Special points of interest: TGIF every Friday in the Cupp Lounge. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres from 4-6pm. Ladies Day is every Tuesday $3.00 house wine in the grille for lunch or after 2pm in the Cupp Lounge.

Patriot Golf Day Results Vanderbilt Legends Club hosted more than 25 soldiers from nearby Ft. Campbell on Patriot Golf Day for a day of golf and camaraderie to benefit the Folds of Honor Foundation. Patriot Golf Day is the flagship fundraiser for the Folds of Honor Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides postsecondary educational scholarships for the children and spouses of military men and women disabled or killed while serving our great nation. The Club, through entry fees, sponsorships, raffle tickets and personal donations raised more than $11,000 for our fighting men and women compared to $5,000 in donations last year. The membership at the Club

has shown themselves to be more generous than any other club in the Tennessee PGA Section for the last two years! The Patriot Day Tournament was won by Scott Hickman, Brandon Baisden, Andrew McDaniel and Jay Morse with a score of 58. A special thanks to the Patriot Golf Day Committee of Mike Alday, Jim Boscamp, Pete Ezell, John Harlin, Wes Brown, Buster Heneman, Scott Hickman, Bryan Kretzmeier, Pete Nofi, and Ron Pearce. The Club would not have been able to raise nearly as much money without your efforts. Thank you to all our members who participated and to those who serve our country and fight for our freedom every day.

October 2010

From the Desk of Will Brewer Our golf course conditions have greatly improved over the past few weeks! As we all know, the cool season grasses were hit hard during the summer months. Our Turf care team has re-seeded these areas and our turf is returning to excellent condition. The hard winter, the perfect April, the “Great Flood” in May and the devastating heat of the summer made it a particularly difficult year for our Turf care team. They have done an outstanding job with the challenges faced and we are confident that 2011 will be a better year for our turf.

Fall weather and course conditions make it one of the best times during the year to bring out your customers, peers and friends. With that being said, we are now six weeks into our special $55 Guest of Member rate offered on Tuesdays after 11:00 a.m. Due to the program’s great success, we have decided to continue offering it for the foreseeable future. Remember, Tuesday is your Guest Day and you may bring up to 3 guests for only $55 per player after 11:00 a.m.! Our October calendar is full of events and begins on the 8th with our Fall Color Classic, our 1-day Member Guest .

Our Golf Academy is offering a complimentary Putting Clinic on October 9th hosted by Patrick Jackson. Something we all need is a trained set of eyes to support or correct what we may or may not be doing correctly in our putting stroke. This clinic is sure to help you learn more about your putting stroke.

Congratulations to Derrick Centers for winning the Player of the Year title and a trip to Pinehurst!! The top players on the leaderboard will now compete in the Champions Cup on October 30th & 31st. This is a Ryder Cup style event that should provide quite a bit of excitement.

Thank you for your patronage through this season! I hope to see YOU at the Club soon! Will Brewer,

Vanderbilt Golf–Freshman, Charlie Ewing by Justin Emil, Assistant Men’s Golf Coach Each year a few new faces appear on the Vanderbilt men's golf team. One of those new faces belongs to Charlie "Chewy" Ewing. Chewy won't impress you with strength or size, but his club head speed is in a category of its own. He is a fierce competitor on the course, but off the course he is a southern gentleman.

During his high school career, Ewing was the team captain for the Highland Park High School golf team where he helped the team to a runner up finish in the 2009 Class 4A State Tournament. Chewy also earned medalist honors at the 2009 Austin Fall Preview Tournament.

So be on the lookout for this freshman phenom. If you want to befriend this fine young man, then just offer him some candy or ice cream. That is his only weakness! GO COMMODORES! Charlie Ewing

A Word From The Handicap Committee What is a USGA Handicap?

A Handicap Index is the number issued by your golf club which represents your potential scoring ability. It is expressed as a number taken to one decimal place; for example, 10.4. The USGA Handicap Index will travel wherever you play. Your Handicap Index isn’t your handicap; it simply leads you to your Course Handicap, which is the specific number of strokes you need to play on a specific set of tees to adjust your score back to the level of scratch.

How to Determine Your Course Handicap Find the Course Handicap Table for the set of tees that will be used during play. Usually they are posted at every golf course in the clubhouse or on the tee. There are separate tables for men and women, so please be sure to use the correct table for the tees you will play. Locate your Handicap Index on the Course Handicap Table and find the slope that you will be playing from. If your Handicap Index is 11.6 and the slope of the tees that you are playing is 130, then

by Gail Smothers your Course Handicap will be 13 and you will receive 13 strokes.

other player, play with three others, or a stroke play event. Each is different.

You can also figure out your Course Handicap by taking your Handicap Index and multiplying it by the Slope Rating of the tees you are playing, divide by 113, and round to the nearest whole number. (i.e., 11.6 X 130 = 1508/113 = 13.3 or 13)

Check the scorecard to find where you will give or receive strokes. Each hole has a handicap stroke allocation number. The hole with handicap number “1” is the hole where you are most likely to need a stroke: the hole with handicap number “18” is the hole where you are least likely to need a stroke.

How many strokes? The number of strokes you get or give depends on the type of format you are playing: whether a match against one

Turf Care from Joe Kennedy I never thought fall would get here. What a long year! The flood and the excessive heat were tough. The entire Eastern half of the United States suffered from the heat. Bent grass greens had their toughest year ever. Ultradwarf Bermuda grass is now being discussed all across the Southeastern turf region. We have made great strides in our greens recovery. The greens should return to normal as we get them aerated and the hot days subside. We have also

re-seeded all of the rough, another cool season turf. It will take a little time, but hopefully the summer of 2010 will be a distant memory before long. We have several projects for this winter. The main one is to lower areas along cart paths that are holding water. These areas normally develop with age, but the flood accelerated the process. Due to the fact that these areas are mostly Fescue, this work cannot be done until cooler weather arrived.

Golf Rule of the Month Please mark your calendar with the following Aerification Dates for our courses: North Greens: October 18th-19th South Greens: October 27th-28th

Recently in the Club Championship, a player hit a ball into some tall weeds. He then hit a provisional ball to nearly the same location. He could not find his first ball but found his 2nd ball and hit it. When he hit the 2nd ball, another ball came out as well….it was his first ball!! The 2nd ball was laying right on top of his first ball so he couldn’t see it. Since he had already declared the first ball lost, he had to play the 2nd ball. However, is there a

penalty for hitting two balls at the same time. Let’s look at a recent USGA Rule of the Day for the answer: 3-3/7 Original Ball Strikes Second Ball or Vice Versa Q: A competitor invokes Rule 3-3 and plays a second ball. Subsequently, the competitor makes a stroke at one ball and it strikes and moves the other ball. What is the ruling? A: If both balls lay on the putting green prior to the stroke,

Many have asked what is the smoke seen early in the morning near the pump station? This is mostly steam being put off by our water treatment system. Once we do the permanent install this winter the "smoke" should nearly disappear. Turf Tip: If you haven't seeded your lawn yet, it is not too late. Seed and fertilize this month. Don't wait until spring!

By Sean Trimble the competitor incurs a penalty of two strokes if the score with the striking ball ultimately becomes the competitor's score for the hole -- Rule 19-5. Otherwise, there is no penalty. So there you have it, no penalty for this player since it was not on the putting green. Just an unlucky break!!

Member Etiquette-a friendly reminder We would like to remind you about some of Vanderbilt Legends Club’s key policies: 1. It is the player’s responsibility to repair ball marks, rake bunkers after use, fill divots with sand, and keep carts 30 yards from all greens. 2. The expected pace of play for each course under normal conditions is 4 hours and that pace is all the golf staff will

require from any group. However; if there is room available in front of you, it is courteous to allow faster players to play through no matter what pace that you are playing in. Acceptable time for playing will be extended to 4 hours and 15 minutes when the carts are required to be on the path. 3. Groups that stop at the turn and do not make it to #10 tee before the next group makes

the turn will lose their position on the golf course. If this happens, the shop staff will work you back in when the course is open. 4. All carts should stay on the path on par 3’s. 5. If you are not going to use a tee time, please call the golf shop at least 24 hours in advance to cancel. There are other members who would like your unused tee times.

6. If you see an issue on the golf course, please call the golf shop at 591-1450. It is our responsibility to handle a group that is slow, off the path, or damaging the course. It will only cause more stress for you and your group if you try to handle the situation on your own.
