Hyderabad, which gave a thumbs-up to crusader Anna Hazare in August for his Jan Lok Pal Bill, has responded in a rather lukewarm manner when it came to ‘jail bharo’ call. Though Anna’s supporters in the City outnumbered the rest in the State, it has not been remarkable. By noon some 300 people gathered at Dharna Chowk proclaiming support to Anna

Hema conferred with ANR Award MOVIE Postnoon News

“M

y spiritual guru says ‘Art for Divine Sake’. I am only a reflection of His glory and as long as He wants me to dance, I will,” said Hema Malini addressing an august audience at N Convention, last night. She was conferred the prestigious ANR National Award for the year 2011. Akkineni Nageswara Rao, T Subbirami Reddy, Dinesh Trivedi, Union Minister for Railways, Nagarjuna, Amala, Akkineni Venkat, Naga Susheela, Naga Chaitanya, Akhil and Sushanth were some of the guests present on the occasion. Addressing the gathering, Union Minister for Railways, Dinesh Trivedi said, “I have lost

track of the number of times I have seen Hema Malini’s Johny Mera Naam and it’s a dream come true to share stage with her.” Later,

Akkineni Nageswara Rao said, “She has enthralled people of all age groups and it’s amazing to see her continue giving dance perfor-

mances at this age. I feel like asking her what the secret of her energy is. Although she’s younger to me, I wouldn’t mind acting with

her if she doesn’t mind. I am happy that she has done quite well in politics as well and it’s my privilege to honour a great artiste like her.” Hema Malini has joined the elite list of artistes like Dev Anand, Shabana Azmi, Lata Mangeshkar, Anjali Devi, Vyjayanthi Mala and K Balachander who have been conferred with ANR award in the past. “It’s my privilege to receive this award from ANR whose contribution to cinema is immeasurable. I am what I am today because of my mother. She had a dream for me and she guided me. I feel honoured accepting this award. A flash of all those people who have been part of my life passes through my mind. I believe that it doesn’t matter what you did in the past, but the important thing is how active you are in your contribution to art,” Hema Malini said.

Police play party poopers T Sudeshna Koka

Sudeshna.k@postnoon.com

ill a few years ago the New Year parties in Hyderabad were one of the most happening in the country but in recent years the party scene has taken a nose dive in Hyderabad. There used to be few major parties like One Party, 31/12 and etc. where one would spot all the happening people of Hyderabad but now the scene has changed to a de-centralised party style. These days people are choosing farm houses, resorts, house parties and parties in other cities. There are several reasons for the changing pattern. The biggest reason being fear of vigilant cops who are on the lookout for drunken drivers and parties with loud music. “One week before the news year we find cops at every junction scanning for dunken drivers. I am sure the situation is going to get worse on New

Year’s eve. Therefore, to avoid this I am hosting a house party at my place,” says Samiksha Unayal, an advertising professional. This year the police department is a step ahead in maintaining law and order in the City on the New Year’s Eve. They

have laid down several rules and regulations like restricting the time limit on parties to 1 am and fining people making noise on the streets and vehicular traffic will be not be allowed on the flyovers and Necklace Road. “Thought it’s a little expensive I have booked a farm house

in Chilkur and I am throwing a huge new year’s party for my friends. We can celebrate and drink without the fear of police,” says Vijay Rao, business man. City police Commissioner AK Khan told Postnoon that “This is just a hype that was created because of the recent drunken driving drives. It’s a regular activity that we have been doing every year. Hyderabadis need not worry and can party without crossing their limits.” Resorts in the outskirts of the City have been booked well in advance for the year’s eve.“We have 120 rooms and all are booked.Guests are preferring to stay back rather than travelling back home during the wee hours of the morning,” says Shanthi Swaroop of Alankrita resorts. Shabash from Button Eyes adds “My farmhouse was booked in last month itself. Families are opting for smaller sized parties and farm houses are their best bet”.

To shock or not, CM spends sleepless nights The massive power hike proposed to mop up `4000 Cr has made Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy edgy as the rise will have an adverse impact on the results of the bypolls

POLITICS U Srinivas srinivas.u@postnoon.com

T

he government is in two minds over the proposed hike in power tariff in the State. There may not be any hike with immediate effect. According to sources, Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy has no heart to serve a debilitating blow to people on New Year and the forthcoming bypolls make any decision on a power hike extremely difficult. The CM is said to be against the hike in tariff for the first four categories of consumers from 50 to 300 units. While the proposals

The proposals There will be no hike up to 50 units. n From 51 to 100 units it is 2.80 and hike proposed was Rs 3 to Rs 3.20. n From 101 to 200 units the existing was Rs 3 per unit and the hike would be Rs 3.25 to Rs 3.50. n From 201 to 300 units the existing is Rs 4.75 per unit and proposed hike was Rs 5 to Rs 5.25. n From 301 to 500 units the existing tariff was Rs 6 and the hike is yet to be decided . n From 501 to 600 units and above it was Rs 6.25 per unit and the hike was to be finalised. n From 300 to 600 units the hike could be very high.

were put before the APERC the CM wants the decision to be postponed for the time being. It is learnt that Kiran Kumar Reddy said that there was no plan to hike the tariff for domestic consumers up to 300 units. He also impressed upon the officials that the government will not scrap free power supply to the agricultural sector as was being feared by farmers. But sources in discoms said that there was no other go but to hike tariffs for all consumers. The hike is to mobilise Rs 4000 crore revenue. However the Power board has already submitted a detailed report to Andhra Pradesh Electricity regulatory commission (APERC) on the ways and means to hike tariff. If there was a political will it could be implemented from April and not from January 2012. The CM on the other hand has suggested that the officials arrest pilferage and power theft across the State. It is reported that some parts of the City were earmarked by Transco where this is high. About 1.7 crore consumers are under domestic category with an usage of under 300 units. The CM wanted the domestic consumers to be spared but the officials said that there was no other go but to hike tariff to come out of the red. The main reason to defer the proposed hike are the upcoming local polls and the by polls. It is learnt that the ministers have suggested the Chief Minster to postpone the proposed hike till the elections are over. That was the reason the Kiran Kumar Reddy wanted the hike to be implemented from April 2012 instead of from January itself.

Will the sickle and hammer reunite? The long discussed merger of two communist parties has once again come up

POLITICS Postnoon News

T

he two leftist parties — CPI and CPM — will have to come together if they want to survive in the State, say communist

leaders. Though the communist unity has been elusive for the past 50 years, leaders of both parties are beginning to understand that their survival in AP was in danger if they remain divided. Hinting at the possibility of the two parties coming together in the New Year is CPM politburo member Sitaram Yechury.

“Leaders of the two Communist parties must sit together and sort out their differences before the congresses,” said a senior leader of CPI. Urging leaders of both parties to speed up the process, party leaders suggested that the party congresses could provide the platform to declare unification.

HYDERABAD’S BEST COLONIES PART II HYDERABAD: Another colony, which fulfills the parameters set up by the GHMC for the best managed residential hub is Uma Nagar Residential Welfare society . The members of the society have strived for 12 years to achieve the status. The colony which was founded in 1969 consists of a total 60 plots. Many of these plots now house big apartments besides individual houses. The residents of the colony volunteer in segregating garbage in dry and wet baskets for the GHMC sanitation staff.. The residents also participate in gardening activities which involve watering plants in park and on streets. The most important feature of this colony is that they would collect Rs. 2 per day from each residence to put it in the corpus fund. This corpus fund is used to organize community functions every month for the residents of the colony. The colony is manned by round the clock security. The main decisions related to the development of the colony are taken by a core committee consisting 29 members of the colony. This commit-

tee will take all the important decisions related to development activities. apart from this committee the colony also has garden, security, legal and executive committees to undertake various activities. According to the president of the colony, Captain Manohar Sharma, they have contributed for the construction of drainage system to GHMC as a social responsibility. He further said that they have also spent Rs. 50,000 for providing facilities in children’s park which is exclusively meant for children. The colony has recently received an award from GHMC for following best practices required for the upkeep of environment. “I am very happy that the colony has been selected as the best colony by the GHMC for its efforts to protect environment and infrastructure. It has also set up an example by discouraging illegal structures within the colony limits,” He said.

I have plans to develop other colonies in my division on a par with Uma Nagar housing society. I have prepared many development plans and am also encouraging the residents to take eco friendly measures like banning plastic.

I can proudly say that we have managed to keep ourselves from setting up commercial establishments to make money within the colony.

Jeeyar fires another salvo, TTD erupts Another cry of shouts and counter shouts are heard from the abode of the Lord of Seven Hills. This time it’s the 1000 pillar mandapam U Srinivas Srinivas.u@postnoon.com

T

he hallowed precinct of Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanam (TTD) is once again reverberated with a cry to reconstruct the famous ‘Veyi Kalla Mandapam’ (1000 Pillar Mandapam). This time too, the trigger has been activated by the revered Jeeyar Swami, who had recently made a controversial remark that the TTD had become a high-end club for the wealthy and prominent people. The 550 year old structure was demolished during the TDP regime. Later, several committees looked into the issue and suggested the then Chief Minister K. Rosaiah, to order for reconstruction of the Thousand-Pillar Mandapam.

Rosaiah had issued the orders in 2007 but the work had never begun.

H

Veyi Kalla Mandapam Some among the Agama Pundits say there is no harm in reconstructing the structure with the existing age-old pillars. Some others say it could go against the interests of the Temple on Tirumala. The Veyi Kalla Mandapam was constructed in 1472 AD. The TTD performed some of the rituals under this mandpam from time to time and it was a famous place where some peo-

ple used to visit all the 1000 pillars. In 1975, when the Tirumala -Tirupati Devasthanam(TTD) Board came out with a master plan to accommodate the increasing number of pilgrims, the street in front of the mandapam, which was highly congest-

ed, needed to be widened, and the mandapam was proposed to be shifted. In 2003, the TTD Board approved a proposal to shift the mandapam. But some protested the action and filed cases in the High Court. In 2005, the TTD Board approved the same.

TTD Chairman Kanumuri Bapiraju refused to comment about the restoration of 1000 pillar mandapam . He told Postnoon today it was better if he keeps quiet over the Mandapam issue. He agreed that he was aware of the fact that Jeeyar Swamy demanded for the restoration of Mandapam to its original status with the old Pillars. On another controversy of ‘vaastu correction’ in the premises, Bapiraju said that he was not aware of the demolitions at TTD Administrative building in the name of Vaastu correction. Executive Officer LV Subrahmanayam has been taking up some construction around the main administrative building in the name of Vaastu. Some employees of the TTD opined that any suggestions in this regard have to be made by the Agama pandits for TTD, and that demolitions and corrections cannot be made by individual decisions.

Black flags ‘greet’ Hazare MUMBAI: Anna Hazare was greeted with black flags soon after he came out of a government guest house in Bandra here to proceed to Juhu beach to launch his three-day hunger strike today morning. Nearly two dozen people showed black flags and shouted slogans as security personnel whisked them out of his route. The protesters began waving the black flags when Hazare’s motorcade halted at a traffic signal in Kala Nagar Chowk, Bandra east, near the guest house. The stage is set for Hazare’s three-day agitation as the Maharashtra government and security personnel prepared to make it a hassle-free affair. A Team Anna member said Hazare has already begun his fast in the morning but would first pray at the Gandhi statue in Juhu before proceeding in a rally to Bandra-Kurla Complex’s MMRDA ground — the protest venue. Parliament will debate the Lokpal Bill today. The government on Monday appealed to

A Team ready for health emergency MUMBAI: Team Anna is not taking any chances with 74-year-old Anna Hazare’s health as he prepares to launch a three-day hunger strike here for a strong Lokpal today. The Karnataka Lokayutka was the first in India to be set up in 1986 but became highly active only since 2001 and made history in July this year by indicting the then chief minister BS Yeddyurappa for corruption in illegal mining scandal. Syria clashes kill 30 more as Arab League observers arrive DAMASCUS: The first team of Arab League observers landed in Syria late on Monday to monitor a deal to end nine months of deadly violence, as 30 people died in gunfire in and near the besieged central city of Homs. CNN reported that members of the team were due to travel on Tuesday to Homs, which has been a focal point of the government’s crackdown on anti-regime demonstrations and the site of fierce clashes between the army and deserters. The mission is part of an Arab plan endorsed by Syria on November 2 that calls for the withdrawal of security forces from towns and residential districts. President Bashar al-Assad’s regime has been accused of intensifying its crackdown, which has shown no signs of abating since it erupted in March.

Syrian demonstrators living in Egypt gather for a candlelight AFP vigil near the Arab league headquarters in Cairo The private Dunya television channel, which is close to Assad’s regime, said: “A delegation of 50 observers arrived on Monday evening in Damascus”, adding that 10 team members were Egyptian.

n Indian student was shot dead on Monday in Manchester, northern England, by a white man, police said, announcing an investigation. Anuj Bidve, 23, was murdered in the early hours as he walked with friends from his hotel in Salford, an area to the west of Manchester, towards the city centre. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) called it an awful and unprovoked attack and vowed their investigation would “leave no stone unturned”. “This is a tragic incident and our first thoughts are for the family,” said chief superintendent Kevin Mulligan. “There is going to be a huge amount of concern in the community and I can reassure the family and the community by telling them we have launched a major investigation and no stone will be left unturned until we find the people who are responsible for this.”

Gen Mohammed Ahmed Mustafa al-Dabi, a veteran Sudanese military intelligence officer heading the Arab observer mission, had arrived in the Syrian capital on Sunday. Syria’s Opposition mean-

while urged United Nations and Arab League intervention as the spiral of violence continued. Syrian National Council (SNC) head Burhan Ghaliun told reporters that some monitors were already in Homs “but they are saying they cannot go where the authorities do not want them to go.” Ghaliun urged UN and Arab League intervention “to put an end to this tragedy,” and called on the UN Security Council to ‘adopt the Arab League’s plan ‘ “It is better if the UN Security Council takes this plan, and provides the means for its application,” Ghaliun said. “Opposition leaders charge that Syria agreed to the mission after weeks of prevarication in a ploy to head off a threat by the League to go to the UN Security Council over the crackdown. The observers will eventually number between 150 and 200, Arab League officials said IANS

No plans to sack Pak army chief to avoid coup: Gilani ISLAMABAD:

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Tuesday dispelled rumours the government was mulling over whether to sack the country’s powerful army chief and head of the intelligence to avert a coup. “The rumours that our government wants to remove Director General InterServices Intelligence (Lieutenant) General Ahmed Shuja Pasha and army chief General Ashfaq Kayani are ridiculous,” Gilani told a press conference. “This utterly wrong impression is being created by some opportunists... Had this been the case, I would not have pleaded them to take extension in service.” Gilani said the generals did not ask for extensions in their tenure after retirement last year, but he wanted them to

‘Spreaders’ behind mass protests: Study LONDON: What is the factor that makes social networks tick and catalyses mass mobilisations in revolutions and protest movements worldwide? An Oxford University study of Twitter finds that the most influential group comprise a small number of users close to the centre of a network, described as spreaders. The spreaders play a critical role in triggering chains of messages reaching huge numbers of people. However, early participants and those starting the recruitment process have no hierarchy within the network. They are the leaders of the movement and first movers in

leagues from the University of Zaragoza, Spain, led by Yamir Moreno, analysed Twitter activity data during mass protests in Spain in May 2011. These protests were sparked by the political response to the financial crisis, resulting in demands for new forms of democratic representation. The main target of the campaign was an organised protest on May 15, which brought tens of thousands of people to the streets of 59 cities all over the country. Researchers followed the posting behaviour of 87,569 users and tracked a total of 581,750 protest messages over a 30-day period.

n The pitch became easier and the sunshine worked in India’s favour. The outfield was faster and the Indian bastmen got value for money for their strokes. n India’s problem with the tail continued as Australia managed to stretch their innings. Zaheer Khan’s form was a good omen for India. n Virendra Sehwag got to a chancy 67 and gave India an aggressive start. Rahul Dravid was uncomfortable but hung in there. n The Australian bowlers were often short in length at the start but got their act together. But the pitch had its say. James Pattinson was often dangerous. n Sachin Tendulkar sizzled. The clock was turned back again to the days when he batted fast and furious. And those wonderful drives were back.

ndia were 214 for three in reply to Australia's first innings 333 at the close on the second day of the first Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Tuesday. Sachin Tendulkar was bowled for 73 with three balls left in the day to leave Rahul Dravid unbeaten on 68. Though Sachin missed out on his elusive 100th hundred, he broke Australian Allan Border’s record for most number of half centuries. Earlier, Australia claimed the prized wicket of destructive opener Virender Sehwag at 67. Pace tyro James Pattinson

bowled Sehwag in the penultimate over before tea to bring Sachin Tendulkar to the crease, greeted by a standing ovation from the 50,000 MCG crowd. At tea, India were 99 for two in reply to Australia's 333 with Test cricket's two greatest runscorers Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid batting together. Sehwag was dropped three times on his way to a brisk 67 off 83 balls with seven fours in his 75-run stand with Dravid. He had his first "life" on 11 when he was dropped by Mike Hussey low down in the gully off Pattinson. Sehwag, going for his shots,

gave two more chances on 51 and 58 as he continued to live dangerously. He hit successive fours off spinner Nathan Lyon and next ball he attempted a lofted shot but was put down in a difficult diving chance by David Warner at long on. Haddin hashed a one-gloved diving effort on Sehwag seven runs later off Pattinson. Sehwag, who smashed a one-day record score of 219 off 149 balls against the West Indies in Indore earlier this month, passed 8,000 Test runs during his knock. Gautam Gambhir was the other Indian wicket to fall when

he was surprised by Ben Hilfenhaus's extra bounce and edged to Haddin for three in the eighth over. Earlier in the day, the Australia tail added 56 runs for the last four wickets in the 97 minutes' batting time. Haddin only lasted 10 minutes into the second morning before he snicked Zaheer Khan to Sehwag in the gully for 27 ending a partnership of 72 runs with Peter Siddle. Zaheer finished the best of India's bowlers with four for 77 off 31 overs, while Umesh Yadav and Ashwin claimed three wickets each.

UTD catches up with City Fired by Berbatov’s treble to trounce 10-man Wigan 5-0, Manchester United share top slot with Manchester City on the points table LONDON: Dimitar Berbatov fired Manchester United level on points with Manchester City as his hat-trick inspired a 5-0 win over 10-man Wigan, while the Premier League leaders were held to a 0-0 draw at West Bromwich Albion on Monday. Berbatov has been a bitpart player for long periods this season but the Bulgarian striker seized a chance to replace the rested Wayne Rooney with a clinical treble and

anchester City saw their two-point advantage at the top of the Barclays Premier League wiped out as they were frustrated in a goalless stalemate at West Brom. Mario Balotelli hit the crossbar and had a goal disallowed but City lacked their usual bite at The Hawthorns and were forced to settle for a draw. It could even have been worse for Roberto Mancini's men as Albion rose to the challenge and were unlucky when Jerome Thomas hit the post and Shane Long headed wide. United's five-goal spree — their second in six days after a 50 win over Fulham — means City are now top only on goal difference after Roberto Mancini's side suffered a rare setback at the Hawthorns. At Old Trafford, Sir Alex Ferguson played midfielders Valencia and Michael Carrick in defence, but Park put the hosts

MIRACULOUS COMEBACK MANCHESTER: In the space of 16 days Alex Ferguson’s team have clawed back a five-point deficit while closing the gap in terms of goal difference from 17 to five. They have a golden chance to go top against Blackburn Rovers on New Year’s Eve, the manager’s 70th birthday.

Former Wigan star Valencia struck in the 75th minute and Berbatov completed his treble from the penalty spot three minutes later after Park was tripped by Antolin Alcara. Ferguson conceded United got a lucky break with Sammon's red card. "I thought it was a softish one in that I don't think the boy acted intentionally. It was a bit harsh, I have to say that," he said. MANCINI IN FIX OVER FIXTURES THE HAWTHORNS: Roberto Mancini bemoaned Manchester City's Christmas fixture schedule after watching his team surrender their lead at the top of the Premier League. City were held to a 0-0 draw at West Bromwich Albion on Boxing Day and are now top by virtue of goal difference alone after rivals Manchester United thrashed Wigan 5-0. By the time City face Sunderland on New Year's Day they are likely to have slipped to second with United in action against Blackburn 24 hours earlier. However, it was not the fact his team had allowed their lead at the top to slip which infuriated City manager Mancini, and the Italian instead took aim at the scheduling of their Christmas calendar to accommodate the television cameras. Mancini's team will have just two days to prepare to face Liverpool on January 3.

Quickfire double seals Magpies win

T

Fulham hold Blues to draw C helsea’s Barclays Premier League title hopes suffered another heavy blow as Fulham came from behind to consign them to a third successive 1-1 draw. Fernando Torres flopped on his first league start for almost two months, although he did inadvertently lay on Juan Mata’s 47th-minute opener, the winger’s fifth goal of the season. Fulham belied their miserable away record to equalise nine minutes later through Clint Dempsey’s ninth of the campaign, ensuring the spoils were shared in the west London derby.

Fulham were the better side for 15 minutes, with Dempsey’s bouncing 25yard shot forcing an uncomfortable save from Petr Cech and Orlando Sa seeing an effort blocked by David Luiz before heading Stephen Kelly’s cross over the bar. Torres was unlucky not to give Chelsea the lead when he expertly controlled Mata’s cross on his chest but smashed his volley straight at goalkeeper David Stockdale. Torres’ travails looked to have continued after the restart but the striker helped the Blues break the deadlock inside two minutes.

He failed to control Ashley Cole’s cross but the ball fell perfectly for Mata to sweep home left footed from the edge of the box. Fulham had only scored four league goals away from home all season, the worst record in the top flight, but they were soon level with a superbly-worked goal. The ball eventually found its way to Bryan Ruiz on the right, who tricked his way past Cole and crossed for Dempsey to stab the ball past Cech. Stockdale twice denied Chelsea a late winner, tipping Raul Meireles’ header over the bar before palming away Didier Drogba’s glance from a corner.

wo goals in as many minutes from Hatem Ben Arfa and Demba Ba earned Newcastle their first win in seven Barclays Premier League games 20 against struggling Bolton at the Reebok Stadium. The Magpies had taken only two points from their previous six games while Bolton's victory over Blackburn in midweek ended a run of five straight defeats, and in the first half it appeared very much a battle between two struggling sides. But the deadlock was broken in the 69th minute when Ben Arfa netted his first goal in more than a year and the prolific Ba doubled the lead soon after. Newcastle started well and, in the 14th minute, Ryan Taylor drew a good diving save from Jussi Jaaskelainen with a 25-yard free-kick after Fabrice Muamba fouled Yohan Cabaye. But Bolton were close to taking the lead six minutes before half-time when Cabaye was harshly penalised for a nudge on Nigel Reo-Coker and Martin Petrov's free-kick was well saved by Tim Krul. Bolton's season was summed up in the 55th minute when Ivan Klasnic tripped himself up as he looked to get a shot away. Jaaskelainen blocked Gabriel Obertan's shot before Ben Arfa replaced Leon Best. Petrov fired just wide but Bolton went behind as Newcastle at last put together a move of real quality, ending with Taylor crossing for Ben Arfa to volley only his second goal for the club and his first since suffering a broken leg against Manchester City last season. And two minutes later the game was all but over as Paul Robinson let in Obertan and his cross was clipped in by Ba despite Gary Cahill's efforts.

Blackburn get a point Marc misses his mark, Stoke settle for draw M B

lackburn earned a precious point they hardly deserved in a 1-1 draw against a Liverpool side who once again struggled to impose themselves at Anfield. Charlie Adam’s own goal on the stroke of half-time gave the visitors a surprise lead. Maxi Rodriguez scored his 11th goal in 12 starts with a close-range header shortly after the interval but even the substitute appearance of Steven Gerrard after two months out failed to improve the Reds’ dismal home record of three wins and six draws this season. Luis Suarez and Adam both had early

attempts on goal, with the former particularly involved in the opening exchanges. Rovers goalkeeper Mark Bunn made a point-blank save from Andy Carroll, who next had an effort ruled out for offside. Another assistant’s flag prevented Liverpool claiming a sure penalty against Bunn, but Blackburn were offering little in attack. They were given a helping hand when Adam diverted Morten Gamst Pedersen’s inswinging corner past his own goalkeeper just seconds before half-time. It took Liverpool eight minutes to equalise, Rodriguez heading in from close range after Martin Skrtel’s ball. Gerrard finally got his long-awaited return to action in the 69th minute when he replaced Adam and ran straight on to curl in a free-kick which was headed over by Rodriguez. Liverpool twice thought they had stolen the points in the closing moments, Carroll drawing a fine save from Bunn with a close-range volley and 17-year-old Adam Henley clearing off the line after Daniel Agger’s header from the subsequent corner.

arc Wilson came agonisingly close to grabbing a winner for Stoke as they played out a goalless draw with midlands rivals Aston Villa at the Britannia Stadium. With Peter Crouch and Darren Bent unable to make their returns from illness and injury respectively, both sides lacked attacking quality in the first half, although Villa did hit the woodwork through Emile Heskey, who was subsequently forced off at half-time. There were chances at either end as the game opened up somewhat after the interval, and Wilson almost broke the deadlock in the 69th minute when his header - from Matthew Etherington’s corner - struck the underside of the bar before being bundled away by Gabriel Agbonlahor, with replays suggesting the whole of the ball was not over the line. Heskey came agonisingly close to putting Villa ahead in the 21st minute, his header from Charles N’Zogbia’s corner striking Thomas Sorensen’s lefthand post with the goalie well beaten.

Living in times when cricketers and pundits rue the steep fall in the turnout in the stands at Tests, the 70,068 who showed up at the MCG prove that those who love the most sacred form of the game are not extinct… yet. Rahul Dravid had recently pointed out the seriousness of the drastic drop in spectator turnout at Tests and ODIs and proposed ways to increase its popularity. It seems this fall in numbers in the stands is only in the subcontinent. Perhaps, as Dravid pointed out, it could be due to the rise in temperature. However, the turnout at the Boxing Day Test is a sign that there is still scope for hope.

WHY WE LOVE... Satyadev Dubey

S

atyadev Dubey was asked some years back what kept him so alive and sharp. “I have never known what I know,” he replied — a straight, modest answer. But note that this is the man who brought a paradigm shift to Indian theatre in 1962 by being instrumental in the staging of Andha Yug. Since then he has been a powerful presence on the big, wide stage of Indian theatre, inspiring many artistes on, off and behind the stage. Now he has entered the darkness that sets in when the curtain falls on the greater play that life is… but not before revealing what made Dubey Dubey, “The world is changing and one has to move with it, forget the old ways and discover new goals.”

INDIRA, SONIA AND TELANGANA Hard talk P K Surendran

C

ongress president Sonia Gandhi’s reported musings on Telangana is the most revealing piece of news from Delhi Durbar this winter. While conflicting interests were bombarding her with claims and counterclaims on Telangana, she told some of her inner circles, she’d rather not touch the T pot as Indira Gandhi had ignored it. “Why should I do something my illustrious and brave mother-in-law did not do?” was logic she employed in extenuation of her giving T a decent burial. Circles close to her had provided Sonia with information on how Indira had remain unruffled when the T stir was taking a violent turn during Chenna Reddy’s regime. Indira had argued that states made on linguistic basis rather learn to live with themselves because there would be no end to separatist demands if one keeps conceding it. While Sonia has an argument on this count, the trouble with this reasoning is that it makes one learn to live in a time warp which is romantic but not practical. For instance, if one stretches this logic one could also argue that Sonia should do nothing about the corruption cry and Lokpal since her M-in-L had given it a go by saying it was a global trend. Again, taking a positive lesson from the ‘iron lady’ one could also argue that she never tampered with SC/BC reservation or appeased minorities with a quota and yet she carried the country (save 1977) with her. She did not indulge in rabid communal uttering as some in the Congress (like late Arjun Singh, now Digvijay Singh) do today. The past does provide us with a platform to work on but it does not solve current issues. Nor can today’s solutions stand for future problems. This was realised by leaders of substance in the past and that is why they had advised the future generation to adequately

Thank you for increasing the number of sports pages in your newspaper. While politics in India, particularly in Andhra Pradesh stinks, business sinks and cinema is untrue glamour, sports is the only field where one can involve without any risk. If one reads sports news in the morning, one feels the spirits soaring, so as to be able to put in a good day’s work. This does not hold true with other subjects. Crime brings negativity, politics de-motivates and one cannot survive on fancy stuff like movies. Thank you and keep it up. Jayaram Reddy Shalibanda

They ascribe to the men of the preceding age a wisdom more than human, and suppose what they did to be beyond amendment. I am certainly not an advocate for frequent and untried changes in laws and constitutions but I also know that laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind.” Sonia’s caution and her reasoning carry

But harking back to the past would be unwise in many instances of the changed present. While, I for one would not comment on the needs or otherwise of Telangana statehood, I am peeved at the way the country’s rulers think of issues of today. Thinking always from the vote point has become the bane of our politics and the shenanigans don’t realise that at the end of the string of cheery small firecrackers is a nuclear bomb, as a polity could be divided thus far, no further.

Helpful Info

If ‘Political derby begins and you’re not invited’ is the state of our state political scenario, then we are in for horrible days ahead of us. Progress of Andhra Pradesh, particularly Hyderabad had virtually stopped over the past 2-3 years, what with the Telangana issue. With the state government winning the no-confidence motion recently, it looked like good days would return. But if one goes by Saye Sekhar’s view, it is not going to be so. Information on The Twin-cities Expatriates Association was very useful. Having recently relocated to the city, I and my family were initially struggling to get the hang of essentials here. We’ve had to depend on the trialand-error method when we first landed. Experimenting on important aspects like quality of schools and residential area close by is not the right way to go about. While we struggled to adjust with a relatively new place, I’m glad for others who would be adding to the influx of this welcoming city. Good work, keep it up. M Culshaw Marredpally

Burning stomach? Check for

ULCERS

The small intestine helps absorb nutrients

Contrary to popular belief it is not spicy food that causes peptic ulcers — but avoiding it can reduce the agony

Ranjani Rajendra ranjani.r@postnoon.com

Y

Symptoms • Burning pain in the abdomen between the breastbone and the belly button (the most common ulcer symptom) • Nausea • Chest pain (usually dull and achy) • loss of appetite • Frequent burping or hiccuping • Weight loss

ou’ve been dealing with a burning sensation in the abdomen that sometimes jolts you out of your sleep, nausea, sometimes chest pain and worse with vomiting for some time now. You put it down to your love for spicy food and try to cut down on the masalas and tank up on food that is supposed to cool down that tummy, but it doesn’t seem to alleviate your symptoms much. Chances are you’ve got ulcers in your stomach. And it has nothing to do with your love for spicy food. Peptic ulcer is a defect in the lining of your stomach. It could happen either due to an infection or certain medication that you’ve been taking. The stomach lining is protected by a soft mucous coating, but sometimes the acid present in certain drugs or the bacteria can break down this protective layer and affect the sensitive lining causing ulcers. Common symptoms include a burning sensation in the stomach, nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite. “Occasionally peptic ulcer patients may present for the first time with gastrointestinal bleeding or perforation of the intestine. Both these conditions are medical emergencies and need to be attended to immediately,” says Dr Manu Tandan, senior consultant gastroenterologist at the Asian

Institute of Gastroenterology. “Peptic ulcers commonly affect the middle aged population and is seen in equally in men and women. The causes could be multifactorial and stress and lifestyle habits like smoking and drinking alcohol play a role in its occurrence. There are certain drugs like common painkillers and blood thinning medication that is used to treat coronary heart disease that can affect the stomach lining too,” says Dr I Srivenu, consultant gastroenterologist at KIMS. The ulcers can occur in the stomach or in the duodenum (small intestine) and can be managed through medications depending on the severity of the condition. “For mild ulcers, regular antacids can be prescribed. But if the ulcers are more severe then it requires further investigation like an endoscopy. Treatment is then suggested depending on the cause,” explains Dr Srivenu. However, it is advisable to report an ulcer to your doctor and not dismiss it as something minor. This is because certain kinds of cancers mimic the peptic ulcer symptoms. So if your symptoms persist it is best to consult a doctor. Also treatment for ulcers can last anywhere between six weeks to three months. But if you stop taking medications midway because you’ve noticed improvement, chances are that the ulcers can recur. Which is why doctors advise that a patient complete the full course of treatment for best results.

Dr Manu Tandan

What is the small intestine? Where is it located and what are its functions? Is it normal for there to be bacteria in the intestines, is it not harmful for us? Small intestine is that part of the human intestine that lies between the stomach and the large intestine. In an adult it varies between 20 to 22 feet in length. It is coiled in loops and is located in the abdominal cavity. The small intestine is attached to the abdominal wall by a double layered membrane called the mesentery. Blood vessels supplying the small intestine run between the layers of mesentery. The small intestine includes a short duodenum, a long (6 to 8 feet) jejunum and a longer terminal part the ileum. The stomach opens into the duodenum while the ileum is connected to the large intestine. The main functions of the small intestine are proper mixing, digestion and absorption of the ingested food. The bile and pancreatic juices which help in digestion enter the small intestine and help in absorption of food. This is absorbed in the small intestine and used for various body functions or is stored. The small intestines have a host of bacterial flora under normal conditions. This normal flora helps to maintain a stable internal environment. When the flora are replaced as a result of drugs or disease, recolonisation occurs with other bacteria and this may prove to be harmful for the human host.

Like their name suggests, The Other People does stand out from the crowd. Loud, energetic and a lot of fun, TOP told us about the year that was and what their forecast for 2012 is

ix guys, one hat, random jokes and music. The best way to describe The Other People would be on the lines of Creedence Clearwater Revival's classic, Old Time Rock n' Roll. “...Today's music ain't got the same soul. I like that old time rock and roll.” For a city that prides itself on moving relentlessly into the future, Mumbai has a strange addiction to retro music. The Other People is another such band from Mumbai that takes centre stage in front of a rather eclectic crowd, right from hooting college students to stiff grey-haired aunties and uncles. The guys love mixing Elvis Presley with Bon Jovi, a touch of Jason Mraz and Queen, the band manages to please everyone! “Prior to any performance, we sort of do an overview of the kind of audience that we would be playing for, so that the music we play stays apt. But, so far we have been lucky and have had mixed audiences with people as

Old Time Rock n’ Roll

young as 16 to as old as 60. We believe in keeping everyone happy,” explains Samuel, who likes to classify the group as an alternative-pop-rock band. Committed to quality music and entertainment extraordinaire, The Other People recently performed in Hyderabad as part of a charity event hosted by Heal-A-Child Foundation. “We play at a lot of venues across Mumbai and other cities, so drawing a comparison between a performance at a charity event to a nightclub would be unfair,” says Samuel speaking about the overwhelming response they

received at the event. His five enthusiastic bandmates include Zarir Warden (lead vocalist), Danesh Khambata (drummer), Garth (keyboard and back up vocals), Loy (bass guitar) and Gavin (lead guitarist and backup vocalist). With unstinting talent and a passion to perform, the band consistently raises the bar to deliver something unique each time. Of course, being from India, the band adds a little Indian flavour to each song, which distinguishes them from the other retro rock n’ roll

bands around the world. Like most bands of today, The Other People too, found their roots in college. “Zarir and I go way back. We were in school together but had our own set of friends. It was much later that Zarir and I got in touch and decided to form a band in college along with Danesh,” says Samuel, going on to add that Loy and Garth are the newest additions to the band. But, very few bands manage to stay together once they step out of college, what with all the priority changing melodrama. But, the band has been in showbiz for seven years now, and Samuel says that it was their love of music that kept them together. “Zarir and I had been through so much and we stuck together through everything. Music is what we love making. Our jam sessions are usually a lot of fun with everyone bringing to the group their share of experiences. The youngest member of our group is 20 and the oldest is 60; so it’s an amazing collaboration of the old and the new,” says Samuel.

he more successful a musician becomes, the more demands on their time there are to prevent them from being creative. Tours, interviews, general promo work, all hold back the vital task of making new songs. Be thankful then, for the British Council, which is currently sending some of our best songwriters on extended trips to China charged with a simple task; go and make art.

Just after Christmas, Jamie Woon, the BRIT School graduate who made waves this year with a dubstep-inspired soul sound, will head to the northern city of Xi'an for six weeks. The 28-yearold from New Malden was selected by the British Council and fellow organiser the PRS for Music Foundation, alongside electronic experimentalist Imogen Heap, folk musician Gareth Bonello and pianist Matthew Bourne, who are or have been on separate trips to other parts of the country. The work they produce will form part of UK Now, an ambitious celebration of British arts running in China from April to November next year, but generally speaking their brief is vague, and all the more inspiring for that. From the British Council's perspective, it's an important place in which to have a presence. "China is obviously a very important country with a very big economy, and an enormous audience with a lot of potential," says Graham. "The impetus behind this is to send some of our best young musicians out there to work, take inspiration, and meet the music industry. That creates trust and understanding and we know from experience that those seeds that are sown can spread and develop over the years." (The Animal is on holiday but will be back next week)

Because you are what you wear

The Indian fashion scene has been very vibrant in 2011 as it has a new target audience. Different trends surfaced and made their presence felt, some fizzled out as soon as they came and some are here to stay. All in all, variety was the order of the day

CELEBRATION OF INDIVIDUALITY

E

very season is exciting for fashion since it’s so mobile. Trends keep changing every day and fashion icons across the world come up with something new constantly. While the most basic changes take place every passing season, trends that become popular go on to stay longer. 2011 also saw a lot of swing in terms of fashion. Colour blocking was something that was perhaps the most remarkable one. We bring you the designers’ perspectives. "Fashion this year has adopted the mantra of emphasising individuality, a tool used to create your own identity," says internationally celebrated designer Sanchita Ajjampur, going on to add, "Come spring, summer, winter or fall, there is no trend in India at all — trends tend to stay the same from season to season. 2012 sees the world prepared for a fresh start — to enter a new state of wonder and sophistication. The fashion industry, this year, has taken the longer, nontraditional route considering the lifespan of a product in its entirety. A new design direction emerges as we pay respect to originals. The introduction of a touch of the unexpected is the Faux Real product that has its own message pushing design boundaries, questioning aesthetic preconceptions and finding new applications." Fashion this year has been more versatile and that goes beyond the obvious choice of fabric colour and pattern, which allow them to be adapted to any taste or style. One interesting thing that fashion guru, Prasad Bidapa points out is that women in India this year have started investing more in shoes as compared to earlier. "Women spend enough money on clothes and accessories, but they often ignore the shoes. Good shoes are an investment and this year I have noticed women wearing better shoes. The other trend, which I noticed was

20

that a lot more colour was to be seen. The LBD, which is a European concept, is popular among Indian women too, but there was a distinct departure from it. It was also interesting to see people investing in jewellery despite the recession, and it was less of European and more of Indian designs. It was also good to see the Roman sandals being shown the door, which I personally never liked," he says. With regards to menswear, there was a return to basic and masculine trends, "Floral patterns disappeared and the masculine look was in. In terms of looks, there was a strong return to our roots," opines Prasad. Throwing a little more light on men's fashion in India this year, Bangalore-based designer, Paresh Lamba says, "Velvet was probably the biggest influence in men's jackets this year. The Indian look was really big — the bandhgala jacket and its many avatars were big hits and so were the Jodhpurs. Nudes were big in menswear too. There was a reassertion of structured clothing, especially post Diwali and linen was big during summers and the unstructured jacket in linen were big hits during that season too. The silhouette was slim and lean." For women, the sari, especially in chiffon was a big hit. Printed sleeveless dresses that morph into tunics when worn over trousers create a chic look. Easy A — line ‘60s shifts, dynamic Grecian drapery, asymmetric off the one shoulder styles, with reinvented folds, pleats and ornamental details are some of the takeaways. This year, knitwear also gained popularity, which balances the play between a masculine and feminine ‘70s vibe with elongated, slim-fit knit separates in the form of skinny ribs and skirt-sets. The new designs for this year added a modern twist to old classics but also transcend those boundaries to create something new. One can check the global luxury collections. The heritage of the future is being created now and the result is a sublime mix of non-traditional, super-hybrid influences.

FASHION FORECAST FOR 2012 NISHA JAMVWAL'S ON WHAT WOMEN WILL BE BUYING

SANCHITA AJJAMPUR GIVES US THE DOS AND DON’TS

T

he big rule for 2012 is to break rules and be liberated in choices. To create trends than be a wannabe, who follows fashion trends blindly. And the greatest accessory for the year 2012 is a smile. Believe it or not , it is the first time that a YSL campaign has the model smiling. The colours for the year are golds, oranges, pinks, salmon and neutrals. Patterns, prints and embellishments — the sea, which has been one of my favourite inspirations in fashion is here in a big way, representing peace, tranquility and meditative calm. Prints leaning towards baroque design, abstract art motifs reminiscent of Mondrian, deep sea designs with starfish and shells, digital prints, bird prints will be seen predominantly. Silhouettes are soft and flowing, flirty with feminine details and whimsical carefree drapes are big. The 1920s drop waist is big and it’s back and the waist is at the hip.

W

earing loose clothes instead of clothes that fit properly and close to the body without being too snug is one of the bad trends people follow. Party dresses worn all black can be replaced with feminine and a stylish floaty. A-line dresses always work and the trick lies in the fact that a floaty dress will enhance the blending of the upper and lower part of the legs, creating a uniform and polished look. ‘Jeggings’ for men did not make the cut and therefore did not last too long this 2011. The boyfriend jeans played their role this year but are now being overshadowed by leggings and well-fitted denims.

AS TOLD TO TANIYA TALUKDAR

PARESH LAMBA ON THE CHANGES MEN’S WARDROBE WILL SEE

C

hecks will rule — in structured and unstructured garments. Colours like fuchsia, lavender, purple, yellow, mint green, lime green etc, will be the ones to go for this summer. The silhouette will become slightly more relaxed, but the slimmer look will prevail. There will be more regional influences in dressing. Ornate would come in with more force and the festive season will see more bling.

Jolie working on a film about Afghanistan

Hefner prefers playing cards over girlfriends

P

layboy chief Hugh Hefner says that he spends his evenings watching films and playing cards instead of getting intimate with girlfriends. The 85-year-old, who is dating 28-year-old Shera Bechard and Anna Sophia Berglund, 24, prefers to keep himself busy with movie nights and board games during the week. “Monday night I watch an old movie with the guys, Tuesday night I play games with my girlfriends and the girls from the Playmate House - usually dominoes or Uno. Wednesday I play Gin Rummie with the guys,” contactmusic.com quoted Hefner as saying. “Thursdays I go out for dinner with the girls, and weekends we have friends over for something to eat and a movie. Friday and Saturday are classic movies and Sunday is a new film,” he added.

Lady Gaga sued by former assistant J

ennifer O’Neill, Lady Gaga’s former personal assistant has filed a suit against her former employer, alleging that she was overworked and underpaid. The 41-year-old worked for Lady Gaga for 13 months, accompanying the 25-year-old singer on her 2010 Monster Ball world tour. O’Neill alleges that she put in 7,168 hours of unpaid overtime and is owed more than $380,000, according to New York Post. O’Neill says she catered to the singer’s eccentric whims and demands around the clock. She insists she had to ensure ‘the promptness of a towel following a shower’ and acted as a ‘personal alarm clock to keep Gaga on schedule.’ The lawsuit was filed in Manhattan federal court last week against the superstar’s Mermaid Touring company for unpaid overtime. This is not the first personal assistant to complain about working for Gaga. Former employee Angela Ciemny claimed she had to sleep with the singer most nights because she refused to be alone, according to Poker Face: The Rise and Rise of Lady Gaga. A spokeswoman for Gaga has branded the lawsuit ‘completely without merit.’

H

ollywood actress Angelina Jolie has revealed that she has been working on a script for a movie about Afghanistan but she is not very confident about it as of now. “I don’t even think it’s good. Maybe I’ll dig it out, but I don’t have the confidence yet to start even thinking in that way,” femalefirst.co.uk quoted her as saying. The 36-yearold, stepped behind the camera to make her directorial debut In The Land Of Blood And Honey, a film she wrote herself about a romance between a Serbian soldier and a Bosnian woman. It has been nominated for a Golden Globe Awards this year and also won a Producer’s Guild award. IANS

Shruti Haasan made her debut in Anaganaga O Dheerudu opposite Siddharth earlier this year . Although the film didn’t do well at the box-office, it didn’t deter film makers from signing her. Soon after her debut, she was approac hed for Siddharth’s O My Friend, Pawan Kalyan’s Gabbar Singh and 3 opposite Dhanush. Shruti was supposed to do Dammu with Tara k; however, she opted out of the film citing date issues. She also mad e her debut this year as an actor in Tamil films with A Murugadoss ’ 7th Sense, which was a big hit. This is just the beginning for the actor and we wonder what is in store for her in 2012.

jmal could have become a doctor but the acting bug bit him back in 2005 and it took almost six years before the Telugu film industry took notice of this talen ted actor from Kerala. In KV Anand’s Rangam, Ajma l played the role of Vasanth, an honest political leader who ends up becoming the chief minister of the state. So convincing was he in the role that he got plenty of offers in Telugu films that were on similar lines. He’s currently acting in Ram Charan–Taman naah starrer Rachcha, where he’s playing a villain.

kshay Reddy’s tryst with cinema began with visual effects extravaganza Anji, starring Chiranjeevi in lead role, where he played a child artiste. He later received good appreciation for his roles in films like Little Hearts and Chinna Chinna Tamarigal and soon he acted in several television serials like Anubandham, Bangaru Bomma, Chadarangam, Padma Vyuham which were aired on ETV. His performance in Bangaru Bomma earned him a lot of fame as he went on to win the prestigious Nandi Award, the Yuvakalavahini Award and Aaradhana Award. “I was never satisfied with my skills and later I took a break from acting to complete my studies,” he says. “I auditioned for the theatre programme at Harvard University, which is the toughest programme to get into. Out of 2,000 people who audition every year, only 18 are taken into the masters degree programme and the next 24 are invited to the Stanislavsky Summer School, to study at the Moscow art theatre School. I was one among the 24 people to learn at the Stanislavsky Summer School. They liked my work there, and invited me to the Moscow art theatre school to study advanced level acting. I think I am the first Indian to study at the prestigious school,” Akshay reveals. Later, he joined the famous Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York to study method acting. “Recently, I acted in a play called Passport, written by Gustavo Ott and directed by Alfonso Rey, as a part of Venezuela-New York Theatre Festival, and it received rave reviews,” he says. With a promising start to his acting career, Akshay is definitely an actor to watch out.

KAKURO

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
