Breakfast in hotel Start your journey by visiting the town of Mafra and its impressive National Palace which construction started in 1717 in the reign of D. João V. This Baroque Palace when finished was enlarged to include 880 rooms and 330 cells for its monks. It also includes a small hospital, pharmacy, and a prize library. The beautiful town of Óbidos, about 100km (62mi) north of Lisbon is a gorgeous place surrounded by a fortress with a 12th century castle and 45 foot wall around high up on a hill. The Medieval architecture has been beautifully preserved and it looks quaint and romantic with its cobblestoned streets, whitewashed houses, bougainvillea and geraniums in windowsill pots. Whilst visiting the town try the famous Ginjinha liqueur made from infusing sour cherries with “Aguardente” (a Portuguese brandy), sugar and cinnamon. You typically drink it like a shot, with a piece of cherry in the bottom and in Óbidos they drink it from a shot glass made of chocolate. Caldas da Rainha a town founded by a Portuguese queen started as a spa town and today well known for its popular and often humorous ceramics in the shape of cabbage and other vegetables, fruit-like ware and colorful dinner sets, small or big ceramic figures which are supposed to be both erotic and funny due to the religious and humorous work of Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro, who portrayed the feelings of the average Portuguese laborer in creating a long-suffering and crosslooking ceramic figure in 1875, known as "Zé Povinho" Alcobaça is another town worth visiting if not for the incredibly old, graceful and light, Monastery easy to spot at the center of town. The cloister gardens house a fabulous collection of capitols and columns but the special treat is the kitchen. Admire the beautiful tombs of Inês and Pedro and read their tragic story.
