Š Post Road Vintage 2012

Happy Winter and Merry Christmas to you! What a magical time of year. But a busy time too! There are cookies to bake, gifts to wrap, parties to attend, shopping to do...... and the list goes on and on. I often get asked, “How do you do it all?” And I answer the same every single time, “um, I don’t”. The house flies. I stay home a lot more then I used to. There are corners that get cut for sure. But I make time and space for the things I LOVE. I cut out a lot of the rest. Now, I’m not suggesting you shirk your duties or anything but I am suggesting that you do a little more of something you love every single day! And that holds true for the Holiday Season too! You will have more energy and spring in your step to accomplish those few things that aren’t your favorites. You will start noticing and appreciating the little things. It is hard to not feel alive and excited when you are doing the things you love! This year give those that you love most the best gift of all. A happy you. And thank you once again for allowing me this great honor of inspiring you.

love, Hea"er Anderson

Karl and Maria Marcusse’s home shines with a zest and love for cozy vintage decor. Winter time is no exception. The family farmhouse in Northern Michigan gets decked out in nature’s finery! Look no farther then the swamp out back for fresh greenery and red Christmas berries. With so much natural beauty there is not a great need for much else. Maria fills in the few empty spaces with antiques and personal touches that add to (and not clutter) the mood. Shiny-brite ornaments are her favorite. Both Karl and Maria’s family’s gifted them a bunch of ornaments from their childhood for their wedding. (Not knowing that the other had done the same!) Imagine how lucky! A tree full of vintage and sentimental ornaments for that very first Christmas together! 7

CHRISTMAS

To obtain a similar look Maria suggests starting with what you have. If you don’t have access to fresh greenery then visit your local craft store for life-like boughs of evergreen and berries. Also, don’t forget to save the trimmings from your tree! These can be plopped in a pitcher or an old pail for farmhouse charm. Also, vintage ornaments can often be found at yard sales and thrift shops through out the year. Most of all, have fun! Turn up that Christmas music as you decorate. Brew your favorite cup of tea or coffee as you cozy up your home. And take time to enjoy the results! 9

Heather Kowalski shares how she created this beautiful wall of photos! First she gathered up her pictures and a mixture of frames. Some vintage, some new, and some painted by her. She found that smaller sized frames were easier to work with. Next she traced and cut out the shape of each frame so that she could experiment with how to arrange them. I love how the frames are each different and yet compliment each other beautifully! Hang each frame up and enjoy!

Even more important then the beautiful display, are these women and their stories. They are all from Heather’s family. They are reminders of strength to her. Each are a testimony that life doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful. And that sorrow and joy can go hand in hand to make up this perfectly imperfect thing called life.

SWEET

PHOTOS AND STYLING BY SONIA CROUSE FROM CREATINGVINTAGECHARM.COM TEXT BY HEATHER ANDERSON 18

H O M E

Sonia Crouse grew up on the island of Malta. It is a tropical island and it never snows there. Images of snow covered, slanted roof top cottages are something she only saw on Christmas cards. She grew up dreaming of living in such charming cottages, never knowing that fate would bring her to a home just like the ones on those Christmas cards. Sonia and her family now reside in this stone home in North Carolina. The home was built in the 40’s with local Mount Airy Quarry granite. Even though she misses her family she finds great joy in decorating her little cottage, just as she’s dreamt from girlhood. 19

The living room and mantle are the heart of the Crouse home. Gifts are wrapped with fabric-copied paper and natural elements and used for decoration. Sonia also made the stockings from grain sacks. She adds personality by decorating with memories from Malta. Sonia attached family photos to an old window frame with twine. A picture of her grandfather with his goat, selling fresh milk reminds her of home! Sonia’s home is proof that decorating, remembering, and honoring those you love go hand in hand! 21

soft ginger cookies

with white chocolate frosting by Lore*a Ellenson AFinnInTheKitchen.com

26

1 teaspoon ground ginger 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon cardamom 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon cloves 1/4 teaspoon sea salt

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Place 4 tablespoons sugar in a small bowl. Roll the refrigerated dough into tablespoon sized balls with your hands and roll to coat in the sugar.

1 teaspoon baking soda 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 3/4 cups sugar 3/4 cups butter, room temperature 1 large egg 1 tablespoon water 1/4 cup blackstrap molasses 4 tablespoons sugar 7 ounces white chocolate 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon In a medium bowl, whisk together the ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, cloves, salt, baking soda, and flour. In a stand mixer bowl fitted with the paddle attachment, cream together the 3/4 cup sugar and softened butter until light and fluffy. Add the egg and stir to combine thoroughly. Mix in the water and molasses until the mixture is uniform. Refrigerate for 1 hour.

Place on an ungreased cookie sheet about 2 inches apart. Flatten slightly with palm. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until cookies are thinned, small cracks appear in the middle and edges look firm. Cool on pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to finish cooling. Once cookies have completely cooled, you can start the frosting: Using a microwave-proof bowl, you can melt the white chocolate by microwaving in 10 second intervals and stirring between each until smooth. If using a double boiler, bring a small amount of water to a boil over high heat and set a metal bowl containing the chocolate over the water. Stir until melted and smooth. Add the cinnamon and stir until incorporated. Line two cookie sheets with parchment or wax paper. Dip each cookie in the melted chocolate to cover about half and set on the parchment to harden. You may speed up this process by placing the pans in the refrigerator or freezer for 30 minutes. 27

Tenderflake® Pastry 5 ½ cups all-purpose flour 2 tsp salt 1 lb Tenderflake® lard 1 tbsp vinegar 1 egg, lightly beaten cold water

Mix together flour and salt. Cut in Tenderflake® lard with pastry blender. In a one cup measure, combine vinegar and egg. Add cold water to make 1 cup. Deep Dish Apple Pie 6-8 medium cooking apples (MacIntosh, Spy or Cortland) more if you want a higher pie 3/4 cup brown sugar 3/4 tsp cinnamon 3/4 tsp nutmeg 3 tbsp corn starch 1 tbsp lemon juice 1-2 tbsp butter

I’d be smart if I could tell you that selling soap was part of a big calculated business decision.

soaps!!!!!

oh, no! Not at all! But making soap has found me. No reason to veer away from a new passion just because there’s another new baby in the house or because I already am clearly short on hours in the day! It is fairly recent that our family has switched to more natural health and cleaning products. Um, where were you all of my life? Goodbye dry, itchy, and sometimes bleeding hands! Hello moisturized, clean, and soft as my baby’s bottom hands and body! I am so excited to be offering this in my shop. But because I want to keep the quality and natural beauty of the soap very high I will be offering it in limited amounts. Or at least for now. Unless I sell a bunch of you to come and stir up soap for me in my Post Road Kitchen! :) Shop Post Road Vintage Soap www.Shop.PostRoadVintage.com

HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN

PHOTOS AND TEXT BY HEATHER ANDERSON STYLING BY RETREAT DESIGN 32

Where do you go for your gift buying and decorating inspiration? For me, it is Re-Treat Design in Houghton, MI. Tucked away in the Keweenaw Peninsula lies this little gem of a shop. Filled to the brim with local antiques, vintage decor, furniture, and local artisan wares. It is so much better then a big box store in every way! This shop is special because it is only open occasionally. Usually the first weekend of every month. It looks completely different with every visit! I like to browse slowly, slowly. With coffee in hand. Taking it all in and chatting with those who love ‘junk’ as much as I do.

spotted! PRV soap dispensers!

Re-Treat design opened in 2010 by Christine Young and Lori Hauswirth. The area is known for it’s rich history, beautiful scenic views, and close knit communities. What was once a turn of the century copper mining boom town is now a small town supported by a University and many small business like Re-Treat. There is much treasures and talent to be found local but Christine and Lori do not hesitate to travel the Midwest if necessary to find additional treasures for their stunning shop! They feel so lucky to have the honor of junk hunting, being creative, and making new friends with their customers!
