Osceola County Salutes Local “Unsung Heroes” During National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week

This week, April 14th through 20th, we celebrate National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, a time dedicated to acknowledging the indispensable role of telecommunications personnel in our public safety sectors. During Monday’s Osceola County Board of County Commissioners meeting, the county recognized our local Osceola County Sheriff’s Office 911 telecommunicators, for the vital service they provide to our community, “24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, including Christmas, New Years, Thanksgiving and all the other holidays,” as said by Commissioner Ricky Booth during the reading of the official proclamation.

These professionals, often the unsung heroes behind the scenes, include 911 call takers, dispatchers, technicians that maintain radio and emergency phone systems, and other telecommunications staff who ensure the safety and effectiveness of our community’s response to emergencies.

“I started in dispatch, and it’s not easy. They are actually the first on scene, they’re just not physically there, but mentally they are there talking people through very difficult situations, and it’s not easy. My hat goes off to them, and I thank you for recognizing them. They do a great job, and we have some of the best telecommunications in Osceola County,” Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez said during the board meeting.

Homeowners insurance or renter’s insurance typically doesn’t cover appliance damage caused by electric surges, but customers now have the option to protect expensive appliances through KUA’s Surge Protection Program. Items covered under the program include appliances such as air conditioning equipment, refrigerators, washers and dryers, dishwashers, microwaves, and electric ranges.

INJURY LAW

Draper Law: Which vehicles are more likely to be involved in serious or fatal accidents?

Sadly, serious and fatal accidents take place on a daily basis in Central Florida. These crashes can happen in a number of ways and can be caused by not following traffic laws, inexperience, intoxication, distracted driving, fatigue, and medical issues.

Statistics show that fatal car accidents can often occur based on the type of vehicle. You may think that sports cars are most likely to be in crashes due to their speed and performance. However, according to the NHTSA, it’s the everyday cars, trucks, and SUVs on the roadways that are involved more frequently in serious or even deadly accidents, with sedans and pickup trucks accounting for more than three-quarters of fatal accidents. If you drive out on the roadways, here’s what you need to know about which vehicles have been involved in many of the crashes.

Orlando Health: Keep It Cool — Three Steps to Hydration HEALTH

There’s no doubt about it: Central Florida summers are hot. That extra heat — coupled with high humidity — can put you at risk for dehydration and heat-related illnesses (HRIs). This is especially true when exercise and sports are involved. That’s why it’s important to understand three key steps to staying hydrated. They include getting enough fluids, knowing when to adjust your fluid intake based on temperature and activity levels, and recognizing the warning signs of dehydration.

Step 1: Get Enough Fluids

How do you know if you are getting enough fluids? As a general rule of thumb, you can stay hydrated by drinking eight cups of water – or 64 fluid ounces – each day. If you don’t like the taste of water, consider “dressing-up” water with fruits or vegetables. Water also is much more palatable when ice cold.

Step 2: Know When to Adjust

While exercising or playing sports in hot and humid conditions, you’ll need more fluids with greater frequency. If you plan to exercise for longer than one hour, you may need to supplement water with sports drinks to help replace electrolytes lost through sweating.

Step 3: Know the Signs of Dehydration

When you are well hydrated, your urine will be pale yellow or nearly clear. And, it’s relatively easy to know when you are dehydrated – you feel thirsty. Other dehydration signals to be aware of include dark yellow urine, headache, nausea, faintness and vomiting. Watch for these signs in children when they exercise or play sports in hot weather. Dehydration can lead to more serious HRI risks, including heat syncope, or fainting caused by high temperatures; heat exhaustion, a condition caused by heat and dehydration; and heatstroke, or a dangerous rise in body temperature.
