Te Ana Ngai Tahu Rock Art Centre
Long known for its rolling hills, stunning mountain views and relaxed pace of life, the South Canterbury region hides a lesser known secret of enormous cultural and historical significance. Ancient limestone caves and overhanging rock shelves have formed hundreds of natural art galleries. A large number of New Zealand’s remaining ancient Maori Rock Art sites (approximately 300 sites) lie within a 70km radius of Timaru, Aoraki South Canterbury. The Te Ana Ngai Tahu Rock Art Centre, based within the Timaru i-SITE Visitor Information Centre, is an interpretive cultural centre of international significance. The Te Ana Maori Rock Art Centre provides accessible, meaningful and authentic cultural interpretation for some of New Zealand's most significant examples of Maori rock art. Visitors to the centre follow the same paths as the people who created the rock art - a journey through time, seasons, earthly and spiritual worlds.

Rangitata Rafts
Rangitata Rafts has all the ingredients to create the perfect recipe for one of New Zealand’s most exciting rafting adventures. Combine spectacular Lord of the Rings scenery with some of New Zealand’s most thrilling stretches of grade 1 – grade 5 white water for twoand-a-half hours, add delicious meals and an amazing atmosphere, and you’ll understand why our rafting adventures are so popular. Rangitata Rafts is the only operator on this unique stretch of river and offers longer time on the river than most other New Zealand one-day rafting trips. Towards the end of your experience we allow time for you to float in the calmer turquoise waters, surf the rafts in the smaller rapids and take an optional ‘leap of faith’ from a jump rock.
No previous experience necessary - full training is provided as the rapids progressively gain excitement from grades 1 – 5, with the option to walk around any rapids. Minimum age 15 years and reasonable standard of fitness is required. Lower river options provide a fun introduction to rafting suitable for families and those interested in a more sedate river experience.

Peel Forest Lodge and Horse Treks
Peel Forest is one of the best kept secrets of South Canterbury. Four Peaks High Country Track Four Peaks High Country Track is a unique walking, tramping, or mountain biking experience, situated on our working high country sheep station 15 kilometres west of Geraldine and 2 hours south of Christchurch in the South Island of New Zealand. This 3 day/ 3 night track is a spectacular opportunity to experience the great outdoor paradise of the South Island high country. The walking track covers a 40 kilometre round trip over Four Peaks Station following the route taken by pioneering farmers and musterers in the 1850s when sheep were first farmed in the area. The mountain bike trip is about 60 kilometres, following 4-wheel drive tracks. The Track season is from November - April and is limited to 8 walkers or bikers per day. Limiting the number of walkers or mountain bikers to a maximum of 8 per day ensures you experience the peace and tranquillity of the Four Peaks high country environment, and prevents disruption to the stock being farmed there.
Now available is the Pack Run which is a personally guided 4-wheel drive over Four Peaks Station, including a high country picnic for lunch. This is aptly named as the run may include picking up packs along the way and dropping them off at the next hut, en route. Full day excursion ex Timaru or Geraldine.

A Place to Stay South Canterbury Accommodation South Canterbury offers a range of accommodation options from budget through to special character and boutique product.
A central location, healthy economy and active events programme (including many large sporting events), means that South Canterbury accommodation providers are well versed in serving the needs of special interest groups, tours, business travellers and families. The Timaru District has an approximate 2000 bed accommodation capacity. Options, from central Timaru and throughout several smaller townships around South Canterbury, range from backpacker, holiday park, hotel or motel through to boutique Bed & Breakfast and luxury lodge accommodation. Motel accommodation ranges from budget to four star and includes QualMark, Golden Chain, Host Accommodation
properties. Larger hotels/motels have licensed bar and restaurant facilities and can accommodate groups on a dinner, bed & breakfast basis. Where onsite meal services are not available, these are usually within close walking distance. Character and B&B accommodation ranges from approximately $95 to $300 + per night. Lodges in the area often have links to guided hunting and fishing experiences and operators experienced in serving international markets. Several local B&B and Lodge accommodation providers are listed on the South Canterbury Food & Wine Trail.
