Harmony’s Nelson Toro, Rey Ortiz to Wrestle at Division-1 Level

Nelson Toro, who became the second state wrestling champion in Harmony High School history, and Rey Ortiz, who placed third in states at the highly competitive 138pound weight class, will both continue their careers at the Division-1 collegiate level after signing scholarship papers over the weekend.

Toro, which means Bull in Spanish, will literally become a Bull after signing during a Friday evening ceremony at St. Cloud’s Beef O’Brady’s Restaurant to join the University Buffalo Bulls wrestling program.

As a senior, Toro posted a 46-0 record – winning the Class 3A, 285-lb. state championship with a 7-4 win over Palmeto Ridge’s Austin Foye in the finals. The win capped an incredible undefeated season for Toro, who moved up from the 220-lb. weight class a year ago and was often giving up 30, 40 or even more pounds to his opponents.

He joins Sawyer Root as the only two Harmony wrestlers to win a state title. Root was a transfer student from Alaska, so Toro become the first Harmony state champion to have spent all four years of his high school career in the program.

“AbsolutelynodisrespecttoSawyerandhisgreataccomplishments, butNelsonis ourfirst‘home-grown’champion,” Harmony coach Vic Lorenzano says. “Itwasboth excitingandgratifyingtowatchhimgrowinourprogramandbecomebotha championandateamleader.”

FWC reminds anglers to release reef fish with the right tools

Summer is in full swing and so is the busy fishing season in Florida, the Fishing Capital of the World! If you plan on targeting reef fish from a vessel on one of your upcoming fishing trips, make sure you have a descending device and/ or venting tool rigged and ready in case some of your fish show signs of barotrauma and will need a little help to get back down to depth.

Barotrauma is a pressure-related injury that occurs in fish when they are brought from deep water up to the surface. To help you identify the signs of barotrauma remember B.I.P.S.: Bloated belly, Intestines extruding, Popeye and Stomach protruding out of the mouth. If your fish displays one or more of these symptoms, it is suffering from barotrauma and needs assistance to get back down to proper depth to survive another day.

Don’t Give Thieves the Keys: Protect Your Ride During National Vehicle Theft Prevention Month

Americans put in long hours to afford motor vehicles. Whether it’s a family minivan hauling kids to school and parents to work, or a sporty hot rod that’s fulfilling a longawaited retirement dream, that hard-earned vehicle should never end up in the hands of thieves. July is National Vehicle Theft Prevention Month. This month, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is warning vehicle owners about the threat of vehicle theft.

Vehicle theft is a multi-billion-dollar industry in the United States, costing vehicle owners more than $8 billion in 2022 alone. That same year, more than one million vehicles were stolen in the United States, accounting for a 25% increase in vehicle theft totals over the previous few years. Historically, passenger cars made up more than 74% of all stolen motor vehicle. Estimates show that approximately one motor vehicle is stolen every 32 seconds.

Gunner Holland, Osceola High School wrestler severely burned while at wrestling camp, on road to recovery

Gunner Holland, a two-time state wrestling champion and a rising senior at Osceola High School, was severely injured in a freak burning accident late last week while attending a wrestling camp at Lake Highland Prep. Holland was was participating in the camp in preparation for a national tournament in Fargo, ND.

The incident occurred when Holland accidentally sat in some liquid that had spilled on a bench. The liquid turned out to be an undiluted cleaning solution that had apparently leaked out of a container. Holland immediately experienced a burning sensation, but he continued to compete in the camp for approximately three hours before the pain became too intense to bear.

Holland ended up being rushed to the emergency room and later admitted to the burn unit at Orlando Regional Medical Center with second degree akaline burns to his bottom and back of his legs.

“Gunner’s a tough kid and when he first noticed the burning sensation, he said he had no idea what was causing it,” his mother Samantha Gunner said. “He just kept going for several hours until the pain became too intense. I visited him on Monday and doctors are hoping he’ll be able to come home tonight or tomorrow. He’s just heartbroken that he is going to miss the opportunity to wrestle at Nationals. Because he played football the past three years, this would have been his first opportunity to go.”

Holland won Class 3A FHSAA State Championships as both a freshman and sophomore. Last year, wrestling through a host of injuries, he rallied to a third place finish.

Brandi Deal, a family friend of the Holland family, has started a Go fund Me Page to help Gunner and his family deal with medical bills and anticipated family expenses dealing with this unfortunate event.

Orlando Health: How soon should my child start swimming lessons?

Swimming can be a fun activity for kids, and with Florida’s warm weather, it can be a great way to cool down. But with drowning listed as the top cause of death for children between ages 1 and 4, swimming lessons are key to reducing the risk of tragedy.

So, at what age should you start considering swim lessons for your kids? This may be surprising, but getting them started by the age of 1 can reduce the risk of accidental drowning by 88 percent, according to a study published in the National Library of Medicine. Your child won’t be swimming laps as a toddler, but those early lessons can help them overcome a natural fear of water, while teaching critical survival tactics such as keeping their head above water.

INJURY LAW

Draper Law: Which vehicles are more likely to be involved in serious or fatal accidents?

Sadly, serious and fatal accidents take place on a daily basis in Central Florida. These crashes can happen in a number of ways and can be caused by not following traffic laws, inexperience, intoxication, distracted driving, fatigue, and medical issues.

Statistics show that fatal car accidents can often occur based on the type of vehicle. You may think that sports cars are most likely to be in crashes due to their speed and performance. However, according to the NHTSA, it’s the everyday cars, trucks, and SUVs on the roadways that are involved more frequently in serious or even deadly accidents, with sedans and pickup trucks accounting for more than three-quarters of fatal accidents. If you drive out on the roadways, here’s what you need to know about which vehicles have been involved in many of the crashes.

FAMILY LAW

Draper Law: Showing positive parenting

When parents of minor children divorce, it can be several years before their involvement with the court will end. Ideally, both parties will abide by their thoughtfully created parenting agreement and make changes which support their children’s wellbeing. However, as time passes and circumstances change, it is not uncommon for parents to disagree about what is in the best interest of their kids. A parent may also claim the other does not have good parenting abilities and seek to make legal changes to the parenting plan. In this situation, the other parent may have to provide evidence of their positive parenting skills.

The Draper Law Office has attorneys who are experienced with helping clients with child custody and parenting time issues and can help. Call 407.846.0075 today or go to DraperLawOffice.com to set up your free, no-obligation consultation in one of their three locations: St. Cloud, Kissimmee, and Orlando.

HEALTH

Ashlee Wright, MDA, RD, LD/N Outpatient Registered Dietitian Orlando Health

Overhauling your diet sounds daunting, right? But small tweaks can make a lasting difference in your health and nutrition. These five changes — plus tips on how to achieve them — can help you score quick improvements in how you feel and give you the confidence to try for even bigger changes over time.

Eat More Fiber

If you’re only going to try one thing on this list, make it adding more fiber — it’s easier than you think. Look at a list of high-fiber foods — odds are, you’ll find things there that you already love (for example raspberries and blackberries, which each pack 8 grams of fiber per cup). Increasing fruits and veggies you already like is as simple as adding them to your grocery list more frequently.

Why does fiber matter? It’s often associated with improved digestion — a big plus for anybody who has issues there — but it also helps with blood-sugar control and weight management. A lot of fiber-rich food is also rich in prebiotics, which helps to feed the “good” bacteria in our gut. A word of caution: Go slowly. The goal is 25 grams of fiber a day — most Americans don’t get anywhere near that, and if you add that much in a hurry you may feel bloated and uncomfortable while your body adjusts. Instead aim to add about 5 grams a week until you reach the recommended amount.

Easy ways to start: Switch from white bread or pasta to whole wheat. For picky eaters, try the middle ground of breads and pastas with fiber added that don’t taste quite so wheaty.

Drink More Water

We know, we know — many people don’t like the taste of water. But being wellhydrated improves brain and digestive function, maintains your skin’s elasticity and keeps blood sugar better controlled (because it makes your blood more dilute and the sugars less concentrated than if you are dehydrated). You don’t have to guzzle from a jug — refilling a small cup multiple times a day can seem more doable at first. Try a bottle with a built-in infuser where you can add fresh fruit to flavor the water.

Hot Car Awareness: Life-saving tips to keep children safe in scorching temperatures

In just 10 minutes, the temperature of a parked vehicle can rise 20 degrees. The crack of a window, even by inches, is no match to combat the rising heat. This heat can be deadly, especially for children because their body temperatures rise five times faster than adults.

Although it may be hard to believe, children can easily be left behind in the car when parents are distracted, rushing, multi-tasking or have a change in routine. This is especially true during the summer months when kids are out of school and may have a different caretaker or driver.

For a child experiencing foster care, normalcy can look as simple as a new backpack or pair of shoes, providing a sense of belonging as they start a new school year. The campaign is designed to help offset some of the financial stresses many caregiver families experience as the kids head back to the classroom. In particular, new, unused backpacks, lunchboxes and water bottles are needed.
