We Connect Our Students to the World!

Excellence in education is a differentiator for Colégio Visconde de Porto Seguro and has been fundamental in making our students’ dreams come true. Every year, our students are admitted to top universities around the world to pursue careers that directly engage with society and contemporary social and climate issues.

In this era of global connections and sustainability, our International School model looks to the future, designing a multidisciplinary learning journey in a practical way, with a focus on plural education, language immersion and multiculturalism.

At Porto, from Kindergarten onwards, our students experience a day-to-day immersion in multiple languages. In Elementary and Middle School, they learn the broad fundamental concepts of knowledge, which in High School lead them to a countless number of possibilities and careers.

We are a true community of different cultures, generations and knowledge, united by a commitment to quality education for all and for the world!

It was a musical spectacle that enchanted the audience with countless surprising moments.

Projects For an Evolving World

Every year, our students develop interdisciplinary projects. This learning process involves guidance, teamwork, different types of research, reflections and creative solutions. At the end of the project, students present proposals to their families that discuss topics of global relevance.

Kindergarten BILINGUAL CURRICULUM

Kindergarten 1:

Let’s Play the Sensing Game!

The project is dedicated to exploring sensory experiences, stimulating children’s senses and encouraging discovery through active exploration. Students experience a variety of learning plans that help them get to know themselves better and understand the world around them.

Kindergarten 2: What Can Be Told in a Song?

This project revives childhood songs and plays, celebrating a world that transcends generations. The aim is to cultivate a connection and appreciation of families’ experiences and life stories and to encourage the expansion of children’s oral and cultural repertoires.

Kindergarten 3: Good Old Plays

The project consists of a trail that allows people to rediscover traditional childhood games and expand their knowledge of other cultures. Furthermore, it promotes the exploration of environments, objects and natural elements, as well as the creation of toys.

Kindergarten 5: Thinking Outside the Box

This project aims to engage children in creative experiences that stimulate imagination and construction. It also includes challenges in the subjects of mathematics, reading, writing, languages and technology that expand the children’s knowledge in activities with reusable and unstructured objects. This not only promotes skill development but also makes playing moments more diverse.

Kindergarten 4: Which Emotions Fit Here?

This project promotes the development of children’s socio-emotional skills. Through stories, play and conversation, students are encouraged to explore, experience, understand and acknowledge a range of emotions and feelings. This helps them understand not only themselves but also others, and to respect and appreciate differences between people.

Elementary School

1st grade:Little Citizens in Action

What does it mean to be a citizen? Based on this question, students examine different perspectives on social issues, seeking to enrich their overall education and prepare themselves to be active and responsible citizens. In this way, through the Little Scientist’s House projects developed throughout the year, they explore some social challenges from different angles, gain a deeper understanding of the importance of their contribution to a better world, and recognise the role of science in this scenario.

2nd grade: I Have History

The purpose of this project is to build individual, collective and social identity through an interdisciplinary approach. Teachers, colleagues, family members and the community are invited to answer the following question: what is my story? Throughout the project, students practice global citizenship by investigating stories of children from different cultures around the world, as well as their own. This not only broadens their horizons, but also helps them to understand other children’s experiences, thereby broadening their perspective on global society.

3rd grade: New Looks at the World

The project emphasises the importance of mutual and environmental respect, valuing the uniqueness of each community in the search for peaceful and sustainable coexistence among all people. Furthermore, it promotes a feeling of belonging to a common humanity in which empathy, solidarity, respect for differences and diversity are shared values and responsibilities.

5th grade:Together, We Can Fix It – Actions to Fix the World

To explore Porto’s six competences, students are tasked with analysing some of the main environmental and social problems, reflecting on issues related to the sustainable development of our planet and proposing solutions that contribute to a better world. Interaction with experts and institutions from various countries, through masterclasses and videoconferences, is essential to amplify the themes addressed in the project.

4th grade: Rummaging Through the Memory Chest

The project proposes valuing the elderly and preserving memory as a means of reconstructing the past in connection with the present to strengthen cultural identity, a sense of belonging and an understanding of the world around us. In this initiative, the grandparents of the students, guests and experts in the field of ageing take part in interviews and videoconferences, encouraging interaction between the students and their elders. This exchange of experiences between generations plays an essential role in interpreting and valuing the histories of their grandparents.

Middle School

7th grade:Living With Differences

Students are encouraged to conduct research using scientific methodology, focusing on the theme of coexistence. This process broadens the students’ perspectives on different physical, emotional and environmental themes and contributes to the development of their socio-emotional skills.

6th grade:Sustainable ideas and interventions

Students address sustainability, encompassing the environmental, economic and political areas. Moreover, they recognise the importance of sustainability in interpersonal relations and in developing socio-emotional competences, which in turn enhance the learning process.

8th grade:Healthy Choices

Living well means making healthy food choices, cultivating good habits and building quality interpersonal relationships. From this viewpoint, students are encouraged to adopt a moderate lifestyle and make informed choices regarding nutrition, physical activity and socio-emotional development.

9th grade:Breaking Down Barriers and Building Bridges – Porto Talks

The project is guided by the Global Perspectives subject and focuses on the United Nations (UN) 2030 Agenda, which deals with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Students research and present in English their ideas and interventions towards a more equitable world.

High School

High School offers the opportunity to deepen knowledge in an elective manner, as well as the option to focus on English or German. By choosing an Education Advancement Pathway, students prepare a theme project that leads them to further studies and research in line with global perspectives, employing technological resources and developing entrepreneurship.

1st year:

Students can choose to deepen their studies in areas such as engineering and infrastructure, business school (responsible consumption and production), and health and well-being.

2nd year:

Kindergarten 5: Sustainability on the Planet

Students conduct research on the planet and the amount of waste produced and learn about the importance of water in the preservation of life. At the same time, teachers carry out a series of scientific experiments involving the actions of the Little Scientist’s House project.

Elementary School

1st grade:

What Can I Do to Make the World a Better Place?

The project aims to help students understand their personal and social routines, addressing fundamental themes such as kindness and responsibility.

2nd grade: I Have History

Children explore their personal histories through research and interviews with their family members. Throughout the year, students write their own narratives, reflecting on events in their lives. This comprehensive project includes several subjects, such as German, Sachkunde and Kunst, Portuguese Language, Music, Physical Education, History and Geography. The works are presented to family members during an in-person meeting.

3rd grade:Fables

By encouraging the creation of their own fables in Portuguese and German, students develop stories, act out fables, study animals in German and build the habitats of these animals in Art classes.

5th grade: The World and I

The project is driven by a commitment to social issues. To guide studies, significant events in the students’ personal and academic tracks are explored. All the research culminates in the production of a magazine presenting the work done individually and in groups.

4th grade:Arab Tales

The project takes a comprehensive approach to the Arab world and is integrated with other disciplines. Students explore literary styles, produce short stories, and work in groups to research different aspects of Arab culture, such as clothing, cuisine, religion, geography and traditions.

Middle School

During German Language Week, several projects were carried out with Middle School students.

In 8th grade, we started preparing for the DSD I (Deutsches Sprachdiplom) exam with the ‘Auf dem Weg zum DSD’ intermediate test. In 9th grade, all students are required to take the DSD I test.

Another highlight is the ‘Känguru-Wettbewerb’ (Kangaroo Competition) in Mathematics, an international competition held in German, in which many of our students achieve excellent results and are awarded prizes.

We also offer extracurricular courses such as drama and choir, which are very popular with students.

In 2024, as part of the Knowledge Expeditions, students visited Santos, Pinacoteca de São Paulo, Itu/Salto and the Immigration Museum in São Paulo.

After completing High School, students dedicate a further year to preparing for the writing and speaking tests for the International Abitur Certificate , which is widely recognised throughout the world for its high demands and academic excellence.

Under the supervision of the International Curriculum Principal’s Office, High School and Abitur students organised another edition of Porto Seguro Model United Nations (Posmun) , a diplomatic simulation in which students take on the role of diplomats from United Nations member states to debate and propose solutions to global problems or join the press team, responsible for covering the event and producing news in real-time.

On 3rd October, students participated in an event to celebrate German Unity Day , during which they were able to understand the importance of reunification for the history of Germany and establishing democracy. The programme included various activities such as lectures and sports.

Casting the Net of Knowledge - Global Connections

KINDERGARTEN

Every year, Porto welcomes specialists in various fields of knowledge to give classes, in person or online, that contribute to the individual and collective development of the students.

Porto’s campuses welcomed writer Silvana Rando, author of several children’s books. Silvana spoke to the Kindergarten 5 classes about her works and answered questions and curiosities from our children.

Contact with diverse cultures and sources of information promotes comprehensive learning, stimulates expressive discoveries and enhances the cognitive potential of children. In this context, we worked on the book E o dente ainda doía [And the Tooth Still Hurt], by Ana Terra, one of the works that make up the ‘Literary Curriculum’ programme for Kindergarten 5. The meeting was about oral health and was attended by Ana Elisa Amaro Rodrigues and Renata Botelho Guimarães Bruzza, mothers of Porto students.

Throughout the year, Kindergarten 4 children have experienced and reflected on civic practices aimed at protecting animals and valuing life. The Social and Environmental Responsibility Project helped raise awareness among children about the importance of collective work in caring for animals and preserving nature.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

CHILDREN’S BOOK WEEK

Every class in the Bilingual Curriculum, from Kindergarten to Elementary School, can delve into different stories during Children’s Book Week and enjoy unique reading and storytelling activities to spark the imagination of children. Established in the United States in 1919, Children’s Book Week is an annual celebration of children’s books that aims to encourage children to read.

Throughout the year, Kindergarten and Elementary School students in the Bilingual Curriculum participate in immersive experiences that aim to enhance the culture of English-speaking countries, enriching both the cultural and linguistic repertoire of the students. These experiences include Saint Patrick’s Day, Easter, Earth Day, S’mores Day, International Peace Day, Halloween, National Stop Bullying Day and Thanksgiving.

In the 2023 edition, held at the Swiss-Brazilian School in São Paulo, Ayla Busch Abatte won 1st place among International Curriculum 7th-grade students, while Giulia Guerreiro Ferrarese won 2nd place among Bilingual Curriculum 7th-grade students.

REGULATED DEBATE

The Regulated Debate project offers 8th-grade students the opportunity to develop their argumentation skills and the ability to articulate ideas clearly and surely. At the same time, they can also develop active listening and critical thinking skills.

HIGH SCHOOL

As our students enter high school, they begin to explore future careers and hone their skills and talents. To help them along the way, Porto held a series of lectures and masterclasses aimed at broadening the students’ knowledge on various topics.

RESCUE ROBOT

In the Maker Culture and Digital Design subjects, the students develop the Rescue Robot project, which simulates a rescue operation performed by a robot in a radioactive area. To simulate the robot, the students use the LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education EV3, a programmable microcomputer capable of controlling motors and sensors.

Students must develop an implement that will be attached to the EV3 to move people out of the hazardous zone. They must also program the route that the robot must follow to save the greatest number of people within less than 100 seconds, as radioactivity limits the lifespan of the robot, which is destroyed after one minute.

In High School, the Maker Culture and Digital Design subject is taught in English.

Porto Opens Its Doors to the World

International School

In 2022, the German government accredited Colégio Visconde de Porto Seguro as an International School with International and Bilingual curricula.

The Bilingual Curriculum presents an intensification of German and English class hours, promoting fluency in these two languages while maintaining their Brazilian cultural identity with lessons in Portuguese. This core curriculum assures the learning objectives of the Brazilian Common Curriculum Framework. Still, it goes much further by establishing contact with the aforementioned world cultures through experiences in diverse curricular components, from Kindergarten to High School.

The International Curriculum includes immersion in the German language with native teachers, from Kindergarten to High School and Abitur, valuing the pluralism of ideas and cultures of the two countries and issuing a double certification at the end of the course: Brazilian and German. Its core curriculum complies with Brazilian educational legislation, with classes in Portuguese, as well as German legislation, according to the education program of the state of Baden-Württemberg. English classes are also included in this programme.
