allari Kiran Kumar Reddy, son of former minister the late Amarnatha Reddy, was indeed an underdog in the race for the top job soon after K Rosaiah tendered his resignation out of the blue in November 2010. Yet, Kiran emerged the dark horse. Considering his skills of articulation and ‘inexperience’ in the Cabinet — Kiran never worked as a minister, his detractors wrote him off. At best, they gave him three to six months. But he belied the expectations of his critics and cynics and strode his way ahead and stayed glued to the gaddi. He is now firmly in

COVER STORY the saddle despite several occupational vagaries that confronted him. Postnoon takes a peek into his rollercoaster journey. But for a few pinpricks typical of the Congress, Kiran enjoyed almost the fullest support from the high command. If losing out 26 legislators to YS Jagan was the first jolt he received soon after the State High Court ordering probe, keeping the door ajar for them to return undoubtedly demonstrated his political dexterity. By far, Jagan has been the

lone excruciating pain point for Kiran throughout his year-long stint in office. Support for Kiran Kumar didn’t come overnight. He had to toil very hard for this. He has several advantages over his peers or rivals. He hails from the family of politicians. Former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao was his father’s political guru. Kiran himself was elected to the State Legislative Assembly four times. The leadership team at the Congress high command gave a blanket assurance of their help to him always. Thanks to their no-holds-barred enmity with Jagan, a group of media houses began singing paeans to Kiran. He successfully turned it to gain an upper hand over his political opponents. He also contrived support from the Telugu Desam Party, the main Opposition in the State. For obvious reasons, the serrated opposition too softened its stand. Interestingly, TDP leadership began fighting a battle within, which came as a blessing in disguise for the Kiran Kumar Reddy regime. This led to some criticism from the YSR Congress that Kiran indulged in match fixing with the TDP. But the Chief Minister’s answer — the tacit support to court case against Chandrababu Naidu and others by YS Vijayalakshmi — to this

Losing elections in Kadapa left the bitterest taste on his tongue. The Banswada byelection result too was no different charge diluted the campaign. The equations appear to be changing. As if Dame Luck smiled on him in the last two months, YS Jaganmohan Reddy, the impudent son of his mentor, will probably return to the Congress fold. If he does, Kiran would get full credit for ensuring the homecoming of the prodigal son. He became increasingly ambidextrous in handling things, particularly after the historic merger (into the Congress) of Praja Rajyam Party at the will of its founder Chiranjeevi. ‘Racha banda’, and 15 lakh jobs (1.60 lakh in government), restructuring the eSeva to ‘Mee seva’, and Rajiv Yuva Kiranalu are some schemes that have perked up his image. He wants to outwit himself as also NTR and YSR by introducing Re 1 a kg rice scheme. And, now he is talking

about ‘zero per cent’ interest for some agricultural loans. Kiran adroitly handled the ‘Sakala Janula Samme’, which almost rattled his dispensation, by ensuring that it withered away with one section after the other calling it quits from the agitation. That whether the onerous

task of winning the party back to power lay on his shoulders is a conjecture of time, for elections are more than 1,000 days away. The appointment of Botsa Satyanarayana, who sulked soon after the allotment of ministerial portfolios, as the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president and also continuing him in the Cabinet, much to his discomfiture, has indeed irked the Chief Minister. Where Kiran Kumar Reddy could not gain good marks was the way he handled his own cabinet colleagues. Some of them tried to absolve themselves of their ‘collective responsibility’ when they tried to wash off their hands from the alleged murky deals, soon after the High Court ordered a probe into Jagan’s businesses consequent upon a letter written by P Shanker Rao. Shanker Rao’s utterances against his own colleagues, the subsequent admission of the same as a case by the State High Court asphyxiated the State administration for a while. But the quashing of the decision by the Division Bench of the High Court proved to be face-saving. Losing elections in Kadapa, despite deploying the entire army of his Cabinet and also party, left the bitterest taste on his tongue. Banswada by-election result too was no different. Yet, he got his one year the way he wanted. Now, Kiran is pulling up his socks to fight a bigger battle ahead. But the political enigma of success — will he or won’t he be able to march ahead — stares at him.

elugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu said that there was no governance in the State and the entire administration was into the grip of bureaucrats. The officers are facing CBI probe and it is all chaos here, he stated. Babu said that Kiran Kumar Reddy has no control over his party, ministers or even the administration. He said that the State administration was being run by some bureaucrats and the elected government has no control over it. “The CM is unable to take any decision and the people are not benefited in any way so far in the State,” Naidu said. He reiterated that his party would move the no confidence motion.

Rajiv Yuva Kiranalu, which seeks to provide training and employment to the unemployed youth, plan to provide interest-free loans to farmers and getting 14 F removed from the Presidential Order are good moves. Attempted to eradicate corruption at the grassroots level by launching 'Mee Seva' for issuance of certificates in a time-bound manner. He failed to ensure remunerative prices for the agricultural produce and warding off suicides among farmers. City hi-tech, but women still abused

rvashi R (name changed) was an intermediate student who like any other girl enjoyed going out with her friends and had her share of college fun. Life was a smooth ride for the teenager till she started getting gifts from an unknown person. Urvashi didn’t know someone was keeping a track of her for almost a year. Then she realised that a young man was suddenly making his appearances. “He (let me call him Aditya) , began shadowing me,” Urvashi says. “It did not strike me anything amiss for a while, but then the midnight calls began,” she recalls. Soon Aditya bought a house near her house and opened a restaurant in her lane. Urvashi says she was scared of the guy. He seemed to have been obsessed with me and would do anything to stop others interacting with me. The man even beaten up the auto drivers who “dared” to transport her. The last straw was when Urvashi, while on way to college, was pulled into a car by Aditya and five boys. “He threatened me saying, if you don’t agree, you know what will happen to you but he did not do anything and just threw me out of the car and I fell on the middle of the road and hit my head and bled.”

“That is when I decided to tell my parents. We shifted residence and I changed my cell number. My father met him and asked him to keep off since there is no mutual love,” she said. Urvashi is now finishing her degree but she shivers at thought of the three-year ordeal. One of the fastest growing IT hubs, Hyderabad takes the notorious top rank in crime and crime against women. The City is also in focus on high-profile crime against women, take for instance, the recent murder of Kiran Reddy, the niece of Union minister S Jaipal Reddy, who was killed by her drunken husband Chaitanya Reddy in a fit of rage over an argument on June 17. Another is the case of Chiranjeevi’s daughter Srija who complained about dowry harassment from her husband and in laws. Andhra Pradesh has been on one of the top slots with 21,436 cases reported in 2009 and 21,559 in 2010 — which indicates a rise of .57%. While the crime rate against women seems to go on a higher scale all over the country, there are laws pertaining to women and their security that many are

Advocate Sangeeta Bhaskar, who comes across such cases, feels many of the domestic violence cases are shoved under the carpet rather than reported. “Although many a time wives are the victims, but domestic violence is not just restricted to that, it spreads across to sisters, mothers and daughters as well. Mostly women don’t come out in the open because of the societal pressures and also when they report it, they are looked down upon by the authorities and other people.” she shares. Women have been easy target from as long as one can think of but now when any of them have gathered courage to come out in the open and speak out, connections and power has shut them up fearing worse. Advocate Sangeeta throws light on the issue, “If anytime a woman gathers courage and takes the stand against the wrong, she is mostly shut up by the muscle power or the political connections, the

sinner boasts of many times. Also, money plays a major role to hush up things which becomes difficult for the defenceless woman.” she laments. V Sandhya, president of Progressive Organisation of Women, laments about the present situation of women stating the cultural discrimination that prevails in the State. “AP is certainly competing with Delhi in terms of crimes against women and if we see it in southern region, AP tops across States. We have a much discriminated cultural aspect which bends more towards the economic customs and rituals that are seen across all classes.” she says. “The government is inefficient and hardly has worked towards the betterment of the fairer sex. According to the National Crime reports Bureau (NCRB), we stood first in crimes like trafficking, domestic violence, molestation but nothing has been done by the authorities so far.”, she complains.

Clinical psychologist Savita Date Menon, feels mostly it’s because women are hesitant about such issues and hence keep mum. “Many a times it is because of the hesitation of sharing their story to the world which makes them resistant towards complaining or bringing it out in the open. Along with that, women always go on with this thought that may be her husband will feel apologetic and not do it the next time which keeps going on and suffering. The point they do not understand is a woman beater always feels apologetic after beating but does not change his attitude and this keeps going on.”, she shares adding, “I also feel with the kind of increase in the number of crimes in the city, Andhra Pradesh is aping Delhi in terms of violence, culture etc.” While the city feels pride in the Hi tech city tag it has received past sometime one can look into the darker side of humanity and see the rising brutal violence against the women. Where on one side we have Pratibha Patil as our President holding the reigns of the country, a city where women like DK Aruna (Information and Public relations minister) or B Karthika Reddy hold the power, the plight of women does not go unnoticed. DL seeks explanation on MLAs returning to Cong HYDERABAD: Health minister DL Ravindra Reddy here on Wednesday demanded that the YSR Congress party president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, who had earlier claimed that the Congress government in the State was surviving on his benevolence, to reveal his stand afresh as his loyalists were returning to the Congress. Speaking to mediapersons in the Secretariat, Dr Ravindra said that the Congress MLAs, who switched over their loyalty to the Kadapa MP were now started returning to the parent party as they realised their folly of shaking hands with the YSR Congress leader. Instead of announcing support to Kiran Kumar Reddy, the Jagan group legislators should support the Congress party. He also suspected that they were supporting Kiran Kumar Reddy only to gain personal mileage. He also made it clear that there was no question

of the Congress party re-admitting Jagan. The minister also supported the comment of PCC chief Botsa Satyanarayana that the MLAs, who had won on Congress ticket, should come to Gandhi Bhavan and DCCs and participate in the party activities. On the performance of the Kiran Kumar Reddy government

on the occasion of his completion of one year in office, Ravindra Reddy said that KKR government worked successfully even during unfavourable situations. In addition to successfully implementing the previous welfare schemes, the Chief Minister launched new schemes for the poor, he added. Admitting that he has differences of opinion on some issues with the CM, Dr Ravindra Reddy made it clear that he would stand by his earlier remarks on Re 1 kg rice scheme. He reminded that the Centre was planning to enact “Food Security Act” under which 35 kg of food grain would be provided at the rate of Rs 3 per kg to 50 per cent of BPL families. Therefore, where was the need to take up another scheme like Re 1 kg rice in the State, he questioned. He said that he did not say anything wrong about handing over of 108 services to GVK.

Another retired IAS officer quizzed by CBI HYDERABAD: The CBI officials here on Wednesday interrogated another retired IAS officer K Prabhakar Reddy in connection with the illegal mining case involving Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) of former Karnataka minister Gali Janardhana Reddy. Prabhakar Reddy, who was in charge of Mines & Geology department during the regime of YSR was called

by the CBI as a witness. He is the third IAS official to be questioned by the CBI in the case. Sources said that the CBI sleuths quizzed the retired official and extracted vital information about grant of leases to the OMC. Meanwhile, the Kadapa district revenue officer Hemasagar appeared before the CBI officials in connection with the illegal assets of YS Jagan case.

One Jr college in each mandal T he CM N Kiran Kumar Reddy has announced that the government would set up a Junior College in each mandal across the State. He said that the State government had allotted 50 per cent reservation for women in the ensuing Panchayathi and mandal elections. Stating that the government would sanction house pattas and, loans

to women, he added that it would take steps to directly deposit the loan amount in to the beneficiary’s bank account from Hyderabad. He also said the State government has issued 2.25 crore ration cards to beneficiaries in the State so far. He stated the government would fill up all vacant posts in various departments by December.

On her replying to the remaining 192 of the 1,339 queries framed under Section 313 of the CrPC, the judge adjourned the case to November 29 when statements of the other three accused, including Jayalalithaa's aide Sasikala and her foster son V Sudhakaran will IANS be recorded.

NEW DELHI: An estimated 19 million animals would be saved annually courtesy new recommendations calling for an end to animal dissection and experimentation in universities and colleges, animal rights body People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) said on Wednesday. The guidelines came from the University Grants Commission — the apex regulatory body for higher education in India after a campaign by PETA India. According to UGC's website, it has published official recommendations calling for an end to animal dissection and animal experimentation for university and college zoology and life sciences courses in a phased manner. The recommendations would soon be sent to teaching institutions across India for implementation, it added. "The UGC's decision follows PETA's extensive campaign, which included letters to the chair and expert committee of the UGC, petitions from students and other caring individuals asking for a dissection ban," said a statement by PETA India. "Soon undergraduate students will no longer be required to dissect animals and the process would be optional for postgraduate students," it added. The recommendations also call for modern modes of learning like software to replace the use of animals for experimentation. IANS

Unity at save Euro mission

France keeping its top AAA credit rating, despite warnings from agencies that it is under threat. Germany, still seen as the strongest eurozone economy, has so far escaped the fury of the markets but its long term economic health depends on its EU trading partners reducing their deficits and stabilising the economy. France has talked up the Strasbourg meeting, which Sarkozy's Prime Minister Francois Fillon has dubbed 'very important', but Monti dampened expectations, calling it 'a very informal working visit' with 'no agenda'. Italy has criticised what deputy central bank governor Fabrizio Saccomanni complained is France's and Germany's dominance in the handling of the crisis, and for-

Sarkozy, Merkel and Monti to meet on debt crisis, put differences aside STRASBOURG: The leaders of the eurozone's three largest economies meet here on Thursday in a bid to resolve their differences over how to handle Europe's critical debt crisis. President Nicolas Sarkozy of France will host Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany and Italy's Prime Minister Mario Monti — who took office last week after concerns over Rome's reform plans forced out his predecessor Silvio Berlusconi. Together they will seek ways to 'accelerate' the 17-nation bloc's bid to calm bond markets by undertaking reforms of its financial governance, as the crisis threatens to spread to Spain and the eurozone core. Sarkozy has an additional goal: with five months to go before he seeks re-election he has staked his credibility on

9

mer EU commissioner Monti has called for a European response. Under Monti's gaffeprone predecessor Berlusconi, Italy lost much of the status that goes with being a G8 member and the eurozone's third biggest economy, as it struggles under 1.9 trillion euros in debt. By meeting with Merkel and Sarkozy in Strasbourg, one day after talks with EU leaders in Brussels, Monti hopes to regain some of Rome's influence. But France and Germany are far from united in their approach. On Wednesday, Sarkozy's Finance Minister Francois Baroin repeated his call for Germany to relax its opposition to authorising the European Central Bank to declare itself Europe's lender of last resort. France — and many other eurozone members — feels that,

if the ECB is allowed to monetise sovereign debt, its almost unlimited resources would finally end market speculation about potential defaults. But Germany, with its bitter memories of inter-war hyperinflation, remains adamantly opposed to any measure that would appear to be simply printing more euros, undermining ECB independence and its inflation-busting mandate. Germany is sticking by an agreement hammered out in Brussels on October 26 and 27 to expand the powers and capital of the European Financial Stability Facility — designed as a bail-out fund but too small to protect Italy. Paris still hopes that Germany will back down over the ECB if the crisis worsens, despite Merkel's many public protestations to the contrary.

ames Murdoch has resigned from the boards of the publishing units within News Corp's British newspaper arm, which used to include the now-defunct News of the World tabloid at the centre of the phone hacking scandal, regulatory filings show. Murdoch, son of media mogul Rupert and deputy chief operating officer of News Corp, remains chairman of News International, the News Corp unit that houses its British newspapers, and a member of the Times editorial board. The News International unit has been damaged this year by the revelation that people working for the popular Sunday tabloid hacked into the phones of thousands to generate news.

Historic Thanksgiving venue for OWS Protesters WASHINGTON: from Washington's two Occupy Wall Street offshoots flocked on Wednesday to a historic church where Abraham Lincoln once prayed for a Thanksgiving buffet and some robust words of support. The New York Avenue Presbyterian Church threw open its basement and laid out an afternoon spread of turkey, mashed potatoes, corn and pumpkin pie, plus kosher and vegan options, with enough on hand to feed 500. Organizing the feast was Occupy Faith DC, an inter-faith coalition set up a month ago to give food, equipment and spiritual support to Occupy DC in McPherson Square and Occupy Washington DC in Freedom Plaza.

New York Avenue Presbyterian Church lay a Thanksgiving feast for Occupy protesters in their basement "We understand and we are in total solidarity with you," James Lee of Occupy Faith DC and the Network of Spiritual Progressives, a faith-based social justice movement, told the diners. "There's a lot of love for the Occupy movement," he added. "There are millions of people who want you to succeed, so don't stop... The goal is to have hundreds of thousands in the streets by springtime.

Occupy DC demonstrators receive a Thanksgiving holiday meal from volunteers at the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in AFP Washington, DC, on Wednesday

Thanksgiving, which falls on the last Thursday of every November, is a major family holiday in the United States, dating back to the 17th century when Pilgrim settlers feasted in gratitude for a good harvest. In lieu of saying grace, Thursday's meal began with a hare krishna mantra, while "singing rabbi" David Shneyer played Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land" and the folk tune "We Will Not Be Moved" on an acoustic guitar. In New York, Occupy Wall Street was to return Thursday to Zuccotti Park — from which it was forcibly evicted last week — for a Thanksgiving feast to which "all members of our global community" were invited.

Will Akula’s exit turnaround SKS? Postnoon News

The much-talked-about exit of Vikram Akula from SKS Microfinance Ltd, the first listed MFI in the country, gave rise to numerous questions among investors. Some investors with whom Postnoon interacted in the last two days came up with numerous posers. Is the exit of Vikram Akula from the helm of SKS Microfinance, panacea to all its woes? Are the problems that have been dogging the publicly listed MFI, which posted a daily loss of Rs. 4 crore in the second quarter, induced by him? Was the decision to give marching orders to Suresh Gurumani from the position of CEO and Managing Director unilateral by Akula and wasn’t the board involved in it? Can Akula’s resignation from the position of executive chairman of SKS Microfinance make the Andhra Pradesh Government repeal or revoke its enactment? Will SKS Microfinance make a turnaround and earn profits ever? Will it be able to do business in Andhra Pradesh, which is considered the most fertile ground for such business? Why is the microfinance interest rate – which works out to almost 36 per cent – never calculated in a

realistic manner? Shares of SKS Microfinance surged by five per cent on Thursday to its highest permissible level for the day — a day after the company’s founder and executive chairman Vikram Akula resigned from its board. The shares rose to as high as Rs 121.80, up 5 per cent from its previous close, within seconds of the commencements of trading in the stock market this morning. This was the highest permissible limit on the BSE for the stock, on which the exchange has imposed a five per cent circuit filter — a mechanism that limits any upward or downward movement in the share price by this margin. The country’s only listed micro finance institution said last night that Akula would continue with SKS as a “consultant” till March 2012 and “assist with the transition.”

Microsoft mulling new Yahoo! bid SAN FRANCISCO: Microsoft has stepped up as a potential bidder for Yahoo!, making a deal to review the struggling Internet pioneer’s financial books, The New York Times reported on Wednesday. In signing a non-disclosure agreement, according to the Times, Microsoft has joined a small pool of suitors that includes private equity firms that appear to be preparing serious bids for Yahoo!. Microsoft has reportedly been collaborating with private investors to assemble a multibillion-dollar offer to purchase the Internet firm that spurned the US software giant’s takeover effort in 2008. Microsoft has since arranged for its Bing search engine to power queries at Yahoo! websites and to share in

revenue from online advertising sold by the Sunnyvale, California-based firm. Microsoft has reason to protect its relationship with Yahoo! by not letting it fall into the hands of a potential competi-

tor, according to analysts. At least nine private equity firms are reported to be eyeing Yahoo! and its global audience of 700 million monthly visitors to the company’s various websites, including Yahoo! News, Yah-

oo! Finance and Yahoo! Sports. If Microsoft were to succeed in buying Yahoo! it is believed it would spin off the company’s Asia assets, which include online commerce titan Alibaba. Alibaba is 43 percent owned by Yahoo! and is considered one of its best assets, but the Chinese firm reportedly feels it has outgrown its US partner. The relationship between the two companies was strained earlier this year in a dispute over Alibaba’s online payments platform Alipay. Alibaba Group Chairman Jack Ma called on Yahoo! last month for an answer to his longstanding offer to buy all or part of the US Internet giant, saying delays were hurting both firms. Once seen as the Internet’s leading light, Yahoo has struggled to build a strongly prof-

itable, growing business out of its huge Web presence and global audience. Yahoo! continues to search for a new chief executive, after it fired Carol Bartz in September, under three years after she was brought in to help turn around the struggling Internet company. Microsoft was publicly humiliated in 2008 when Yahoo! co-founder Jerry Yang rejected a generous bid for the company at $33 a share, a valuation of more than $47 billion. At the time a frustrated Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer emphatically said he was through with Yahoo! acquisition talks. Meanwhile many Yahoo! shareholders blasted the company for spurning Microsoft, contributing to Yang’s decision to step aside as chief executive.

Champs Barcelona secure top spot Reigning champions confirmed top spot in Champions League Group H with a 3-2 victory over already-qualified AC Milan at the San Siro

M

ark van Bommel’s early own goal was cancelled out by Milan’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic before a Lionel Messi penalty put Barca up at the break. Kevin Prince Boateng equalised a second time before Xavi struck a 63rd-minute winner for the visitors. In the other game in Group H, Viktoria Plzen claimed their first win of the group stages 1-0 over Bate Borisov in Minsk. Marek Bakos netted in the 42nd minute to put the Czech side in pole position to seal a Europa League slot. APOEL Nicosia made history by becoming the first Cypriot side ever to get past the group stages with their gutsy goalless draw away to Zenit St Petersburg confirming their top-two place. In a match which was held up due to smoke from flares set off by the home fans, APOEL staged a classic rearguard

action to claim a point against a Zenit side unbeaten in their last 12 matches. Porto’s 2-0 win at Shakhtar Donetsk lifted them to within a point of the Russians with a winner-takes-all tie in Portugal to come. A second-half opener from Hulk and an own goal from Razvan Rat gave Porto the points. Bayer Leverkusen secured qualification as goals from Eren Derdiyok and Manuel Friedrich gave them a 2-1 win over Chelsea in Group E. The win sent Leverkusen to the top of the group — and ensured their qualification — while Valencia moved level on points with Chelsea after crushing Belgian also-rans Genk 7-0 at the Mestalla. Roberto Soldado was the Valencia star as he blasted a first-half hat-trick after Brazilian Jonas had given them a 10thminute lead. Second-half goals from Pablo Hernandez, Aritz Aduriz and Tino Costa completed the rout. The drama continued in Group F where Arsenal secured qualification as group winners with a 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund, while Olympiacos stole a shock 1-0 win over Marseille EVENING STANDARD in France.

Last-gasp Leverkusen stun Chelsea

F

or the third time on their travels in Group E, the Blues took the lead, Didier Drogba scoring only his second goal of the season shortly after half-time. But, as against Valencia and Genk, the visitors threw away victory, substitute Eren Derdiyok equalising before Manuel Friedrich completed the comeback in stoppage-time. To make matters worse, Valencia beat Genk 7-0 to wipe out Chelsea’s superior goal difference and leave Villas-Boas’ men needing to win or keep a clean sheet in next month’s final group game to reach the last 16. A boisterous home crowd almost had something to celebrate in the 32nd minute. Former Blues favourite Michael Ballack rose highest to head Gonzalo Castro’s corner back across goal and against the crossbar, with Ramires on hand to clear.

Chelsea crashed to a last-gasp 2-1 defeat to put them in real danger of failing to reach the Champions League knockout stage and pile further pressure on Andre Villas-Boas Drogba should have silenced the home fans completely six minutes before the break. Daniel Sturridge played an inch-perfect through-ball and Drogba rounded Bernd Leno before lashing wildly into the side-netting from a tight angle. But Chelsea were in front inside three minutes of the

restart. Sturridge floated another fabulous ball in to Drogba, who brilliantly held off Friedrich before turning and rifling left-footed into the bottom corner for only his second goal of the season. And the striker almost twice laid on a second when his flick-on was headed stra-

ight at Leno by Frank Lampard and his pass set up Branislav Ivanovic for a blast also too close to the goalkeeper. Chelsea had thrown away a lead in both their previous Champions League away games and they went close to doing so again twice in a minute, only for Petr Cech to win the battle of the masked men. The goalkeeper first tipped Ballack’s overhead kick over the bar before producing a brilliant reaction save to repel his former team-mate’s closerange volley. Derdiyok levelled 17 minutes from time, the ball finding its way to Sidney Sam on the left and his cross drifted over Cech and the entire Chelsea defence, allowing Derdiyok to nod into an empty net. Then with the final whistle looming, Leverkusen snatched victory, Friedrich leaping superbly to power Castro’s corner in off ES the crossbar.

Van Persie seals Gunners passage Arsenal qualified for the Champions League knockout stages for the 12th consecutive season at the Emirates Stadium

V

an Persie took his 2011 goal tally to 33 goals in 30 matches by heading home Alex Song’s cross before adding a second from close range four minutes from time following Thomas Vermaelen’s flick-on. A win seemed unlikely for the home side after Dortmund dominated the first half, but they faded in the second period before pulling one back in injury time through Shinji Kagawa. Dortmund settled quickly and Poland striker Robert Lewandowski — a reported target for Liverpool — stretched the Arsenal backline, with Kagawa forcing a low save from Wojciech Szczesny. Theo Walcott continued to be the main outlet down the right for Arsenal, and he was correctly flagged just offside from Van Persie’s pass as he ran through to tap the ball into the net. The England man turned provider when he drilled in a low ball across the six-yard box, which Roman Weidenfeller palmed away just as Van Persie looked set to pounce. The Gunners went ahead four minutes into the second half when Song charged down the left, before barging his way through three defenders with no little skill and chipping the ball towards the far post. Van Persie arrived on cue to send in a downwards header, which Weidenfeller got a hand to, but could not ES keep out.

India cautious after Sehwag burst

Lee-Hesh win to stay alive in World Tour finals doubles I

LONDON: Three-time former finalists and fourth seeds, India’s Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes, beat seventh-seeded Austrian Jurgen Melzer and German Philipp Petzschner 7-5, 6-3 in their Group A match to stay alive in the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals doubles. Bhupathi and Paes — losing finalists to Americans Rick Leach and Jonathan Stark in 1997, to another American pair Sebastien Lareau and Alex O’Brien in 1999 and to American Daniel Johnson and South African

Piet Norval in 2000 — improved to a 31-13 match record for the season, highlighted by three titles. “I thought Hesh played brilliantly today and moved great,” Paes told after Wednesday’s match. “Especially at the net, he made some pretty cool volleys, one of them a block backhand half-volley crosscourt and you don’t teach that at home.” Bhupathi said, “We played a high quality match. I think it was important to start off well and we were able to keep that momentum throughout

the match. Hopefully we can keep it up on Friday and win through to the weekend.” Bhupathi and Paes broke Petzschner to 15 for a 3-1 lead, but a well-placed backhand volley winner by Petzschner on Bhupathi’s serve in the next game got the first set back on serve. At 5-6, 0/40, Petschner saved three set points with powerful serves, but on sudden death deuce, he stayed back and Bhupathi hit a deep forehand return to his feet. Bhupathi and Paes won the first set in 39 minutes, having won 18 of 23 points on their first serves. In the second set, Bhupathi was almost broken at 2-2 but the ‘Indian Express’ survived and took a 5-3 lead when Petzschner hit two double faults from 30/30. Bhupathi calmly closed out to love. Bhupathi and Paes reached the Australian Open final in January where they lost to Bryan twins Bob and Mike, while US Open champions Melzer and Petzschner are now 0-2 in round-robin play at the circuit finals. Paes and Bhupathi will next meet top seeds and three-time former champions Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan on Friday. “We’ve played them before and beaten them,” Bhupathi said. “We’ve played them so many times before, so we know what to expect,” he added. Paes chipped in to say, “The quality of tennis has always been high and the differences between winning and losing is literally one or two shots. We know that the energy of the match will be really hightempo. It will be a fast-paced match, as they like to play fast. “So we have to be ready for that. At the end of the day we need to play good tennis, like we always have done against them, IANS it will be a great match.”

Baichung’s football academy to come up in Siliguri KOLKATA: The much-awaited academy of Indian football icon Baichung Bhutia on Wednesday got a green signal from the West Bengal government and it will come up in Siliguri. The former India captain said getting land would not be an issue and he is now looking forward to setting up a world class facility with three artificial turfs in Siliguri. “The academy will have three artificial turfs and will have top coaches to train carefully-chosen talented footballers,” Bhutia said after his meeting with North Bengal devel-

opment minister Gautam Deb at Writer’s Building. “It will also have world class facilities like swimming pool, gymnasium which can be used for other sport.” Bhutia, who also owns club United Sikkim FC, said he would rope in top coaches in the world for the upcoming academy. “Top football coaches would be available for the academy and it would have world class facilities in four to five years time. We will carefully choose the trainees,” he said. Asked why he chose Siliguri, Bhutia said, “The target is north

Bengal and Northeast. Siliguri is the biggest football hub in Bengal after Kolkata which already has good facilities,” he said. The North Bengal development minister Gautam Deb said Bhutia has written about this in a letter to chief minister Mamata Banerjee who is away in Delhi at the moment. “We have agreed in principle to have the academy in Siliguri. The details of this would be finalised after the CM comes back. It will be named as the North Bengal Football Academy,” Deb said.

India, thus trail the West Indies by 516 runs in the first innings. After a quick start, India lost Sehwag to a delivery from Sammy. The watchful Gautam Gambhir and the reliable Rahul Dravid played out the session not giving the West Indies any

further breakthrough. The whole cricket fraternity, particularly those present at the stadium, will now wait and hope to see if Sachin Tendulkar gets to his 100th first class ton in this Test. Earlier, the West Indies final pair added 15 runs to the overnight total to end their first innings at a mammoth 590 all out. Fidel Edwards and Devendra Bishoo defied the Indian attack for 15 minutes today morning. Off-spinner R Ashwin got his second five-for in Tests, with a ball that rooted out Bishoo’s off-stump.

Crocodile gets beauty treatment ahead of annual mating season B usinesses would go any lengths to gain publicity. Even if it means attempting to beautify a crocodile. A day spa in Darwin, Australia has had its employees do just that. As unbelievable as it may seem, this croc-makeover has happened for real. Or so the pictures suggest. The Parap Day Spa recently managed to acquire the saltwater creature from a crocodile research centre in Darwin. According to the spa, their staff then spent hours exfoliating the crocodile, giving it a manipedi and a proper bikini wax. A few pictures reveal a limp crocodile surrounded by a bunch of enthusiastic women, attacking it with gloves, waxing strips and nail-

polish. The most obvious question that comes to mind is, “Why?” Why on earth would someone want to provide spa services to a crocodile, beauty being the least of its concerns? Apparently, the spa was engaged in an attempt to show off their skills. Fair enough, after crocodile scales, exfoliating human skin must seem like child’s play. Another reason quoted by spa manager Louanne Grasmeder for the bizarre grooming session was the upcoming crocodile mating season. “Breeding season is just around the corner, and we want her to look her best,” she said. “The lengths we go for training,” added staff member Jamillah Allen.

Excitement as Boring event sells out

A

conference on boredom has got off to an exciting start by becoming a sell-out Boring 2011 is being held in London, with organiser James Ward taking charge for the second year. His aim is to look at the dull side of life and topics include electric hand-dryers, square roots and a man who kept a list of everything he ate over the past year.

He considers the devil — or boredom — is in the detail and sees the subject as a positive, rather than a negative and something that counteracts the aggressive “must-have” culture of the 21st century. Mr Ward sees boredom as a social positive and a counter-culture to the noisy, attention-demanding world of modern media and advertising.

He did admit to being a little concerned that the 400strong audience might start to find some subjects more interesting than intended. “Once you start to examine anything... be it toilets, hand-dryers or even idle chat - when you really inspect those things it’s difficult for them not to become the most fascinating subjects in the world,” he told Sky News. “Therein lies the dilemma.”

She is now demanding £4,500 in damages and £700 in compensation and a civil suit is being heard at a court in Augsburg this week. The woman — who was already suffering from tinnitus — has been offered £1,700 in damages, but is asking for more. Well either that or she didn’t hear the doctor make the offer.

Having survived long centuries, political upheaval, and even bombings during World War II, Leonardo Da Vinci’s masterpiece, Last Supper, now battles the risk of damage from air pollution due to its location in one of Western Europe’s most polluted cities

Saving Da Vinci’s Last Supper from air pollution Astonishing bionic enables blind to see LONDON: Limited trials of a bionic eye that could restore sight to the blind have produced “astonishing” results, says a new study. The tiny implantable microchip permitted patients, who had given up on seeing again, read a clock and identify daily objects. The wafer-thin device is to be implanted for the first time in Oxford and London, with surgery scheduled within weeks, the Daily Mail reported. If these and similar operations in Europe validate the efficacy of the device, manufactured by a German firm Retina Implant, it could be available by 2013. Most of the middle-aged patients were to be treated for retinitis pigmentosa, a hereditary disease that destroys the light-sensitive retina at the back of the eye. A microchip packed with 1,500 light sensors is implanted to the back of the eye, to restore sight to those who lost it to the disease. The sensors convert light to electrical signals, which stimulate nerves in the retina to pass down signals to optic nerve which would gap into the brain to form an image. Robert MacLaren, surgeon who led the trial, cautioned that the surgery is still experimental and the device does not work in all cases.

A

ir quality monitors show drastic reduction in air pollution at the painting’s location. In late 2009, the refectory of Santa Maria Delle Grazie Church, where the painting is located, installed a sophisticated heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system to protect the painting from the polluted air of Milan. To test the effectiveness of their pollution countermeasures, Italian officials called on Constantinos Sioutas, Fred Champion professor of civil and environmental engineering at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering. For his ongoing research, Sioutas has designed unobtrusive air samplers that are compact and quiet. “These air sampling tech-

nologies are suited for use in sensitive facilities such as art galleries and museums. They don’t disrupt the day-to-day operations,” he said. A multi-national team that includes USC scientists used the monitors to determine that indoor pollution has been drastically reduced at the church, though visitors enjoying the painting remain a potential source of soiling. The team’s findings will be presented in December in Milan. The team deployed two sets of air quality monitors for one year at the church, and found that — for the most part — the Italian authority responsible for the facility housing the famous painting is winning the war with outdoor air pollution.

Fine and coarse particulate matter concentrations were reduced around the painting by 88 and 94 per cent, respectively from their corresponding outdoor levels. “It’s a spectacular reduction,” Sioutas said. “It is, frankly, very impressive.” Indoor sources of pollution, however, may still pose a threat of soiling on the Last Supper. Nancy Daher, USC graduate student and lead author of a journal article on the team’s findings, said that fatty lipids from the skin of visitors to the church still appeared in significant quantities around the painting — even with visitor access to the painting strictly regulated. Her article appears this month in Environmental Science and Technology.

Only a handful of patrons are allowed into the church via an airlock-style chamber at any given time, and are only allowed to stay for 15 minutes at a stretch. Airborne lipids from visitors’ skin can combine with dust in the air and, if they come in contact with the painting, soil it, Daher said. “Even the painting itself is emitting,” she said. Tiny particles of wax used in early repair efforts on the painting also can get into the air, soiling the painting in the same manner. In addition to aiding in the conservation of the Last Supper, the team’s research can be used as a benchmark for future studies to protect indoor artworks and antiquities.

SMS bullying becoming more common: Study

A

growing number of U.S. children say they have been picked on via text messaging, including having rumours spread about them or been threatened, a study said. Of more than 1,500 middle school and high school students surveyed in 2008, 24 per cent said they had ever been “harassed” by texting — up from 14 per cent in a survey of the same students the year before, according to findings published in Pediatrics. “Harassment” meant that peers had spread rumours about them, made “rude or mean comments,” or threatened them. Outright bullying, which was defined as being repeatedly picked on, rose to 8 per cent of students surveyed

from just over 6 per cent the year before. Researchers, led by Michele Ybarra of Internet Solutions for Kids Inc in San Clemente, California, said that the findings suggest that attention needs to be paid to children’s text-messaging, but that parents need not be alarmed. “This is not a reason to become distressed or take kids’ cellphones away. The majority of kids seem to be navigating these new technologies pretty healthfully,” she said. The study included 1,588 10to 15-year-olds who were surveyed online for the first time in 2006. The survey was repeated in 2007 and 2008, with about three-quarters of the original group taking part in all three. When it came to Internet-

based harassment, as opposed to SMS, there was little change. By 2008, 39 per cent of students said they’d ever been harassed online, with most saying it had happened “a few times.” Fewer than 15 per cent said they’d ever been cyber-bullied. When students were picked on, most seemed to take it in their stride, which researchers said was a good sign.

Of those who said they’d been harassed online, 20 percent reported being “very or extremely upset” by the most serious incident, down a bit from 25 percent in 2006. Ybarra and other experts said that the main message for parents was to try to help their children manage their relationships in a healthy way, since the issue was fundamentally a relationship problem. Cyber-bullying still remained a smaller problem than the old fashioned kind, they said.“ Meanness and bullying are still much more likely to occur face-to-face,” David Finkelhor, who directs the Crimes Against Children Research Center at the University of New Hampshire in Durham said.

Any transition serious enough to alter your definition of self will require not just small adjustments in your way of living and thinking but a full-on metamorphosis. Martha Beck

Hormone changes can cause cysts

Dr Divya T Sudarshan

Unexplained weight gain? Check your thyroid Ranjani Rajendra ranjani.r@postnoon.com

N

o matter how less you seem to eat, stay away from calorific food and make sure you exercise as regularly as possible, you’ve been piling on the kilos and are watching that expanding waistline in dismay. It beats you how the bulges could be possible when you’re being especially careful. Add to that bouts of sluggishness, constipation and hair fall are all driving you up the wall. You might want to consult your doctor and possibly get some tests done to rule out thyroidism. One of the commonest problems affecting women, thyroidism is a problem when the thyroid gland (located in the neck) cannot function properly and leads to fluctuations in the production of hormones. There are two kinds of problems that could occur when a person has thyroidism — over production of the thyroid hormone known as Hypothyroidism and under production of the hormone, a

condition known as Hyperthyroidism. Hypothyroidism is the commonest kind of thyroidism affecting women. The thyroid gland is located in the front of the neck just below the larynx. “It releases hormones that control metabolism. The most common cause of hypothyroidism is an inflammation of the thyroid gland, which damages the gland's cells. Classified as an auto immune disease, thyroidism usually occurs because the body begins producing antibodies that interfere with the production of the thyroid hormone,” says Dr Prasun Deb, consultant endocrinologist, Yashoda Hospital. Some women develop hypothyroidism after pregnancy. Other common causes of

hypothyroidism include: congenital defects, radiation treatments to the neck, radioactive iodine used to treat an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), surgical removal of part or all of the thyroid gland and viral thyroiditis. “Some of the common symptoms of hypothyroidism are unexpected weight gain, lethargy, slower pulse rate, constipation and disturbances in the menstrual cycle,” says Dr Raman Boddula, consultant endocrinologist at KIMS Hospital. Thin and brittle hair, changes in the skin and its tex-

ture, swelling of the arms and legs due to water retention etc are other signs to watch out for in patients with hypothyroidism. Usually this condition can be treated with the help of medications as prescribed by the doctor. These medicines are designed to replace the hormones that the body fails to produce due to hypothyroidism. Doctors also advise getting frequent blood tests done to monitor the hormone levels done. (Read more on Hyperthyroidism tomorrow)

My doctor says I have a 6 cm ovarian cyst, and may need surgery, but my friend had a 7 cm cyst and she was only given medication. Why is that? Medicine is an inexact science and that is why we have normal ranges. The human body is so different and still function similarly like our faces. 7 billion people all with eyes, noses and mouths and yet how different we look and act! Ovarian cysts are like us, many and varied with a few killers. Cysts are basically fluid filled sacs that form on the ovary, and can be caused by different conditions mostly based on hormonal changes, so there are follicular cysts, luteal cysts, haemorrhagic cysts, endometriotic cysts, dermoid cysts, poly cysts as in PCOD, cystadenomas etc. If I continue, I would risk this article to read like a medical journal. Most cysts being related to changes in the body are harmless. Ovarian cysts can occur at almost any age but are commonest during the child bearing years. They occur most often in women with early onset of menses, have irregular cycles, hypothyroidism, previous ovarian cysts, who have more upper body fat, infertility medications etc. One BIG advantage of the OCP’s is that they reduce chances of ovarian cysts, as they regulate hormones and don’t allow you to ovulate. Most times the patients may have no symptoms at all and it may be an incidental finding and that is why ovarian cancers are rarely detected early. Occasionally we have patients who complain of a heaviness/ fullness in the lower abdomen, sudden shooting pain after exercise, intercourse, vaginal spotting and a large cyst may be found on examination.

(The concluding part to this article on ovarian cysts will appear next week. The writer is a gynaecologist and obstetrician practicing at Happy Women Clinic. You can write in to her at happywomenclinic@gmail.com)

From mundane to luxury look

Dress

for the occasion

Designer Jatin Varma, a regular face at the Lakmé Fashion Week and a favourite of many celebrities including British pop star Keisha, shares his top ten rules of style

STYLE RULES

= Don't try and do too much at once, keep your style and look clean and chic, you look much stronger that way. Pick one style per outfit and don't go overboard, often one or two accessories look fabulous with a simple outfit. =Avoid ill-fitting underclothes. These tend to create bulges, and are all too evident under your top or dress. Old underclothes create a sagging effect, which looks absolutely horrendous. Do buy the correct size of underwear, and maintain it properly. =Go for clothes that fit, too big or too small clothes look terrible. Be careful while shopping, do ask for help if needed. Remember that clingy material tends to show bulges. =Go for a look that suits you, and your image. Your clothes should reflect your own personal style. =Put in splashes of colour. Go

for colourful clothes, get colours that look good on you. Play around with reds, yellows and blues!

=Never make the mistake of buying something that is in fashion but does not suit you. Chances are you will look ghastly, and the purchase will so not be worth it. Remember that your fashion sense should complement your look and your personality. =Dress appropriately for the occasion. Don’t wear jeans to a formal function, similarly, don’t wear something that is overtly revealing to an office party. Be

sure of what you’re wearing, and you must create the right kind of impression, not a negative one. =Invest in a good pair of jeans. Go for comfort, there are lots of styles which are fashionable this year. It is important to try them on before you buy, if you are going for skinny jeans get stretchy ones. If you have curvy hips go for low boot cut jeans to show them off. If you need a little more room for thighs and calves go for a relaxed fit, and for the butt go for low waist, low pockets and balance things out with flared ankles. This season go for dark colours and textures. =Beware of wrong colours, know your skin and hair colour and check what colours compliment you. =Stay away from inappropriate make-up. Wear light make-up during the day. During summer use light make-up and for winters opt for darker and matte make-up.

Must-have fashion items n The black blazer, which is also very popular ly known these days as the boyfriend’s jacket. It is versatile and can spice up an otherwise rather boring outfit. n Animal prints - It is not necessary that all of us can work such an item, hence would recommend a leopard-print scarf, which you can use with a monochrome outfit to make it stand out from the crowd. n A pair of red flats and a striped shirt, both of which are trendy and equally glamorous because they are the prerogative of someone with a strong personality and, most importantly, take courage to not be ordinary. n A statement necklace. It doesn’t have to be pricey or valuable, it just has to have that little extra something. n The little black dress (LBD) couldn’t have possibly been left out of the top, as it

remains a must have for all women, regardless of their age or the season when they plan on wearing it. n A pair of black opaque tights is another must-have. A great pair of tights can make your legs look slimmer and help you get away with wearing a dress that’s a little too short. n A classic cut black trench coat is also very helpful in making an outfit more elegant and stylish. n Coloured jeans - Denim goes to new heights in red, green and cobalt blue. n Satchel bag - Their clutch handle gives them signature style. n Chandelier earrings - Big and bold, they add elegance to evening wear as well as street wear. A peep into the lives of cityʼs stars and achievers

20

She’s all of 28 and is already at the helm of a company that helps students realise their dreams. Unconventional, effervescent and a go-getter by nature, Abha Agarwal is a businesswoman to the boot

A CORE OF STEEL I believe in

Padmini C padmini.c@postnoon.com

T

hey say that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Sure enough Abha Agarwal doesn’t. What she does is tell a person by their shoes. “The first thing I notice when someone enters the room is their shoes. It’s amazing how much you can know about their personality from what they are wearing. It’s true!” she insists playfully. But don’t be duped by the frivolous chit-chat, because Abha is anything but that. Right after her undergraduation from St Francis, she got

n

Having a strong work ethic

accepted to the Ivy League universities like Harvard and Stanford. Family obligations didn’t allow her to go but she did come out of the experience with a great business opportunity in hand. “I realised around then that there was a paucity of dedicated counselling centres in the city which could help aspiring students wanting to study abroad. So I decided to bridge that gap,” says Abha, who founded her own company Paramount Global, seven years ago. Hailing from an enterprising Marwadi household with a family business of their own, Abha’s decision to set out on

n

Making my own decisions

n

her own met with some apprehension. “I was going into unchartered territory, so yes, there was a lot of worry to begin with. But I was very sure this is what I wanted to do. I grew up wanting to be an entrepreneur, and this was my chance. After a couple of years when they saw how the venture was doing, their worries were laid to rest,” says the 28year-old. Abha’s company has in fact been so successful that she now has plans to expand her educational consultancy and take it pan India. Her biggest achievement, she says, is “Unlike others in the business,

Having selfconfidence we have never had to advertise. Our work spoke for itself. We grew by word of mouth. I go to sleep knowing that we’ve done good work and helped people,” quips Abha. Her biggest challenge needless to say is her age. “When parents first see me, they are unsure about what to make of me. But when they see my work and realise I know what I’m doing, they come aboard. Some even think they can push me around because I’m young but they soon find out otherwise,” says the MBA holder, laughing. Abha’s interests include fashion, writing, and hanging out with friends. But her overFUN GALA: Abha with parents Nitin Agarwal and Manjari and siblings Shivendra and Anuradha

riding passion, believe it or not, is cars! “I’m crazy about cars. I read, research and love everything about them, especially SUVs. One day I want to own a Porsche Crane,” she gushes. As someone who considers herself an extrovert and unconfined by traditional outlooks, Abha is also extremely close to her family. “We are a very close-knit family. Our schedules notwithstanding, we make time for each other. And most importantly, we have an annual family vacation where we take one month off to go travel the world. That’s our bonding time!” shares Abha.

More a son than a daughter

T

alking about Abha, her mother Manjari says, “I always knew she was a little different. She was always more a son than a daughter. She was very clear about what she wanted to do. She is very focussed, believes in herself and is passionate about her work.” Manjari further adds, “As parents, we were of course worried. She was venturing into something unknown. But then we saw how serious she was about this and so decided to trust her with it. She has grown a lot and learned a lot and made us very proud.” While Manjari rues that she gets little time with Abha on a dayto-day basis, she says that their annual vacation rectifies that. She says, “Unlike other kids these days who go on trips with their friends, Abha ensures that all of us go on our holidays together. It’s uninterrupted family time!”

YRF launches company in Hollywood

B

ollywood’s prestigious production house Yash Raj Films (YRF) is now ready to make inroads in the American film industry — it has launched a new wing, YRF Entertainment, in Hollywood that will develop and produce feature films for the US and international market. Actor Uday Chopra will serve as the CEO of YRF Entertainment. The new company is funded by Yash Raj Films, the 41-year old studio which was founded by

Yash Chopra. Uday, who has featured as an actor in many of his father’s productions like Mohabbatein, Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai and Dhoom series, is excited about the new venture. “My family has a deep commitment to making and distributing quality films that entertain and enlighten audiences. I share that passion, as well as a love for American films that I have had since childhood. It is that enthusiasm and my love of the creative process of filmmaking that drove me to start this new venture,” Uday said in a press statement. IANS

Desi Boyz gets A-certificate, Rohit Dhawan disappointed

T

he Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) last week viewed two of the most awaited films of the year — Rohit Dhawan’s debut film Desi Boyz and Milan Luthria’s The Dirty Picture. They were passed with an ‘Adults Only’ certificate, and the latter has suffered one minor cut. Rohit, whose dad David Dhawan has apparently never got an A-rating in his entire career as a film-maker, is dismayed at his maiden film being tagged as adult fare. “I’m extremely disappointed and saddened by the censors’ verdict. I’ve made a positive

feel-good film. I think it’ll go down as the cleanest ‘A’ certified film ever,” he said. Starring Akshay Kumar and John Abraham, the film is about two jobless guys who become male strippers to earn money. It is releasing on Friday. However, a senior film-maker on condition of anonymity, said, “With due respects to David Dhawan, we all wish his son well as a second-generation filmmaker. But the film is about male escorts, and that is adult content. Period. Anywhere in the world males escorts are subjects for adult contemplaIANS tion.”

bbas Mustan’s thriller Race 2, sequel to the 2008 movie Race will release on November 30, 2012. Director duo Abbas-Mustan and producer Ramesh Taurani of Tips zeroed in on the release date of the film after several discussions. “Race 2 releases November 30 next year. We felt it was just the right date to release our film,” Taurani said in a press statement. The sequel went on floors earlier this year, and the first schedule of the movie was wrapped up in Mumbai on Monday. Starring Saif Ali Khan, John Abraham, Deepika Padukone, Bipasha Basu, Anil Kapoor and Ameesha Patel, the film will definitely be something to watch out for, says Abbas. “Race 2 is in the same genre and will be made on as grand a scale as the original. We will be shooting in Turkey and Cyprus next. The story has plenty of twists and turns and every character will have grey shades,” he said. The film is a multi-starrer and if sources from the sets are to be believed, the shooting went of quite smoothly. IANS

Courteney Cox aspires to be a cougar

A

ctress Courteney Cox wants to become "cougar" and start dating younger guys. The 47-year-old, who split from husband David Arquette last year, has starred in three series of Cougar Town — a story about a divorced woman who dates much younger men. "It depends on your definition of cougar. I was married for all of those years to a man seven years younger than me so obviously I'm attracted to younger men," a website quoted Cox as saying. "I'm not being a cougar right now, but we'll see what my future holds," she added. IANS

Radcliffe's parents initially against Potter role

A

ctor Daniel Radcliffe almost missed out on the role of Harry Potter because his parents were initially unsure and thought it would disrupt his life as he will have to live in LA. The 22-year-old, who played the schoolboy wizard in all eight Harry Potter movies, says his mother and father changed their mind after director Chris Columbus decided to shoot most of the movies in his native England. "Chris Columbus had seen David Copperfield and said, 'I want to audition this boy'. They went to my parents, and, at the time, the deal was to sign on for, I think, six films, all to be done in LA, and my parents simply said, 'That's too much disruption to IANS his life.’”

ihanna’s latest music video We Found Love has been banned in France after the love scenes were deemed too suggestive. The video, which shows a destructive relationship between a couple, can only be broadcast after 10 pm because their love scenes were deemed too “suggestive” to watch before the “watershed”, reports a website. In television parlance, the term “watershed” denotes the time period during which programmes with adult content can air. The promo was earlier slammed after it appeared to allude to the abusive relationship Rihanna had with former boyfriend Chris Brown, who pleaded guilty to assaulting her in 2009. IANS

Carey has collaborated with Legend for a remake of her song When Christmas Comes, which originally featured on her 2010 album Merry Christmas II You, reports a website. The stars shot the promo in California earlier this month and now Carey has revealed her sixmonth-old children, Moroccan and Monroe, will feature in it. “When Christmas Comes, people need to hear the song; I think John Legend swung it home! I think the fact that the babies are in the video is great. I wrote a line in the song that says We’re gonna laugh together as the children play — it was cute because I was pregnant when I sang it and the babies are here now,” IANS she said.

ctress Angelina Jolie, who experimented with hard drugs and self-harming during her teenage years, says she still has those traits. “I’m still a bad girl. I still have that side of me. It’s just in its place now. It belongs to Brad. Or our adventures,” a website quoted the 36-yearold as saying. Jolie, known for her wild past, also feels lucky to have not died young. “I went through heavy,

darker times and I survived them. I didn’t die young, so I’m very lucky. There are other artists and people who didn’t survive certain things,” she said. “People can imagine I did the most dangerous and the worst. For many reasons, I shouldn’t be here. Parasuram Naidu is quite confident about the success of his upcoming film Solo

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2011

SOLO

will be a milestone in my career

“I

have learnt from my mistakes,” says Parasuram, the director of Yuvatha and Anjaneyulu. His debut film Yuvatha was a surprise hit and people drew parallels between his style of writing with that of Puri Jagannadh. However, his next film Anjaneyulu couldn't repeat the magic of his debut film despite having Ravi Teja in the lead role. “I don't see a point why we should do a post mortem after a film flops. Success or failure isn't in our hands. I had to move on,” he says. It's quite refreshing when you come across film-makers who are candid about their work and Parasuram, who's affectionately called Bujji, admits, “I have seen both highs and lows within a span of three years. When I was directing Yuvatha, I was in complete control of what I was doing and while directing Anjaneyulu, I really didn't have the time to check whether I was doing what I wanted to do.” Talking about his filmy connections, Parasuram reveals that he entered the film industry to follow Puri Jagannadh's footsteps. “He's my cousin and I consider him as my role model. I was doing my MBA at Andhra University when Puri Jagannadh had already made it big in the industry. At one point of time, I was supposed to finish my MBA and go abroad; however, my mother passed away and I was clueless about my future. That's when I decided to come to the film industry and I approached Puri Jagannadh,” he reveals. That doesn't sound like he had to struggle a lot to get a break in film industry. He says, “On the contrary, I used to meet Puri almost everyday for eight months. He wanted to check if I was sincere enough to be inducted into his team or not and

one fine day, he just gave up and asked me to join his team of assistant directors.” His stint in Puri Jagannadh's team has had a great influence on him. “I used to read his scripts everyday. Maybe that's why my work will always have his influence. It feels great when people say that they can see Puri Jagannadh's style in my writing,” he adds. Post the failure of Anjaneyulu, he saw some films slip away from his hands. “I had lost my market. At one point of time, I tried writing routine stories thinking that they'll be a safe bet, but I felt a vacuum and decided not to proceed,” he recalls. So, what's so different about his upcoming film Solo? After all, every other film-maker seems to be directing a love story these days. “In Solo, the hero falls in love because it fulfills a need,” he replies. The film has Nara Rohit, Nisha Aggarwal and Prakash Raj in lead

roles. “The conflict isn't really between Rohit and Prakash Raj. In Solo, the hero's conflict is with himself. He's the villain in his own love story,” Parasuram reveals with a sense of pride and adds, “I am quite sure that this film is going to be a milestone in my career.” Talking more about the film, he says that he cast Nara Rohit after watching his debut film Baanam. “He comes from a political family and he made his debut with a serious drama. Rohit is a very sensible guy and I decided that he would be perfect for this role. Solo has a thin line which very few people can appreciate when you narrate it to them. Sometimes, it catches actors off-guard when you don't have a introduction song and a fight in your story,” he grins. Solo was shot in 50 days and Parasuram is quite elated about having worked with Prakash Raj. “He worked for 21 days for this film and every day he would hug me after reading dialogues of his scenes,” he says. Every single day? “Yes. Every day. The dialogues in the film are so good that you'll feel like placing them in your dictionary,” he says. Solo is all set to hit the screens on November 25.

KAKURO

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
