Bahrain and Sports Influencing the GCC and the World.

Sports can be a powerful tool to promote the all-round growth and development of the youth of a nation. In Bahrain, under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad, we are dedicated to provide all sorts of opportunities for our young people as far as sports is concerned. I strongly believe that an efficient physical education programme equips people with vital qualities, such as leadership, perseverance, social and moral character, self-esteem, commitment to teamwork, and problemsolving and organisational abilities. In today’s most challenging environment, such skills can only help individuals to succeed in life, and that brings prosperity to the nation. We are always on the lookout for ways of improving facilities and practices for physical education. One example of this is that I feel we should develop a more holistic physical education policy to be implemented right from the early school stages. Possibilities for implementing such a policy are being explored. Essential life skills are so often the outcome of an effective physical education. In fact, sports have been proven to actually raise IQ in addition to building confidence and teaching kids about managing emotions, such as self-control. Sports help children to learn hard work, patience, persistence, and how to respond positively to setbacks and failures. Most importantly, sports help a child to prepare to take on the many challenges that life has to offer and emerge victorious like a champion. Sports is an important part of the culture of the Gulf countries, especially endurance horse riding and show jumping, which have an immense traditional value, although we must not forget there are also other sports and sporting events that boast a rich history for us. For the above reasons, I warmly welcome the arrival of PowerUp, the first sports dedicated magazine to be based in Bahrain. It will be a fantastic tool for the people of Bahrain to view sports clubs and fixtures that are available on our island. It will expose them to new sports from around the world and introduce them to exciting existing sports they may wish to try.

Royal Endurance team showed strength in Belgium

HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa and the Royal Endurance Team participated in the 120km Belgium International Endurance Race for adult and junior riders from all over the world last August 1. The Royal Endurance Team’s participation in the Belgium Race was a first for the team. They have never been to Belgium before which constituted a new challenge especially in light of the difference in terrain and atmosphere in the European host country.

Ironman 70.3 date finalized

The Ironman 70.3 Middle East Triathlon championship has been confirmed to take place this year on December 5. The race course is expected to start from the Prince Khalifa Park and end at Bahrain International Circuit and will receive a wide range of international media coverage, this is because it attracts the largest number of athletes from all over the world. Suzy Alzeerah, Ironman’s communication manager said “We are expecting over 1,000 athletes from all over the world. So far, more than

Warrior Princess, four times on the podium

Not many athletes can show such consistency, but Caroline Steffen has finished her podium races four out of four times. She placed third in Ironman Frankfurt, (behind Daniela Ryf and Julia Gajer), and third in Ironman Melbourne and Frankfurt. This, and a slew of 70.3 wins plus a fifth placefinish at the Ironman World Championships last year guarantees her a spot in Ironman Kona this October. She earned her nickname the “Warrior Princess” because she is unstoppable on that field. Even now, she is already starting her 10week training block, which includes racing at Ironman 70.3 Sunshine Coast, and IMG International Beijing, before heading off to Hawaii for the World Championships. Good luck princess!

Bahrain Endurance 13 goes to Kona

Brent Mcmahon, Luke Bell, Caroline Steffen, Jodie Swallow, Frederick Croneborg, Paul Ambrose, Jan Frodeno, Ben Hoffman, Daniela Ryf, and Sebastian Kienle from the fabled endurance team all earned their spot at the Ironman World Championships in Kona. Kienle believes that this team is the strongest

triathlon team in the planet. He says “I believe that the members of the team are great role models for others to start to have a more active lifestyle. I think sports can do a lot of good things in the world”. Bahrain Endurance is about a relentless pursuit of excellence, no compromises, combined with a passion for winning! Green Tech downs Bangla tigers

Green Tech scored an 18-run victory over Bangla Tigers in the Kannada Sangha Bahrain Open Eight- a side Softball Cricket Tournament. Batting first, Green Tech scored 72 runs for five wickets

in their six overs with Junaid making an 11-ball 22 (2 sixes, 1 four) and Sameer an 11-ball 18 (1 six, 1 four). For Bangla Tigers, Milon claimed four wickets for one run. In reply, Bangla Tigers were restricted to 54 runs in six overs. Rasheed made a 16-ball 28 (4 sixes) while Mubasheer bagged three wickets for 12 runs.

HH Shaikh Khalid adds that participation in the forthcoming championship would further bolster Bahrain’s standing on the map of world sports.

Javier Gomez off to a good start at the 2016 Olympic Triathlon.

J

avier Gomez wasn’t going to disappoint. Not when he had the 2008, 2010, 2013, and 2014 ITU Championship under his belt. Not when he was the 2007, 2009, and 2012 European champion. Certainly not when he was the winner of 10 World Triathlon Series and 14 World Cups. And he also won the U23 World Champion 2003 award. Sure he wasn’t going to disappoint. Javier Gomez battled the Spanish sporting authorities who initially banned him from competing professionally when a routine medical test in 2000 revealed an “abnormal heart valve”. These setbacks did not deter him, but instead propelled him to go faster and farther. He did spectacularly! The minimum he needed to do was get on the podium at the 2015 Rio de Janeiro test event, but he went above and beyond by taking top honors to earn himself and Spain a sure spot in the 2016 Olympic men’s triathlon start list even as uneven road conditions caused problems for the athletes. unacceptable levels of disease causing viruses according to independent studies. Few of the elite triathletes complained about dirty water during the weekend races as they focused exclusively on

securing a spot in next year’s Olympics. Gomez finished in one hour 48 minutes and 26 seconds, 14 seconds ahead of France’s Vincent Luis. Notwithstanding all the hype surrounding this elite athlete, Javier is a simple guy, craving beer and pizza after a triathlon. He eats plain rice before a race and takes rock and roll music with him for easy runs. The best thing about running for Javier is that he can escape from the world for a bit. “When you’re fit, you can enjoy it. Pushing yourself to the limit and seeing that your times are going well, is a good feeling.” His first triathlon race was back in 1998, an Olympic distance run when he was only 15. He won first in the junior level and a tenth overall. It was definitely a precursor for what was to come next. His dominance in ITU, non-draft races, Xterra, and long course races is unparalleled. Javier says “For the distance we’re running, its not about running longer, but faster and further”

Natalia Molchanova, one of the greatest freedivers in the world disappeared while diving for fun.

atalia is a Russian champion freediver, multiple world record holder, and is the current President of the Russian Freedive Federation. In 2013, she became the only woman in diving history to break the 100-meter barrier at the world championships in Kalamata, Greece. She is widely regarded as the greatest free diver in history holding 41 world records by the time of her presumed death, and winning 23 gold medals during her lengthy career. She was also the first woman to dive on one breath through the Blue Hole arch in Dahab, Egypt. Although originally trained as a swimmer, she shifted from swimming to diving at the age of 40; and set a national record on her first freediving competition in Moscow. She pushed the boundaries of freediving for 12 years with her habit of setting off world records earning her the nickname “the Machine”. On August 2, 2015; she went missing after a

recreational dive and is presumed dead after search efforts were abandoned on August 5. Wearing her favourite purple wet suit, she set off on a chartered boat on the coast of Formentera, an island near Ibiza. The wetsuit

was a Molchanova, a special brand she started with her son, Alexey Molchanov. It was only 1.5 millimeters thick and was low buoyancy, specifically designed for divers who want to go deep in a single breath. On the day of her dive, she

attached 2 pounds of neck weight which would help her descend. She dipped into the water to begin what divers call “breathing up”. A lower heart rate enables divers to use precious oxygen more efficiently. To do so, one has to be deeply relaxed. Ms. Molchanova would have inhaled for a few seconds, then exhale twice as long and twice as deep. This was probably her last breath. The recreational dive she undertook was modest by her standards, but she never resurfaced. After two days of intense search efforts, her son, Alexey said his mother was not expected to be found alive. The freediving community is shocked. “She was a free-diving superstar, and we all thought nothing could harm her,” said Kimmo Lahtinen, the president of the global federation for free diving, known as AIDA. “Nothing could happen to her, but, you know, we are playing with the ocean, and when you play with the ocean, you know who is the strongest one.”

T

he F-16 ‘Fighting Falcon’ is a multi role fighter jet that is capable of engaging targets either in the air or on the ground in any weather condition. It has been used extensively across the world in a number of conflicts most notably in the Middle East during the Iraq invasion of Kuwait through to the most recent conflict in Yemen. Pilots from the Royal Bahraini Air Force have been at the controls of these aircraft during some of the most notable engagements of these campaigns, but where did this all start and what does it take to be a fighter pilot? The Bahrain Defence Force first introduced an air branch in 1977 flying helicopters in support of its ground forces. As time went on and the needs of the Defence Force changed due to the increasingly unstable nature of world politics the decision was taken to expand the capabilities of the air wing by purchasing F-5 fighter jets from the United States. The introduction of this aircraft in 1986 heralded a new era for the Defence Force and subsequently saw its reorganisation into three separate branches of Army, Navy and Air Force.

1990 saw the Air Force take delivery of a squadron of F-16 fighters at its Shaikh Isa Air Base which marked a huge increase in its capabilities. The purchase of these fighter jets was to prove extremely timely as in late 1990, forces from Iraq invaded its southern neighbour Kuwait. The response was swift and in January 1991, the Bahraini Air Force launched F-5 and F-16 fighters to attack Iraqi forces in Kuwait. The question is what does it take to pilot an aircraft capable of achieving speeds

a ‘G’ suit. The suit is specially designed to force blood back to the muscles which keeps a pilot from blacking out (known as G-LOC, G induced Loss of Consciousness) and losing control of a multimillion dollar aircraft. However, even with a ‘G’ suit, pilots of these supersonic aircraft have to push

Well firstly we must put that into perspective, an astronaut in the space shuttle on launch would experience 3-G’s and the world’s largest and fastest rollercoasters generally don’t pull more than two to three G. An average human will pass out at 4 or 5-G and it is only possible for the pilots of these supersonic fighter jets to fly through a combination of peak physical fitness and

themselves to their limits to fight off the effects of combat induced G-force. Their fitness regime is tougher than that experienced by most athletes including Formula 1 drivers. It starts before dawn with either sprint sessions or a distance run which aims to build up the pilots’ endurance and strengthen muscles. The pilots then receive briefings on the days’ training which is followed by taking the jets through a series of gruelling manoeuvres to simulate a

‘dog fight’ with an enemy fighter. The training doesn’t stop there, following the post-flight briefing the pilots then hit the gym to be put through either a strenuous circuit training session or a free weights strengthening session designed to get the muscles ready to fly an aircraft capable of flying at twice the speed of sound. The pilots are subject to an annual medical checkup to ensure that they remain in perfect health. Those that don’t maintain their fitness will be removed from flying duties until they are physically fit enough to withstand the rigours of being a fighter pilot. Notorious is a fighter that is rightly named.

U

nless you have been living as a hermit on an island somewhere in the South Pacific you will have undoubtedly heard of the name ‘Conor McGregor’ At the age of 27 McGregor has fought his way from his humble background in Ireland to the bright lights of Las Vegas where on 11 July 2015, he won a hard fought fight at Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) 189 to win the UFC Featherweight ‘Interim’ Championship. So where did this fighting machine appear from? Born in Dublin, Ireland on 14 July 1988, the 27 year old started his working career as a plumber. However, McGregor’s passion was fighting, and he is good at it, in fact he epitomises the term ‘Fighting Irish’. His love of contact sports started early when he took up boxing in a little backstreet gym in his hometown of Dublin. This passion for contact sports led him to make the SPORTS & FITNESS

McGregor’s early career was spent in his homeland of Ireland fighting on the Mixed Martial Arts circuit. His attention

however was soon drawn to the UFC after attending UFC 93. He was so enthralled by the experience that he set his sights on a career in the Octagon. McGregor began training under John Kavenagh, a renowned Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist at Team SGB Ireland. In order to expand his fighting skills he began to study Tae Kwon Do, Karate, Capoeira (a Brazilian martial art founded in the 16th Century) and kickboxing. In his first professional MMA fight at Cage of Truth 2, McGregor defeated his opponent Gary Morris by a second round TKO and there began a professional career that would spark a world of interest in the young man from Dublin. 2011 saw McGregor begin a streak of 13 wins, eleven of which were either technical knockouts or knockouts. In fact he has one of the fastest recorded knockouts in MMA ending the fight in just 4 seconds. The speed of McGregor’s rise to success, his devastating punching ability

and the fact that he was the first Irish fighter to hold three MMA titles meant that he sped up the European rankings which subsequently brought him quickly to the attention of the UFC. He made his first appearance in the UFC Octagon in April 2013 having signed a multi-fight contract with the UFC in April of that year. He won the fight in under a minute through TKO and earned this first ‘Knockout of the night’ award. This was followed by a string of wins and led to a fight against Dennis Siver in Jan 2015. It proved to be a one sided fight with McGregor winning by TKO in the second round. It was followed by an audacious move by the young fighter as McGregor jumped from the Octagon and confronted the then champion Jose Aldo. It was enough and a fight was scheduled for 11 July 2015. McGregor put himself through a tough training regime to counter the skills of Aldo. However, in the two weeks leading up to the fight Aldo withdrew due to an injury sustained in training. Instead of calling off the fight the UFC found an alternative fighter, Chad Mendes, the #1 ranked contender for the Championship. Many believed that McGregor would back away from the fight stating that ‘McGregor has never fought against a fighter of Mendes capability and technique’ (McGregor prefers to trade blows on his feet while Mendes is a renowned wrestler). How wrong they were, McGregor stepped up to the challenge and strode into the Octagon to face one of the best fighters in the world. Fans from all around the world were glued to their screens waiting for one of the most eagerly anticipated fights in UFC history. The first round looked to be ready to prove McGregor’s doubters right with Mendes grounding his opponent quickly and delivering a series of powerful blows that McGregor had no answer to. McGregor’s fans were stunned and his family back in Ireland were shocked to see the

local hero being pummelled by an ‘on form’ Mendes. The first round ended with McGregor bloodied and Mendes looking like the #1 ranked contender in the featherweight division. Round two looked to be a continuation of the first round with Mendes taking his opponent to the ground quickly and scoring some heavy blows with his elbows. McGregor wasn’t done though, he fought to stay on his feet and trade blows but even when taken down he managed to fend off a submission by the experienced Mendes. However, with just over 30 seconds left on the clock McGregor managed to get to his feet and unleashed a series of punishing blows.

Mendes was forced up against the cage wall and McGregor went in for the kill landing a series of powerful blows before unleashing a devastating left. That was enough for the referee who stepped in to stop the fight, adding yet another TKO to McGregor’s already impressive record. McGregor had not only decimated another opponent but had proved his doubters wrong once and for all. Watersports Bahrain You probably thought that you can’t enjoy the water in a desert island; but Bahrainis are inventive and came up with fun ways to connect with the sea.

espite living in an archipelago (a group of islands), most Bahrainis are aquaphobic, (according to an article in Time Out Bahrain. This belies the rich seafaring history and pearling tradition of the country. But with the advent of technology and cars, the Bahraini locals soon retreated to dry land. However with the opening of the Khalifa bin Salman port which aims to make Bahrain the Gulf Hub of shipping, as well as the new Team Pindar government initiative Sail Bahrain, the country might be making a comeback to its offshore roots. project is about returning Bahrainis to the ocean, which is essentially where their heritage has been for the past 4,000 years. Fifi wreck is extremely popular for night dives. Caisson wreck is a concrete and steel structure home to numerous fishes. Fasht Najwah is an excellent dive location as well as a great place to spot whale sharks. Bahrain pearl is reputed to be the finest dive spot in Bahrain, where clown fish, trigger fish, surgeon fish, turtles, rays, lion fish, grouper, snapper, crayfish, and

even whale sharks, can be found. The Coral Beach Club has among its many amenities, a 56-foot dive and charter boat—the first of its kind on the island; and is also home to many legendary parties, including the F1 after party. Bahrain will be competing in all four categories with their elite team of sailors. They hope to top last year’s performance by a considerable margin. KHK MMA TEAM The Elite Squad The KHK MMA team signed eight professional, and 14 amateur fighters and unveiled the team jersey in a press conference graced by HH Shaikh Khalid in order to strengthen fight culture in the country.

T

he KHK MMA team would go down in history as the catalyst for promoting mixed martial arts in the country of Bahrain. Since its inception, the amount of support for the team has proved staggering given that Bahrain sent the first squadron of elite fighters to compete in the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC), the biggest International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) event in the world, in the Gulf region. Not only that, Bahrain will also be hosting the 2016 IMMAF season next

year! It’s easy to believe that the country is fast becoming the sporting hub of the Middle East, especially with the rising popularity of MMA amongst sports fans. Journalist Duane Finnley expressed his surprise “to see a sport [he’d] covered for years, taking hold in a place where six months ago, a footprint didn’t even exist.” Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar says “MMA is the fastest growing sport in the world and for HH Shaikh Khalid to make an MMA team, it pushes the envelope and makes it that much more popular in the Middle East”. The team, handpicked by

HH Shaikh Khalid, consists of top professional and amateur fighters. The eight professional fighters who signed their contracts amidst the roar and fanfare of the press were Mohammed “The Hawk” Shahid, Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov, Alejandro “Extremo” Soto, Islam Makhachev, Jose “Shorty” Torres, Hamza Alkooheji, Eldar Eldarov, and Frans Mlambo. The amateur fighters are Abada Al Mulla, Atif Mohamed, Hamza Zareerah, Hussein Ayad, Hassan Ayad, Abdulla Cena, Isa Mohammed, Ibrahim Ibrahimi, Abdelaziz Monjahry, Naji Mohammed, Maitham

Ahmed, Mohammed Adnan, Fahad Abdelrazaq, and James Gregor. In addition, the team has recruited international coaching talent John Kavanagh, and former UFC fighter Pete Williams. In their advisory team is Ali AbdelAziz, World Series of Fighting Vice President and MMA staple in the United States, who lends a hand with regards to talent and team structure. HH Shaikh Khalid is especially hands-on with the KHK Team, attending the training sessions and participating in the training as well. An assessment routine is built into each practice session with the aim of consistently raising the

bar with each performance. “The Hawk” Shahid, also serves as the team manager, and works closely with HH Shaikh Khalid in grooming talent at the grass-roots level. The team will compete across different MMA competitions while representing the same team. KHK will allow the experience of the seasoned professionals to channel through to the younger fighters. “We know there is a lot of work to be done, but we are committed to building a great team here at KHK,” says the very passionate team manager. At the moment, they plan to build a foundation for MMA in Bahrain by hosting monthly events like Amateur Fight Nights. It is clear that at this early stage, KHK MMA’s vision is already crystallized. They want to build a unit of the best domestic talent available while bringing in top international talent to expose their roster to elitelevel talent. KHK is truly going global. Since resources are crucial for fighters to develop their game, especially for amateur fighters who find it hard to get exposure to top facilities and coaches in the industry; the fact that KHK will have both amateurs and professionals competing in the same team will unify these resources and in turn could help amateurs make the push to professional status (Hamza Mohammed, GDN online, Aug.21, 2015). And its not just about building a great fight team in Bahrain. MMA legend Renzo Gracie said that “KHK [will be] a link between Bahrain and the world. Because the world will know Bahrain through its fighters, and with that they will know their culture, their way of seeing life and the beauty of this amazing island.”

Mohammed “The Hawk” Shahid

Shahid is the team manager of KHK MMA. Coming from the Super Fight League in India, he is the first fighter from the GCC to be in a Main Event of a Super Fight League (SFL) show. He trains and coaches at Bahrain Mixed Martial Arts in Tubli. Yusuf Al-Kooheji, co-owner of Bahrain Mixed Martial Arts says that “Shahid is looked upon as a role model by many in the country. He is very focused and trains hard for this and has inspired a lot of people through his dedication”. Shahid is the most experienced MMA fighter in the kingdom with nine undefeated amateur fights and three professional fights. He was fighter of the year in 2010 and 2011 and won Fight of the Night in his first professional fight in the SFL. Shahid says “I always wanted to make a difference, make history. I quit my schooling while I was in high school and started the journey of being the best person and fighter I can be through mixed martial arts”.

UFC champion Rafael dos Anjos and is considered by many to be the greatest lightweight fighter in the world today. This MMA prodigy started his dazzling career in September 2008, compiling four wins under a month, with three wins on one night alone. Over the next three years he would go undefeated, triumphing over 11 out of 12 opponents. He won the M-1 Selection

Tournament and made a perfect 16-0 record in the regional circuits of Russia, and Ukraine before being called to fight in the big cage. In 2011, Nurmagomedov signed a six-fight deal to compete in the UFC championships defeating all of his opponents via submission and knock-outs consolidating his reputation as a giant of a fighter.

Makhachev is of Dagestan-Lak origin, a mixed martial artist, judoka, sambist, and multiple combat sambo World Champion. He made his M-1 Global Debut in 2011 and won the fight via knock-out on the first round. His next fight was with an undefeated Mansour Barnaoui, and he won again by unanimous decision. He next faced undefeated Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belter Rander Junio and again won by unanimous decision. He then defeated two more opponents via submission which is no easy feat. He has gone on from win to bigger wins since then. As a mixed martial artist, he has won the ProFC Union National Cup; the Combat Sambo Russian National Championships (four times!); and he was North Caucasian Federal district National Champion for grappling. Jose “Shorty” Torres

Shorty is ranked 2nd of 120 Nevada amateur bantamweights. He started wrestling in high school although he suffered from bad grades. He entered Triton’s College, enrolling in an associate degree and joining the collegiate wrestling team—where he found success—winning national titles, placing fourth in the nation with the most wins in a season, receiving all-American honors and awards for MVP and Men’s Athlete of the Year at Triton. He credits his success in wrestling and in the books to his coach, graduating in Triton with a 3.5 GPA and going on to McKendree University in Lebanon with an athletic and academic scholarship; a feat that he is very proud of. Shorty says “If you can push yourself through all the hard work, pain, and agony, to achieve what you want to achieve, then the outcome is your pride and success”.

In all of Eldar Eldarov’s professional fights, he only lost to KHK teammate Nurmagomedov. He won the MMA Russian Cup Fight Night, the Russian MMA Championship—St. Petersburg MMA Championship, the SFC Siberian Fighting Championship, the TFC 3-Tsumada Fighting Championship in various submission stances. There is more to be seen in this welterweight champ as he practices his way to top form in the team.

Before joining the UFC, Soto was actually a dolphin trainer and so he doesn’t miss the ocean much he freedives and swims as part of his training. His favorite grappling technique is the dolphin wrangler (it figures!). He hits the gym with strength and conditioning exercises, boxing, muay thai, BJJ, and MMA. And that goes on all day! Soto is a two-time UWC Mexico bantamweight champion holding a black belt in Mexican judo. He won three wins by submission and two by knockout.

Hamza Alkooheji

Alkooheji was the first Bahraini fighter to fight and win in the MMA in a professional level. He fought in the Super Fight League in India in 2012 and won via submission. In the recently concluded Desert Force 17 which took place in Jordan, he brought home the featherweight title to Bahrain. He won the fight on a Knock-out in the second round. With his dedication and the full support of his coaches Eldar Eldarov and Mohammed Shahid, Desert Force can expect an upgraded Al Kooheji every time he enters the cage. The champ has a 3-0 record under the Desert Force banner.

Frans Mlambo

Known as the Black Mamba for his dangerous and stealthy moves, Mlambo was a boxer before he started MMA. Mlambo who is a Seventh-Day Adventist says “If I do well here, I can reach more people with my message”. This pro boxer has trained with the likes of Connor “Notorius” McGregor and never forgets how privileged he is. He says “I like to remind myself and step it up in training. There are no amateur fighters that have this kind of preparation and that’s motivating me. There are people in the UFC that don’t have these kind of camps”. The Black Mamba adds “Once I have my ground game locked down and I’m really fit, I think it would have to be some kind of savage to beat me”. True enough, Mlambo gave Ireland its very first World Amateur Championship win as he defeated Joel Moya in the IMMAF World Championships this year. He defeated three other fighters during the week to earn his gold medal. In top form, Mlambo is something to watch out for.

So it’s your first triathlon and you’re worried about making it to the finish? Here are some tips to help you cope on your big day. Triathlons are more than just the sum of its component parts—swim, bike, and run. Preparation is key to the game. Most pros would say that 10,000 hours of practice makes perfect. Before your triathlon you’re probably asking yourself these questions:

What if I have a panic attack during the swim and hyperventilate and drown? What if I forget where I put my bike and wander around transition like an idiot? What if I drop a water bottle and get dehydrated? What if I make a total fool of myself?

1 Start fueling for

the race at least a day ahead

To have a good race, you should start fueling properly at least 24 hours before the race starts. This doesn’t mean that you should eat more than normal. You should actually reduce portion sizes, go light on the pasta and be sure to include protein in all your meals. Fish, chicken, beans, beef, turkey, and tempeh are all good sources of protein and they should outweigh refined grains, sweets, and sugary drinks at your meals. Finish your morning meal two-and-a-half to three hours before your race starts. Stay away from fat-laden breakfasts like donuts and cold cuts.

3 Practice

Set up a transition area in your yard and run through everything you’ll need to do on race day. Practice getting out of your wetsuit, cap and goggles, and into your bike shoes and helmet. Then practice dismounting the bike and changing from your cycling gear into your running gear. You’ll become more efficient and will shave off those seconds the more you practice.

4 Mentally

rehearse the order of things

After you set up your transition area, mentally rehearse your transitions. Don’t get tripped up and lose those precious minutes. Know the order you will put on your bike and run gear. Before you walk away, make sure your bike is in low gear. This will help your breathing rate and your heart rate rise naturally when you start the bike portion of the race. A high gear will force your heart beat up too high, too fast. Also check your tire pressure to make sure they’re in the right range (80 to 120 psi), “If they’re properly inflated, that’s like getting free speed”.

First of all, keep calm. Don’t let these fears stop you from being an elite triathlete. On your first big race, you’ll have to know what to eat—and how much; how to warm up, both physically and mentally;

and what little things can make a big difference in transition and during the race. Here’s how to conquer and dominate the swim, bike, and run.

2 Map out the

transition area

Transitions are often where races are won or lost, especially in short races where every second counts. Note where the entrance from the swim is located in relation to what isle you’re in; take

Elephant walk, torso twist, and mock freestyle swim strokes to lubricate your shoulders are all good warm-up exercises. Stay warm, wear gloves and bonnets if necessary.

6 Don’t try

anything fancy

Only do the moves, eat the food, or go with the gear that you have trained with. Doing anything new at this time is not a good idea as you it might just slow you down, upset your stomach, or cause you injury.

7 Do more lake swimming

If you’re nervous about swimming in open water, then do more lake swimming, which is vastly different from pool swimming. The miles you swim will eventually taper your performance.

8 Get in the proper position

The swim part can be hectic, especially if this your first time to swim in open water with a lot of people competing with you. Unless you’re a strong swimmer, try to position yourself away from the chaos. Marty Gal, coach of Step One Beyond says “Newbies are wise to avoid the chaos by starting off easy”. Be mentally ready for the shock of the water entry. And remember, the zipper on your wetsuit goes in the back. Wear something underneath, because it would be a long race if you forgot.

9 Don’t panic

Getting caught up in the wave of swimmers in the open sea can feel more than a little scary, and its dangerous as well. Keep your wits about you as you negotiate your way to the finish line. Marty Gal has this fabulous advice for when you panic “Roll over on your back, take a few deep breaths, and think happy thoughts. Seriously.” You can also try looking up at the sky on the inhale, this will calm you down. Also, wiggle your fingers lightly on the recovery part of the stroke to help trigger relaxation on

your upper half.

10 Sight right

View the swim course ahead of time, including key turns before your wave. Take mental note of the key turns and match them with something on the shore if possible. If you can swim the course, or sections of the course the day before. It’s important to sight while you swim to make sure you stay on course. It’ll also help you clock a faster split. Triumph multisport coach, Kate Schnatterbeck says “Figure out the shortest line to get to each buoy, and pick your head up often. The more you do, the straighter you’ll swim.”

11 Kick it in

“As you get close to the end, kick a little more to get the blood flowing to be ready for standing up and running,” Schnatterbeck says. “Swim as far into the shore as you can, even if you’re touching the bottom. Then take short strides all the way to the transition area.”

12 Pause for breath

A lot of people get vertigo when coming out of the water onto solid ground. This is totally normal when your body goes quickly from horizontal to vertical. At the end of your swim, stand up slowly putting your hands on your knees for stability. Pause, keeping your eyes to the ground; then slowly raise your head and start walking.

13 Don’t eat

anything in Transition 1 (T1)

Wait eight to 15 minutes before taking in liquid or food. Your heart rate should rise and your breathing should reach a steady state (equilibrium), before you take in calories. One of the biggest problems triathletes have is that they eat too much too soon.

You should be on a steady drip system. Think smaller quantities, not big gulps. Sip your fluids every eight minutes.

14 Remember where you left your bike

This might sound elementary but you don’t want to spend minutes circling the parking lot looking for your bike. Best to put a colored towel or a colored balloon to mark it. Bonus, you’ll cheer up when you see it.

15 Spin it out

No need to go all out on the bike from the gate. “Spin your legs for a few minutes to loosen up, then get into your pace”, Schnatterbeck says. Use the

same principle when you’re heading into transition for the run “Shift down into an easy gear and spin your legs so that you’ll feel better heading into the run”.

16 Remember the rules

It’s easy to lose your cool on the bike, especially if you brake or swerve as you weave your way around other competitors. Make sure to ride on the right hand side of the lane and pass on the left. Remember that everyone is nervous, so stay as controlled as possible to avoid an accident.

17 Be smart on the bike

Start your ride slowly and ease

up to your comfortable gear. If you’re comfortable standing up and have a flat stretch of road about 30 minutes into the bike, take advantage of the opportunity to stretch your hip flexors by standing up and leaning slightly forward with your hips. Don’t drink anything within the last 10 minutes of the bike. Don’t hurry coming into Transition 2 (T2). If it’s wet, it can be slippery. Just take your time and walk through the transition.

18 Get ready to run

Your legs may feel like jell-o but that feeling will pass. Stay strong, stand tall, and keep running until you hit your normal stride. Get your arms moving at the beginning to help bring up your leg speed.

Practicing some transition runs before the race can help you get familiar with that feeling of running off the bike. If running isn’t your thing, keep in mind that it’s only a sprint and you’ll be done before you know it.

19 Break it up

The finish line may seem like an eternity away but you can trick your brain into thinking it’s closer by breaking up the run into segments. “Go from mile marker to mile marker and just keep moving forward. Run tall and smile, it’ll help others out there too”, Schnatterbeck says. Stand tall, tuck your pelvis, draw up your ribs, and run proud. This is the last leg of the triathlon!

For 26 years, thousands of athletes from around the world have gathered together in Istanbul to compete, challenge, and defy their limits. Few stretches of water in the world can match the mix of physical challenge and sheer emotional exhilaration that the Bosphorus Strait offers to swimmers making the legendary crossing from Asia to Europe. The Bosphorus is rarely tranquil, rarely suitable, and this is what makes it such a challenge. These currents were first celebrated in ancient Greek mythology. It is a swirl of competing currents, and the race’s challenge is not so much its distance as charting a precise course through the treacherous flow of water. The powerful current can reach up to seven knots and virtually halves the length of the race. This adventure, which began with 4 female and 64 male athletes in 1989 has grown to become an important part of the Turkish sports tradition. This year there were a record number of 1,870 swimmers from 49 countries. From aged 14 to 83, nearly 50 countries

gathered to witness this historic “people’s swim”. The event encompasses a 6.5 km open sea swim from Kanlıca on the Asian side to Kuruçeşme Cemil Topuzlu Park on the European side of İstanbul. The Samsung Bosphorus Cross-Continental Race is open to everyone, from children to the disabled, tradesmen to holding owners. The number of athletes increase each year and public awareness is gaining momentum while the Olympic spirit is growing larger to embrace everyone until the energy of the race spreads from the Bosphorus to the whole world. As a beginner, it is best to train twice a week for the first month or two. After that, you can exercise three or four times a week if you feel strong enough. A safe and practical idea for exercises in this age group is to do a variety of exercises and multiple sets that engage the same muscles.

Curl 1 Biceps Stand straight with a dumbbell in each hand at arms

length, exhale and curl the weights while contracting your biceps. Hold for a brief pause as you squeeze your biceps. Inhale and go back to start. Do 3 sets of 5 reps.

Press 2 Leg Using a leg press machine, press the platform all the

way up until your legs are fully extended in front of you. Inhale, and slowly lower the platform until your upper and lower legs make a 90-degree angle. Exhale and repeat. Do 3 sets of 3 reps.

3 Barbell Bench Press

Lie back on a flat bench, lift the bar from the rack and hold it in front of you with your arms locked. Breathe in and come down slowly until the bar touches your middle chest. Push the bar back to its starting position. Do 3 sets of 3 reps.

4 Pulldowns

Using a pulldown machine, grab the bar with the palms facing forward using the prescribed grip, bring the bar down until it touches your upper chest by drawing the shoulders and the upper arms down and back. Go back to starting position. Do 3 reps.

5 Seated Cable Rows

Using a low pulley row machine with a V-bar, pull back until your torso is at a 90-degree angle from your leg. Your back should be slightly arched and your chest should be sticking out. Breathe out as you perform the movement squeezing your muscles hard. Go back to starting position. Do 3 sets of 3 reps.

6 Squats From a standing position, move the hips back and

When you regularly get your heart into the aerobic range, you lower your risk of heart attack and can relieve depression. All yoga exercises improve cardiovascular conditioning. On our second month of chronicling Bribin’s fitness makeover, we engage with his trainer Ahmed Mujtaba as well as the fitness regimen that Bribin underwent in order to lose a whopping six kilos in two months time!

Ahmed Mujtaba hen pressed with the task of making our then slightly flabby Bribin almost muscular, Ahmed stepped up to the challenge. He is a platinum trainer at Fitness First and is a NASM Corrective Exercise Doctor Referral Certified from London, UK. He also has certifications in the following: Obesity and Diabetes (Level IV), Fitness (Level 111 from Australia), Kettle Bell (from London, UK), and TRX (from London, UK). His exercise specialities are bodybuilding and body transformation, competition preparation, corrective exercise, injury rehabilitation and flexibility, strength & conditioning, obesity & fat loss, posture and biomechanics correction as well as nutrition guidance. With such credentials under his belt, he was clearly the guru on how to help Bribin lose weight. He was motivating yet tough, focusing not just on the exercise regime but also on Bribin’s nutrition. Case in point: Bribin used to eat a big container of vegetable biryani before engaging with Fitness First. When Ahmed asked him what he was eating, Bribin said “only vegetables”, and he showed the container. Ahmed quickly told Bribin to stop that as, it was not only the type of food but the portion sizes that were affecting him. Fitness makeover

Now, Bribin thrives on a diet of boiled chicken breasts and egg in small portions. This plus the exercise regime has helped him to keep losing the weight and actually getting muscle mass. What made this program so effective was that aside from the gym sessions that Bribin religiously kept at 6AM everyday(!), Bribin was encouraged to keep moving using an exercise that is easy for him and fun to do. Walking, table tennis, racket ball, and push-ups kept him going long after the gym sessions and helped kickstart

his metabolism for losing even more weight. Ahmed clearly told Bribin to expend more energy than he takes in and this accounts for the almost six kilos of weight loss. Now, with two months of the fitness regime over, Bribin plans to take his fitness to the next level, with continued exercise and diet plans to include more organic and healthily prepared food (no sugar, salt, or oil). Kaiju Big Battel. Who said sports and performance art don’t mix? Wrestling has already given us a preview of how choreographed stunts and face contortioning can provide for maximum entertainment. Add to that, the otaku like craze of dressing up like cartoon characters, and you have Kaiju Big Battel. This sport was created by a Massachussets based performance entertainment troupe Studio Kaiju created by Rand and David Borden. The performances are parodies of both professional wrestling and the tokosatsu kaiju eiga films of Japan. The costumed performers play the roles of giants, city-crushing monsters, and other forces of evil. There are plenty of referential jokes during the event which reference Mexican wrestling, superhero comic books, and Japanese popular culture. They have a hilarious website where fans can search events, look up their heroes, and buy tickets and other merchandise. Check out www.kaiju.com for details.

Philippines

The national martial art sport of the Philippines emphasizing weapons based fighting. The primary weapon in arnis is the rattan stick, which varies in size, but is usually 28 inches (71 cm.) in length. Both single and double stick techniques are taught in schools in physical education programs, as well as unarmed defenses against the stick, and against bladed weapons. Arnis also includes hand to hand combat, joint locks, grappling, and weapon disarming techniques. Other aspects of the art include espada y daga (sword and dagger fighting), sinawali (double stick weaving patterns), and tapi-tapi (locking drills with the stick). In addition to partner drills, Modern Arnis includes the use of anyo (kata), solo forms both with and without the stick. Practitioners are called arnisadors. It is one of the oldest Philippine sports, the origin of which can be traced back to native fighting techniques during conflicts among the various Prehispanic Filipino tribes.

Bali, Indonesia

A major grand prix in Jembrana, West Bali, which features buffalo racing. It literally means chase, and is a unique tradition that originated in the agrarian life scene in Bali. Hundreds of pairs of buffaloes are teamed up with their jockeys riding the traditional wooden ploughs that are slightly modified for the competition. It is a wild ride for sure. The racing buffaloes, called kerbau pepadu, compete in various open race circuits in assorted heats around the district of Melaya, leading up to the finals, or what has come to be known as the Jembrana Regent’s Cup, and the Governor’s Cup, held annually. Before the race became popular in the 1930’s, it took place on wet fields to facilitate the working of agricultural land. Now it takes place on dry land.

Running with the bulls. Definitely one of the most dangerous sports around and not for the faint of heart. The sporting event happens from the 6th to the 14th of July, in the region of Navarra as part of a fiesta/ celebration for San Fermin. This is where annually, thousands of people lead the bulls through the streets of the old quarter as far as the bull ring. According to the Mayor of Pamplona in his foreword to the book Fiesta: How To Survive The Bulls Of Pamplona the origin of this event comes from the need to transport the bulls from the fields outside the city, where they were bred, to the bullring, where they would be killed in the evening. During this ‘run’, youngsters would jump among them to show off their bravado. In Pamplona and other places, the six bulls in the event are still those that will feature in the afternoon bullfight of the same day.

A version of medieval football played in Scotland around Christmas and New Year. Historically, some form of football has been practiced throughout Scotland and England for at least three centuries. Records from 1797 indicate that “Football is the principal diversion of the common people, which they practice with great dexterity”. Ba is basically mob football or village football. arate is a sport that is based on the principles of Bushido. Bushido literally means the “way of the warrior”, the samurai way of life, loosely equated to the Western term of chivalry. Shoshin Nagamine said that karate “may be considered as the conlict within oneself, or as a life-long marathon, which can be won only through selfdiscipline, hard training, and one’s own creative efforts”. The do suffix in karatedo implies that karatedo is a path to self-knowledge, not just a study of the technical aspects of fighting. Karate teaches not only self-defense but also respect to the individual and the community. In true karate, body, mind, and spirit, the whole person must be developed simultaneously. As Japan Karate Association says “the body remembers how to move, and the mind remembers how to be still. The result of karate is natural, effortless action; and the

confidence, humility, openness, and peace only possible through perfect unity of mind and body”. Gichin Funakoshi, the father of karate says that “The ultimate aim of karate lies not in victory nor defeat, but in the perfection of the character of its participants”. In karate, the starting point is not as important as the effort you put in along the way. As long as there is a disciplined commitment to work hard and train patiently, the practice of karate will improve your fitness level as you progress. Karate enjoins people to “be constantly mindful, diligent, and resourceful in your pursuit of the way” (www.jka-bahrain.com). Patience is another virtue that is developed in training.

A Guide to Karate Karate is a sport that trains both the body and the mind.

History

Karate is a martial art developed in Okinawa, Japan. It literally means “empty hand” although the correct term is karate-do “way of the empty hand”. The hands are empty because it is weaponless. It was brought to the Japanese mainland during a time of cultural exchanges

between the Japanese and the Chinese in the early 20th century. The Japanese king, Sho Hashi, forbade the use of weapons on Okinawa as a national policy. Karate developed as a means of unarmed self-defense. Although training in karate was first conducted with the utmost secrecy, in the Meiji period, commissioner Shintaro Ogawa, adopted a policy that later on led to karate being part of the physical education programs of Okinawa schools. After World War II, Okinawa became an important US military base, and karate became popular among the servicemen stationed there. Martial arts movies, like those with Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan, served

to increase the popularity of martial arts around the world. The modernization and systematization of karate included the adoption of the white uniform which consists of the kimono and the karategi, or the belt, the color of which signifies one’s rank.

Basics

Its predominantly a striking sport, using punching, kicking, knee-strikes, elbow strikes, and open hand techniques such as knifehands, spear-hands, and palm-heel strikes. In some modern styles, there is also grappling, throws, joint locks, restraints, and vital point strikes. A karate practitioner is called a karateka. Training is divided into kihon (basics or fundamentals), kata (forms), and kumite (sparring). Each karateka undergoes training in the kata. In Japanese, this means Shape and Form. It is a collection of strikes, kicks, and blocks, depicting defensive counter-attack movements against single or multiple attackers. These moves or postures are based on idealized combat applications. Kata training is very demanding as it requires endless effort in repeating each Kata with an ultimate goal of perfecting the moves, training, and finishing of each Kata. Kumite or “meeting of hands” is sparring, which is practiced both as a sport and self-defense training. Levels of physical contact vary considerably with full contact karate, kickboxing, and other variants of karate.

How to improve

There are 10 Kyu and 10 Dan in karate. Dan literally means step or stage, which is used to mean one’s rank or grade. Dan is

used for the higher ranks, and kyu for the lower ranks. To obtain certification (belt) for each rank, one must fulfill the certification requirements and testing procedure. Testing—or grading is carried out by a panel of instructors. Examiners look for ease and naturalness of execution, speedy and powerful kime, and smooth, instantaneous, dynamic elasticity of delivery. Because karate is a self-

defense sport, one of its guiding principles is that “there is no first strike”. Karate students are taught to refrain from violent behavior. Instead, it is a means of self-defense and wholesome self-discipline. It makes adjustments according to the opponent. Teachers say that the outcome of a battle depends on how one handles emptiness

The hot weather and our hectic lifestyles all contribute to migraines. Here are some tips to deal with it. r. Michael Sellman, chief of neurology at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore say that migraine headaches are one of the most common neurology problems. It typically begins in adolescence, and can be genetic in nature. Women get migraine headaches three times more often than men. It is estimated that 15 percent Health & Wellness

of all women get migraine headaches and 5 percent of all men as well. Migraine pain is as real as the pain of injuries but healthy habits and simple, nonmedical remedies can stop the pain before it starts. The same lifestyle choices that promote good health can also reduce the frequency and severity of your migraines. The symptoms of migraines include nausea, distortions in vision, sensitivity to light, and other afflictions. They are typically felt on one side of the head and includes

moderate to severe throbbing pain and fatigue. All primary headaches are triggered by irritants driving the same engine of pain — the swelling and constriction of blood vessels in the brain. Drugs may often cause multiple side effects, including worse rebound headaches down the road. Instead of popping a pill whenever you have an onset of migraines, it is generally better to identify triggers and to take natural steps to deal with the pain.

Sleeping at different times can cause your body to suffer because sometimes it gets too much sleep, and sometimes too little. Six to eight hours is ideal for most people.

Bright or fluorescent lights can trigger migraines. These include 3D movies, arcade lights, and spotlights.

Problems have a way of flooding our brain with adrenaline causing it to be fully wired, which if continued way past an emergency will cause migraines. Take time to unwind and stay away from stressful situations. Learn skills that can calm you down like deep breathing.

Get proper rest and sleep to help you relax and get ready for a new day. If you sit for long amounts of time, get up and stretch often. Relax your jaw, neck, and shoulders.

3 Exercise

Don’t stare too long at the computer screen or sleep with your cellphone beside you. Allow your eyes to rest too.

5 Close the door

Don’t carry over one part of your life to the next. Use your bed only for sleeping and not for working. Don’t carry problems at work to home and vice versa. Learn how to close the door and this will be better for your emotional health.

6 Keep a routine
