ROOM 1

THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

The American Musket was important tool during the American Revolution. With the fire power, The American Patriots were able to win independence from Great Britain. Thus leading to the Thirteen Colonies becoming a part of the establishment of the United States. Taking place between 1765 and 1783, The American Revolution began as the colonies wanted separation from Great Britain as they did not believe in “Taxation Without Representation.� The colonist felt that if they were not represented in Parliament that they should not be governed by the Great Britain.


ROOM 2

THE CONSTITUTION

The United States Constitution is the most important document in United States history. The Constitution embodies the rules and laws to protect citizens rights. The Constitution created three branches of government: Executive, Legislative and Judicial. The Executive Branch consists of the President and executes laws. The Legislative Branch contains the Senate and the House of Representatives. They are responsible for making laws. The House and the Senate can over rule and veto The President by a 2/3rds vote. The Judicial Branch interprets the laws and makes rulings and administers justice.


ROOM 3

AMERICAN EXPANSION

In 1803, The Louisiana Purchase was a land purchase by United States President Thomas Jeerson. Jeerson bought the territory from Napoleon Bonaparte of France for $15 million dollars. The purchase doubled the size of the United States by adding 828,394 square miles which included: Oklahoma, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, Louisiana, Texas, Minnesota, Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota & South Dakota. This was an important purchase that would give control to the United States of the Mississippi River and Port of New Orleans. The significance of this was important to the farmers for shipping their goods, thus creating trade opportunities and economic growth.


ROOM 4

CIVIL WAR & RECONSTRUCTION

The chairs and table featured from the Civil War are in the collection of the National Museum of American History. The significance of these artifacts are that General Ulysses S. Grant (Union) and Robert E. Lee (Confederacy) sat in them to negotiate the details and terms to end of the Civil War on April 9, 1865. The Civil War had a massive impact on American history due to the controversy over slavery.


ROOM 5

INDUSTRIALIZATION IN THE GILDED AGE

John D. Rockefeller

Henry Ford

The Industrialization in the Gilded Age from 1870 to the 1900’s, this was a historic period in time for the United States as they surpassed other countries in their economic growth.

JP Morgan, John D. Rockefeller & Henry Ford were called “Captains of Industry.” John D. Rockefeller founded Standard Oil, JP Morgan was a banker who financed railroad and steel companies, and Henry Ford founded Ford Automobiles thus revolutionizing mass market production of automobiles. These three men contributed their personal fortune to grow the economy by creating jobs, increase productivity and through manufacturing.


ROOM 6

PROGRESSIVE ERA AND POPULISM

The Progressive Era and Populism movement took place from the 1890s to the early 1900’s. During this period of time people were dissatisfaction with the government as they felt their problems were not being addressed. Furthermore, supporters thought that special interest groups were in control. Issues such as women’s suffrage, secret ballots and other election related topics were at the forefront of supporters from the movements. The image depicts important issues related to the problems at hand including: class privilege, monopoly, bribery, trust, rule or ruin.


ROOM 7

AMERICAN IMPERIALISM & WORLD WAR I

The Harlem Hellfighters were an African American infantry from World World I. They faced discrimination, racism and segregation from their fellow countrymen. The Harlem Hellfighters spent the most time of any unit in combat during World War I. Unfortunately they were not recognized for their valiant efforts in the war.

General Pershing who led the war efforts said that American soldiers would only fight under an American flag, under an American force. However, this did not pertain to the African American’s in the Harlem Hellfighters as General Pershing gave them to the French Army. Upon returning to the United States, the Harlem Hellfighter’s did not receive the same recognition or support as the white American soldiers. Even while fighting for democracy, they were also fighting for their rights to be citizens. Many of the Hellfighers died penniless as they returned from the war with injuries so that they could not work.


ROOM 8

ROARING 20S/GREAT DEPRESSION/NEW DEAL

The 19th Amendment was ratified on August 18, 1920 giving women the right to vote. This was the most significant right that American women gained. Before the 1920s, women were considered second class citizen’s and were not allowed to speak up. It took almost 100 years for women to win the right to vote. Women finally had the same rights as men to the responsibilities to citizenship.
