Women police recruitment in full swing U Srinivas

Home Department also has decided to give promotions to the women police officials. The process of recruitment is on for appointing about 3,500 officials. Every district in the State now has a women’s police station. But the presence of women police still remains nominal. A lot of women’s issues are still to be addressed across the State, according to the latest statistics.

t last, home minister Sabitha Indra Reddy wielded her influence for the benefit of women folk. It is time the number of women in the police department is set to increase. The State government finally accorded green signal to the Home department to increase the number of women in the police force. In fact, the file has been in circulation since 2009. As a result, the number of women police personnel is set to go up from 3,500 to 7,500. When compared to other states, the number of women police here is very small. In Hyderabad, there is a women police station in Begumpet. But Tamil Nadu has a women’s battalion. In 2009, Sabitha Indra

Reddy recommended that at least one fifth of the police force must be women. But it took almost three years for the government to decide on recruitment of women. This is being done as part of the Chief Minister’s job mela programme. Apart from the recruitment, the

Now, Shanker scare A Saye Sekhar saye@postnoon.com

POLITICS

H

as the Congress committed a political hara-kiri by dropping the trump card, P Shanker Rao, from the State Cabinet? As the future unfolds, Shanker Rao will surely turn out to be an appendix for the ruling party. The maverick Congress leader, who chose to remain at loggerheads even with his father-in-law G Venkataswamy, proved time and again that he could go to any extent to embarrass anybody. It’s in that process that he was incited to take on YS Jagan through missile missive dashed off to the State High Court that ultimately was admitted as a public interest litigation. Now, the Jagan group wants to pay the Congress back in the same coin and that too with the same weapon. Knowledgeable sources indicated that ‘someone’ from the Jagan camp established a contact with Shanker Rao and is luring him. What’s the takeaway? Shanker Rao would go on a ‘yatra’ to explain to people how he was used to malign Jagan. This would put the Congress in a tight spot. But some senior leaders in the

Jagan camp cautioned that ‘someone’ to be careful. They reportedly felt that he could be “left to his fate.” Meanwhile, Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy’s overtures to cleanse the Cabinet met with a roadblock thrice. An angered Kiran Kumar is using his ‘prerogative’ to scuttle the ‘over-speed’

of his bête noire Botsa Satyanarayana who is frequently unleashing Chiranjeevi on the chief minister. Chiranjeevi wanted plum portfolios like Power and Commercial Taxes for his nominees — C Ramachandraiah and Ganta Srinivasa Rao. He tried to negotiate with the chief minister who did not budge even an inch on the demand saying such move would anger the senior Cabinet ministers. Kiran reportedly roped in Botsa to convince Chiranjeevi on the issue. But, an irked Chiranjeevi seemed to have expressed “extreme displeasure” and left the Chief Minister’s camp office. “We have become the fulcrum for Kiran to survive the no-confidence motion and this is what we are getting,” he told his confidantes. “Should we reconsider our options?” he reportedly asked a senior PRP functionary. A Congress MLA loyal to the chief minister said: “Once they are merged with the Congress, they would obviously lose their identity. Why are they trying to maintain their unique position? It is detrimental to them only.” In a bid to silence the dissent, Kiran hosted a breakfast to the new ministers and apparently cooled them down for now. Heat from T leaders and MLCs is just an add on.

Budget boost for Old City road widening GHMC Md Inkeshaf Ahmed ahmed.m@postnoon.com

T

he draft budget proposed by Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Mayor Mohd Majid Hussain during the special standing committee meeting of the corporation on Thursday indeed had the Majlis-e-Ittehaadul Muslimeen (MIM) mark on it. The face of Old City, which is the bastion of MIM, will change as the draft budget is designed to solve the plaguing problem of residents of this area. The most important problem among this is the narrow roads and streets of old city, which have become a cause of concern for the residents. The corporation had a whopping `175 crore for the road widening programme. Among these funds, a

majority would be used to widen the narrow roads. The mayor has also confirmed this to Postnoon, a day after making his dream budget public. “”The residents of old city are facing a lot of problems with narrow roads and streets and it has become part of their life. Our party president Asaduddin Owaisi and party floor leader in the Assembly Akbaruddin Owaisi also wished this should be solved with immediate effect.“I will see that the roads are widened in a year’s time. The draft budget also consists of a huge outlay for construction of bridges and foot over bridge The authorities have already decided to construct two of these bridges in Old City area,” he said. On the revenue expected from Professional and Motor Vehicle Tax, he said they would get these funds before the beginning of the next financial year. “The finance department had given its approval for the release of professional tax revenue to the corporation.”

Dense fog takes City by surprise Postnoon news

M

orning walkers in Hyderabad were in for a pleasant surprise when a dense fog enveloped the City and the air had a musty tang. Though visibility was not bad, many vehicles on the streets were running with fog lamps on. Weathermen said the cold wave conditions that prevailed in the North India for the past few days had passed off but it got revived last night. The sudden rise in humidity, 94 per cent at 8.30 am, had resulted in the fog. As North India is in the grip of thick fog, many flights and trains went off schedule. All flights from Delhi to Hyderabad were delayed by more than an hour.

t’s now celebration time for the Paturi family. Family and friends of Jonathan came, hugged each other, laughed, and thanked heavens for getting all the City boys back. At Paturi’s grandmother’s home in Chilkalguda, it was like a mela in full swing. Scores of neighbours and friends had assembled. John fell into the arms of his grandma who was waiting for him. “I was bought up here in this house with my grandmum. Most of my friends are from this colony and all were worried about me. Hence as soon as I reached Hyderabad I came here first,” said Jonathan to the well wishers around. From Chilkalguda several cars led to Moulali, his home, for a bigger comeback party. Jonathan’s family had a party planned for him and his buddy Ramesh Kumar. Ramesh, is a Concordia crew member from Tamil Nadu. Indeed, the party began at the airport itself and continued till early morning. “I am very proud of my brother and he is indeed an inspiration. Today all his friends and my friends are here we have just opened a champagne bottle and the party will continue. Very soon we are going to host a big prayer meeting and a party to celebrate his homecoming. This is just the beginning we have several surprises planned for my brother,” said Jordan P, his brother, in a very jovial mood, happiness unconcealed. Neighbours of Jonathan were equally worried as their family and were anxiously waiting for his arrival. As soon as he came they all rushed home to greet and bless him. “We have heard of incidents like this in the past but until it happens with someone very close us, we did don’t realise the pain and trauma. It is not easy to stay in peace when your beloved one faces such a disastrous situation,” said Abhikesh G, his childhood friend.

missed my son’s call. Then again at 5.30am he called and very casually he dropped the news, “Daddy, my ship sank but don’t worry I am safe.” My wife and I sat in shock. For a long time everything seemed blank, we didn’t know how to react. After a while came another call from him, and this time he updated us about what was happening. The situa-

tion was grim. Water was freezing cold and he said he had saved many lives by then.” “John said he’d lost his passport, documents and everything else but thankfully not his cell phone, which proved to be the most important asset. Though he said he was fine we were really worried and tensed, this grew even more when his phone

switched off due to low battery.” “My son told me all other countries’ embassies were there except the Indian embassy. He asked me to get touch with them and do something. It was difficult for me to contact them, because of the weekend and the festival. I called former Union minister Bandaru Dattatreya and Anjan Kumar Yadav. They immediately

BUT DON’T WORRY’ revived memories of the Titanic, and families of City boys on board the stricken returned safely. Sudeshna Koka captures the moment of ecstasy PICS: N SHIVA KUMAR

All OK, says Captain, and ship was sinking!

I

ndeed it was a Black Friday for me. We were in the last leg of our journey; on 14th we were to dock at the Italy port, Jonathan Paturi, third chef of Costa Concordia. Just like the Titanic, the Costa Concordia was a luxury liner. We were hosting 4,200 holidayers. And just like the Titanic, we were serving dinner to our guests when disaster struck. It was around 9.30 pm and I was in the kitchen making pasta when suddenly I saw my cooking bowl tilting to one side. I thought it was rough weather, which is routine. However, when the ship started rolling violently I realised it was sinking. Fifteen minutes later there was a complete black out. Our engine room on Deck B was hit by water. After a while a few emergency lights were switched on and I saw everything was upside down. I knew we were sinking. I called my cousin and told him, “I’ll call you if I’m alive.” Tears

welled up in my eyes because thought I’d never see my loved ones again. I fought down the panic rising within me and stared to work. We were waiting for orders from the captain. But he kept announcing that everything was alright. Maybe he didn’t want passengers to panic. Instead of waiting for the orders we began our emergency rescue programme. I still don’t understand why the captain did not call for an emergency. We got the passengers onto

the 26 life boats and took them to Giglio, an island that was just 50 meters away. These boats have a capacity of 150 but there were more than 200 on each. At the time my only thought was to save as many as possible. I did not care about anything else. Till morning we were freezing on that island, the temperature was 2 degrees Celsius. We were drenched and had no idea what to do. Late in the morning the military and Red Cross came with food, water, blankets and all the other basic requirements.

They came home and kissed the ground

except ours spoke to my son and said they would do something. But all efforts went in vain as first two days Indian embassy did nothing.” After two days of inaction, Indian embassy woke up and did the formalities to get the shipwrecked crew home. “But we underwent hell, especially after my son called his cousin and said the situation was

like the Titanic story. ‘I don’t know when or whether I will call you again,’ he told his cousin. And that set our mind ablaze.” Marya now mages to bring out a smile which she had forgotten for a few days. Talking about his son’s passion for cooking he said that he is an amazing baker. “He has always been a daring and believed in following his dreams.

S

ix Hyderabadis out of the 202 Indians rescued from ship were flown to Hyderabad’s Indira Gandhi International airport in an Emirates flight. As soon as they entered the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport the first thing they did was to bow down and kiss their Mother Land. Our six national heroes, Jonathan Paturi, Srikanth Yadav, Suresh C, Srinivas Reddy, Ramesh Kumar and Shashidar G must be saluted for their brave act of saving 4,600 people aboard the Costa Concordia. “I am extremely happy to be back. I saved more than 300

people and this was indeed a life changing experience,” said Shashidar G, 25, a crew member. Friends and family were waiting with garlands and sweets. “We have grown up with him and the incident shocked us. He told us everything was in control, but there was no way

we could relax till we saw him ourselves,” said Akhila B, Jonathan’s neighbour. Understandably, their return brought a wave of relief and happiness. “I can’t express my joy. It’s like my son has been reborn and what’s more he saved hundreds of passengers,” said Marya Paturi, Jonathan’s mother with tears. Ramesh Kumar, 21, perhaps the youngest crew member said, “When the lights went off I realised something was wrong. The captain must’ve realised too because he turned the ship to head towards the port. I’m happy I could save so many lives and I am happy to be back.”

sk a parent which of their children is dearer. Ask a husband who is more important, his wife or his unborn child? As harsh as these questions may sound, the response can be even more difficult. The recent conjoined Veena-Vaani issue in Hyderabad has racked up a debate. The operation to separate them could cost one of the sisters her life. The deliberation is whether a barter of life for life is ethical or is it inevitable. Explaining about the tricky situa-

tion, Dr Divya T Sudarshan, gynaecologist and obstetrician, Happy Women Clinic says, “The complications depend on the type of conjoined twins; certain cases of twins can be easily separated and in certain cases the chances of mortality are much higher.”

Taking a decision According to Dr Satish Ghanta, neonatologist, developmental paediatrician, paediatric intensivist and director for intensive care services, Little Stars Hospitals, it is a very complex situation. When a situation arises that only one baby can be saved, a number of tests like a brain scan and a MR venogram are conducted and then a decision is taken.”

It’s a tough situation How does someone decide which of the two lives to save? “It’s not just about having two babies but about having healthy babies. If the situation arises, the final decision is in the hands of the parents,” Dr Divya says. She mentions that in the course of the delivery if it is realised that a child can be born with certain anomalies the parents are informed. The law gives the doctor the right to abort the child but nothing is done without the parents’ consent.

ehavioural and learning difficulties in kids is a common occurrence these days. And tackling these are just as challenging for teachers as it is for parents. Often shaping young minds is challenging in the sense that a lot of care needs to be taken in terms of approach. It is towards this end that Akkshaya Foundation is organising a two day workshop on “Educating the Educators” on January 20 and 21. The workshop will emphasise on the use of the neuro linguistic programming technique (NLP), a methodology in which a person’s perception about past incidents can be effectively altered to facilitate a brighter and better future. In this workshop, teachers will be educated on the same so that they can contribute significantly in moulding the character and personality of the student as well as the nutritional needs of the student. This workshop outlines common tips, tricks and strategies to maintain focus in the classroom. The workshop is being offered for school teachers and lecturers in the state at a nominal registration fees and will be held at SAP Hotel, Ameerpet. Akkshaya Foundation is a non governmental organisation working in the state of Andhra Pradesh for the last 10 years with the vision to promote “Let food be your medicine”. The organisation under the guidance of Suneetha Sapur, its director, has conducted school nutrition programmes earlier to create awareness on nutrition, healthy eating habits and self-development.

Corporate colleges bat for Eamcet

T

he corporate colleges and coaching centres are lobbying for the continuance of Eamcet for obvious reasons. Eamcet preparation is included as part of the package in the Intermediate education by them. If Eamcet goes, the corporate colleges’ business comes to a grinding halt. Braving criticism from a section of academics, the government has implemented the 25 per cent weightage for Intermediate marks. But when Sridhar Babu was the education minister, he could not enhance the weightage to Intermediate marks to 50 per cent. The education portfolio now lies with deputy chief minister

Damodar C Raja Narasimha. KC Reddy, former chairman of the AP State Council of Higher Education, said that students and colleges were concentrating only on Eamcet and ignoring the Intermediate exams. There are allegations that the new system has actually benefited urban students who can afford corporate college education. The corporate lobby has already ‘impressed’ upon the ministers for continuing the 25 per cent weightage. When the State has a one-is-to-three ration of engineering seats to aspirant students, there is no need for an entrance examination, deems the lobby.

Orissa mantri quits over rape cover-up BHUBANESWAR: Orissa Agriculture Minister Pradeep Maharathy on Thursday submitted his resignation to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik after the Opposition accused him of protecting culprits in a gangrape case. “I submitted the resignation on moral grounds,” Maharathy said after putting in his papers. A 19-year-old woman was allegedly gangraped on Novembr 28 last year by some people near her village Arjunagoda, about 10 kms from the state capital Bhubaneswar. The site of the crime comes under Pipili assembly constituency that Maharathy represents. “The opposition parties are trying to malign the image of our government and the image of the chief minister. I resigned to protect their image and to ensure

free and fair investigation,” Maharathy said, adding that neither he nor any of his partymen were involved in the crime. “I am ready to face any probe,” the five-time lawmaker from Pipili constituency said. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said he has received the resignation letter and has forwarded it to Governor MC Bhandare for acceptance. However, the opposition par-

ties said the resignation was a “drama” and that the chief minister must resign as he holds the home portfolio. “Does he (Patnaik) not have any moral responsibility? The resignation is a drama,” state Congress president Niranjan Patnaik told reporters. He also demanded a probe by the CBI. State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Jual Oram too demanded a CBI probe. “The chief minister has no moral right to continue. He should quit,” he said. The woman is admitted to a hospital in Cuttack, and is in coma. Her family alleges that the rapists were the same people who had assaulted her in 2008 and against whom she had put up a determined fight in court in a molestation case. IANS

India’s External Affairs Minister SM Krishna secured a firm commitment from Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa on devolution of powers to the Northern Province for a lasting political settlement with the dominant Tamil minority. “Rajapaksa gave me a categorical assurance that he was committed to implement the 13th Amendment of the Constitution for empowering the Tamil-dominant northern region,” Krishna said on Thursday on way back from a four-day hectic trip to the picturesque island nation. Terming the visit fruitful, a visibly relaxed Krishna said he was more than satisfied with the blossoming of the relationship

Till then, we will look forward to the implementation of the assurances given to the Sri Lankan people and during the talks we had,” Krishna asserted onboard the Embraer jet of the Indian Air Force (IAF) that ferried him to and from Sri Lanka. Noting that the visit gave him an opportunity to interact with the top Sri Lankan leadership on a number of bilateral issues, including the political settlement with the Tamils, Krishna said the frank-and-free discussions had allayed his apprehensions over their commitment to implement the 13th Amendment. Cong expells 11 more rebels DEHRA DUN: Congress today expelled 11 more party leaders on the charge of anti-party activities ahead of the January 30 assembly polls in Uttarakhand. The party had yesterday expelled 16 leaders, Congress spokesman Surendra Kumar today said. The expelled Congress leaders include Jot Singh Bist and Mantri Prasad Naithani. “All these 32 leaders are contesting elections as rebel candidates from different seats in the state,” Kumar said. After failing to stem the revolt, both ruling BJP and Congress in Uttarakhand have started expelling rebellious leaders. BJP has so far expelled 22 leaders. PTI

‘Need to water down anti-dowry law’ NEW DELHI: Amid allegation of misuse of the law, the Law Commission today recommended watering down the anti-dowry law to make it less stringent by allowing the woman involved in the case to withdraw the case with the permission of the court provided she is not under any pressure. In its latest recommendation made to the Law Ministry, the Commission said the offence should be allowed to be made compoundable provided the woman is facing no external pressure. Compoundable offences are those which can be compromised by the parties to the dis-

pute. The permission of the court is not necessary. When an offence is compounded, the party, who has been aggrieved by the offence, is compensated for his grievance. The Commission, headed by Justice P V Reddy, has recommended to the government to make Section 498-A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which deals with harassment for dowry and cruelty to a woman in her matrimonial home, a compoundable offence. This means that those who would be booked in cases under this section would find it easier to get bail. “...it is proposed to add sub-

section (2A) to Section 320 CrPC. The proposed provision will ensure that the offer to compound the offence is voluntary and free from pressures and the wife has not been subjected to ill-treatment subsequent to the offer of compounding. Incidentally, it underscores the need for the court playing an active role while dealing with the application for compounding the offence under Section 498-A,” the report said. In the wake of growing complaints about the misuse of anti-dowry laws by women, the Law Commission had studied the possibility of making sec-

tion 498-A of the Indian Penal Code a bailable offence for the relatives of the husband. Currently, the law mandates that any accused will be arrested and jailed during the pendency of the case. Under the section, offenders, including the husband or his family members, are liable for imprisonment without even an investigation. The offence is non-bailable, non-compoundable and cognizable on a complaint made to the police officer by the victim (wife) or by designated relatives. Furthermore, the section does not include any provision for a compromise. PTI

Editorials A DAW(N) OF democracy beckons

A

ung San Suu Kyi has registered herself as a candidate for a Parliament seat in a by-election slated for April 1. Her National League for Democracy had boycotted the last elections calling it stagemanaged by the junta. However, a series of genuine reforms by the ‘civilian’ government, including release of political prisoners, have prompted a rethink from Suu Kyi — who spent most of the last two decades in prison or under house arrest. Myanmar under the military regime was synonymous with human rights abuses, torture and brutal suppression of all kinds of dissent. With dictatorships of the Arab world biting dust, the current government is moving in the right direction by stepping aside in a phased manner to avoid loss of face. Let us hope that when Myanmar walks into a new dawn of true democracy it will be Daw Aung San Suu Kyi who leads from the front. Her father Aung San, architect of Burmese independence and founder of the modern military, will be smiling down at his daughter from the stars.

t’s so corrupt it makes our bureaucracy look positively angelic, but you’ve got to love an organisation that makes it mandatory to sell beer at football games. That, indeed, was the decision taken by Blatter’s Boys when they ‘ordered’ Brazil to make sure grog was available during the World Cup. Of course someone’s making money, but who cares.

riyanka Gandhi took political circles by surprise when she announced that she is willing to expand her role beyond the family-held constituency of Rae Bareli and assume more responsibilities, if asked to do so by the family and the party. There has been a lot of uncertainty over who will call the shots in Congress in the absence of Sonia Gandhi — whose health and extent of recovery from a recent surgery is still under a cloud of secrecy. Rahul Gandhi, projected by the Congress as the family scion and prime minister in waiting, is yet to progress beyond party strengthening and assume the role of a national leader. His latest and much-hyped Bihar campaign to oust the Nitish Kumar government not only failed but failed at a grand scale resulting in total humiliation to the party. Of late, there have been several voices questioning his effectiveness to deliver at the polling booth despite all the publicity advantage provided by hut-hopping and tirades against non-UPA state governments. Post-independence, except brief spells, the Congress has always found refuge in woman leaders whenever faced with a crisis. Take a look at Priyanka’s photo in black and white and the resemblance to her grandmother is remarkable. One can’t help but wonder if another woman, after Indira Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, is about take the helm of India’s oldest party and ‘First Family’. So far Priyanka has maintained a relatively low-key profile, appearing in public functions only during the time of elections. Everyone knows that she is married to prominent Delhi businessman Robert Vadra and has two children. Described by several media and political observers as a power-dresser, she carries off a t-shirt and cotton sari with equal élan. Unknown to many is the information that she is also a Ham radio operator. Ours is a country where personal charis-

No crime in city?

Poets are dwindling

I have been reading Postnoon from sometime now and have liked the city articles. But one thing that I noticed recently was the dearth of crime articles and it got me wondering if the crime rate has come down in the city which seems to be a bit difficult to believe. The emphasis on crime articles seems to have gone down as compared to earlier when there were some stories on the crime section.

The headline 'Dead poets society' truly sets the tone of the story. India has not seen many good poets after Nissim Ezekiel and Dom Moraes. And Moraes has hit the nail on the head when he says that what poetry needs today is an audience. I remember when I was in school; poets were the most sough-after students. Girls go gaga over such arty fellows. But that's besides the point. Only when the words failure and boredom are disassociated with poetry can one see some revival in the poetry scene in India. ma is more effective in ensuring mass following than ability or willingness to govern — a factor that gives Priyanka a huge advantage that can offset her lack of experience in the hinterland politics. Also adding to her advantage is the fact that about half of the electorate are women. Whether this combined thrust will propel her to the top office of the country is the question only a full-fledged national election battle can answer. The Congress is in dire straits, rocked by mega scams and arm-twisting by allies. The party has also drawn flak from the industry for its ability to deliver on key policy initiatives. The only advantage is a divided Opposition, led by the BJP, who have no credible alternative to offer. The saffron party recently shot itself in the foot by inducting Babusingh Kushwaha who was booted out by Mayawati over the NHRM scam. The party

will find it tough to explain why Yeddyurappa’s nominee is ruling Karnataka and why it made peace with the Reddy brothers, all under a cloud of suspicion over multiple scams. With Anna Hazare’s anti-graft movement fizzling out after a media overkill and parliamentary dead end, the Congress has no credible challenge to its status quo. However, in Uttar Pradesh, status quo means flash in the pan or the grass that gets trampled when the wrestler patriarch grapples with the pachyderm. Rahul has had his chance for over a decade now and yet has fallen way short of expectations. Therefore, it’s only natural that other leaders and party members may rally around a new face. It is time for the Congress and the Gandhi khandan to take some tough and decisive measures.

AD CAN BE SLOWED DOWN

While Alzheimer’s cannot be prevented altogether, with a little awareness it can be identified early on Ranjani Rajender ranjani.r@postnoon.com

P

icture this: one fine day you walk in to your home only to find your mum frantically looking for some important documents you’d given her just that morning. She’s going out of her mind with worry because she can’t seem to locate them. You glance around the room and lo! They’re lying right there on the coffee table in front of your mum. So what do you do? Dismiss it as just a one-off incident or realise that something may be amiss and your mother’s health may need to be investigated further? Forgetfulness, irritability, having trouble remembering your address, directions to your home from the grocery store, depression, difficulty to read and write, changes in personality are not mere mood swings or signs of ageing. They are in fact, some of the earliest signs of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). “While the exact causes are not yet known, genetics and environmental factors have been known to contribute to this degenerative ailment,” says Dr Renuka Mathur, who works with Alzheimer’s patients. While nothing can be done to prevent the onset of AD, with a little alertness in identifying the problem and early treatment, the progress of the disease can be slowed down.

Signs to watch out for Memory loss Confusion with time or place Difficulty coping with basic tasks n Misplacing things and difficulty remembering n Poor judgement n Withdrawal from social activities However, some of these symptoms like memory loss n n n

could also signal more serious and life threatening ailments like tumours, stroke and thyroid. So it is best to get a CT scan or an MRI done to rule these out. With the advancement in technology there are tests that neurologists do to determine the onset of Alzheimer’s. “A lot of people think that using certain herbs and vitamins can slow down the progress of AD. But there are no proven studies to support these myths. While it is difficult to slow down Alzheimer’s, under a doctor’s guidance, medications and certain therapies it is possible to do so,” Dr Renuka Mathur. Maintaining good brain health can also help prevent the onset of degenerative brain diseases. n Regular exercise n Healthy diet n Mental stimulation n Quality sleep n Stress management n An active social life It has been said that following a plant-based diet, staying fit and staying away from certain vaccines and fish that contain mercury can also help.

New surgical procedure lowers blood pressure TORONTO: A minimally invasive surgical procedure called renal denervation can significantly lower blood pressure (BP) in patients who are unable to control it with drugs. The nearly painless procedure has been tried out for the first time by doctors at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre (PMCC) in Canada. It involves de-activating nerves located on the outside of the artery that feeds blood to the kidney, thereby lowering BP. BP patients have to endure an especially high risk of heart attacks and stroke, which continue to kill tens of thousands of people worldwide every year, according to a Peter Munk statement. The first Canadian patient to undergo the procedure of renal denervation, is a 57-year-old male from Toronto, who will be discharged after overnight observation. The procedure was performed by a team of Dheeraj Rajan, interventional radiology specialist, Douglas Ing, cardiologist, and George Oreopoulos, vascular surgeon. The team recently returned from Germany, where they trained for the procedure. Barry Rubin, medical director of PMCC, said: "Decreasing a patient's systolic blood pressure from 160 to 130 mm Hg (mercury) over a period of six months, which this procedure has been shown to do, could prevent many heart attacks and strokes." "Renal denervation could also save the healthcare system countless millions of dollars by minimizing the need for anti-hypertension drugs..., to say nothing of the millions more in savings from not having to treat heart attacks and strokes that don't happen," added Rubin. The procedure was first used on patients in Australia, and its effects were reported in a clinical trial published in the Dec 4, 2010, issue of medical journal, The Lancet. IANS

Y

ou think that colorectal cancer isn’t your concern if you’re young. Experts have a message for those of us who are reluctant to get tested for cancer of the colon and rectum: Don’t die of embarrassment. A check-up to detect colorectal cancer can find early symptomless cancers – or even precancers – when they are in highly curable stages. Screening methods can pick up the disease at its earliest, most curable stages.

Symptoms See your doctor if you experience any of the following symptoms: n Diarrhoea or constipation n Rectal bleeding or blood in the stool n Stools that are smaller in width than usual n Abdominal gas and discomfort n Frequent gas pains n A feeling that the bowel never completely empties n Unexplained weight loss n Unexplained anaemia n Constant tiredness

Risk factors

n Age: The most important risk

factor for developing colorectal cancer is age. Men and women should begin screening for it beginning at age 50. n Environment: The cause of colon cancer is unknown. But since the incidence of the disease is much greater in industrialised countries, environmental factors, including eating habits, may contribute its development. n Family History: People with a family history of certain cancers or growths in the colon (polyps) or chronic inflammatory bowel diseases have a higher risk of developing colorectal cancer. You should get screened if you have any of the following risk factors: n A personal or family history of colon cancer. The risk is greater if the cancer occurred in close relatives. n A personal history of colon polyps or a close relative with multiple colon polyps. Doctors believe most colon cancers begin as polyps. n A history of inflammatory bowel disease, such as chronic ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. n A history of breast, ovarian, or endometrial cancer may also increase the risk of colorectal cancer.

Treatment

COLORECTAL CANCERS CAN BE CONTROLLED

Prevention There are several measures that may help lower your risk of colorectal cancer: n Early-Detection Test. The vast majority of deaths from colorectal cancer could be avoided if people took advantage of screening tests. Trouble is, hardly anyone aged 50 and older are getting tested. n Aspirin. People who take aspirin regularly to keep their hearts healthy may also reduce their risk of cancer. Taking an aspirin every other day for 20 years may cut the risk of colon cancer almost in half, according to a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine. n Estrogen Replacement Therapy (ERT). Women who take ERT to alleviate symptoms of menopause may have a significantly lower risk of fatal colon cancer. Researchers found that women who had used ERT had a 29 per cent reduction in risk compared to nonusers. n Exercise and Weight Control. The risk of developing colon cancer may be lower in women who enjoy regular physical activity and

14

Dr Mohana Vamsy Ch avoid obesity. n Smoking. Studies have linked cigarette smoking to colon cancer. The studies also found that smoking at a young age (in your 20s) increases your life time risk of colorectal cancer. But remember that the longer you smoke, the greater your risk. n Eating Habits. Researchers thought that eating low-fat, highfiber foods would help lower the chances of developing colon cancer. But two studies show that men and women with polyps who ate such a diet were no less likely to develop new polyps than those who did not.

Screening Detection methods are so effective

that suspicious tissue can be removed before it has a chance to develop into cancer. When colorectal cancer is found at an early localised stage, the five-year survival rate is about 91 per cent. The five-year survival rate drops to 66 per cent when cancer has spread to surrounding tissue. Common screening methods are: Digital rectal exam. To detect abnormalities, the doctor inserts a gloved, lubricated finger into the rectum. This exam is useful in detecting some polyps and cancers, but it’s limited to only rectum area. Fecal occult blood test (FOBT). For this type of screening, patients take home a test kit and collect small samples from three consecutive bowel movements,

then mail the kit to a lab for analysis. Traces of blood in the stool are a possible sign of cancer. In the past, there was controversy concerning the usefulness of FOBT. But a study of 46,000 people at the University of Minnesota showed a 20 per cent reduction in the cancer rate among those offered the test. Sigmoidoscopy: To perform this exam, the doctor places a slender, flexible lighted tube into the rectum to look at the inside of the rectum and the lower part of the colon. If an abnormality is spotted, a colonoscopy is recommended. Colonoscopy: A colonoscope is a long flexible, lighted tube that is inserted into the rectum to examine the entire colon. If a polyp is found, it can be removed. Patients

When colon cancers are found at very early stages, the cancerous tissue plus some surrounding tissue is surgically removed from the inner surface of the intestine. If the cancer has invaded the wall of the colon, the cancer is removed along with surrounding colon tissue and the nearby lymph nodes. The surgeon then reconnects the remaining parts of the colon (surgical resection). If resectioning is not possible, an opening in the patient’s abdomen (called a colostomy) is made to allow wastes to pass out of the body. The colostomy may be necessary only until the colon has healed, or, if the entire rectum is removed, it may be permanent. When cancer is in advanced stages, surgery may be done to relieve symptoms such as blockages and bleeding. Chemotherapy is often recommended for colon cancer, especially if the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes. In advanced stages, chemotherapy or radiation may shrink tumors.

Post-treatment monitoring Patients who have been treated for colorectal cancer have regular follow-up exams and blood tests to monitor for any possible additional growths. It has been found that 80 per cent – 90 per cent of colorectal cancer recurrences develop in the first two to three years after treatment. In the fight against colorectal cancer, early detection is key to increased survival rates. The exams you undergo now-and any slight discomfort or embarrassment they may cause-could save your life. Pinky Reddy (second-left) on a trip to Harvard.

Pinky Reddy is justifiably referred to as a social figure, a Tsarina of hospitality. However, in a society that constantly stereotypes individuals by skimming through superficial traits, the question is, how many of us know the benevolent side to the most talked about woman in social circles?

n a candid tete-a-tete with Postnoon, Aparna ‘Pinky’ Reddy reveals how she has inherited her father Subbarami Reddy's philanthropic nature but believes that her 'no fears, no airs' attitude is what gives her the confidence in her social, family life and humanitarian endeavours. “My father is my icon. I have grown up seeing his commitment to various social initiatives. Perhaps that’s where the seed for philanthropy was planted.” Leadership qualities too emerged at a young age, when she was elected Head Girl of her school. “Despite being a protected child, I found myself becoming an active participant in student activities. That probably gave impetus to my social service instincts.” Exploring this facet of her personality came later. “There is no question that even after marriage I was pampered, but the need to do something on my own grew steadily. For that, I am thankful to Sanjay, my husband and my in-laws who gave me the freedom to do what I believed in.” As chairperson of the Hyderabad 10K Run and the head of the FICCI Ladies Organisation, Pinky Reddy has

demonstrated the ability to take on challenges. Under Pinky's reign, the 10K became a hugely popular platform. There were questions raised as to the necessity of the presence of celebrities but she believed that their presence would make a huge difference. Sure enough the endorsements of Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Sachin Tendulkar, Sania Mirza and Gopichand gave the 10K Run a mammoth attendance like never before. In June 2011, Pinky Reddy was nominated the chairperson of the FICCI Ladies Organisation, Hyderabad chapter. Sharing her excitement, she tells us, “I was happy to take up the responsibility. Being able to make a difference vis-a-vis a women’s organisation, is highly fulfilling.” Under the leadership of Pinky, the Corporate Social Responsibility wing of FLO has taken up the initiative of educating the girl child in government schools in Hyderabad. “FLO has created some of the most interesting forums this year to educate and empower women. Sudha Murty, Paresh Maity, Ekta Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Rijuta Divekar and many other achievers have been invited to impart knowledge and share their experiences with us.” Coming soon is one of the largest inter-state FLO forums that will be hosted in Hyderabad, which will culminate

in a retreat in Tirupati. Sharing her perception of the role of women in society today, Pinky says, “It is good to see women taking decisions on their own today. I am lucky that I come from a family of strong women and capable of challenging norms. From my mother and my mother-in-law, I learnt to enjoy independence, but not get swayed. They taught me the importance of dignity and selfconfidence. Sudha Murty and Oprah have shown me the value of humility. There is something to learn from everyone you meet. I have learnt so much from my daughter too!” Continuing her work for society, Pinky plans to establish a trust in the near future. The revenues earned from her independent business venture — The Lotus House — a lifestyle store in Mumbai, will fund the trust. “My wish is to start an old-age home, a community with all possible benefits to make old age not just comfortable but cared for.” She further adds, “My belief is that if you have the means and the access, you must connect people to come together for a cause and to help.”

thing has nothing to do with the other. The era they lived in is completely opposite to now — everything has changed. Many women think of marriage as more of an annoying distraction than a welcome diversion. They can have a family or a career, but ‘having it all’, so to speak, isn’t as easy as the slogan suggests. Whether or not this is true is debatable. But the feeling is real and very prevalent.

Because you are what you wear

From ringlet locks to going bald, supermodel Diandra Soares has always tried to do things differently. Her tall and toned athletic frame and her chemistry with the camera make her the favourite of many fashion designers. Today we get to know more about this catwalk queen Isha Mukoo Isha.m@postnoon.com

nTell us some interesting facts about you. I love to cook and I am a good cook I'm told. I can cook Indian, Goan, Italian, Continental, Thai and Chinese. I have recently started learning to bake. I've also learnt to make a few desserts and it has been a huge hit with my boyfriend and other friends. nHow many years have you walked the earth? 32 years. nYour first stint with the camera? I was 15-years old when I did my first portfolio and then a Vimal’s suiting ad with Jackie Shroff. n Who is your ideal fashion photographer? Rafique shoots me well. I have done interesting work with him and I loved working with Boman Irani. He did my first folio and later my Miss India folio and I loved those pictures. I also love Tina Dehal’s work. nWhat will you not leave home without? My mobile and wallet. nSexiest item in a woman’s wardrobe is... A sexy bikini. nWhat are the essentials in your wardrobe? I will not say LBD, because till date I have never ever possessed one! Nor a white shirt even! According to me, a nice pair of shorts, denims and khakis, a basic razor back vest in black and white, linen pyjama pants, a pair of sexy fitting jeans, a well-fitted blazer, well-fitted bras and a stunning colourful bikini! n Projects that people can spot you in? My last project was Khatron Ke Khiladi Season 4.

CANDID THREE

n What’s your sexiest asset? My eyes!

MODEL WATCH

n What is the best compliment you have received so far? In Khatron ke Khiladi 4 people who did not know me thought I was a bitch and were scared of me but later said that I was funny, sweet and childlike and also they loved my laugh. I thought that was sweet. n Any Bollywood aspirations? Not really. But if I get an offer that is interesting or a song to dance to I would love to do it. Never say never!

wWhat inspired you to become a model?

Madhu Sapre answering her question in the last round at the Miss Universe contest. My mum was watching it and I was 13 and I thought wow! She is stunning and her answer is so honest. So I was inspired by Madhu and today, she is a good friend. I love her. After I lost my chance at becoming Miss India, she gave me an inspiring talk and it has stayed with me ever since.

w If not modelling then what would you have

been doing? If not a model I would do something in the creative field. I would have either become a fashion designer, a jewellery designer or a make-up artist. But now I even double up as a make-up artist.

wAdvice to upcoming models...

You must bring your own personality to the ramp; be inspired by other models but do not clone them; learn from them but put your own spin on things. Also, don’t put on airs and pretend to know everything. Remember you have something new to learn every day. Try and enhance the positives and work on your negatives. Always be confident, never overconfident!"

The glamour behind the glitz

Enjoying the feeling of success After an eventful year of hits, misses and controversies, Kajal Aggarwal is on a new high as her latest film Businessman makes waves at the box-office

ajal Aggarwal can finally thank the gods, directors and her co-stars for making her what she is today. This year, she has two big Tamil films — Suriya’s Maatran and Vijay’s Thuppaki apart from Ram Charan Tej-VV Vinayak’s untitled film and Tarak’s Action to her credit. These days she has every reason to smile after all the ups and downs she has been through for a good part of 2011. First it was her remarks on her career in South and then the infamous shoot for a leading men’s magazine that kept her in the news for all the wrong reasons. The silver lining was that two of her films Mr Perfect and Singham were huge hits. It wasn’t a year, which she would want to remember,

actress in recent times to have two blockbusters — Magadheera and Businessman, to her credit, she smiles and says, “I am really grateful to the audience for loving me so much and to the directors for trusting me. I have always believed in what my mother told me, ‘Don’t ever let success get to your head or failure get to your heart’.” In Businessman, Kajal plays Chitra, an artist who falls in love with a mafia don. “I was thrilled when Puri Jagannadh explained my role. Chitra is bohemian and independent, but she’s going through an inner conflict since she loves Suriya and at the same time she hates him,” explains Kajal. It isn’t the typical damsel-in-distress sort of act she’s known for. “But people do like seeing me as a damsel in distress, isn’t it?” she laughs. “On

close to my off-screen life. I am equally crazy. But I love my work and try to do my best in every film. There’s a little bit of me in every role I have played,” she adds. We ask her what her reaction would be if she met someone like Suriya Bhai in real life. “Umm… I’ll probably change my phone number.” Of course, she’s joking. “Well, I don’t really know. It depends on whether I’ll fall in love with such a guy or not.” What sort of people is she scared of? “People who take advan-

She’s quite careful about what she says and we wonder if it’s got something to do with the recent controversies. fter much speculation about who’s going to star opposite Venkatesh in Seethamma Vaakitlo Sirimalle Chettu, producer Dil Raju seems to have finally found an actress. Several names of actresses including Bhumika Chawla, Anushka, Trisha and Amala Paul were doing rounds in the media for the past few weeks; however, Anjali has bagged this role and it’s her biggest role till date in Telugu. She became quite popular in Andhra Pradesh post the success of Journey, the Telugu version of Engeyum Eppodhum. Anjali had begun her acting career back in 2006 in a Telugu film titled Photo and after that she acted in Premalekha Raasa. However, both these films bombed at the box-office but she shot to fame in Tamil film industry with films like Kattradhu Tamizh, Angadi Theru and Engeyum Eppodhum. She’s currently acting in Vikram’s Karikalan and Masala Café. The shooting of Seethamma Vaakitlo Sirimalle Chettu has already begun and a song is being canned on Venkatesh in Vizag. The film is the first big multi-starrer in over two decades and Venkatesh and Mahesh Babu are teaming up for the first time in their career. Samantha is paired opposite Mahesh Babu in this film, which is being directed by Srikanth Addala.

llu Arjun has quite a reputation for being a fabulous dancer and working hard on the sets. For Badrinath, he even surprised the dance choreographers with his moves and now we hear that he is walking the extra mile for his upcoming Trivikram Srinivas’ film. Since both Allu Arjun and Trivikram Srinivas had decided to stick to the film’s budget and schedule, the actor went ahead and shot a rain-fight sequence few days ago when the temperature was 7 degree Celsius. Usually, the film’s crew takes all the precautions while shooting under such low temperatures, but no one expected the actor to continue shooting for long hours for the fight sequence. Ileana is playing the lead role and the film is slated to release in summer this year.

Change comes from the common man Writer-turned-director Rumi Jaffery’s next film Gali Gali Chor Hai is based on corruption and Rumi is only too pleased at the timing of its release Taniya Talukdar taniya.t@postnoon.com

A

fter God Tussi Great Ho and Life Partner, Rumi Jaffery is ready with his next release Gali Gali Chor Hai (GGCH), a film based on corruption. Undeterred by the fate of his previous films, which failed to set the cash registers ringing, Rumi is excited and hopeful about GGCH. Talking about the film, Rumi says, “It is an entertaining commercial film that shows the plight of a victim of the system.” “A film takes a lot of time to start. Once the writing is complete, the cast needs to be finalised and one needs to juggle the dates so that the actors can accommodate the film. I think God wanted to help me with the making of the film and hence it is coming out at a time when the anti-corruption movement led by Anna Hazare is on in the country,” explains Rumi, going on to add, “If you notice, throughout history you will see that whenever there has been a change, it has been because of the common man and not the politicians. In my film, I have shown the same thing.” “I have made the film with all my heart and I think that’s

why God decided to help me with its making,” shares Rumi who feels that there is always a difference in the film from the time it is written to the time it is made. But thankfully Rumi did not have to face many problems. Quiz Rumi about the difference between just writing a film and directing what he has written, and he retorts, “Same difference between driving your own car and getting a driver to drive it.” Rumi, who has been in the industry for around 22 years

now, wants to direct his own films and it is only when he finds something unique that he will write for any other filmmaker. “I have been writing for so long now that it is only when I get a kick out of it that I will write for someone else,” informs Rumi. Point taken, we say. GGCH has been shot extensively in Bhopal and one of the recent reports suggests that it was Prakash Jha who had advised Rumi to do so. But Rumi is quick to clear any such misconceptions. In fact he says, “I

have been advising people in the industry for the past 22 years to go and shoot in Bhopal. I am from Bhopal and it is a beautiful city, which is culturally alive and very artistic. In fact, it is interesting to see that all the great writers of Bollywood are from Bhopal. Prakash Jha made two films in Bhopal and the people there got exposed to filmmak-

ing and it became easy for me. It was interesting what Amitabh Bachchan said about shooting there, ‘Usually I want to get back home to Mumbai whenever I get a two-day break between shooting but while at Bhopal, I didn’t feel like leaving it’, such is the beauty of the city.” What is interesting, however, is the star cast of the film, which has Akshaye Khanna and Shriya Saran in the lead. Talking about Akshaye, Rumi says, “Akshaye is a brooding actor and most of the time he likes to be alone and is quite choosy too, in terms of the films he does. He does take time to get comfortable. But you just need somebody who will understand him. When I had the script ready, my unit members said that he would not do the film but he said yes immediately after reading the script. He and I actually share an old relationship right from the days of his Aa Ab Laut Chale, which was written by me and directed by Rishi Kapoor. We have always wanted to work together but somehow were not getting the right script.” The film, which was made in a record time, is the fastest film that Rumi has ever made and he credits it to the involvement of the actors.

Jack Nicholson’s Joker inspires Sanjay A

ctor Sanjay Dutt says he drew inspiration from Jack Nicholson’s role as Joker in Batman to play his part of villain Kancha Cheena in Karan Johar’s Agneepath, releasing on January 26. “I loved Jack Nicholson’s Joker in Batman and it was on my mind when I was working on Kancha Cheena’s laugh,” said Sanjay. The actor went bald to get his look right as the villain in the revenge drama, which also features Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra. But thanks to his bald look, when he returned home from shooting one day, his twins failed to recognise him, says a source. His twins — Iqara and Shahraan, couldn’t recognise their dad as they had last seen him with a crown full of hair. But all was well once they heard his voice. IANS

Luke’s Zombie marches ahead!

uke Kenny’s Zombie has already announced its intent to be the Origin of Zombie flick, by having two sequels planned to complete a ‘trilogy’ of Zombie genre in Bollywood. Both writer director duo Luke Kenny and Devaki Singh are huge zombie fans and are considered as experts in this genre. Kenny Films were sure, that to remain true to the Zombie genre, they needed a superb script, stellar music score, haunting atmospherics, brilliant direction and not starry names that will dilute and lessen the impact due to their set image and also to pay a tribute to acclaimed directors of this genre in Hollywood who have worked without stars in this particular genre. Luke says, “This film is a Zombie origin film. Not a zombie com-

edy, not a zombie survival film. Indian audiences will empathise with the journey of a human being as he is faced with a seemingly insurmountable predicament. Indian and international audiences will learn the humanity behind the Zombie origin saga which is what I along with my partner Devaki Singh are looking to present.

He might be better known as an actor, an architect, an art director and even a writer, but Kamal Kamaraju is really an artist at heart. And with his first solo exhibition, he presents Minnu — a physical representation of an idea that encompasses the essence of all that makes a woman. Take a look

MINNU’S STORY

My Name is Minnu, Venue: Muse Art Gallery, Marriott Hotel Date: Till January 21,2012

he earliest that he can remember, Kamal Kamaraju was the last bencher who spent his time doodling away his thoughts while a lecture droned on in the background. From there, he went on to explore everything from dance to drama, architecture to acting, but took his art with him throughout. “I've always been into art. But it's only in the last couple of years that I realised that my art must mean something. I was looking for a subject that would provoke.” And a subject he did find — feminism. “I grew up in a household with women who were strong role models who did not subscribe to any gender roles. It was quite jarring for me to realise that the world outside operated quite differently.” The idea led to the conception of Minnu. “Minnu is me and you. Most people look at Minnu and think that it is just a doll. But it’s more than that. It is an idea. Minnu is everything within us that's trying to find meaning and shape, but hasn't yet. The series is a sort of social commentary, a way to depict all the beautiful facets of woman,” says Kamal.

KAKURO

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Ski star Burke succumbs to her injuries

QBs back in action as Super Sunday beckons NEW YORK: New England quarterback Tom Brady and New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning were back at practice on Thursday as teams began their final preparations for Sunday’s NFL semi-final playoff showdowns. The Giants, fresh off ousting NFL regular season win leader Green Bay, will visit the San Francisco 49ers while the Baltimore Ravens will travel to New England in conference title games to determine the opponents for Super Bowl 46. Manning missed most of Wednesday’s workout with a stomach ailment while Brady sat out Wednesday’s Patriots practice to rest a sore left shoulder. “I just missed practice, that’s all,” Brady said. “We’re facing a great team, certainly the best team we’ve faced all year. Everyone needs to be at full strength. It’s going to be a very physical, tough, hard-nosed game.” The 49ers are coached by Jim Harbaugh while the Ravens are guided by his brother John, who is 15 months older. Baltimore beat San Francisco 16-6 last November in the first NFL game to feature coaches who were brothers. It’s possible they will have a rematch with a championship at stake in the Super Bowl on February 5 at Indianapolis. Or they both might be knocked out

and the Giants and Patriots will face a rematch of the 2008 Super Bowl in which New York upset New England in the final seconds to deny the Patriots a perfect season. The 49ers try to return to the Super Bowl for the first time since taking their fifth title in 1995, seeking another title to match the record six Super Bowls won by Pittsburgh. San Francisco, in the playoffs after a 10-year absence, have used a stellar defensive unit to power their playoff push. The 49ers, who beat the Giants 2720 last November in a regular-season game, will be tested by a passing attack centered around Manning and top targets Hakeem Nicks, Victor Cruz and Mario Manningham. “Nicks can make any catch, run any route. Cruz is trouble in the slot, a real quick guy, and Manningham is a deep threat down the middle,” said 49ers cornerback Carlos Rogers. “They all possess a different challenge and it seems like they are getting better every week.” But the 49ers have made 23 interceptions and sacked rival passers 42 times, enough to keep the Giants from pondering Super Bowl dreams too much. “It’s good to look ahead,” Cruz said. “It’s good to understand what we’re playing for but we have to understand the

San Francisco 49ers task at hand, that bridge we have to cross in order to make it to our ultimate goal. San Francisco is that bridge.” The 49ers have produced enough points to support the defense, quarterback Alex Smith adopting a low-key manner even as he evolves beyond simply managing his way to victory. “If we win this game and go to the Super Bowl it will say a lot,” Smith said. “Winning games speaks for itself. That’s how you do your talking.” At New England, the Ravens offer a similar defensive-powered squad against Brady, who won three Super Bowl titles in four seasons in the 2002-2005 title games and was denied another by the Giants in 2008 only in the final seconds. Baltimore defensive back Ed Reed said teammate Joe Flacco, the Ravens’ quarterback, “was kind of rattled” and “just didn’t look like he had a hold on the offense” in last week’s playoff victory over Houston.

SALT LAKE CITY: Freestyle ski star Sarah Burke died on Thursday from injuries sustained in a superpipe training accident suffered earlier this month, the Canadian Freestyle Ski Association said. University of Utah Medical Center officials confirmed that Burke died at 9:22 am in the presence of her family after her fall on a training superpipe at nearby Park City on January 10. She was 29. Doctors said she suffered a ruptured vertebral artery that reduced blood flow to the brain, leading to severe bleeding. She remained in a coma and on life support from the time she reached the Salt Lake City hospital. Doctors discovered Burke had suffered irreversible brain damage after going into cardiac arrest. “The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude for the international outpouring of support they have received from all the people Sarah touched,” said a statement from Burke’s family, who donated her organs for transplant. Burke, a four-time Winter X Games champion, has been instrumental in raising the profile of freestyle halfpipe and was an enthusiastic and influential supporter of its inclusion in the Olympics from 2014. Burke would have been among the medal favorites in Sochi for the women’s superpipe debut. The Park City course where Burke was injured was the same one upon which snowboarder Kevin Pearce was critically injured in a 2009 training run. Pearce recovered and returned to snowboarding last month.

City dribbles, but awaits slam dunk

ittle Anushka is full of beans when she comes to the basketball court at the Secunderabad YMCA. The UKG student can hardly dunk the

ball, and she rarely does, but she tries persistently. Anushka first dribbled the ball here when she came along with her father, who used to play the game when he was at school. And she has been regularly coming to practice since. It is a rosy picture that the Secunderabad YMCA gives when one gets to know that the first

ever basketball game was played at the YMCA training school in Springfield, MA, USA, in 1892: that the game has reached in this part of the globe and has so many pursuers and fans is admirable, especially, in a country where other games but cricket matter. However, behind this rosy picture is hidden a grim truth. Andhra Pradesh, that was among

the best about five, six years ago in basketball nationals, has been slipping over the years. Not that the state lacks quality and talent, but it lacks scope to motivate players and give them hope. Some of the state’s best had come to practice on Thursday. And Martin Decosta, a celebrity fitness trainer, who had played for NBA teams like Atlanta Hawks and Sacramental Kings, along with his two friends, had come down to play, too. One team had Decosta and his friends and a state promising player Pridhvi and the other had the talented Moses, Srinath and Krishna Kanna, also state players and regular YMCA players. In a game that was decided by best of three sets, Decosta’s team was bested. After the game, I asked Decosta about Indian basketball.

Sharmila becomes youngest Indian golfer to qualify for European Tour LA MANGA (SPAIN): Sharmila Nicollet of India clinched the 30th and final spot on the Ladies European Tour Qualifiers Final stage with a six foot birdie that may well be the start of stardom for the young 20-year-old Bangalore golfer. Sharmila Nicollet of India clinched the 30th and final spot on the Ladies European Tour Qualifiers Final stage with a six foot birdie that may well be the start of stardom for the young 20-yearold Bangalore golfer. Co-leader after the first round and second after the second, Sharmila endured some tense moments, as she birdied from six feet on the third play-off hole at the South Course. The tall and strikingly good-looking Sharmila becomes the youngest Indian and only the second after Smriti Mehra to earn a full card on the Ladies European Tour. Smriti did it in the mid1990s. In what was easily the most testing

time of her career, Sharmila played 165 holes, nine rounds and three holes in play-off, in 12 days. "I am so excited but ready to fall off," said an excited Sharmila. On the third play-off hole Sharmila had two putts for a birdie four from the right edge of the ninth green at the par-5 ninth hole. She nailed the final six-footer for a birdie and sealed the 30th and final card for the 2012 Ladies European Tour. "My goal was to get on the tour and this is my first time in Spain for the qualifier so I think it's a big achievement for me. To be playing in Europe will be my next immediate goal. I hope to play all the tournaments and maybe move here because I have family in Paris and my dad stays there so maybe I will move there and play all the tournaments," added Sharmila, whose father is French and mother Indian. "I'm just so happy and excited. It's been a long two weeks and it's been a long wait and fingers crossed for the sea-

son. I'd like to win a European Tour event and maybe emulate someone like Yani or Caroline by being the first rookie, who won four tournaments. If I could just win one tournament; that would be my goal. I think the whole of India is behind me and had a lot of expectations." The Final stage was won by Jodi Ewart (73) who finished at 11-under and she was followed by Anais Maggetti (71) at nine-under and Carlota Ciganda (73) was third at four-under. Sharmila, who shot a final round of two-over 75 on the par-73 South Course, had a heart-wrenching time. After starting on the tenth she was one-under for the first nine and placed tied 16th at that stage. Bogeys on second, fourth, fifth and seventh almost derailed her campaign, which began last week in the pre-qualifiers. She then summoned all her composure and birdied the par-4 8th hole, her 89th hole in the competition. She then had to wait for more than two hours before knowing her fate.

“I think Indian basketball lacks competitiveness,” he said. “There are some really talented kids here. But what I feel is they need better facilities to up their game like wooden courts and proper leather balls. And I think the fundamentals of the game is also lacking. These kids may have picked up some fancy stuff from watching videos on the internet and TV, but the basics like dribbling and shifting without looking at the ball, they have to work a lot on that.” Decosta also said the game here does not give much scope that gives hope to players to excel. “When I started playing, I believed I could play for college. That motivated me and I went on to play for NBA teams and earned by playing,” explained Decosta. “But I don’t see such a scenario here.”

Craig vital for Kop Arsenal in revenge mood

LIVERPOOL: Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish will continue to use forward Craig Bellamy sparingly over the remainder of the campaign, an indication of how important the injury-prone Welsh is to his club’s cause. Bellamy, 32, is certain to play some part in his team’s visit to struggling Bolton, a game Liverpool hope will allow them to maintain the push towards a topfour finish and a place in next season’s Champions League. But it is likely to be a cameo role. Bellamy has started just nine games in all competitions this season, and completed 90 minutes

just once, making 11 appearances as a substitute — a policy that Dalglish says he will continue. “Some players need greater management than others, but the players themselves have got to look after themselves,” he said. “Craig is fantastic in preparing for matches. I’m sure there’s many others in there exactly the same — but he’s really got a great knowledge of how you prepare. “For the fitness side of it, it’s not fair on too many players at this stage of the season to be starting them every single game. Our goalkeeper Pepe Reina, obviously, has started every one —

but for the outfield players it’s difficult for them, to get them through every game you play.” There has been no doubting Bellamy’s enthusiasm and value to Liverpool when he has been used so far this season, since rejoining the club from Manchester City in the summer, and he played a pivotal role in his team’s recent League Cup semi-final victory against his former club. “He’s been like that since he was at Norwich and was 17-yearsold. He does what best suits him and that’s all you can ask for. It’s an indication on Craig and how he’s managed himself,” said Dalglish.

lian star who will turn 20 in February, said Thursday he plans to continue playing for the Santos Football Club until July 2014. He was in Montevideo to receive the accolade of best player in the Americas, awarded by the Uruguayan newspaper El Pais. “I do not plan to go now, I have many things to do in Santos,” he said when asked by reporters about European clubs that are trying to hire him. “I have a contract until 2014 and I intend to stay until 2014,” said the player who has scored 81 goals in 159 games. He renewed his contract in November for two more years. Neymar, whose full name is Neymar da Silva Santos Jr, plays up front for Santos and the Brazilian national side. Asked if he envisioned playing in Europe after the World Cup in Brazil in 2014, he said he was not sure. “Everyone knows it’s a dream to go play in Europe (...) I don’t know whether it will be in 2014 or later,” he said.

LONDON: Tottenham and Arsenal will be looking to avenge early season defeats on Sunday as the north London clubs take on Manchester’s Premier League pace-setters. Spurs travel to Eastlands for a showdown with league leaders Manchester City, four months after Roberto Mancini’s side established their title credentials with an impressive 5-1 demolition of Tottenham at White Hart Lane. The only consolation for Spurs fans on that miserable early season afternoon back in August came in the form of Arsenal’s record 8-2 humiliation against Manchester United at Old Trafford on the same day. Since those twin thrashings, Spurs have made the more impressive recovery, reeling off 14 wins from 19 games, with four draws, and only two defeats to stand third in the table. Although Harry Redknapp’s side spurned the opportunity to go level on points with City last weekend when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Wolves, midfielder Luka Modric believes Tottenham

can close the gap on the leaders on Sunday. City have a 100 per cent home record in the league this season, but Spurs scored a famous victory at Eastlands two years ago to clinch qualification for the Champions League. “The last two seasons we have played massive games there and this will be another one. I hope we will do well and maybe win, why not? We are going there with a positive mindset and we will try to win the game,” Modric said. “We try to do that against every opponent. I think we are that good that we can go there and win them.” City meanwhile are in confident mood after bouncing back from FA and League Cup defeats to Manchester United and Liverpool this week with a gritty 1-0 win over bottom club Wigan. City defender Joleon Lescott said his team-mates had been bemused by suggestions the club’s title charge was faltering. “People were saying we weren’t going to win the league and we are thinking, ‘Hold on a minute, we have lost two cup games’,” Lescott said.
