OBITUARIES Edgar Vaughan Edgar L. Vaughan, 96 of New Harmony, died on February 1, 2014 at New Harmony Healthcare. He was born on March 31, 1917 in Richmond, Va., and raised there by his parents, Harper and Gracie (Thompson) Vaughan. H married i d Evelyn E l Weimer Wi He then Helen Crittenden and they preceded him in death. He moved to New Harmony in 2001 and made his home with his son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Judy Vaughan. Edgar worked for the RF&P Railroad for 42 years and retired as a Conductor from Amtrak in 1982. He was a member of the United States Power Squadrons. He belonged to the International Brotherhood of Magicians and served as President of the local chapter. He loved to go boating, garden and do magic tricks, and in his younger years, ballroom dancing. He was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Judy Vaughan of New Harmony; twelve grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Sue Walker; brother, Eppa who was killed in WWII as a Bomber Pilot; and grandson, Thomas Vaughan of New Harmony in 2005. A memorial service will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Kingdom Hall and will be collected by the funeral home. Raymond Schroeder Raymond P. Schroeder, 90, passed away Friday, February 7, 2014, at Pine Haven Health and Rehabilitation. He was born November 21, 1923, in Posey County to Albert and Mathilda (Jung) Schroeder. R lif l Ray was a life-long member of Zoar United Church of Christ, where he was one of three lifetime Trustees, former church treasurer, president, Sunday school teacher, and choir member. He was a former employee of Mead Johnson, worked with his brother at Schroeder Brick & Stone, retired from Babcock & Wilcox and farmed the home acreage all his life. Ray was a 4-H Leader and Fair Board Treasurer. Ray was an Army Veteran serving in the 359th Engineer Regiment during WWII. He was a Robinson Twp. Trustee. He was a volunteer and board member of the United Caring Shelter and a member of the Young at Heart Group. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Gertrude Lewis. Ray is survived by his wife of 65 years, Wilma ‘Jean’ (DaVault) Schroeder of Evansville; son, Rev. Daniel R. Schroeder (Jennifer) of West Orange, N.J.; daughters, Diane Kay Marheine (Bruce) of Sullivan, Ind., and Sharon Faye Lawson (Bruce) of Evansville; grandchildren, Benjamin and Joshua Schroeder, Richard Marheine, Tamara Chastain, and Luke and Makenzie Lawson; five great grandchildren, Eli, Carson, Timothy, Grace, and Jasper; and brothers, Harold Schroeder of Evansville and David Schroeder of Wadesville, IN. Services will be 10 a.m., Monday, February 10, 2014, at Zoar United Church of Christ, 4600 Church Road, officiated by Rev. John Motz and Rev. Dan Schroeder, with burial in Zoar UCC Cemetery. Friends may visit Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at Alexander West Chapel and Monday from 9 a.m. until service time at the church. Carolyn Hansen Carolyn Sue Hansen, 67, of Griffin, passed away Sunday, February 2, 2014 at Deaconess Hospital. She was born November 18, 1946 to Richard and Isabelle (Page) Pickerill. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband James Hansen, son Steve Hansen and sister Bobbie Burgess. Carolyn is survived by her daughter, Phyllis (Darrell) Brown; sons, Kenny (Elizabeth) Hansen, Augie (Jessica) Hansen, Tim (Beverly) Hansen, and Jack (Angie) Hansen; eight grandchildren and six step grandchildren and daughter-in-law Gayle Hansen. Anna Wadlington Anna Wadlington, 46, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away on February 7, 2014, surrounded by family. Anna was born in 1967, at Deaconess Hospital to David Stockton and Evelyn Staples. Anna i Mount M t Vernon V grew up in and graduated from Mount Vernon Senior High in 1985. Anna married Richard Wadlington on September 17, 2005. Anna conquered challenges throughout her life, beating and surviving cancer 22 years ago. In 1997, Anna was the first winner of Posey County’s Relay for Life Courage Award. Anna was active in community outreach programs for the disabled and a member of Salem-Huesler United Church of Christ. Anna was preceded in death by her father, David Stockton, and stepmother, Marietta Stockton. Surviving are her husband, Richard Wadlington; mother, Evelyn Staples; sisters, Lisa Loehr and husband, Kent and Karen Stockton; and brother, Eric Stockton and wife, Melissa; stepbrothers, Robert Jarboe, Jon Jarboe and wife, Kim and Jason Jarboe; and stepsister, Shannon Cenci and husband Palmer; sisters-in-law, Ann Wadlington, Pat Wadlington and Nancy Frazier and husband, Jon; stepsons, David Wadlington and Phillip Wadlington; and stepdaughter, Sarah Wadlington; two grandchildren; and 23 nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at Sunset Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Kenneth R. Williams, 46, of Evansville, passed away Saturday, February 8, 2014. He was born September 23, 1967, in Evansville. Kenny worked at Warehouse Services, Inc. for many years. H loved l d th td He the outdoors and was an avid hunter, fisherman, and pool player. Kenny was devoted to his family and loved to spend time with his children, companion, and dog, Bella. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles W. Williams. Kenny is survived by his daughter, Heather Duckworth (Tim) of Mount Vernon; son, Wes Williams of Wadesville; mother, Zolene ‘Sue’ Raguse of Evansville; brother, Vince Williams of Palm Springs, Calif.; half-brothers, Dennis Williams of Okla., and Wayne Williams of Ky.; devoted companion, Stephanie Turpin of Evansville and children, Maddie and Tyler; and lifelong friends, Mark Brown, John McGee, and Sam Browning. He will speak at the Working Men’s Institute in New Harmony on Thursday, February 13 at 7:30 p.m. Todd Glass is a member of law firm, Fine and Hatfield and advises business clients on the impact of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Under the Beams kicks off with ‘Centennial Concert’ Under the Beams Concert Series will kick off its 2014 season on February 22nd at 8pm in Murphy Auditorium with a ‘Centennial Concert’ featuring world renown Pokey LaFarge and his band. This season of musical celebration, commemorating New Harmony’s Bicentennial, presents three high energy performances now and will then align with the school year in the fall to begin the 2015 season. Pokey LaFarge is a musician, songwriter, band leader, entertainer, innovator and preservationist, whose wellrounded arsenal of talents has placed him at the forefront of American music. Over the last decade, Pokey has won the hearts of music lovers across the globe with his creative mix of early jazz, string ragtime, country blues and western swing, all while writing songs that ring true and fine in both spirit and sound. His music transcends the confines of genre and cleverly strides between numerous forms of traditional American music. He has appeared on the David Letterman Show, Prairie Home Companion, and venues throughout the US and Europe. Please join
us for this concert of centennial spirited music in New Harmony’s ‘centennial’ hall – Murphy Auditorium. The other two performances will feature The Jeremy Kittel Band on Saturday, April 5. With an unusual mix of mandolin, cello, and hammered dulcimer along with Jeremy’s violin, these award winning musicians bring an exciting mix of alternate styles steeped in tradition and presented with technical mastery. On Friday, May 23, a double billed performance will feature New Harmony’s favor-
ite sons and daughters who have moved on to the larger musical stage. The evening’s concert will include Swan Dive with Molly Felder, Bill DeMain, and Mickey Grimm, followed by David Tanner and his band, all from Nashville, Tenn. This concert also coordinates with New Harmony High School’s Alumni weekend and offers the opportunity for former students of the now closed school to spend an evening in their wellloved Murphy Auditorium. This season our concerts will be held in the historic
and beautifully restored Murphy Auditorium, 419 Tavern Street.
