Dennis Jones & Associates New Title Releases January 2017

Page 1

January 2017 I am reminded at this time of year of the precarious nature of small press publishing and single book publishers. Whilst there are conferences to do with small presses none of it can address the power of the bookseller in determining when enough is enough and deny the emergence of new works that happen to be published late in the year's cycle of publishing. As an aggregator for maybe 800 publishers we started the path to key title identification just after Christmas last year and through the year allowed new titles to be dropped into the program as we progress and as they are created. Problem is there are so many books available for the limited shelf space of the outlets, as well as the limited interest the marquee review columns allow for “locally” published works by small press and single book publishers. The internet then allows consumers to be made aware of ever increasing levels of new content information. So do you give up? Do I say to our publishers that the traditional Book Trade does not like new releases outside of the major houses at this time of year? It is tempting but not really a solution to the inevitable that creators are sometimes disruptors.(We all travel by Uber and accept that change – don’t we?) What the disruptor leads to is higher than normal migration to online purchasing – good for our bottom line, but maybe not so good for the traditional trade in the long term? I always have concern at the breadth of our sales via online vendors and with their unlimited databases and the simplicity of the "feed" they will continue to grow as it is relatively simple for them to pick up the daily feed and start selling – with images. We had a great October largely due to the media surrounding Food as Medicine, The Art of Frugal Hedonism, Sweet Greek Life, etc. Our authors are so hard working at launches, readings and savvy PR; I still get quite surprised at seeing the aggregate of our media through the publishers and authors when we release our “promulgation” newsletter and our new title release newsletter - thank you. Key work objectives for the next few weeks are to force the small press publishers and single book publishers who have worthy works to enter for next season's awards lists. I have to

Words From The Wise now go back over the last twelve months to pick the best and then advocate entry to respective awards – where the entry criteria allows. Thanks to Dave Pankhurst from the Book Connection in Dubbo for his newsletter - the ones about those mandated ones in Canberra - good reading. Also to Maree Coote who in the one weekend scored a mammoth review for Spellbound in Publishers Weekly, USA "an eye-catching collection" and the short listing of Alphabet City Zoo for the NAMI CONCOURS ILLUSTRATION AWARDS “This is a great thrill for the small independent publisher, Melbournestyle Books; In a field of 1777 entries from 89 nations, Alphabet City Zoo made a shortlist of 150 finalists - and only two of these from Australia.” In this catalogue of new releases the stand out looks to be Coast - Tasmania from Fullers Publishing. How lucky to have such a beautiful book to adorn the cover of the new releases; and the size! Clive Tilsley the publisher describes it; “big at 300x300mm coffee table size, 312pp and weighs in at over 3 kg. It is quite spectacular.” The beauty or privilege is that we will sell this globally. I also wanted to let you know I signed the Steve Potash led petition about the proposed merger between the International Digital Publishing Forum IDPF and the World Wide Web ConsortiumW3C merger. I have been lucky to have attended the IDPF conference for the last four years and have relished its educational ambit of both standards and opportunity. Strangely looking back on my notes from the 2013 conference I had made a note to follow up on who is the W3C; I also heard Sir Tim Berners-Lee this year at the IDPF conference. You can learn more about the proposed merger at http:// www.futureofebooks.info/ Finally we are still investigating a change to our freight contractor and if we can make financial sense of it we will move in the new year. We have redesigned the back warehouse to allow for the change. We now have to work out the cost efficacy of the change without interfering with our trading terms. I guess we are caught in a Catch 22 situation on this. Good reading and good selling DJ

Coast ‐ Tasmania

Andrew Wilson has an eye for the dramatic and this is a very fresh pictorial portrait of Tasmania. There are extreme wilderness spots reached only by sea and some others of inhabited and favorite recreational areas, but all of them show the beauty and the extremes brought about by being in the path of the roaring forties.

RC Sports (WA) Pty Ltd

Doctor, hockey world champion, Member of Parliament, state cricketer, winning coach, bestselling author…the list of this remarkable man’s achievements are little short of astonishing. In his latest literary offering, World’s Best, Ric Charlesworth gives us a clear understanding of what makes players and teams – not just hockey teams – exceptional. It is this quest for ‘exceptionality’ that Charlesworth meticulously and unflinchingly deconstructs, creating a picture where every piece of the jigsaw – whether it’s tactics, determination, team culture or simply brilliant skills – plays its role in creating a masterpiece. Drawing on impossibly rich experiences in the sporting field, Charlesworth transports the reader on a fascinating and at times heartbreaking journey of success and failure. From the disappointment of the Kookaburras 2012 London Olympics campaign to the soaring elation of winning the World Cup in The Hague two years later through to the sustained brilliance of the Hockeyroos, World’s Best masterfully plots hockey’s evolution in eloquent detail. Charlesworth’s record is unsurpassed by any other coach or team in the history of the sport, a giant of sporting achievement, success and innovation. As with everything this favourite son of WA has done he has given us yet another piece of brilliance – a truly exceptional Australian.

Set in the years 1896‐1914, this book begins in the Coffee Palace in Berrigan, NSW, which opened in time for the arrival of the railway in that town. Within the story of the family that built the Berrigan Coffee Palace, various stories emerge ‐ of the family in Tasmania, and its musicians who have become part of the cultural scene for Australian rural towns; of a shipwreck of the ‘Helen’ in the Cork harbour; of Chartist men and a clockmaker in England; and through it all, a snapshot of daily life in the Riverina town in the years leading to Federation .

Martin and his father poured water from both hoses to flood the room in the Small Cottage, where inside a grotesque blackened figure had just collapsed to the floor amongst the flames. Headlights were coming up the drive. A truck raced up the side road past the Big Cottage. More headlights appeared, more trucks arrived. Voices shouted. Directions were given. Men were running. Water pumps began spluttering into life, their noisy motors shattering the peace of the countryside as hundreds of gallons of water began bombarding the cottage on all sides. This novel depicts the lives of three generations of the Nelson family. Pa, the patriarch of the family and his wife Sophie living in the main homestead and their son James with his wife Louise and their three children, Martin, Clara and Tania in the Big Cottage. Together they face years of drought, of wool recession. Louise starts up a Craft Cottage Industry to involve many farmer’s wives around the township. But the farm slowly slips into the red, and the family are forced to adapt. A rural tourism industry develops and produces untold benefits for the family. Join the Nelsons as they cope with tragedy and distress as well as finding eventual contentment.

In Australia, the elements dominate our senses. Fire, Earth, Wind, and Water – they bring awe, silence, fear, contemplation, beauty, all at once. Australia Elements presents the creation and identity of today’s Australia through its maps, histories and myths. “Australia, an island like no other,” the book begins. Its mystery lies in its extremes, vastness, and isolation. Caroline Bouquet, author of Mapping Sydney, continues to delight. Her sensitive text and exquisite drawings embrace the powers of nature, and the expanses of time and space.

Very few Australians today know of the fierce air battles fought across the Top End of Australia in World War II. For more than two years Japanese aircraft crossed the coast and bombed relentlessly. Savage dogfights were fought between the legendary Zero fighter and Allied Kittyhawks and Spitfires. Big twin-engine Betty bombers rained down blast and fire upon airfields and towns, even penetrating as far inland as Katherine, some 300 kilometres from the coast. Nearly 200 Japanese aircrew died in the onslaught. This book lists all of their names and describes all of the combat missions – and reveals for the first time that the number of combat flights, aircraft shot down, and aircrew who died is far higher than previously thought. Scores of aircraft were downed in combat operations ranging from Exmouth to Townsville, with the majority of action taking place in the Northern Territory. This new extensive research shows the number of air raids was higher than the previously suggested figure of 64, with 77 raids on the Territory alone, while 208 enemy combat flights were carried out across Northern Australia. 186 Japanese airmen died when their aircraft were brought down. In many cases their bodies lie in remote sites across the vast bush and coastal waters of the north. Many of the wrecks have never been found. The Empire Strikes South describes all of the aircraft used, and gives an insight into the world of fighter pilots and aircrew. With a full range of new colour graphics by renowned illustrator Michael Claringbould, this significant new research reveals a battle for Australia that has been previously unknown.

No-one will ever know what made him do it. Teddy Sheean was part of the evacuation of his warship, the corvette Armidale sinking fast while around it swarmed Japanese aircraft, shooting with abandon. Teddy turned back to his gun, an Oerlikon 20mm anti-aircraft cannon with a broad leather strap to secure the gunner. He began firing...a courageous Tasmanian was determined to do his best to save his mates and his ship. No member of the Royal Australian Navy has ever been awarded a Victoria Cross. Of the 100 so far given to Australians, 96 are to the Army and four to the Royal Australian Air Force. It was not from lack of bravery that this unjust situation has arisen. It derives from substantial unfairness. In World War I and II, the RAN had to apply through Britain's class-bound Royal Navy for any such award to be made. This book focuses on a naval sailor who should have received a VC. Honour Denied - Teddy Sheean, a Tasmanian Hero, also: - Reveals the secret engagement Teddy Sheean kept concealed from his family - Lists for the first time the full list of Dutch soldiers who died when HMAS Armidale was sunk in 1942 - Compares the bravery of Sheean to two other Australian naval heroes – who should also have been decorated with the Victoria Cross - Reveals the reverse of what other writers have suggested: the Royal Australian Navy was proud of Armidale and her fight, and did not cover up her loss Author Information Dr Tom Lewis OAM is Darwin-based military historian. He is a former naval officer and the award-winning author of 14 military history books.

Seafood Everyday is a full colour cookbook of 80 original recipes by Tasmanian chef, stylist and photographer Eloise Emmett. With over 20 years of experience cooking in restaurants and kitchens around Tasmania, qualified chef Eloise has developed, photographed and styled each recipe to perfection. Seafood Everyday contains recipes for weeknight family meals as well as special celebration dishes – with everything in between. Eloise is the former chef‐proprietor of her renowned Mussel Boys restaurant on the Tasman Peninsula. Eloise says, “former guests of the restaurant will be very pleased to hear that a few of my most popular secret recipes from the restaurant are now published in Seafood Everyday!”. Scenic photographs of the spectacular Tasman Peninsula area are scattered throughout the book, and Eloise counts the cover photograph of sunrise at the Tessellated Pavement at Eaglehawk Neck as one of her triumphs. “I tried to get this picture on three different occasions, and finally the conditions were just perfect and could get the picture that I had been imagining!” said Eloise. This photograph was picked up on social media by Tourism Tasmania, Tourism Australia and local tourism associations, receiving over 80 000 ‘likes’ on social media channels. Available Now Approaching Cooke’s Opera, my nomadic antennae twitch with the pleasures of ‘a double shudder’: the recognition of an elegantly contemporary music, and the discovery of a different, southerly meridian. The play with ordered forms is wonderfully defeated, exceeded, flooded by an enriched, vibrating language that is always many. The thought it proposes is a ‘linguistic procreat’ of major dimensions.‐ Pierre Joris Original, arresting, fresh in both language and approach, Opera uses all the dimensions of poetry to evoke the immediacy of place. Geologies, floras, faunas and human cognition are entwined into local singularities, which Cooke privileges as the shaping force of a new poetry. ‐ Peter Boyle The bones of language transmogrify in Cooke’s luminous and sensual, sublime and elemental landscape. His glyphic libretto—estuarine, alluvial, fluvial—drifts across a cardio‐lingual topography. This macro‐lensed poetry, this extraordinary Opera, is all beauty. ‐ Meredith Wattison

Author Information Stuart was born in Sydney in 1980, and grew up there and in Hobart. He travels often, particularly in Latin America, where he has lived for a number of years. He now lives on the Gold Coast and lectures at Griffith University. Widely published as a poet, critic and translator, Opera is his second book of poems.

Available Now Greece had changed me ... now I had a greater sense of what was possible, what potential the world offered to those willing to plunge in ... the future beginning to issue its demand. Time to move, to a new place and a new challenge. I had no idea what it might be, or where I might find it, but we thought, Jo and I, that England would be as good a place to start as any ... In 'Time of Arrival' Garry Kinnane tells of a decade of living abroad ‐ Greece, a war‐affected Europe, London in the 60s and 70s, his involvement in the student movement, a scholarship to Oxford. His search for direction is aided by friends and the faith of his wife Jo, through the struggle to raise a family in times of hardship, and the ultimate desire to return home to Australia. It is a tale of journey and arrival ‐ at a place, an achievement, a self‐discovery. This is the final volume of a trilogy that began with childhood in 'Shadowed Days', and continued with youth in 'Fare Thee Well, Hoddle Grid'.

Author Information Garry Kinnane is the author of 'George Johnston: A Biography' (winner of The Age Book‐of‐the‐year 1986) and 'Colin Colahan: A Portrait'. His memoir 'Shadowed Days' was shortlisted for the 2009 Queensland Premier's Literary Awards for non‐fiction.

A host of Australia’s best genre fictioneers – and one bold Kiwi – were invited to submit stories to the first anthology of adventure stories commissioned by Clan Destine Press. The authors could write in any genre but there a couple of must‐haves: the stories had to feature ‘a dynamic duo’ and include something Australian (or Kiwi). Thirty‐two authors did exactly what we asked of them, in terms of page‐turning yarns; and many also took advantage of the offer to write from 5000 to 15,000 words. And Then... The Great Big Book of Awesome Adventure Tales is the result. Or, to be precise, the three‐volume And Then… is the result – and is now available. The three Great Big Books of Awesome Adventure Tales feature historical, futuristic and contemporary settings, and the adventures are real‐world, far‐out, sf, horror, fantasy and mystery. The Authors Sulari Gentill, Jason Nahrung, Mary Borsellino, Andrew Nette, Cameron Ashley, Alan Baxter, Fin J Ross, Jason Franks, Emilie Collyer and Lindy Cameron Good old‐fashioned rip‐snorting action adventures of the What If… What Next… and – most importantly – And Then… kind.

Available Now The book contains very detailed information on the common symptoms of not only prostate cancer but other less critical diseases of the uro‐genital system. A comprehensive questionnaire will help men or their wives or partners pick up any changes that could be early warning signs. It goes on to explain in great detail the steps that should be taken if a problem is suspected and the steps the medical professional will take to determine and treat the cause. When asked to read and evaluate the book, Peter Dornan, founder and convenor of the Prostate Cancer Support Group wrote, 'When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1996, at the age of 52, as a health professional, a Physiotherapist, I was embarrassed and angry that I did not know what my prostate was, where it was and what it did. This is the book I would have loved to have at the time. Every question regarding anatomy, disease processes, decision making procedures for the treatment and considerations of the side effects, psycho‐social effects and the impact on relationships, are concisely covered – all in layman terms. The most important section, dealing with the modern research of parametric MRI during diagnosis, is particularly useful.'

Author Information Dr Judith O'Malley‐Ford is a full time General Practitioner, award winning, internationally published author in Australia and in the UK, former Editor of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia monthly magazine, and Committee member of the Asthma Foundation. She has a Master of Public Health and is a Fellow and Examiner of the Royal Australian College of the General Practitioners. She is an author of published fiction and nonfiction.

In this book of poems and meditations, Paul Kraus brings together the best modern teaching on healing, albeit from a predominantly Christian viewpoint, even though he is a Holocaust survivor of Jewish origin. He tells the amazing story of his journey through cancer to a richer life. He coped with the most devastating diagnoses by opening his life to deep prayer. Each illness was a time of transformation of body and soul, firstly through meditation which brought a healing light to shine in and around him and then through the positive emotions which stilled his worried mind. As a result he continues to grow in faith in the Divine Healer whose power came directly into his being and was also dispensed by the ministry of gifted health professionals. He writes about doctors who can blend scientific skills with the mystery of the human person, about inspiring ‘sufferers’, about the strength given by family and friends, about the therapy of love, music and laughter – but most specifically he speaks of poetry.

Author Information Paul Kraus is a Holocaust survivor and mesothelioma patient (living in Newcastle). Kraus was born in and survived a Nazi forced labour camp during World War II. In 1997, he was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a type of cancer caused by asbestos. He published another religious poetry book, Prayers, Promises and Prescriptions for Healing in England a few years ago, which sold well in England and Australia. He is also the author of Not So Fabulous 50s: Images of a Migrant Childhood and Surviving Mesothelioma and Other Cancers: A patient’s guide.

Guards stay at their posts, and die to defend their cities… Southerner Sergeant Kearney “Red” Redguard is the last of a disgraced family, and a loyal guardsman. And with a murderer stalking the streets, the city guard is his city’s best defense. But in the North, King Caedmon Taranisäii is gathering his army, and the cruel Night God prepares for the downfall of the South. A new dark griffin roams the land, warning of the war to come. Betrayed and sent on the run, Red must fight to save his homeland. But it may already be too late… Praise for K.J. Taylor's works: "...intelligent high‐stakes fantasy..." ‐ Bookseller and Publisher "...ever since The Dark Griffin came out in 2009, this has been my favourite fantasy series. It's got more imagination than Lord of the Rings, more intrigue than Game of Thrones, and a better sense of humour than Harry Potter. It's brought tears to my eyes, it's made me laugh out loud.. My stock standard birthday gift for anyone remotely interested in fantasy." ‐ author Jack Heath

Author Information K.J. Taylor published her first work, The Land of Bad Fantasy, through Scholastic when she was just 18, and went on to publish The Dark Griffin in Australia and New Zealand five years later. The Griffin’s Flight and The Griffin’s War followed in the same year, and were released in America and Canada in 2011. The Shadow’s Heir, The Shadowed Throne and The Shadow’s Heart have now joined them in both Australia and the US. Her achievements so far include being named Young Distinguished Alumni of the Year from the University of Canberra in 2011, winning the Critic’s Award that same year, and being shortlisted for the Aurealis Awards in 2009 for The Dark Griffin.

Based on a true Australian war story only now being brought to life by author Justin Sheedy's vivid historical fictions, "Ghosts of the Empire" is also a story of young people living life to the full while they can ‐ in a blacked‐out world where dance partners, sex and death flow in equal abundance.

At the beginning of World War II, Britain was in the deepest trouble imaginable. 5 minutes flying time away crouched a monster. Alone against it, Britain called out to her Empire. For pilots. From all corners of that Empire, they volunteered. Only the best & brightest were chosen. Australian Daniel Quinn was one of these young men who came to fly against the monster. They had a 1‐in‐3 chance of survival. "Nor the Years Condemn" is based on the true story of the young Australians who flew Spitfires against the all‐conquering might of Nazi Germany. In their late teens and early‐20s, for the job at hand they had to be the 'shining ones', rendering the death of so many of them doubly heart‐rending for the reader.

To abandoned child, Colin Stone, World War Two grants an escape from the mean streets of St. Kilda. A natural warrior, his talents qualify him to join an elite group of young men. The shining ones. Who fly Spitfires against Nazi tyranny. Rising with them, from the top Colin Stone looks down on a world that has doomed his first true friends. Bringing to vivid life true Australian war history and events, "No Greater Love" is a saga in the classic mold, featuring the drama, beauty, heroism and horror of one young man's war journey through stunning Malta, Egypt and North Africa, Sicily, England and Europe. It is a portrait of the once‐in‐a‐lifetime characters the war places on his path, of the tragic, wholesale waste of war, on occasion even the profound humanity of his enemy, and of his evolving perception of his world for what it is.

SPELLBOUND by Maree Coote (MELBOURNESTYLE BOOKS, 9780992491727) is positively reviewed in the October 31, 2016 issue of PUBLISHERS WEEKLY, USA (circ. 16,554). In an eye-catching collection of "letter art," Australian graphic designer Coote reveals how letters can be used not as the building blocks of language but of artwork. A section titled "Architext " features typographic recreations of famous buildings from around the world -- swoopy capital Rs and Ds form the distinctive shells of the Sydney Opera House, for example, with rolling S waves below -- while the second and third sections, "Alphabeasts" and "Letterheads", show how letters can be transformed into portraits of animals and people. Throughout, Coote encourages readers to try their own hand at making letter art, offering pointers, different skill levels and challenges, and information about typography itself. Readers will finish the book both awed and eager to embark on their own typographical experiments. Ages 7-up. Publishers Weekly, USA Alphabet City Zoo (Firm Sale)

A Darker Magic This Way Comes is the first tale in Merlin's Secrets, a series of five books. It is an epic and fast‐paced story of love and war, knights and wizardry, angels and goddesses and the cosmic clash between Darkness and Light. It re‐imagines the Arthurian legend, as narrated by Merlin. But who is this Merlin? Set in the turbulent and brutal times of the fifth and sixth century, Merlin also writes of his love for a fairy from the Otherworld, Emily Charlotte Hughes, a high school student from twenty first century Exeter in Devon. Throughout the hundred years of the Merlin's Secrets series, Emily and Merlin swap the narrator role to give the reader both contemporary and historical insights into the characters and the story. But the young lovers will be separated by their complex destinies and will only have a short amount of time together. The characters are engaging; Emily lives the life of a modern intelligent sixteen year old, yet she falls in love with someone who has a squillion hits on Google, and whom she knows has been dead for fifteen hundred years. Merlin, like an ancient prophet, meditates in caves where he has been known to talk with archangels. He has the ability to become entangled with evil and not be tarnished by it. In A Darker Magic This Way Comes, the young lovers engage with Moloch, the Prince of Lies, and Morgana, a sorceress of immense power, when Emily, whom they call the Chosen One, is abducted. She has to find the answer to why she is "chosen" in this exhilarating mix of adventure, myth, and magic where nothing is as it first seems.

Author Information Carmel Niland, a successful senior bureaucrat in NSW, was for over thirty years an outspoken civil servant involved in leading agencies on women, racial equality, human rights, disability services and child protection. Surprisingly, parallel to her life in the public sector was an inner world deeply rooted within English history and within that her particular interest in the great Arthurian legends. Carmel lives in Sydney, this is her first novel.

This story chronicles a largely unknown but important aspect of 20th century Australian political history during the Cold War, when the Communist leadership closed down many Jewish organisations and declared Zionism an ideological enemy. Soviet Jews often suffered hardships, not being allowed to enlist in universities, work in certain professions or participate in government. For three critical decades, 1959‐89, Australian Jews and their community leaders were deeply involved in the international Soviet Jewry movement, with distinctive contribution to international affairs by some leading Australians including Bob Hawke, Garfield Barwick and Malcolm Fraser. By any measure, Australia played a role above and beyond what might be expected from a middle‐ranking nation with limited international influence. But the lead actor was Isi Leibler, and this is very much also his story. Widely recognised and honoured internationally, his involvement and leadership ‐ his 'magnificent obsession' ‐ with the refuseniks and Soviet Jews, merit a full account. The emigration of over a million Jews to Israel, after an international campaign lasting more than three decades, redefined the notion of human rights. Indeed, Natan Sharansky, the leading 'Prisoner of Zion', claims it as the 20th century's most successful human rights movement.

The Ladder is Simon West's third collection of poetry, and his first in four years. Many earlier preoccupations return‐ the natural environment, Italian art, the dimensions of place. There is a new focus on worldly and artistic responsibility, and finding that 'certain poise' of 'being in between'. At the collection's heart are the building blocks of language, along with the more literal ones of Rome, where some of these poems were written during a residency at the Whiting studio in 2012.

Author Information Simon West lives in Melbourne. He is the author of First Names (Puncher & Wattmann 2006), shortlisted for the NSW Premiers’ Prize and winner of the William Baylebridge Memorial Prize; The Selected Poetry of Guido Cavalcanti (Troubador Publishing, 2009); and The Yellow Gum’s Conversion (Puncher & Wattmann 2011), shortlisted for the Queensland Literary Awards. Carmel Bird wins 2016 Patrick White Literary Award The annual award was established by Patrick White using the proceeds of his 1973 Nobel Prize for Literature, and is traditionally awarded to authors who ‘have made a significant but inadequately recognised contribution to Australian literature’. The award does not involve a submission process, with writers being ‘automatically eligible’. Judging panel chair Bernadette Brennan said Bird had ‘contributed widely and uniquely to Australian literature since her first book in 1976’. ‘Carmel has since gone on to publish thirty more books—her imagination is extraordinarily wide-ranging and her fiction consequently creates a world that criss-crosses textual, intellectual and geographical boundaries,’ said Brennan.

This book about writing and the imagination is essential reading for any writer, emerging or experienced. Re‐released with new material and updated advice for the 21st writer. 'I first read Dear Writer as a nervy, secretive scribbler‐in‐journals 20 years ago. Reading this revised version I'm struck again by its practical generosity on technical matters ‐ but am also inspired by the deeper, more complex conversations I think I missed in those early readings: about courage, about the urgency and mystery and self‐discovery of the writing process. Dear Writer Revisited may masquerade ‐ convincingly ‐ as a book for beginners, but its lessons are mature and wise.' ‐Charlotte Wood, The Writer's Room Interviews Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

This is an updated editon with additional information on some of the nurses supplied by their relatives after they read the first edition. Australian Heroines of World War One is the story of eight courageous women through diaries, letters, original photos, paintings and maps. These eight women had the courage and strength for which the Anzacs are renowned and the compassion and tenderness that only a woman can bring. One brave nursing sister Hilda Samsing became a whistleblower. Nursing aboard the hospital ship Gascon, outraged by the bungled evacuation of wounded Anzacs which was censored out of the press she let her diary be shown in high places which raised questions in the House of Commons. In Belgium, Louise Creed, a Sydney journalist caught in the besieged city of Antwerp made a hair‐raising escape from a German firing squad and lived to tell the tale. Brisbane's Grace Wilson, ordered to establish an emergency hospital on drought ridden Lemnos Island, arrived there to find suffering Anzacs but no drinking water, tents or medical supplies. Grace and her nurses tore up their petticoats to use as bandages, survived for weeks on bully beef and biscuits and saved the lives of thousands wounded at Lone Pine and the Nek. In November 1915 after a blizzard hit the trenches of

Since first publishing Elizabeth Woolcock's tragic story ‐ No Monument of Stone ‐ extensive additional research by the author has uncovered much more evidence than was available at the time of his initial writing. This later book ‐ Dead Woman Walking ‐ now contains that information. Information that perhaps one day may instigate an official investigation into the case and consequently lead to a posthumous pardon being granted for Elizabeth, for being denied access to fair and impartial justice at her trial in 1873, and thereby being unjustly convicted and executed for a murder she did not commit.

They say roses are red ... but I’ve seen different. A sweet and playful story about looking at life from a different perspective. Author Information Scott Rheuben was born in Sydney, grew up in Lismore and then studied health services management and human resources in Brisbane. He has worked in pubs in London, backpacked with a suitcase around Europe, travelled in a van around Australia with his wife, and is now re-settled on the far north coast with his wife, young son and two dogs. After more than thirty jobs before the age of forty, Scott has finally discovered his place and can truly pursue his passion. Though his writing has been cultivated behind the scenes for years with poetic verse and a fantasy-adventure novel, he has now found his niche in children’s books with Roses are NOT Red. ‘Your potential is exponential but inconsequential, if you just sit still.’ Find out more at www.scotter.com.au About the Illustrator Joanna Cuskelly was born and raised in Hampshire, England. About #CookForSyria ... ●Curated by award winning Instagram star ClerkenwellBoy (Winner "Best Instagram Feed for Food Lovers") and Serena Guen (founder of Suitcase Magazine and Unicef UK’s ambassador for Next Generation London) ●The pair originally came up with the idea to curate one charity dinner, for one night with one chef in aid of Unicef UK's humanitarian work helping children and refugees affected by the crisis in Syria. ●This quickly became a large scale charity banquet with six headline chefs which sold out within in days. ●Leveraging the power of social media, top chefs, cookbook authors and families with links to Syria were encouraged to get involved by sharing their favourite recipes online with a #CookForSyria inspired twist - so that anyone could host their own charity supper club at home, bake sale or just learn about the amazing cuisine and culture of Syria. ●As recipes flooded in, it made sense to share these beyond social media and in the form of a beautiful not for profit recipe book.
