To My Twin Joe Garrity First there was we, Then there was you, Then there was I It’s a matter of division: I am the remainder. Mom said she knew she would have us before the doctors did, like a dream, a prayer. Mom said she blended two raw eggs every day of the pregnancy. Mom said she couldn’t drive anymore, her belly hit the steering wheel. Mom said she was more worried if one of us lost the other than her. The doctors said we were the biggest in the hospital’s history. I want the same as anyone else: To love and be loved Garrity 1 I don’t want freedom I need freedom I didn’t know what a twin was I only knew you I only knew me through you how apart I didn’t see the resemblance, in appearance, in our voices, handwriting, secrets, all the things that make a person some-one. I am conflicted with one. One and one are one. Two is a construction, not even the eyes can see it. I’m wandering deeper into my wilderness of one, this place you haunt with no name or face. I want to let you go to your wilderness too, you have gone anyway, and I cannot haunt it nameless or faceless if I tried, perhaps I do anyway.
