OBITUARIES Roger Horacek In the early morning hours of January 2, 2017, Roger Thomas Horacek passed from his earthly life into his eternal rest to which he had prepared his entrance by faith. Roger was born November 16, 1948 in Evansville, Indith eldest ld t off four f hil ana, the children to Thomas Eugene and Ilse Dorsch Horacek, of Mount Vernon, Ind. He attended the Mount Vernon school system and graduated with the class of 1966 from Mount Vernon High School. He attended Vincennes University and earned a certificate as a linotype operator. The Mount Vernon Democrats employed him in that department until he entered the US Army. He served and was wounded in the 25th Infantry Division in the Viet Nam Theatre of Operation. He received the Purple Heart for his service. He furthered his education by attending and graduating from Lockyear’s Business College in Evansville. For a short period of time he was employed by General Electric in Mount Vernon. He then went to the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier. He retired after serving in that capacity for 35 years. Roger loved his children, his grandchildren and his many friends. On October 18, 1969 he married Peggy Lee Horacek and she survives along with their three sons, Roger Thomas II, Robert Shane and Rodney Lee (Lauren) Horacek; his mother, Ilse Dorsch Horacek; his grandchildren, Elise Marie, Ethan Robert, Kaylee Faye, Taylor Grace and Ellie Hope Horacek; and two sisters, Connie Jean (Dennis) Angel and Maryhelen (David) Allbritton. He was preceded in death by his brother, John Daniel Horacek; his father, Thomas E. Horacek, and grandparents, Konrad and Thea Dorsch, and Cecil Thomas Horacek. Military rites by Owen Dunn Post 5 were conducted at 3 p.m. on Friday January 6, 2017 immediately followed by a Memorial Service at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home at 1330 East Fourth Street, Mount Vernon, Ind. Visitation was from Noon until time of services. Burial will be held at a later date in Beech Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Disabled Veterans Organization or a favorite charity. Online condolences may be left at stendebackfamilyfuneralhome.com.

Mildred ‘Mel’ Young, 88, passed away at 10:45 p.m., Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at Christian Hospital Northeast, with her family by her side. Born on May 9, 1928, in Harrisburg, she was the daughter of Ralph and

Mel enjoyed knitting, crochet, quilting, reading and bingo, but mostly spending time with her children and grandchildren. On July 9, 1958, in Wood River, she married Owen Lee Young. He died November 9, 2008. Surviving are three sons, Earl Edward (Judy) Strain, III of Alton, Reginald Alan (Deborah) Strain of Anacoca, Louisiana, and Van Lee Young of Brighton; daughter, Earlene Leslie (Phil) Werkmeister of Benton; eight grandchildren; 15 great- grandchildren; two brothers, Wendell Flanders of Olney, Texas, and Leonard (Mary) Flanders of Wood River; and a sister, Maudine (Tim) Fornes of Herod, Illinois. Preceding in death were her parents; husband; a son, Steven Young; and a brother, Bruce Flanders. Visitation was from 11 a.m. until time of service at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 7, 2017 at Marks Mortuary in Wood River. Internment will be in Woodland Hill Cemetery.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, January 7, 2017, at the Werry Funeral Home in Poseyville, Indiana with burial in Poseyville Cemetery. Pastor Kirk Horstmeyer officiated. Visitation was from 11:30 a.m. until service time Saturday, January 7, 2017 at the funeral home.
