Continued from page 3A skill improves the chances for academic and career success. Jim Trelease, an author and proponent of reading aloud to children said reading is the ultimate weapon destroying ignorance, poverty, and despair before they can destroy us. A nation that doesn’t read much doesn’t know much. A nation that doesn’t know much is more likely to make poor choices in the home, the marketplace the jury box, and the voting booth. Those decision ultimately affect the entire nation. Partnering agencies such as Smart Start of Pender County, Pender County Health Department, Pender County Social Services, Pender County Schools PreK Program, a host of daycare and child care providers and others are finding new ways to work together to reach young families to strengthen and support literacy. They all realize that early pre-literacy activity is so important in helping a child learn to read when they go to school. We are all better off when young children succeed in school and flourish as stable, responsible adults impacting the generations that follow. Reading provides that foundation for learning and achieving. Look in this column Feb. 18 for more information about 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten. It will be launched in early March. You’ll read how other community partners, such as Smart Start of Pender County, are coming together to encourage parents to read to their children at home. It is said that children are made readers in the laps of their parents. The libraries in Burgaw and Hampstead have long offered services to young families in a variety of ways. For parents and caregivers who can bring children to the libraries, weekly programs for preschoolers,

Continued from page 4A dollars over and bought four chances. After all, if the purchase was guided by the Divine Hand, wouldn’t one chance have been enough? If the Divine is behind picking the right numbers, I would think He would get them right the first time. Or maybe I got my just deserts for greed. Greed or not, in the end, I think I got my money’s worth. The first two tickets I bought I had left in the store’s bag, not looking at them until the day of the drawing, so that if we did win, we would not know if the winning ticket was mine or Kathy’s. We had agreed in advance to evenly divide the winnings immediately, so that disagreements would not develop later over who spends what. At least one of us, we both thought, might be wiser managers of a windfall of cash. Alas, we are probably no different from anyone else. I was working in the yard the day before the drawing. My neighbors came walking

Beginning in the 1990s with Smart Start funding, the public library’s Early Literacy Outreach Program continues to loan large bags of children’s books to teachers at Head Start Centers, preschools, and child care centers throughout Pender County. Up to 50 classrooms of pre-K children enjoy story times shared by their teachers reading library books. The library relies mostly on cash donations and grants to maintain this busy collection of resources. by and I took a break from the yard work, and we talked about the lottery. They had bought some tickets, too, and asked, “What would you do? The first time I answered the question it was an off the top of the head kind of answer. “I’d drive to the nearest Porsche dealer and get a 911Carrera (always a car of my dreams). I’d leave the door open and the lights on. With the ‘big one’ I would no doubt I would have ‘people’ who could come back and pack up the belongings and follow me to my new digs. I planned to figure the rest out on my way to the Porsche dealer. That was before the first drawing, the one in which I had won four dollars. Confident now, and us-

Nicholas “Nick Ryan Dillon WILMINGTON -- Nicholas “Nick Ryan Dillon, 34, of Wilmington, died unexpectedly in his home on January 6, 2016. Nick loved hunting, competition and recreational shooting, and volunteering at his son’s school. He is survived by his wife, Adrienne Anderson Dillon; son, Walker Phoenix Dillon; parents, Toi and Brian Pettus; brothers, Adam, Baron, Cade, Sam, and Jonah; sisters, Marissa, Erika, and Amberly; grandparents, Obbie and Mary Blanton, and Eugene and Loretta Pettus; many aunts, uncles, and cousins; and his beloved Great Danes, ing some thought, I ditched the idea of randomly generated numbers. Instead, I looked up the chart of winning numbers from previous drawings and wrote down the top ten winning numbers. I told Kathy about the wisdom of my strategy and she asked what number we would use for the power ball, and suggested that since we were coming up on our 17th anniversary, we should use that number, and I thought that was wise, and using the progression through 18, 19 and 20 indicated a level of commitment. We had read about the dire consequences that others, maybe less sophisticated, had run into in squandering their new wealth. We would provide for our immediate needs and put the rest away for the future. We were confident that we could be good stewards of our responsibility, and remain level headed and rational. The first inklings of that fallacy came on the way home from the store where we had bought the new chances. It’s those first two words, ‘immediate needs’ that opened Pandora’s box. I had only been partially joking about the Porsche. Now, we thought, we had better do some serious planning. We agreed on the 50/50 split as before, and the first action would be to get the

Then the ‘immediate needs’ took over and I, at least, planned for a few upgrades. My current car is 10 years old, so that was a no-brainer, a new SUV of some sort, with all the mod-cons required for someone driving himself to the country club. I once had a 25-year-old Cessna 172 airplane, the ‘Chevy’ of the sky. The plane upgrade morphed into a new Gulfstream G650, suitable enough to pick up the kids and grandkids for gettogethers, and range enough for junkets to Disneyland Tokyo. Oprah has a Bombardier Global Express XRS. It’s nice. My planning would include a trip to Raleigh to find an attorney, but this time, instead of driving, I would arrange for a charter jet to pick us up at ILM for the trip
