Crime Watch/// From thriller to comedy and classic to contemporary, Crime Watch offers a diverse and provocative glimpse into the cinematic criminal world. Curated by Laura O’Connor.

Rope USA 1948, 80 min, Digital, Dir: Alfred Hitchcock 8 @ 7pm

Adapted from Patrick Hamilton’s 1929 play of the same name, Rope is believed to be inspired by the infamous Leopold and Loeb murder case. Under the guise of an intellectual exercise Brandon Shaw (John Dall) and Phillip Morgan (Farley Granger) murder their former classmate David Kentley, hide his body in an antique trunk in their living room and host a dinner party. Their unwitting guests include David’s father, his fiancée Janet, former best friend Kenneth and their old schoolteacher Rupert Cadell (Jimmy Stewart) from whom they mistakenly took their ideas. Filmed continuously in 10 minute long sequences and edited to look like one take, Rope is considered Hitchcock’s most experimental film. Starting with a scream and ending with a gunshot, Crime Watch invites you along to Brandon and Phillip’s dinner party.

Waste Land Brazil/ UK 2010, 99 min, Digital, Dir: Lucy Walker 11 @ 7PM

Be a part of Latitude 53’s first film night at Metro as they showcase the film, Waste Land, which shows us how artists find ideas and concepts for their work from the most unlikely sources and demonstrates the power of art to spark curiosity and cultural awareness in even the most underprivileged people. The documentary follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world’s largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of “catadores” - self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. The collaboration that follows with these inspiring characters as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives. It’s November 30, 1962. George Falconer (Colin Firth), an English professor at a Los Angeles area college, has decided to get his affairs in order and commit suicide that evening. George has been finding it difficult to cope with life since Jim, his partner of sixteen years, died in a car accident eight months ago, a tragedy complicated by the deception of Jim’s bigoted family. As he routinely and fastidiously prepares for the end and reminisces about his life with Jim, George encounters people who see his sadness and affect his thoughts about his actions. Free Admission. A Northern Portrait Canada 2012, 28 min, Film Projection Performance, Dir: Lindsay McIntyre 13 @ 8PM

A personal meditation on the Arctic in the form of a live performance on nine looping 16mm projectors. Images are built and layered with high-contrast mattes and colour textures on four projectors on a single screen, creating one changing image. The optical audio tracks are looped in tandem with the imagery and mixed live on five additional 16mm projectors.

The Harder They Come Jamaica 1972, 120 min, Digital, Dir: Perry Henzell 40th Anniversary Screening! 13 @ 11PM, 15 @ 9PM

The age-old story of country boy, urban corruption - and a bad end. The guy is Jimmy Cliff, the city is Kingston, the bad business is the reggae industry - and the crime is killing a cop who’s in on the ‘ganja’ trade. The film’s tone is righteously angry, but it doesn’t go for the easy targets: it views Cliff’s image of himself as a hero as ironically as it denounces police violence and missionary-style religion. Along the way, it offers a richly textured picture of Jamaican shanty-town life, composed with a terrific eye for detail. The action is as gutsy as the well-integrated score, which makes the movie’s Hollywood-style gloss a little anomalous, but the basic humour and toughness emerge unscathed. (Time Out)
