It was a fantastic weekend at Spring Mountain with 124 entries battling it out on the Mansell C circuit. Tires were screaming going through T1 and T2. Actually, they were screaming everywhere! Lap times were blazing fast. It’s also important to note that my newly acquired beard received overwhelming, positive feedback. Saturday’s action was chock full of twists and turns, ups and downs, smiles and frowns. Duane Selby and Ron Palmer suffered catastrophic engine failure and had to retire their steeds for the weekend. Did they leave the track and go home? No! They stayed and helped out with Competition Committee chores and a full tank of good cheer. Mike Monsalve (GT2) took 1st overall in the Red race followed by Alexandra Hainer in her GT2 with the fastest lap of the race at a 2:19.585. She was able to gain five places during the race. Dan Aspesi took 3rd overall in his GT1. Notably, John Heldman advanced seventeen places, Greg Gilson moved up eight, Lee Roesner and Anthony Paggio pushed forward for seven, Kevin Roush moved up six along with Rich Yochum, Steve Town, Bayan Salehi and James Buck.

The first Orange race was a blast for me. After a virtual white out following James McLoughlin’s blown air/oil separator in the first lap, Karen Robinson and I made it through safely. Shortly after, I got to go nose-to-tail with Ryan Moore for several laps, both of us in our Gulf livery Boxsters. Racing with Ryan was great. We left one another room, swapped places a couple of times and both worked hard on our race craft while doing it. We fist bumped during impound and both of us will remember

the “Gulf War” for a long time. Race results had Paul Barnes, Douglas Volder and Robert Thacker on the podium in Carrera Spec. Anders Hainer took 1st in Boxster Spec, followed by Scott Craig and Joe Wiederholt. Drew Waterhouse finished 4th in his Boxster, having advanced an impressive twelve positions. Don Kravig plowed forward nine places to take GT5. Hambis Charalambous brought home 1st in GT6. Paul Young nailed 1st in GT7. The second Orange race was a bust for me. A front plastic undertray broke loose on the underside of my car and served as an air scoop lifting the front end. The car understeered like never before. I had to retire early. Paul Barnes, Douglas Volder and Kip Waterhouse were podium finishers in Carrera Spec. Anders Hainer, Branimir Kovac and James McLoughlin took the podium in Boxster Spec. James improved his position by moving up eleven places during the race. That boy can drive! Larry Haas gained nine places and turned a 2:43.669 in his GT5. Nice work, Larry! Mike Avitt ran a 2:25.809 in his Modified 2 in the second Time Trial timed run. Mark Foley led the group in the last run of the day with a fastest lap of 2:34.385 in his GT4. Craig Booth did a 2:34.998 in Modified 3. CR Dutch pulled a 2:39.237 in GT5. It was great to see David Schlocker back on the track in his Boxster Spec after a long absence. He told me he felt a bit rusty but he’s determined to make up for lost track time. Alan Watts and Mickey Giacomazzi had very impressive showings in Boxster Spec. Vivek Hazari did a 2:45.094 in his Modified 4. In PDS, Terry Van Noy brought home a 2:43.494 in Stock 2. Joseph Miller showed off his stuff with a 2:34.187 in GT2. Justin Rivera did a 2:45.602 in Modified 3 followed closely behind by Marner Torio’s 2:45.990 in Stock 3. During the day on Saturday, Karen Robinson distributed decals honoring Chick Richardson. Drivers immediately applied them to their cars. Chick was a shining example of club spirit, sportsmanship and an appreciation for everything and everyone. At Saturday’s dinner, Duane Selby led a chorus of “Happy Birthday” for Karen Robinson because, well, it was her birthday and we all love Karen. Tom Mueller was leading Sunday’s Red race in his Prototype until lap six when Bob Mueller took over and pulled away from Mike Monsalve, Alexandra Hainer and Loren Beggs. Darin Moore drove hard in GT3 moving up seven positions during the race. Ana Predescu drove a good race finishing 2nd in GT3 behind Kevin Roush and in front of Steve Town, Evan Paggio, and six others. There was some contact in T1 and T2 with one lap to go and the track went full course yellow. The checkered flag flew and the race ended early with Bob Mueller, Tom Mueller and Eric Olberz sharing the podium. Unfortunately, John Armstrong’s car was shut down by its immobilizer so he couldn’t compete. But now he knows his immobilizer works (insert smiley emoji here). Carrera Spec action was fierce in Sunday’s Orange race with Paul Barnes finishing 1st, Douglas Volder 2nd and Bob Thacker 3rd. Anders Hainer set a new Boxster Spec track record in Sunday’s 10

Orange qualifying session with a 2:38.645 and earned a first place start. He then chose to start DFL in the Orange race and took 1st in BSR. Holy shimoly! Scott Craig and James McLoughlin rounded out the podium in Boxster Spec, behind Anders “I’ll start DFL” Hainer. Don Kravig gained nine positions in GT5. Well done, sir! Paul Young easily took 1st in GT7. The race unexpectedly went an extra lap. With adrenalin flowing, it didn’t seem to matter. Time Trialers were impressive once again. Mike Avitt (Modified 2) was fastest in timed session 1 with a blazing 2:23.870. Bryan Van Noy (Boxster Spec) turned an excellent 2:41.269. In timed session 2, Mark Foley (GT4) turned a 2:33.460 and Bob Gartland (GT2) followed with a 2:29.450. Alan Watts in Boxster Spec came in at a 2:45.395. The PDS group performed very well. In timed session 1, Joseph Miller showed his stuff in GT2 with a 2:34.187. Terry Van Noy in Stock 2 was fastest in timed run 3 with a 2:43.494. I had a great conversation with Dwain Dement about the Racers Clinic. A long-time proponent of opening up the Clinic to drivers with less than fully prepped race cars, Dwain was very happy with the drivers in the Blue group. It was a diverse bunch including Cliff Erson, who only had five track days (in his daily driver) under his belt. Dwain labeled him an “observer” in the classroom and the relative newbie learned a lot about passing and race etiquette that he never experienced during his previous track outings. Dwain then entered him in the PDS group and Cliff excelled. Diane Johnstone, with extensive PCA Utah experience including past President of her club, did a fantastic job on the track. Steve Town’s brother, Phil, had his GT4 Clubsport transported from Atlanta to participate. Phil had heard that the POC’s program was unlike any other in the country and his POC experience has him hoping to return for more. Dwain went on to praise the entire class. “Everyone has their head screwed on straight, most of them are pretty quick, they’re mindful of what’s around them and they’re following the rules. There’s not a single problem driver among them.” Drivers walked back to the classroom after being on track and discussed their experiences. They shared their thoughts, excitement and questions. They helped one another. That’s what our club is all about. Some participants weren’t immediately interested in racing but rather improving their passing skills and continuing to Time Trial. That’s another great thing about the POC. Members have the opportunity to drive at the level for which they’re qualified. There’s no judgement. Some drivers are more competitive than others. Some just want to come out and enjoy fun on the track and camaraderie in the paddock. Some have a competitive spirit that drives them to win. Dwain smiled, “This has been the perfect school.” Eight new rookies will join the Red and Orange groups. Chuckwalla is up next. Unfortunately, I missed it last year. I’m excited to drive to Desert Center in my rented RV and hit the track. My beard is planning to come along for the ride but yesterday, my granddaughter suggested I shave it off so… 12

Mueller, Roush, Parker & Powell Head East

Last month Bob Mueller, Kevin Roush, Steve Parker and Frank Powell headed east in order to compete at Trac 2021 Road America in Wisconsin. Over the weekend all three ran well placing high in the rankings. In the final ( 1.5 Hour Enduro) race, which included a field of 47 cars, Kevin and Bob joined forces and placed first overall in Mueller’s GT3 R, and Parker / Roush led much of first 2/3rds of the race before a small Bob Mueller mechanical parked the car. Then it was on to the Indianapolis Speedway to compete in a weekend of racing at the Porsche Sportscar ToFrank Powell gether Fest where Mueller and Parker finished 1st and 3rd in their first race. In winning Race 1 (and leading all laps), Bob was given the Pole for race 2 on Sunday. In this second race Steve would be starting 4th and Kevin, because he was knocked off the track in the first race at turn 4, was unable to finish a single lap so he had to start the race in P34 out of a 35-car field. In the second race, Frank unfortunately got

sidelined with transmission problems. Bob ran on the same tires he used on Saturday. His nemesis, Cory Freidman, switched to new tires and also to another car... a client’s GT3 R. Bob ran 2nd nearly all of race 2 and wound up finishing in second place. Within 5 laps, Kevin managed to move up to P4. His in-car camera looked like an “asteroids game” being 3 and 4 wide on that billiard table of a track. Now, right behind Steve, the two drivers changed positions with one another throughout the rest of the race. In the final lap Steve was running P3, slightly ahead of Kevin, UNTIL... in the second-to-last turn, Kevin managed to get a 944 between the two of them... then by running onto the grass, with 3/4 of a tire, he basically snookered Steve into giving up third. In a horse race to the finish, Kevin managed to hold on. Kevin stated “That 202 hunted Parker down like a furry animal:)” One can only imagine the love that was shared in impound. On Saturday October 23, we had the opportunity to provide POC members and prospective members a day with Ross Bentley. The event was held at the Courtyard Marriott, Irvine Spectrum, with 67 registered attendees. Ross brings to his presentations a unique combination of being a Rolex 24 hour winner, open wheel racer, successful author, and long time coach to professionals. There are few people in the industry with such an extensive background who are able to teach as thoroughly and professionally as Ross Bentley. In 2016, the last time Ross presented to a POC group, many of the participants were new to racing, and instructing. This time was no different. As before, Ross had everyone focused on the mental side and the nuances necessary for being a successful instructor. However this time Ross spent about about 40% of the time focused on off-track instruction and 60% on-track instruction. As many of us have experienced combining a weekend of racing with instructing where there is intense awareness to schedule limitations. Ross’ approach was simply “proper preparation.” Many relevant questions were asked as he challenged everyone to prepare properly in order to be successful both on and off the track. In the afternoon session Ross switched gears and presented the group with more ontrack racing material. He did a masterful job of communicating his ideas and insights considering such an eclectic audience. Every participant left at the end of the day wellequipped with thought provoking ideas. Many thanks to Tarrett Engineering, Porsche Irvine, Speed Gallery, Octavio Tequila, and Racers Safety/Alpinestars for sponsoring our event. In addition to sponsorship, Dan Comouche, General Manager of Porsche Irvine, was kind enough to send over to the Courtyard ballroom a 2021 Taycan Turbo S, the only one available locally. It was quite an attraction for everyone. Racers Safety and Alpinestars combined to set up a small shopping experience display as well as auctioning off a nice coat and racing gloves. And, Bob Mueller sent along plenty of Octavio Tequila samplers that made the closing of the event more “animated”...Thanks Bob! Many thanks to John Momeyer, Joe Wiederholt, Scott Craig, and Matt Hollander for your assistance in putting on the event. New Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS excels during final testing 32

718 Cayman The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 is getting a big brother: The 718 Cayman GT4 RS. The new top model of the 718 family is well prepared for its world premiere in November. During final testing and evaluation drives, the first 718 to carry the RS badge has impressively demonstrated its dynamic potential both on twisty mountain roads and on the racetrack.

GT4 RS Development driver Jörg Bergmeister has lapped the 20.832-kilometre Nürburgring-Nordschleife circuit in a lightly disguised production car in 7:09.300 minutes. The 718 Cayman GT4 RS completed the shorter 20.6 km lap, which had previously served as the benchmark, in 7:04.511 minutes – 23.6 seconds faster than its little brother, the 718 Cayman GT4.

POC History In The Rearview Mirror By Don Kravig, Precision Motion

Before we go way, way back...let’s talk a little bit about the recent races at Spring Mountain and an event that occurred during the last Red race. For those of you who were there, you would have seen a collision, with only two laps to go in the race, between Alexandra Hainer and Mike Monsalve. The collision resulted in both cars off at opposite sides of the track, with fender and wheel damage severe enough to require tows back to the pits. For those who did not witness it, it was quite notable that Alexandra climbed out of her car, looked it over and walked away just as cool as any 40 year pro ever could. Mike Monsalve was on the opposite side of the track from the pits, but he also was completely professional and cool. As most of you know, Mike has won the Tribute to LeMans multiple times and has won and or been competitive in everything he has raced in the last 20 years. Alexandra Hainer who just recently moved into the Red racing group has been blazing fast and starting to win at that level and is really showing her racing heritage. At the conclusion of this incident, both drivers were able to calmly speak with the competition committee and resolve all issues with complete professionalism and courtesy. Let me congratulate them both. For over 60 years, the POC has been a venue for people to compete and learn alongside drivers of the very highest caliber such as Anders Hainer and Dan Gurney, at each end of the spectrum. One thing you would learn from either of those two is how to conduct yourself in a classy and professional manner. The other interesting thing that happened in Spring Mountain was that Dwain’s cup school graduated an extremely talented group of future cup racers. This was maybe the best group I have ever observed from the side of the track, and it really impressed those of us who paid attention. Congratulations to all of them, and to Dwain for the job he does to bring these drivers along.

Let’s go way, way back to the late 50s and early 60s. When the POC was full of semi and full-on professional drivers. Most of which could not get into SCCA events as they were considered too professional. So, let’s describe a driver’s training school at the old Riverside Raceway (this recollection is courtesy of Michael Hammond). Imagine if you will, walking Riverside Raceway with the likes of Ritchie Ginther or Scooter Patrick, and watching full-on professionals take corners both correctly and incorrectly for the benefit of the students. By the time I came along in 1973, two of my first three driving instructors were full-on professionals and POC members. Which leads me to…The skill level in the POC. I really had no idea just how good the average POC driver was over the years until competing in various 2-4 club events (Corvette Club, Ferrari Club, BMW Club, etc), and watching the POC virtually wipe out the competition. It still happens today, as evidenced by Anders Hainer’s victory in Utah over all the PCA BSR racers. In 1968, and up through the early 80s the entry list for the various IMSA and TransAm events in some cases showed up to 50% POC member participants. I believe the very first Mexico City IMSA race was basically held together by the POC. Which leads me to the sportsmanship level in the POC. The sportsmanship evidenced by Alexandra and Mike (which by the way made the comp committee very happy), was just one in a very long line of classy acts that I have seen in 50 years of racing with the POC. My first exposure to it was two drivers swapping cars to see if there was something in the driving or the car that made them non-competitive. And oh by the way, the faster driver was usually faster in both cars, and led to the noncompetitive driver taking steps to become better. Today, those of you in BSR receive setup tips, and driving tips from all the top drivers who are just trying to make the whole field better. This is in our heritage

Let me close with a little story from Mike Hammond, who competed in the POC for 60 years...and ran the first six La Carrera road races in his ‘67 S, finishing in the top 5 every time. The story goes like this: The first La Carrera race had at least a couple of motorcycle guys killed in Mexico and had numerous cars destroyed which led to a change in Mike’s driving style which he later used in the Porsche 934 at Sebring. “The problem with the La Carrera is that the Mexican citizens and all their animals still intended to use the road in a normal fashion, so I had to drive the whole race (100 miles) with my left foot on the brake. Our speeds were totally dictated by visibility and at times it did not even look like a race. My navigator Jim Corbeil (another long time POC pro) was petrified and at the close of the race we wound up loading up some other injured drivers to get them over the border before the locals could extract mordida from them.” Look for Mike at our banquet in January, along with other of our well known pros. Let me close with my favorite Hemingway quote: “There are only three sports, auto racing, mountain climbing and big game hunting. All the rest are games.” - Ernest Hemingway See you at the track.
