Wildcat soccer defeat Bosse, fall hard to Patriots By Steven Kochersperger Defense seems to be the name of the game lately for the Mount Vernon girls’ soccer team. The team continues to play great defense and do just enough offensively to win games as the season marches on. This week the Lady Cats played two tough games beating Bosse at home on Tuesday 1-0 in an impressive defensive display and dropping one they would like to forget at Heritage Hills on Saturday. On Tuesday the girls team ended up battling with the Bosse Bulldogs in a matchup that would see plenty of players leaving with some type of injury but not a lot of scoring going on. Both teams seemed to lock in early and the Bulldog and Wildcat defenses were on their games as both goalies and defensive players were successful in not allowing the other team to score. And in what seemed like a game that would end up going to the first team to score, it was Mount Vernon who took advantage of a Bosse foul to score the only goal of the game. Bosse’s goal happened just two minutes into the second half with the score knotted up at 0-0 giving a great opportunity to Mount Vernon on a penalty kick. Wildcat Hadlee Whoberry was the one to get the kick and she placed the ball in the back of the net for the Mount Vernon score with just 38:45 left in the game. The 1-0 lead would prove to be enough for Mount Vernon
as they fought off every and all Bosse offensive runs to win the game. Freshman Corinna Lambright continues to play well wherever she is needed and walked away with a shutout in goal. Lambright is not only an offensive force for the Wildcats when placed in an offensive possition, but she also continues to prove her defensive greatness as a goalie that can and will come through when needed. This 1-0 shutout gives her more experience on her plate as her freshman season progresses. The win does a lot for the Wildcat soccer program who continues to see signs of improvement through their hard work and perseverance. Their never give up attitude that begins at the top with the coaches and trickles down to each an every player on the field is evident to all who come out to watch the team play each game. That hard work was needed once again on Saturday as the team traveled to Heritage Hills to take on the always tough Patriots. The Heritage Hills program continues to be a thorn in the flesh to the Mount Vernon club and Mount Vernon needed all they could muster on Saturday. When all was said and done the Patriots were the ones smiling at the end beating the visiting Wildcats without a problem 7-0. Overall the Mount Vernon team is 5-6 on the season with just a few weeks left to play. And with sectionals around the corner the Wildcats will need all the defensive toughness they can muster to be able to advance in the state tournament. The games they have won and the ones they would like to forget about will all be learning experiences for the Cats as they continue to move forward on their schedule. The girls will be back in action this week as they travel to South Knox on Thursday before then taking on Big Eight Conference for Vincennes Lincoln this Saturday in Vincennes. The Lady Cats will continue to work hard to improve as a team and we all look forward to seeing that play out on the field. And while the team might not be in the place coach Kelly Cox might like at this point, he continues to know this is a young team that will hopefully continue to grow together. “We are a young team, a lot younger than last year,” Cox said. “We need to talk more and play great defense to get as many wins as we can. I think we might just surprise people when the season is all said and done.” Its that belief in his team that everyone in the program needs moving forward. The next home game for the Lady Cats will be Saturday October 5 against South Spencer.

The North Posey High School Inaugural Hall of Fame Induction ceremony has been postponed to Friday, Oct. 11 at North Posey High School. “With so much already going on with homecoming and with Forest Park an hour ahead of us, it seemed like a wise move to delay the ceremony,” said Posey County News Publisher Dave Pearce. The inaugural class will consist of three individuals and one team. Nominations were taken through a several-month period with a number of worthy nominees under considerations. Tickets for the event are $15 each which includes a catered meal. Please call the Posey County News office at 682-3950 to make reservations.
