Fast-paced, precision-driven, and fueled by the undeniable bond between horse and rider, barrel racing has long been a showcase of athleticism, grit, and horsemanship. This high-energy event not only highlights the quick footwork of the American Quarter Horse but also celebrates the trailblazing spirit of the women who brought the sport into the national spotlight nearly a century ago.
A Historic Ride: The Birth of Barrel Racing
Barrel racing traces its roots back to 1928 in Stamford, Texas, when women were first given the chance to demonstrate their riding skills inside the rodeo arena — a groundbreaking move at a time when opportunities for female competitors were rare. Originally featuring just two barrels and a figure-eight pattern, the event quickly evolved. By the 1950s, the now-famous cloverleaf pattern, using three barrels arranged in a triangular formation, became the standard.
The City of St. Cloud is inviting residents to lace up their sneakers and get moving at Zumba-Gold in the Park, a free community fitness event designed for all activity levels. This energizing morning of movement will take place on Saturday, May 17, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Performing Arts Pavilion, located at 1104 Lakeshore Blvd.
Attendees can look forward to a fun-filled day of wellness featuring Zumba-Gold, a lower-impact version of the popular dance fitness program, perfect for active older adults and beginners. Osceola County Commissioner for District 2 Viviana Janer led local leaders, housing advocates, and community members on Wednesday at Kissimmee Lakefront Park during the Osceola County Fair Housing Walk—an event dedicated to raising awareness about fair and equal housing opportunities across the county.

Doctors’ Center Hospital|Orlando Health Puerto Rico welcomed a group of pre-medical students from the University of Central Florida this month as part of an educational mission on the island.
Sixteen students from the student-led nonprofit International Medical Organization (IMO) visited Doctors’ Center Hospital Orlando Health – San Fernando de la Carolina, Doctors’ Center Hospital Orlando Health – San Juan and Doctors’ Center Hospital Orlando Health – Bayamón, where they shadowed physicians and clinical staff in the emergency department, observed two orthopedic surgeries in operating rooms, prepared welcome kits for patients and toured an ambulance. They also had the opportunity to hear testimonies from faculty members of the hospitals they visited about their personal experiences as doctors on the island.
This is the second consecutive year that students from IMO visited Doctors’ Center Hospital|Orlando Health Puerto Rico.

Appreciative pet owners from around District One in Osceola County came together on Saturday for a Free Pet Microchip Event, hosted by District 1 Osceola County Commissioner Peggy Choudhry in collaboration with Osceola County Animal Services.
Held at 2925 International Drive (former Publix), the drive-up event aimed to enhance pet safety and help ensure lost animals have a better chance of being returned to their families.
The event, which took place from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, was open exclusively to Osceola County residents, with free microchipping provided while supplies lasted.
Commissioner Choudhry, who personally welcomed and assisted attendees, expressed her gratitude for the community’s participation:

Osceola County hosted a Free Tree Giveaway on Thursday at Osceola County Fire Station 73, located at 7855 Osceola Polk Line Road. The event was led by District 1 Commissioner Peggy Choudhry, who, alongside Osceola County Fire Chief Larry Collier, kicked off the morning with a ceremonial tree planting in front of the fire station.
The event offered both Maple and Holly trees to residents for free on a first-come, firstserved basis—promoting environmental stewardship and community involvement.

A significant milestone was reached this week at Orlando Health St. Cloud Hospital as construction progresses on a transformative expansion designed to elevate patient care in the community. Marked by a ceremonial “topping out,” the hospital celebrated the placement of the final beam on its new two-story, 20,000-square-foot expansion that will house two state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization laboratories and a brand-new 10-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
The expansion, located on the northwest corner of the hospital campus, reflects a major investment in advanced cardiovascular and critical care services. The new facilities are expected to open in January 2026 and will provide patients with faster, more advanced treatments without needing to travel outside the community.

Osceola Arts has begun work on its latest public mural, “The Garden Within,” at 219–231 Broadway in downtown Kissimmee. This vibrant piece, part of the ongoing ARTisNOW Public Murals Project, is being brought to life by Tampa-based artist Taylor Smith, known professionally as Dreamweaver.
The southwest-facing wall, currently being transformed, will soon feature a radiant blend of purples, pinks, blues, and greens, symbolizing growth, transformation, and the beauty of divine creation.
Dreamweaver’s signature fusion of abstract and realism will showcase sweeping wings—representing freedom and resilience—alongside glowing flowers that embody persistence and renewal. The mural is inspired by the quote, “All beauty begins where the soul dares to grow.”
“We’re thrilled to welcome Dreamweaver to Kissimmee as she begins transforming this blank wall into a vibrant work of art,” said Brian Camacho, Osceola Arts’ new Public Arts Coordinator. “The community will have the unique opportunity to witness this creative process unfold in real time.”
During Monday’s Osceola County Board of County Commissioners meeting, the board officially adopted a proclamation declaring April 30, 2025, as Denim Day in Osceola County, reinforcing the county’s commitment to supporting survivors of sexual violence and raising awareness about the importance of prevention and education.
The proclamation was led by Chairwoman and District 2 Commissioner Viviana Janer, and presented to Lui Damiani, Executive Director of the Victim Service Center of Central Florida, an organization dedicated to providing comprehensive services for victims of sexual assault, violent crime, and traumatic circumstances.
Denim Day is observed annually on the last Wednesday of April as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The campaign originated as a response to a 1990s Italian court case in which a rape conviction was overturned because the victim wore tight jeans.
The ruling sparked global outrage and launched a movement that uses denim as a symbol of protest against victim-blaming and as a show of solidarity with survivors.
“This proclamation I read is more than symbolic—it’s a call to action. It reminds us that education, awareness, and compassion are essential tools in preventing sexual violence and supporting healing.”” said Chairwoman Janer.

Innovation was center stage Tuesday as Osceola County leaders, federal partners, and industry trailblazers gathered at NeoCity for the official ribbon cutting of the U.S. National Science Foundation’s Florida Semiconductor Engine. The milestone event began with “Coffee & Conversation” at the OC Building in Kissimmee, featuring Tawny Olore, P.E., CEO of the newly renamed Engine, who unveiled a new identity and website—SemiconductorEngine.org—solidifying Florida’s place at the forefront of U.S. semiconductor innovation.
The Florida Semiconductor Engine, formerly known as the Central Florida Semiconductor Innovation Engine, is one of only 10 programs nationally selected by the NSF’s Regional Innovation Engines initiative. It was awarded up to $15 million in initial funding and has the potential to receive up to $160 million over the next 10 years to drive growth in the semiconductor advanced and specialty packaging industry.
“This is more than just a ribbon cutting,” said Olore. “It marks the beginning of an unprecedented partnership-driven effort to develop the infrastructure, workforce, and ecosystem needed to power the next generation of semiconductor technology—right here in Florida.”

But this initiative is about more than just trees—it’s about promoting unity, sustainability, and a long-term vision for a greener, healthier Osceola County.
“As Osceola County continues to grow, so does the demand for housing and infrastructure,” said Chairwoman Viviana Janer. “But we are equally committed to ensuring that progress doesn’t come at the cost of our environment. Orlando Health’s Hospital Care at Home program, which delivers acute hospitallevel care directly to adult patients in the comfort of their own homes, has successfully treated over 2,000 patients across Central Florida since its launch in February 2023.
The program, available to Orlando Health patients who meet specific clinical criteria determined by emergency department and hospital staff, is now available through Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center, Orlando Health South Seminole Hospital, Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips Hospital, Orlando Health Emergency Room –Osceola, Orlando Health Emergency Room – Randal Park, Orlando Health Emergency Room – Lake Mary, Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies, Orlando Health St. Cloud Hospital and Orlando Health South Lake Hospital. In June, Hospital Care at Home celebrated its 1,000th patient admitted into the program.

The Osceola County Historical Society, known as Osceola History, has appointed Dawn Snell as its Interim Executive Director, the organization’s Board of Directors announced this week.
Snell, who joined Osceola History in 2022, brings a dynamic vision for the organization’s future along with extensive experience in museum operations and a deep commitment to preserving Osceola County’s heritage. Her promotion marks a new chapter for the organization, following the retirement of former Executive Director Kimberly Murray, who served in the role since 2018.
Prior to this appointment, Snell held key leadership positions within the organization, including Activities and Outreach Manager and most recently, Assistant Director. She has played an instrumental role in enhancing public programming, expanding community partnerships, and overseeing improvements at both Pioneer Village and the Welcome Center & History Museum.

Osceola County Fire Rescue & EMS, alongside District 3 Osceola County Commissioner Brandon Arrington, county leaders, and project partners, officially broke ground on the future site of Fire Station 43 in Campbell City—signaling the beginning of an exciting new chapter for one of the county’s most established and dedicated fire stations.
“Station 43 is an institution in this community,” Osceola County Commission Vice Chairman and District 3 Commissioner Brandon Arrington said. “We are so proud that this new facility will give them the space and the resources to continue that tradition of service for many years to come.”
Station 43 has been serving the community in Campbell City for decades, originally founded as the all-volunteer Campbell City Fire Department; when OSCFR was created in 1989, the station was brought into the department and remained a volunteer station for several years.
The station became a “combination” station several years later when a paidprofessional EMS rescue unit was added, transitioning to full around-the-clock staffing in 2002.
Residents and families in Osceola County now have a greater opportunity to achieve homeownership through the updated SHIP Home Purchase Assistance Program. This initiative is designed to make owning a home more accessible by providing financial support and guidance to eligible participants.
The updated program includes:

On Friday, the School District of Osceola County proudly celebrated the official ribbon cutting of its newest educational facility—Voyager K-8, a state-of-the-art prototype school serving kindergarten through eighth grade students in the rapidly growing Sunbridge community.

One of the most memorable highlights of the event came from a moving performance of the National Anthem by student Briella, whose heartfelt rendition stirred the audience and captured the pride and promise of Voyager K-8. The event continued with a studentled inspiration program featuring musical performances, student welcomes, a jazz band presentation, and a special time capsule ceremony.
“This school represents more than just a new building—it represents opportunity, innovation, and community,” said Dr. Shanoff. “We are proud to open a space that will empower our students from kindergarten through eighth grade with the tools they need to thrive.”
Osceola County Fire Rescue & EMS, alongside District 3 Osceola County Commissioner Brandon Arrington, county leaders, and project partners, officially broke ground on the future site of Fire Station 43 in Campbell City—signaling the beginning of an exciting new chapter for one of the county’s most established and dedicated fire stations.
“Station 43 is an institution in this community,” Osceola County Commission Vice Chairman and District 3 Commissioner Brandon Arrington said. “We are so proud that this new facility will give them the space and the resources to continue that tradition of service for many years to come.”
Station 43 has been serving the community in Campbell City for decades, originally founded as the all-volunteer Campbell City Fire Department; when OSCFR was created in 1989, the station was brought into the department and remained a volunteer station for several years. The station became a “combination” station several years later when a paid-professional EMS rescue unit was added, transitioning to full around-the-clock staffing in 2002.
“The new fire station stands as a lasting symbol to the commitment we have for public safety,” said District 1 Commissioner Peggy Choudhry. “This new home for Station 43 will not only provide comfort and security to our residents and visitors but also serve as a proud and empowering space for our dedicated firefighters and paramedics.”
For a second time in three playoff games against Lake Nona, Harmony’s starting pitcher failed to get out in the first inning. And for the second time in those three outings, it simply did not matter.
The Longhorns got five RBI from Clayton Williams and Jariel Perez bashed a home run to lead Harmony to a 13-3 win over Lake Nona and a sweep of their best of three series in a Class 7A, Region 3 quarterfinal.
With the win, Harmony will now host Jupiter (21-8) in a best of three regional semifinal that starts next Wednesday. Jupiter advanced to the round with a sweep of St. Cloud (10-0, 2-1) in a doubleheader yesterday. The first two games will be played at Harmony, with a third – if necessary game – slated for Jupiter on May 3.
“There is no question Jupiter is going to be a terrific challenge for us,” Harmony coach Heath Williams said. “They are a terrific team and I know they are looking to avenge last year’s loss to us in the playoffs.” In last year’s single elimination format, Harmony traveled to Jupiter and upset the highly-favored Warriors, 10-6, to reach the regional final.
On Saturday, the top 160 high school weightlifters gathered at St. Cloud Gymnasium for the Class 3A, Region 3 championships. Surprisingly, the largest roar from the crowd did not come for St. Cloud record-setting hometown lifter Mikey Ziss or any of the other competitors trying to qualify for next week’s state championships.
Instead, the loudest applause was reserved for an athlete who captured both the spotlight and the hearts of everyone in the gym.
When Marvin Cherry stepped to the platform to attempt a clean-and-jerk lift, practically every competitor gathered around the platform and shouted encouragement as Cherry successfully completed the lift. As he completed it, the crowd still exploded in applause for Cherry, a Poinciana special education senior with Down’s Syndrome.
It was a culmination of an outstanding season for Cherry, who was competing at the varsity level in a sport he loves.
Cherry became interested in weightlifting through Special Olympics, but when that seasonal program ended in the Fall, his mother Sheron Boothe contacted the Poinciana High to see what other programs might become available.
