The State University of New York at Potsdam is one of 64 campuses of The State University of New York and one of 13 SUNY Arts and Sciences colleges. The College was founded by early settlers in 1816 as St. Lawrence Academy. It continued as Potsdam Normal School in 1867 until 1942 when the College become Potsdam State Teachers College. In 1948, Potsdam became part of SUNY, the largest university system in the United States.

CAREERS IN EDUCATION We offer three select pathways for those interested in education both in and outside of the classroom.
Achieve initial or professional teaching certification in New York State, or prepare for diverse and emerging careers in a variety of industries through our general education path.
INITIAL CERTIFICATION
Master of Science for Teachers (MST) Earn your initial New York State Teaching Certificate with NO teaching experience or academic background in education. For some programs, you can achieve this in as little as one year: •C hildhood Education (leads to certification in grades 1-6)* •A dolescence Education: English, Math, Science, Social Studies (leads to certification in subject area in grades 7-12 with 5-6 extensions for some programs)
Canadian students who complete this program and all New York State teacher certification requirements are eligible to apply to the Ontario College of Teachers for Ontario certification at the primary/junior and intermediate/senior divisions.
PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION

For those holding their initial teaching certification, we offer five distinct programs that satisfy the professional (permanent) certification requirements in as little as one year. EMERGING MARKETS FOR EDUCATORS GENERAL EDUCATION
Master of Science in Education (MSEd) Candidates not seeking NYS teaching certification, but are interested in applying educational pedagogy in a variety of non-classroom contexts, may pursue a concentration or take a handcrafted set of electives based upon student’s interests and career goals. Current concentrations offered within Curriculum & Instruction: • Early Childhood Education • Human Resource Education • Language Acquisition • Leadership in Education • Intercultural Education
In the Educational Technology Specialist program, I developed a variety of skills that schools, as well as the general workplace, are looking for today. Whether you want to achieve permanent certification and continue teaching, become a technology liaison in a school district, or break into an emerging field, as I did, you will leave this program prepared for whatever path you choose.

The Crane School of Music is the birthplace of American music education.
MUSIC EDUCATION Master of Music (MM) in Music Education
You will work with Crane’s distinguished faculty to advance your current understanding of music teaching and learning. Courses are offered in summer, online, and during the academic year. Music Education students typically complete their program in two semesters of study. A bachelor’s degree in music education or other music degree with teacher certification is required. For those persons holding New York State initial certification to teach music K–12, all degree programs are designed to fulfill the academic requirements for professional certification to teach music K–12.

The Crane School of Music also offers a combined certification/ Masters option. This program can be completed in two years plus an additional semester of student teaching. International students seeking this degree without certification may apply with a music degree other than the Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree. (This path does not lead to New York State teaching certification.)
2+2 Master of Music (MM) in Music Education
Applicants who have teaching positions and are therefore unable to attend in the fall and spring semesters may complete the degree in as few as two summers with as few as two additional online courses.

MUSIC PERFORMANCE

Master of Music (MM) in Music Performance
This program is designed to develop student musicianship and technical expertise through individual study or solo, ensemble, and chamber performance opportunities, all under the direction of faculty artists. Music Performance students at Crane can complete their program in as few as three semesters during the academic year. Majors include voice, harp and guitar, along with traditional instruments in the brass, woodwind, string and percussion families. With the abundance of performance opportunities, Crane can help further your musical performance skills. Piano performance students can also consider adding the concentration in piano pedagogy while in the performance degree. Dual Master of Music degrees in both performance and music education is also possible for qualified students.

MATHEMATICS Master of Arts (MA) in Mathematics
This program is designed to develop and enhance abilities in complex mathematical thinking by offering a spectrum of courses in pure and theoretical mathematics. Advanced knowledge in algebra, real and complex variables and topology are designed in such a way so that mathematics literature can be read with understanding and enjoyment. The successful completion of this program will prepare a student to enter the second-year of a doctoral program in mathematics, to begin a career as an industrial mathematician or as a faculty member at a junior or community college.

For educators with initial certification in mathematics, this degree will also satisfy the requirements for professional certification in New York State. Graduates are employed by companies such as Aetna, AT&T, IBM, General Electric, Kodak, the National Security Agency and Hewlett Packard. Others have received assistantships and fellowships at reputable universities, and have earned PhD degrees in mathematics or statistics. Mathematics also blends well with engineering, economics, physics, chemistry, computer science and music, among others.
ENGLISH & COMMUNICATION Master of Arts (MA) English & Communication
The MA in English and Communication is an interdisciplinary program of study for students interested in advancing their lives and careers through developing creative and effective communication skills. Courses address themes from a variety of cross-disciplinary perspectives, including literacy history and theory, rhetoric, mass communication, composition studies and linguistics. The program develops skills, which are relevant to any career.
For educators with initial certification in English, this degree will also satisfy the requirements for professional certification in New York State. Alumni have taken their skills in research, analysis and communication into professions in teaching, administration, business, and more. Some of the positions alumni hold are: director of publications, director of student and family transitions, managing director of marketing and communications, and faculty/writing center director. Other graduates have gone on to obtain their doctoral degree in literature and communication.

Every course I’ve taken through this program has been incredibly interesting and engaging. The courses are challenging in such a way that it pushes one to write more articulately, think more in depth, and make more intricate connections while writing and discussing topics in class. The professors are well read, articulate, passionate about what they teach, easy to reach, and incredibly helpful. All of this has made it easier to grow as a writer and a thinker.

ORGANIZATIONAL PERFORMANCE & LEADERSHIP Master of Science (MS) in Organizational Performance & Technology (OPT) The OPT program prepares students for careers in organizational performance improvement and development. An emphasis on technologies to solve performance problems. This program is well suited for individuals seeking careers in leadership or management positions that span across multiple industries and organizations. Areas of study include organizational development, leadership, evaluation and assessment, and technology to name a few. Several electives and a culminating project round out the curriculum to allow individualized study while gaining practical experiences. Alumni of the program have gone on to work as human performance coordinators, employment counselors, director of student life & facilities, director of public relations, vice president of libraries & information technology, army career and alumni counselor, client care analyst, project manager, and many more. PUBLIC HEALTH Master of Science (MS) in Community Health
The Master of Science in Community Health prepares individuals to address critical issues of diverse populations. The curriculum fosters development of core public health competencies, training students to plan, implement, and evaluate both urban and rural health initiatives. This program, by design, is highly experiential. Over 25% of the program includes professional projects and internships, designed to provide practical experiences (both simulated and actual) so that graduates are equipped and prepared to make significant contributions in the field immediately after graduation.
Health Educators are among the fastest growing occupations. Job Growth is estimated to be a 21% growth from 20122020. - NYS Department of Labor Alumni of the program work in numerous careers including a nutrition educator, fitness director, health educator, drug education specialist, outreach educator, project manager, and NYS Department of Public Health among other careers.
