ncidents of vehicle torching continued on Monday night, sending a distress signal among policemen, who are worried that if such incidents continue, the City will be at the mercy of miscreants. In the last 24 hours, as many as 10 vehicles have been set ablaze across the City, resulting in losses accounting to several lakhs and unnecessary harm to the public. Fresh violence was reported from Ghansi Bazar, Darab Gunj Gally in Madannapet, Mehdipatnam and Moosa Nagar in Chaderghat last night. It all started in Darab Gunj Gally where a group of unidentified people burnt a bike. Over the next few minutes, a DCM

The masked men then beat him up, poured petrol on the auto and escaped as Fareed’s only source of income went up in flames. In Moosa Nagar, businessman Jeetender woke up late on Sunday night to the smell of his Jeep burning. As in the previous incidents, miscreants doused his Jeep in petrol before setting it on fire. A case has been registered with the Chaderghat police and an investigation is underway. Panic spread as these incidents came to light, especially in the Old City which has been tense over the weekend. Several cases have been booked, but the police are yet to find if all these incidents were planned by the same group of people.

lory Margaret, a lecturer at a private college committed suicide by hanging at her in-laws house in Lalaguda, Secunderabad. Dowry harassment is believed to be the reason for her taking this extreme step. According to details, the victim, 30-year-old Glory Margaret was married to Peter since 2006. They have two daughters. At the time of their marriage, her parents gave `2 lakh in cash, seven tolas of gold and various other articles as dowry. Since the last few months, it is alleged that her husband and in-laws were harassing her mentally and physically for more dowry. It is also being said that she was being harassed as her inlaws and her husband wanted a male child and she had given birth to two daughters. At that time, Glory had filed a police

complaint. According to her brother Salmon, later on they decided to stay together again. Within a few days the harassment and demand for more dowry began again. She is believed to have been so vexed by the situation that she took this extreme step.

Since the last few months, her husband and in-laws had been harassing her for more dowry. Her brother further mentioned that he got to know that she had committed suicide only when she didn’t answer when he repeatedly tried calling her. Salmon found her hanging from the ceiling at her house. He then filed a police complaint against her in-laws and husband in the Lalaguda Police Station.

he Election Commission (EC) must be given credit for its disciplined and continuous effort in updating its voter rolls. In view of the coming General Elections, the EC’s preparations have helped the general public in applying for new voter ID cards as well as in making changes in previous registrations. Gone are the days when waiting for a voter ID card was a tedious task. Now, with a simple e-mail or a phone call, officials are prompt in their response to help the general public, say citizens. The EC’s website www.ceoandhra.nic.in particularly has been very helpful, say citizens. As joint CEO to the government, Fahim Saberi, said, “The website is being preferred for enrolment and changes in voter ID cards by the general public over the weekend registration booths set up in and around the City. The fact that the DIY interface of the website is far more helpful than filling out forms or pasting pictures has greatly helped the public.” Saberi also asserts that the many discrepancies in name, address and age have come up due to contract-based data operators working on enrolment forms, which had been outsourced. Citizens, too, have realised that the website is reliable as there is always a printout guarantee that could help them if and when problems occured. For example, P Chitti Naidu (name changed on request) had applied for a voter ID in 2010 at Erramanzil at the election commission’s booth setup. Despite filling out the necessary forms and providing all document

Citizens prefer to use the website for enrolment... The fact is that the DIY interface of the website is far more helpful than filling out forms or pasting pictures. Fahim Saberi Joint CEO to the govt proof, he was made to wait for two years, all the while making frequent trips to the local municipal office and the e-seva

centres where the voter ID cards were being distributed. “I had made so many trips to these offices that the officers soon got used to my face. However, they could not trace the fate of my long overdue voter card,” said Naidu. On learning about the fast response action of the Election Commission, he shot off a mail to the Election Commissioner and was promptly assisted by the local joint authority. “Within two days, I was able to trace my card with its EPIC number and collected it from the e-seva centre. I never expected this from a governing body,” he said. Most people struggling to get a voter ID card have vowed to trust the digital platform

rather than queuing up at the poll registration booths. Currently, the website has a hit rate of 1,25,000 so far and more than 80 per cent of the traffic is for online enrolments. Officials say that applicants are constantly updated by email regarding any discrepancies in their voter ID forms and that they have received many compliments for their service. “The problem all these years was that people relied only on manually filling out forms while the dataentry operators kept piling up trouble for us because of their contract-basis work. The website seems to have instilled faith in the people about the Election Commission,” said an official from the EC.

The plans of the TRS to attract rival party MLAs into its fold has faced a roadblock due to Congress-TRS merger rumours.

INKESHAF AHMED Ahmed.m@postnoon.com

T

he grand plans of the TRS to attract rival party leaders into its fold could come a cropper. The reason is that leaders of various political parties from Telangana region seem to be wary of joining the TRS, the champion of separate Telangana. It may be emphasised here that TRS party chief K Chandrasekhara Rao, in a recent speech claimed that several party leaders, especially sitting MPs and MLAs of rival political par-

ties were in touch with him to join his party. He also said that he would only accommodate a select group of leaders as there was not much scope to accommodate all leaders. When Postnoon did a survey, many interesting issues came to the fore. The most important reason for the indifference towards the TRS was the reports of its imminent merger with the Congress in case of UPA government’s Telangana announcement. Many leaders, especially those belonging to the Congress and TDP strongly feel that even if they join the TRS, they would

be left in the lurch if TRS merged with the Congress. A senior TDP leader and MLA told Postnoon on the condition of anonymity that it would be difficult for the TRS to accommodate them by giving party tickets in the next General Elections as it already had strong contenders. Another Congress MLA expressed similar views. Interestingly, the reports of TRS merger with the Congress are also forcing some leaders to postpone their decision to join the TRS. “There was alot of pressure on me to join the TRS from my supporters. I eventually took a call. But, the reports of its merger forced me to rethink,” he said.

T-CONGRESS MPS CAUTIOUS

Many T-Congress MPs, who had prepared themselves to join TRS , are now on the back foot due to the same reason. One MP, while speaking to Postnoon reasoned that no purpose would be served if they join the TRS if KCR eventually decided to merge with the Congress. The Congress has 12 MPs in Telangana. Of these, 8 MPs are raising their voice demanding the high command to concede to a separate T-state.

ases of suicide of married women get a lot of press. But the plight of the married Indian man, who is largely seen as a villain in cases of marital abuse, often goes unnoticed. The Indian law has gone to great lengths to amend itself to aid the empowerment of women. But where there is good, there is usually misuse. Cases of wives abusing the law to get back at their other halves have been on the rise. The Save Indian Family Foundation chose to highlight this issue on the occasion of International Men’s Day (November 19). According to the foundation, only three per cent cases slapped against men are genuine. But even the other 97 per

cent are not spared as they usually spend close to two years, and most of their savings, on trying to clear their names of wrongdoing. “Men usually face taunts and are isolated after cases of abuse are filed against them. Few can bear the pain that this brings and some resort to extreme measures like ending their lives,” said Shah Ali, convenor of the Hyderabad chapter. It is believed that every nine minutes, a married man commits suicide in India, and this figure has increased in recent years. According to the National Crime Records bureau (MHA), in 2010, the total number of suicides were 1,34,599, while that of married men was 61,453. Since the last fifteen years it has only doubled, even as we have embraced globalisation.

The meeting will focus on the issues required to be tackled by the party to pose itself as a strong alternative to TRS when it comes to a T-state. Viewing life through a lens

Hyderabad’s Harsha Vadlamani’s Galli.in is just the platform Indian photographers needed all this while. Sadly there’s been nothing more than a sedate response from the City itself. ELIZABETH SOUMYA elizabeth.s@postnoon.com

E

veryone’s a photographer these days. That’s the worrisome conclusion one reaches going by the spurt in display of talent on social media albums. So when Harsha Vadlamani says there aren’t that many online fora for Indian photographers to display their work, it seems a bit unreal. What’s more, he goes on to point out that even though images are everywhere, there are still images we haven’t seen. There are places in India that have seldom been documented. Hyderabad-based Vadlamani is the founder of Galli.in. An excellent photo gallery of sorts that curates ‘visual narratives’ or photo essays on India and is steadily finding acclaim. A techiturned photographer, Vadlamani was looking for good social documentary by Indian photographers online. Surprised that there was no one platform where on could find such works, he decided to create one. Galli.in debuted in Aug 2011, with the photo-essay Orissa by Srinivas Guruganti. The set of 20 images captures the changing lives across the mining belts in Orissa over a decade. There’s an excessive stream of images on travel, but when it comes to social documenting, it isn’t just as easy as owning an SLR and heading to exotic

3

places. “What’s very important in the photo-essays we feature is the story itself,” he says. Story telling through images requires a different set of skills than clicking them. This is perhaps the reason why 70 per cent of the submissions to Galli.in are rejected.

There’s a lack of social documentary photographers in the City and very little about AP visually documented, Harsha adds. He makes it clear that ‘just pretty pictures’ won’t cut it. “We look for essays where the photographer has documented something over a period of time and

has a genuine interest that comes through in the pictures, other times the topic and place matter a lot,” Vadlamani says. Visiting a place for a short period of time and coming back with a large number of pictures is not a photo-essay. In It’s Time to Tell the Truth by Balaji Maheshwar, the most recent essay on the site, the photographer has explored the firecracker industry in Sivakasi and brought images we seldom get to see. Among other examples he sites, is the work by Vivek Singh’s Inside Fractured Territories that looks at the conflicts in the North-East, a region we never see images from simply because no one clicks them, he says. When curating a photo-essay choosing a submission is only the first step. There’s a lot of discussion and interaction with the

photographer when editing, where the photos and their sequence is decided. A lot of work goes into compiling the text and captions. When Galli.in started a year ago, Vadlamani would approach photographers whose work he liked and invite them to show their work on the site. Today, with a lot more submissions he’s put a cap on the essays to two each month. One

goes up on the first of the month and the other on the 16th. Galli.in has received great response from photographers from across the country but the City where he’s based, Hyderabad seems sedate he admits. There’s a lack of social documentary photographers in the City and very little about AP has been visually documented, he adds.

At the event, students from different colleges and universities across Hyderabad such as IIT, Bits-Pilani, IIT, JNU, Osmania will be pitted against each other over three days to see which team can come up with the best start-up idea. The programme is still in the planning stage and if they decide to go ahead with it, it will be held in January.

Winners 1. Lebtop: Team lead: Nikhil Kulkarni Provides a platform to teach and learn English 2. Habited: Team lead: Divya Sornaraja A mobile app to gamify fitness 3. DigiFlap: Raghu Prodduturi. An innovative product to help consumers in retail stores to easily locate products Special Mention: SaveAChild: Team lead: Venkannareddy Yamnur, Crowdsources location information of underprivileged kids. Venkanna is a class X student who came from Dharwad, Karnataka because he was interested in startups. He hopes to build a world changing startup soon.

Friday evening and concluded on Sunday. According to the organisers, the crowd was a little less than usual as a lot of students were caught up with exams. That however, did not

affect the quality of ideas presented, said the organisers. Mentors who visited the venue on the last two days were impressed by the ideas presented and felt that they were better than some presented in the earlier event. The team behind Lebtop were judged winners on the final day and now the team has to make a YouTube video which will be uploaded on the Startup Global Battle YouTube channel and put up for vote. Out of these 130 startups the top 15 will again have to face a panel of VCs and angel investors who will decide the ultimate winner. Since Lebtop was made with rural India in mind it is made to work with basic feature phones that don’t have an internet connection. However, on the advice of one of the mentors the team is also working on a web interface so as to target people in other countries where English is not commonly spoken.

Rich food, no exercise spike diabetes rate in children A majority of children surveyed suffer from emotional distress and prefer to spend time on their electronic gadgets instead of playing. POSTNOON NEWS feedback@postnoon.com

H

ere is a reminder of a fact that is now quite known. Cut down on your highcalorie food and walk rather than motoring down for every flimsy excuse if you want to escape being a victim of diabetes, which is assuming epidemic proportions in India, warns the latest survey by premier trade body, Assocham. Lack of physical activity coupled with overeating and rising intake of high-calorie food are leading to massive growth of diabetes amid children in urban India, according to a just-concluded survey undertaken by Assocham in the wake of World Diabetes Day on November 14. The Social Development Foundation (ASDF) had conducted a survey in September and October of 500 children in the age group of 10-15 years spread over 10 urban centres: Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai and Pune, to ascertain the prevalence of diabetes in urban Indian children.

THE FINDINGS

Over 40 per cent of children at urban centres do not exercise at all, almost half of the children tend to indulge in binge eating and many of them are overweight or obese. Majority of the children surveyed suffer from emotional distress and stay glued to their gadgets/electronics items like television, computer, laptops, tablets, iPods, videogames and other portable digital media players, leading to a lack of physical movement, ability to concentrate and reduced time spent with family. Another significant highlight of the survey is that the trend is evident in both the sexes almost equally. “The survey results authenticate the prevalence of diabetes in urban India as a major portion of our population remains at a high risk mainly due to genetic and hereditary factors, urbanisation and sedentary lifestyles,” said DS Rawat, secretary-general of Assocham. “Ever-evolving snacking trends

Only around 50 respondents said that they have any regulations at home vis-à-vis eating habits and time spent on gadgets.

are leading to rise in consumption of junk, and packaged food items are another significant reason behind the growth in the number of diabetic urban children. This is not just limited to diabetes but it can also lead to other chronic health problems of obesity, depression, high levels of blood pressure and cholesterol, hypertension and others in later stages,” said Rawat. Around 200 children (40 per cent) said they do not play any outdoor games as they get tired during the school hours, thus preferring to stick to their gadgets and electronic devices and interact with their friends via phone calls, SMS and chat messengers. Around 70 per cent of the total respondents said they consume only junk food — burgers, French fries, deep-fried chips, other packaged food articles, candy bars, ice creams, aerated drinks and others. Most of these food items are usually made from refined wheat flour (maida) and are high in fats and salt. With physical inactivity, this sort of consumption leads to accumulation of belly fat, which is directly linked to metabolic dysfunction, insulin resistance and diabetes. Some of the respondents even conceded that they received poor grades in schools as they are not able to pay attention and tend to stay absent from school due to frequent health problems. Only around 50 respondents said that they have any regulations at home vis-à-vis eating habits and time spent on gadgets. (Compiled by PK Surendran)

S

ome times the secret behind establishing a successful business may evolve when one is free from a regular 9to-5 job and having the knack to turn a problem into a business opportunity. That is exactly what K Bhaskar Gupta, a chemical engineer with an MBA degree, did. Despite holding a senior position for over seven years with one of India’s most prestigious companies, he decided to branch out by himself and set up a new business. Bhaskar started Synpure Labs in June 2008 and the idea for his business came from a problem that he faced while he was heading the purchase department at Dr Reddy’s generic pharma division. Talking about his entrepreneurial journey, Bhaskar says, “Around the time I decided to branch out, many colleagues had been setting up their own businesses and were successful. I thought, ‘If those peo-

Synpure exports its products to USA, Europe, Malaysia and Thailand. Almost 20 per cent of the revenues generated is from exports. ple can make it, why can’t I?’ I was heading the purchase department and there are a few items that are difficult to find in the market for supporting R&D. The business idea was to start and synthesise those chemical impurities (R&D support material) and supply it to pharmaceutical companies. However, it was a difficult decision to make.” On the importance of these impurities, he says, “If any company wants to prove that their medicine does not have any toxic impurity, they should have a pure impurity to match the properties with the medicine they manufacture in the impurity profiling. Synpure does the research and development and

writes the synthetic scheme and produces these impurities on order. Although, the requirement may not be in large volumes, impurity profiling is very crucial step, especially to sell medicines in regulated markets like Europe and USA.” The company also sources innovator samples from across the world including Australia, Europe, and USA. These samples are used to launch equivalent formulated products in USA or elsewhere in the world. For instance, if an Indian company comes with an equivalent formulation of the drug that exists in USA, it has to have the original drug of the American manufacturer for product development and to launch it in the US. Talking about investments, he says, “We raised `2.5 crore with help from family and friends. We faced several bureaucratic hurdles initially and it took us 18 months to start the production operations. However, the company was soon successful and we have had a growth rate of 15-20 per cent in terms of revenues. This year the investors were able to recover what they had initially invested. There are only five companies dealing with impurities and two companies dealing with innovator samples, so the competition is not much.” Synpure is also successfully exporting its products to USA, Europe, Malaysia and Thailand. Almost 20 per cent of the `3 crore revenues generated last fiscal is from exports. The 25-employee company is aiming to become a `10 crore company by 2015-2016.

BERLUSCONI'S ACCOUNTANT HELD HOSTAGE FOR A NIGHT

Silvio Berlusconi's accountant was taken hostage in his home by armed intruders who demanded a 35 million euro ransom from the former Italian premier, Italy's police said on Monday. Police have arrested six people accused of plotting to take Giuseppe Spinelli, one of Berlusconi's closest allies, and his wife Anna hostage.

GANGNAM STYLE

The staying power of Gangnam While many believe Gangnam Style will ultimately prove to be a one-hit wonder, the song has shown surprising staying power and an ability to penetrate international corridors of power. GILES HEWITT Agence France-Presse SEOUL: President Obama, the mayor of London, China’s top dissident artist and Madonna — every time someone signals the death of “Gangnam Style” up pops another high-profile figure to keep the phenomenon alive. In the four months since the music video by South Korean rapper Psy went viral on YouTube, it has been namechecked and imitated by an impressive roster of global notables from world leaders to sports stars and business tycoons. And the public has joined in with tens of thousands turning out for giant flashmob performances of Psy’s horse-riding dance in cities like Paris and Rome. While many believe Gangnam Style will ultimately prove to be a one-hit wonder, the song has shown surprising staying power and an unlikely ability to penetrate international corridors of power. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called it a force for world peace. On the morning of the US presidential election, Barack Obama told a local radio station that he was confident he could match Psy’s dance moves. “But I’m not sure that the inauguration ball is the appropriate time to break that out. Maybe do it privately for Michelle,” he said. British Prime Minister David Cameron and London Mayor Boris Johnson performed a joint Gangnam Style dance spectacular for their wives in September during a private gathering in the premier’s country retreat Chequers. Johnson went on to reference the event in his keynote speech to the ruling conservative party’s annual conference. If politicians have appropriated the song in an effort to boost their populist credentials, others have used it to drive home an anti-establishment message — most notably renowned Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei. Banned from traveling abroad, Ai posted a Gangnam Style dance parody on YouTube,

during which he brandished a set of handcuffs in a clear reference to Beijing’s efforts to silence his outspoken views. The video was removed by China’s Internet censors, prompting the Indian-born British sculptor Anish Kapoor to gather 250 art world luminaries at his London studio this week to film their own Gangnam video in support of Ai. “Yes, it is desperately silly, but what is the paradigm of the artist? The artist does stupid things with serious intent,” Kapoor said. Silly or not, Psy’s influence has spread to some of the world’s most famous academic institutions. Earlier this month, the 34year-old rapper was invited to follow the likes of Ronald Reagan and the Dalai Lama in addressing the 189-year-old Oxford Union club at Oxford University.

This file picture taken on October 23 shows South Korean singer Psy, whose real name is Park Jae-sang, performing a dance-step with United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon just before their meeting at the UN headquarters in New York. And a Gangnam Style video parody made by students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, featured cameos by Eric Lander, one of the principle leaders of the Human Genome Project, and Noam Chomsky. “Oppan Chomsky Style,” the 83-year-old Chomsky deadpanned into the camera while sipping a cup of coffee. For some, it has all become a bit too much. “Can anyone kill Gangnam Style?” Britain’s Guardian asked. After Google chairman Eric Schmidt gave a awkward horse-riding performance during a visit to Seoul, Time declared the Gangnam Style craze “officially over” — but that was in September. If anything, Psy has since gone from strength to strength — gaining the ultimate showbiz accolade this week by performing a mash-up of Gangnam Style with pop icon Madonna during her concert at New York.

It may be recalled that the girl’s post on Facebook denounced the virtual shutdown of the city following Bal Thackeray’s death. The police have booked “unidentified persons” for rioting and damaging property. Around 7pm on Sunday, a few police officials visited her uncle Dr Abdul Dhadha’s hospital. Abdul, however, has been in Mahabaleshwar for a fortnight, said Sudhir Gupta, her advocate. “Officials who went to the hospital said Shaheen had posted something against the Shiv Sena chief and that she should remove it. Around 8.30pm, 30 to 40 unidentified persons vandalised the hospital, causing losses to the tune of `15 lakh to 20 lakh.”

He was speaking after BJP leader Balbir Punj’s assertion on Monday that his party welcomes Mamata Banerjee’s plan to move the no-trust motion.

NEWS BRIEFS Man kills father after argument IMPHAL: A man killed his father after an argument on family matters in Imphal, the police said today. S Khoihi was beaten to death last evening by his son S Raju when he entered the house at Uchiwa Awang Leikai in a drunken state. Raju was discussing family matters with his mother at that time. They argued with each other when the son beat the former with a cane, police said adding that the son later hit the father with an iron rod. The father died on the spot, police said adding that the son has been arrested.

Punj, however, said the BJP was keeping all options open in its endeavour to take the Manmohan Singh government to task for coming up with reforms hurting the sentiments of the common man. On the question of joining hands with the BJP on the notrust motion, Roy told PTI, “We know that by ourselves we do not have the numbers. That is why our party chief Mamata

Banerjee has appealed to all parties to support our motion.” Roy said Banerjee had announced the party’s decision to move the motion on the issue of FDI in retail and other “antipeople decisions” of the UPA government. Meanwhile, TMC’s all-India general secretary Mukul Roy denied that Banerjee had called up Opposition leader Sushma Swaraj seeking BJP’s support.

Pennsylvania teenager slept for 64 days from Thanksgiving into January — her longest sleeping episode yet, reported the Daily Mail. Nicole Delien, 17, struggles with a rare sleep disorder called Kleine-Levine, or ‘Sleeping Beauty Syndrome’.

Nicole Delien, 17, struggles with a rare sleep disorder called Kleine-Levine, or ‘Sleeping Beauty Syndrome’. During her sleep spells she will wake up in a confused state for small periods of time to eat and go to the bathroom and then fall back to sleep. Nicole’s mother, Vicki, says her daughter will sleep 18 to 19 hours a day, and when she eventually wakes up to eat she is in a ‘sleepwalking state which she doesn’t remember’, KDKA in Pittsburgh recently reported. The Delien family also appeared on Jeff Probst’s syndicated talk show this week to make sure other families become aware of the rare disorder. Vicki Delien told reporters that it was very frustrating trying to get a diagnosis for her daughter. She said it took several hospital trips to figure out what’s been afflicting her. In addition to excessive sleeping, symptoms include disorientation, hallucination, childlike behaviour, binge-eating and periods of hyper-sexuality when awake, according to an Oxford Journals report. That report says the disorder predominately affects young males. The cause of Kleine-Levin Syndrome is unknown.

hey may not whine — because kids whine — competitors took on electric shocks, ice baths and plenty of mud in a new craze sweeping the nation. Following success across the pond, people have been fighting to sign up for this gruelling 12mile obstacle course as it made its way to the UK for the first time this year, reported the Daily Mail. Designed by Special Forces burly men and women, working in teams, took on the Tough Mudder event at the Cholmondeley Estate in Cholmondeley, Cheshire. It is the third event of its kind on these shores following success at events in May in the South East and Midlands and later in July in Scotland. Billed as the ultimate test of strength, stamina, determination and camaraderie, people brave enough to sign up to the event make their way though a host of eye-watering obstacles. From an ice bath labelled the ‘Arctic Enema’ to ‘Kiss of Mud 2’ and the ‘Electroshock Therapy’ the course is certainly not for the faint-hearted.

But Tough Mudders are certainly warned about what to expect beforehand, as they are led through a pledge. Not only do they have to vow not to whine — because kids whine — but they must promise to overcome all fears, put teamwork and camaraderie before a course time and understand that Tough Mudder is not a race but a challenge. And challenged they are, as these pictures show, with many of them needing a helping hand to cross the finish line.

But it is not all pain and dirt, with plenty of other unusual elements to the bizarre event. With prizes for best and worst costumes, least clothing and ‘most likely to have been in the Village People’ there were plenty of wacky fancy dress attempts. And it was not just attire that turned the eye. With free head-shaves available on site there were also prizes dished out for toughest mullet and toughest mohawk - while anyone bearing a Tough Mudder tattoo was also in for an

award. So if you love nothing more than trawling through mud, ice baths and taking on the odd electric shock while dressed like a head shaven Santa Claus, fear not. Because the next Tough Mudder is just around the corner, with six more events planned in the UK for next year. First port of call will be Northampton in May, before tours in London South, Scotland, Yorkshire, the South West and North West before the end of the year.

Chaplin’s hat, cane go for $62k LOS ANGELES: The bowler hat and cane that accented Charlie Chaplin’s costume in Little Tramp has sold for $62,500 at an auction in Los Angeles. Bonhams said the silent film star’s trademark accessories were sold Sunday at an auction of Hollywood mementos.

Other notable items included a handwritten letter from John Lennon with a nude drawing of him and Yoko Ono. It went for $25,000. A set of original photographs of Marilyn Monroe sold for $21,250 and a painting by Frank Sinatra went for $10,625.

Peeping Tom is the first pervert to be banned from every McDonald’s in England and Wales — after he was caught spying on two women in the restaurant’s toilets. Sukhbir Singh, 32, sneaked into the ladies’ toilets at a busy branch of the fast food giant in Birmingham city centre where he hid in the cubicles and watched the women in February this year, reported the Daily Mail. He was caught after being disturbed by a customer who then alerted the staff. Singh fled but CCTV operators tracked him from the restaurant and his image was passed on to police officers. Police arrested Singh, from Handsworth,

Birmingham, 10 days later after he was recognised at junction 7 of the M6 motorway. He was also charged with another offence in the restaurant chain against another victim on February 3. On Friday, he was given an antisocial behaviour order banning him from women’s changing rooms, toilets and all 1,200 McDonald’s branches in England and Wales.

Israel mulls over truce plan

FIRST OF SORTS

Israel would like a 24- to 48-hour truce to be observed so that the two sides could work out a lasting ceasefire.

JERUSALEM: Israeli leaders on Tuesday discussed an Egyptian plan for a truce with Gaza’s ruling Hamas, reports said, before a mission by the UN chief to Jerusalem and as the toll from Israeli raids on Gaza rose over 100. The early morning talks came as the UN Security Council hit deadlock on a statement on the conflict with the United States saying it opposed any action that undermines efforts to reach a ceasefire. Ministers in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s inner circle — the Forum of Nine — held lengthy talks over whether to agree to a ceasefire or expand the air and naval campaign into a ground operation, but no decision was announced, Israeli public radio reported. It said that Israel would like a 24 to 48-hour truce to be observed so that the two sides could work out a lasting ceasefire, with Israel possibly looking into easing its embargo on the Gaza Strip. One Israeli television channel suggested Netanyahu was inclined to approve a truce, with a halt to the hostilities seen within 24 hours. As the violence raged for a sixth day on Monday, with Israeli strikes killing 32 Palestinians, a missile killed a senior Islamic Jihad militant in a Gaza City tower housing Palestinian and international media, the second time in as many days it has been targeted. With UN chief Ban Ki-moon in Cairo pushing for a ceasefire, Hamas chief Khaled Meshaal said his movement was committed to efforts to secure a truce,

The Anglican Church of Southern Africa has ordained the first woman bishop on the African continent, officials said on Monday, in a historic move that comes as the Church of England in London prepares to vote on whether to allow female bishops. The consecration of Ellinah Wamukoya, originally from the diocese of Swaziland, took place in the country’s economic capital Manzini on Saturday in front of more than 3,000 worshippers.

In New York, US ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice said there had to be an agreed ceasefire between the Israelis and Hamas for any halt in violence to be “meaningful or sustainable.” But Russia warned that unless an Arab-proposed statement calling for Israel-Hamas hostilities to end was agreed by Tuesday morning it would press

for a vote on the full council resolution — setting up a potential veto clash with the United States. The United States, Britain, France and Germany all had problems with a text proposed by Arab nations last Thursday because it made no mention of rocket fire from Palestinian militants in Gaza, diplomats said. Terrified and desperate, many Gaza families have fled their homes, some seeking

haven in the south, which has seen fewer strikes.Mourners flocked to the funeral of nine members of one family killed in a weekend strike on a Gaza City home. As the overall death toll in Gaza hit 109, with the 32 killed on Monday making it the bloodiest day so far, the Israeli army said that 42 rockets had struck Israel and another 19 had been intercepted by the Iron Dome defence system. Passion for Penacho SIM SIM WISSGOTT feedback@postnoon.com

S

teeped in myth and legend, the “Penacho,” a feather headdress supposedly worn by Aztec emperor Moctezuma II, continues to stir up passion in Austria and Mexico as it goes on display again after a years-long restoration. Some say it was brought to Europe by Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes, others that it was used by an Aztec high priest. In any case, the vibrant greenand-blue headpiece — the only one of its kind still in existence — remains at the centre of a tugof-war between Mexico, which wants to bring it home, and Austria, which argues it is too fragile to be transported. “This is only the beginning,” Alfonso de Maria y Campos, director of Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), said this week at a presentation of the restored Penacho in Vienna. “The initial thought behind this project continues to be the exhibition of this piece in Mexico,” he added. First documented in 1596 in the collection of Tyrolean archduke Ferdinand II, the Penacho is one of the few surviving examples of ancient Mexican feather art, experts say. And despite being almost 500 years old, it has retained its brilliant colours. Some 450 iridescent green tail feathers from the rare quetzal bird were knotted together to form the 1.5-metre (five-foot) wide Penacho, embellished with gold adornments and smaller turquoise, red and brown feathers. This method of assembly means the headdress could easily fall apart during transportation or if exposed to vibrations.

HIGH-FLYING THOUGHTS

Chimps and orangutans may experience midlife crises, say scientists. Radical and often ill-advised changes in lifestyle have been pinned as the reasons for it. It’s sort of a solace that we are not alone in this. Perhaps we could learn from our ‘forefathers’ how to deal with it.

ith both hands holding the basket of human excrement on her head, widowed grandmother Kela walks through a stream of sewage, up a mound of waste and then dumps the filth while cursing. “Nobody even pays us a decent wage!” she spits as she rakes mud and rubbish over her newly deposited pile, one of several she drops in the course of her working day cleaning toilets as a “manual scavenger” in India. She and around 20 other women in the village of Nekpur, 60 kilometres (40 miles) from New Delhi but a world away from its relative wealth, remove the contents of toilets daily using just their hands and a plastic shovel. Already illegal under a largely ineffective 1993 law, the government has promised to have another go at stamping out the practice with new legislation set to come up in the last parliament session of the year, which opens this week. Kela and her fellow scavengers in Nekpur live in a handful of mud houses, isolated from the rest of the village. They are considered low-caste even by fellow low-caste Hindus and are seen as the ultimate “untouchables”.

Discrimination has eased recently but still they are prevented from keeping livestock and are sometimes stopped from walking near powerful people. “My life has passed doing this,” Kela, a withered illiterate woman thought to be around 60, explained to AFP. She started after she married — she thinks she was aged 11 or 12, but can’t be sure — and is in no doubt about the undignified nature of her profession. “The smell goes to your head. I often feel sick. After all, we are also humans.” One of the homes she visited was Parveen’s, a widowed mother whose small brick construction and concrete yard is home to nine people and three generations. The toilet — a brick wall around a hole above a pit containing ash and dirt — is emptied from an access point out-

side on the street, where Kela scoops out the “night soil” into her wicker basket. “We feel bad about it,” says Parveen when asked about the women’s plight. “We pity these women and sometimes we try to help them.” She says she pays Kela one piece of bread (a chapati) a day and five kilogrammes of food grains a month. No money is exchanged, as is the case for other scavengers.

A MEDIEVAL THROWBACK

Nekpur, a few hours bumpy drive from Delhi, is the sort of rural backwater found in Northern India where the estimated 200,000 scavengers nationwide continue to toil. Swarms of mosquitoes hover above open drains as naked or barely clothed children play on the streets. Buffaloes outnumber vehicles in the streets.

The new legislation modifies the 1993 law — which criminalised the scavengers — raising the prospect of an end to a practice seen as a medieval throwback with no place in modernising India. The new law would prohibit the building of non-flushing toilets that must be emptied by hand, and prescribes a one-year jail term and/or a fine of up to `50,000 rupees ($900) for anyone who employs a manual scavenger. It also requires local authorities to monitor the implementation of the law and sets out tough sanctions if municipalities employ sewer cleaners without protective gear and equipment. Men wearing only underpants and equipped with just a hoe and a wooden bar can still be found in some towns heading into the stinky depths of septic tanks and sewers. The national railways — described recently as “the largest open toilet in the world” by a federal minister — are also often picked clean by the scavengers. Bindeshwar Pathak, of the sanitation charity Sulabh International, says the legislation could prove helpful, but that the final test will be on the ground. “In India there are many laws that have not helped so far, like (the one to prevent) dowry. Dowry cases are still going on, there is child labour,” he said. “It needs to go both ways: on one hand, the legislation, the other is implementation.”

ndia is the world’s largest democracy. This is sort of a chant for many of us despite knowing the many issues that mar the image of a country that holds such a title. In such a nation, it goes without saying, freedom of speech is sacrosanct. We may voice our views. That is how this grand idea works. The constitution ensures that. However, we have become a nation where our rights are suppressed by the clout of some, dead or alive. “People like Thackeray take birth and die daily and people should not observe bandhs”: this is all a 21-year-old posted on Facebook and a friend who agreed with it ‘liked’ it. A mob of 2,000 Shiv Sainiks ransacked the poor girl’s uncle’s hospital. Nine of the barbarians, we learn, have been arrested for vandalism, but before any such move, the cops had arrested the poor girls, took them to court, where they were first sentenced to jail and later released on bail. We can understand the cronies and dunces in khaki acting stupidly, but the revered and learned personages of a court! That is beyond reason. Think about it: all this fracas over a man who whipped up regional fervour, sowed seeds of hatred in the minds of the people for their own countrymen from other states.

ow was your day at work today? The answer that most are bound to give is ‘the usual, boring stuff’, few will venture to give an answer which sounds like, ‘it was fun’. If you have been doing the same job for weeks, months and years, you know in advance how your day is going to turn out to be in general and hence you are already prepared to face the day. Often the question that has plagued youngsters, fresh into the workforce is, “Why the whole education charade? When all you end up with is a job that pays peanuts, a boss that is a slave driver and a job that allows you no room for creativity.” Swapna Shekhani, an employee at a multi-national company asked herself the same question only to understand that the solution lay in her hands. "My long working hours, pressure to meet the targets and practically no social life made me feel my job was the worst. All I ever interacted with was the keyboard, a bunch of papers, the peon and my boss. So one day I thought long about it and hit upon a plan. My co-workers were also going through the same phase, so we decided to make a social life after work, we also now play online games against each other just to keep the boredom out. The little fifteen minute breaks, where we meet up, discuss the plan for the night is what makes me going and I realised that it is true for most of us at work." Unless you work in the gaming industry or are the front door receptionist, playing games are not allowed in most work spaces. But what if you make your work

Take the snooze OUT OF WORK

It's the routine nature of our jobs that invites boredom to set in and that's how most end up feeling bored out of their skulls at work. Well, here are some reasons that might help you make peace with the situation. “Every customer I attend to, I pretend is one of the characters in games I love to play. I call it my 'Game plan'.” Vijay Rao CRE a game? Vijay Rao, a customer relations executive, does exactly this to get through the day. “I found this novel way of tackling customers and it's fun. Every customer I attend to I pretend is one of the characters in games I love to play and every successful call or meeting earns me points and also motivates me to do better. I call it my 'Game plan'.” Thinking of ways of keeping boredom out is also quite a chore. Ankit Poddar, an employee with an ad agency in the City says, “My present job is something which I love, my previous job was with ad words and com-

piling them. I was bored to death with the same routine every day. Staring at the computer day after day, I was fed up and to end my boredom I changed my job.” Most of us also have unreasonably high expectations out of our work life, taming them a bit will do wonders for this attitude. Finding the little things like meeting coworkers, learning something new, pigging out at the canteen or randomly looking for attractive co-workers can also lessen the boredom pangs quite a bit.

HEALTH RISKS AT WORK

Carpal tunnel syndrome isn't just pain or soreness from too much typing. It's the sharp pain caused when a nerve that runs through the forearm is compressed by swollen ligaments and bones in the wrist. Before you're forced to treat carpal tunnel with acupuncture, drugs or even surgery, stretching and other exercises may help release tension in the wrist.

Bad posture at your desk goes beyond the obvious slouching. Sitting up straight but curving your back too much can be a cause of lowerback pain as well. Getting regular exercise including abdominal strengthening activities should relieve some of the pressure on your lower back. Having too fat a wallet in your back pocket can be a bad thing for the back as well.

n his teens, Rahul had idolised his favourite cine hero — his style, acting and perfect physique. Within no time he started visiting a gym and exercising. But then in his hurry to gain that perfect physique he took the support of steroids. Seven years later, he was married and hoping to start a family. After numerous failed attempts to have children it was revealed that he was infertile. Further investigations revealed that the overuse of anabolic steroids played a role in this. Dr Pramati Reddy, consultant physician at Apollo Hospital, Jubilee Hills says, “Steroids are of various kinds. Anabolic steroids are mostly used by men to increase their muscle mass. They may also be advised for medical reasons such as delayed puberty and testosterone deficiency.”

If not taken in the required quantity and without a doctor’s prescription, they may be a cause for concern. Talking about the side effects in men Dr Pramathi Reddy says, “In the long term its side effects could be testicular atrophy, loss of sexual interest, increase of LDA cholesterol, sudden cardiac deaths, blood pressure problems, liver damage etc. Men may also develop gynaecomastia (enlargement of breasts).” Dr

Record your foods quickly and easily by searching the database or by scanning their barcodes. Track your calories as well as other major nutrients.

Kwashiorkor is a type of protein energy malnutrition. If a child uses up energy from carbohydrates and lipids, their body may begin to use protein for energy. The body breaks down protein into energy that can be used. They then do not have enough protein for other functions in their bodies. Children from aged 1-4 years usually get this but rarely adults and older children get it. It is common in places like Africa.

Reddy mentions that most of the problems can be reversed although some are irreversible. On the other hand, problems may also occur if someone who is taking anabolic steroids for a long time stops taking them suddenly.

MALE FERTILITY

Various studies have linked low fertility and sperm count among men who have been on anabolic steroids for a long time. This is because the steroids affect the production of the male sexual hormone testosterone. Many times, stopping the steroids has

DID YOU KNOW? You’re covered in bacteria About 32 million bacteria call every inch of your skin home. Germaphobes don’t need to worry however, as a majority of these are entirely harmless and some are even helpful in maintaining a healthy body.

Dr Minhaj Nasirabadi, consultant psychiatrist at Apollo Hospital says, “Apart from the physical problems, steroids can have various psychiatric sideeffects such as depression and psychotic behaviour (hallucination, aggressive behaviour, suicidal tendencies and general abnormal behaviour).” Dr Minhaj says that patients who are suffering from depression and have even turned psychotic as a side effect of steroids have been seen in the City. He recounts the case of his patient who took anabolic steroids for many years (he had taken the steroids as he wanted to the perfect body) and ultimately committed suicide. When it comes to helping someone suffering from depression as a result of steroids Dr Minhaj says that medication and stopping the steroid use can help the patient regain their original state of mind. But on the other hand once a person turns psychotic reversing the side-effects may be a difficult task.

STEROID ABUSE

Anabolic steroids are the most commonly abused steroids. Like most medicines these too are available over the counter (in western countries they are strictly prescription drugs) although their intake should be based on a prescription. In most cases, the problems due to anabolic steroid abuse are not detected till the side-effects occur.

PAEDIATRICS SYDNEY: Teenagers born prematurely may suffer from brain development problems due to low levels of cortisol — a hormone that plays a critical role in memory and learning abilities, according to an Australian study. University of Adelaide researchers have demonstrated that teenagers born prematurely, that is before the 37th week, may suffer from such deficiencies. The research, conducted by Julia Pitcher and Michael Ridding from the University of Adelaide’s Robinson Institute, shows reduced ‘plasticity’, the brain’s ability to change and adapt when it learns or experiences something new, in teen-agers born premature, the Journal of Neuroscience reports. “Pre-term teens also had low levels of cortisol in their saliva, which was highly predictive of this reduced brain responsiveness,” says Pitcher, according to an Adelaide statement. “People often associate increased cortisol with stress but cortisol fluctuates up and down normally over each 24-hour period and this plays a critical role in learning, the consolidation of new knowledge into memory and the later retrieval of those memories,” adds Julia Pitcher. “The growth of the brain is rapid between 20 and 37 weeks gestation and being born even mildly pre-term appears to subtly but significantly alter brain microstructure, neural connectivity and neurochemistry,” says Julia Pitcher. Researchers used a noninvasive magnetic brain stimulation technique, inducing responses from the brain to obtain a measure of its plasticity. “This might be important for the development of a possible therapy to overcome the neuroplasticity problem,” Julia Pitcher says.

RESEARCH

‘Low level cortisol retards learning’ University of Adelaide researchers have demonstrated that such deficiencies have been seen in children born prematurely (before the 37th week).

Problems preemies face n

Apnea of prematurity: Because their brains and lungs are not fully developed, apnea, or periods where breathing stops, occurs in 85 per cent of babies born before 34 weeks. Apnea may come with periods of bradycardia, where the heart slows down.

n Jaundice: It affects about half of term babies and up to 80 per cent of preemies, and is treated with special lights. Premature infants are at risk for a rapid rise in bilirubin, and are treated more often than term babies to prevent kernicterus, a compli-

cation where high levels of bilirubin damage the brain. n Respiratory distress syndrome: Respiratory distress affects as many as 43 per cent of premature babies born between 30 and 32 weeks, and almost all babies born before that time. Full-term babies make surfactant, a chemical that helps keep the lungs inflated. Without enough surfactant, premature babies’ lungs don’t inflate well. n Reflux: Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, affects up to half of premature babies.

In gastroesophageal reflux, stomach contents come back up the esophagus and the baby will spit up. n IVH: Premature babies, especially those born before 30 weeks, have fragile blood vessels in their brains. If those vessels break, an intraventricular haemorrhage (IVH) may occur. This bleeding into the brain, which occurs in up to 14 per cent of infants born between 30 and 32 weeks and 36 per cent of infants born before 26 weeks, may be mild or severe. Source: www.about.com

Dengue vaccine to be tested in India NEW DELHI: French health care giant Sanofi Pasteur will soon test a vaccine against dengue fever in India amid concerns about the increasingly global spread of the disease, reports said Monday. The vaccine will be tried on about 120 adults followed by trials on children before it can be made available internationally as soon as 2015, a newspaper said. “Sites for the vaccine’s final trials will stretch from Thailand to India as this vaccine has to work on populations across countries. We will test it in India soon,” Sanofi’s CEO Christopher Viehbacher was quoted. Dengue causes a flu-like illness for most victims but one of its strains can cause life-threatening internal bleeding. There is no licensed vaccine to protect against dengue. Efforts to develop one have been complicated by the fact that there are four different strains, all of which may circulate in an outbreak zone. Dengue also seems to be exclusive to humans, which means it is impossible to test vaccines on lab animals first. Jean Lang, head of the vaccine’s research and development programme, said Sanofi had been asked to conduct “phase two safety trials” in India by the national drug controller. “It will help us get a licence to market the vaccine in India faster if it has been tested on the Indian population and is found safe and effective,” Lang told the paper. According to the UN’s World Health Organisation, between 50 and 100 million dengue infections occur each year in more than 100 countries. In 1970 the disease was endemic in just nine countries. AFP

Cricket ears as model for hearing aids WASHINGTON: New advances in hearing aids and medical imaging may be possible thanks to a tiny insect from the South American jungle. The South American bush cricket (katydid), has some of the smallest ears of any creature. But despite a physical structure that is very different from

human ears, their ears function in a similar way to human ears. Mammalian ears use a threepart process — the eardrum collects the sound, the middle ear converts it from air-born noise into liquid-born vibrations, and a structure called the cochlea analyses the frequency. It had been well-known that

the crickets had eardrum-like apparatuses on their two forelegs. But scientists were unclear as to how these tympana connected with each other and with the sensory receptors to allow the cricket to actually hear. In the new study, published in US journal “Science,” researchers reveal the discovery

of a microscopic organ that acts as a “middle ear” for the crickets. “The ears of this bush cricket are teaching us that complex hearing mechanisms can take place in very small ears. As such we are learning how evolution has come up with very small, efficient and sophisticated microphones,” said Daniel Robert. AFP

KAKURO

How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or

column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7,

4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

RULES BREACHED

Lakers down Rockets Bryant had 11 points in the first quarter as the Lakers started quickly and led 40-29 heading into the second. LOS ANGELES: Mike D’Antoni’s coaching debut was put on hold but the Los Angeles Lakers won anyway on Sunday, beating the Houston Rockets 119-108 behind a triple double performance from superstar Kobe Bryant (dunking above). D’Antoni was hoping to make his Lakers head coaching debut Sunday night, but decided hours before the game that he was not quite ready to return. He is recovering from knee replacement surgery earlier this month and is still on crutches. Bryant finished with 22 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists and Dwight Howard had 28 points and 13 rebounds in the victory for Los Angeles, which recorded a season-high point total. “We shot the ball fairly well,” Bryant said. “We seemed to make the right decisions. “We got to keep playing

He is now planning on being ready to coach his first game Tuesday at home against Brooklyn. “I am hoping but it is dayto-day,” D’Antoni said Sunday. “I am not going to compromise any kind of energy problems I might have on the bench.

“Bernie (Bickerstaff) does a great job and I have terrific faith in him so hopefully Tuesday is a go.” The Lakers have gone 4-1 under interim head coach Bickerstaff. Los Angeles began the year 1-4, which resulted in the sacking of Mike Brown. The Lakers then passed on a chance to bring back 11-time NBA champion Phil Jackson after they hired D’Antoni on Monday last week. Los Angeles have also been without Canadian Steve Nash, who won a pair of NBA MVPs running D’Antoni’s up-tempo offence with Phoenix. Nash missed his eighth consecutive game with a broken leg. Chandler Parsons scored 24 points to lead the Rockets, who have lost six of their last eight games. “It’s wonderful,” Bickerstaff said of the victory. AFP

Oz jockey banned for ten months Champion Australian jockey Damien Oliver bet on a horse in a race he participated in and lost. MELBOURNE: Champion jockey Damien Oliver (below) was on Tuesday banned from racing for 10 months after blaming his marriage breakdown for a decision to put money on a rival horse that won a race in which he was riding. The Australian two-time Melbourne Cup winner was suspended for eight months over the betting scandal and was slapped with another two-month ban for using a mobile phone in the jockeys’ room prior to the race, which is prohibited. “I want to apologise to the racing industry. I’m deeply sorry for my actions,” Oliver said in brief comments after the Racing Victoria hearing.

The betting charge related to a race two years ago at Moonee Valley in Melbourne in which Oliver, 40, breached the rules by betting Aus$10,000 (US$10,400) via a third party on eventual winner and favourite Miss Octopussy. Oliver’s horse, second favourite Europa Point, finished sixth. During the hearing, Oliver reportedly broke down in tears as he admitted the offences, telling of psychological stress brought on by a temporary split from his wife and a battle with alcohol. “I felt despondent and had lost my belief in my ability as a jockey,” Oliver told the hearing, ABC radio reported. NEW ZEALAND’S TOUR OF SRI LANKA

Kiwis labelled clueless NZ media labelled the Kiwis ‘clueless’ after they crashed to a 10-wicket defeat against SL. WELLINGTON: New Zealand media on Tuesday labelled the Black Caps "clueless" and "awful" after they crashed to a 10-wicket defeat at the hands of Sri Lanka in the first Test in Galle. "Black Caps selfdestruct again", said the headline in the Dominion Post after New Zealand entered the third day with hopes of a win only to be mesmerised by spinner Rangana Herath and bowled out for just 118. "It's one of the unex-

plained mysteries of New Zealand cricket that when the Test side gets a sniff of a chance, it regularly selfdestructs in its second turn at bat," the newspaper said. It said the performance was exhibit A in a file marked "Awful New Zealand third-innings batting collapses", while the New Zealand Herald said the team was "so clueless it defies description". Cricket writer Richard Boock said the defeat marked the first time New Zealand had lost five

PAKISTAN’S TOUR OF INDIA Looking forward: Ajmal KARACHI: Top Pakistani spinner Saeed Ajmal can't wait to roll his arm over in the the muchanticipated tour of India next month as the late-bloomer has played just once before on the Indian soil. "I started my international career late and I have got a chance to play just one match against India in their own backyard the 2011 World Cup semi final at Mohali," Ajmal told PTI. "That is why I am eagerly looking forward to this tour as it will be a challenge bowling to the Indian batsmen in their own backyard," he said. Ajmal, who began his international career at the age of 31,

was among the probables when Pakistan last toured India in 2007 but couldn't make the final squad for any format of the game. "I was disappointed than because every cricketer wants to play a proper series in India and prove his worth," he said. "I didn't get a chance to play a full series in India because of the suspension of bilateral relations since 2007 but now finally I am getting my chance and it is exciting for me," he added. Ajmal, who is the top bowler in the ICC ODI rankings and also among the top three in Test and T20 rankings, has taken 122 wickets in 23 Tests, 109 wickets in 71 ODIs and another 69 in T20s.

straight Tests since the 1950s, adding: "It seems as bad as it's been for a long, long time. The team seems to have got into the habit of losing and they're down on confidence," Boock told Radio New Zealand. "They're hollow players right now, shells of cricketers. Once the ball starts turning, particularly turning both ways, they look all at sea." The Herald said there were some positives in the performances of Tim Southee and Trent Boult.

INDIA VS ENGLAND Pujara for shorter format: Gavaskar NEW DELHI: Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar today said that young Chiteshwar Pujara has got his basics right and the Saurashtra batsman could be tried in limited overs of cricket. "Something that certainly can be given a try, because he has got the basics right. If you have the basics right then expanding your shot-making capabilities is not so much of a problem," Gavaskar said when asked about Pujara scoring at a faster rate than Virender Sehwag during India's chase on the final day of the first Test against England here today. "You have the licence to play lot more shots in the limited overs cricket than in Test cricket. It is just a matter of confidence. He has been in the IPL teams... he hasn't really got an opening. Even there he bats down the order, where he has got to come in and start hitting the ball in the air soon enough. That is not something that he is comfortable with," he told NDTV. "What he showed by hitting the ball down the ground and getting boundaries, he can also score at a fast pace." PTI

SOUTH AFRICA IN AUSTRALIA

‘Watson must be fully fit’

ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA: Former skipper Ricky Ponting weighed into the Shane Watson fitness debate Tuesday saying the Australian vice-captain cannot play in the second Test against South Africa if he's not fully fit. Ponting said the injuryprone all-rounder would put too much pressure on his teammates if he played against the Proteas carrying a calf muscle strain. A decision was expected to be made on Wednesday or the morning of Thursday's match with Test rookie Rob Quiney on standby to retain his number

Proteas plan short balls to stop Clarke

ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA: Morne Morkel said Monday he expected a short ball barrage aimed at Michael Clarke in this week's second Test at Adelaide in a bid to stop the Australian captain's run spree. Morkel said better use of the rising ball, and denying Clarke scoring singles, were part of South Africa's planning for Australia's in-form leader ahead of Thursday's Test. Morkel says the Proteas had to be smarter in their approach to Clarke after his unbeaten double-century in the first Test. AFP

Watson completed a number of running exercises but was not at full stretch in his workout at the Adelaide Oval. Ponting said Watson was looking good in the nets but was restricted from doing anything else in the field except slips catching. "It doesn't matter what we think as teammates -- he will have a certain lot of criteria he will have to pass," Ponting told reporters. AFP

Alternator failures a worry: Red Bull Red Bull admit their alternator failure, suffered by Webber, the US GP is a worry ahead of the Brazil GP. GORDON HOWARD Agence France-Presse AUSTIN, TEXAS: Red Bull team chief Christian Horner admits their latest alternator failure, suffered by Australian Mark Webber, in Sunday’s United States Grand Prix is a worry ahead of the drivers’ title showdown in Brazil next weekend. Webber’s alternator failure was the team’s third this season and came in the race in which they celebrated clinching a third consecutive constructors’ championship. Webber was forced to retire from third place on lap 17 and the disappointment not only put a damper on their celebrations in Texas, but also forced Renault to announce on Monday that they will supply their

Ferrari tactics leave rivals unruffled

BERLIN: German auto giant Daimler confirmed Monday that it had taken full control of the Mercedes F1 team after buying up a 40 percent share from the Abu Dhabi-based fund Aabar, AFP’s subsidiary SID reported. Aabar joined forces with Daimler in 2009 but had since decided to stop funding the Mercedes team. AIRCEL CHENNAI OPEN Cilic, Stanislas to participate The confirmation has ensured that the event will have one of the strongest fields in its history. CHENNAI: Two-time former singles champion and world No.15 Marin Cilic and Stanislas Wawrinka are set to take part in the 18th Aircel Chennai Open, to be held here from December 31 to January 6. The confirmation from these two top-20 players along with participation from World No.6 Tomas Berdych and World No.9 Janko Tipsarevic have ensured that the tournament will have one of the strongest fields in its history. Cilic, the 6ft 6inch Croatian, won the singles titles here in

FOR THE LONG RUN

Brailsford eyes Rio 2016

GLASGOW: Dave Brailsford, the man behind the British cycling’s team run of gold medal success at the Beijing and London Olympics, has vowed to continue in his post until the 2016 Games in Rio. As well as being British Cycling’s performance director, the 48-year-old Brailsford is also the principal of Team Sky, in which capacity he oversaw Bradley Wiggins becoming the first British winner of the Tour de France earlier this year. But Brailsford, who helped guide the British cycling team to eight golds in London, insisted he still had Olympic ambitions. “I’m not sure that I was ever

going to let go and walk away (completely),” said Brailsford, following the Track World Cup in Glasgow.

“In my mind I like to think that there was a safety valve where you can just go ‘Okay, let’s look at where we are going’. “We might structure it slightly differently, we might think about longer-term succession planning. “I’d like to think we’re building something which is sustainable; coming up to Rio if I just disappeared off sideways nobody would really notice and it would just carry on.” Brailsford added enthusiasm was key to his role, saying: “If I wake up and I’m not motivated, I’m not excited by it, I will step aside, because somebody else should be doing it.”

DOPING TROUBLE

WADA invigorated by USADA probe WADA reviewed a draft code that would slap a four-year ban on anyone convicted of using anabolic steroids, human growth hormone etc. JUDI REVER Agence France-Presse MONTREAL: The World AntiDoping Agency (WADA) has sought to redefine its role as a sports watchdog in the wake of robust allegations of a doping conspiracy involving cyclist Lance Armstrong and has proposed doubling bans for athletes caught using performance-enhancing drugs. WADA reviewed a draft code that would slap a fouryear ban on anyone convicted of using anabolic steroids, human growth hormone and masking agents or trafficking in these substances. The code, which would also give the antidoping agency powers of investigation, will be finalized next year and take effect in ‘15. “There is a desire to increase penalties, to increase sanctions,” WADA Chairman John Fahey said, after a twoday meeting. “And if you look at that the four-year (penalty), it certainly invariably will take out somebody competing at the next Olympics once it’s imposed on someone. It covers some of the things that certainly the Olympic movement believed ought to have been covered with their own rule in the

past.” In the past WADA has come under fire, notably by the BOA, whose chairman accused the anti-doping agency of colossal failure in cracking down on cheating. In November 2011, BOA Chairman Colin Moynihan

If you look at that the four-year (penalty), it certainly invariably will take out somebody competing at the next Olympics once it’s imposed on someone. John Fahey WADA Chairman claimed that WADA’s role should be reviewed. “Regrettably, despite spending hundreds of millions of dollars in the 10 years since its creation, WADA has been unable to achieve its own, wellintentioned, objectives,” Moynihan said.

‘Derby romp can spark Euro charge’ Wenger is putting his faith in the restorative properties of the derby triumph.

PARIS: Manchester City’s first tilt at Champions League glory ended in a heartbreaking group stage exit a year ago having been drawn in a tough group — though the club then went on to lift the Premier League. Many observers will feel lightning is likely to strike twice as the signs are this season could prove a virtual re-run of last. City pipped neighbours United to the Premier League post in May and now lead their local rivals by a point after a weekend steamroller-

ing of Aston Villa. Sadly for Roberto Mancini’s men, Wednesday’s opponents Real Madrid are not Villa. Mourinho’s side come to Manchester knowing they cannot risk leaving empty-handed as the ninetime champions seek to close the Group D door firmly shut on a City side who have taken just two points from their opening four fixtures. It could have been so different for Mancini’s side — they were on the brink of victory in the Bernabeu before Karim Benzema and Ronaldo

(above) overturned a 2-1 deficit in the last five minutes. Instead of pulling off a win which would have left them a point clear of the Spaniards, City instead trail Mourinho’s side by five points and group leaders Dortmund by six to stare another premature elimination in the face. Mancini concedes that the odds are stacked against City but after wiping the floor with Villa he knows the club are in the global spotlight on Wednesday.

DAVID BECKHAM

To play last Galaxy game LOS ANGELES: Football legend David Beckham says he will play his final game with the Los Angeles Galaxy when the Major League Soccer club hosts the league championship early next month. The 37-year-old former England captain has spent the past six seasons with the Galaxy, leading Los Angeles to an MLS Cup title last season when they defeated the Houston Dynamo 1-0. Beckham and the Galaxy go for their second consecutive crown when they face the Dynamo in a

repeat of last year’s final on December 1 at the Home Depot Center. Beckham said the game would be his last for the team as he hopes to move on and eventually

become a part-owner of an MLS team in the future. “I’ve had an incredibly special time playing for the LA Galaxy. However, I wanted to experience one last challenge before the end of my playing career,” Beckham said in a statement released by the team. “I don’t see this as the end of my relationship with the league as my ambition is to be part of the ownership structure in the future.” Beckham did not go into specifics about what he meant by “one last challenge”. LONDON: Arsene Wenger expects Arsenal to build on their derby demolition of Tottenham by marching towards the last 16 of the Champions League with a win in their crucial clash against Montpellier on Wednesday. Wenger’s side routed arch rivals Tottenham 5-2 at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday to lift the gloom around the north London club following a disappointing run of one win in their previous four Premier League matches. The dominant manner of Arsenal’s victory was a perfectly-timed confidence boost because the Gunners can’t afford a slip-up against Montpellier.

Arsenal lie second in Group B, one point behind Schalke, and failure to beat the French champions could leave Wenger’s men facing a tricky mustwin tie at third placed Olympiakos in their final match. But, with Schalke hosting Olympiakos, victories for Arsenal and the German club this week would guarantee their places in the knockout stages. Wenger hopes that is the scenario that plays out at the Emirates on Wednesday. “The result will help to rebuild belief completely again,” Wenger said. “There is something special in this team and I am happy that will come out when they play with complete confidence.
