‘Tornado chaser’ visits high school Tim Samaras, star of Discover Channel’s Storm Chasers, has followed ‘violent’ storms for 20 years By Emily Darrell Staff Writer

Usually, when you hear someone use the word “violent,” it’s understood to be a bad thing. But when Tim Samaras uses the word “violent” before the word “tornado,” it’s as though he’s paying the storm a compliment. Samaras, one of the stars of Discovery Channel’s Storm Chasers, came to Powhatan High School earlier this month to give a talk on two of his favorite weather phenomenon: tornadoes and lightning. After seeing the Wizard of Oz at the age of six – and being more enthralled by the tornado than any other part of the film – Samaras became a devotee of all things meteorological, finding himself particularly drawn to weather in its most dramatic forms. As he shows the audience footage he and his crew shot at a tornado in Bowdle, South Dakota in 2010, Samaras declares: “This is a violent tornado – violent!” The storm does indeed look violent. Gasps could be heard around the auditorium as, on the

screen, a mass of gray clouds picks up a telephone pole and snaps it, the way you or I might a toothpick. Samaras has been chasing storms for more than 20 years and, not surprisingly, his preferred stalking grounds are far from Powhatan, in the middle swath of the U.S. known as “tornado alley.” Still, Samaras said: “There is no state [in the U.S.] that is safe from tornadoes, except for maybe Alaska.” He then corrected himself, recalling a time that he did in fact see a tornado – albeit a small one – in Alaska. Early in his presentation Samaras explained the factors that make tornado alley so prone to the storms. These factors include a strong jet stream that blows eastward from the West Coast and cold, dry air from the Rocky Mountain region that collides with warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico. In fact, Samaras said, the United States as a whole sees far, far more tornadoes than any other country, which makes the storms almost an almost uniquely American phenomenon. Each year Samaras and his crew put more than 40,000 miles on their vehicles, driving from South Dakota, to Alabama, to everywhere in between. Around 10 years ago Samaras developed a specially-designed

probe that is equipped with seven video cameras. He leaves this probe near where he thinks a tornado might touch down, allowing him to actually get video footage from inside a tornado. In fact, Samaras holds a Guinness World Record for being the only person ever to have accomplished this. Samaras hopes the footage he takes, and the measurements that he and his crew obtain from this footage, will help scientists better understand these deadly storms. Samaras believes that the more we can learn about tornadoes and the better we understand them, the better we can prepare for them, and, hopefully, save lives. Still, it’s clear that, for Samaras, chasing storms is also just plain fun. In one clip that Samaras shows, he and his crew are caught in a hail storm near Campo, Colo. After being hit in the head by a hailstone – and with blood streaming down the side of his face – Samaras grins at the camera, as though he is having the time of his life. “What originally drew me to chasing tornadoes,” Samaras said, “was the awe and beauty of Mother Nature herself.” Samaras’ talk was made possible by the JASON project, a nationwide program –of which Powhatan is part – that connects students with real scientists and researchers, and encourages them to consider careers in science, technology, and engineering.
