overnor ESL Narasimhan faced embarrassing moments when opposition members protested, forcing him to read out the speech in a hurry at the joint session of the legislature on the opening day of the 45-day-long Budget Session. Right from the time he entered the Assembly, he faced vociferous protests from members who raised slogans and disrupted his speech, shredding copies of budget speech. As the members threw the prices of his address copy, the Governor’s security prevented the paper missiles from hitting him. There was a semblance of peace only when the national anthem was rendered. Initially, members of the TRS rushed into the well of the House and did not allow him to deliver the address. They raised slogans demanding formation of a separate Telangnana and later walked out along with the members of the TDP. The trouble started when members saw there was no mention of the

Telangana statehood issue in his address. The House was thrown out of gear with both TRS members and a section of TDP members supporting Telangana cause disrupting his address time and again. The Governor mentioned about Krishna-Godavari waters, Hyderabad being developed into medical tourism hub, welfare of farmers, Arogyasri, maternal and infant mortality, eradication of diseases, improvement of power supply, education, environment, and midday meal scheme. Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy was all smiles, while Opposition legislators created a ruckus. The Speaker sitting by the side of the Governor was also smiling from time to time.

t was almost like press censorship on the Assembly premises on the first day of the Budget session. The media was restricted with just 30 passes and the others were not allowed beyond the media point. The OB vans were allowed only around 9.25am for the live coverage of the governor. TDP leader Motkupally Narsimhlu said that governor’s speech had nothing useful for the public. He said that it only attempted to shield the Kiran kuamar Reddy Government. It was like a publicity leaflet of the Government. He questioned why Mopidevi Venkataramana Rao, Excise Minister, was not arrested so far. Another leader Errabelli Dayakar rao wanted the Governor to order a probe into the irregularities of Polavaram project and liquor syndicates, cases on stu-

dents, and general strike of employees. There was no mention of these issues in the Governor’s address, he said. BJP leader G Kishan Reddy said that the Governor’s speech was anti-people and that there was no mention of Telangana. TRS leader Harish Rao said that the Speaker was acting like a dictator and there was no democracy in the House. MLA K Taraka Rama Rao of the TRS also found fault with the speaker for creating hurdles for the media in dissemination of information. He found fault with the Governor for not mentioning Telangana and also on the promises made to the employees during the general strike. Communist leaders said that the Governor’s speech did not reflect the aspirations of the public. They also wanted mention on the input subsidy to the farming community.

`3.5cr ‘house-warming’ I t will be a house-warming for the State Assembly building, which has been spruced up after almost 27 years, on Tuesday when the members gather for the Budget Session. The interiors were given a new look with new leather seats, touchpads, unbreakable mikes and a lot of sitting ease for members. The House is equipped with new audio systems and acoustics. The building was inaugurated by the Rajiv Gandhi in 1985 when NT Rama Rao was the Chief Minister. The joint session of both Houses was held on Monday at

the Old Assembly building. Members are provided with wi-fienabled laptops and plug ‘n’ play facilities in the House. The budget speech will be given in CDs and the members have to go through the same on their laptops and there will be no hard copy, it is learnt. Some members are already apprehensive that they could not read the budget completely on the laptop. The renovation was undertaken at a cost of about `3.5 crore, said speaker Nadendla Manohar. The members are already equipped with RFID cards to record their attendance.

nraged at her brother getting arrested for theft, a Congress leader and a former sarpanch of Pahadi Shareef mandal, Abdulla Bin Awad is alleged to have thrashed his wife Afsar Begum on Saturday. The humiliated wife tried to commit suicide by hanging in her home but was saved by neighbours and is now in hospital. Her condition is said to be stable, sources said. Inspector Pahadi Shareef, T Govardhan said Afsar’s brother Shaikh Akbar, 25, is jobless and stays with her sister and brother-in-law. He has lately been indulging in thefts. In the latest incident, the police investigation team recovered two tolas of gold,

four mobile phone sets, and two hand-bags from Abdulla Bin’s house. Recently, Akbar was held for another theft. Abdulla was outraged that stolen goods were recovered from his home and he saw in it a threat to his political life. Abdulla is said to have picked up a quarrel with his wife on this matter that ended in breaking furniture and beating up Afsar. After the violence, he left with their four children for his parents’ home. Left alone and feeling miserable, Afsar tried to commit suicide. She was however detected by neighbours and was saved from the noose. Akbar is being held under Section 457 and 380 of the Indian Penal Code for committing thefts and hiding the booty. Abdulla, a locally powerful political leader, is reportedly very close to home minister Sabitha Indra Reddy.

Physically challenged people in the City can now get prosthetics at this camp volunteer, Krishna Naik, who got callipers at the same camp a few years ago, came back to help other needy people. “I feel really proud to be able to help others and brought a lot of people in need here. I have been volunteering here for three years and it feels great,” he said. Sharing the same sentiment, Fareeda Hussain, secretary, BMVS, said, “We want to see the State free of disability. All they need is a normal life, something that they can only dream about. They only wish that they have arms and legs or anything to help them feel ‘normal’. Answering their prayers, the GHMC and Mission for Elimination of Poverty in association with Bhagwan Mahavir Vikalang Samiti (BMVS), an NGO, has organised a four-day camp starting Saturday, providing artificial limbs for free to the orthopaedically handicapped. The camp was designed in such a way that any physically challenged person could visit the venue, get a series of tests done and walk out with new prosthetic limbs, tricycles, crutches or walkers. What was heartening, say organisers, were the bright smiles on the faces of the people who benefitted from this camp. C Krishna, a resident of Hayath Nagar, lost his right arm due to a massive electrical shock when he was only 8. Life has never been the same for him since. “People used to think I was ‘abnormal’ only because I did not have an arm. I had to face a lot of humiliation,” he said. After get-

Naidu outlines battle plans at rally POLITICS Saye Sekhar saye@postnoon.com

T

he Telugu Desam Legislature Party took out a protest rally from NTR Ghat to the State Legislative Assembly this morning. Former Chief Minister and TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu said that his party would spare no efforts to save the State

As if he threw alms, the Speaker nominated just two of our colleagues in the House Committee constituted to probe into the land allotments. That too, the nomination was autocratic.

from the ‘clutches of corruption’. He strongly condemned the nomination of ‘just two legislators’ on behalf of his party which had over 80 MLAs in the Assembly. “As if he threw alms, the Speaker nominated just two of our colleagues in the House Committee constituted to probe into the land allotments. That too, the nomination was autocratic. He did not consult us. I have been in politics for the last 32-35 years and never have I seen such demeaning approach by anybody towards the main opposition party.” He said that the Congress government was mired in numerous scandals and “swindled public money”. He referred to the Obulapuram Mines and other cases. Naidu also spoke about how the Lokayukta indicted the Karnataka Government and even the Chief Minister was brought to book there. The TDP would highlight the anti-people and anti-farmer policies of the Congress government, he said. “It is an utter disgrace to the government, for a minister is named in the remand report of a liquor cartel leader. Such a shameful thing never happened anywhere in the democratic history of

India. The Governor would come and deliver his customary address in the Assembly, giving a quiet goby to this heinous involvement of a minister in a scandal. After all, the Governor has a responsibility to initiate action against the minister,” said Naidu. Meanwhile, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) MLAs paid homage to those who laid down their lives for the cause of a sepa-

rate Telangana. Party legislator T Harish Rao said that they would press for a resolution by the Assembly for the creation of a separate State for Telanagana. The MLAs raised slogans against the Government. He said the TRS would introduce a private Bill on coming Friday, if the government did not come forth to do so. The Communist Party of India

(Marxists) MLA Julakanti Ranga Reddy also took out protest march to the Assembly. The breakaway faction of the Congress legislators, who owe allegiance to YS Jaganmohan Reddy, wanted that they be recognised a separate group, if the Speaker did not want to disqualify them. This is causing an embarrassment to the ruling Congress.

A

t a time when Nasscom has predicted a slowdown in the Indian market and companies are shying away from recruitments, a secure government job is what everyone is looking for. Little wonder then that there was a spurt in the number of candidates appearing for the Graduate aptitude test in engineering (GATE) this year. According to data the number has increased by more than 20,000 in the State. Another reason for the spurt was the public sector undertaking (PSU) making GATE mandatory for technical jobs. “After a long time there are several openings in central government jobs. Besides, government jobs are secure and a GATE score is mandatory for these. Hence I wrote the exam,” said Naresh Reddy, an IT employee. With more than 1,500 openings in companies like Indian oil, BHEL and

NTPC most students are trying their luck in this lucrative sector. Apart from these there are several other openings through GATE like DRDO and BSNL. However, the bar was raised this year, with candidates claiming the exam was much tougher when compared to GATE 2011. However, the questions were glitch-free. “The questions were very tough this year and I found it tough to complete my exam on time,” said Shiva Shankar, who wrote the exam. This year, another change made was that third year B.Tech students were not allowed to take the test, making it easier for the fourth year students to crack the exam. More than 1.6 lakh students appeared for the GATE this year. Twenty one papers on different streams of engineering were conducted, of which students claim that electronic and communication (ECE) was the easiest. The results will be announced on March 15. Around 50,000 seats are available for M.Tech while there are 400 in IIT. Most students in the City are aiming for IIT.

I have been giving this exam since three years to get a seat in IIT but this year I am planning to apply for a central government job. Compared to the last three years the exam was very difficult this year. Sree Lakshmi, IT employee I am a teacher in UP but I came to Hyderabad to take special coaching for GATE. Compared to all other government exams this was easy. Shailendra Kumar, teacher They have made GATE scores mandatory for government jobs, so many students appeared for it this year. For me it’s IIT and compared to the last year the level was very difficult and timing was also a problem. Anudeep I, Aurora engineering college.

Lonely Hearts Club, don’t despair All you single people, no reason to sit at home and mope. We present a Valentine’s Day survival strategy! Padmini C padmini.c@postnoon.com

I

t’s that time of the year again when the world turns red. Candy boxes in the stores, red roses on the stands, heart-shaped pillows, specially designed restaurant meals and of course mushy movies are flying all over the place. Ladies and Gentlemen, Valentine’s Day fever has caught on. While it’s a day to celebrate in coupledom, the rest of us in singleville are left ignoring pointed questions and jabs about our dismal love lives and feeling lonely and miserable. We say, time to change things. This Valentine’s Day, we too will be happy. Follow our simple Valentine’s Day survival strategy!

1 DAY TO GO Step 1: Flock together – Gather all your single friends. The more, the merrier. Step 2: Raison D’etre – Let the couples go crazy trying to up each other on who is more romantic. Us? We’ll celebrate our freedom. Step 3: Indulge – Think of it like this. All the time, effort and resources you would spend otherwise on a valentine, you now get to spend on yourself! Go shopping. Go to a spa. Do something that makes you happy. Step 4: Plan B – Still not happy? Go impromptu, what do you have to lose? Ask out the girl/guy you’ve been wanting to forever! It’s Valentine’s Day. Chances are, they are waiting for you to. Besides, they won’t have the heart to break your heart tomorrow. On the other hand, if you want guaranteed love, adopt a pup. Step 5: An Anti-V Day Party! – Hows’ that for a theme? Go out and protest the tyranny of coupledom. Or do a girl’s night out (if you are an all-girls party). If you can’t the stand the MQ outdoors (Mush-quotient,) order in. When you have soul food, comforting drinks, great movies and lovely friends, who needs a date?

T

he transport department is gearing up to call for tenders for the high-security number plates following a Supreme Court order that the process should be complete before March 2012. The transport department will be drawing up plans to implement the project. The issue was in cold storage for the last six months as it was found to be a costly proposition. While the court has set a deadline, the government might seek some more time. An electronic chip would be installed in the number plate made of aluminium and coated with chrome. The chip fixed in the plate would allow the officials to track the vehicle. The transport department will advise the vehicle owners to fix the high security number plates at the earliest. The number plate will also have Ashoka Chakra inscribed in the middle.

The project got delayed because of various problems. It was supposed to have been done as early as 2005. “We have decided to hand over the responsibility of manufacturing and vending the high security number plates to APSRTC” said transport minister Botsa Satyanarayana. The State Road Transport Authority will assist APSRTC in this regard, he stated.

Botsa Satyanarayana, at an earlier meeting, said the APSRTC wanted to provide the number plates at a cost of less than `500 each. The transport department will enforce the new number plates in the twin cities as a pilot project. “The new number plates will display the chassis and engine number of the vehicle, apart from the registration number,” accord-

Crackers trigger hotel blaze FIRE Md Inkeshaf Ahmed ahmed.m@postnoon.com

P

olice Investigation into the fire mishap at Hotel Sitara , which is located behind LB Nagar police station, revealed some interesting facts. The accident which occurred last night was due to the negligence of organisers of the reception party which was being held on the second floor. The organisers carelessly burst fire crackers outside and in the process the flames from the crackers spread to the second floor and burnt the flexes hanging there. LB Nagar Inspector Sridhar Reddy

told Postnoon “The incident took place due to the negligence of the organisers of the party. They did not take proper steps while bursting crackers”. They have also filed a case against the organisers for negligence. On the other hand, the Fire Prevention department of GHMC has also launched a separate inquiry to find out whether the hotel had obtained a No Objection Certificate (NOC). Speaking to Postnoon, Additional Director of the fire prevention department, C Laxmi Prasad said,“We have launched an inquiry into the incident. We will visit the accident spot soon to assess the situation. If we find that the hotel did not have an NOC, then we will issue notices to the management and also initiate other steps.”

The story behind the news

Keiko Fukuda The renowned pioneer of women’s judo, 98-year-old Sensei Keiko Fukuda has become the first woman to achieve a tenth-degree black belt, the 9th Dan; the highest rank in the martial art and combat sport Judo. Throughout history, only sixteen people have ever achieved this honour. Fukuda began practising Judo in 1935 and is the sole surviving student of its founder, Kano Jiguro. She continues to teach Judo three times a week at a woman’s dojo

Amelia Earhart Amelia was the most famous woman aviator to be awarded the “U.S. Distinguished Flying Cross” for flying solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Apart from achieving a number of aviation records, she also authored many books based on her flying experiences which were very instrumental in the structuring of “The Ninety- Nines”, an organisation for female pilots. Earhart disappeared during a flight on July 2; 1937 over central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island; no trace was ever found.

WOMEN HALL OF FAME

16-year-old Dutch girl, Laura Dekker is the youngest ever to solo circumnavigate the globe. She had been at sea on and off for a little more than a year. Like Dekker, there have been some women who have done things extraordinary and explored arenas that no one ever had. We take a look Valentina Tereshkova

Gertrude Ederle

After being filtered out of four hundred applicants and then finally out of five finalists, Valentina was the first woman in space who was launched aboard Vostok 6 in 1963. During the 70.8 hour flight, Vostok 6 made 48 orbits of Earth. Upon completion of her mission, Tereshkova was honoured with the title Hero of the Soviet Union. She never flew again, but she did become a spokesperson for the Soviet Union and retired after the collapse of the Soviet Union. She still remains a noted name in Russia.

“People said women couldn’t swim the Channel but I proved they could,” said Gertrude Ederle who was most famous for being the first woman to swim the English Channel from France to England in 1926, only 19. She beat the men's world record by one hour and 59 minutes. After the win, she lost her hearing permanently and became a swimming instructor for deaf children. She was inducted in the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1965 and in the Women’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1980.

Felicity Aston A 33-year-old explorer from Kent in South-east England, Felicity Aston completed her exhausting journey over Antarctica after 59 days pulling two sledges for 1.084 miles in order to become the first woman in the world to cross Antarctica alone, without assistance. Because she had two stops to resupply, Guinness World Records said it could not recognise her achievement as a ‘solo’ mission. But it confirmed it had no other records of anyone crossing alone without assistance.

Junko Tabei Junko Tabei became the first woman in history to climb Mt Everest in 1975. Tabei was amongst the 15 women sent to take the challenging task to climb the Mt Everest by a Japanese newspaper and a broadcasting company. After losing other women and the local guides in an avalanche during the expedition, she was dug out by one of the Sherpa guides and lay unconscious for six minutes. It was twelve days after that fatal incident that Junko climbed the peak and set the record

A day after Chief Election Commissioner SY Quraishi wrote to President Pratibha Patil saying that the poll panel found Khurshid’s latest remarks “utterly contemptuous about the commission’s lawful direction to him”, a cautious Congress said it expected the law minister to follow the law. “EC is a constitutional body... Congress always wants all the Congressmen to speak as per norms of public life and law,” Congress general secre-

Arab League agrees to open talks with Syria’s opposition CAIRO: The Arab League said Sunday it had agreed to open contacts with Syria’s opposition and ask the United Nations to form a joint peacekeeping force to the nation, moves swiftly denounced by Syria. In Lebanon meanwhile, refugees from the Syrian city of Homs which is besieged by President Bashar al-Assad’s troops, gave graphic accounts of what they had endured. Arab League diplomats “will open channels of communication with the Syrian opposition and offer full political and financial support, urging (the opposition) to unify its ranks,” said a League statement. They would also “ask the UN Security Council to issue a decision on the formation of a joint UN-Arab peacekeeping force to oversee the implementation of a ceasefire.” After marathon talks in Cairo, the 22-member bloc announced a formal end of its own observer mission to Syria, suspended last month because of an upsurge in violence. Only Algeria and Lebanon expressed reservations about the resolution, an Arab League official said. “The Syrian Arab Republic categorically rejects the deci-

On the ground, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that at least 39 civilians had been killed on Sunday, many

in a relentless assault by President Bashar al-Assad's forces on the central protest city of Homs. After months of bloody clashes between

security forces and pro-democracy protestors, Saleh signed a deal in Saudi Arabia that effectively ends his reign but protects him from prosecution. Insurance industry sees negative growth Prudhvi Raju K prudhvi.k@postnoon.com

How did the policy change affect the sales of Unit linked policies (ULIPs) and the businesses? The policy change in ULIPs is in favour of the customer. The essence of the policy change is to make policies fairly priced and

n

The Audio People in City

transparent. It has brought down commissions of intermediaries (agents) to four per cent and benefited the customers. The agents, who used to sell these policies for higher commissions around 40 per cent earlier, felt it isn’t remunerative and started selling the traditional plans. As a result, the business is shifting from ULIPs to traditional policies. It is a worrisome to the industry. n How much is the difference in commission of traditional polices compared to ULIPs? There is a huge gap. The commissions in traditional policies are as high as 40 per cent and in the ULIPs, they are as low as 4-5 per cent. The regulator has to check this and optimise them in the range of 8-10 per cent to make it fair to the agent as well as the customer. n How much did industry lose in this case? The growth rates have fallen drastically and negative in most cases. The average industry negative growth rate is around three per cent. Earlier, the

industry was growing at 15 to 20 per cent. This is the most worrying growth in last 10 years. n What is the growth rate of term policies compared to conventional polices? The term plans are picking up as a trend. More people are buying term plans through different channels like online and group insurance route. The term plans are growing at around 15-20 per cent. I guess the growth rate of term plans is double that of conventional policies. n How do you foresee industry in these tough times? The long term business opportunity is huge for industry. The insurable population (middle income and high income segments) per cent is increasing with the increase of population. The income and GDP levels of the people are growing. The saving habits of the Indians are exceptionally high with 33 per cent of GDP gets saved in the country. Life time risks of people are also increasing because of changes happening in life style. These are all will be the drives for the growth of insurance industry.

NEW DELHI: As the number of middle-income families going on domestic vacations and business travellers on a tight budget keeps rising, international hoteliers are rushing in to capture the midmarket segment bridging the gap between luxury and budget hotels in India. The concept of mid-market hotels is relatively new to India. Industry experts say there exists a whole range of tourists between the budget travellers and the wellheeled. The bulk of leisure travellers are from the middle class and a large proportion of corporate travellers in India is mid-level

executives. They want all the trappings of a luxury hotel but at an affordable price. “With companies continuing to be more cost-conscious, and leisure travellers looking for value-for-money options that do

not compromise on quality, there is a clear gap in the mid-scale market,” said Chris Moloney, chief operating officer, South West Asia, Intercontinental Hotels Group (IHG). One of the key drivers behind

the booming Indian tourism, Moloney told IANS, was the burgeoning numbers of middle class “which has incredible headroom for growth”. A recent survey by the Confederation of Indian Industry and PricewaterhouseCoopers also identified the mid-market and budget segments as growth areas. IHG has signed a joint venture with Duet India Hotels Group (DIHL) to develop 19 new Holiday Inn Express hotels in more than 12 key cities by 2016 to cater to this segment. “We have taken 24 percent equity stake, making a multi-year investment of $30 million into the partnership,” said Moloney. Editorials KING KENNY LEAVES his crown shattered

L

iverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has finally apologised for his appalling attitude to questions regarding Luis Suarez’s refusal to shake Manchester United captain Patrice Evra’s hand before the match on Saturday. King Kenny is one of the icons of British football; as a players he shone and his sportsmanship was as impeccable. But after Saturday’s press conference where he lambasted the media for “picking on Suarez” he left his dignity on the floor. Dalglish has staked much on defending a player who has been convicted of racist abuse, the problem is that Suarez seems blasé in the face of rightfully-directed criticism and is leaving his supports with little room to manoeuvre. It was only after Liverpool’s American owners, Fenway Sports, stepped in bristling at the Suarez’s attitude that both Dalglish and Suarez were forced to apologise. Suarez has never apologised to Evra, and until he does, the matter will never be put to rest. And as long as it keeps simmering both teams will get no closure from what has been an embarrassing episode.

hen I was a chief of news bureau in a national daily, my reporting boss used to ask me: “Anything more?” just before hanging up after the daily review. While I mechanically used conclude saying ‘nothing’, always I wanted to say: “Everything is less, sir, including salary.” Irrespective of the weight of the pay check, repulsion to the income tax deduction among employees is nothing but a psychosomatic order — not disorder. It is natural. Every payday reminds the salaried class of the adage of ‘robbing Peter to pay Paul’. And never has a budget speech of a finance minister seemed music to the ears of salaried class. Come February, millions of employees await a hike in the taxable income limit. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance, headed by former finance minister Yashwant Sinha, is proposing to the Government to consider a raise in the personal income tax limit to `5 lakh from the present Rs1.8 lakh. In fact, the Direct Taxes Code (DTC), which is under review of the Standing Committee, has the I-T limit at `2 lakh, which means nothing to the common man. The committee may tell the government to raise the income tax limit to `3 lakh for this year and when the DTC is adopted and implemented from fiscal 2012-13, it could enhance it to `5 lakh. Exemptions actually widen the tax net. They imbibe fiscal discipline among tax payers and plug the leakages. Employees, however, cannot find too many ways to stay out of the tax net. I strongly advocate the proposed recommendations of Yashwant Sinha committee. It is planning to propose four slabs, while recommending that shall there be no tax up to Rs5 lakh. The range of the slabs are: `5 lakh-`10 lakh; `10 lakh-`20 lakh; `20 lakh-`30 lakh; and above `30 lakh. There cannot be more perfect and prag-

I’ve been a regular reader of Postnoon for the past few months and I can safely say that I love it! I appreciate the fact that Postnoon has been giving me a lot of variety in terms of the news that I get, unlike other dailies. But what surprised me the most was when I opened my Saturday edition and saw the new and revamped look of the paper. It’s design is almost on par with the tabloids I used to read in the US. The content too is of a higher quality that I could have hoped for. I appreciate your team’s effort to keep the paper abreast with international standards. Keep it up. Rakesh Ramaraju, Banjara Hills

I picked up Postnoon for the first time on Saturday. Your lead story on black magic was very interesting. We keep reading about crimes relating to black magic but I, and many like me, think that they are sporadic incidents. But to see the actual numbers and the scope of the problem was very disturbing. These are problems of real people that we should first be addressing. The government should wake up to the problem and bring in stringent laws. Primary education in villages must be improved so as to eliminate superstitions.

matic approach than this, considering the double-digit inflation, spiralling prices of petroleum products and monthly grocery. A person with `10 lakh to `15 lakh annual income doesn’t reach there overnight. He or she passes through the rough and tumble of the chosen profession and would be usually in their middle-age, a family to take care of and a bulk of their pay going towards debt servicing. For instance, a person with two children and drawing an annual salary of `12 lakh in 2011 would have the following commitments from which he/she cannot escape. A car loan of `8,000 to `15,000 a month, a personal loan (raised to meet some exigency) of `5,000 to `10,000, a household expenditure (including milk, newspaper, cable TV/DTH, provisions, vegetables, laundry, petrol, water and electricity, and sundries) of `25,000. More than half the salary has gone here.

What I have not added here is the most painful housing loan. Usually middle class employees raise housing loans to save on income tax without calculating their monthly commitments, increase in interest rates whenever the Reserve Bank slaps a hike in its policy rates, skyrocketing commutation charges between office and home. When they could get a beautiful accommodation in an upmarket neighbourhood for `20,000 a month very close to their workplace, they end up paying an equal amount or more in some cases towards monthly instalment and stay a score of miles away from their work, enduring the pain of an emptying purse towards fuel bill. Of late, budget speeches are crushing the aspirations of the tax payer under the jackboots of the finance ministers. And a sulking industry too sings paeans for record purpose or resents very subtly, as if it’s just moaning.

Watch what you wear Good article! I personally love watches, so could totally relate to this article. And to top it all, there was LDC on the cover page!!! You have correctly said that people are yet to wake up to the power of accessories that bolster their image. Articles like this definitely help us to be better turned out for events, formal and informal. Good work Postnoon. Deepthi Karingattil Hyderabad

DIABETIC? You can control it Ranjani Rajendra ranjani.r@postnoon.com

W

hen 52-year-old Reena Gupta was diagnosed with diabetes she was devastated. You might wonder why considering most of India’s population deals with this chronic ailment? But for Reena, this meant rearranging her life extensively. Long hours at work, travel and an active social life were the norm — not to mention a love for all things sweet and fried. At this juncture of her life when her career demanded most of her attention, diabetes was not something she was prepared for. Not only did this mean that she now had to be extremely careful with what she ate, she also couldn’t handle the stress of a hectic schedule as well as before thanks to the exhaustion and constant weakness. For India, that has the notorious tag of being the diabetes

capital of the world, such occurrences are almost commonplace. While diabetes may not halt life in its tracks it does put a spanner in the works for most busy executives who find it hard to adjust to a new life — one filled with restrictions. This is where Laparoscopic Ileal Interposition Surgery steps in to offer diabetics a hassle-free life ahead.

What is it? Developed by Dr Aureo de Paula of Brazil, this surgery is proving to be very helpful in controlling diabetes. During the procedure, surgeons move a section of the ilium (the last part of the small intestine) into the upper small intestinal area where food particles will reach immediately after a meal. When the food comes into contact with this it releases the hormone GLP-1, which acts on the B-cells in the pancreas to secrete insulin. This in turn helps control blood sugar. “During this surgery we stimulate the heart of the digestive tract — ilium. When you

Cost of surgery: `4 lakh (approx) move the ilium upwards it helps stimulate hormones that regulate glucose in the body. Through this surgery we can effectively control diabetes. Though we can’t say it can cure diabetes, it is safe to say the diabetes can be in remission using this procedure,” says Dr Aureo.

Who can get it done? “This surgery is typically conducted on people with Type II diabetes as there are still some existing good cells in the pancreas, so there is scope for improvement. But in Type I diabetes this is not possible as the cells in the pancreas are already destroyed,” says Dr Surendra Ugale, of Kirloskar Hospital, who conducted this surgery for the first time in Hyderabad in 2008. While selecting a patient, doctors check for factors like

the severity of the disease and age of the patient. “Usually the cut off age is 70. Also if the disease is mild or has been mild and stable for a long time we don’t advise surgery. We usually recommend it to patients who can’t seem to get their blood sugar levels under control despite medication or if the disease has begun affecting other organs. The patient’s ability to respond to the treatment is also a key factor is deciding eligibility,” says Dr Ugale.

How effective is it? According to experts, a patient can stop taking medication within six months of undergoing the surgery. The success rate of the surgery is said to be nearly 85 to 90 per cent, with even patients with severe diabetes reporting that it has remised to the mild stage. The effects of the surgery, says Dr Ugale, is supposed to last a lifetime.

Why it is good? “Once a patient gets this surgery done and their blood sugar levels are under control, it also significantly cuts down the risk of kidney failure, hypertension and cholesterol, for which diabetes is a risk factor,” explains Dr Ugale. Since the surgery is done laparoscopically (key hole surgery) scarring is minimal and also means the patient can get back to work within a week or maximum 10 days.

What is diabetes?

D

iabetes is a disorder that affects the way your body uses food for energy. Normally, the sugar you take in is digested and broken down to a simple sugar, known as glucose. The glucose then circulates in your blood where it waits to enter cells to be used as fuel. Insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, helps move the glucose into cells. A healthy pancreas adjusts the amount of insulin based on the level of glucose. But, if you have diabetes, this process breaks down, and blood sugar levels become too high.

However, breast feeding is not recommended when the mother is receiving chemotherapy as the drugs can be secreted in the milk which can harm the baby. n Size of the breast has a bearing on the amount of milk produced during breast feeding Fact: Size of the breast has no bearing on the amount of milk produced. n Breast cancer does not occur during pregnancy and lactation Fact: Breast cancer can occur during pregnancy and lactation. Although the incidence of breast cancer in women who breast feed is less than those who do not, women must be aware of the changes that pregnancy and lactation have created in the breasts. A pregnant woman usually finds that her breasts are lumpy and tender and a lactating breast feels full and lumpy. Although these are normal changes, being ‘breast aware’ is absolutely important even during pregnancy and lactation. Should there be any new changes, a specialist consultation is essential to rule out any abnormality. n Breast feeding should be stopped when there a breast infection Fact: Breast feeding should not be stopped when there is breast infection (mastitis). In fact, breast feeding keeps the ducts patent and may help improve breast infection. Ice packs should not be used to treat breast infection as it can harden the milk. It is important to see a specialist as soon as there are signs of infection. Antibiotics are used to control the infection. If an abscess has developed, an ultrasound guided aspiration should be attempted. If all the conservative measures fail, a formal incision and drainage of abscess should be performed. EXERCISE CAN UNDO EFFECTS OF

MATERNAL OBESITY SYDNEY: Physical activity can help offsprings undo the negative metabolic effects passed on to them by their obese mothers, a study reveals. An overweight mother can powerfully impact the next generation, altering central appetite circuits in the brain and contributing to increased fat deposits and metabolic disease in their children. However, a new study on rodents, found that exercise was able to dramatically reverse these

impacts, the effect being most pronounced in juveniles who both exercised and consumed a low-fat diet, reported the journal Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Disease. “Most, if not all, of the negative consequences of maternal obesity can be reversed through voluntary exercise in the next generation,” said study leader Margaret Morris, professor at the University of New South Wales School of Medical Sciences.

Offspring from obese female rats were found to be 12 per cent heavier three weeks after birth than the control offspring, according to a university statement. They also recorded higher fat deposits, plasma lipids, blood pressure and induced glucose intolerance. When the pups also ate a high-fat diet the weight gap increased to 37 per cent. However, when the pups born to obese mothers were allowed to exercise, their fat mass, plasma lipids, blood pressure and insulin resistance were reduced. Offspring who ate healthy food as well as engaged in exercise reached metabolic levels similar to control rats born to normal weight mothers and raised on standard chow. These findings are based on the doctoral research of Sultana Rajia.

ou’ve just learnt that you’re pregnant and are thrilled to bits. You’ve already begun making elaborate plans for your baby and nothing could seem to dim the joy. Plus, you’ve been expecting to glow like an angel and feel thoroughly pampered. Instead, you find you’re drained out most of the time and simply can’t seem to hold down anything you eat or drink and spend a better part of your time staring at the toilet bowl. Read on… n No matter how nauseous you feel or how much the sight or smell of food repulses you at this time, try and eat something. An empty stomach can increase nausea. So don’t stay hungry. n Salted crackers are a good idea. Keep some handy. Having some of them first thing in the morning can help settle your stomach. n Despite your love for fried, spicy and acidic foods, it might be wiser to stay away from these while you’re going through the ordeal of morning sickness. n Foods that are high in vitamin B can help decrease nausea. So load up on whole grains and green leafy vegetables. n Ginger can help ease nausea as well. So try sucking on ginger flavoured lozenges or drinking ginger flavoured lemon juice. Or simply use ginger in your cooking. n Drink plenty of water between meals. Adding a slice of lemon can help as well. It’s important to stay hydrated. n Avoid iron supplements in the first trimester unless you’re anaemic. It can be hard on the stomach. So check with your doctor before you pop any. The time you’re feeling close to your normal self is a good time to eat something. Try and eat healthy food and do squeeze in some exercise time to help you feel better. Source: www.ehow.com

ou have to come because we have something for everyone! Whether you’re a techie, an aspiring dancer, an amateur filmmaker, or are just looking for fun. This is a technicalcum-cultural festival with some amazing pro-shows lined up! If not elsewhere, I think BITS Pilani Hyderabad is the place to be this weekend.” Says Raghuram Reddy Salguti, the president of the Students’ Union, BITS Pilani, Hyderabad campus, when asked about why students should head to Pearl World 1-2. Pearl World 1-2 is BITS Pilani Hyderabad’s annual festival, which is going to take place from the 16th to 19th of this month at the college campus. This festival began as a city-wide fest in 2010, and went national in 2011, and this is the third edition of the fest.

Armed with a mind boggling set of competitions like ‘Till deaf do us apart’, a nationwide search for India’s best rock band, or ‘Glitterati’, a fashion parade at Pearl, or even ‘FragLore’, a LAN gaming tournament, and performances by Benny Dayal for the

Bollywood act, Thurisaz for the International Rock act, and David and Ela Rose for the International DJ act, Pearl ‘12 world 1-2 is set to impress. With an expected turn out of over 8,000 students from all across the country, the organising committee is gathering forces to make sure the event goes off without a glitch. “Preparation for this fest began last semester itself and almost every student has been involved in one department or the other. The Students’ Union and the Student Co-ordinators for various departments of course have had a major role, but almost every student has contributed to the organising of the fest. Also, our professors have been very co-operative and extended a helping hand whenever needed. Now comes the executing part of it, for which we expect about 300 volunteers to help us out!” says the team. For ANY details about this festival, events and registrations,

check out their official website and their Facebook page. Concludes Raghuram, “Everyone’s excited about the fest! We just can’t wait for our exams to get over.” So if the town looks deserted this weekend, you know where all the action is happening!

LECTURER SPEAKS How long has it been since you began teaching? Have you always wanted to teach? I have been teaching for the last three years. I always wanted to be a teacher. In fact, my passion towards teaching intensified after seeing great teachers during my masters, doctoral and post-doctoral research period. l Physics is a kind of a subject that needs to be understood. What kind of an approach do you take towards teaching this subject? l

My approach of teaching physics starts with giving the students a rough physical picture of the problem followed by a thorough mathematical analysis. Whenever possible, I try to experimentally demonstrate the concepts in the classroom. l You must be aware of the new coaching institutions that have come up. Do you think they help in the long run? I believe that most of the coaching institutions impart good training in basic science subjects. However, the students MUST make sure that

they get a thorough understanding of the basic concepts along with getting trained to answer questions swiftly. A good grasp of fundamentals will help the students to do well in the future. l What kind of a rapport do you share with your students? I try to create an atmosphere such that the students do not feel any sort of inhibitions in approaching me to clarify or share their difficulties. I do not find a need to support them emotionally as our campus is very vibrant and positive. l What according to you is

your biggest challenge as a professor? The biggest challenge as a professor is to keep up the enthusiasm Kannan on a day-to-day basis and thereRamaswamy fore creating an interest among students in the subject being Asst taught. Professor, l Any message for aspiring Physics Group engineering students? BITS-Pilani We live in a knowledge-based Hyderabad world. Therefore, my message to Campus aspiring engineers is to gather knowledge and create new technical knowledge that will transform our country into a developed nation in the near future.

With the hint of summer setting in and the sun beaming in all its glory, one concern that tops every girl’s summer list — the fairness factor and most importantly, how to avoid sweat from smearing makeup? So what’s the chosen shade card for the scorching summers? Summer months are what makes one fret over tanning arms and face and worry about the break outs. International beauty icon, Shireen Khan feels summers should not restrict you from going bold. “Lots of red, cheery pink and mauvish purples are going to be the in thing this season. Red family is in, lighter in the day and brighter in the

evenings. Also, if one is going bright on the lips, eye makeup should be subtle and mascaras are really in. One can do away with eye liners this summer and replace them with nice blue and green eye pencils.” She says, adding, “One can use foundation powder, which acts like a compact as well and

pink peachy colours and other pastel shades will do the trick.” he suggests. The metallic shades, eternal smoky effect for the starry evenings with an added sparkle and a few more classics like the reds and browns to brighten the evening could adorn your makeup pouch. Celebrity makeup artist Sandy says while days are going to be light shades, evenings are going to brighten it up equally. “It’s of course the smoky look for the evenings and bright shades like red and orange would be in. Apart from that, for oily skin, one should avoid creamy foundations, which are good for dry skin. People with

The rest of the face can be kept free with just a touch,” he shares, adding, “Also one can opt for gel-based liners, which don’t smudge and for lipsticks one should keep it matted.” Although, there is a beeline of products to keep you painted, polished and bronzed, a common tip that all beauty experts suggest is to use a good sun block and keep yourself hydrated. So while the weather heats up, you can cool yourself with lots of liquids and cool colours in your kitty.

I believe there’s space for good films K

iran Meegada has quite a few things in common with Sekhar Kammula and Deva Katta. Both of them quit their jobs in the US to pursue a career in filmmaking and now Kiran Meegada is following a similar path. “Sekhar, Deva Katta and Krish are a big source of inspiration for me and I am a big fan of Majid Majidi,” Kiran says. Ask him what drove him to take a sabbatical from his job, he replies, “After working for more than twelve years in the US, life had become quite comfortable and I felt that my creative side was slowly dying. And I desperately wanted to do something about it.” When he was in class 9, his mother took him to an excursion to the Talakona forest. “I ended up spending a whole day on the sets of the Venkatesh-Divya Bharati starrer Bobbili Raja. I loved the experience of being on a film set,” Kiran reminiscences. But he didn't exactly plunge into filmmaking right after his graduating from college. “Family comes first,” he smiles, adding, “I have explored life and I believe that my way of storytelling is way better now.” Before turning director, for many years, he was the single point of contact for several Telugu filmmakers who wanted to

shoot films in the US. “I used to take care of the production and in the process I worked on a few films like Swagatham, Chinthakayala Ravi, Sangamam and E Preethi,” he says. His debut film My Heart is Beating, which he has co-directed along with his friend Arun Rudra, is a romcom set in the US and narrates a love story between two people who find it difficult to express their feelings. “I had met Arun though a common friend Srikanth Galla and initially Arun wrote the basic story and later both of us worked on fine-tuning the script. Later, we got in touch with Siva Somayajula who wrote the dialogues for the film and then we pitched the story to Rajasekhar who liked it,” Kiran informs. Incidentally, it's the first Telugu film to have been made by a director duo and also the first Telugu film to be entirely shot in the US. Revanth, Rajitha, Srini Kolla and Ashwin Reddy are part of the cast and Kiran is full of praises for his team. “Sri Atluri introduced me to Revanth and I am sure that he will go places in his career. The others also have done a good job,” Kiran says. So what's it like to be sharing credit with another director? “We have had our creative differences at time but it was always about how we

could improve composing a shot. We were on the same page from the beginning,” Kiran replies. There are plenty of romcoms made in Telugu every year. We ask him what sets his film apart? “Apart from being a love story set in the US, there's something for everyone to connect with the story. There's at least one member in every family who has been to the US. Besides, it's an honest film. I believe there's space for good films,” he signs off.

egastar Amitabh Bachchan, who underwent two abdominal surgeries on Saturday, tweeted fans about his condition as soon as he could from the hospital bed and thanked them for their wishes, which he feels never fails. Big B’s scheduled abdominal surgery went off smoothly on Saturday morning at the SevenHills Hospital here. His abdominal pain was due to an injury he suffered during shooting of Coolie in 1982. “Took long because 2 surgeries had to be done on either side..yes there is pain, but nothing good in life ever achieved without it!,” Big B tweeted. “Back ..!! Thank you for your prayers.. your love and wishes never fail..indebted for life, one that I shall never be able to pay back,” the 69-year-old wrote.

nown for her unconventional choice of scripts, Kalki Koechlin says it’s time Bollywood filmmakers sat back and got the idea of commercial cinema right. The actress, who also supports bold portrayal of women on the big screen, says filmmakers should avoid mixing entertainment with a moral story. “I find that a lot of times what’s wrong with commercial cinema is not the subject, but how when

people are making an action film they end up putting ‘gyaan’ in it. It’s not going to work,” Kalki, 28, said. “A lot of people are still very confused when they write a script. They put a very serious subject and a light subject together. They try to put everything into one film to try to please everyone,” said the actress who picks Dabangg as one of her favourite masala films. IANS

Camille Grammer’s Romance Heats Up

Black Women in Music Gala R honour for Kelly

K

elly Rowland was honoured for her role in the music industry this week. The X Factor UK judge made an appearance at Essence’s 3rd Annual Black Women in Music Gala where she was among other respected guests in the black entertainment industry. Rowland, who was acknowl-

edged alongside industry executive/former Motown chief Sylvia Rhone, attended with fellow Destiny’s Child band member Michelle Williams. The TV talent show panelist and rapper Eve were some of the stars to perform at the event. Essence editor-in-chief Constance CR White called the artist “remarkable”.

eal Housewives of Beverly Hills star Camille Grammer, who began dating attorney Dimitri Charalambopoulos late last year, says her relationship is stronger than ever. “We’re very happy and we’re enjoying each other’s company,” Grammer, 43, tells Andy Cohen on the Real Housewives raucous reunion show. Charalambopoulos, who is eight years younger than Grammer, is “sweet,” according to her costar Lisa Vanderpump. “He’s quiet and

reserved,” Kyle Richards added. “It’s very cute the way he stares at Camille.” According to Grammer, her new guy gets along with her kids, too. “They like him a lot,” she says. “He spends a lot time with them.”

Magic Screen Steven Spielberg’s new war drama War Horse might not be as good as Saving Private Ryan or Schindler’s List, but it does reinforce his finesse in narrating a heart warming tale

W

ar Horse is as much about survival as it is about freedom. Steven Spielberg puts a horse named Joey, which manages to survive the war that wrecks havoc in Europe. While there have been several films about how human beings dealt with war and suffering, we are never told how animals like horses react when they are put in arduous conditions. In all probability they are either shot dead when they become too weak or they die a slow, painful death, unable to recover from the wounds. Adapted from a 1982 children’s novel of the same name, written by Michael Morpurgo, Spielberg

shows great class in narrating this heart warming tale. Albert Narracott (Jeremy Irvine) trains a horse named Joey to plough his field in Devon, England; however, his father sells Joey to the army to pay his dues to the landlord. A cav-

Tameka Raymond, whose divorce from Usher was finalised in November 2009, requested $15,000 for her lawyer’s fees plus $35,000 in other costs, according to a website. The further costs reportedly are for hiring a private investigator, maintenance of expert witnesses, obtaining out-of-state testimonies and cancelling her Saks 5th Avenue credit card.

he pop music princess was a vision in pink at the MusiCares Person of the Year tribute to Sir Paul McCartney. Perry was one of the last celebs to hit the red carpet at the Los Angeles Convention Center in a sleeveless silk and lace pink gown from French designer Alexis Mabille. But it was the Teenage Dream singer’s hat that grabbed everyone’s attention — think gigantic pink flower in full bloom. Diamond earrings, flawless makeup (va-vava voom red lipstick!) and a peek of her still-blue hair completed the look. Perry remained silent while taking pics and declining interviews. She was one of the many superstars on the night’s lineup, giving a soulful performance of Hey, Jude. She used a pink music stand, a conductor’s baton and a crystal-covered microphone.

25

alry officer named Captain Nicholls, who buys Joey, promises Albert that he will take care of the horse and if possible, he’ll even return it to Albert after the war. However, things go out of control once the war starts.

War films usually have an undercurrent of hope despite all the destruction and loss of lives and War Horse is no different. The way Joey falls in to the hands of different people as the war progresses can only be a result of divine intervention. One of the best scenes in the film include two soldiers from both sides helping Joey in No Man’s land. It’s amazing how Spielberg gives a reason to smile in the middle of a war scene and there lies his finesse. John Williams’ score is dazzling and so is Janusz Kamiski’s cinematography. At over two hours, War Horse is definitely long and loses steam at times, but the emotional quotient behind the film overshadows these flaws. It isn’t a typical war film but ends up being a heart warming tale of freedom and hope.

KAKURO

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Wales make it two out of two Julian Guyer

CARDIFF: Leigh Halfpenny scored two tries in a second-half surge as Wales made it two wins out of two in this season's Six Nations with a 27-13 victory over Scotland at the Millennium Stadium here on Sunday. The match was level at 3-3 at half-time but tries from wing Alex Cuthbert and full-back Halfpenny, who crossed twice on his way to a match haul of 22 points, saw Wales pull away. For Scotland, defeat left them searching for a first win in Cardiff since 2002 and facing another battle to avoid the wooden spoon following last weekend's 137 loss to England. But new fly-half Greig Laidlaw, in for the retired Dan Parks, did score Scotland's first try in five Tests and was responsible for all their points. Scotland's cause was not helped by being down to 13 men early in the second half after backs Nick de Luca and Rory Lamont were both sin-binned and two of Wales's tries came with Scotland a man down. "Yellow cards are always crucial in this day and age so everybody has to work on their discipline," said Wales flanker and man-of-the-match Dan Lydiate. Scotland coach Andy Robinson said his side had been punished for failing to take their chances.

A jubilant Chennai Rhinos

here were enough stars on and off the ground to make up for a starless night sky at the Uppal Stadium on Sunday. Yet the second edition of the Celebrity Cricket League ended mired in controversy. The final was a replay of last year’s: Chennai Rhinos pipped Karnataka Bulldozers. As was promised, the match was thrilling. It rocked the crowd till the end. Batting first, Chennai Rhinos posted 161 for four. Though he missed out on a well deserved century, Vikranth, CR’s vice-captain, steadied his team that was reeling from the early loss of opener Jiiva, who was given out lbw off the first ball of the innings. Vikranth stood unbeaten on 95 off 69 hitting 14 fours and a six. Only Prithvi (20 off 22 balls) saw double figures apart from him. Though Karnataka Bulldozers did not have as bad a start as their rivals, they too were shaky when they lost their talisman Rajeev cheaply for five. He had scored 154 runs in 63 balls in the semifinal against Kerala Strikers at Vizag. Vice-captain Dhruva and J Karthik rose up to the occasion and initiated the rescue work. When matters seemed to slip from the Rhinos' hands, Vikranth once again struck: he bowled Dhruva, who was at 58 from

46 balls. Vikranth then ‘outdid’ a Vinoo Mankad to dismiss J Karthik: he ran into bowl and ran out Karthik who was out of the crease at the nonstriker’s end. This did not go down well with the Karnataka Bulldozers, as this came without a warning, especially when they were so close to victory; they needed two off two balls. The game resumed only to see the

new batsman T Chandra getting out on the last ball and the Rhinos winning by a run. From here started the real show. Karnataka Bulldozers, apparently miffed over the way Karthik was dismissed, walked off the field without waiting for the presentation ceremony to start. The Rhinos, who were euphoric that they could retain their title, were too busy doing victory laps and celebrating with the bevy of beauties that had come to support them, and took some time to realise what was happening. The presentation ceremony started without the Bulldozers. A little later, Mumbai Heroes captain Suniel Shetty and owner Sohail Khan somehow succeeded in pacifying a fuming Ashok Keny, owner of Karnataka Bulldozers, and brought him on to the dais. But Keny erupted when he was denied a chance to speak. He spat that he had come down as he was promised that he would get to express his views on the dais while Sohail and Suniel were trying their best to mollify him. Actor Sarath Kumar was also seen trying to placate him, but in vain. A visibly upset and furious Keny left the field ‘spewing venom’ while CCL authorities stood limp with a blank look on their faces. Officials and security guards were busy shooing away media personnel: some said, “Clear out, the show’s over.” It is only fitting that an event in which film stars are involved has everything that makes it filmy. Only one thing was missing: a better ending.

"I'm proud of the way we went out and played the game," the former England flanker and coach said. "We had opportunities to score before half-time and didn't and after half-time we missed the restart and Wales took their opportunities," he added. "We played very well and we're hurting and disappointed." Wales were forced into a late change when captain Sam Warburton withdrew shortly before kick-off with the 'dead leg' that had seen him miss the second half of the tournament opening 23-21 win against Ireland in Dublin last weekend. Scarlets flanker Aaron Shingler was handed his Wales debut in Warburton's place on the openside, with former skipper Ryan Jones taking over as captain. Scotland's request for the Millennium's retractable roof to be closed, in order to provide ideal conditions for running rugby, was granted. But in World Cup semi-finalists Wales they were up against one of the best ball-playing sides in the Six Nations. Scotland had the first scoring chance only for Laidlaw's fifth minute penalty from 40 metres out to drift wide.

The fall’s harder from the top Twelfth Man Babu Kalyanpur

E

ngland were trapped in a web of spin in the sands of the UAE and were left bluefaced after the whitewash by Pakistan. This was England’s first series after gaining the No 1 spot last summer. Now the heat is on them as England play Sri Lanka and later India in the Subcontinent. And if England do not get act together quickly, then they like India will slip down the ranking ladder. Surprisingly, all of England’s top order failed miserably against the brilliant bowling of Saeed Ajmal and Abdur Rahman.

It seemed as if the English batsmen were in a trance, getting bowled or leg before frequently. They were literally caught on the back foot. The ultimate insult came in the third and final Test when, after dismissing Pakistan for a mere 99, they collapsed to another defeat. England’s biggest downfall was the lack of positive attitude. There were times when England’s batsmen played out maidens after maidens. Even a small target of just 144 in the second Test was not achieved as England plummeted to a 72-run defeat. England’s approach was miscalculated. They preferred to stay back, defend and hope for the best. If they had instead used their feet and attacked, the record could have been different.

LAST YEAR, INDIA WAS PANNED WHEN THEY LOST

NO.1 RANKING TO ENGLAND. CAN SOME OF OUR FORMER CRICKETERS PLEASE STAND UP AND TELL ENGLAND WHAT IS WRONG WITH THEM – WITH LOTS OF PURE VITRIOL, OF COURSE.

When England won the Ashes last year, they were maintaining a run rate of four or over right through the series. Against Pakistan, they barely managed to get to two. The middle order was so miserable that often the scorecard read like a telephone number. By doing that, the team did great

injustice to the bowlers. All of England’s bowlers gave sterling performances. Both Stuart Broad and James Anderson came up with wicket-taking spells. The most heartening aspect was the return of Monty Panesar. He took 14 wickets with two fivewicket hauls and nearly upstaged Graeme Swann in the spin department. Pakistan confirmed their good work in the last year with their most convincing series victory in recent times. Lacking big stars, the Pakistani batting line-up did a good job in getting decent totals to let Ajmal and Rahman do their work. This has to be Ajmal’s series. He turned the ball sharply and his doosra worked well. He toyed with the England batsmen whenever he came on.

The unsung Rahman had a great series too. Umar Gul and Mohammed Hafeez chipped in whenever they got the opportunity. Another pleasing aspect for Pakistan was that the younger players contributed in difficult situations. Azhar Ali got a brilliant hundred to shape Pakistan’s victory in the third Test and top the averages. Asad Shaiq did not make big scores but his innings made a difference in the low-scoring series. Back last year when England gained the top spot, former cricketers and critics came down hard on India, dissecting them and pouring scorn. Now the boot is on the other foot. Can some of our former cricketers please stand up and tell England what is wrong with them – with lots of pure vitriol, of course.

The 41-year-old American fired a final round eight-under par 64 for a 17under total of 269, winning by two strokes and ending the hopes of Woods, who closed with a three-over 75. “It feels amazing,” said Mickelson, who rallied from a six-shot deficit in the final round. “Hopefully this is one of a few I will win this year because I am starting to feel pretty good.” Third round leader Charlie Wi of South Korea was second after shooting a even-par 72 to finish on 271. Mickelson outfought Woods by getting off to a quick start with a superb opening stretch of one eagle and three birdies in his first six holes and then

saving par twice by sinking two long putts on the back nine. Mickelson, who got off to a rocky start this season, picked up $1.15 million in first-place prize money in posting his 40th career PGA triumph and first victory since the Houston Open 10 months ago. “This gives me a lot of confidence and erases the doubt,” Mickelson said. It was the 30th time the two US golfing giants have gone head-to-head, with Mickelson 5-0 against Woods in their last five meetings in a final round. Overall they are an even 13-13-4 in head-to-head contests. “Before I won five I got spanked pretty good,” Mickelson said. Mickelson entered the day six shots off the lead, but because of his blazing start he was able to make that up quickly in the first six holes. He began his round with a birdie on the par-5 second and then parred the third hole. He then made birdies on No. 4 and No. 5 and an eagle on the par-5 sixth to

get him to 14-under on the tournament. Wi, playing in the final group behind Mickelson and Woods, then bogeyed No. 6, giving Mickelson a three-shot lead. Mickelson had three birdies on the back nine, including his shot of the day on the par-four 13th hole where he hit his second shot to four feet from the hole and drained the putt. Mickelson saved par twice on the back nine with a pair of 30-foot plus putts. The first one on No. 12 came after Woods had just holed out from the green side bunker for a birdie and the second came on No. 15 when Mickelson bombed another into the cup. Woods worked hard all week to get himself into contention then had another Sunday where he couldn’t close the door. “It is frustrating,” Woods said. “I had a chance. All I needed was to get off to a good start today and I didn’t do that.”

third consecutive Spanish winner of the $2.5 million Dubai Desert Classic when he won on Sunday with a final-round four-under par 68. The 27-year-old, who follows in the footsteps of Miguel Angel Jimenez in 2010 and Alvaro Quiros last year, tallied 18-under par 270 to win by one shot over England’s world number three Lee Westwood and Scotland’s Stephen Gallacher. The win, only his second on the European Tour for the world No119, is expected to lift him to around 60th in the rankings. His previous win the 2009 Austrian Open, where he had closed with a round of 60. Germany’s Marcel Siem was in sole fourth place at 15-under par 273, while world number two Rory McIlroy endured another frustrating day on the greens before a birdie on the final hole lifted him to tied fifth position at 14-under par. Also finishing on 274 were South African George Coetzee, Scot Scott Jamieson and Denmark’s Soren Kjeldsen. On a tough windy day at the Majlis course of the Emirates Golf Club, Cabrera-Bello was bogey-free, and while his birdie on the 17th hole proved crucial to break the deadlock against Westwood and Gallacher, it was his incredible par save from under the trees on the 16th that turned out to be the key moment. “I am just so happy,” said Cabrera-Bello, who was playing ahead of the leadergroup which comprised Westwood and Gallacher. “I played well throughout the week and am delighted to finish ahead of such a good field this week. This is unbelievable. “When I saw that we were tied for the lead, I thought I could deliver the first punch by making a birdie. “That would put some pressure on them. So, the birdie was important, but equally important was the fact that I managed to avoid making a bogey on the 16th after that errant tee shot.” Westwood, who was looking to go one better than his two runners-up finish in Dubai Desert Classic, began well by making an eagle two on the par-4 second hole, but he could not make his upand-down from the fringe on the par-5 18th hole.

ZAMBIAN DREAMS COME ALIVE

Zambia's national football team players celebrate victory against Ivory Coast at the stade de l'amitie in Libreville Nick Reeves

LIBREVILLE: Zambia conjured a shock when they toppled starstudded Ivory Coast 8-7 in a penalty shoot-out to claim their first ever Africa Cup of Nations title on Sunday. With the sides goalless after extra time Zambia’s Stoppila Sunzu converted the magic spot kick after Arsenal striker Gervinho missed for the Elephants. The result meant misery for hot favourites Ivory Coast, who failed to claim the title despite not conceding a goal throughout the entire competition until Sunday’s shootout. It also revived unhappy memories for Didier Drogba, who missed a penalty in the second

half of normal time, and company of their 2006 penalty shoot out final defeat to Egypt in Cairo. Zambia, motivated by the memory of the 1993 national team wiped out in a plane crash off the Libreville coast, went into the 2012 climax as outsiders. But they covered themselves with glory, hassling and harrowing their way to the penalty lottery, and then holding their nerve to prevail in the dramatic, barely watchable denouement. Zambia coach Herve Renard commented: “This represents something enormous, something which appeared unrealisable before the competition began. “I know we’re not the best but we have a strength and force that animated our team.”

A night of parties LUSAKA: Zambian supporters poured into the streets of the capital Lusaka in the early hours of Monday morning and partied to celebrate the first Africa Cup of Nations title won by the copperrich country. Confident of victory before the kick-off of a final won 8-7 on penalties against Ivory Coast after 120 goalless minutes, thousands clad in the orange, green and black of the national team blew horns after an emotional success. The final was staged in Gabonese capital Libreville, off whose coast a military aircraft car-

Liverpool condemn Suarez Steve Griffiths

LONDON: Luis Suarez has apologised to Patrice Evra for refusing to shake hands with the Manchester United defender, but the Liverpool striker was still subjected to a strong dressing down from his club as the Reds finally tried to bring an end to the simmering race row on Sunday. Suarez said sorry for his failure to acknowledge Evra’s hand during the traditional pre-match greeting at Old Trafford on Saturday as he came face to face with United’s captain for the first time since being given an eight-match ban for racially

abusing the Frenchman at Anfield in October. Suarez finally showed some contrition in a statement expressing his regret for his actions. “I have spoken with the manager [Kenny Dalglish] since the game at Old Trafford and I realise I got things wrong,” Suarez said on Liverpool’s official website. “I’ve not only let him down, but also the club and what it stands for and I’m sorry. I made a mistake and I regret what happened.” But Suarez’s actions and Reds manager Kenny Dalglish’s refusal to publicly condemn his player’s behaviour in the

immediate aftermath of the match may well have prompted the club’s American owner John Henry to take control of the situation judging by the sudden out-pouring of apologies. Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre led the criticism of Suarez as he revealed the Uruguayan had told them he would shake hands with Evra, only to change his mind on the pitch. “We are extremely disappointed Luis Suarez did not shake hands with Patrice Evra before yesterday’s game. The player had told us beforehand that he would, but then chose not to do so,” Ayre said.

rying the 1993 Zambian national squad plunged into the Atlantic Ocean killing all 30 players, officials and crew on board. French coach Herve Renard and a squad containing only one player who lines up for a first division club in Europe vowed to bring the trophy back to Lusaka as a tribute to those who died. Zambia went football crazy in the hours leading up the final and even heavy rain could not dampen the spirits of Chipolopolo (Copper Bullets) fans as they crowded into bars and clubs or watched the match at home.

Ivory Coast coach Francois Zahoui said: “We didn’t expect such challenging a final. “This is a big disappointment for us. We didn’t have much luck, we missed the penalty in normal time, then perhaps lost a bit of confidence. “We go back to Abidjan with not too much shame. I think we’ve played a good game. I congratulate Zambia.” There was electric tension once the penalty shoot out got underway, with Kolo Toure missing the Ivorians seventh spot kick, but Zambia’s Kalaba also missing his to leave the sides still inseparable. Then after Gervinho failed in his attempt it was left to Sunzu to give Zambia a historic first title, and consign Ivory Coast to another wretched defeat.
