WEATHER: CLEAR WITH CLOUDY PERIODS; 23C

In my practice, I regularly have children of both sexes and of various ages who come to me and complain about muscular spasm in the neck and shoulders, pain in the neck and shoulders and frequent headaches. This is all because of heavy schoolbags. As children, they have to walk a great distance, climb stairs, move around the campus with a load on their shoulders and this can be a cause of concern. The schools must either structure their timetable in a way that lesser books are carried or provide storage facilities in the school.

Carry that weight: What’s in a bag? n Seven periods, average 3 books each.

The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has begun to revise the curriculum for schools, and one of the suggestions is to reduce the weight of schoolbags. Education minister S Sailajanath expressed his anguish at the weight of schoolbags

n Stationary and pencil boxes. n In case of subjects such as geography and math, the students need to carry an atlas as well as additional books for reference. n Schools are now encouraging students to carry dictionaries as well. n Class X students carry printed materials such as mock test books and all-in-ones. n chocolates, candies n Lunch box, water bottle

n In an unusual catch, customs officials of Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad, detained a man with 10,000 SIM cards this morning. n The SIMs are worth about `30 lakh, an official told Postnoon. n He is a frequent flier, document says; averaging 10 journeys a month. n He was on a Dubai-Mumbai flight but got off at Hyderabad. Customs officials are interrogating him for the reasons of his stopover. n Customs officials are checking the call list on his mobile and his laptop for information.

Average bag weighs 14 kgs The primary education minister S Sailajanath has expressed anguish at the weight of schoolbags saying it is inhuman that an 8-year-old carries a 14 kg bag. Postnoon reporter Osama Salman did a reality check to know the exact weight an average school student is called upon to bear every day. Here is the result Having them to carry so many books every day is both physically and mentally taxing. There should be a locker system to reduce their burden. Ayesha Rubina, principal, Genesis High School

The weight of our bags can get a little heavy at times. With so many books, it is understood that it is going to be heavy and we as students are prepared Nabila Rahman, Class IX, Kalpa School

If kids do not carry books, how will they learn? In my opinion they carry only minimal. However, much the load might be. It’s a small compromise for education.

Class VIII: 12 kgs, Class IX and X: 14 kgs Jai Sarkari School: By comparison the weight of school bags for the same classes in government schools is lesser than in private schools. The reasons included lower affordability of students in government schools and lesser number of subjects taught, educationists said.

Rev Fr K Marreddy, principal, St Alphonsus

Although my school does have a facility to store books, we have to take books home ourselves and carry them back as we practice and study at home as well.

The weights of schoolbags in government schools are: Class VIII: 10 kgs, Class IX and X: 11-12 kgs There is an average 20 books for higher classes- three for each subjects. The books include a textbook, a notebook and a homework book. In subjects such as science and mathematics, the books can be more than just three including a workbook/ practice book. Thank God, it’s Saturday: The weight of school bags is lesser by half on Saturdays as most of the schools work for just half a day.

‘OMC favours were for the poor’ Sabitha Indra Reddy says the file ‘captive mining’ file was changed to ‘mining’ without her approval U Srinivas srinivas.u@postnoon.com

HYDERABAD: When all fingers are pointing at her, a poignant Sabita Indra Reddy, the first-ever woman Home Minister in the State, stoutly defends her action in appending signatures on the government orders according clearances for the Gali Janardhana Reddy-led Obulapuram Mining Company’. Consequent upon the arrest of IAS officer Srilakshmi Yerra, the then Secretary for Mines, attention shifted to Sabita who was the Minister for Mines and Geology. Even as media reports began nailing her with speculative reports, Sabitha Indra Reddy, for the first time, asserted that her action was for the benefit of the poor and the State. She told Postnoon that she had done so for the welfare of the people and for creating em-

In a choked voice, the Home Minister said that she did not even know the GO number and also the date on which it was issued. She only remembers that the GO was issued and the elections had followed. The file was built in the name of "captive mining" and later the term, captive, went missing, she said. “I have done all that with a good intention

that a big industry was coming and every one was bullish about that,” she said. “As a minister, I never pressurised any official so far. You know my nature. I have taken up this portfolio since then chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy encourage me. Otherwise, I actually was not interested in all this. “I am not a selfish person, nor do I require any of these positions,” she observed. She claimed that the GO was also not circulated to her. “If it was circulated, I would have had some Idea.” Asked about the speculation that she could be arrested, she said: “Let us see. I have not done anything with any bad intentions. I will face the situation. I know I have not done anything wrong to the best of my conscience. “We have allocated 25 hectares to Andhra Pradesh Mineral Development Corpo-

EXCLUSIVE ration (APMDC) also so that we will have the Government stake in it. That was the intention. While 62 hectares was given to the company for captive mining, surprisingly the term, "Captive", is missing, I was

informed. The officials should have done a thorough check and brought it to my notice, if there was anything wrong. After discussions in the Assembly, I talked to the officials concerned on this several times and sought their clarification. But they said it was alright and that it could be tackled in the court.” When asked if she would blame the embattled IAS officer Srilakshmi, she said: “No. Why should I blame her? I have to check it again. I don’t even remember the date. The file was built actually for captive mining and that is all I remember. These nitty-gritties were informed to me later, to tell you frankly. I told the officials that if there was anything to rectify let us do it.” “Let us see. God is great. I don’t want to blame anyone on this. I will take it up, as I have done nothing wrong,” the Home Minister reiterated.

he world’s oldest profession is back in the news in the City again. It has it’s own perks to go with it. Though it is illegal and considered a social taboo, several youths are taking to the ‘fascinating profession’ of becoming gigolos. The male sex workers are vying with their female counterparts to knock off business. In the process, they are indulging in crimes from cheating to murder. A few days ago, locals staying near an abandoned railway quarters in Secunderabad, found the body of a woman and alerted the Gopalapuram police. Three days later, the police identified the body and during investigation found out that three gigolos living in the vicinity were responsible for her murder. Soon they were arrested. The gigolos confessed to the crime and revealed that they had killed her for ‘stealing’ their clients. Male sex workers or gigolos now outnumber their female counterparts in the twin cities. Rough estimates put the ratio of gigolos to female sex workers at 10:9. These gigolos offer special services to both men and women and here lies their ‘advantage.’ Even the city police arrest only female sex workers because identification of gigolos is very difficult. Usually, gigolos stand next to malls, theatres and other public places luring customers. The ban of female masseur services to males from July 1 by police commissioner AK Khan came as a shot in the arm for the industry. Ever since, homosexuality has been gaining steam. “I only cater to female clients. I could help you out by providing mobile numbers of my friends who offer cater to both men and women for a nominal fee,” said Reed, who claims to be a member of a gigolo group. Unlike in the past, affluent women looking to buy sex are no longer picking up gigolos in dark alleys. Hyderabad used to have at least 34 pick-up points in 2009, but the number has now dwindled to 12, which includes Road No 1, Road No 13 (where gigolos stand by the roadside wearing green Tshirts), Punjagutta and some areas in Ameerpet, said a gigolo coordinator. “I stand near a pub or stroll into a shopping mall looking at

Steamy city Gigolos outnumber female sex workers the young/married/old women who check out young men. I intentionally walk around them and finally approach them outside the place. If a deal is struck, they take us for the night. Earlier, they used to take me to a star hotel or to their homes, but these days most of them are willing to take me to their farm houses which are away from the city,” Reed recounts. Thanks to the social networking sites, striking a deal between the gigolos and their clients has become a lot easier. There are more than five communities on Orkut for ‘Gigolos in Hyderabad’ — nearly 200 users and 108 topics. There are also accounts created in Facebook and other social networking sites which are active. There are about 45 forums for Hyderabad gigolos. Same is the route for anybody interested in becoming a gigolo, though risky. Often when youngsters try to adopt the social networking way to become gigolos, they end up getting duped. And fear of backlash keeps them from

Rahul, a post-graduate wanted to become a gigolo in Hyderabad and contacted a Mumbai based co-ordinator, Rakesh after he got his number from one of the websites. The co-ordinator, after a long chat, asked him to mail his personal details. Rahul received a call from Rakesh in the evening asking for a joining fee of `6,000 after which he would be given a unique six digit number which would serve as a code. He was assured that his real name would not be

revealed at any point. Rahul deposited `4,000 in the ICICI bank account number given by Rakesh and made him a call. He asked him to keep the receipt with him and hung up. When Rahul contacted him to enquire the status he was rudely reprimanded for depositing only the partial amount. Rakesh then demanded that Rahul pay another `4,000. When Rahul contacted him again his calls went unanswered. The police are clueless about this duping as the youngsters don’t approach them fearing their parents and social stigma.

Brokers take over the RTA Osama Salman salman.o@postnoon.com

T

he bus stop in front of the Road Transport Authority (RTA) in Khairatabad intended to be used by transit passengers, has now become an adda for middlemen/brokers. These brokers sit at the bus shelter where a host of people queue up with forms waiting to be filled. The passengers, unable to find space, stand outside the shelter, thus putting themselves at risk of being run over by speeding vehicles. The brokers are a dominating lot and although they are illegal, they roam the office with an aura of authority and charge anywhere between Rs 1000 to Rs 5000 including the prescribed RTA fee to get the job done. When asked why they quote such high prices, Mohammed Moinuddin, an agent, said, “Sir, Rs 300 is what we are left with after the entire process is completed. The rest of the money is distributed to the middlemen including RTA officials and the constables guarding the premises.” Don’t the senior officials

only pay Rs 60 for a learner’s license and Rs 200 for a permanent license and RC. With the RTA straining under a tremendous load, agents thrive. The Hyderabad RTA offices receive 1,200 applications everyday. The Khairatabad office alone receives around 700 applications for licenses and 250 for RCs. There are only 200 employees catering to this demand. It invariably leads to delays and serpentine queues. The waiting period at the RTA office is also quite long, with each procedure taking a minimum of one hour to complete. Also the cut-off marks for the driving test have been increased to 16 and ever since the number of applicants failing the test has increased by 15 per cent. Fearing this failure most people approach agents. The Additional Transport commissioner, Pandu Ranga Rao however, says, “There is absolutely no way that a candidate can get a driving license without appearing for a test. What these agents or middlemen claim is bogus. It is pointless approaching these agents.”

It’s a high-stakes battle for Bellary BELLARY (KARNATAKA): The Bellary Rural assembly constituency byelection is set to decide mining barons Reddy brothers’ future in the BJP, which they claim to have built from the scratch in this iron ore-rich north Karnataka district. The Reddy brothers have fielded their associate and former minister B Sriramulu as an Independent candidate after making him resign both from the BJP and the Assembly — to which he was elected in May 2008 from this constituency. Bellary is about 300 km from Bangalore and the rural seat is reserved for the Scheduled Tribes. Over 170,000 people, including about 86,000 women, are eligible to vote in the bypoll which has become a matter of political survival for the three Reddy brothers. The brothers were a pampered lot in the BJP not long ago because of the financial clout they wielded from the billions of rupees they made from iron ore mining, most of it allegedly from

have been deployed to ensure incident-free voting in the 195 booths, of which over 100 are considered sensitive and 15 very sensitive, meaning prone to possible violence or attempts at fraudulent voting or attempts to disrupt balloting or scare voters from coming to the booths.

The battle is essentially between Sriramulu and the BJP’s nominee P Gadilingappa, a Bellary businessman, who is contesting an Assembly poll for the first time. The Congress, hoping that it will benefit from the battle between the BJP and its oncefavourite money bags, has nominated B Ramprasad, who lost to Sriramulu in the 2008 elections. The JDS, the third major political party in the State, has

bring down the DV Sadananda Gowda ministry as the Reddy brothers claim the support of around 14 of the BJP’s 119 lawmakers in the 225-member Assembly.

The most aggressive of the three brothers, Gali Janardhana Reddy, former tourism minister, is directing the battle against the BJP from his cell in Hyderabad’s Chanchalaguda Jail. He has been lodged there since September 5 in connection with illegal mining case in AP. The younger Reddy, Gali Somashekara, has been suspended from the BJP along with two Lok Sabha members and three State MLAs for openly canvassing for Sriramulu. The elder Reddy, Gali Karunakara, also a former minister, has been away from public gaze after he appeared before the CBI in Hyderabad a few days after Janardhana’s arrest. Sriramulu has announced he will float a new party after results are out. He says he is waiting for Janardhana to come out of jail to IANS finalise details.

Shahid Balwa gets bail 2G spectrum scam NEW DELHI: A special CBI court on Tuesday granted bail to Swan Telecom promoter and 2G case accused Shahid Balwa, citing the “principle of parity” a day after five co-accused were given bail by the Delhi High Court. The bail plea of RK Chandolia, ex-aide of former telecom minister A Raja, was kept pending for Wednesday. The CBI Special Judge OP Saini said Balwa is being ordered released on bail on a personal bond of Rs5 lakh with two sureties for the like amount.

“Since as many as 10 co-accused have been admitted to bail by the Supreme Court as well as by the HC, and charges against the accused Vinod Goenka (who was given bail by the apex court) and accused Shahid Balwa are almost identical, following the principle of parity I am inclined to admit him bail,” said Judge Saini. “He is accordingly admitted to bail on a personal bond in the sum of Rs5 lakh with two sureties in the like amount,” the court said. The CBI arrested the realty promoter Feb 8 and he has been lodged in Tihar IANS Jail since then.

‘Disgraceful doctor’ gets four years jail Conrad Murray lambasted by judge during dramatic trial finale

Case highlights

Judge Michael Pastor speaks at the sentence in Los Angeles yesterday AFP

LOS ANGELEs: The judge who oversaw the trial of Michael Jackson's doctor Conrad Murray finally let rip at the medic on Tuesday, branding him a greedy and dangerous liar in a dramatic finale to the long-awaited case. As he jailed the medic for a maximum four years, the usually genial judge Michael Pastor alleged that Murray recorded a heavily-drugged Jackson speaking weeks before his death as an 'insurance policy' to use against him if needed. Pastor, who won praise for his deft handling of the sixweek trial, also blasted Murray for cooperating in a TV docu-

mentary partly made during the trial, in which he said he did not feel guilty over the 2009 death. "Yipes! Talk about blaming the victim. Not only isn't there any remorse, there's umbrage and outrage on the part of Dr Murray against the decedent," he said, referring to a claim that Jackson demanded the drug which killed him. In a no-holds barred 30minute summing up on Tuesday shortly before passing sentence, Pastor notably called Murray's treatment of the King of Pop a 'medical experiment' and 'horrible medicine.' ‘The Lady’ set to enthrall France PARIS: Myanmar's democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi gets a celluloid reincarnation Wednesday when a movie version of her life by 'Fifth Element' and 'The Big Blue' director Luc Besson goes on release in France. Malaysian star Michelle Yeoh, a former 'Bond girl', plays 'The Lady' in a two-hour biopic that focuses on the private life of Suu Kyi, her British husband Michael Aris and their two sons. Suu Kyi's struggle for her country came at a high personal cost. Her husband died in 1999 in Britain, and in the final

stages of his battle with cancer the Myanmar junta denied him a visa to see his wife.

She took a leading role in the pro-democracy movement, delivering speeches to

crowds of hundreds of thousands. This is the point where Besson's film takes up her story. Yeoh, who learned Burmese to help her play the part, said she finally got to meet Suu Kyi at her crumbling lakeside mansion in Yangon, where she was under house arrest, as filming was winding down in Thailand. Suu Kyi told Besson that she was not yet ready to watch the two-hour film which covers the deaths of her father and her husband. "She told me 'I'll see it when I'm courageous enough,'" he said earlier this month.

Pak boycotts Afghan conference ISLAMABAD" Pakistan on Tuesday decided to boycott a key international conference on Afghanistan next month, widening its protest over lethal cross-border NATO strikes and exacerbating a deep crisis in US ties. It reiterated condemnation of the NATO air strike as "an assault on the sovereignty of Pakistan."

Facebook settles US privacy charges World’s Top 10 IPO Postnoon News with Agencies

HYDERABAD: Having itself evaluated at $ 100 billion, social networking giant, Facebook, has indicated that it might go for a $ 10-billion initial public offering. Mark Zuckerberg, however, did not say anything so far on this. Forbes wondered if Facebook was going for the overkill. The magazine in its website reported: “It was six months ago, in May 2011, that Facebook, growing faster than expected and in a red-hot market for tech IPOs, broke the $100 billion barrier. Since then, Facebook has missed revenue projections and the IPO bubble has lost much of its fizz thanks to Groupon, Demand Media and Zynga. Yet Facebook’s still moving ahead with its plans to go public, and it’s still targeting that magic $100 billion number as a valuation. Is Mark Zuckerberg overreaching? “ Meanwhile, Facebook has agreed to tighten its privacy policies and submit to external audits in order to settle charges that it abused users’ personal data, US authorities said Tuesday. In a deal with the Federal Trade Commission, the social networking giant promised to honor users’ privacy preferences and to stop making claims about the security of personal informa-

tion that are untrue. The deal settles two-year-old accusations that Facebook — which has some 800 million users — had allowed advertisers access to users’ personal data when users were told it was being kept private. “The proposed settlement requires Facebook to take several steps to make sure it lives up to its promises in the future,” the FTC said in a statement. That includes giving consumers “clear and prominent

notice and obtaining consumers’ express consent before their information is shared beyond the privacy settings they have established.” Facebook did not admit guilt and was not fined in the case, which arose from an investigation by privacy groups in December 2009 that it had deceived users over the protection of their personal data — such as their name, age, location, gender and friends — when

it changed its privacy settings. The settlement clears up one issue that could have clouded Facebook’s launch on the stock exchange, which might come as early as April 2012. The Wall Street Journal said preparations are under way for an initial public offering during the April-June quarter that would raise $10 billion and value the company at more than $100 billion. The FTC said Facebook had deceived users in several ways: promising it would not share personal data with advertisers and then doing so; saying that third party apps had limited access to personal data when they had full access; and making public data users specifically chose to remain private. It also must shut down all access to accounts deleted by customers in 30 days or less — an issue many users have become focused on as employers often try to access potential employees’ Facebook pages. Facebook founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said in a statement to users on the official Facebook Blog page that the company had already implemented many of the promises in the FTC settlement.”I’m the first to admit that we’ve made a bunch of mistakes. “I also understand that many people are just naturally skeptical of what it means for hundreds of millions of people to share so much personal information online, especially using any one service.”

Hyundai labour works on empty stomach CHENNAI: Even as a sizeable number of workers of the Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) roll out cars on an empty stomach pressing various demands, 32 dismissed employees are planning to go on indefinite fast outside the plant, said a workers union member Tuesday. “For the past 16 days, a majority of the workers do not eat (lunch or any food) or drink anything (tea or coffee) while at work. Wearing black badges, they finish their work and go back home,” R. Gunasekaran, vice president of Hyundai Motor India Employees Union

(HMIEU) told IANS. “Tomorrow (Wednesday) 32 of the dismissed workers will begin indefinite fast demanding their reinstatement and also recognition of the union that is truly representative of the workers,” he added. The reason for the current problem at the Indian subsidiary of the South Korean auto maker Hyundai is the reduction of workforce on the assembly line and their redeployment in other works. According to Gunasekaran, the 32 dismissed workers had planned to go on indefinite hunger strike Tuesday onwards

but had to postpone their plans by a day for want of police permission. The union got a morale booster recently with the Madras High Court ordering the HMIL to reinstate two of the dismissed workers - union president Edison Periera and another office bearer Chinnaraja. According to union members, the company is paying Periera and Chinnaraja their monthly salary while peferring an appeal against the judgement. However, the management recognised union United Union of Hyundai Employees (UUHE)

did not agree with the HMIEU’s contention on the workload. The HMIL management had taken into confidence UUHE while chalking out the redeployment. “We negotiated with the management for nearly one and half months on the redeployment,” K. Dilli Babu, president of UUHE, told IANS. “The company has shifted some portion of Santro and i20 models to different lines. Some portion of Santro has been shifted to A2 production line in the first plant and i20 production to the second plant,” he added.

Voyage so far

imi Raikkonen’s rise to Formula 1 World Champion is folklore. His dramatic entry of Formula 1 direct from Formula Renault redefined fast racing career progression. From his very first Grand Prix with Sauber, Kimi made an impression and not long into his rookie season, McLaren made a successful bid to sign Kimi on a five-year contract. But for Kimi this was not enough and he joined Ferrari, the most illustrious name in Formula 1. The 2007 season was one of the most exciting battles in history and Kimi’s fight to win the driver’s title and contribute to Ferrari’s constructors’ championship was a great achievement. The year 2008 was marred by bad luck that hampered his title defence, while 2009 was marked by a historic victory at Spa in a year when the established teams struggled due to new rule changes. 2010 marked Kimi’s most exciting challenge yet — a move to the World Rally Championship where he continues in 2011 doing what he does best — driving flat out!

Sperm bike rides around Seattle

Eye catching rides W

hen marketing ideas are merged with eco-friendly ones, some truly unique solutions are bound to emerge. One such idea is that of the Seattle Sperm Bank, where workers pick up and deliver sperm samples, on bikes that are literally shaped like sperm. The Sperm Bike, as it is called, has turned out to be quite a head-turner around the city. The size as well as the design tend to grab attention. At 120 pounds and 10 foot long, it is actually quite a big bike. A rather bulbous container placed in front of the rider is the

main cooling and storage system for the sperm being transported. The container is filled with liquid nitrogen and can fit up to 25 or 30 vials containing sperm. Transporting materials that could soon become another human life, the bike is a custom made one. The idea of this bike was first conceived and made use of at Seattle Sperm Bank’s sister company, the European Sperm Bank. Starting with the idea of delivering sperm to fertility clinics in an environmentally friendly manner, the first Sperm Bullitt was built. This was later adopted in Seattle as

the Sperm Bike. The bike is currently used to transfer sperm samples from the Seattle Sperm Lab to reproductive centers and fertility clinics. However, it also acts as an effective marketing tool, getting more men interested in the idea of much needed sperm donations. Owing to Seattle’s hilly streets and the size of the bike itself, it is equipped with a small motor, making the journey easier on the rider. Many employees of the sperm bank have admitted that the bike has received quite a bit of attention on the streets of Seattle.

MADRID: Spanish police, with the collaboration of Belgian and Dutch authorities, broke up a gang that used children and babies to smuggle cocaine into Europe by plane from South America, hiding the drug in the youngsters’ diapers. Authorities arrested 20 people - 16 in Spain, two in Belgium and two in the Netherlands - who flew from South America with shipments of between one and five kg of cocaine, police here said Monday. Police seized 11 kg of drugs during the operation. The initial investigation focused on several people living in the Spanish city of Zaragoza who were suspected of smuggling cocaine. Police were able to determine that the network had scheduled a shipment of cocaine from South America to Amsterdam’s Schiphol

Spain busts gang that hid drugs in babies’ diapers International Airport. The information was transmitted to Dutch authorities, who arrested a Spanish couple who traveled with a baby and were transporting about 1.6 kg of cocaine taped to their bodies and hidden in the child’s diapers. In late September, three of the people being investigated in Zaragoza traveled to Madrid to take delivery of a kg of cocaine. Over the next few weeks, authorities intercepted new drug shipments and made other arrests, many of them at Barajas International Airport in Madrid. In the final phase of the investigation, police arrested the two ringleaders of the organization.

onder what it is about people and chocolate rooms, but they seem to keep making them and they keep making news. This time a shopping mall in Kaliningrad, Russia celebrated its fifth anniversary by commissioning

an artist to create a room entirely of chocolate. The idea of building a chocolate room inside Kaliningrad Plaza belonged to Lithuanian ad agency Ad Hunters, who commissioned experienced sculptor Elena

Climent to carve it out of 420 kilograms of dark, milk and white chocolate. Measuring around 20 square meters, the delicious-looking room features furniture like a chocolate sofa, table and carpet, as well as chocolate cutlery, candle holders, and flowers. 40% of the room is made of dark chocolate, another 40% is milk chocolate, and the rest is white chocolate. Elena Climent declared she had a lot of fun working on the chocolate room, and while she compared the process to ice sculpting, she said chocolate is a warm, good smelling material which creates a unique atmosphere. While working on the project, Climent faced some difficulties with preserving the

original appearance of her masterpieces and did a lot of experimenting with chocolate mass and shape at temperatures between 22 – 24 degrees Celsius. On November 18, this mouthwatering living space was

broken into small pieces and handed to visitors of Kalinigrad Plaza. In the past a Lithuanian shopping mall created a similar chocolate room, and even Karl Lagerfeld succumbed to the awesomeness of the treat.

Have you heard the buzz? Bees are dying Honeybee mystery protein is a freight train for health and lifespan

A

Late last call increases violence One-hour extension on watering holes closing hours led to a 16 per cent increase in violence

A

new study published in the international journal Addiction demonstrates that even small changes in pub and bar closing hours seem to affect the number of violent incidents. The findings suggest that a one-hour extension of bar closing hours led to an increase of an average of 20 violent cases at night on weekends per 100,000 people per year. This represents an increase in violence of approximately 16 per cent. The results suggest that the effect occurs both ways. In other words, reducing trading hours by one hour leads to a decrease in violence of the same magnitude as the increase in violence seen if closing hours are increased by one hour. Lead author Professor Ingeborg Rossow said “These findings echo the results from studies from around the world that you see more violence in cities when you extend trading hours.” The study is based on data from 18 Norwegian cities that expanded or restricted their closing hours by up to two hours in the decade 2000 – 2010. Researchers examined whether these changes affect-

ed violence in the city centre on weekend nights. Violence outside the town during the same time window, which was not likely to be affected by changes in closing hours, was used as a control for other factors. In these 18 cities weekend closing hours were between one and three at night, early by comparison to many cities around the world. These findings come more than a year after the Norwegian government proposed reducing sales hours for on-premises trading to reduce violence and public nuisance. The proposal was supported by police commissioners but rejected by alcohol businesses and right wing political parties who claimed that reduced sales hours would not reduce violence. Study co-author Professor Thor Norström said “These findings hold important implications for communities around the world who are struggling to deal with the massive burden of alcoholrelated harm. If you want to reduce alcohol-related harm, restricting trading hours of licensed venues seems to be an effective measure.”

unique study describes a single bee protein that can promote bee health and solve a major economic challenge. Honeybees are the most effective pollinators of many agricultural crops and vitally important to food production. Honeybee health is a topic of considerable concern due to massive deaths of bee colonies in the USA, Europe and other parts of the world. Recently, the European Union reacted by promising more resources for honeybee research, estimating European pollination to an economic value of EUR 22 billion. “Detailed studies on the molecules that keep bees healthy are extremely important to the food industry as well as the global provision of food,” said Dr Heli Havukainen, who defended her PhD thesis at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB). Her study of honeybees is collaboration between UMB and the University of Bergen (UiB), Norway.

More protein = better health and longer life One of these molecules is a protein called vitellogenin. “Simply put, the more vitellogenin in bees, the longer they live. Vitellogenin also guides bees to do different social tasks, such care giving or foraging. It also supports the immune function and is an antioxidant that promotes stress resistance. In my research, I set out to find out how this molecule is shaped and how it behaves on a nano-scale. This provides us with more knowledge about how vitellogenin is good for honeybees,” Havukainen said.

Like a freight train Under the supervision of Professor Gro Amdam (UMB

and Arizona State University) and Associate Professor Øyvind Halskau (UiB), Havukainen discovered that vitellogenin can be described as a freight train consisting of a locomotive and a carriage. The protein carries fat as its cargo, which it picks up in the bees’ belly-fat cells — the main station. The vitellogenin “train” travels in the bee’s blood and delivers the fat cargo at different local stops or stations. I found out that, instead of starting the train journey from the fat cell main station, some vitellogenin molecules are divided in two, so the locomotive is separated from its cargo. The cargo cannot move without a locomotive and it stays in the fat cells, while the locomotive disappears. We soon realised that this is a typical behaviour for the vitellogenin molecule,” Havukainen said. Prior to this study, scientists believed vitellogenin to be one entity, like a cargo ship, unable to separate from its cargo. Therefore, Havukainen’s new discovery is a big step forward for research that aims to keep bees healthy and long lived.

What’s up with the train hitch? The separation of vitellogenin in two parts is a key to understanding how the protein works. The factor that breaks the fragile connection, or the train hitch of the protein, and lets the locomotive go. “My discovery is that vitellogenin consists of two parts. Now, I want to stop the separation process, so the locomotive and fat cargos are always together. This will help us figure out why the locomotive sometimes ditches its cargo and travels on its own, and what the consequences are for the bees. This way, we can learn how vitellogenin affects social behaviour, immunity and stress resistance, and ultimately global food production and provision,” Havukainen said. Get your HIV facts right

World’s Aids Day December 1

Ranjani Rajendra ranjani.r@postnoon.com

H

ow often have you received an email claiming an employee at a popular cola company added a drop of his HIV infected blood in the soft drink in a bid to get back at society? Or the one about the maniac that stuck an HIV infected needle in a theatre seat to spread the infection to random strangers? Or even the one about the foreigner who goes about having one night stands then leaves his partner with a note welcoming her to the world of HIV/AIDS? Whether there is any truth in them or they are merely figments of an overactive imagination remains to be established. But no matter what the logic behind the circulation of these mails it is important that you know how exactly HIV spreads. For starters, HIV does not spread through touch, sharing of a plate, living together, hugging and kissing. There needs to be an exchange of body fluids for the transmission of the virus to occur. For instance any kind of sexual act, be it oral, anal or vaginal without using a condom can facilitate the transfer of the HIV virus. “In India, 95 per cent of the population that is HIV positive would have got it through sexual contact. But it can also spread through unsafe blood transfusion, tattooing with unsterilised needles, sharing of needles while doing drugs and using unsterilised equipments in a health facility,” says Dr Lavanya Nutankalva, infectious disease consultant at Apollo Hospital. “With casual sex becoming accepted these days, people never know what they are putting themselves at risk of. Bisexuals, transgenders, homosexuals and commercial sex workers are at a much higher risk because of the way they practice sex. Also getting a master health check up at regular intervals can help because they do offer to test you for the virus

Breakthrough in malaria regime SYDNEY: Researchers have shown how the malaria parasite can survive in a type of white blood cell in the spleen — a breakthrough that could lead to new malaria drugs and vaccines. Traditionally, it was believed the parasite’s development was restricted to the liver and red blood cells. Michelle Wykes, who conducted the study, said, “Our research has discovered how white blood cells malfunction and shield the parasite from the body’s immune attack. Dendritic cells normally function like generals of an army, giving orders to the body’s immune cells to fight infection.”

Which is why we advise people to use a condom while indulging in any kind of sexual activity. Often people don’t realise that they are HIV positive and end up inadvertently spreading it to others,” says Dr Jayachandra Reddy, joint director, basic services at

WASHINGTON: A low-cost diabetes drug seems to beat the growth of breast cancer, especially by preventing a number of natural and man-made chemicals that promote it. James Trosko from Michigan State University and a team from South Korea’s Seoul National University have thrown up evidence to show that use of metformin for Type-2 diabetes reduces risk of cancers. “People with Type-2 diabetes are known to be at high risk for several diabetes-associated cancers such as breast, liver and pancreatic cancers,” said Trosko, paediatrics professor at Michigan’s College of Human Medicine. The team found that oestrogen and the chemicals caused the mammospheres to increase. However, with metformin added, the numbers and size of the mammospheres were dramatically reduced.

From mundane to luxury look

CELEB PICK

The anarkalis have been around since the time of the Moghuls and its charm has only increased over the years

ELEGANTLY TIMELESS Taniya Talukdar taniya.t@postnoon.com

W The stunners AISHWARYA RAI BACHCHAN The Bachchan bahu perhaps features in all fashion lists, good mostly, though she has been ridiculed for her sense of dressing a lot of times on the red carpet. All that can be overlooked once you see her in an anarkali. She is a woman, who has epitomised the idea of Indian beauty over the years and looks gorgeous in this attire. DEEPIKA PADUKONE With a height like that, anarkalis sure are a must have in her wardrobe. Deepika has been seen sporting the anarkali rarely but she looks really elegant in it. KATRINA KAIF Words sometimes fall short when describing this tall lady who bridged the gap between London and Mumbai. While she can pretty much carry off anything, the anarkali is something that we would like to see the lady in more often.

hen Aishwarya Rai Bachchan reemerged from the hospital, post her delivery, she was wearing a light pink Abu JaniSandeep Khosla anarkali and she looked resplendent in it. Even when Aishwarya was pregnant she was seen sporting anarkalis, it helped her hide the baby bump. Thanks to the free flowing texture of the anarkalis, it helps hide the problem areas, but that is not

the only reason that anarkalis are popular. Even the slim or well built women like to wear anarkalis because it makes you look elegant, especially if you are tall. Designer Seema Malhotra who specialises in Indian wear and has a host of well known celebrities as her clientele gives us some insights. “The fact that the anarkali doesn’t sit at the waist makes a lot of women go for it. A lot of Indian women have slim upper bodies and this dress makes them look great in it. It works for most of them because of the flow which has an empire cut,” informs Seema going on to add, “Just the right amount of kali does the trick, it shouldn’t look like you are carrying around a sack. The amount of fabric should be less and it should be lightweight or else you will tend to look bulky.” Soft materials like georgette and nets is what Seema say make up for a good anarkali. “For the upper part, use some Indian material like benarasi or brocade and kalis in soft fabric. These days they also have a new style with the kurta short in the front and long at the back. Jacket anarkalis too look smart,” shares Seema. “If you are short and not very slim, its better to avoid anarkalis as they overpower your personality. Anarkalis don’t work for people like Rani Mukherjee and Vidya Balan,”advises Seema. If you are tall and slim, anarkalis are the way to go especially if you want to be in Indian wear yet give the sari a skip. “I love the way Katrina looks in an anarkali, she can really carry it off well and even Aishwarya for that matter. They both are tall and have the figure to carry off an anarkali. It’s a fabulous garment and is dressy with a lot of drama,” says Seema.

19

The misfits RANI MUKHERJEE She has more often than not been criticised for her dressing sense but Ms Mukherjee doesn’t seem to learn from her mistakes. With not so flattering a height, we suggest Rani stays away from those anarkalis and a hiring a stylist should definitely be on her ‘to-do’ list.

VIDYA BALAN This lady surely is painting the town red with her ‘dirty picture’ but what we want to tell Ms Balan is that an Indian beauty like her should exploit the saris more. And we already like the choices of saris she has made so far. Anarkalis are not so her.

His job as the head of the administration department of KSK Energy has only enabled him to meet many more people. His responsibility is to ensure that all necessary facilities are provided to the employees enabling them to achieve the best results. Raj confesses to being a very naughty kid as a child. His childhood was spent in New Delhi and college years in Hans Raj. Raj has always been socially active. His friends and family will vouch for that. “I loved meeting new people and making friends. It was all because of an active social life I had as a kid. I believe socialising is a way to network and also a means

to get a newer and fresher perspective on different things.” he explains. He also loves to travel. “Usually I end up travelling because of work but I take occasional vacations with my family. We have been to Goa, Chail, Shimla. It's a good way to unwind and also vacations are just another way to get closer to the family,” he says. Raj prefers to unwind by going swimming and playing snooker. His work does keep him away from home for some time but he credits his wife Gunwant for holding the fort. “I am a very family oriented person. For most years, credit goes to Gunwant, my wife for keeping the flock together as most of the time I used to come home late. But if I am not travelling, I like to watch movies or just spend time with friends. I love reading books as well. Any chance I get, I like to grab a book, curl up and read. It is something I could do all weekend,” he says.

unwant and Raj recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary recently and the couple consider their marriage to be fulfilling and beautiful. “Raj and I share an understanding relationship. He is affectionate and friendly, not just with me but with everyone,” says a shiny eyed Gunwant, stating that since the day she met him, she has known his love for socialising. “It's his refreshment,” she seconds. The couple have two sons, Bandhur and Tusshar, and both are working. Bandhur who is a copywriter, tries and catches up with his Dad whenever he is in town. “Dad travels a lot because of work and is hardly in town and since I am working too, time becomes a

challenge. But, whatever chance we get, we make sure to have a couple of drinks, and just talk. It is the quality of time spent together rather than the quantity that matters,” he says and goes on to add, “I think in some ways I am like him. He loves to socialise, so do I.” Tusshar, Raj’s younger son, recently started working with Dell and idolises his father in the highest light. “I think he is just brilliant with how he manages his time. He enjoys his work and loves taking new challenges and excelling in them. It's easy to share things with him because he is so friendly and easy to talk to,” shares Tusshar, who is in awe of his father.

T

he band Adil and Vasu stands for everything but stasis. A quartet Adil, Vasundhara, Saurabh and Sava Boyadzhiev have together redefined the Blues. “We are a pair of travel loving, culture loving foodies who realised that we got along at the creative level as well. We had always dreamed of making our own music, sharing it freely and traveling extensively with it. We are extremely happy and thankful to God that we have been able to do that,” says the band’s guitarist Adil. Their music is a hybrid of Jazz Fusion, RnB, Funk, Blues, Soul and Gospel. “It is about the freedom of musical expression in any form, from subtle and moody to brazen and opinionated. It’s about freedom from the hegemony of genres and the heaviness of tags like Jazz. We are all about frank, non-elitist, non-purist, honest music. In fact, how can one be a purist in times like these and in an India like the one we have grown up in?,” remarks Vasundhara, thoughtfully. The band believes in constant change and experimentation. “Many aspects of the sound of our band keep morphing and evolving in constant representation of the energies and musical backgrounds of the people playing in the band on any particular day,” informs Adil going on to add, “With a predominantly improvised set, our music showcases every musician in his true element by providing an immense space for creative freedom. The fact that we work with artists from around India and abroad, keeps us in a constant state of learning and experimentation. So far, we have played a lot within the Blues-Funk-RnB-Jazz Fusion vein and have ventured

into other forms of music as well,” say the band members. As a part of Artistes Unlimited Vasu grew up listening to The Real Group, The New York Voices, among others while Adil grew up on pop and rock of the ‘70s and ‘80s. Like every other band in the music industry today, they were apprehensive about the kind of response that they would receive in their own country. “In the beginning, we were told that our work was “niche” and meant for what people call “mature audiences only”. But it turns out that everyone from college kids to the elderly, from corporate men and women to the artistic bohemian kind were turning up at our gigs,” he informs. The band has also performed for international audiences and has garnered an equally overwhelming response. “In the beginning we were concerned about how our music with no out-and-out “Indian sounding” elements would be accepted. However, that didn’t seem to be playing on the audience’s mind at all! They were there to hear our sound and we are glad that they liked it and called us back to perform again,” says an excited Saurabh who plays the bass. We believe, at some level, perhaps, there is something in it for everyone to take home. The band has just wrapped up recording their first album at Yash Raj Film Studios. “The album is a collection of 11 originals, each very different from the other but maintaining a common underlying Adil and Vasundhara thread. The entire album is a biography of the sounds that shaped us and the events that made us the people we are. The album is full of the stories and experiences that are not just personal but are shared and related to by many urban Indians today,” informs Vasu. Catch the band playing at Via Milano today at 8pm.

Streaming movies on YouTube is slowly catching on in India. The Telugu film industry is not far behind Bollywood in jumping on the bandwagon

F

ew months ago when Studio 18 decided to premiere Siddharth starrer Striker on YouTube along with the film’s theatrical release, no one would have imagined the result. Although the film didn’t do well at the box-office, the film got more than 2.75 million hits on YouTube which is a massive number for an Indian film. Streaming films on the Internet is slowly emerging as a game changer for Indian film-makers to capture the attention of the audience. The Telugu film industry isn’t far behind. Major studios like Suresh Productions Pvt Ltd and Geetha Arts have realised the potential of streaming films officially as the best option to protect their content and some other websites like Indiaglitz.com, Teluguone. com, Rajshri.com and few others are streaming regional films on their websites to generate substantial revenue. One of the first websites to capitalise movie content on the Internet was Teluguone.com which holds the Internet rights of over 1,500 films. “We were the only source of Telugu movie content for NRIs for a very long period of time. Over the past 13 years, we have been acquiring Internet copyrights and fighting piracy has been one of

our biggest challenges,” says Ravishankar, MD of Teluguone.com. He reveals that the Internet rights for the latest films could be anywhere above Rs1-2 lakh. “A lot of producers in the industry have no idea about generating additional revenue through the Internet. All they care about is the satellite and DVD market and most of the producers end up selling complete rights except for theatrical rights to one player. With more and more people spending considerable amount of time on the Internet due to growth in broadband services, it’s high time Telugu film producers think about capitalising on this trend,” he says. Recently, another popular website Indiaglitz.com began streaming Telugu and Tamil movies for free on their website. “We procure the content from producers on a royalty basis and they get a share of the revenue we generate through ads, while streaming films,” says Naidu, of Indiaglitz.com, adding, “not only full length films, we upload small clips of films, video songs and comedy scenes which are quite popular with the audience.” Although the users are not charged to watch these films, there’s a catch. “Since we post high definition videos, the users must have a minimum speed of 512 kbps for continuous streaming and sometimes the producers restrict the availability of films in particu-

lar regions. For example, we are not allowed to stream films like Teen Maar, Rangam and Seema Tapakai in India because the Internet rights of these films were sold to some other firms,” Naidu says. Suresh Productions’ YouTube channel offers 40 full length films which were produced by them and some of the films like Bendu Appa Rao RMP and Baladoor have more than 1.5 lakh hits. “We saw that several other websites were uploading our content and generating money out of it. That’s when we decided to set up our own channel on YouTube and it partly works as one of our initiatives to control piracy. We are planning to increase the list of films to 120-130 over the next few months,” says Venkat, of Suresh Productions Pvt Ltd. Another production house, Geetha Arts is not far behind. “This trend of streaming movies on the Internet was inevitable because of growth in number of Internet users all over the world. As a revenue stream, this model of generating money through streaming films is yet to evolve. Currently, it comes into picture only after the film completes its theatrical run, satellite and DVD market. But the good thing is that these video sharing websites like YouTube, Hulu, Netflix and Amazon have given us a platform to monetise our content,” says Lakshmi Narayana, COO,Geetha Arts (Digital).

About stars, actors, and a bit of fun

A

fter playing lead roles in scores of Telugu films, Jagapathi Babu is all set to play an important role in an upcoming Tamil film titled Thandavam. Vikram and Anushka are playing lead roles in this film and AL Vijay, of Nanna fame, is directing the film. Jagapathi Babu is going to play the second lead in this film which is going to be produced by UTV Motion Pictures. This is the first major role which Jagapathi Babu has been signed for a Tamil film and it’s going to dubbed in Telugu at a later point of time. Of late, Telugu and Tamil film-makers are opting to cast actors who are well-known in at least one of the two states — Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. This strategy is turning out to be an added advantage to the film when it’s later dubbed in either Tamil or Telugu.

Tamannaah has no dates

T

amannaah has absolutely no dates till mid-2012. She’s currently acting in three Telugu Endhukante Premanta, films, Rachcha and Rebel which are expected to hit the screens in summer, 2012. There’s a strong buzz that she has been signed up by Sukumar for his next film starring Mahesh Babu in lead; however, the director and pro-

ducers of the film have stated that it’s early to comment about the cast of the film. After ruling the roost in Tamil cinema for three years, Tamannaah suddenly decided to concentrate on Telugu cinema and it has paid rich dividends for her. This year alone, she had three releases out of which 100% Love turned out to be a smash hit.

Anushka in talks for Rajini’s 3D film?

J

ust days after Soundarya Rajinikanth announced the production of Rajinikanth’s upcoming 3D film Kochadaiyaan, Anushka’s name is doing rounds as a potential lead in this film. If the buzz is to be believed, the actress is in talks with director KS Ravikumar and Soundarya Rajinikanth for the lead role opposite Rajinikanth. However, there hasn’t been any official announcement from the makers about casting Anushka in this eagerly awaited film. Currently, Anushka has three Tamil projects and two Telugu projects in hand. If she’s signed up for Kochadaiyaan, it’ll be the biggest project she has been part of till date. The film is going to be shot using performance capture technology and it’ll go on floors soon.

KAKURO

How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’ Well here are the rules of kakuro. The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers are reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells (called a run) any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In a a section of a kakuro puzzle, say you have the numbers 26 and 14 in the top row. Look at 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. If the second cell in row two contains two numbers, 30 and 11. 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
