Orlando Health St. Cloud Hospital using defibrillators with enhanced shock capability for difficult-todefibrillate patients

Orlando Health St. Cloud Hospital will begin using defibrillators with an enhanced energy shock capability that can improve the odds of reviving difficult-to-defibrillate patients who experience sudden cardiac arrest.

The automated external defibrillator (AED) can deliver up to up to 360 joules when low-energy shocks fail to resuscitate a patient. Joules is the amount of energy needed for an AED to properly defibrillate someone.

The biphasic defibrillator sends the energy current in two directions: it travels to the heart and back through it a second time as it returns to its source.

Orlando Health: Starting Swim Lessons Early May Protect Your Child from Drowning

Drowning is the single leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4, and it’s one of the top causes of death for teens, too. That’s why swim lessons are an integral part of the layers of protection that can help prevent drowning.

WHEN SHOULD MY CHILD START SWIM LESSONS?

Many children can begin swim lessons after their first birthdays, though not all kids are ready at the same age. This recommendation by the American Academy of Pediatrics is supported by a study that found that children who begin swim lessons by age 1 can reduce the risk of accidental drowning by 88 percent.

INJURY LAW

Draper Law: Which vehicles are more likely to be involved in serious or fatal accidents?

Sadly, serious and fatal accidents take place on a daily basis in Central Florida. These crashes can happen in a number of ways and can be caused by not following traffic laws, inexperience, intoxication, distracted driving, fatigue, and medical issues.

Statistics show that fatal car accidents can often occur based on the type of vehicle. You may think that sports cars are most likely to be in crashes due to their speed and performance. However, according to the NHTSA, it’s the everyday cars, trucks, and SUVs on the roadways that are involved more frequently in serious or even deadly accidents, with sedans and pickup trucks accounting for more than three-quarters of fatal accidents. If you drive out on the roadways, here’s what you need to know about which vehicles have been involved in many of the crashes.

Orlando Health: How to Embrace the Snack – but Avoid the ‘Fourth Meal’

Snacking often gets a negative perception, and rightly so. A recent study revealed that some Americans effectively consume a “fourth meal” in calories through daily snacking. However, snacking can also present an opportunity for enjoyable self-care, depending on the choices you make for your snacks.

WHY DO WE SNACK?

Fact: If you don’t regularly consume satisfying, balanced meals, a couple of hours later you are going to be hungry. Snacks are a great way to fuel activities between meals, but we want to be sure that hunger is driving our decision to eat. Too many Americans engage in mindless or emotional eating, especially with prolonged screentime. Before you snack, think through the “why”— am I truly hungry, or are there other activities I could engage in to deal with stress, boredom or sadness?

GRAB AND GO

Making healthy snack choices starts with the foods we choose at the grocery store. When you’re shopping, review the label. Look for foods with lower saturated fat, sodium and added sugar. These ingredients are inflammatory and can compromise your health when consumed on a regular basis. Fruits, vegetables and other fresh snacks are nutrient-dense and offer a host of health benefits.

When you choose fresh produce snacks, prep the fruits and vegetables as soon as you get home. This makes them as easy to grab as the other convenience foods in your pantry. If you’re buying in bulk, don’t sit down with the whole bag — divide it into singleserving portions to keep you on track with daily nutrition goals.
