial School. The family had membership in Greenbrier Baptist Church. On Aug. 23, 1916, Paulus at age 40 was struck by lightning and killed. He left 10 children and a wife. He was buried in Greenbrier Baptist Church Cemetery off of Mohemenco Road (Cosby Road). Mary was unable to provide for her 10 children. The family was split.

One daughter lived with Bettie (Brown) and the Rev. William Simms (1865-1937). Simms was a farmer, befriender to exoffenders, and a community activist. In a letter to the Virginia State Board of Education (dated Feb. 17, 1937), he and others complained about Powhatan School Board’s refusal to build a modern high school with light, heat and plumbing for Negro children on land that Negroes had donated and contributed $3,000 to help finance the building.

She started working at Country Living Homes in 2001 and moved to the county in 2003.

The movie has a bigger following in the United States than in Japan and is mostly popular with fans of the Godzilla series because the team who made “King Kong Escapes” also made the original Godzilla movies at Toho Studios, said Homenick, who lives in Tokyo and answered questions via email. Unbeknownst to Miller, she was at the center of a great mystery among fans of the film who wanted to know more about her for several decades, Homenick said. Several writers had been searching for Miller since at least the early 1990s with no luck, he added. “I started looking for her around 2005. At one point, I found contact information for a person I felt confident was Linda’s brother, so you could imagine how I felt when Linda later told me she was an only child,” Homenick said.
A life a world away Miller had just finished high school when she and her mother, Marta Miller, moved to Tokyo to join her father, Merle Duane Miller, who was in the U.S. Air Force. She originally planned to become a Spanish interpreter for the United Nations when she knew her father had put in a request for duty in Spain. In Japan, the 17-yearold Miller found herself thrust in the limelight, starting work almost immediately doing modeling jobs and staying constantly busy. “I was treated very well. I was always treated like I was special,” she said. The beginning of Miller’s acting career came when she was spotted on a magazine cover and cast in the role of Lt. Susan Watson, she said. “I couldn’t believe it because I had never acted in my life. I knew I wasn’t going to be that good. It just seemed surreal,” Miller said. During the 1960s, several Americans living in Japan at the time were chosen to appear in various movies, sometimes to give the film an international flavor and other times to appear as one of the lead actors, Homenick

said. “There was practically no information available about the Americans who starred in these movies, some of which were American-Japanese coproductions with fairly big budgets at the time,” he said. “The Americans would make the movie and quietly return to civilian life, so to speak.” It was a scary proposition for Miller at first because she had no acting experience and doubted her skills. The tension gradually lessened as the other actors and crew supported and encouraged her, she said. It also helped that her mother was with the young girl the entire time. Her mom now lives with her in Powhatan. Miller remembers the lead male American actor, Rhodes Reason, giving her advice to help her performance. In scenes where she was supposed to be in King Kong’s hand, she was actually on a giant hand with a blue screen behind her. “He gave me tips on how to visualize things to be more believable,” she said. While filming on location on Oshima Island, Miller said the entire cast and crew would eat together Japanese style and it was always fun. The only thing she actually didn’t like about
the experience was that, in the finished product, the entire film was dubbed to make a Japanese and English version using all different voices, she said. “It was awful. The only place my voice is in the movie is whenever there is a scream,” she said. Miller filmed one other movie in Japan, “The Green Slime,” in 1968, before her family returned to the United States. She briefly pursued an acting career in Los Angeles, but had a difficult transition to life back stateside. On top of dealing with her parents’ divorce and a broken love affair with well-known Japanese actor Yosuke Natsuki, Miller said she didn’t adjust well to the Los Angeles movie scene. She landed a guest role on “My Three Sons” under the name Leslie Michaels, which she was assigned because another woman named Linda Miller already had a card with the Screen Actors Guild. She didn’t like the name or the “hippie movement” that had exploded while she was abroad. It was very different from the structure she was used to in Japan. “I got out of acting because I wasn’t emotionally ready for the busi-

When Miller made “King Kong Escapes,” she thought of it as another monster movie without much weight, which explains a great deal of her surprise when she found out people had been looking for her. With the American “Godzilla” movie hitting theaters and many of the original Japanese movies coming out on DVD and Blu-ray, more people are becoming aware of the genre and its history, Homenick said. “Linda Miller is a part of that history.” For years, Homenick had no luck in finding Miller. Then, in August 2013, he had a meeting with Natsuki, Miller’s former love interest, and the actor mentioned Miller. “Suffice it to say, my jaw hit the floor. He was able to give me some information that led me to find Linda,” Homenick said. When Homenick dropped Natsuki’s name during his introduction, the door was wide open for him, Miller said with a laugh. Even though she hadn’t spoken to the actor since they broke up, she said he always held a special place in her heart. “You know how you have one person in your life who is ‘The Guy’? He is ‘The Guy,’ ” she said with a smile. Homenick said he was surprised by how friendly Miller was during the interview process and how much of her experiences during the film she could remember - even 45 years later. “I’ve interviewed others who have very little to say about the movies they made in the last 10 years, so I was ecstatic that Linda remembered so many details from a movie as old as ‘King Kong Escapes.’ It was one of the smoothest interview ex-

No child should be going hungry By Laura McFarland News Editor
H
ave you ever known what it’s like to be hungry? Not the “I haven’t eat since this morning and I’m starved” gripe. I am talking about a stomach so empty that it would look on a small can of ravioli or tuna as a feast. I will admit I haven’t known that kind of lack. Even in hard times, my parents were able to keep my sisters and me clothed, fed and warm. I am very thankful for that. Unfortunately, that is not true for everyone, including families in Powhatan County. There is no judgment intended in that statement. None of us can know the entire story in another family’s situation and how they got to where they are. During the week, the Powhatan Public Schools help alleviate some of the lack in those students’ lives with their free and reduced lunch program. What about when the children are not in school? To some of us, the recent three-day weekend for Labor Day was a time to feast and relax. But, to some children, it might have meant three days instead of two that they didn’t know where their next meal was coming from.
In August, I was introduced to Avis Gates, the president of Backpacks of Love Inc. The goal of the local nonprofit group is to make sure children in those situations don’t go hungry on the weekends by sending them home with bags of food, Gates told me. In some cases, the food is the only meal they will have the entire weekend. Gates and I met when I also was being introduced to Megan Hughes, a Powhatan Girl Scout working on her Gold Award project. Megan donated $785 worth of food to the program using money she had raised by organizing a 5K in May. She definitely deserves a round of applause. But then, so do the organizers of Backpacks of Love and regular donors, who act as a kind of guardian angel for children in need in Powhatan County, and more recently Cumberland County, without them even knowing about it. I feel this is a good description of them because, with this program, there is no gratification other than knowing that what you are doing is helping. Donors don’t get the joy of watching a child handed a bag of food or to see their excitement as they dig into it. They never even see which children take bags home, because the goal is to offer help without embarrassment. “We would hate to cause people not to do it be-

cause it wasn’t done discreetly,” Gates said. The program serves students in Powhatan County of varying ages, so organizers make sure all the food sent home with them is “kid friendly.” That means it is individually packaged, easy to open, and no preparation, refrigeration, or cooking are required. As good as fresh produce and meat would be for them, it has to be food that has more of a shelf life and is easy for the children to transport, Gates said. By the end of the 2013-2014 school year, the program was serving 175 students in Powhatan County and 25 students in Cumberland County, she said. Who knows how many will be helped this year. Organizers want to do more, but they have to see how this goes and make sure it is workable throughout the school year, she said. Part of that means making sure they can serve the children they have already committed to feeding. It is an admirable goal and one that anyone who has a child in their life they would hate to see suffer could probably get behind if they stopped a minute to really consider it. The clock is ticking.

hile many of my friends are climbing into golf carts for a leisurely ride to their favorite eatery on some windswept southern seashore, I’m shopping for back to school supplies. Now, I’m not complaining. Let’s face it, I’m just one in a legion of parents who are preparing for the upcoming school year, and, like many of them, I’m asking myself, where did the summer go? Between swimming lessons, Minecraft School and summer camp, I suppose it’s not hard to figure out where what was once a leisurely respite from a hectic school year went. I recall those last few days of summer as a kid, and, even today, I’m somewhat sad to see the season go. On the other hand, I recognize it’s time for my children to return to a structured environment with plenty of social stimulation. Needless to say, they are not as enthusiastic regarding a return to routine that includes rides on the big yellow bird … and math. This year’s preparation seems a bit different as one of my daughters is embarking on her middle school career. The change in campus is evoking an out of her comfort zone anxiety that other parents tell me is normal. Coupled with her first trip to the orthodontist, it’s quite a period of transition for Sophie. Her anxiety can only be consoled by the thought of her receiving a brand new computer on her first day of school. She has studied her schedule, picked out an outfit for the first day and studied the quickest route to her homeroom. I must admit it is encouraging to see her enthusiasm for sixth grade. My twins are preparing for their final year in elementary school, so their preparation is something they are used to. We’ve picked up the normal notebooks, crayons and pencils required for their educational rigor, but they don’t seem as excited about the first day of school. They are, more or less, looking at the final days of summer as a glass half empty, and they keep asking me how many days until school starts. As the number diminishes, the look on their faces becomes more dismayed. They’ve finally realized that no amount of resistance can postpone the inevitable first day of school, and they don’t appreciate my good-natured taunting regarding the waning days of summer. “Only one more week of swimming and then it’s back to peanut butter sandwiches and juice boxes,” I joked with them several days ago. Their response was predictable. “Dad, we are not amused.” I understand the not amused part. I’m just glad they are enrolled.

skunks, fox, weasels and many others. But dogs, by law, must be leashed or confined, as they can be and have been the biggest threat of all to our smaller farm and livestock animals. This should not have happened but will continue to happen if we don’t take a stand and each do our part to see that dogs are not allowed to roam free. Animal Control was not able to come out to my area that day, and none of my neighbors have seen these particular dogs before. On Monday, Aug. 25, two dogs viciously attacked our chickens in broad daylight, killing two and severely injuring another before we stopped them. They kept returning on our property several times. For four and a half years, these chickens – our pets – have free ranged on our 5-acre lot without incident. After leaving our property, these same dogs went next door and attacked our neighbor’s chicken coops. Luckily they were unable to get inside. In an effort to preserve their heritage and history, a commemorative quilt was commissioned to be produced by Mildred Washington, quilter. The family hopes to locate a museum that will display the quilt permanently, not include it in the stored inventory of the repository. The goals of the project are to educate the public and to preserve the African American History and Heritage of Mohemenco. The quilt depicts the major events in the lives of the Carrington Family of Mohemenco. The quilt includes a symbolic Native American teepee;
Mary Carrington and her 10 children; the Mohemenco (Monacan Village) and Drake House Historical Marker that covers the eras of slavery, reconstruction, segregation and integration; St. Emma’s Parochial School’s 1920 program, (25th annual commencement), including the names of two Carrington sisters; the marriage certificate of Paulus and Mary; death certificates of Charles Isham Hazel (1915) and Paulus Carrington (1916), and the 1967 obituary for Mary (Hazel) Carrington Farrar Black. A Paulus and Mary Carrington Scholarship is being established in honor of the skilled laborers and farmers of Mohemeco Hamlet. The goal of the scholarship is to encourage Carrington descendants to pursue industrial and agricultural careers.

It’s hard to imagine a better way for Jim Woodson to begin his third decade as head coach of the Powhatan High School football program. Facing a Midlothian High School Trojans team that never quite seemed in sync, the Indians jumped out to a 21-0 first quarter lead and held on to capture a breezy 42-0 victory despite a torrent of cramps and penalties. “This was a great way to start the season,” said Woodson. “We have some areas we need to work on, but overall we played very well.” This was the sixth consecutive year in which the two schools, separated by a nine-mile stretch of Route 60, have met in the regular season.With last Friday’s convincing victory, Powhatan now holds a 5-1 advantage in those contests. The only Indians loss in the series is a 29-7 drubbing in the 2012 season opener. That Midlothian team featured playmaking quarterback Justin Joyce and an offense that had numerous weapons. This year’s squad relied upon running back
Derick Saunders to shoulder much of the offensive load.The results were minimal. The Trojans finished with only 145 total yards, a stat that is as much a testament to Powhatan’s stout defensive play as it is an glaring example of just how much the Trojans have regressed since that 2012 campaign. The orange and black pounced on the homestanding Trojans in from the opening whistle., scoring three times in the first 11 minutes. Although Powhatan may have let its opponent hang around a little too long in the middle of the game — thanks to a number of untimely penalties (seven for 74 yards) and turnovers (one interception, one fumble) — there was never any doubt the Indians had the contest well-in-hand. Logan Allen (or “Tank” as team photographer Anjie Henley has so fittingly named him) got the party started early in the first quarter. It took the Powhatan offense only two minutes and 21 seconds to drive 48-yards for the first score of the game. And was it ever a pretty one. As it happened, Allen took a handoff off the left side, bulldozed over a stocky outside linebacker, shimmied through a tackle, and went airborne, kissing the football just inside the front pylon. It was a remarkably athletic play — one of many on the night by the highly-touted senior — and it was equaled, perhaps even oneupped, by the Powhatan defense on the Trojans’ first possession.. tipped pass and weaved his way 42 yards through potential tacklers to paydirt. With that score, worries about a possible repeat of that fateful 2012 loss began to drift away on the mild summer breeze. Even with the two score advantage, the Indians refused to hold anything back. On their second offensive possession, they drove 56 yards and went up 21-0 when Allen broke two more tackles and breeched the goal line for his second touchdown.
Allen finished the night with 175 yards on 13 carries. “Logan ran very well,” said Woodson. “Once he gets going he’s hard to stop. He had some issues with cramping, but that’s because he’s going both ways. We’re going to try to get him as much rest as possible this year while still getting him a good amount of touches.” Thankfully for the Indians, L.J. Jackson, a 5’5” jitterbug of a runner who would likely be a starter on just about any other team in the district and perhaps the region, of-
fers a solid alternative at running back. Jackson made his presence known in the first game of his senior season, slicing through the defense a la Barry Sanders for 81 yards and a short touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. The Indians averaged a whopping 9.2 yards per carry and finished with 322 yards rushing. The Atlantic Shores Christian Seahawks rolled into town to face the Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Knights on a humid Friday evening in Powhatan. The Knights looked to rebound from a loss at the hands of Bishop Sullivan while the Seahawks were fresh off of a victory at Isle of Wight. Beginning in the opening quarter, the Knights struggled to find their footing defensively. After an early Knights’ score, the Seahawks answered by scoring on two of their three first quarter possessions. Heading into the second quarter, the score stood at 13-7 Seahawks. The Knights began the second quarter on offense,
but, after a few stuffed rushing attempts and a nearly completed pass, were forced to punt. Sean Stanley boomed a 41yard punt on fourth down, but it was returned 70 yards by Jordan Cannady for a Seahawks score. An ensuing squib kick by the Seahawks was returned to the 45-yard line by Tanner Dobrucky, giving the Knights great field position to start their next drive. However, a fumbled handoff on the next play left the Seahawks with possession at the Knights’ 25-yard line. The resulting play was a touchdown pass from Aaron Ferguson to Ryan Chamberlain to put the Knights down 26-7 with 10 minutes left in the second quarter. Due to an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, the Seahawks were forced to kick off from the 25-yard line, giving the Knights an outstanding field position at their 48-yard line. From here, it took only three plays for CJ Filipkowski to
throw a perfect strike to Rory O’Donnell for a 52-yard touchdown. A perfectly kicked extra point from Ryan Cary left the score at 26-14. The Seahawks answered with a 50-yard rushing touchdown from Brehon Britt on the fourth play of the ensuing drive to make the score 3314. With eight minutes left in the second quarter, the Knights needed to answer to stay in the game. They did just that, compiling a seven-play, 65yard drive highlighted by a 38-yard run and a 16-yard touchdown run by Tanner Dobrucky. The result was a score of 33-20 with nearly seven minutes left in the second quarter. From here, the Seahawks and the Knights both went three-and-out on consecutive possessions. A shanked punt gave the Seahawks the ball back at the Knights’ 34 yard line, where they scored on the fourth play of the following

way toward realizing his athletic dream: playing football for the University of Tennessee. Indians struggle in RVC tourney Powhatan goes 2-12 in annual High School Volleyball Showcase By Mike Schoeffel Sports Writer
Walking into the Richmond Volleyball Club during the annual High School Volleyball Showcase can be a bit of a sensory overload. The facility features 12 full-sized volleyball courts, all of which are simultaneously utilized during the two-day tournament that has kicked off the season for the better part of the last two decades. The official RVC website proclaims itself “one of the largest volleyballdedicated facilities in the world,” and, during the weekend of the HSVS, every last inch of space is utilized. Each season, 32 teams — 16 boys teams and 16 girls teams — from all corners of the state descend on this volleyball Mecca. The screeching of whistles and thumping of volleyballs is so ubiquitous that one wonders how the players are able to stay focused on the task at hand. And that’s not even taking the crowd — which is as tightly packed as a New York City subway at 8 a.m. on a Monday — into consideration, Powhatan came into this season opening tournament with two scrimmages under their belt and first-year head coach Kayla Trippeer leading the charge. The Indians played 14 sets against five teams within less than 32 hours. Their first match came against Lee-Davis at 9 a.m. Friday. Their final match
came 31 1/2 hours later against James River (Midlothian). During that time frame, the girls struggled to find a sense of consistency, dropping all but two of their 14 sets. The Indians were swept, 3-0, by both Lee-Davis and Westfield on Friday. They put on a much better showing on the second day. In their first Saturday match, they stole the third and final set from First Colonial. They followed their first set victory of the season with another one against James River (Buchanan), a rival of Trippeer’s alma mater, Craig County. Powhatan wrapped up the tournament with a 2-0 loss against James River (Midlothian), a team the Indians would play again three days after the conclusion of the showcase. Notably absent from the HSVS was Kelli Nee, a team leader and one of the Indians most dynamic players. She was in full uniform throughout the duration of the tournament, but spent the weekend on the bench nursing a minor lower body injury, a black brace strapped tightly to her right leg. She would make her season debut (albeit in a limited capacity) when the Indians played at James River (Midlothian). She is expected to be back at full strength this week, according to Trippeer. Kelli is the second in a trio of Nees to come through the Powhatan varsity program. Her older sister Nicole graduated last summer after a solid career with the Indians. Her younger sister Abby is a starter on this year’s team. The Indians are back in action this week. They traveled to Midlothian on Monday, Sept. 8 and will host Tabb on Wednesday, Sept. 10. Tip-off for the junior varsity game is set for 6 p.m. The varsity game will be played immediately afterward.

Eight questions with...Ray Brown Former Indians stand-out chats with Powhatan Today By Mike Schoeffel Sports Writer
Ray Brown was a force to be reckoned with during his time in the Indians backfield. His hard-running ways helped the Indians advance to the state semifinals in 2011, where they fell to a Broad Run team with a future Division I running back on their roster. After graduating, Brown moved on to Aver-
ett University. During his sophomore season with the Cougars, Brown, who still wears his old high school number (8) ran for 301 yards and three touchdowns. This season, Brown’s role within the Cougars backfield will likely be expanded. Last week, as he prepared for his team’s season opener against Washington & Lee, he took the time to chat briefly with the Powhatan Today. What made you choose

My favorite part of college would have to be the breaks. We get winter break and summer break, those are the two I like the most. How did playing for a successful high school football program prepare you for the college game? Playing at Powhatan has prepared me well. I had the best teachers and coaches anybody could ask for during my time in Powhatan. The game speed didn’t really change and practice didn’t get any
harder. It’s just different. What has it been like playing with two of your former teammates, with a third one coming this fall? Now that I have Jake [Salisbury], Joe [Lewis] and Spencer [Dowdle] here with me it makes things much easier because we always know that we have each other to talk to and we always have each others’ backs. But still, there’s no place like home. The orange and black still runs strong. Has coach Cleive Adams given you any hint as to how much playing time you can expect to see this season?
I have no idea really about how much playing time I will be getting. What has been the most challenging part of adjusting to the college game? The hardest part for me would have to be not having the fans like we had in Powhatan. There is no pride like Indian pride. If you could score two free tickets to any sporting event in the world, what would it be? To see Lebron James play. What is your fondest memory from this past season? When we beat Gilford College.

Until recently, Livermon had his heart set playing soccer this fall But after some determined coaxing from Woodson, Livermon decided to return to the (American) football field. The sophomore’s presence paid dividends, as he converted all five extra points he attempted. A name that may not be as familiar to the Powhatan faithful is Reed Kietzman. Kietzman is a sophomore quarterback who re-
placed senior starters Cambrun Graham under center in the second quarter. Perhaps overcome with a bout of nerves accompanying his first varsity appearance, the 6’0�, 165pound signal caller tossed an interception on his first play from scrimmage. But he remained cool after the mishap and went on to score his first varsity touchdown on a five-yard run in the third quarter. “I thought [Reed] showed a lot of composure,� said Woodson. “He looks like he belongs out there. He knows what he’s good at and he doesn’t try to force too much. He’s most effec-
tive off the play action pass and attacking the flank.� The Indians’ final score of the game came on an acrobatic catch in the fourth quarter by Jeremy Arnold from Peyton Mawyer, the third Indians quarterback to see playing time on the night.Elijiah Goode led the Indians with seven tackles. The Indians have their home opener on Friday, Sept. 12, against a Hopewell team that rolled Grafton 30-7 in its season opener. It is Military Appreciation Night, which means all active members of the military with a valid ID will receive free entry to the game.

After giving up a 53yard kickoff and a 20yard pass down to the 5yard line, they showed up with two sacks and a goal line stand to regain possession with nine minutes left in the third quarter. With momentum on their side, the Knights still struggled on offense. A long punt after a three and out led to another return for a touchdown by Jordan Cannady to put the Knights down 53-20 with seven minutes left in the third. Although they were down on the scoreboard, the Knights refused to quit. Noah Dowdy returned the ensuing kickoff to the 40-yard line to set them up with great field position. A perfect
58-yard pass from C.J. Filipkowski to Rory O‘Donnell brought the Knights back into contention to close out the third quarter. The fourth quarter saw a continuous game clock and good amount of ball control from the Seahawks. In the last two minutes of game clock, however, they decided to pass for a touchdown despite their 53-28 lead. In an act of instant retribution, Tanner Dobrucky intercepted their final pass attempt and returned it for a touchdown to close the game out at 53-36 Seahawks.
This is a game that the Knights can surely build on. Although the final result was undesirable, they were facing an opponent from a larger division. Throughout the game, they showed great resolve and toughness, even when down a considerable margin.
