WHY EDUCATION

TODD KUCKKAHN, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR                                     I remember traveling to my studentteaching assignment at Madison Memorial High School. I grew up in the then small town of Verona so practicing my craft at an enormous school like Memorial made me a bit more apprehensive. To make matters worse, Pink Floyd’s song, “We Don’t Need No Education”, was blasting on my radio. Every fall that scene comes back into my mind as the school year gets rolling. The Portage County Business Council (PCBC) recently honored outstanding educators in our school districts through our annual Golden Apple Awards. We are blessed in our community to have such quality instructors. In the audience were teachers ranging from brand new to those with over fifteen years of experience. We also had businesses, school board members, administrators, higher education representatives and many other groups represented. Our education system is critical to all that is great about Portage County. Part of the role of PCBC is to connect education with business and government and we do it with pride. Right out of the chute this fall, we will

be working with a regional effort to educate our eighth grade students regarding all of the benefits in the manufacturing field. When parents and people my age remember what manufacturing was like when we were growing up, it is much different than what takes place now. Many manufacturing floor rooms are spotless. The Heavy Metal Tour on October 3 will open students’ eyes to all of the exciting changes in the industry. Under the leadership of the North Central Wisconsin Workforce Development Board and in partnership with MidState Technical College (and other northern technical colleges), the Heavy Metal Tour will take students to a few area manufacturing businesses and include a briefing from Mid-State Technical College. PCBC is part of the planning team that makes this happen throughout north central Wisconsin. During the school year, PCBC will be bringing volunteers from the business community into classrooms to work with students through a variety of programs. They range from simple in-class presentations by people from the business community to reality

workshops where students have to work within a limited budget and a specific career, better known as our reality workshops. PCBC offers Inspire which is an online engagement tool for 6th-12th students to do career exploration. Businesses enter their information into Inspire and students can communicate and connect with local businesses (and eventually businesses in the whole state) through the portal. They can learn more practical information about their specific interests within a business setting, find out what jobs are available, set up a tour of a business, inquire about internships or connect with an employee, to name a few. Parents can also interact with their son and daughter through the student profile. With careers and life changing at a rapid pace, it is important to stay on top of opportunities and changes in the job world. Business leaders also volunteer to partner with students through mock interviews. Students will do in-class work before and after the actual interviews. The business leaders conduct one-on-one interviews and then discuss with the students the questions and answers. It is great to see the young men and women dressed for the part. Their nervousness is palpable and the benefits are tremendous. The beginning of the school year is a fresh start for so many. Access to resources continues to improve in our community. Take full advantage of them. And be careful what you listen to on the radio!

Mid-State celebrates first graduates of summer Metal Mania

NEWSROOM

Mid-State celebrated the achievements of its first summer Metal Mania graduates on the College’s Wisconsin Rapids campus on Wednesday, August 8. The new eightweek program allowed those interested in a career as a machinist to take courses in machine tool, print reading and solid modeling and receive eight transferable college credits. A number of local businesses financially sponsored students through the program, including Hastreiter Industries, Marten Machining, Pointe Precision, and Steel King. Funding and support from the Central Wisconsin Metal Manufacturers Alliance (CWIMMA) were also critical to the success of the program. “Metal Mania is helping students discover a passion for the highdemand machine tool field, and we are pleased to have such enthusiastic partners to help us deliver it,” said Bobbi Damrow, MidState’s vice president of workforce development and community relations. “It is a rewarding and challenging field that offers a wellpaying career in our local area.” Eight high school students and one adult participated and completed the program this summer, with most now signaling their intention to enroll in the Machine Tool Technician program at Mid-State. This is good news to Mid-State and its partnering sponsors of the innovative workforce project designed to get the word out about the high demand for skilled machine tool technicians in central Wisconsin. One Metal Mania graduate, Olivia Helminiak, learned of the program from Alan Marten, president of Marten Machining, where she is a student worker in the quality department. Helminiak had originally planned to study engineering at a four-year college after completing her upcoming senior year at Stevens Point Area High School (SPASH). “Metal Mania changed my mind,” she said. “I liked the hands-on learning in the shop so much that I’ve decided to get my degree in machine tool first.” Approximately 1,300 machinists are still needed in central Wisconsin in the next year, according to Derek Heikkinen, business services director at North Central Wisconsin Workforce Development Board and CWIMMA representative. “We are always working on new approaches like this grassroots feeder program to help fill the pipeline,” Heikkinen said. “We’re excited to see it succeed and look forward to offering it again next year along with a level 2 program for those who are looking to advance their skills.” To learn more about Mid-State’s programs and services, please call 888-575-6782 or visit the College’s website at www.mstc.edu.

A business with a mission. That was the inspiration behind Milkweed Market, which has sold handcrafted home décor and other home goods, do-it-yourself crafts and unique gifts since 2016. The business is a social enterprise created by Opportunity Development Centers (ODC), a non-profit organization whose mission is to empower people with disabilities to achieve their work the life goals. People at all levels of ability are involved in the creation of Milkweed Market products, and all proceeds support ODC’s mission.

Previously, Milkweed Market products were only available on the Etsy website, at craft events, and in small displays at a few retailers in the Central Wisconsin area. But on Tuesday, August 28, Milkweed Market will open its retail store doors to the public. The shop, located within ODC’s Wisconsin Rapids office at 1191 Huntington Avenue, will hosted a grand opening celebration from August 28 through August 30. This three-day event will featured refreshments, and customers will be treated to a coupon with purchase on August 28, a free gift on August 29 and a free entry ticket for a raffle prize drawing on August 30. “As an organization that provides services for people with disabilities, Milkweed Market serves two purposes,” said Pam Ross, ODC President. “It provides training and employment opportunities

for the individuals we serve, and equally importantly, provides operating revenue that supports our services.” On August 2, Milkweed Market also launched a new website featuring a wide variety of the products that will be available at the store. The website, at www.themilkweedmarket.com, offers customers the option to purchase custom names and words in either finished or unfinished styles. “This is a business venture that was 100% created by ODC staff, using their ingenuity and their desire to see something good happening for ODC,” said Ross. “They set out to try some things with equipment that we were using for other purposes, and quickly realized that we could create this fantastic array of home décor products.” According to Ross, Milkweed Market offerings have been extremely popular with customers from Central Wisconsin and outside the region, even without exposure from a storefront or website. With the addition of these new retail channels, the company is poised to grow and expand its product line.

Heather Smith has recently been named Employee Benefits Account Manager for Compass Insurance Services working in their Kronenwetter, WI location. Heather grew up in Boise, Idaho and is a US Army Veteran. Prior to joining Compass Insurance, Heather has spent the past 20 years working in the health insurance field. Heather enjoys the outdoors, camping, traveling, riding motorcycles, and exploring Wisconsin. Compass Insurance Services is a full service independent agency with offices in Kronenwetter, Wausau and Stevens Point. Compass Insurance Services provides Business Insurance, Personal Insurance, Employee Benefits, Life and Health for families and businesses in the Central Wisconsin area.

“Our communities have always supported ODC’s social mission,” said Ross. “Purchasing from Milkweed Market is just another way to ensure that we can continue to serve people with disabilities in our communities.” 9

New teachers from our County’s districts were invited to attend, along with business representatives and district administrators. Complimentary food and beverages from UWSP’s On Point Catering were enjoyed by all.

The Golden Apple Awards program recognized the importance of education, and PCBC feels fortunate to have such amazing educators in our community to celebrate with. Of the nominations received, one teacher stood out above the rest. Mrs. Sarah Lima, a teacher at Rosholt Middle School was selected as the recipient of the 2018 Excellence in Education Golden Apple Award. Mrs. Lima is a Math & ELA teacher at Rosholt Middle School who has been teaching for 18 years. The nomination we received for Sarah displayed her true commitment, not only to building relationships with her students, but to continuing her professional development and education. She is the only teacher on the Rosholt staff who is Nationally Board Certified. Sarah’s family and colleagues at the Rosholt District were there to accompany her and share in recognizing her for this award. Title of Presentation: “How to Align with Yourself for Success!” About Our Program: Discover four powerful shifts that can lead to the life of your dreams by deepening relationships, eliminating energy suckers, reclaiming precious “me-time”, and redefining your perspective on work! Key Points that our audience will take home: • • • • • •

How you can enjoy the high level of success you’ve achieved in business in ALL areas of your life. Why the thing that’s created your success at work may actually be working against you in your personal life…in fact, it’s a big reason why you never seem to have enough time in the day. The OLD SUCCESS MODEL and why it doesn’t work - especially for women. How you can create balance in your busy schedule so you can fully enjoy the life you’ve worked so hard to build…now. Not some distant day in the future. Learning strategies to share and set expectations. Understanding role modeling and mentorship.
