Piper first painted the famous Château de Chambord in 1971, the year he visited Venice to make designs for Benjamin Britten's opera Death in Venice. The roof pavilions at Chambord corresponded to Piper’s original designs for Death in Venice which used a group of tall revolving structures. A smaller painting Chambord Rooftops II was exhibited in the Tate Gallery’s 1983 Piper Retrospective and Piper later produced a similar image as one of his largest screenprints.
