A week filled with activities and the return of old events
PARK COUNTY FAIR WEEK BY BRADEN SCHILLER Tribune staff writer
P
ark County Fair will once again provide fairgoers with the opportunity to show off their livestock, enjoy some music and other performances, choose from a variety of food vendors and of course offer some carnival ride fun. Free entertainment This year will also mark the 112th year of the Park including music, County Fair and the second for Events Coordinator dancing, magic and year Billy Wood. The thrill of Figure 8 Racing has been absent from the Park County Fairgrounds for the past nine years and pig wrestling took a break last year due to high costs and inability of the previous supplier to locate enough pigs. Tuesday and Wednesday recurring events and ser-
vices will begin to open to the public. Carnival rides will power on at 6 p.m. on Tuesday and see the last of its riders at midnight. Wednesday through Saturday the carnival will start at noon and run until midnight. Free entertainment including music, dancing, magic and hypnotism will be offered all week long from noon until 9 p.m. on the Pepsi free stage. The beer garden will open at 4 p.m Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and close at 11 p.m. It will be open at noon and close at midnight on Friday and Saturday. Beginning at 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, 4-H breakfast will be served in the kitchen of Homesteader Hall. The exhibit hall will be open to the public beginning at 11 a.m. Wednesday and close at 10:30 p.m. which will continue for the rest of the week. Also on Wednesday, the livestock barn will be open for the public until Saturday. The hall will open at noon and close at 10:30 p.m. Each night there will be special events in the grandstands and every evening will be different. One event will feature stock dogs, another will feature vehicular mayhem and the concert will feature musical performances from two artists with Wyoming roots. Each day of fair week is sponsored by a local busi-
ness. Tuesday is Family Fun Fair Day sponsored by the Big Horn Radio Network. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are Park County Days sponsored (in order) by the Powell Tribune, Northwest College and TCT. Admission is free until 1 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. Saturday is Kick Up Your Heels Day sponsored by DSE Enterprises. Tickets for the fair will be $16 for a weekly pass, $6 for The exhibit hall will a daily pass. It’s possible that some kids will not be selling their livestock at Saturday’s sale if an animal doesn’t make weight or due to other various reasons. Kids may have multiple animals tagged, but will sell only one animal at Saturday’s sale.

Wyoming’s own Tris Munsick headlines fair’s marquee concert BY CJ BAKER Tribune staff writer
A
s mainstream country music continues to drift further toward pop, Tris Munsick and the Innocents continue to buck the trend. As Munsick sees it, the industry has moved away from a lot of the values, traditions and the sound that has resonated with so many of its listeners. Pop may command a broader audience, Munsick concedes, but “I think there’s a lot of folks out there who really want to hear real instruments, and want to hear bands up there and people make mistakes, and … put the humanity back in that music.” He and his bandmates will bring that kind of performance to the Park County Fair’s grandstands Thursday night, playing country music that’s geared toward Western audiences. “That’s the kind of life that we live and that we understand,” Munsick said, “so that’s what we sing about.” Fairs and rodeos, “that’s our kind of crowd, for sure,” he said. While the band plays across the Rocky Mountain region, Powell is pretty close to home: Munsick grew up on the eastern

slope of the Bighorn Mountains, on a cow/calf ranch south of Sheridan. His country roots can be traced back to his father Dave, a fiddler, singer, songwriter and rancher who instilled a love of music in all three of his boys. “We grew up just kind of doing it as a family,” Munsick said. “When we were kids, we’d play around the fire or play at brandings, or just in the living room, and that kind of grew into us.” The four family members have spent years performing together as The Munsick Boys and on their own. “It was pretty amazing, really — all three of us [siblings] really took to it,” Munsick said. They’ve each “taken different paths in music,” he said, “but kind of the same general direction.” Munsick’s own band brings a blend of traditional country and what he calls “kind of a red dirt, more rocked-out vibe.” Cathy Holman — better known as Prairie Wife on My Country 95.5 of Casper — has described their music as “that awesome kind of old school, a little bit of outlaw country.” Tris Munsick and the

udiences will see triple on the Park County Fair’s Pepsi free stage thanks to performances by the Cowley Boys, The Rewinders and Bret Savage. THE COWLEY BOYS The Cowley Boys have been together for 26 years, Savage said, and their current guitarist, teenager Kasen Banks, is the
son of Dave Banks who plays the rhythm guitar. The Cowley Boys’ lineup consists of Schuyler Hinckley on drums, Dave on rhythm guitar, Kasen on lead guitar and Savage on bass guitar. “We can play for four hours and leave a lot of stuff on the table,” Savage said. Their music is an edgier offering, “a mix of country and classic rock,” compared to the Rewinders who play “oldies.”

LOCAL YOUTH WILL PERFORM AT PEPSI FREE STAGE
t 14 years old, Park County local Jillian Nordberg has been performing for over half her life. The teenage musician began performing at age 6 when she played at a teacher conference, and from there she began playing recitals. At 11 she taught herself to play guitar and now she regularly performs at Cassie’s. Her most recent accomplishment was singing the national anthem July 2 at the Cody Stampede Rodeo. “It was kind of crazy for me, just something I've always wanted to do and got the chance to and had a great time doing it,” Nordberg said. At her young age Nordberg has an understanding of music and what it means to put on a performance. It’s her first time at the Park County Fair but her concerts will not be background music, she said. The music she plays will be louder and upbeat. A lot of the songs Nordberg will play are covers of older music — she rattled off names like Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn and Guns and Roses, as well as Zach Bryan and Carrie Underwood. When it comes to her choice in classic music it boils down to the storylines in the songs and the message that the artist is trying to convey. “When you listen, there's just really good messages, I feel like in the older music, if you listen to it, it just has really good storylines and the way it sounds is just great,” Nordberg said. “So I just appreciate that kind of music.” Nordberg writes her own music as well and an album is currently in the works.

W
hen Justin Baxter starts his opening set at the Park County Fair on Thursday night, the experience will be a bit different from his other gigs. “It had always been a dream of mine to play on that stage,” said Baxter, who grew up in Powell. Baxter said fairgoers can expect “a nod to the ‘90s country that we all grew up on,” with his three bandmates and himself delivering a mix of original songs and covers. “It’s a high-energy country show like nobody’s ever seen before,” he said. “We like to keep things light, we like to joke around and have a good time, but then we get after it …” “We don’t really have any slow songs,” Baxter added. “We usually like to bring it when we come.” The current Casper resident has spent the past few years building up to events like Thursday’s grandstand performance, where he’ll open for Tris Munsick and the Innocents. “The only reason that I’ve been able to get to where I am in any of this is because God gave me a gift,” Baxter said. Baxter’s vocals (and occasional rhythm guitar) are backed by three bandmates from Casper: Robert Brackel on the electric guitar, Ryan Bell on
drums and Scott Harris on bass. “I feel like I have the best band in the entire state,” Baxter said, “and I’d put these guys up against anybody.” They’ll be making the most of their time in Park County, with plans to shoot a music video in support of an album that’s being released in September. Baxter won’t be gone long, either. He’s due back at Washington Park
Aug. 2 for the K-Bar Saloon’s concert series. Next summer’s schedule is already filling up, too. “We’ve just been hitting the phones a lot, trying to get everything booked,” Baxter said. “[We’re] gonna make a run at this thing.” Thursday’s concert begins at 7 p.m., with the gate open at 6 p.m.

Drivers must pay a $100 entry fee that will cover the driver in addition to two pit crew members, and drivers can buy two more pit passes for $15 each. U
pstage Dance Academy will be returning to the Park County Fair for its third consecutive year. This year, like last year, Upstage Dance Academy will be showing off 75 dancers on the Pepsi free stage who have registered for their summer season. The dancers will also once again have a presence walking and riding down Bent Street in the Park County Fair Parade at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Upstage Dance Academy teaches ballet, tap, jazz, modern, hip-hop and acrobatic dance. Audiences can expect that each day will be a different set of dances with both new routines and routines from their previous recitals. “Myself and my sister Katelyn went to Casper College together and majored in dance and we really just wanted a fun environment in Powell, where we grew up, for kids to dance,” co-owner Mariah Lang said ahead of last year’s fair. Lang was encouraged going into last year’s performances on the Pepsi free stage because it gave kids a chance to perform in front of the community and offerws a more relaxed performance environment. The academy will perform three out of the

ver the past two decades Absaroka Mountain Thunder’s clogging performances have become a mainstay at the Park County Fair’s Pepsi free stage and during the fair’s annual parade. The dance company will be entering its 23rd year of performances at the fair with 38 dancers. F
or the second time Cecil Lewis will be creating some magical memories but never sharing his secrets at the Park County Fair’s Pepsi free stage throughout fair week. Lewis, who is currently a headliner for American Cruise Lines and played 15 venues in June alone, enjoys performing at fairs where the audience is close and performers sometimes know one another — he calls it “fair family.” This outlook makes sense for Lewis who said his performances are about what ‘It’s not about the the audience enjoys and what they tricks, it’s about want to see. According to Lewis’ website he has performed in the northwestern region for the past 30 years and worked with organizations that include Burger King, Children’s Miracle Network, Crossroads Dance Club, CSK Auto INC, Eagles, Elks and many others. ared Sherlock will be bringing “Mind Games” to the Park County Fair’s Pepsi free stage this year. The hypnotism show carried out by Sherlock puts the audience into “daydreams and challenges,” the show’s webpage says. Sherlock is an experienced performer who is a certified hypnotherapist and member in good standing of the National Guild of Hypnotists. He is also a classically trained illusionist, a juggler and an emcee; he performs over 100 events nationwide and has performed internationally in China and in its cities Shanghai and Hong Kong. In 2014 Sherlock was voted the Minneapolis Indie Performing Artist of the Year. Audiences can catch “Mind Games” at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Tuesday; 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Wednesday; 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursday; 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday as well as 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday.

This is an alternative to the more competitive limited weld class, derby organizer Don Adams said. These are often “old iron” cars built in the 50s and 60s that have had a lot of money invested under the hood over the years. Adams rattled off items including $10,000-$12,000 engines and $3,000 transmissions. For only a few hundred dollars a young or inexperienced driver can build a chain-up car. If it runs and drives it can be a chain-up car and they can reasonably be purchased for $200-$300, Adams said. Really, drivers don’t even have to use chains if they don’t want to. Using wire, specifically number nine, has also been known to work, Adams said. He added that the event has always had a good number of cars registered in the years that the chain-up class has been offered. This year the derby expects 10-12 chain up cars in the running but cars can be registered the day of the event. The women’s compact division will also return to the demolition derby for its third year. This class is specifically for the ladies who want to get involved in the derby. Adams’ own granddaughters, Jordan Gibson and Kalina Vaughn, have competed against each other in some friendly cousin rivalry for the last two years. Adams encouraged this year’s Figure 8 racers to consider letting the women in their lives behind the wheel of the car following the Figure 8 race. The derby will also be operated under Big Horn Basin Unified (BHBU) rules, which allows racers to have the peace of mind that they can race different derbies without having to build a new car each race. The rules began roughly five years ago, Adams said, and they are currently used in all Big Horn Basin derbies. Derby tickets can be purchased at the box office or online at parkcountyeventsandfair.com/park-county-fair/ park-county-fair-tickets. Tickets are $20 for grandstand seats and $25 for box seats.

PARK COUNTY TALENT TO PLAY PEPSI FREE STAGE

P
ark County local Jess Klemm, a multi-instrumental musician, has been playing music ever since she can remember — at 6 years old she was playing the piano, eventually she learned fiddle, guitar and mandolin among others. Klemm started performing in 2016 with a partner but didn’t feel quite confident enough to perform solo. In 2019, when her partner was unable to sing with her at a performance due to an accident, she joked that she “conned” her brother Levi into performing with her. Now Jess is listed as a solo performer during the Park County Fair, but her brother will still accompany her on a few performances.
Jess will be performing two of her Pepsi free stage time slots solo while her brother Levi will be joining her in others. Together they make the duo “Pretty Punchy.” The siblings grew up playing music together, she said. They were both in band and choir in school and both were members of the Northwest College Jazz Choir. When they perform together, Jess said they harmonize off each other and “do a lot of song swapping.” From both Jess and Pretty Punchy, audiences can expect “mostly country.” There will be some originals, red dirt and Texas country. Audiences can catch Jess at the Park County Fair on Tuesday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., Wednesday at 3 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

midst all of the fair food, grandstand events, carnival rides and livestock shows, it’s important to stay safe as temperatures will be in the mid to low 90s throughout the week. Fair offers a lot of fun n during the day but being outsidee in high temperatures for long perieriods of time means people ple run the risk of a heat-related illness if they aren’t careful. According to the CDC, heat-related illnesses can include heatstroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, ps, sunburn and heat rash. Heatrelated illnesses like heat exhaustion and heatstroke ke can occur as the result off the body being unable to properly cool itself. “In these cases, a person’s body temperature rises faster than it can cool itself down,” reads the CDC page ‘About ut Extreme Heat.’ “This can cause damage to the brain ain and other vital organs.” Young children, older adults, and people with mental illness and chronic diseases are most at risk, the CDC said. Other factors that can increase the risk of developing a heatrelated illness are heart disease, mental illness, poor circulation, dehydration, fever, prescription drug use, obesity, high levels of humidity, sunburn and alcohol use. Events coordinator Billy Wood could not recall the number of heat-related illnesses at Park County Fair last year but said that there was one incident he remembered, although it was unclear if the incident was a re-
sult of heat or alcohol. Wood also encouraged fairgoers to stay safe and avoid drinking and driving.

Heat stroke symptoms include a body temperature of 103 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, skin that is damp or dry, red and hot, a fast pulse, headache, nausea, confusion, loss of consciousness Symptoms of heat and more. In nonemergency cases sip water, move the individual to a cool place, loosen their clothes and cool them down with wet rags or a bath. WHAT TO DO IF I GET TOO HOT AT THE FAIR? Wood said that resources will be available during the fair for those who need to cool down. The two fair halls are air conditioned and EMS will also be present and available near the fair office. Wood said that those looking to get a drink and cool off can visit the many vendors who offer
Pepsi products and water. Pepsi is the official pop and water sponsor of the fair. Park County Public Health will be posted on Sixth Street with a “Rock and Rest Trailer,” which will be available as a “safe, clean and cool spot for families

with young babies to clean and change.” Next to Park County Public Health will be Safe Kids, which will provide informational displays about the dangers of leaving children and pets in a hot car as well as injury information.

Sale: Expecting similar prices to last year, if not slightly better Continued from Page 29 Bridges expects strong sale numbers this year, although he does expect an adjustment compared to the previous two years. “2021 was the largest sale that I had been involved with in all my years,” Bridges said. In 2021, sales totaled $645,536 and in 2022 sales totaled $618,536. Bridges doesn’t expect this year’s sales to meet those astronomical standards and instead expects earnings to be in the more typical average of $220,000-$225,000. For prices on the livestock, Bridges said they are expecting similar prices to last year if not slightly better. This year Bridges added that while unusual, the number of
steers for sale has gone up and the number of pigs for sale has gone down. He said the number of goats and lambs has stayed relatively steady with only small variations. Bridges explained that it’s unusual for steers to increase in numbers due to the amount of time and money required. Some kids have even had their steers since September of last year, he said. Pigs are typically a go-to for the sale but Bridges said there weren’t as many available to purchase. He said this could be due to a variety of factors including high temperatures during breeding season that affected conception rate and smaller litters. As far as other changes to this year’s sale, Bridges said there will not be online bidding

this year, but they will still do add-ons through the online portal. “Typically, ever since I’ve been here, we’ve always talked about … the things we’ve added, we’ve actually subtracted something this year.” Add-ons allow people to contribute money to a youth’s animal even if they are unable to purchase the whole animal. This way family and community members can still support the community's youth who are able to see who contributed with an add-on, Bridges said, and they are occasionally used by businesses who have not yet met their budget for the sale. When all is said and done purchasers will be able to take their meat to get processed with the processor of their
choice. He said Roger’s Meat has “graciously kept all their dates open in August,” for the Junior Livestock Sale. “It’s a huge, huge thing that Roger’s has done. It's kind of unheard of … kudos to Jose and his family for letting us do that,” Bridges said. Bridges said another processor that works with the sale to accommodate buyers is Idaho’s Matt’s Meats, who will receive the meat from the sales board, process it and deliver it for pick up at Fremont Motors in Cody. Bridges also thanked Andrew Mehling and Jennifer Tripplett who he said work year round to make the sale possible — putting in thousands of hours of work between them.
