Introduction of Pörssi-Girls NAME MARJUT JALKANEN TITLE PRESIDENT AGE 25 MAJOR MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP

HOW DID YOU END UP IN ESN? MARJUT: I had my first great experiences with ESN Oulu in 2009 when I was studying at the University of Oulu. However, I moved to Jyväskylä and continued volunteering with ESN only after my own exchange in Spain. Starting from January 2012 I was the travel coordinator for two years and now I have been the president of ESN Jyväskylä for one semester. JEMMI: I had heard about ESN several times actually, but hadn’t really gone to events. I wanted to ge involved in some

organisational activity and found out more about ESN. It sounded like just the right thing for me, so I ended up applying for the treasurers position and got it.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE BEST THING IN ESN SO FAR? MARJUT: There are so many great things in ESN but let’s start with one that students from Pörssi will appreciate: professional skills. I have gained from working with ESN such experience that would be hard to come by otherwise at this stage of studies. As a student of management and leadership it is great to have the chance to actually lead people, not just study the theories from the books. What sets ESN apart from the other student organizations is the international and interdisciplinary aspects of it. It is really eyeopening to work with people from different fields of studies, not to mention from the varying cultural backgrounds. Furthermore, ESN is bigger than our local section here in Jyväskylä. There are thousands of young people who are doing the same things all around the Europe. One of the best moments of last semester was to meet some of them at the Annual General Meeting of the network in Milan. But the best thing with ESN is definitely the people I have met. I have friends all around the world now, and I know that being part of the ESN JKL family has improved my life in Jyväskylä beyond anything I could have dreamt of. JEMMI: It’s hard to mention only one thing since there are so many. But here are a few things: Meeting new people from all around the

world, networking with other student organisations, organising great events and parties, getting real work experience in my own field eg. bookkeeping, using English on a daily basis.

WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH THE CHICKEN? ESN Hen is our party chicken. She has been around for a couple of years (even though she went travelling for a while) and takes part in most of our events.

WHAT UP COMING EVENTS DO YOU HAVE? Next fall we have ESN JKL Kick-off party at the beginning of September. We have the Ultimate Sauna Experience, Café Lingua once a month and many parties, events and trips. Stay tuned.

WHAT KIND OF EVENTS DO YOU HAVE TOGETHER WITH PÖRSSI? Sitsit + taking part in each other’s freshman parties. But I think we might come up with something else when the semester starts. Maybe we could do some sports together?
