THE MARKETING AND ENTERTAINMENT MAN BEHIND MARGATE’S ICONIC ZURI By Quan Dambuza is “respect & humility” skill alone is not enough, in order to be successful and remain relevant you need to respect yourself first , respect your colleagues and everyone in your industry then all will fall into place. Who keeps himself up to date with the current fast moving trends through his social media plartforms. Volo is always on his phone, that yOU may think he is unfriendly in public spaces.

Quan Dambuza Editor | 081 743 8224 dambuzaq@gmail.com

Having been on the DJ stage for more than 10 years straight, he always try to be interactive when he is performing through infusing catchy tracks and signals. Anyone who has seen Volo Da Saint play live will attest that he has a unique style and a very wide interesting music selection coupled with a lot of experience in the game. Apart from his busy schedule, Volo Da Saint says he loves music because he get to travel and sleep in nice places and see the beauty of our country without paying a cent. Something up-coming DJs only dream about.

Volo Da Saint the marketing and entertainment man behind Margate’s iconic ZURI, now hailed as EC’s finest house DJ grew up in a very musical family, his grandfather was a choir master , and his mother was a chorister, so it came natural for him to be in music, “but as much as I can sing I chose to be a DJ because contrary to popular belief I am shy sharp hiding behind the decks is much better than hiding behind the mic.” Says Volo Da Saint Volo believes that besides skill , one thing which is very key

Eastern Cape Tourism is quite interesting and the province offers scenic beauty. Volo is currently involved in a musical experience which does exactly that. “The Wild Coast Tour is a musical tour which myself in collaboration with DJ 101, we just want to explore Eastern Cape while engaging with music lovers at the same time, organizing this one particularly is easy cause we’re all working for a common goal... but generally organising events is very difficult more especially in a small town like ours where most people are not used to such events, so one has to be very careful in their approach, pick artists carefully, pick venues carefully and just everything in general has to be picked carefully” says Volo Da Saint

Because of Covid everyone had to cancel shows and Volo Da Saint was no exception, as he reminisces, “It was really sad for all of us but we had to make a decision which would have favored people’s lives above everything else... what I can promise is that the best is yet to come” To people who think the Bizana born and raised DJ is somewhat riding a high-horse he says he honestly have no opinion on that because their opinions as well are misinformed, people who know him will tell that the total opposite of what those who don’t know him think about him. Volo Da Saint had this advice for upcoming musicians “I would advise them to take themselves seriously, strive to learn from everyone not to compete.” Pondoland Times was really privileged to sit down and talk with Eastern Cape’s own sun, whom is not just a dj but also have done some philanthropist work.”I have assisted a couple of young people who were struggling to get to university because they struggled to get finances, I just don’t really post about such things as I don’t see a need to more especially because it’s individuals whom I would rather protect their privacy and identities” – says Volo Da Saint who promised us that he has quite a lot on the pipelines but just awaiting the situation with COVID to be back to normal then I can share them.

Ikamva Hope Project In The Quest To Develop Amadiba Community By Quan Dambuza technological literacy, and youth business empowerment The Project was founded in the Baleni area within the Amadiba community. Yolisa was born within the Amadiba local community in the Mngungu area and is an educational activist who has worked with multiple educational advancement NGOs. Currently heading the Igqangi project, an after-school project that operates at Baleni High School. Yolisa saw the need to start the project after looking at the key issues that are affecting the community and the need for the community members to come together to devise a plan to develop the local community. “My experience at Igqangi Project and other NGOs that I have volunteered and worked with have brought light to the formation of the project.” says Yolisa

(pictured above): Ikamva Hope Project in session Ikamva Hope Project is an organisation that was founded and formed in 2020 by the three local community members of the Amadiba community (Mchitwa Citro, Yolisa Smith, and Muzi Nduku). Muzi is a local activist that currently is a leader of the Muzinduku Youth development foundation. Muzi has worked and participated in multiple youth development initiatives and has been a driver for change in Mbizana as a town. Muzi saw the need for the youth to be the change drivers in bringing the change with the Amadiba Community. Citro is a community member and the business person within the community and has worked tirelessly in leading the Baleni Community. The organization has collaborated with Nemisa (National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa), globally there has been

a shift in the focus to the more computerised world and this came with the introduction of the 4th Industrial Revolution, the Internet of things, and digitalised world. South Africa as a count has channelled the energy in the development and upskilling of citizens for this world change. Even though these initiatives are generally implemented there is a lack of ICT skills in the local rural communities. As a result of this Ikamva Hope Project partnered with Nemisa (National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa) e-skills collab to provide the Basic Mobile literacy workshops. The focus of the workshops was to raise awareness around digital literacy and the fourth industrial revolution for the benefit of the youth, women, and the rural community members. The workshop focused on the 4TH IR and digital technologies and how they affect the way people leave. The workshops were held at Mngungu School and Baleni School and a large number of the local residents came to learn about digital skills and how they are shaping the world. A lot of the residences of Amadiba Community are not computer literate and do now have a strong knowledge of how to use the commonly available technologies like smartphones and tablets to their advantage hence the workshops went a long way in making sure that the local community members are equipped for these changing technologies.

South Africa has enjoyed almost 27 years of Constitutional Sovereignty and as such, many times the country has been praised for having one of the best constitutions in the world. It is no secret that South Africa has had a chequered history of apartheid and racial segregation laws which were imposed by apartheid government upon the majority of black indigenous individuals living within the country's borders. The final Constitution of the South Africa, Act 108 of 1996 has in it an enshrined Bill of Rights (Chapter 2) and states in section 2 that "This Constitution is the supreme law of the Republic; law or conduct inconsistent with it is invalid, and obligations imposed by it must be fulfilled". It goes on to stipulate in section 7 that "This Bill of Rights is a cornerstone of democracy in South Africa. It enshrines the rights of all people in our country and affirms the democratic values of human dignity, equality and freedom". Furthermore, it is undisputed that apartheid government instilled norms and values that undermine the dignity of the African people, however, it would not be entirely true to say that we as African people lived in total equality and that we treated all people with inherent dignity. There are certain practices within our communities which are deeply rooted in the guise of culture or tradition which undermine the very norms we hold so dearly as Africans. The question now arises is: do we as South Africans still practice norms and traditions which are derogatory to uplifting human rights and human dignity, in other words do we still have unconstitutional practices that we indulge in? ...to be continued on the next issue!
