Osceola County’s College-Going Rate Soars to Fourth in State, Outperforming Orange and Seminole for the First Time

Officials from Osceola County, Valencia College, and the School District of Osceola County are celebrating a significant achievement: Osceola County students now have the fourth highest college-going rate in the state.

According to the Florida Department of Education, 63% of Osceola County high school graduates in 2022 enrolled in college, technical schools, or other post-secondary institutions within Florida one year after graduation. This represents a significant increase from the 47.3% in 2019-20 and 48.1% in 2020-21 enrollments.

This Saturday April 20th, communities nationwide will gather at local YMCA branches to celebrate Healthy Kids Day, an event designed to enhance the health and well-being of children. St. Cloud Weightlifter Junior Mikey Ziss Heads to FHSAA State Championships On Friday

If his current form holds, Friday’s FHSAA State Weightlifting Championship should be more of a coronation rather than a competition for St. Cloud High junior Mikey Ziss.

The defending state champion in both the Olympic (snatch plus clean-and-jerk) and Traditional (bench press plus clean-and-jerk), Ziss will be heavily favored to win both disciplines in the 119-lb. weight class after a dominating performance at regionals last week.

Ziss hoisted 205 in the snatch, 250 in the clean-and-jerk and 225 in the bench press to win the Olympic Title with a 455 total and the Traditional with 430 – winning by 185-lbs. and 140-lbs. respectively over the second place finishers. He earned overall “Lifter of the Meet” in both classifications at regionals.

Kissimmee Utility Authority Honored with National Award For Outstanding Safety Practices

Kissimmee Utility Authority has earned the American Public Power Association’s Safety Award of Excellence for safe operating practices in 2023. The utility earned Diamond Status in the category for utilities with 250,000 to 999,999 worker-hours of annual worker exposure.

More than 160 utilities entered the annual Safety Awards for 2023. Entrants were placed in categories according to their number of workerhours and ranked based on the most incidentfree records and overall state of their safety programs and culture during 2023. The incidence rate is based on the number of work-related reportable injuries or illnesses and the number of worker-hours during 2023, as defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Battle for the Osceola County All-Sports Trophy: OBC Action Heats Up With Five Championships This Week

With three schools locked in a tight race, the 2023-24 Orange Belt Conference All-Sports trophy will be up for grabs this week as OBC champions will be decided in five sports – including baseball, softball, boys’ volleyball and both boys and girls track and field.

Currently, the Harmony Longhorns sit in first place with 119.5 points. Harmony has won the last three OBC All-Sports trophies and eight of the last 12. St. Cloud, which won four times since 2012 but none since 2020, is in second place with 115.5 points. Celebration, fresh off a sweep in both boys’ and girls’ tennis, remains in shouting distance with 108 points.

Orlando Health St. Cloud Hospital’s Dr. Sarat Sabharwal performed the hospital’s first laparoscopic nephrectomy this month, a milestone for patient care.

Nephrectomy, or removal of a kidney, may be necessary when a patient has recurrent kidney infections, irreversible damage, long-term obstruction or tumors that indicate kidney cancer. Laparoscopic nephrectomy – a minimally invasive approach – uses tiny incisions in the abdomen that result in decreased blood loss, less pain, plus a shorter hospital stay and recovery. Many patients are able to return to full activity within 3-4 weeks after surgery.

Orlando Health: Is the Alkaline Water Hype True?

These days, consumers have more choices than ever when it comes to water — spring, filtered, flavored, carbonated, mineralized and more. Proponents of “alkalized” water say it offers possible health benefits ranging from cancer resistance and diabetes prevention to helping with weight loss, lowering cholesterol and improving energy. But before you spend your hard-earned cash on water, Orlando Health nutritionist Lisa Cooper, RD, says it’s important to know the facts.

On the pH scale of 1 to 14, alkalized water has a pH level of 8 or 9, while normal drinking water has a neutral pH of 7.0. However, not all alkalized water is the same. Most alkaline water sold in bottles is made by supplementing water with minerals such as calcium, magnesium and potassium. The type of alkaline water that some health studies have looked at is called “electrolyzed reduced water,” made through a water ionization process.

Sadly, serious and fatal accidents take place on a daily basis in Central Florida. These crashes can happen in a number of ways and can be caused by not following traffic laws, inexperience, intoxication, distracted driving, fatigue, and medical issues.

Statistics show that fatal car accidents can often occur based on the type of vehicle. You may think that sports cars are most likely to be in crashes due to their speed and performance. However, according to the NHTSA, it’s the everyday cars, trucks, and SUVs on the roadways that are involved more frequently in serious or even deadly accidents, with sedans and pickup trucks accounting for more than three-quarters of fatal accidents. If you drive out on the roadways, here’s what you need to know about which vehicles have been involved in many of the crashes.

Orlando Health: Making Self-Care a Daily Deal HEALTH

#SelfCareSunday may be the trendy hashtag, but nurturing body and soul should be a daily deal, says Dr. Meredith Watson-Locklear, an OB-GYN with Orlando Health Physician Associates. “My number one rule is ‘Make time for yourself,’ ” she says. “Even if it’s just 15 minutes a day. Everyone can find at least 15 minutes in their day, every day, to devote to self-care.” Hitting the pause button on your day doesn’t have to be complicated. To commit to self-care, schedule time each day to focus on yourself. Program it into your schedule, if you have to. When the time comes, walk around the block, listen to a podcast, take a bath or grab some crayons and color. Meditate. Call a friend for a quick chat. Take a power nap.

Healthy, Not Indulgent

“Everyone is so stressed and tired, but it’s important to your mental health to take time for you,” says Dr. Watson-Locklear. “Giving yourself permission to shake off stress is healthy, not indulgent.”

For some, working out is as meditative for the mind as it is good for the body. “Exercise is not a luxury,” says the doctor, who suggests hitting the gym, doing yoga or pounding the pavement at least 30 minutes 3 to 4 days a week. “Set a goal of exercising for six days a week. You will begin to feel better — mentally and physically — almost immediately.”

Good nutrition also can affect self-wellness. “Weight concerns are more than aesthetic, they can create or signal health issues,” she says. “When patients want to modify their behavior with food, I suggest they make one better choice each day — add a piece of fruit or another veggie. Bypass the extra cookies.”
