J

ohn Greene looks out over his polo fields and recalls a time, not too many years ago, when after a long day of work at the John Greene Land Company office at Arranmore Farm & Polo Club, he would simply come downstairs, throw on his polo boots and prepare for the evening match. “That’s why we start at 5:30.” he quips. A handful of Chicago area families, who were weaned on Oak Brook Polo, set out to do things differently than the generation before them. These were hard working men and women; developer’s, lawyers, business owners and such, who were passionate about the sport and have now passed those traditions onto their children. These are not the lives of rich and famous, but more that of modern day cowboys. They worked hard and they played polo hard. This is the spirit that

spawned “Working Man’s polo,” which is sometimes referred to as “Poor Man’s polo” or “Backyard polo.” “You don’t need to be a prince to play polo. All you need is to learn to ride and have a few horses.” says George Alexander of Blackberry Polo Club in Batavia. “Some people spend their discretionary income on restaurants because they love to eat, some go to expensive night clubs because they love to dance, some go to Las Vegas because the love to throw the dice, and some play polo.” Chicago Polo Magazine sat down with Dick Kuhn, Frank “Buzz” Rackley, Tim Greene, Diane Kraml and Angelo Kleronomos for a few tales and a glimpse into their family photos.

“That’s why we start at 5:30.” - John Greene 57

THE KUHNS

I

f there was a six degrees of separation meme in the Chicago Polo community, all points would start with The Kuhn Family. Everyone seems to have a “best life” memory of time spent at Fairlane Farms and many learned to play polo in their school. Walt Kuhn was a major figure in the polo community and is credited with bringing the sport to Naperville. He was also a key figure behind the movement that ushered in “Working Man’s polo” in Chicago. He was remembered for saying, “I always felt strongly that this sport was not just for the rich and famous.” Having both been involved in riding and Fox Hunting, Walt, or “Junie” as he was nicknamed, and his wife Shirley were introduced to the sport by the Kraml family. After taking a polo clinic at Oak Brook Polo Club, they were hooked. This was in 1967 and later that same year, Walt and Shirley bought Fairlane Farms on Hobson Road in Naperville. Dicks tale is one of a second-generation player, who was at first little reluctant to follow in his father’s footsteps, telling him that he thought the sport was a bit ”bourgeoisie” for his taste. So much so, that he even resisted such inoxious things like polo boots at first, instead he would play in his sneakers. That did not last long, as polo took hold of him and then some. Through polo, he was able to see the world, playing in such loca-

Dick Kuhn

FAIRLAINE FARMS 58

tions as India, South Africa, Argentina and throughout the United States. Dick says, “I love that I can go to Wyoming or California and walk into a polo club and there will be thirty people that I know.” He ads, “as Winston Churchill said, ‘a polo handicap is the world’s greatest passport.’” Dick played at a very high level for many years and at his height of his polo career, he was a 5-goal outdoor and 6-goal indoor player. When asked what Chicago Polo meant to him he says, “My goal was always to play at Oak Brook. My brother John and I won the National President’s Cup, which was an 8-goal tournament. We were both rated 2-goals and we played on a team with the Wigdahls. The tournament happened to fall during the US Open, so everyone who was anyone in polo, was there watching us. Both sides of the fields were filled. For the first time, we were center of attention...and we won! We knocked out some really good teams that would never have been there if it was not for the U.S Open. We could only have dreamed of playing in front of crowds like this. After that, we were in Polo News and everything just took off. We played for Michael Butler and the next year with Stuart Mackenzie and Tommy Harrison. We became regulars Oak Brook and then got to play all over the world.”

wenty-year old Tim Greene was on break from college and visiting Palm Beach. He was there to play a little polo and get some sun with fellow player and pal Clifton Yandel. Tim’s hair was long and his look carefree. One night, Clifton called his room and said,” Clean yourself up, we are going to Mar-a-Lago.” Of course, Mar-a-Lago is Donald Trump’s famed seaside resort in Palm Beach. Tim did his best, but still resembled a surfer dude more than someone who fit in at the swanky resort. The duo arrived to find a sea of beauty queens and notable types mingling, anxiously awaiting the arrival of “The Donald.” Clifton was comfortable and charming. Tim stood back, just a little bit out of place. Then Trump arrived. Holding court, he greeted his guests one by one before landing his eyes on Tim. He looked Tim up and down and said suspiciously, “Who are you?” Tim thought for a second before he shrugged, “I’m a polo player.” That was enough. Trump moved on. Tim laughed when recalling the story, as the glamorous side of the sport was the last thing that he ever cared about when it came to playing polo. He remembered the first time he really hit the ball while galloping down the field. “I was hooked.

That feeling, there’s nothing like it in the world.” As a young kid, Tim was not especially interested in the sport. “I was more interested in playing hockey.” But when he asked his dad, polo player and Arranmore founder John Greene if he could play hockey he was quickly shot down saying, “It’s too expensive and too dangerous. Play polo.” John Greene is a first generation player. He found his love of horses at an early age during an elementary school field trip, which he recalls like it was yesterday. John was one of the key figures in the “Working Man’s polo” movement. He was a partner in Naperville Polo Club and then he purchased South Shore Polo Club in Wellington, Florida. John bought Arranmore Farm & Polo Club in 1999. In the 80’s, John and his late wife Patti, used to have the joy of riding their horses to Fairlane Farms or Greene Valley from their home in Naperville. Still playing at 71, John Greene is rated a 1-goal player. His oldest daughter, Shannon Greene Robb, owns Chicago Polo and Arranmore Events. As a teen, Shannon played with the Naperville Women’s Polo Club. Megan Greene Llambias, the youngest, also played and is now married to Argentine 5-goal polo pro, Maco Llambias.

THE RACKLEYS

Three generations of Rackley’s have played polo at Oak Brook.” Buzz says proudly. That would be himself, his son Tod, a 3-goal player, and his granddaughter Mimi. “Polo has meant everything to me in my life.” He couldn’t be more happy that his son and daughter have carried on the traditions that he holds so dear, and that both his granddaughters, Claire and Mimi Shirey also play. Buzz came from Pittsburgh and had no real involvement in Polo before his parents sent him to not one, but two military schools. Admittedly, he was a bit of a hellion. First he attended Culver Military Academy and then Valley Forge, which is where he really got hooked on polo. Buzz moved to Chicago after college, where his parents made introductions for him to play at Oak Brook, but he says, “I always wanted to do things on my own. I was more drawn to backyard polo, playing in a more casual environment, than to what was going on at Oak Brook at the time.” Dick Kuhn recalls, “I remember we all sat around the TV at Fairlane Farms and watched Buzz and his mother Marguerite Rackley attending Tricia Nixon’s wedding. It was a very fancy affair in the day.” “One day we are out on the field and the next we are watching him on TV at the White House.” Buzz says “Yeah, the guys teased me a lot when I got back. Really, all I ever wanted to do was play polo.”

He worked very closely with Walt Kuhn at Fairlane Farms. Walt was a great guy says Buzz. “He was Mr. Personality. Everybody loved him and we were a match made in heaven. He was, you know, happy go lucky, and I was more organized. I wrote the by-laws, registered with the USPA and made sure the games started on time. I am proud to say- they always did. Buzz was very serious about the rules and regulations. He was instrumental in getting laws passed and pushing the powers to be with changes he felt were important for safety and level of play. In the mid 70’s, George Alexander, Walt and Buzz went to the DuPage County Forest Preserve and presented a plan. “We proposed to take sixty acres and develop it into polo fields. We planted blue-grass and put in a watering system. It was called the Greene Valley Polo Club.” He reminisces, “I think I broke every bone in my body at Greene Valley, my shoulder, some ribs.” The sport caught on and eventually more and more players joined the polo club and others built their own. These days Buzz feels lucky to live vicariously and stay involved in the sport through his son He comes to the matches at Arranmore and Oak Brook any chance he gets. Both Tod and Mimi can be seen playing in the Chicago Polo Season this summer.

THE KLERONOMOS

A

ngelo really loves the organizational side of the polo. He revels in the great responsibility of a barn, maintaining a string of ponies, putting together a team and plotting out plays before and during each game. Angelo started playing relatively late for polo. He was in his early 40’s and had no background in the sport. After closing a condominium deal in Naperville, his business associate John Greene, suggested that he try playing polo. Angelo started riding at Fairlane Farms and enjoyed spending time with everyone socially, watching football, drinking some beer. And so, he decided to give it a try. He was hooked quickly and soon after decided to buy his first farm, Maple Lane Farm. Angelo recalls, “I went to buy my first horse and was surprised by how expensive it was, so I negotiated with the owner and ended up buying the farm.“ He adds, “John called me up soon afterwards to tell me to come by the barn, that he had a present for me. I expected a saddle or something like that but when I arrived it was a horse, I learned to play on that horse. I named him ‘Condo.’”

One of Angelo’s biggest hurdles in learning to play was being left-handed. He overcame and started playing and then began sponsoring teams. He hired many pros over the years, including; Cali Garcia, Julio Arellano, Luis Escobar, Tommy Biddle, David Offen, Matías Magrini, Valle Aguilar, Pancho Aguilar, Julian Aguilar, Brandon Phillips, Jeff Hall, Allan Martinez, Kris Kampsen, Guillermo Aguero, Stuart Erskine, Tommy Harris, Jose Segers, Miguel Torres, Frankie Bilbao. Soon, he purchased Morgan Creek in Oswego which he still owns today. His son Dean got involved early on and like most sports that he tried, he excelled quickly. He still plays every summer in Chicago. He is rated 2-goals. Angelo is proud of his son, and recalls the story of Dean’s first big game. Angelo had broken his arm in the middle of a match and so he was forced to send Dean in to replace him. He sat on the sidelines watching with pride. Dean was impressive and more than held his own that day. Dean still plays and is considered one of the best amateur players in Chicago.

pon meeting eighteen-year-old Mimi Shirey one cannot help but be impressed by her sweet, well-mannered na-

ture. She is pretty and poised, more like a teen-beautyqueen than a Polo player. This seems to belie the fierce girl who competed aggressively with seasoned pros this past summer during Chicago Polo’s Sunday matches. There is much more than meets the eye with this young player. Mimi started riding at age three, participating competitively in the show jumping circuit for ten years before trying Polo. She never looked back. Drawn in by the close and supportive nature of the Chicago Polo community, says Shirey “I’ve always felt more at home with Polo.” That is no surprise of course, as she follows in the well-travelled footsteps of her family, the Rackley, Yackley and Shirey clan. Her mother Julie, father Dan and grandfather “Buzz” all played and her uncle Tod is still a pro. She found support too among other Chicago players like Samantha Falbe and pros Matias Obregon and Horacio Onetto (whom she refers to as “Horacito”.)

78

She doesn’t want special treatment on the field or for anyone to give her a break says Shirey, “Horacio, Matias and Tod treat me like an equal. That’s what I want. They put everyone else first on the field, and I’m really lucky to learn from them.” She says of her uncle. “He’s hard on me, but in a good way. He wants to see me be successful.” Mimi graduated from Culver Academy with the class of 2016 this past May and plans to attend Texas A&M in the fall. It will be a hard transition for her. She loved her years at Culver, an elite boarding school in Indiana. “It’s like my second family now and I’ve had a difficult time saying goodbye.” Majoring in Chemistry, she hopes to work in a lab upon gradua-

It’s said that 80% of a Polo player’s success is about their horses. Mimi agrees with this and then some. “Polo is not about you. Yes, you have to be brave, aware and responsive, but the horse always comes first. The horses are everything in the game and I try to value each minute of my playing time with them. As Uncle Tod says, ‘you get up early, do sets, bath them, clip them, tack them. Think about all the money you spend on saddles, shoes, and even the gas to get to games. You do all of this for just 7 ½ minutes of playing time with your horses, and it’s worth it.’
