NPA IS READY TO START WITH ZUMA’S TRIAL • The KwaZulu-Natal High Court dismissed former president Jacob Zuma's special plea. • The court found Zuma had failed to prove that State advocate Billy Downer lacked the title to prosecute him.

• Zuma's corruption trial will go ahead on 11 April 2022.

In this month’s issue:

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says it’s ready to start with former president Jacob Zuma’s corruption trial. The NPA is hoping all Zuma's fresh bids will be dealt with before the trial date. Zuma, removed by the governing African National Congress (ANC) in 2018, had argued that the prosecutor was biased against him and submitted a “special plea” to the Pietermaritzburg High Court to have him replaced. Judge Piet Koen earlier dismissed his application to remove prosecutor Billy Downer from the case. Delivering judgment on Tuesday, KwaZulu-Natal High Court Judge Piet Koen said the former president had failed to show that State advocate Billy Downer lacked the "title" to prosecute him. Koen said many of the allegations Zuma raised against Downer were based on speculation or suspicion or inadmissible hearsay "The allegations of bias against Mr Downer were based largely on the fact that he has allegedly not been independent and objective. On a proper interpretation of [Section] 106(1)(h) of the CPA (Criminal Procedure Act), that does not deprive Mr Downer of the title to prosecute." - said Downer The former president faces 16 charges relating to 783 payments he allegedly received from his former financial advisor, Schabir Shaik, as well as a R500 000-a-year bribe that the State said Shaik facilitated for him from French arms company Thales.

BISHO HIGH COURT RULING IN FAVOUR OF OSCAR MABUYANE AND BABALO MADIKIZELA Avuyile Ncanga

he Bhisho High Court has ruled in favour of Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane and MEC of Public Works and Infrastructure Babalo Madikizela. They had made an urgent application to suspend the enforcement of remedial actions of Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane. They claim they would suffer permanent damage if the remedial actions of the public protector are implemented. The public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane released a report on the embezzle-

ment of funds from the R1.1 million that was meant for the memorial service of Winnie Madikizela Mandela. The premier insisted that in July 2018, when he decided to renovate his house, he had asked Madikizela for a loan of R450 000.

Mabuyabe stated that Mkhwebane was given a copy of the loan agreement which made it clear that the first payment would be made in 2019-2023 and the amount has been fully paid.—Photo/Masi Losi/ The Times/Gallo Images/Getty

FRIDAY 29 OCTOBER 2021

VOLO DA SAINT UNDER FIRE FOR SAYING PEOPLE MUST VOTE FOR THE ANC Avuyile Ncanga It was a mixture of emotions because some followers supported the idea and most expressed how the ANC is doing nothing for them, and they don't see why they should vote for the party. One Follower Jeff Mahlabela, made allegations that the DJ is campaigning for ANC in exchange for bookings and sponsorship from the Municipality. The DJ did not waste any time and seemed adamant that he will not allow anyone speak over him or bully him. He expressed how he reserved his right to vote for a political party of his choice; and he had no interest in becoming a politician.

What seemed like a joke people took very seriously and fired shots at the DJ. The prominent, Award winning and events organiser posted on his Facebook account a call out for people to vote for ANC.

"On Saturday (23 Oct 2021) I will be performing at an ANC event FOR FREE as a way of showing gratitude for all the opportunities it has created for me. You are also allowed to vote for a political party of your choice, I won’t judge you" Volo Da Saint

"Guys let’s unite, on the 1st of November we all vote for ANC, then the following day we all vote for other Parties". the post read.

As Pondoland Times we could not get a comment from the DJ, we worked with what is available on the public domain.

The contemptuous queue marshals at the unemployment line poked holes at his graduation gown each time they walked past him, and in the very ideology that sutured it when they told him to come back the next day. He patched the holes with synthetic courage that breathed like hope and draped like despair. His friends’ mercies took him on trips of escapism, if the road to prosperity had a dead end sign, beer gave him the balls to raise his middle finger to it, it made the world of endless impossibilities an immaterial condition. With each sip he found joy and faced the grip of anxiety the next day; a cold case of brew worries. Hymn 108 in Amagama evangeli gnawed at his soul; “Ngifuna yini kuyena? Ngifun’ impumulo. Kungekho Ntokozo enye, efana naleyo” – “What do I want from Him? I want rest. For there is no greater joy than that which comes from Him.” He had a complicated relationship with faith. On the one hand he could see the appeal of the assurance that a greater power was moving chess pieces behind the scenes for you and that one day all would be alright, if not here then in the life after. But on the left hand the pursuit of miracles had created a million rand industry that fed a few tricksters off the desperation of the masses. “He prepares a table for me, in the presence of my starving congregation.” He suffered cognitive dissonance. But perhaps more than the hope of salvation or false adverts from major prophets, faith appealed to a much more terrifying need. We suffer many injuries on this journey to death, we stomach them like women, flee like men or hide like children. The unbearable insult to these injuries is the realisation that they are just a result of impersonal fortuities. While we might face deliberate and unique violence as a race, class, gender or sexuality within those groups we are fungible. There might be a force working against black people, the working class, women or LGBTQ but the individual black person, worker, woman or transgender is not targeted by this force. For most people, nobody is tirelessly working against them, shit just hits their fans, randomly. We cannot deal with this indifference, the stare is the coldest when you look into its eyes, only to find it’s actually looking past you. To deal with this indifference some believe old inventions about devils, others imagine haters. TO READ FULL ARTICLE VISIT OUR WEBSITE www.pondolandtimes.co.za

The resort provided Queens Greens with a complete borehole, a pump as well as an irrigation system. In addition to this, Wild Coast provided equipment to work the fields, such as wheelbarrows, spades, forks and hoes, as well as seedlings, fertilizer, and pesticide. The total value of the contribution is R130,000. Vincent Bulala, SED & Community Engagement Manager, says the donations build on previous projects developed for Queens Greens. “We have been able to move them from subsistence farming to being fully self-sustaining. There is already a market and demand for their crops from local supermarkets and fellow villagers. We hope to enroll them as a vegetable supplier.”

The project started last December when Wild Coast Sun ‘s contractor started drilling and identified water, which brought the project to life.

PAGE 3 OSCAR MABUYANE OFFICIALLY HANDS PREMIER OVER FLAGSTAFF HEALTHCARE CENTRE Quan Dambuza

On Thursday morning Mabuyane officially unveiled the state-of-the-art building. It is an upgrade of Flagstaff Clinic, which was previously functioning in an old Post Office dilapidated structure. The healthcare centre is servicing a population of about 45 732 in 7 wards with 43 villages. Some of the services available at the centre will include dental care, physical rehabilitation services, X-Ray, trauma unit, mental health services, social work services, pharmaceutical services, and community-based health-care services.

The Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane just days after the Bisho High Court ruled in his favour on a recent battle with the public protector, officially handed over the Flagstaff Healthcare Centre to the people of Flagstaff.

The premier says this is part of the province’s investment towards the refurbishment of 67 health facilities across the province of the Eastern Cape.

Some part of preserving culture and identity lies in the language of origin, Nzaliseko Manqina took the liberty of compiling short stories, poems, proverbs and sayings, including names of children written in Isimpondo. Nzaliseko says he started his research on the use of Isimpondo back in 2017 and finally started compiling the book at the beginning of hard lock down 2020. The book (SAKHELA PHEZU KWESISEKELO) eventually got published in September 2021 SAKHELA PHEZU KWESISEKELO: Has short stories that can be read by parents to their children, which plays an important role in making sure that the children grow up knowing their language and that can contribute to them having pride in the use of their own language. “Even though Isimpondo is not one of south African official languages the owners of this language have worked hard in making sure it does not become non-existent” said Nzaliseko Manqina The author elaborated that the aim of this book is to make sure that the language is written down, which also serves as a point of reference for learning more about our native language. Nzaliseko says that, he applied the use of proverbs and sayings to give a wealthier and compound use of the language, because he believes that this book will open up a way for other authors to be brave enough to write in Isimpondo. Nzaliseko Manqina says this book is looking at: -Telling more stories in Isimpondo -Reaching most Pondo land house holds -Encourage the Youth to write, speak and read Isimpondo -Encouraging local radio stations to have their short storied told in Isimpondo -Pondo land diplomats to advocate for Isimpondo to be an official language -Short films in Isimpondo The author says he had challenges in finding meaning of Isimpondo words in the internet which proves that the language is not recognised however, he also says that he received help from people who are more familiar with the language hence the success in writing the book.
