St. Cloud Breaks Harmony Stranglehold On Girls OBC Track Title, Harmony Boys Stay On Top in OBC Track Championship

For the first time in four years, a school other than Harmony sits on top of the county girls’ track hierarchy.

While the Longhorn boys once again won the Orange Belt Conference Track championship, the St. Cloud girls slipped by Harmony to claim their seventh title in the last 12 years — but first since 2018. The Lady Bulldogs won four individual events and a relay to tally 167.5 points to beat the Lady Longhorns (160.5), Osceola (111) was third and Gateway (83.50).

On the boys side, Harmony won just four of 17 events but picked up three second place finishes and seven thirds to pile up 160 points and easily out-distance Gateway (119), who many thought would challenge for the team title.

Orlando Health: Is the Alkaline Water Hype True?

These days, consumers have more choices than ever when it comes to water — spring, filtered, flavored, carbonated, mineralized and more. Proponents of “alkalized” water say it offers possible health benefits ranging from cancer resistance and diabetes prevention to helping with weight loss, lowering cholesterol and improving energy. But before you spend your hard-earned cash on water, Orlando Health nutritionist Lisa Cooper, RD, says it’s important to know the facts.

On the pH scale of 1 to 14, alkalized water has a pH level of 8 or 9, while normal drinking water has a neutral pH of 7.0. However, not all alkalized water is the same. Most alkaline water sold in bottles is made by supplementing water with minerals such as calcium, magnesium and potassium. The type of alkaline water that some health studies have looked at is called “electrolyzed reduced water,” made through a water ionization process.

Draper Law: Which vehicles are more likely to be involved in serious or fatal accidents?

Sadly, serious and fatal accidents take place on a daily basis in Central Florida. These crashes can happen in a number of ways and can be caused by not following traffic laws, inexperience, intoxication, distracted driving, fatigue, and medical issues.

Statistics show that fatal car accidents can often occur based on the type of vehicle. You may think that sports cars are most likely to be in crashes due to their speed and performance. However, according to the NHTSA, it’s the everyday cars, trucks, and SUVs on the roadways that are involved more frequently in serious or even deadly accidents, with sedans and pickup trucks accounting for more than three-quarters of fatal accidents. If you drive out on the roadways, here’s what you need to know about which vehicles have been involved in many of the crashes.

Motor vehicle accidents stand as the leading cause of death among U.S. teens, with nearly 2,400 lives aged 16-19 lost in 2017 alone, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In addition to these tragic fatalities, approximately 300,000 teens in the United States were treated for injuries resulting from motor vehicle crashes that same year, highlighting the urgent need for preventative measures and education.

Many pediatric physicians have seen a lot of children in motor vehicle accidents because they weren’t wearing seatbelts or succumbed to peer pressure to drive too fast. While these are certainly sobering truths, crashes are largely preventable, especially if parents begin teaching teenagers early on about proper driving etiquette and habits.

WEAR YOUR SEATBELTS

Good driving habits begin early, with parents modeling the use of seatbelts and making it a general requirement for the whole family.

When teenagers start driving, there is a lot of peer pressure to break the speed limit and be reckless. No teen should have the privilege of driving their friends or siblings anywhere until they understand safely operating the car is their number one priority. Anything less is unacceptable behavior.

Consider using a free app like Life360 on your phone so you can keep a more watchful eye on your children. You’re able to tell not only where they are, but also how fast they are driving.

DON’T TEXT AND DRIVE

Strongly discourage distractions such as texting. Texting is bad, but even using a phone while driving can prove distracting.
