FROM THE TEAM

Cirque de Soleil returns...

WELCOME TO AUGUST 2015!

to south florida for 15 performances at the BB&T Center in August. See Page 15 for more information.

Music is alive and well here in south Florida, and in Pompano Beach

in particular. Our beloved Amphitheatre (really, if there's a better venue around these parts than the AMP, we'd be very surprised) has come back to life; our public schools offer more than you might think at the elementary, middle and high school levels; thanks to Fashion Forward, you can even dress the part of a rock star.

Photo: Martin Girard/ shootstudio.ca Costumes: Eiko Ishioka © 2014 Cirque du Soleil

Our cover features Lita Ford, who will be rockin' the AMP later this month along with a host of other musical luminaries. It is, of course, almost time for school; we've got your high schoolers and college bound progeny covered as well. Whatever your plans, enjoy the month, and we hope you have a song in your heart!

Have a great August! Dawne Richards, Publisher

DRESSING LIKE A ROCK STAR The only limit is your imagination By Elaine Simmons

Photo Š James Stafford Photography

Jon Bon Jovi, Mick Jagger, Axl Rose, Jim Morrison, Jimmy Hendrix. Just hearing those names gives me goose bumps. The charm, the lifestyle, the fans, the respect, are all incredible attributes that define the life of a Rock Star. We have been inspired through their lives. We have been moved, and we have felt an amazing sense of richness that compliments their presence. And, we have all dreamt of becoming a Rock Star at one point or another. It is not a simple thing to do, though. It demands talent, hard work, luck, great timing, and many other skills and characteristics, but we can all feel like one. How? We can achieve this through the power of style and clothing. Identify the characteristics of one, combine them with our own unique strengths, and build an identity around them. Style and clothing have the ability to transform our state of mind. A specific outfit can unconsciously put us in the character of a rock star. The only limitation is your imagination.

To create this look, think blacks, blues, whites, chains, and most of all individuality. Styles for Men To look like a true rock star, choose dark colors when selecting a wardrobe. They like to wear lots of black, both onstage and off. Dark gray or black jeans paired with a black or vintage band T-shirt. Add a dark-colored denim jacket. To add to the rock star look, try skipping a haircut and shave.

Photo Š paultarasenko - Fotolia.com

Styles for Women The Female rock star can be creative with their clothes, and like numerous top female stars, the messier the look, the better. They wear lots of short skirts and baby doll dresses, often paired with colored tights, high heels, or combat boots. A skinny, bright belt worn with skinny black, blue, red or white jeans is also good. Apply extra heavy makeup on your eyes and lips. Accessories Use matching accessories to put the finishing touches on your new look. Male rock stars often wear large rings, chains, and necklaces. So do the females, but they include wide cuff bangles and big round earrings. Other distinctive items include crosses, skulls, and beads. Male and female rock stars are also known for scarves, often just hanging and untied around their necks. For an even better effect, try on a temporary tattoo. Add patches and badges randomly on bags and clothing, or invest in a studded belt. Hair Shop around for dye or wash-in colors and gels, or get a great haircut. A great style is defined as different and new, whether subtle or extreme. Standing out and looking weird while remaining confident is the key to a good sense of style. A mop top, scruffy, or layered hairdo also looks good if you prefer having longer hair.

R

ock stars have a one-of-a-kind look, sometimes over the top and flashy. The look of a rock star, whether male or female, is all in the wardrobe. The color choices and the extra add-ons make the look believable.

Fun, facts, and musings from your local tailor

GAME, SET, MATCH Courtside tennis looks to love

The U.S. Open

will be underway at the end of August. As a spectator you are clearly free of such close scrutiny as that which is endured by those who are on the court, but that does not leave you off the hook style-wise. Whether attending the big event at Arthur Ashe stadium or your local tennis gathering, think before you dress for your courtside day. First of all, remember that you are not participating; you are a spectator and as such you should dress like one. Save that adorable tennis dress or your Fila matching shorts and polo shirt for the day you break out your racquet. Next, think about where you will be sitting, and how far your will need to walk to get there; and for goodness sake wear flats – you do not have to forsake fashion for your shoes – there are plenty of stylish footwear options to match your outfit. Do not think you can make an enjoyable day of it in heels – you will regret that decision. A crisp white shirt dress is tennis watching perfection. Pair it with ballerina flats – see the note above – shield the sun with your favorite shades or a small straw hat, add some color with an interchangeable scarf around the hat, and your look is complete.

Learn more: usopen.org

For a more casual approach, break out those sharp white shorts and pair with a classic striped sailor top – the French knew what they were doing inventing this piece – the style is enduring and can be interpreted into a cotton tee or a sweater. With this look you may want to go old school with some Tretorn tennis shoes; they come in every color imaginable and give your look a throwback nod to vintage tennis attire. Enjoy your day of watching serves and drop shots - remember your sunscreen and you’re good to go! MARITAL MINUTES

By Dr. Gina Stafford

Gender Roles

When my first son was born we did not bring him to daycare, but instead hired a babysitter. Her name was Lily and she was a very nice person. She had great values and I felt that she would take great care of my son (and I was correct – she did). When I was pregnant with our second child, my husband and I became very nervous. Although Lily was wonderful, childcare was expensive. It almost made no sense for one of us to work because the second salary was primarily going to pay for childcare. We made the decision that one of us would stay home with our sons. The month my second son was born, I graduated with my master’s degree. Because I had invested in my education, and had a clear picture of where I wanted my career to go (my husband was not as certain of his career aspirations at the time), we decided that it was best if I worked and my husband stayed home with the boys.

I am very proud of the choice my husband and I made. Although I wish I could have stayed home with my children, I know that having my husband stay home with them was the best decision. I was able to have a career and be a mom, my husband and I were able to avoid daycare costs, and my husband was able to begin a business that he loves (now that the kids are in school he is able to focus on his career as well).

My husband is the greatest father I ever met, but despite this he often did get stares or funny looks when he explained to someone that he was a stay-at-home dad. It is sad that my husband received these looks because the number of men who are assuming the role of caretaker has increased greatly over the last decade. According to the Pew Research Center (2014), fathers represent a growing share of all at-home parents (16% in 2012, up from 10% in 1989). According to Miller (2014), this “shift reveals a structural change in gender roles in families and at work in the United States”. I wish individuals had an open mind about gender roles, because I believe that as time goes on there will no longer going to be traditional roles in a family, and we all should be accepting of the shifts. AMPing UP August 15: Blue Oyster Cult with Robby Krieger of the Doors and Vanilla Fudge

Robby Krieger of the Doors

Blue Oyster Cult Spanning three decades, Blue Öyster Cult has a long and storied history, including hits such as “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper”, “Godzilla” and “Burnin’ for You”. The band has sold over 24 million albums worldwide, including 7 million in the United States alone. The band got its start in the late ’60s on Long Island, New York, as the Soft White Underbelly, but each member had been involved in bands previously in high school and college, before ending up in the “right place at the right time” to create the beginnings of Blue Öyster Cult.

Krieger’s energetic fingerstyle approach to the electric guitar, broad musical tastes, and songwriting helped establish the Doors as a successful rock band in the 1960’s and beyond. As the guitarist, and arguably the band’s secret weapon, he wrote or co-wrote many of the band’s songs, including “Light My Fire”, “Love Me Two Times”, “Touch Me”, and “Love Her Madly”. Krieger has performed alongside band members from Blue Oyster Cult, Oingo Boingo, The Black Crowes, Fuel, The Cult and Gov’t Mule. Rolling Stone has named him one of the 100 best guitarists of all time. Vanilla Fudge Still touring today, Vanilla Fudge retains their dynamic, psychedelic sound that helped them rise to stardom in the 1960’s. The band successfully covered of “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” by The Supremes, warping the song into a slowed-down, hard rocking version that put them in the Top 10. The band has been cited as “one of the few American links between psychedelia and what soon became heavy metal.” In 2007, they went back into the studio to record a cover of In Through the Out Door, the acclaimed Led Zeppelin album. Vanilla Fudge has been featured on hit TV shows such as Mad Men and The Sopranos. Most recently, the band returned to TV with a appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, who called them “a legendary rock ‘n’ roll band who are still as heavy as ever.

PLANTING SEEDS: PART 1 || FEATURE THE POMPANO BEACH AMPHITHEATRE ROARS INTO AUGUST August 28: Lita Ford & Slaughter with Kix and LA Guns Before embarking on an electrifying solo career in the 1980’s, music queen Lita Ford (featured on our cover) was shredding guitar as part of hard rock band, The Runaways. The all-girl band pioneered new modes for women in the male-dominated genre of rock music. With singles such as “Kiss Me Deadly”, “Back to the Cave”, “Close My Eyes Forever”, her 1988 album Lita went certified platinum in the US and gold in Canada. In 2013 Lita was awarded by Guitar Player Magazine, The Certified Guitar Legend Award. Kix Pushing the envelope for over three decades, Kix’s tongue-in-cheek glam rock style has garnered a loyal fan base over the years. Formed in 1977, the foursome quickly built off the success of bands such as Warrant, Poison and Mötley Crüe. In 1988, they released Blow My Fuse, and achieved fame as it went platinum. The power ballad “Don’t Close Your Eyes” peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1989, the band released Blow My Fuse: The Videos, with their videos and behindthe-scenes footage. By the end of the decade, Kix had graduated to arenas, opening for Ratt. Starting off as just a cover band, Kix has since turned into an explosive live act featuring soaring guitars, thick bass lines and blasting drums. L.A. Guns Formed in 1983 in Los Angeles, the band embodies classic Sunset Strip rock ‘n’ roll. This first album, titled “L.A. Guns”, went on to sell 750,000 copies and earned the band its first gold album award. Success gained them a spot touring with bands AC/DC, Iron Maiden and Def Leppard. The band’s sophomore album, Cocked & Loaded went on to become certified gold and eventually platinum. Their singles “Rip and Tear”, “Never Enough” and “The Ballad of Jayne” pushed them into mainstream success. With more than 25 years’ worth of noteworthy material, the band have proved to be true warriors of the 80’s genre.

W Slaughter

THE HIGH SCHOOL GUIDE TO

LUNCH: A REALISTIC APPROACH

S

chool days for most of us mean waking up early, deciding what to wear and making sure we aren’t late for class, or even worse - the bus! However, one cannot forget to pack a nutritious meal for lunch! Forever you have heard mom say to eat your fruits and vegetables but really, you would grab that bag of Doritos and run out the door. Now it’s time to learn how to pack a delicious and nutritious school lunch. Protein is your best friend; it will keep you fuller longer and can be found in a plethora of things! Any bread will work, so when mom badgers you about whole wheat tell her to look at the facts and realize that potato or honey wheat are almost the same nutrition wise. Then grab any lunch meat! Turkey, ham, chicken, roast beef, all of the fresh cold cuts that you can find at your deli. Pair them with a reduced fat cheese and some lettuce and tomato and you just worked in vegetables and dairy! Next you need some snacks to accompany your hearty sandwich; fruits that are easy for the grab n’ go are things like bananas, apples, clementines and grapes - not to mention they

PROTECTING YOUR SKIN DURING THE SUMMER Melanie Hecker, MD, MBA Dermatologist What is the best SPF to prevent skin damage? Most sunscreens with an SPF — or Sun Protection Factor — of 15 or higher do an excellent job of protecting against ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, the rays that burn or darken skin. SPF is a measure of a sunscreen's ability to prevent UVB from damaging the skin. Here's how it works: if it takes 20 minutes for your unprotected skin to start turning red, using SPF 15 theoretically prevents reddening for 15 times longer — roughly five hours. Another way to look at it: SPF 15 filters out approximately 93 percent of all incoming UVB rays. SPF 30 keeps out 97 percent and SPF 50 keeps out 98 percent. These may seem like negligible differences, but if you are lightsensitive, or have a history of skin cancer, it will make a difference. No sunscreen can block all UV rays. For South Florida residents who have high levels of exposure to the sun for 11 months of the year, I recommend daily use of SPF 50 on sun exposed skin. I also recommend sunscreen reapplication after swimming or excess sweating. What are other ways that I can protect my skin? Look for sunscreens in which zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are the main ingredient. They are pure blockers, have no chemicals and fewer allergens, so they tend to work more effectively. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends several ways to avoid sun damage besides the use of sunscreens. One way is to wear sun protective clothing that has been specially designed to filter out harmful ultraviolet rays. Sun protective clothing that has an SPF rating of 100 or above has been found to be extremely effective against the sun's harmful rays. In addition, wearing a hat with a fourinch brim, as opposed to just a baseball cap, protects the scalp, face, upper chest and neck from excess sun exposure.

Pompano Today.com

If you enjoy swimming, walking on the beach or any outdoor exercise, it is important to avoid the peak sun hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Remember, it is not sufficient to only use sunscreen when at the pool or beach, but to make sunscreen application part of your daily routine. The AAD's additional recommendations should be used in conjunction with sunscreen. How prevalent is skin cancer in South Florida? Summer is here, and with it comes additional sun exposure, as residents and tourists flock to the Sunshine State's beaches and pools. With skin cancer rates rising annually across the country, dermatologists encourage daily use of sunscreen and cover-ups. According to the Florida Society of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery, skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States and Florida has the second-highest rate of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. How do I know if I have skin cancer? We stress the importance of routine skin screenings to be sure suspicious lesions are not being overlooked. Many times, people come to my office with concerns about one lesion when it's actually a different lesion that may be the problem. If you have a new lesion that does not look like the other moles on your skin or if a known mole has changed and it is now bleeding, itching, or changing color, it is best to show these lesions to your dermatologist. How often should I be checked for skin cancer? While dermatologists recommend annual skin cancer screening examinations, if you already have had a history of skin cancer, like melanoma, basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma, then the skin cancer total body check should be every three months.

THE CHEVROLET CAMARO

A convertible that begs you to turn up the music

Jay Ghanem of Auto Tech and Body deserves all the credit (blame?) for starting our love affair with convertibles. One delightful winter morning in early 2014, our old reliable finally gave up the ghost in a terrifying manner on the I95 express lanes. Sadly, when she arrived at Auto Tech and Body, we learned that there was no saving her. We also learned, however, that Jay was in possession of a lovely, gold, 2002 Chrysler Sebring convertible that was in need of a new home. Now, we'd never had a convertible; never even considered it, really. We DID, however, remember the "wind in your hair feeling" while passengers in OTHER people's amazing machines. We took the Sebring for a test drive and the rest, as they say, is history. We swore we'd never go back to a boring old hardtop. Driving this convertible inspired us in other ways too - long a fan of news radio, there's something about a convertible that requires music. Suddenly, we were 17 again.

Fast forward to June 2015. The Sebring celebrated its 13th birthday and, well, it was just...time. Time to look for something a bit newer and, of course, something with a soft top. Something with a storied history (see the 1967 Camaro RS SS, © General Motors, above). Something like...a Camaro. In case you haven't noticed, today's Camaros (see the 2015 Camaro SS convertible,© General Motors, left) are (in our biased opinion) inordinately cool; inordinately appointed; inordinately fun. Having the gold Sebring turned out to have been a fabulous warm up to the main event - the yellow Camaro that now sits in our driveway. We could go on and on but really, why bother? Drive one yourself. And we dare you to resist blasting that music, top down, headed down A1A and feeling 17 again.

MOST OF ALL, I RECALL THE MUSIC By Charlotte Sundquist

© giadophoto - Fotolia.com

I went to prom last weekend

Not as a chaperone, but as a guest. Granted it's been 30 years since I attended the last one, but I definitely had more fun this time around. And I got to reminisce about being a teenager again... bonus!

One of my closest friends hosted a 40th birthday party with an 80s prom theme, corsages and mullets required. Since I graduated in 1985, I thought it wouldn't be too difficult to relate. But I refused to wear a white puffy-sleeved dress like I did the first time around. I found myself reaching back into the depths of my brain to come up with details that stood out from my high school years. There were those hours spent in the art room, the time I roller skated through the hallways, and multiple trips to the principal’s office to discuss my questionable fashion choices. But most of all, I recall the music. Everyone relates music to particular moments in their lives, but in our youth, music was particularly important. Sure I listened to all styles when I was growing up, but it's time for me to admit it.

I was obsessed with Adam Ant. That new wave, make-up wearing, skinny, Prince Charming, "Goody Two Shoes" guy. I was obsessed with Adam Ant. That new wave, make-up wearing, skinny, Prince Charming, "Goody Two Shoes" guy.

I had every album that came out. I scoured record stores for posters, and purchased every button that I could find to pin onto my faded jean jacket. I cut out articles from Rolling Stone magazine. MTV had just been launched, and when a video came on I danced around the living room.

One day it was announced in the newspaper that Adam Ant was going to play at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Boston. I begged my mom to let me go, and by some miracle, she said yes. My very first concert...no adults present, just myself and three other high school friends off to the big city! I wasn't even old enough to drive; I relied on my "older" friends to get me there safely.

In an era when the internet and personal computers didn't exist, we experienced moments in real time.

my envious friends. It's been a long time since music had that type of an impact on me, and I'm sure that if I looked hard enough, I can find that shirt and program buried in a box in a closet somewhere. I've never felt like I was getting older. I still refuse to admit it, but flashing back into those high school days this past weekend, and listening to playlists from 30 years ago, brought back some great memories. So thanks to my friend for sharing her 40th birthday, and having the creativity to encourage us to tease our hair and dance to Frankie Goes to Hollywood, if only for one evening. While the music may change, the events we associate with it when we grow up remain no matter what age we are. It's time to break out those headphones again and dance around the living room when no one is watching...

In an era when the internet and personal computers didn't exist, we experienced moments in real time. We were present; cellphones were not available to capture the event. No photography was allowed in the theater - the memories were all we had to last a lifetime. When I close my eyes I can still envision the singer climbing up the speakers on the side of the stage. I was in awe. At the end of the concert, I bought my concert t-shirt and glossy program as mementos, excited to bring them into school the next day to show

LET'S GET STARTED!

June 24, 2015 dawned hot, clear and bright. The tent was in place; fans were blowing. Men in suits retained their air of calm and cool - no, wait, they didn't. They couldn't. It was impossible to contain the palpable excitement in the air as we (and yes, we) finally broke ground on the iconic structure (see page 18) commonly known as the "Pier Parking Garage". What's all the excitement about a garage, you ask? Well! Aside from the breathtaking architecture, this morning marked yet another exciting milestone in our path to the future - a future that's as bright as this sunny day. Pompano Beach, of course, is all about citizen participation (if you don't believe us, drop in on a City Commission meeting, or attend one of the plethora of Citizen Advisory Board sessions). On this day, we all got to participate in the fun as, shovels in hand, we said hello, tomorrow! We can't wait. Photos, clockwise from left: Horacio Danovich (Pompano Beach SIP Engineer) and Elaine Simmons (who should need no introduction to our readers, but just in case, see page 8) and two other beaming guests join in the festivities; everyone was welcome to grab a shovel on this auspicious day. City of Pompano Beach District 1 Commissioner Barry Dockswell keeps the crowd attentive and amused. Broward County Commissioner Chip LaMarca treats the crowd to an animated account of the importance of this groundbreaking.

The Wick Theatre and Costume Museum is gearing up for its stellar season, with musicals galore! Be sure to get your tickets early, and enjoy! For more information, visit the wick.org. A Funny Thing Happened on The Way to the Forum October 1- November 1 Considered by many to be Broadway's greatest farce. A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To the Forum takes comedy back to its roots; combining situations from timetested, 2000 year old comedies of Roman playwright Plautus with the infectious energy of classic vaudeville. Pseudolus, a crafty slave, struggles to win the hand of a beautiful but slow-witted courtesan named Philia, for his young master, Hero, in exchange for freedom. Hello Dolly November 5-December 6 "And what do you do for a living, Mrs. Levi?" asks Ambrose Kemper in the first scene of this most delightful of musical comedies. "Some people paint, some sew... I meddle," replies Dolly. Hello, Dolly! is full of memorable songs including "Put On Your Sunday Clothes", "Ribbons Down My Back," "Before the Parade Passes By," and "Hello, Dolly!" Come along as we follow the adventures of America's most beloved matchmaker! Holiday Spectacular December 10- January 3 The Wick will pull out all the stops with their first annual Holiday Spectacular concert. You'll see and hear many of the best singers and dancers South Florida has to offer as well a number of surprise guest stars accompanied by a live orchestra. The Wick Holiday Spectacular will be the perfect way for you to celebrate the end of a wonderful year and the beginning of a new one! This show is not part of the subscription package. South Pacific January 7- February 14 Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical, South Pacific, is drawn from a Pulitzer-Prize winning novel by James A. Michener. It is considered by most critics to be among the greatest musicals of the 20th century. The original Broadway production won 10 Tony Awards, including all 4 acting awards. Many of its songs went on to have a life of their own outside of the musical, including "Some Enchanted Evening," "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair," and "Bali Hai". Right: Broadway legend and Tony winner Lee Roy Reams starred in La Cage aux Folles at The Wick this past season to rave reviews. This season, he will be starring in Hello Dolly... as Dolly! Photo by Amy Pasquantonio.

About the Wick In April of 2013, Marilynn A. Wick acquired the former Caldwell Theatre Company space in north Boca Raton, resurrecting the vacant property into the Wick Theatre and Costume Museum which opened for business in September with its first production of The Sound of Music. The production was heralded by the press and patrons alike, making the Wick Theatre a formidable contender in professional theatre in South Florida despite its newcomer status. Curtains A Musical Comedy Murder Mystery February 25 - March 27 "Robbin' Hood of the Old West", a bad Western adaptation of the Robin Hood story is reaching its conclusion. The untalented leading lady is a triple threat: she can't sing, act, or dance. To the relief of everyone, she is murdered during her opening night curtain call. The entire company comes under suspicion, and LL Frank Cioffi of the Boston Police Department is called in to solve the homicide. Based on a book by Rupert Holmes with music by Kander and Ebb, this murder mystery is drop dead funny. Nominated for 18 Tony Awards, winning 3. A musical whodunit. I Love a Piano April 14- May 22 I Love a Piano follows the journey of a piano as it moves in and out of American lives from the turn of the century to the present. The story comes to life with over 60 of Irving Berlin's most beloved songs including "Blue Skies", "There's No Business Like Show Business," "Puttin' on the Ritz," "Cheek to Cheek," and of course, "I Love a Piano." Heartbreaking and hilarious, rousing and reflective, I Love a Piano is a fitting tribute to the man Jerome Kern famously said, "had no place in American music - he is American music."

GET SMART || YOUR BUSINESS

WHAT'S YOUR THEME SONG?

And can your customers name that tune?

C

an you believe it? We’re only five months away from a New Year (don’t hate me). When you look at it that way, it puts so many things into perspective, don’t you agree? Ok, well maybe you don’t, but humor me! The one aspect that we all have in common is that we all have a favorite musical or song (for the men) that gets us in the mood. The minute that special song plays or your favorite musical is showing, no matter where you are, you instantly revert back to the first time you heard it, saw it and remember exactly what you were doing (or wearing, yikes). Whether you’re a startup, emerging, or seasoned business there’s always room for improvement. Let’s jump in and start writing your business musical. What’s the theme? Is it going to be a little country, a little rock n roll or some jazz? Are you a Sound of Music or Jersey Boys? Think about the theme of your musical as your brand, product or service. What kind of mood do you want your customers to be in when they see it? How do you want them to feel? As a startup, you are in the perfect place to get creative and really think about what the overall theme of your business will be. For the emerging or seasoned business owners, this may be the time to start thinking about rebranding. The best example I can give you is when you enter Macy’s and you stroll through the makeup section and hear loud, fun and enjoyable music coming from the MAC Cosmetics counter. This is how a company sets the tone/theme for their brand. It’s vibrant, loud and fun and WOMEN love

Pompano Today.com

By Teana McDonald it. Give some thought to what your theme says about your brand. Would it be Lionel Ritchie singing “Easy Like Sunday Morning”, Pharrell Williams singing “Happy” or a little bit of both, like the musical Rent? What’s the chorus? Think of the chorus as the main entree. What is that catchy line or sound that you will have folks singing about? In business terms, why are they coming back for more? What’s the gimmick or the WOW factor and why is it so catchy? Why do women LOVE going to MAC Cosmetics to get their makeup done? It’s because they always have the latest colors, trends and fun hip makeup artists. Think about your shopping habits and why you stick with a certain brand. Is it the quality, trend, price, style or all of the above? Think about your favorite song or musical and why you play it or watch repeatedly. Whatever it is, you have to find that “thing” for your brand. Find your chorus! What’s the final act? The final act is what gets the standing ovation, right? In business terms, why are customers going to give your business a standing ovation? Why would they run and tell their friends all about you? The final act has to be amazing! Do you have a rewards program that is fantastic? Is your customer service good enough to be in the Guinness Book of World Records? Back to my MAC Cosmetics example, they are not a cheap brand of makeup, but they are environmentally conscious, they keep your colors on file so when you travel to any store in the world you’ll be able to refill and shop, and they allow you

to bring in six empty containers which they recycle and in return you get a free lipstick. Yes, I know I should work there. But in my business opinion, those examples are all fabulous final acts. Think about what yours is.

I

f someone asks you to compare your entrepreneurial journey to a musical or a song…what would your answer be? I think mine would be Grease because I (John Travolta) work hard to impress the clients (Olivia Newton John), but in the end the clients (Olivia Newton John) realize that I’m (John Travolta) the best thing since sliced bread or tight black leather pants:-).

THE BROWARD CHILDREN'S CENTER On a bright and sunny summer morning, we visit the Broward Children’s Center and are greeted warmly by Jordan Blanchett, the Center’s energetic development specialist. She is responsible for their digital initiatives, social media campaigns, and website. A four year veteran of BCC, Jordan has an MBA in International Business and a Bachelor’s in Journalism. We ask how an MBA in International Business led to a budding career at this outstanding organization. Jordan just smiles. “I’m happy here…it worked out.” We can hear the staff’s cheerful, kind voices speaking to two boys who are in their wheelchairs, cheerful and ready for their busy day.

this is her first experience at a nonprofit, although she has been volunteering since she was a young child. “I have volunteered for the American Heart Association my whole life,” she tells us, as her brother was born with a heart condition. She is also a staunch supporter of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. She’s been at the Center for four years, and is charged with growing the organization’s partnerships by securing relationships that help the kids and their families, from sponsorships to fundraising events and more. “We do anything we can do to help improve the kids’ quality of life, which is our overarching mission.”

For the uninitiated, the Center is home to some of the most technologically dependent, medically fragile children in the country. In 1971, Marjorie Evans, was a volunteer at Broward Captivated Child Care, which provided services to children with profound disabilities. To this day, she remains the “heart” of the center; she is its current CEO.

The Center also has a large volunteer program. Hundreds of volunteers participate by reading to the kids, helping with landscaping, and much more. “Some of our volunteers become like family to our kids,” Melissa smiles. There are about 30 volunteers who come on a weekly/monthly basis; all volunteers undergo a rigorous screening process. There is, of course, an open-door policy for families, and each child has an individualized care plan. The overall operating budget is over $13 million annually; while insurance and other programs cover certain costs, the Center relies on donations, sponsorships, and services provided gratis by the business community for many of its outstanding initiatives. The Broward Children’s Center’s major annual fundraiser is “Miles for Smiles” in November, which will be held this year on November 21. To learn more, visit bcckids.org/miles-for-smiles. We ask Jordan and Melissa to tell us the one thing they want people to know about the Broward Children’s Center. They tell us that “We’re passionate about the care and quality of life of these children….We want to offer these kids every opportunity to participate in every activity….We serve over one thousand children throughout the community annually….We’re like the bestkept secret right here in Pompano Beach; people may not realize that this could happen to any of us.” Indeed.

In case you missed that, we feel compelled to point it out again: 1971. Which, if you’re counting, was 44 years ago. It’s hard to imagine how many lives Marjorie has touched in her selfless quest.

This passion is clear throughout our visit, from the nurses to the doctors to the volunteers to the custodial staff. 200 SE 19th Street is considered the “heart” of the facility, and it’s clear to us that everyone we see has their heart in what they do.

The Center provides a plethora of services to children and young adults and their families, from medical case management to respite care and a host of other programs. From its small beginnings, the Broward Children’s Center has grown to a large staff in 11 different buildings, ten of which are in Pompano. In addition to the facility we visited, there are two other residential facilities which are group homes for those ages 21 and up. In 1992, Broward Children’s Center, Inc. became licensed by the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) as the first freestanding pediatric skilled nursing facility in the Southeast United States. Today many, but not all, of the Broward Children’s Center’s charges are on ventilators, largely due to the tireless efforts of Marjorie Evans. In March 2013, BCC’s “Center for Innovative Technology” opened and was awarded unique project funding from the State to implant newly injured ventilator patients with a diaphragmatic pacing system (DPS), replacing the ventilator. This Center’s population centers on trauma survivors; it provides three months of intensive caregiver training. Surprisingly, 45% of the Center’s younger set were born typical; most of these children are trauma survivors. The other 55% were born with various conditions. Soon, we are joined by Melissa Lane, the Center’s Development and Corporate Relations Manager. While Melissa has long experience in the business world,

We continue on our tour through bright, cheery hallways; there are two kids per room. For visiting families, we learn that the new Pompano Beach Marriott has been “amazing – they host one of our families for two - three nights each month….We’ve had kids airlifted from California. Because we are so advanced, we’ve served kids and families from throughout the nation.” All of the children, regardless of their particular condition, participate in onand off-site recreational activities. One of the more interesting on-site activities is “Personal Ponies”, an organization that brings ponies into the facility each

A RAY OF LIGHT AND HOPE IN POMPANO BEACH month. “We partner with anyone who’s willing to partner with us to help the kids,” says Melissa. Jordan points with pride to their calendar, which is chock full of activities including yoga, cooking, horticulture and much, much more; BCC recently participated in Special Olympics for the first time. The Center’s occupational therapist often brings her 130 pound Bernese Mountain Dog in to work with her; the “pup”, so to speak, is a therapy dog. The “Fantastic Fun Factory” comes in every month and hosts a birthday party.

festive gardening table with pinwheels, marigolds and more. In the playroom, staff consulted with a therapist to ensure everything in the room is of maximum therapeutic value.

doctor called Ms. Evans; he had spinal muscular atrophy and was expected to live six to twelvemonths. Marjorie’s response was “We’ll see about that.” Buddy, now a Blanche Ely High School graduate, became the first ventilator-assisted individual to graduate from a public high school in Florida. Buddy just celebrated his 34th birthday, and has written and published two books.

The Center also includes a Children’s Committee, on which local kids serve as ambassadors for the Center. They advocate for kindness and acceptance among their peers; last year, the committee ensured that every child received a gift for the holidays. In those cases, BCC transports and stays with the child. There are three classrooms for those needing to be schooled in-house. They are, like the rest of the facility, bright, cheery and active. We meet “Princess Marrian”, a smiling young girl with long blond hair and a beautiful bright pink dress (pink is Marion’s favorite color). As we exit Marion’s room and turn the corner, we reach a section of the building that has high, arched ceilings. Melissa tells us about the time a contractor came to visit to see how he could help. “I’m giving him the tour, and he’s looking around, paying no attention to me, and I thought, ‘Oh, he isn’t interested at all.’ Then he turned to me and said, ‘Was this ever a church?’ It turns out it was. His response was, ‘How perfect…can you imagine how many prayers are held in these walls?’” Indeed. Journalistic objectivity aside, we find that we need just a moment to compose ourselves before continuing. We are treated to a dizzying array of high tech, all of which serves to provide maximum benefit to the Center’s population. For the outdoor play area, a master carpenter came in and built ADA-compliant gardening tables. There’s also a wheelchair swing, adaptive bikes, and one very

Currently, the Broward Children’s Center is looking to start a jobs training program; this is an important initiative that will require significant funding. This month, as you’re getting your kids ready for school and bemoaning the cost of sneakers, take a moment and think about Buddy, and Marion, and all of the young people at the Broward Children’s Center. There are many ways that each and every one of us can help. To learn more, visit bcckids.org/ ways-to-help.

We are treated to a brief tour of one of the Young Adult group homes. We learn about Buddy, who came to the Center at the age of six, when a local

SPECIAL FEATURE: COLLEGE

the essential 7

by Margaux Cutler

I

Margaux Cutler is a student at Florida State University who is interning with Pompano Today this summer.

’s back to school season! For many of you, you will be venturing off into your first year of college- how exciting! As overwhelmed and antsy as you might be, I’m here to remind you of the top SEVEN essentials to pack with you!

SEVEN – RAIN APPAREL! If you are like me, and most Floridians, I am sure you will be attending an in-state College or University. With that, one can always expect the occasional - or daily – thunderstorm, making rain boots, rain coats, umbrellas, and anything else waterproof a must! Sorry boys, let me tell you firsthand that your “Sperry boat shoes” do not count in this department- unless you’re okay with letting them air dry for the next 48 hours.

FOUR— FIRST AID KIT Along with meds, there’s a good chance that either you, or a friend, will at some point need this. After all ladies, those heels are high and make for quite the tumble after a long night of dancing and partying. As for you boys, we know you like to get down and dirty with your sports, but what will you do if that late night football-sesh leaves you all cut up? Your school wellness center will probably be closed, and you will be thankful you remembered a first aid kit.

THREE— STORAGE BIN/STEP STOOL In case you aren’t exactly the tallest person to reach your mountain high bed these come in handy; also, it helps if it has drawers, just to be a tad more organized. We know those midnight cravings are serious when you can’t find the right chocolate because it is mixed in with your chips; the last thing we want is our freshman to be hangry (hungry and angry).

#3 Orga - You! ni and n zed, taller , ot ha ngry !

SIX – BRITA WATER BOTTLE OR PITCHER This is convenient, easy and beats running to the water fountain for some lukewarm metallic tasting water, especially when you are on the go between classes and don’t have time to pick up a nice cold Dasani. FIVE— MEDICINES The phrase “I never get sick” will leave your vocabulary because let me tell you, in college everyone GETS SICK! So you will need allergy, cold, pain, sore throat and any other syrup or pill under the “Cold and Flu” aisle. Also if you are moving to an area away from home, allergies you didn’t even know about might appear. So, always better safe than stuffy nosed and miserable.

TWO – MULTIPLE OUTLET POWER STRIP/ SURGE PROTECTOR Clearly the designer of dorms had a brain fart when assuming one outlet per person would be sufficient. So save yourself the inevitable Home Depot trip and pack it now!

ONE— SPIRIT WEAR!

No matter what school you go to, you MUST have school spirit apparel! School logos, colors and mascots will never go out of style so pick up anything with these. Plus you need an outfit for game days…. and possibly a matching bag, shoes and socks!
