SAD DAY FOR ASSEMBLY

Today, the government introduced two crucial Bills but the opposition, in total disarray, failed to take note of it. Each party following its own agenda caused great loss of time and money. N SHIVA KUMAR

Police presence outside the Assembly was stepped up for the second day of the monsoon session.

TDP party workers, led by their chief Chandrababu Naidu, protest the Bayyaram iron ore mining issue.

INKESHAF AHMED ahmed.m@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Assembly seems set to make a record of sorts in the utter lack of co-ordination among the opposition parties even on searing public issues. The House has not witnessed a single day in the past one year in which the Opposition closed ranks and moved a motion on a pressing public issue. As the House met for the second day today of its monsoon session, the same situation emerged where each party from the main opposition — from the TDP to the BJP — was found toeing its own path. What is widely seen as a major failure of the TDP, all parties pursued their own agenda, giving the Speaker the pleasure of summarily rejecting them all. In the process, precious time of the House was wasted. The TDP wanted an adjournment motion on the steel factory in Bayyaram of Khammam district, which is being opposed by the TRS. The YSR Congress moved an adjournment motion on the reservations in gram panchayat elections. The TRS and CPI pushed the Telangana bill — to resolve creation of a separate state. The CPM, the counterpart of the CPI, had another agenda, the conditions of anganwadi workers. The BJP took up T-issue and the MIM wanted the House

to discuss electricity issue. Following rejection of all motions, parties rushed to the podium shouting slogans denouncing the government. The chair first adjourned the House for 30 minutes and as the situation remained the same, he announced the second adjournment. The House was in disarray and could not meet till 11.30am (at the time of going to press). The House’s business achievement, thus, proved zero today. AROUND THE

Standing Committee submits report Amidst the din created by the rival parties, the State government also introduced two Bills pertaining to municipal administration and medical and health department. On the other hand, the chairpersons of 12 standing committees that were formed for the first time to study budgetary allocations of the State government submitted their reports to the House. The standing committees made scores of recommendations to the State government in spending funds on various development programmes. Earlier in the day, the main opposition TDP led by its party president N Chandrababu Naidu held a dharna at Gun Park protesting the Bayyaram iron ore mining issue.

TDP MLAs busy with surveys Meanwhile, the TDP MLAs were busy transmitting bogus survey reports claiming that one agency, the hitherto unknown “People’s Edge”, gave the TDP 117 seats in the next Assembly elections. It said the YSRC and TRS would together win less than 50 seats. Other opposition parties called the bluff, asking the TDP members to show the survey details. “CBN is daydreaming, wake him up,” said a Congress MLA. TDP chief and his supporters are escorted by security personnel at Gun Park.

The cancerous slip

L

ast year we had reported that carcinogens on paper products, like ATM slips, might cause health problems for citizens. Like with most carcinogens, the bisphenol-A present on the ATM slips can’t be held solely responsible, but doctors say that there might be an increased risk of cancer. Besides this, the amount of paper wasted is also an issue.

Md NIZAMUDDIN nizamuddin.a@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: “I was a teenager when India got Independence. If this was how Independent India was going to be, we should not have sought freedom,” sighs B Bapu Rao, a senior citizen, who has been running from pillar to post for at least 10 years. His was one of the cases which came up at the weekly Prajavani programme. Rao is demanding demarcation of his plot adjacent to the land marked as a playground in HUDA layout (1995) of Nallagandla, Serilingampally. Close enough to the zonal commissioner’s office (West),

the idea of a playground never took off on the four-acre plot. Now owned by the GHMC, it was used as a garbage dump for years. The activity was so organised that it blurred the demarcation of neighbouring private property, including Bapu Rao’s. “Heaps of garbage used to be dumped in the area as an alternative to Jawahar Nagar before construction activity around the area prompted GHMC to seek other alternatives. My plot was also made to suffer in the process. Now I cannot dig a borewell, as the entire groundwater is contaminated with years of released leachate. Nothing can be done about it now but all I am

demanding is replacing of boundary stones that were removed by the bulldozers,” he laments. According to Bapu Rao, only lip service is provided by the mayor, commissioner and other officials during the last few years, but on ground nothing has been done. “What if the entire area is encroached by land sharks, as land values in Gachibowli have touched the sky,” he wonders. But what aggravates his angst is the reply from additional commissioner (planning) K Dhananjaya Reddy, who said that the playground belongs to GHMC, and it was none of his business to speak about it. “You speak about your property problem. The playground belongs to us, we shall take care of it,” the official said curtly. According to him, it is a violation of AP Survey and Boundaries Act, 1923. Now Bapu Rao has only one option — to knock on the doors of the court. But will his health support this is another question that makes him ponder. Special commissioner Navin Mittal was in charge of the Prajavani. As most of the cases were related to the town planning wing, the additional commissioner (planning) responded to most of the grievances. In all, this week’s Prajavani received 31 representations, apart from a few whose complaints were registered in previous weeks.

Kiwis urged to save rarest dolphin The Maui's dolphin is listed as critically endangered, with only 55 adults remaining. NEIL SANDS Agence France-Presse WELLINGTON: New Zealand is facing pressure to save the world's rarest dolphin at an international scientific meeting underway this week in what conservationists say is a test of the nation's "clean, green" credentials. The Maui's dolphin, found only in shallow waters off the North Island's west coast, is listed as critically endangered, with just 55 adults remaining and experts fearing it will disappear by 2030 unless urgent action is taken. The grey and white Maui's, named after a Polynesian demigod, is one of the world's smallest dolphins, with a maximum length of 1.7 metres (5.5 foot). AROUND THE

WORLD

Associate professor of zoology at Otago University Liz Slooten said an expert panel appointed by the government estimated last year that five of the dolphins were killed annually as fishing industry "bycatch". "They are literally teetering in the brink of extinction," Slooten said. "They won't last if we don't do something right now." The New Zealand government believes that entanglement in gill nets — vertical mesh nets left in the water for long periods — is the main cause of death. Conservation groups say proposals for seabed mining, including seismic surveying, also pose a major threat. Some restrictions on gill netting and trawling in the dolphins' habitat were introduced last year but the government stopped short of meeting an International Whaling Commission (IWC) call for an immediate ban to save the species.

Shenzhou: Symbol of rising power BEIJING: China was to launch its longest-ever space mission on Tuesday, with its second woman astronaut among the crew, as it steps up its ambitious space programme, a symbol of the country's growing power. The Shenzhou-10, meaning "Divine Vessel", was due to lift off at 0938 GMT from the Jiuquan launch centre in the Gobi desert. The three astronauts on board, including Wang Yaqing, 33, are scheduled to spend 15 days in space, programme spokeswoman Wu Ping said. Beijing sees the multibillion-dollar space programme as a marker of its rising global stature and mounting technical expertise, as well as the ruling Communist Party's success in turning around the fortunes of the once poverty-stricken nation. It is heavily promoted to the domestic audience. The Sri Lankan government needs to take serious measures to end enforced disappearances, provide information to families on the fate or whereabouts of their relatives, and prosecute all those responsible, Human Rights Watch said.

The UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances has recorded 5,671 reported cases of disappearances in Sri Lanka during its 26-year-long civil war, a figure that does not include those unaccounted for during the end stages of the war in 2008-09 or people “disappeared” since then. WHEN PASSION BECOMES PROFESSION

A tale of revival

Designing was an avocation for Vinay: now it’s a passion. ‘I get my satisfaction from this.’ KANCHAN AGARWAL Kanchan.a@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: It had been a busy weekend for Vinay Narkar, the lawyer-turned-designer who presented handwoven sarees he designed at a three-day exhibition at Our Sacred Space, Secunderabad. The name of the exhibition was Reviving Rare and Ancient Weaves in Contemporary Sarees, for that is exactly what he intends to do: revive a dying art. The exhibits have been woven by weavers from Chanderi, Gadwal and Sholapur under his guidance. Vinay says the career transition from that of a lawyer to a desionger’s was natural. “I was always very fond of textiles,” he recalls. “During our travels, my wife would purchase a variety of handloom sarees, but there was always something missing. Coincidentally, we came across

weavers who were ready to make custom-made sarees for us. I designed a saree for my wife. Our friends liked it. Then I realised I had some acumen for design.” Going a step further, Vinay began working with

weavers in his hometown Sholapur. These weavers are migrants from Andhra Pradesh. Language, of course, was and still is a barrier, as Vinay speaks Marathi and can hardly understand Telugu. But they have managed. The other barrier was the mindset. “They have been weaving for ages and have been weaving the same patterns. No matter how much money is offered, they are hesitant about trying new patterns,” he explains. However, the younger generation have been open to his ideas and the result has been just right. Vinay’s colours attract and please instantly. “Good colours on good fabric, and then the motif is how I prioritise. This is essential to make an impression with your clothes,” he says. About his idea of contemporary clothing, Vinay explains, “Today’s woman can express through her attire.

‘Lead’ing the way in the war on cancer This new weapon against these aggressive cancers is a variety of lead: the isotope Pb 212. JEAN LOUIS SANTINI Agence France-Presse BETHESDA: Atomic medicine has “fantastic potential” for fighting deadly, difficult to treat cancers, the head of French nuclear giant Areva’s medical arm told AFP in an interview. “We are interested in tumors against which the current therapeutic arsenal is very limited — like ovarian, gastric and AROUND THE

Convinced of the great medical potential of this isotope, Areva created its medical affiliate in 2009 in the United States, which, since then, hasn’t stopped growing. “The trials are advancing in a satisfactory way,” Bourdet said, adding that he couldn’t be more optimistic at this point.

pancreatic cancers — where the needs are huge and patients are waiting,” explained Areva Med chief Patrick Bourdet. Based in a Maryland suburb of the US capital, not far from the National Institutes of Health, Areva Med is pitting its hopes on a rare radioactive isotope that may be capable of selectively annihilatingcancer cells. This new weapon against these aggressive cancers is a variety of lead: the isotope Pb 212. It is extremely rare, extracted from an equally rare metal called thorium. Only the few major nuclear powers have stocks of the radioactive metal — France, being one of them, with a considerable cache, Bourdet told AFP. France’s stock can be traced back half a decade to its nuclear subsidiary. At that time, the Commissary of Atomic Energy, or CEA, a governmentfunded research group, decided to hold on to thorium after it extracted uranium — which has become the principal material used in nuclear power plants. In 2003, researchers had the idea of extracting the isotope Pb 212 from the thorium, with Areva’s scientists among them, looking in part for possible applications against cancer.

With the middlemen cut, life is much better for the weavers

working with Vinay. “What they get as labour cost has almost doubled than before,” Vinay says. Not only this, they are also exposed to new thread and colour combinations. But Vinay is modest about all this. “I have so much to learn from them. They know a lot more than I do — they have been doing it for years.” Designing was an avocation for Vinay: now it’s a passion. “I get my satisfaction from this.”

Beatriz had requested an abortion, strictly forbidden in the Central American country, because she suffers from lupus, a disease that weakens the immune system.

Beatriz, 22, is recovering from the surgical procedure at a maternity hospital. The archbishop said the Supreme Court’s decision to reject the woman’s request for an abortion was successful because it “protected the life of the child in the womb." MONEY PROBLEMS

SRINIVAS SETTY FOR REPRESENTATIVE PURPOSE ONLY

Though writing on the watermark window of currency notes is a punishable offence, people use them for everything — from confessing their love to giving out their mobile numbers.

LOSING ITS VALUE

ALEENA ALICE aleena.t@postnoon.com

“R

ohan* weds Sneha*”, “Call me on 9 4 9 0 …. . 8 8 ” , “Ramesh* loves Snigda*” — creepy as it may look, these are some writings commonly seen on currency notes. Despite the Clean Note Policy of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Banking Regulation Act restricting people from any sort of writing on the watermark window of currency notes, many continue to write and disfigure the currency notes because of lack of awareness. Under the RBI guidelines, any sort of writing or inscription on the watermark window of currency notes is a punishable offence under Section 35 A of the Banking Regulation Act 1949; something common citizens seem unaware of. Though in 2001, the RBI had issued clear instructions to all banks regarding the clean note policy, bank staff themselves fail to adhere to the rules. When the common citizen goes to the bank to deposit cash, most of the time, the cashiers write the total number of notes on the watermark window of the currency notes. Surprisingly, not many officials are aware of the RBI policy. Those who are justify their writing by saying they are left with no option. “To keep a track on the number of notes, the cashier writes the number of notes since there is no other provision. We cannot help it because writing it separately on another paper or book

might cause confusion, especially during peak working hours,” said the sub-manager of a nationalised bank. If this was the story of bank officials, who restrict themselves to writing numbers on notes, the general public uses currency notes for everything — from confessing their love to giving out mobile numbers. Currency notes with political symbols is another common sight these days, say bank officials. When Postnoon contacted officials of the State Bank of Hyderabad regarding the kind of action that should be initiated regarding such acts, bank officials said that the police would know what kind of action should be initiated against such acts. AROUND THE

CITY

City police, however, say that so far, no such case has been reported to them. “We live in a system where everything goes on and matters like this are easily ignored. When it comes to fake notes we can take action, but for soiled notes there is nothing much we can do. The RBI should send out circulars about the clean note policy and every bank should have it displayed,” said additional commissioner of police Anjani Kumar.

LACK OF AWARENESS Indian currency is a very important government document. However, many people ignore this fact. If some write on notes,

others fold them to such an extent that the notes tear by the time they reach the bank. “Twice a year, the RBI conducts inspections on the currency notes. Lakhs of currency notes, mostly the denomination of 10s and 50s, are soiled and damaged to such an extent that those notes have to be discarded. This is such a loss to the government. The government should bring about more awareness among citizens, by advertising about the clean note policy to bring a change in the attitude and minds of people,” says T Sudhakar, sub-manager of Corporation Bank (Jubilee Hills branch). Stating that the practice of writing on notes and soiling them has come under criticism from various quarters, chief general manager of RBI, BP Vijayendra says, “In the recent past, instances of certain branches of banks following old practices like writing number of notes in loose packets on watermark window of notes, disfiguring the watermark impression, stapling, and rendering it difficult for easy recognition have come to our notice. Such practices are against the Clean Note Policy of Reserve Bank of India. In this connection, we have issued notices to all the banks to do away with stapling on note packets. Banks should forthwith stop writing on any kind on watermark window of bank notes and issue only clean notes. Further, the public also should respect the national currency and stop writing on the watermark window of the currency notes.”

Waiting for plastic

Fake note menace

aking a leaf from countries like Australia and Singapore which have plastic note currency, the Reserve Bank of India recently stated that the central bank will very soon bring in plastic currency notes on pilot project basic. Stressing the importance of the long shelf life of the notes and also that plastic notes cannot easily be soiled, the RBI has taken this initiative. “As a part of this initiative, one billion `10 plastic notes will be released initially in certain states. “If these notes are successful, more notes will be released in all the states of the country. We are eagerly waiting for these notes to reach us,” says Kiran Kumar, an employee of a nationalised bank.

ith the fake currency scam increasing every day, various service providers who had bitter experiences in the past of dealing with fake currency have been requesting their customers to write their contact details on the currency notes. “Recently when I had gone to pay my internet bill at the customer care centre, the executive had asked me to write my contact number on the `500 currency note. When I asked why, she had told me that it was their policy for customers paying in denominations of `500 or `1,000. Though I tried to reason with the executive that she could take my details separately along with the serial number of the notes, the executive failed to listen to my request,” says Satish Basvaraj, a private firm employee.

US plans action against Snowden Senior lawmakers branded Snowden’s actions as ‘treason’, saying he should be extradited from Hong Kong as quickly as possible. Assange: He’s a hero

DAVE CLARK Agence France-Presse

SYDNEY: WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange Tuesday called whistleblower Edward Snowden "a hero". Assange, who has been holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy in London for nearly a year after claiming asylum, urged nations around the world to offer a similar safe haven to the 29-year-old.

WASHINGTON: The whereabouts of whistleblower Edward Snowden were shrouded in mystery Monday as US lawmakers demanded his immediate extradition from Hong Kong over his sensational leaking of an Internet surveillance program. Snowden, a 29-year-old technology expert working for a private firm subcontracted to the US National Security Agency, checked out of his Hong Kong hotel after revealing his identity to the British-based Guardian newspaper on Sunday. The private contractor has become an instant hero for transparency advocates and libertarians around the globe following his exposure of the NSA's worldwide monitoring of private users web traffic and phone records. But the US government appeared to be gearing up to take action against Snowden on Monday with senior lawmakers branding his actions as "treason" and saying he should be extradited from Hong Kong as quickly as possible. Snowden tried to join US special forces

Senator Dianne Feinstein -- chair of the Senate Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence -declined to go into specifics but said US authorities were vigorously pursuing Snowden. "All the departments are proceeding, I think, aggressively," Feinstein told US media. Hong Kong, a special administrative region of China, has had an extradition agreement with the United States for more than a decade. "The extradition agreement with Hong Kong was

signed in 1996 and entered into force in 1998. It is still in force, and we've actively used it over the years," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said. Lawmakers from across the political spectrum lined up to demand Snowden's speedy return to America as a Washington Post poll indicated that public opinion placed a higher importance on investigating possible terrorist threats rather than protecting an individual's personal privacy.

WASHINGTON: The young contractor behind leaks exposing America's surveillance programs tried but failed to join the US Army's elite special forces in 2004, officials said Monday. Edward Snowden, 29, has revealed himself as the source for sensational revelations in The Guardian and The Washington Post on how US spy agencies trawl through phone records and Internet traffic looking for possible terror threats. The government contractor served as a private first class in the US Army at Fort Benning, Georgia, said Colonel David Patterson, an Army spokesman at the Pentagon.

Indians. Established in the 18th century by Arab Siddi diaspora, the Siddi community served as calvary guards of Asif Jahi Nizam's irregular army. Ahmed, a Siddi, says, “Our fathers came here 60 years ago to serve as soldiers to Nizam. About 300 people had come to Hyderabad from Yemen, out of which 200 stayed while 100 left.” They take pride in their famous foot tapping ‘marfa’ band. Says Ahmed, “Marfa is an intimate part of

our life and culture. No celebration is complete without Marfa.” However, the culture is dying. Ahmed adds, “People are slowly drifting towards private jobs but a few, in order to save their culture, have come up with private bands.” While most of the migrants are Muslim, a small proportion of them converted to Christianity. Very few chose Hinduism because of the caste hierarchy. The Siddis of Hyderabad have traditionally resided in AC Guards area, known locally as Siddi Risala. The area was earlier known as Nizam Bodyguard area and was later named as African Calvary Guards. The Siddis have adopted both cultures equally. Says Aisha Bibi, “We follow Islam strictly and celebrate all the Islamic festivals.” In acknowledgement of their ancestors’ achievements and bravery, they celebrate faitha, a day when they distribute food and other items to the needy. Their dark complexion, broad nose and curly hair are slowly giving way to typical Indian features as youngsters marry outside the community. “I was married to a Sikh. We do not believe in con-

straints.” Though rich in culture, many of the Siddis are living in sheer poverty. Goisya Sultana, also known as Mamma, is a famous figure in the basti. “You can see the condition we are living in,” says Sultana as she points at the tattered houses. “About 17 years ago, a man called MA Khadir demolished the buildings. Inspite of having proper papers, we couldn’t do anything as we were uneducated. Had it not been for advocate Bari MA, we would have been shelterless.” Sultana also blames P Janardhan Reddy for their condition. However, she has good things to say about Asaduddin Owasi and PV Narasimha Rao. “They are the only people who helped us.” Due to the change in their features, they no longer stand out. “People are in a dilemma sometimes,” laughs Abdul Aziz Bin Almas. “We are not looked upon as strangers anymore,” adds Ahmed. The community is also undergoing other changes. They now educate their children, including girls. Says Sultana, “I have six daughters. My elder daughter is a nurse while the others are still studying.”

EXTREME PETS

Chilean farm exports Tarantulas As pets go, they are low maintenance. So, how about snuggling up with a giant, non-biting tarantula?

BATUCO: A farm in Chile exports the palm-sized critters to Asia, Europe and the United States for sale as exotic household companions. They go for $25 each plus shipping, and need to be fed just once a week, preferably live cockroaches or worms. And they live a long time -- up to 25 years in the case of females. "Not everyone can keep a dog or cat. Tarantulas are cheaper and do not need as much attention. What's more, the world has changed and what with technolo-

gy and cable television, people are learning about this kind of exotic animal and want one for their home," said Juan Gonzalez, a vet at the farm. It is owned by one Juan Pablo Orellana, an agronomist who gathers and raises these Chilean rose hair tarantula (Grammostola rosea). Orellana's farm exports about 30,000 of them a year. They travel in boxes with holes in them and a certificate that could be seen as a pedigree. He also gathers arachnids in hills outside Santiago, and also raises and breeds species that are hardest to find. In Chile only 11 species of tarantulas have been formally classified scientifically, but he himself possesses 20 different kinds. His farm boasts a rainbow of tarantulas: some have red abdomens, others have coppercolored skin, and they have varying degrees of hairiness. After filling his house with pet spiders, Orellana founded his company, called Andespiders, employing several family members, mostly women. "It is labor intensive and very specialized, and I prefer women because the creatures are fragile, and if mishandled, they can die," Orellana says. The breeding process is rather involved and requires a delicate

touch. It takes two and a half to three years to raise one up to saleable size. Gonzalez, an adviser to Orellana, said the tarantulas must be separated from each other to avoid cannibalism. The US is the farm's main client, while European buyers seek fewer tarantulas but a wider variety of species, Gonzalez added. In recent months the farm has also delivered critters to the University of Antofagasta in northern Chile, which is researching the cancer-fighting features of Chilean spider and scorpion venom. FRACKING

Fight to save rural Romania Clad in black cassock, Father Laiu has joined thousands of locals in protests against a project he says ‘threatens man, nature and future generations’. ISABELLE WESSELINGH Agence France-Presse BARLAD: As Orthodox priest Vasile Laiu gazes over the picturesque hills of eastern Romania, he prays they will be spared the shale gas wells and drilling rigs dotting some US landscapes. For months the 50-year-old cleric has been one of the most outspoken opponents to plans by US energy giant Chevron to drill for shale gas in this rural and impoverished region. Like many, he opposes the controversial drilling technique known as hydraulic fracturing or AROUND THE

WORLD

"fracking". It involves injecting huge amounts of water, mixed with sand and chemicals, at high pressures to break up rock formations and release the gas. Widely used in some US states such as Pennsylvania and Colorado, it has been banned in Vermont as well as in France and Bulgaria because of potential air and water pollution. When the mayor of Barlad banned a rally against fracking last April, Laiu welcomed the protesters in his church. "The Church does not interfere in politics but if the health or life of only one of my fellow men is put in

danger, it is my duty as a priest to intervene," he said. Since 2011, when Chevron obtained a 1.5 million-acre concession to look for shale gas, the region has been caught in a new battle. Its promoters say shale gas extraction can create jobs, slash energy prices and provide a boost for the Barlad economy plagued by 10 percent unemployment, the highest rate in Romania. Others dismiss the shale frenzy as a temporary fad that could cause lasting damage to the environment and public health. Thanks to the globalised world, the Oscar-nominated documentary Gasland and testimonies from American families about health problems they believe are linked to shale gas drilling have reached this far-flung corner of Romania. A 2012 study by Duke University showed that drinking water wells are at risk of contamination from fracking. Father Laiu's main fears are over water. The area suffers from droughts, and fracking needs enormous amounts of water per well — up to 20,000 cubic metres — according to industry figures.

CHILD, 4, DIES OF TUMOUR

The disposal of wastewater laced with corrosive salts, carcinogens and natural radioactive elements is another worry in an area where villagers grow their own fruit and vegetables and raise livestock.

Vasile Laiu, the Christian Orthodox archpriest of Barlad, takes part in a protest against shale gas exploitation next to a placard reading in Romanian "Romania without fracking, Romania say STOP" in Barlad city. Chevron spokeswoman Sally Jones stressed that it "operates at the highest standards in terms of safety and environmental protection". But Father Laiu says the villagers are being ignored. "Parishioners found prospecting equipment sinking pipes into fields without prior notice. Then they saw the walls crack on their

buildings,” he said. But Laiu remains determined to make the voice of the locals heard. "Years ago, my four-yearold daughter died from a tumour. When I asked the doctor why, he answered: 'Only God knows, father. But we are too close to Chernobyl and that could be the cause'". AFP

"For 50 years, really only around a dozen staple ingredients were available," Amaro told AFP, referring to the chronic shortages under communism, when even toilet paper and bread were scarce. "So we learnt to cook very simple dishes like pierogi and breaded pork chops, which ironically are not part of traditional Polish cuisine.” "After the fall of communism, Poles quickly grew richer and adopted a Western lifestyle, fast food included, and it's only recently that they've begun to respect local products." FRANKFURT: German engineering giant Siemens plans to cut 1,000 more domestic jobs at its energy division over the next few years, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported in its Tuesday edition. The company plans to initially cut 340 jobs in its energy-solutions unit in Erlangen and Offenbach, the daily newspaper said. Siemens then plans to scrap another 650 jobs at those sites while it creates new ones in South Korea, strengthening its position in Asia. The Munich-based company was not immediately available for comment. Siemens has said its target was to cut six billion euros in costs by 2014.

SAN FRANCISCO: Apple on Monday unveiled its hotly anticipated iTunes Radio Service as it announced a dramatic overhaul of the touchscreen interface for its popular smartphones and tablets. The free Internet radio ser-

vice features over 200 stations “and an incredible catalog of music from the iTunes Store,” Apple said in a statement as it opened its annual developers conference in San Francisco. The ad-supported free music service is set to launch later this

year and “offers music fans access to thousands of new songs every week, as well as serving up exclusive music from new and popular artists before you hear them anywhere else,” Apple said. The service will be integrated with Apple’s personal voiceassistant software program Siri, so users will be able to find out “who plays that song?” or ask the programme to “play more like this”. “iTunes Radio is an incredible way to listen to personalised radio stations which have been created just for you,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet software and services. Changes included transparency and motion-responsiveness that allows users to tilt an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to “peek” below icons on screens to see rich images beneath. MEXICO’S TELECOM LAW MEXICO CITY: Mexico’s new telecommunications law took effect on Monday, capping President Enrique Pena Nieto’s bid to end monopolies in an industry worth more than $32 billion a year. The legislation aims at increasing foreign investment, allowing non-Mexican companies to own 100 per cent of the capital of a telephone firm — compared to 49 per cent today — and 49 percent of radio and television broadcasters — compared to zero now. Currently billionaire Carlos Slim’s fixed-line phone company, Telmex, controls 80 per cent of the industry while his cellphone service, Telcel, holds 70 per cent of the mobile market. The legislation also aims to break the dominance of the country’s two powerful television broadcasters, Televisa and TV Azteca. Televisa holds 70 percent of broadcast television and 60 percent of the cable market. Two new autonomous regulators will also be created under the reform. A telecoms regulator, Ifetel, will have the power to approve or revoke concessions.

Comment They who dream by day are cognisant of many things which escape those who dream only by night. Edgar Allan Poe American author

Obama and Xi play nice, but future unclear SHAUN TANDON Agence France-Presse

T

he leaders of the United States and China appear to have started off on friendly terms during a weekend together in the California sun, but it remains to be seen if good vibes can bridge deep gaps. At the aptly named Sunnylands retreat, President Barack Obama gave his counterpart Xi Jinping a redwood bench as a gift, and the leaders of the rising and established powers took a 50-minute stroll with only their interpreters. The two sides had billed the casual summit as a way to set a positive tone after Xi became president in March. Xi will probably be in charge over a decade in which China eclipses the United States as the world's largest economy. While the two governments had an obvious interest in describing the summit as a success, experts said that the talks at least went smoothly -- not an insignificant feat considering the number of disputes. "Did they emerge as the best of chums? That's hard to tell -- my guess is probably not. But they understand each other and I think that's important," said Chris Johnson, a former CIA analyst on China who is now at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. "Both sides seemed to suggest that they can work with the other guy, and I think that's very substantial," he said. In one signal of cooperation, the two countries said that they would work together to phase out hydrofluorocarbons, the mega contributors to climate change found mostly in made-in-China refrigerators and air conditioners.

Child execution puts rebel justice in spotlight THE INSIDE STORY Serene Assir

P

hotographs of the bloodied face of a 14year-old boy executed in front of his parents by jihadist rebels in northern Syria have thrown into stark relief the sometimes extreme justice meted out in rebel-held areas. Fighters of Al-Qaeda front group the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria accused Mohammad Qattaa of blasphemy but a human rights group said he had done nothing more than use a common Arabic phrase that makes reference to the Prophet Mohammed's name. Pictures of Qattaa's face, bloodied by the three shots that cut short his life on Sunday, spread like wildfire on social media websites, prompting a strong condemnation of his killing from the mainstream opposition. "If someone shot a dog in the street, people would act," cried the boy's grieving mother Umm Mohammed in amateur video footage distributed by activists. "Where are his rights? He was a child! How could they kill him? "They killed him right in front of my eyes... May God take

revenge on them... I saw his blood streaming down," she wailed. "We are with neither side (in Syria's raging conflict). We just look after ourselves... Why did you kill my son? Is he a terrorist?" The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the militants responsible for the boy's execution were foreign volunteers with the Al-Qaeda-linked Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. "A member of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria spoken to by an Observatory activist said the boy deserved to die," said Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman. "Those who executed the boy were not Syrian," he added. Large swathes of northern Syria have fallen into the hands of various rebel groups, some of them Islamist, which have set up their own justice systems in areas they control. Qattaa's killing was the latest in a series of abuses by rebel fighters that have discomfited the mainstream opposition and its Western backers. Just last month, amateur video showed a rebel fighter in the devastated province of Homs eating the organs of a slain soldier. Opposition National Coalition member Alia Mansour said: "This execution is a crime against humanity and a crime

against Syria's revolution." "As the conflict develops, it is logical that we will see more problems of criminality emerge," said Aron Lund, who has written extensively on the Syrian insurgency. "The core problem in Syria, aside from the war, is the lack of law and order. Religious extremism is a response to the lack of law and order, as radicals see a chance to step in like a sheriff in the Wild West," Lund told AFP. "On the regime side, power is concentrated in Assad's hands. But on the rebel side, it is more complicated because many insurgent groups are competing against each other for territory, and have many different ideas about how Syria should be ruled," he added.

Nadim Houry of Human Rights Watch said it was imperative that the opposition go beyond mere condemnation, as allegations of abuses by rebel fighters were multiplying. "Executions are on the increase, and a rising number of groups are taking the law into their own hands," Houry told AFP. "The rule of the gun is what dominates in Syria now, whether in opposition or regime-held areas. What is essential is that there be space for Syrian non-combatants to be able to speak up and condemn such acts," he said. "This kind of ability to mobilise and put pressure on the guys with the guns is essential for Syria's future."

hatever one says, the Congress has always proved itself lucky. When the party in rule for nine years at a stretch is bathed in corruption of gigantic scale, it was provided with a sharp weapon by none other than its main rival, the BJP. The corruption, challenging judiciary, vetting CBI report on PM... the omissions and commissions of the party crossed all boundaries of rule of law. And when it was struggling to find a way out to face the electorate in less than a year, out came the very party ‘with a difference,’ giving a grand comic opera exposing itself to the whole world how ‘different’ it was. The party with a difference indeed proved a party with difference. The BJP has got a bigger list of leaders wanting to be prime

minister than the Congress must understand that there is a law of levity where things and issues are to be prioritised before tackling them. The pertinent question is if anybody, be it a tall or small leader, is indispensable or has a birthright to claim positions in the party. In more plain language, should not octogenarians give a chance to the younger elements to prove themselves? Coronation is okay for the Congress as it is still in the vice grip of the Nehru family, but a right wing party like the BJP does not have the luxury. The best option is to move forward —whether be for the best or for the worst. Wasting time on those who do not age gracefully is not worth the candle.

CLOTHES MAKE A PERSON

What are you wearing to work? Some 15 years ago, the only people who went to work dressed in shorts and a pair of chappals were maybe film directors and rock band musicians. But now, if you work at a multinational company or a start-up, dress codes are visibly less rigid. KANCHAN AGARWAL kanchan.a@postnoon.com

Y

ou can go to office in round necked t-shirts, shorts, casual dresses, floral dresses, palazzo pants and chappals, no one will say a thing whether you are male or female. If you have not shaved for a week, it is okay as long as you are doing your work right. “The look that we sport to office is just how the atmosphere there is — casual. We wear jeans, or shorts, even. No one cares if you are clean shaven or not. If you have not cut your nails, no one will ask you because it is a matter of personal hygiene. You can even cut them at office. We have a homely atmosphere,” says Arjun Nair, who works at Facebook. However, what you can wear varies depending on the nature of your work. If your work requires you to meet clients and bring business to the company, there is some decorum that should be followed for practical reasons. “If a client comes shabbily dressed to office, it puts me off. It reflects poorly on him. It makes one look unprofessional, incapable and someone who will slack at work,” says Nakul Verma*, who works at a reputed social media company. If you are not well groomed, whether it is about the

length and style of your hair or if there is a visible stubble or not, there is no waiting for direct remarks. Those who have been in business for long enough can say it can affect your deals. “It leaves a bad impression and eventually, deals don’t strike. Some offices allow for casual grooming but marketing teams always have to stay sharp,” explains Nakul. While men can do just fine by maintaining personal hygiene, women have to be a bit careful in how casual they are. Tiny matters of leaking mascara, dry lips, undone nails can tell much in the negative about a woman. “I don’t wear anything more than lip balm and kajal but if there is an event coming up, I make sure to visit a beauty salon,” says Kavita Kataria, a senior PR executive. You can be dressed casually, or semi-formally but ensuring a neat look takes you a long way. “It builds your credibility. You are representing your company. If you look good, your company looks good. It builds brand image for both of you. Being casually dressed has at times been taken as immense confidence. I have also not been taken seriously only because of leaking mascara,” says Neelam Sharma*, an event manager. (Names have been changed on request.)

hen I tell people I’m a tour manager, everyone always goes, “Oh that’s so cool! You get paid to travel! I wish I could have your job!” Trust me, you don’t. If you think the job is like a permanent vacation, then your idea of a vacation probably includes waking up at 4am every day, dealing with angry clients, trying to fulfill the strangest of requests and finishing tonnes of paperwork. It’s not like I get to pick what I want to do. I have to make sure my group of 40-50 people is happy. I have to ensure they stick to the schedule drawn up by my travel agency. They don’t understand why I won’t allow them to shop for an hour more, or spend more time at lunch. The problem

with a pre-planned tour is that there is always somewhere to be, and I have to ensure we get there. I’ve been yelled at and insulted by my clients. I’ve had to apologise to the hotel staff for the way my clients sometimes behave. Quite often, my clients act as if I am their servant, and expect me to pick up after them. The hours are irregular and there isn’t any sort of support system — you can’t expect a colleague to cover for you if you’re not feeling up to it. You are, quite literally, alone in a foreign country, trying to handle a bunch of unruly adults who don’t want to listen to you. It’s not all bad, though. In my two short years in this line, I’ve gained tremendous confidence in my own abilities. Even if they complained during the whole tour, most of my clients hug me and tell me they had a wonderful time at the end of it all. It’s not an easy job by any means, but I’ll take it over a desk job any day.

CRAZY HEART

19

Apart from the common, yet dangerous, coronary and hypertensive heart disease, the human pump can suffer a myriad other ailments. Here are a few. Cardiac dysrhythmia What is it: It is any of a large and heterogeneous group of conditions in which there is abnormal electrical activity in the heart. The heartbeat may be too fast or too slow, and may be regular or irregular. A heart beat that is too fast is called tachycardia and a heart beat that is too slow is called bradycardia. Although many arrhythmias are not lifethreatening, some can cause cardiac arrest. Symptoms: The most common symptom of arrhythmia is an abnormal awareness of heartbeat, called palpitations. These may be infrequent, frequent, or continuous. Some of these arrhythmias are harmless (though distracting for patients) but many of them predispose to adverse outcomes. Diagnosis: Cardiac dysrhythmias are often first detected by simple but nonspecific means: auscultation of the heartbeat with a stethoscope, or feeling for peripheral pulses. Treatment: The method of cardiac rhythm management depends firstly on whether or not the affected person is stable or unstable. Treatments may include physical manoeuvres, medications, electricity conversion, or electro or cryo cautery.

Heart of the matter Myocarditis

Cardiomyopathy

What is it: Myocarditis or inflammatory cardiomyopathy is inflammation of heart muscle (myocardium) sometimes caused by a pathogen.

What is it: This literally means ‘heart muscle disease’ and is the measurable deterioration of the function of the myocardium (the heart muscle) for any reason, usually leading to heart failure;

Diagnosis: Myocardial inflammation can be suspected on the basis of electrocardiographic (ECG) results, elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) and/or Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and increased IgM (serology) against viruses known to affect the myocardium. Treatment: As most viral infections cannot be treated with directed therapy, symptomatic treatment is the only form of therapy for those forms of myocarditis.

Cor pulmonale What is it: It is the enlargement of the right ventricle of the heart as a response to increased resistance or high blood pressure in the lungs (pulmonary hypertension). Diagnosis: In many cases, the diagnosis of pulmonary heart disease is not easy as both the lung and heart disease can produce similar symptoms. Most patients undergo an ECG, electrocardiogram, chest X ray, echocardiogram, CT scan of the chest and a cardiac catheterisation. Treatment: Elimination of the cause is the most important intervention. Smoking must be stopped, exposure to dust, flames, household smoke and to cold weather is avoided. If there is evidence of respiratory infection, it should be treated with appropriate antibiotics after culture and sensitivity. In COPD, long-term oxygen therapy may improve cor pulmonale.

Symptoms: Dyspnea (breathlessness) and peripheral edema (swelling of the legs). People with cardiomyopathy are often at risk of dangerous forms of irregular heart beat and sudden cardiac death. The most common form of cardiomyopathy is dilated cardiomyopathy. Diagnosis: EKG abnormalities are often present, although the changes are frequently nonspecific. Treatment: Treatment depends on the type of cardiomyopathy and condition of disease, but may include medication or pacemakers. The goal of treatment is often symptom relief, and some patients may eventually require a heart transplant.

Technology ‘SMART’ MOVE

SMALL CHANGES Emphasis on smartphone and smaller screens shakes up website world Social games pioneer Zynga, which rose to stardom making titles played at Facebook’s website, is cutting nearly a fifth of its staff as part of a move to focus on titles for mobile gadgets.

PS4 WINS? The PlayStation 4 will cost $399 and will go on sale “this holiday season”, Sony announced at its E3 press event at Los Angeles. That’s $100 less than the Xbox One, which Microsoft said today would retail for $499, starting in November. Sony announced the PS4 back in February, but didn’t show the console at that time. Now we know what it looks like, and — surprise! It’s a smooth, black, rectangular box with buttons and a disc drive. Just as Microsoft began its earlier presentation by talking about the Xbox 360, Sony began by talking about its existing hardware. However, no hardware refresh was announced for either device.

nternet giants from Google and Facebook to Yahoo and Zynga are scrambling to adapt to an online world where people reach for smartphones or tablets instead of traditional computers. Social games pioneer Zynga, which rose to stardom making titles played at Facebook’s website, is cutting nearly a fifth of its staff as part of a move to focus on titles for mobile gadgets. After taking over as chief executive at Yahoo last year, former Google executive Marissa Mayer laid out a turn-around strategy that made a priority of tailoring offerings to smartphones and tablets. The dismal performance of Facebook’s freshly-launched stock last year was blamed in large part on fears that it lacked tools to cash in on members who are increasingly accessing the social network from mobile devices. Google has proved prescient by creating and giving away an

Android mobile operating system that showcases its software and services on smartphones and tablets. Even the Mountain View, California-based technology titan’s seemingly offbeat “big bets” on Internet-linked Glass eyewear and Web-connected self-driving cars are seen by some analysts as shrewd moves to remain anchored in lifestyles. “The head-mounted display makes the mobile user much more valuable because you can serve ads as they are walking and make them locationbased,” independent Silicon

Valley analyst Rob Enderle said of Glass. “With self-driving cars, the dashboard is a huge tablet; if the car is driving and someone is bored, you can serve up whatever you want.” Companies that staked claims with websites visited by people using desktop or laptop computers risk obsolescence if they don’t adapt to Internet users switching to apps on smartphones or tablets. Industry data shows that people are moving “aggressively” to apps and away from traditional websites, according to Gartner analyst Van Baker. “It is important to cater to that mobile user,” Baker told AFP. “That is the driving force in the market right now; the one device a person carries everywhere — the smartphone.” Not only are the devices

preferred by Internet users changing, so is their behaviour. Gartner research shows that people using smartphones access the Internet an average of 20 times a day with sessions lasting about a minute, compared with four times daily for about 35 minutes a pop on traditional computers. “It is a big challenge, because the behaviour associated with a smartphone is dramatically different from a notebook computer,” Baker said. “Your experience needs to be two clicks deep and be done in a minute,” he continued. “If it takes any longer, they are gone.” Smartphones in particular have small screens, raising the risk of people being annoyed by advertising. Mobile devices also allow location, calendar information and other contextual data to be woven into services to win people over with desirable information at just the right moments and places. “The opportunity to be relevant or helpful is much greater because of the contextual information,” said Forrester analyst Charles Golvin. AFP

Alienware has announced a new lineup of laptops that will replace the ones they have in the market right now. The new models are 60 per cent metal, including a 100per cent aluminium A panel [lid] and a magnesium alloy chassis. The trackpad is now backlit and as always you will be able to change the colours of all LEDs around the device. The price range for the new series ranges from $1,199 to $2,099 and these power horses look as massive as they always did.

No One in Nov Xbox One launch has been a bummer till now. There was a lot riding on Microsoft’s E3 press conference as gamers were hoping against hope that the company will change a few things about the console that got them more negative attention than they had hoped for. However, gamers will be gamers and there will be plenty of people who will line up to buy Xbox One on day one. For those people in India there is some bad news, Xbox One may not be available here during launch. We may not be among the 21 countries that will get the console when it releases in November.

Entertainment A STAR IN THE MAKING

Amy Jackson raises the heat in Yevadu The British model turned actress is going to sizzle in her debut film Yevadu in which she's paired up with Ram Charan.

A

my Jackson is all set to make her debut in Telugu film industry later this year. Although she was seen in couple of dubbed films like 1947 – A Love Story and Shiva Thaandavam, she'll be making her Tollywood debut in Vamshi Paidipally's upcoming film Yevadu. Ram Charan is playing the lead role whereas Shruti Haasan is the lead actress in this action entertainer. Sources say that Amy Jackson bagged an important role in the film only after going through a complete makeover. In 1947 – A Love Story, she played the role of a British diplomat's daughter who falls in love with a washerman in Chennai and in her next Hindi film, Ekk Deewana Tha, she played the role of a Syrian Christian from Kerala. Although she's drop dead gorgeous in most of her photoshoots, so far none of her films have shed light on her glamorous side. Now, all that is about to change and buzz is that Amy Jackson is going to sizzle in Yevadu. Recently, a song was filmed on Ram Charan and Amy Jackson on a beach in Thailand and Amy will be seen in a bikini in this song. Most part of her scenes were earlier shot in Vizag, Hyderabad and Switzerland and it certainly looks like that she'll make a big splash in her debut film in Telugu. So far, 90 per cent of the film has been completed and the audio might be launched in the third week of June. Producer Dil Raju is planning to release Yevadu in the last week of July.

KAKURO

QUICK CROSSWORD

26

SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Jacques Audiard's critically acclaimed French prison drama, Un prophète is going to be remade in Hollywood by Sony Pictures. “The hero in my film is there to illustrate the capacity for resistance of the individual and his ability to make himself his own rules, his own life” ~ Jacques Audiard

Un prophète set for a Hollywood makeover

acques Audiard, one of the most acclaimed filmmakers in contemporary French cinema, has been on the radar of Hollywood studios for quite sometime now. Right from his breakout film See How They Fall (Regarde les hommes tomber) which released in 1994, to his recent work Rust and Bone, his films have won several awards including a BAFTA, Grand Prix at Cannes and being nominated for Academy Awards. Last year, he ruffled quite a few feathers with his heartwarming drama Rust and Bone which revolves around a young man who stands by a beautiful whale trainer who tries to recover after a terrible accident which leaves her handicapped. In 2009, Jacques Audiard’s Un prophète was a smash hit in film festival circuit across the world and it remains his most talked about work. The film revolves around Malik El Djebena (Tahar Rahim), a young French man of Algerian descent, who’s sentenced to prison for attacking police officers. Once he lands in prison, he finds out

that the prison is divided into two factions — the Muslims and the Corsicans. Despite his origins, a Corsican mobster Cesar Luciani (Niels Arestrup) takes Malik under his wing and slowly Malik rises up to become a mafia kingpin. Made on a budget of 13 million Euros, the film grossed more than 20 million Euros and it was also nominated for Best Foreign Film at 82nd Academy Awards and won the

WATCHING

Grand Prix award at Cannes at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, apart from nine Cesars awards including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. In an interview to The Guardian, Jacques Audiard once said, “You don't have to like heroes. The hero in my film is there to illustrate the capacity for resistance of the individual and his ability to make himself his own rules, his

own life.” That pretty much sums up why Malik El Djebena is such a complex character in the film and the critical acclaim for the film propelled Tahar Rahim’s career who went on to do films like Our Children and Asghar Farhadi’s The Past. Four years after the film released in France, Sony Pictures has bought the remake rights of Un prophète and the English remake will be produced by Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe. Incidentally, Neal H. Moritz had earlier backed films like Fast & Furious series, Total Recall and 21 Jump Street. Although Sony Pictures haven’t signed any director to helm the project yet, it could be a great chance for Jacques Audiard to make a crossover to Hollywood, but the question is will he jump into the Hollywood bandwagon. In the past few years, several French filmmakers like Guillaume Canet, Pascal Chaumeil, Olivier Megaton and Pierre Morel have found a footing in Hollywood and the remake of a hugely successful drama like Un prophète would make Jacques Audiard a hot property in the market. More details about the cast of this remake will be announced soon.

Grizzlies dump Hollins Hollins will not be offered a new contract to coach Memphis Grizzlies, the team announced, despite his guiding them to the best playoff run.

MEMPHIS: Lionel Hollins will not be offered a new contract to coach the Memphis Grizzlies, the team announced on Monday, despite his guiding them to the best playoff run in their 18-year history. The Grizzlies reached the Western Conference finals for the first time this season, winning a club-record 56 regular-season games and beating the Los Angeles Clippers and Oklahoma City before losing to the San Antonio Spurs. Hollins, 59, is under contract as the team's coach until June 30 but will not be offered a renewal deal after the Spurs swept Memphis out of the playoffs. "After a thorough internal process, which included conversations with Lionel and his representatives, we decided as an organization to move in a different direction," Grizzlies chief executive and managing partner Jason Levien said. Hollins served as an interim coach of the Grizzlies in the 1999-

2000 season when they were based in Vancouver and coached the last four games in the 2004-05 season after Hubie Brown resigned as

TOUR OF SWITZERLAND

Frank takes yellow as Sagan wins stage

MEIRINGEN: Swiss rider Mathias Frank (in pic) claimed the overall leader's yellow jersey as Slovakian Peter Sagan took stage three honours at the Tour of Switzerland on Monday. The pair were part of a four-man breakaway who moved clear of a larger 12-man group on the final descent into Meiringen after a 203.3km run from Montreux. Sagan proved too strong for his breakaway companions in the sprint for the line, finishing ahead of last year's overall winner Rui Da Costa of Portugal and Czech Roman Kreuziger, with Frank fourth. An elite group formed on the final category one Hasliberg climb as

American Tejay van Garderen pushed the pace for his BMC teammate Frank. That burst decimated the peloton until around a dozen riders were left but the next split happened on the descent when Italy's 2011 Giro d'Italia winner Michele Scarponi crashed into a grass verge, holding up those behind him. Da Costa made an immediate dash to join the three ahead of him, but no-one else could bridge the gap and the stage win came down to the front four. With three of that group eyeing overall victory more than a stage success, Sagan was never in any danger of being challenge and he won the sprint at a canter. AFP

coach. In January of 2009, the Grizzlies hired Hollins as their coach and he went 195-155 over four seasons, reaching the playoffs each of the past three campaigns. "Lionel, the coaching staff, the players and the organization achieved new heights this season with our run to the Western Conference Finals and for that, we are grateful," Levien said. "The entire Grizzlies family wishes Lionel all the best and great success as he moves forward in his career." The Grizzlies are looking at George Karl, this season's NBA Coach of the Year who was fired last week by the Denver Nuggets, according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal newspaper. Hollins is expected to attract interest from several NBA clubs, including Denver, the Clippers and the Brooklyn Nets. AFP

Pistons name Cheeks as coach DETROIT: Maurice Cheeks, a former point guard who helped the Philadelphia 76ers win an NBA title in 1983, was named coach of the NBA's Detroit Pistons on Monday. Cheeks, who spent the past four seasons as an assistant coach for the Oklahoma City Thunder, has previously served as a coach in Philadelphia and Portland. The 56-year-old Cheeks, who signed a multi-year deal with the Pistons, compiled a 284-286 record from 2001-2005 with Portland and 2005-2009 with Philadelphia, but only made the playoffs three times in eight seasons and never made it past the first round. "After spending some time with Maurice, I was very impressed not only with his basketball knowledge, but his communication and leadership skills," Pistons owner Tom Gores said. "We are very excited to have someone of his experience and talent help take this franchise into the future." The Pistons, who fired coach Lawrence Frank after going 29-53 this past season, have missed the playoffs for four seasons in a row and won no more than 30 of 82 games.

South Africa defeat Pakistan Chris Morris took two wickets on his ODI debut and Ryan McLaren a career-best of four for 19 as South Africa returned to winning ways in the Champions Trophy with a 67-run success over Pakistan. JULIAN GUYER Agence France-Presse BIRMINGHAM: Chris Morris took two wickets on his one-day international debut and Ryan McLaren a career-best four for 19 as South Africa returned to winning ways in the Champions Trophy with a 67-run success over Pakistan at Edgbaston on Monday. Pakistan, set 235 to win, finished on 167 all out as South Africa made light of the absence of premier fast bowlers Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel in winning with five overs to spare. Man-of-the-match Hashim Amla made 81 -- after being dropped before he reached double figures -- and that was the cornerstone of South Africa’s 234 for nine, a total the Proteas had no trouble in defending. “Not many teams would have been able to get 234 against that bowling attack like we did,” said South Africa captain AB de Villiers. “A quick word for Chris Morris, who enjoyed a wonderful debut today.” Pakistan captain Misbah-ulHaq, who top-scored for his side with 55, lamented the team’s batting. “We needed four-and-a-half an over but we could not rotate (the strike) in the middle. That score you could have chased down.” McLaren’s return, which

respectively. But defeat left Pakistan’s hopes of a semi-final spot hanging by a thread. The match was always set to hinge on whether Pakistan, bowled out for just 170 by the West Indies, could make a winning score against a South Africa attack missing Steyn, still to feature in this tournament because of a knee injury, and Morkel, whose Champions Trophy ended after he suffered a leg injury

against India. Pakistan’s chase stalled from the outset when Morris, a late call-up to the squad after Morkel was ruled out, produced a newball burst of two wickets for 10 runs in 19 balls. Misbah slams batsmen after loss

BIRMINGHAM: Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq (right) turned on his “totally lost” top order after another poor display with the bat left his side struggling to qualify for the Champions Trophy semi-finals. Pursuing, in Misbah’s words, “a gettable” target of 235 against South Africa, Pakistan collapsed to 167 all out during a 67-run defeat by the Proteas in a day/night clash at Edgbaston on Monday. This followed their slump to 170 all out in an opening two-wicket Group B loss to the West Indies at The Oval last week. to take Pakistan through to the last four. The 39-year-old Misbah made a career-best 96 not out against the West Indies and was again Pakistan’s top-scorer on

Monday with 55. Nasir Jamshed followed up his 50 at The Oval with 42 at Edgbaston but Imran Farhat, Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik again all fell for single figure scores. And bringing in Umar Amin for Asad Shafiq, out for nought against the West Indies, made little difference with the newcomer only managing 16 on Monday. Misbah was jeered by an overwhelmingly pro-Pakistan 25,000 capacity crowd at the post-match presentation ceremony, not that he had any complaints about his reception. “One day it is ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ (long live Pakistan), the next day it is boos,” Misbah

told reporters. “When you produce these sort of performances, they (the fans) have the right to say this. The players need to take responsibility. If you are not delivering as a player, the team will suffer. At the moment, no-one is justifying their place in the team. No-one is getting runs. “You think about selection after the tournament. We thought these were the best six batsmen in Pakistan when we came here. “Again, it is about application and batsmen applying themselves. All the responsibility lies with the players. It’s really difficult when your batting is performing like that. It’s really disappointing.” AFP

30&31 Ramdin banned for 2 matches

LONDON: West Indies’ wicket-keeper Denesh Ramdin was on Monday suspended for two one-day matches and fined 100 percent of his match fee for wrongly claiming a catch in the Champions Trophy. Match referee Chris Broad charged Ramdin with violating the spirit of the game following a hearing in London after the wicket-keeper had pleaded not guilty to the offence. “This is regarded as a serious offence as it is the responsibility of all players to act in the spirit of the game,” Broad said in a statement released by the International Cricket Council (ICC). “I hope Ramdin has learnt his lesson from this incident and that we will not see such behaviour by him or any player in the future,” the former England batsman added. The suspension means Ramdin will miss Tuesday’s match against India at the Oval and the last group game against South Africa in Cardiff on Friday. AFP

Row not a worry: Dhoni LONDON: Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni insisted on Monday his Champions Trophy squad was not distracted by the spot-fixing row back home. Indian cricket was thrown into chaos last month after three players, including recent Test fast bowler Shanthakumaran Sreesanth, were arrested over allegations of spot-fixing during the Indian Premier League (IPL). Two team officials, Gurunath Meiyappan of Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings, and Raj Kundra of the Rajasthan Royals, were also suspended from cricket-related activities for betting on matches. Although the players and officials have denied any wrongdoing, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is busy taking measures to ensure the IPL does not lose further credibility. Dhoni, preparing for Tuesday’s key Champions Trophy match at the Oval in London, said the entire squad were staying away from the ongoing controversy. “We don’t read newspapers, so whatever is happening back home is happening back home,” he said. “We just practise and

play to the best of our abilities. “Those are things in our control and helps to improve our game.” India have looked impressive so far in the tournament, beating South Africa by 26 runs in their first match in Cardiff after posting a commanding 331-7. With the West Indies having defeated Pakistan by two wickets at the Oval, the winner on Tuesday is almost certain to take

one of the two semi-final berths from group B. India, the reigning World Cup champions, have won eight of their last 11 one-dayers against the West Indies over the past three years, but victory cannot be taken for granted. Dhoni knows the bowlers will have to deliver against a line-up that includes matchwinning batsmen like Chris Gayle, Marlon Samuels and Kieron Pollard.

“The Gayle factor will always be there,” the Indian captain said. “He is an individual who has a big impact on the game. It’s always good to get him out early. “With a new ball at either end, overcast conditions and a bit of help from the wicket, our fast bowlers will have a fair chance to get him. “If you don’t get batsmen like Chris Gayle out early, most likely he will take you out of the game.” Dhoni said the Oval pitch was the same on which the West Indies lost eight wickets while trying to surpass Pakistan’s 170, adding that the bowlers could dominate again. “It has a bit of a grass covering and there was bounce in the last game, so fast bowlers will get help,” he said. “But since we are playing on a used wicket, the spinners could get some more turn.” Dhoni said he was a huge fan of one-day cricket since it was a mix of Test and Twenty20 formats, but did not favour constant changes in rules. “We are trying to make a one-dayer like a T20 game,” he said. “Too many changes can actually spoil the recipe at times.” AFP

Amla buoyed by new-look Proteas BIRMINGHAM: Hashim Amla hailed South Africa’s rising stars after a team missing injured strike bowlers Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel returned to winning ways at the Champions Trophy. Man-of-the-match Amla laid the foundation for a 67-run victory over Pakistan in a day/night clash at Edgbaston on Monday. The opener’s typically stylish 81 off 97 balls was the centrepiece of South Africa’s 234 for nine made after skipper AB de Villiers won the toss. Amla’s excellence is no surprise but what caught the eye was when Chris Morris, called up after Morkel suffered a tournament-ending leg injury in the Proteas’ opening loss to India, marked his one-day international debut with a new-ball burst of two wickets for 10 runs in 19 balls. Left-arm paceman Lonwabo Tsotsobe chipped in with two for 23 and Ryan McLaren, a right-

arm seamer like Morris, wrapped up the match with a career-best four for 19 as the Proteas won with five overs to spare. South Africa arrived at this tournament without injured Test captain and opening batsman Graeme Smith while veteran allrounder Jacques Kallis was omitted for personal reasons. Yet in beating Pakistan so comprehensively, South Africa have now given themselves a real chance of qualifying for the semifinals when they face the West Indies in their final Group B match in Cardiff on Friday. “Not having Dale and Morne in the team, any bowling attack will miss them,” said Amla. “And obviously Jacques and Graeme are not here and their experience is missed. “But it’s water under the bridge for us. We have new guys in the team, new energy, and fortunately a victory like this will boost the confidence of everybody.” AFP

Kundra suspended amid spot-fixing clean-up Officials suspended Kundra and announced plans for a clean-up of the sport. NEW DELHI: Cricket officials on Monday suspended the coowner of an Indian Premier League (IPL) team and announced plans for a major clean-up of the sport after an illegal betting and spot-fixing scandal. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) held an emergency meeting in New Delhi into the Rajasthan Royals IPL franchise and its co-owner Raj Kundra (right) amid the ongoing scandal. “Mr Raj Kundra has been suspended, pending an inquiry, from all cricketing activities," BCCI interim head Jagmohan Dalmiya told reporters after the meeting. Kundra, the businessman husband of Bollywood actress and former contestant on UK show “Celebrity Big Brother” Shilpa Shetty, has admitted illegally betting on his own team, according to police.

Three Royals players, including Test fast bowler Shanthakumaran Sreesanth, and numerous bookmakers have been arrested over allegations of spot-fixing during the recently-completed edition of the IPL. After Monday’s meeting Dalmiya released a blueprint called “Operation Clean-up” aimed at stamping out “sleaze” and corruption in the multi-billion dollar Twenty20 tournament. Under the plan, IPL players, team owners and support staff face a “strict code of conduct". Owners’ movements in team dugouts and dressing rooms during matches will be restricted. “Removal of sleaze; no cheerleaders, no after-match parties for players and support staff," the 12-point plan reads. Cellphone towers will be jammed during IPL matches,

and players will have to “disclose all financial transactions they are carrying out with any particular organisation or person". A timetable for implementing the plan, which also includes a ban on players using microphones and earplugs during matches, was unclear. “If we are able to clean it, it will be a great service to the game," Dalmiya said. Sreesanth, along with his teammates Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan, were arrested last month over allegations they deliberately bowled badly in exchange for tens of thousands of dollars during IPL matches. Police say the trio were acting under orders from international crime syndicates to give away a specific number of runs in certain overs after striking deals with bookmakers. The players have denied wrongdoing. AFP

LOS ANGELES: Organizers of the Breeders’ Cup horse racing event, a 14-race showdown with $27 million in prize money on the line, said Monday they will stage the 2014 thoroughbred event at Santa Anita Park. That will mark the third year in a row that the facility in suburban Los Angeles will host the event, with the 30th Breeders’ Cup set for next November 1-2. The 2014 event will be staged on October 31-November 1. Santa Anita hosted the Breeders’ Cup for the sixth time last year, having also staged the event in 1986, 1993, 2003, 2008 and 2009. “Santa Anita has proven to be an outstanding host for our championships," said Breeders’ Cup president Craig Fravel. “We are delighted to extend our partnership with Santa Anita for a third consecutive year." Breeders’ Cup officials said no decisions have been made regarding sites for the event beyond 2014.

Handshake could signal end to feud

ARDMORE: Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia shook hands on the practice tee Monday at the US Open, a signal that their long-running feud might have seen its final days. Details about the handshake and a brief conversation afterward are expected to come on Tuesday when each man will have a news conference ahead of Thursday’s start of the 113th US Open at Merion Golf Club. The moment was believed to be the first face-to-face meeting between Woods and Garcia since last month when the Spaniard attempted a joke about what he might serve Woods should they have dinner together. “We will have him round every night. We will serve fried chicken," Garcia said. The reference to fried chicken, seen as an insult to AfricanAmericans, sparked a racism furore much the same way that

Woods and Garcia shook hands on the practice tee, a signal that their long-running feud might have seen its final days. Fuzzy Zoeller had in 1997 when he suggested Woods serve fried chicken at a Masters champions dinner. Garcia later apologized in a statement and at a news conference and said that he wanted to do so in person to 14-time major champion Woods, who had quickly tried to put the comment behind him in a Twitter posting.. “The comment that was made wasn’t silly. It was wrong, hurtful and clearly inappropriate," Woods tweeted, but added. “It’s long past time to move on and talk about golf."

Jack Nicklaus, who has won a record 18 majors, called the incident “stupid” and said it was time to move on. Woods, who has won four times this year and this week seeks his first major title since the 2008 US Open, said dealing with racial stereotypes is nothing new for him. “Well, I live with it," he said. “It’s happened my entire career. It exists all around the world, not just in the sport of golf. “I know a lot of people are trying to make a difference and trying to make it more fair for all of us." Woods and Garcia, rivals for more than a decade, had an incident while playing together in the third round of last month’s Players Championship, with Garcia upset that Woods played when he was preparing a shot and Woods saying he had been told by course marshals that Garcia had already hit his shot.
