Who let the dog...in?

7 Lessons Learned From Bringing My Dog to School

©Gstudio Group - Fotolia.com

By Sonya terBorg

W

e have a “No Dogs Allowed” policy at my school, which is understandable given the complexity of mixing animals with little people and the unpredictable nature of both. I have a dog whom I adore. One of our fifth graders was doing a project on the impact of animals on humans. Can you see where my brain immediately went? After seeking all the appropriate permissions, Abby (the best dog in the world) was allowed to start school! I couldn’t have been more proud – of both Abby (the wonder dog) and my school for having the courage to re-evaluate their decision and make an exception in the best interests of the students. The student and I had done a lot of reading about other schools in which dogs were allowed, and in fact welcomed, at school. The premise of Abby joining us in the classroom was to see the impact – positive or negative – first hand. While I was pretty confident it would be awesome (our dog being the best dog in the world and all) I was not prepared for…..well, the things I had not anticipated, the learning beyond my expectations. I had imagined… • kids would be excited • class would develop sense of responsibility • we would bond over having something special/different to other classes • Abby would be ‘used’ as a reward, point of relaxation or de-stress and all out fun In reality… Most of what I anticipated, actually happened. What I hadn’t imagined was that bringing Abby to school would actually open up relationships with kids that previously had been a little distant to me. I am one of two fifth grade teachers and our combined ‘class’ of 28 kids (13 in one, 15 in another) do almost everything together. Kids from ‘the other class’ that to me had appeared a little disinterested and didn’t really go out of their way to engage in conversation, were now asking me questions about their work, talking to me about Abby, telling me about their own pets, looking for ways to help out with Abby and telling me how much they loved having her at school. These were not ‘disruptive’ or ‘unengaged’ students prior to her arrival, but there was definitely a void in the connection between us. When they met Abby and saw how much I loved her, an inroad was established and conversations flourished. We connected. As a teacher, I felt like I had a better understanding of these kids, I saw them in a different light – as they did me – and I ended up learning a lot about, with and from them in the last few weeks of the year. On the last day of school, I was reminded that Abby would not be allowed back next year. I was not surprised – this was a one off project – but I was disappointed. Disappointed for me that I would have to leave my gorgeous dog at home each day,

10 Pompano Today August 2014

disappointed for my kids next year that they won’t get the same experience this year’s class had, disappointed for me (again!) that I wouldn’t be able to share this side of me, this passion, with my incoming class, and disappointed for my school that they were missing the opportunity to make school different. Our school used to allow dogs at school but over time (before I came here) it seemed to get out of hand with dogs coming that were less than friendly and ultimately resulting in the ban on dogs. I knew Abby at school was an exception to the rule and I was super grateful for that, but given that Abby will probably not (never say never!) be allowed back, the thought that is running through my head is: How can I make sure to connect with all students in my class on SOME level next year? I think the answer is to let them bring “their Abby” to school. Their passion. The love of their life. The ‘thing’ that makes the school day go by in a blur and learning seem like a walk in the park. I want them to ‘bring on the weird’ – that love for MineCraft, the ability to knit, the singing voice that is usually reserved for the shower or the bedroom, the doodles, the tech tools, the art skills, the athletic prowess, the philanthropy, the passion for photography, reading, books, art, music, drawing, politics, cooking, baking, sewing, running, jumping, throwing, cars, plane, boats, hot air balloons, hairstyles or even fingernails! Whatever it is, I want them to bring it to school. We encourage this in the younger grades (who doesn’t remember ‘Show and Tell’) so why not in fifth grade? My 7 ‘takeaways’ from The Abby Project: Regardless of Abby being at school or not, I want the spirit of The Abby Project to live on. Here is how I am going to make that happen: • Start every day with enthusiasm • Wag your tail, always • Show you care • Be supportive • Pay attention • Bark less, listen more • End each day with the wind in your ears! I enjoy learning more about the challenges and triumphs in education and believe in sharing ideas in order to deepen understanding. This is the new home for my new blog on innovation in education. KEEPING COOL WHILE SHOPPING FOR BACK TO SCHOOL

Repeat after us: I will survive this, and you will, too.

B

By Elaine Simmons efore you realize it, the beginning of the school year will be upon us with its usual disputes over your teen's style of dress. Each generation has their own style and it can be hard for teens to understand parental concerns about clothing…which makes this a major event.

Here are seven steps on how to disagree with your teen's style of dress: Step One: Sit down and think about what bothers you about the way your teen is dressing. Determine if you feel that they are dressing in a way that makes them appear too mature or whether you're concerned that the way they dress will foster negative, preconceived notions. You may feel that your teen dresses as they do out of rebellion or that their clothes are inappropriately sexy or thuggish. Step Two: When you and your teen are both relaxed and in a friendly mood, gently broach the subject of clothes. Ask them what the other teens are wearing. Tell them what the clothing trends were in your day and ask them what the new styles of clothes are like now. As they talk, make mental notes about what they say. For instance, they may say that some kids are "preps" because they dress a particular way or some kids are "emos" because they dress a certain way. Let the conversation end on a positive note and do not mention your dislike of their style of dress. Step Three: Wait for a time when you and your teen are together and there is no underlying stress. Tell them you want to talk with them about their clothing choices. Talk to them in a nonjudgmental way. Talk to them like you would any other young adult and be honest and open. Tell your teen how you feel about their style of dress. Tell them what your concerns are and try to start sentences with "I" instead of "you." Step Four: Explain the preconceived notions people have of others based on how they dress. You can mention how they said

Having a constructive disagreement about your teen's style of dress, in 7 easy steps

About the Author Elaine Simmons is an Image, Etiquette and Body Language Consultant, offering image consulting services to individuals and groups.

"so and so" was a jock or emo because they wore this or that. Tell them that others are looking at them the same way. Tell them that there could be ramifications because of the way they dress and explain what they are. Step Five: Next, give your teen time to say what they want to say without interrupting. When it's your turn to speak again, go back over your concerns. Step Six: Tell them that you both can agree to disagree, but you would like to find a middle ground to make you both happy. Ask them to give some suggestions on how you can work it out together. What areas are they willing to adjust? Next, tell them what areas you are willing to overlook. Step Seven: Finally, tell them what you expect of them. Be very specific. Tell them that any clothing you don't think is acceptable will be confiscated and replaced with something that you both can agree on. Be prepared to reinforce any punishments you laid out if your teen breaks the new clothing rules.

 1. Think about what bothers you 2. Ask them what others are wearing 3. Be honest and open 4. Talk about preconceived notions 5. Give your teen time to talk without interruption 6. Collaborate to find a middle ground 7. Set clear and specific rules and consequences, and follow through! Pompano Today.com

Roast Chicken: Bacon! Butter! Garlic! And more! Ingredients • • • • • • •

1 (5 to 6-pound) roasting chicken Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper 1 large bunch fresh thyme 4 lemons 3 heads garlic, cut in 1/2 crosswise 2 tablespoons butter, melted

• • • • •

1/2 pound sliced bacon 1 cup white wine 1/2 cup chicken stock White Garlic Balsamic* Meyer Lemon Olive Oil*

*Available at the Heart of the Gourmet

Directions • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. • Remove the chicken giblets. Rinse the chicken inside and out. Remove any excess fat and leftover pinfeathers and pat the outside dry. Place the chicken in a large roasting pan. Liberally salt and pepper the inside of the chicken. Stuff the cavity with the thyme, reserving enough thyme to garnish the chicken dish, 1 lemon, halved, and 2 halves of the garlic. Brush the outside of the chicken with the butter and sprinkle again with salt and pepper. Tie the legs together with kitchen string and tuck the wing tips under the body of the chicken. Cut 2 of the lemons in quarters and scatter the quarters and remaining garlic around the chicken. Lay the bacon slices over the chicken to cover. • Roast the chicken for 1 hour. Remove the bacon slices from the top of the chicken and set aside. Continue roasting the chicken for an additional 1/2 hour, or until the juices run clear when you cut between a leg and thigh. Remove to a platter and cover with aluminum foil while you prepare the gravy. • • Remove all but 2 tablespoons of the fat from the bottom of the pan. Add the wine and chicken stock and bring it to a boil. Reduce the heat, and simmer for 5 minutes, or until reduced by half. • • Slice the chicken on a platter. Garnish the chicken platter with the bacon slices, roasted garlic, reserved thyme and 1 lemon, sliced. • • Drizzle 1 tablespoon of White Garlic Balsamic and 1 teaspoon of Meyer Lemon Olive Oil over chicken. Serve with the gravy.

THE RIGHT START

These two business owners are shining examples of childcare done well By Dawne Richards

R

ecently, we were honored to spend time with two amazing women. They are the women who go about their businesses (in this case, childcare) sort of unnoticed by most of us (at least, those of us without young children). Arguably, though, they're doing the most important work on earth - shaping the future. Read on to hear their stories, and then say a great big "thanks".

Business: Gentle Hugz Preschool and Childcare Owner: Angela Fogle Quote: "We're never too busy to stop and talk with parents." Angela Fogle has always been interested in taking care of children. She’s worked with kids for a long time, and in fact drove a school bus for years (Ed. note: look up “unsung hero” in the dictionary, and we’re confident you’ll find a picture of a school bus driver). It’s a pretty big leap, of course, to go from school bus driver to childcare center owner and operator. What’s even more remarkable is that Angela did this “on a whim.” Wow! Back in 2005, she opened the doors of her home to ten children. Fast forward to now, where she runs Gentle Hugz Preschool and Childcare, which is currently at its 44-child (and a waiting list!) capacity.

18 Pompano Today August 2014

Angela met a woman who connected her to the Pompano Beach CRA Business Resource Center and took the classes offered. She secured a loan via the Microenterprise Business Loan Fund Program run by International Enterprise Development. This loan, Angela recalls, “helped a great deal.” It did, in fact, provide her with the opportunity to open the current Gentle Hugz facility (which celebrated its first anniversary on July 31) and more than quadruple the number of children she serves. Gentle Hugz employs six people, and opens at 4:45 am. Why so early, we ask? Angela smiles. “When I was a bus driver, I had to be at work so early… I opened at that time for the bus drivers.” Angela has two daughters, 25 and 21 – “they are major assets,” she says. Both work with her at Gentle Hugz. A Pompano native (in fact, her parents were born here too), Angela is an alumnus of Sanders Park Elementary, Margate Middle, and Coconut Creek High School. She is a big believer in giving back to the community. “I might not have a lot, but I give what I can.” She’s got high praise for the Center’s Andy Cherenfant, its loan director. He’s been such a mentor, she tells us. “I can go to him with any questions or concerns. His door is always open.” Gentle Hugz serves children from newborns to 12 year olds. The center provides breakfast, lunch and snacks, and has an afterschool program (they pick up at school) and a summer camp as well. They also offer tutoring by a certified teacher. What’s the one thing Angela wants parents to know? “We have an open door policy for parents. We’re never too busy to stop and talk with them.”

Business: Cozey Care Academy Owner: Laretha Jordan Quote: "We take pride in instilling hope in our children." Laretha Jordan runs the Cozey Care Academy in Pompano Beach. We caught up with Laretha and her daughter, Jessica Coutain, on a bright weekday morning. What got Laretha interested in childcare? “I’ve always had a houseful of children. When I had my first grandson (now nine), I really wanted to be close with him and I figured, what better way? …. I always had a helping spirit.” Cozey Care Academy is based in Laretha’s home, and they are currently looking to expand because “we’ve outgrown our home!” The center serves 21 children in two shifts, and is open 24/7/365. Really. Its three employees care for children from the ages of newborn to 13. What’s her favorite age, we ask, and are rewarded with a big smile. “Zero to three, because they spend quite a bit of time with me…I’m more like family than a teacher. I get to see their ‘firsts,’ and the things that I get to do with them, they will carry with them a long way.” In addition, Laretha’s daughter, Jessica, lets us know that Cozey Care caters to single moms. “We work with parents to accommodate their schedules, so they can get to work to better themselves.”

“Parents notice that the kids are different with us,” says Laretha. We’ll have a parent say, “How did you get them to behave so well?” We ask Laretha to share her thoughts about the Business Resource Center and IED, and are treated to another thousand-watt smile. “They are awesome!” she exclaims. “They’re like another family! You see, there are a lot of people who say they’re there to help, but they are really there to help. They are really committed to helping, to making sure you get what you need – and I just like them all!” Laretha’s passion for children is evident, and we suspected it may have started long before she became a grandmother. We asked her to share a little bit more about her background and what follows is, well, simply remarkable. “I’ve actually been raising children since I was, like, 12!” Pardon? “I had a pretty rough life…no mommy, no daddy. I’ve been on my own since I was 12; I was the oldest of five…one sister and three brothers. We just had to grow up fast. It was just us.”

Advice from the Pros: Choosing the right childcare What we learned from Angela Fogle and Laretha Jordan

O 1. Safety is always, always first. 2. Certified teachers are always a plus.

O

3. No open door policy? No, thanks.

want [my siblings] in the system.” This ingrained desire to take care of people manifests itself on Thanksgiving, too, when the family regularly hosts about 60 (!) people. Hard to imagine, yes? We, of course, are more familiar with 12 year olds who are incapable of locating their shoes. This is – well, “remarkable” does not begin to describe it. In addition, Laretha married and was widowed at the age of 30. The relationship was not picture-perfect, and she eventually remarried, only to find herself in another difficult relationship. Now divorced, she says, “I won’t give up!” She is, in fact, looking into starting a few other businesses, both on her own and with her family. These include potentially opening a boutique, or maybe an event planning company. And – oh! They just bought a small lawn service. Through it all, she was determined to ensure that her five children got a good start in life, and indeed they have. Of the three girls and two boys, one has a B.A. in Accounting; one is in college; one has her Associates’ degree (“we’re trying to get her to go back for her bachelor’s”, Laretha notes); another will have her Bachelor’s degree in August. Jessica, in fact, majored in Mental Health Counseling at Nova, and is a year away from her doctorate. Jessica also writes children’s books (in between PhD. work. There are no words). “We’re pretty daring girls,” she smiles. Indeed! “BCC calls us ‘The Huxtables,’” Laretha laughs. “I will go and sit in my adult children’s classes.” Say again??? Now, we’re sure you’re envisioning the much-discussed “helicopter parent.” We’d guess, however, that Laretha more closely resembles the “Lethal Weapon” parent. And that’s a good thing! Laretha just received her Bachelor’s degree, by the way. She has an Associates’ degree in Early Childhood Education, an Associates’ in Social Work, and a Bachelor’s in Business. And – oh - she starts an MBA program in the fall. Absolutely remarkable. What should parents look for in a childcare center? “Safety,” Laretha says, without hesitation. “And then, just – a clean environment….Our two year olds are actually ready for school! We go outside the box – we teach them banking, the importance of looking people in the eye, how to shake hands. We specialize in kids with behavior issues.” Jessica adds, “We take pride in instilling hope in our children.”

4. Cleanliness is next to...well, you know. 5. A child who is excited to arrive and sorry to leave is a happy child. 6. Be sure the hours work for you.

At this point, we’re still struggling to understand “raising children since the age of 12” and “just us.” We ask Laretha to elaborate. Oh my. Indeed, at the age of 12, Laretha looked around one day and realized she would need to immediately become mother, father, and breadwinner, overnight. How did she do it? “I learned to write like my mom and dress up to look like a mom,” she recalls. “At 13, I got a job – I told them I was 16. I had to work to feed us! We all slept in one big bed in a rooming house…I didn’t

coughing and sneezing, cover your mouth and wash your hands thoroughly. The best way to prevent the flu is to get the flu shot. If you start to feel symptoms of the flu, such as sneezing, stuffy head, fever or excessive fatigue, you should visit your physician. If the symptoms are severe, go to your nearest ED.

Can children come to the ED? The ED is open 24 hours and children can be treated at any time by an experienced board certified emergency room physician. Pediatricians are available from 4 p.m. to midnight daily.

About Dr. Jerry Brooks: Jerry T. Brooks, MD, FACEP is board certified in emergency medicine and is the medical director of BHN’s emergency services.

What are the emergency room hours? We are here and ready to attend to every patient 24/7, 365 days a year. Summer is here. What are some tips to stay safe? Anytime you are going to spend time outdoors, make sure to wear sunscreen daily and limit direct sun exposure. Always drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration and be careful while partaking in typical summer activities, especially those involving swimming. Does the flu linger into summertime? Some consider autumn to be the only ‘flu time.’ That, unfortunately, is untrue. With many people spending time in air conditioned spaces and then being outside in the excessive heat, they may not wear proper attire and are therefore susceptible to flus and colds during summer as well. How can I avoid and prevent the flu? The flu is contagious and is transmitted through direct contact, so good hygiene habits will go a long way to prevent catching it. When

EMERGENCY! PREPAREDNESS MEANS PEACE OF MIND By Jay Ghanem

It is “Back to School time” and many of us are eager and excited to send our kids back to school or away to college! Many of the high school and college kids are driving to/from school these days. One of the main things we need to think of is to have an emergency preparedness plan in case of a mechanical breakdown. We need to discuss it with our kids and supply them with all the tools. A roadside emergency can happen at any time, whether your car is new or old. A range of problems can cause it, from a flat tire, dead battery to running out of fuel. Being prepared with a basic emergency kit can increase your safety, reduce stress, and help you get back on the road safely. Even if you have roadside-assistance coverage or an automobile-club membership with roadside assistance such as AAA, you may have to wait on the side of the road for an hour or more before help arrives. That's why we recommend that drivers carry certain items in their vehicle. Be sure to stock your emergency kit before all of the back to school busy days start; having this kit in your car will bring you peace of mind that you (and any other drivers in your family) are road ready and safe.

© Dudarev Mikhail - Fotolia.com

An emergency kit (preferably a hard case) should have the following: • • • • • • • •

plastic

A booster cable (in case of a dead battery) An air compressor or a "fix-a-flat" can (in case of a flat tire) A reflective warning triangle (in case you are stranded on the side of the street and it - alerts drivers / incoming traffic) 10 pieces automotive fuses (incase you have a burned fuse/ you can replace it manually) First aid kit (5 pieces band aid, alcohol swabs, antibiotic cream, 2 pairs of medical graded gloves, eye drops) Emergency lamp/ flash light with strobe function (check the batteries on a regular basis) Fire Extinguisher (in case of car overheating/ fire) Make sure you have a cell phone in case of emergency to call 911 and have a AAA or insurance card that has a towing or basic mechanical assistance capability.

LIGHTEN UP!

This month, Charlotte shares how termites inspired her to embark on her own "back to school" campaign to declutter, de-stock, and generally, de-emphasize the need for all that "stuff."

I

t's back to school time once again! While it's been a "few" years since I graduated, I can still remember that exciting feeling of all things new. New clothes, new pencils, new notepads and binders. New teachers, new friends, new subjects to learn...... well, you get the idea. So I started thinking, what situation had recently provided me an opportunity to revisit that fresh outlook that came with the end of the summer?

The answer? Termites. Yep, those flying little pests that South Florida homeowners love to hate decided the Florida room was a fabulous place to take up residence. And they didn't even have the courtesy to ask me. After the initial moment of denial, and the pest control inspector's reassurance that the roof wouldn't cave in overnight, the arduous process of prepping the home for tenting began. Three jars of mayonnaise, five bottles of salad dressing, and seven cans of beans later; a new concern that I may have the potential to be a food hoarder crept into my head. While packing mountains of supplies into boxes, a light bulb went off. It's time to learn to become a minimalist! I downloaded books about downsizing on my Kindle, and watched the movie Tiny: The Art of Living Small. While loading the dog into the car, visions of building a 200 square foot, termite-free home danced in my head. All unnecessary worldly belongings would go to Goodwill. My poodle Casey and I headed off to a rented beach hotel for our forced three day mini "stay-cation" where I would take future action steps.

The hotel was great! No garage begging to be cleaned, no pile of ironing nagging at me, and nary a junk drawer to be found. I looked for a bottle opener, and presto, there it was. This lovely getaway, coupled with my recent reading choices, was further motivation to get home and purge, purge, purge! Flash forward to my arrival back to my now termite-free house. Time to throw open all the windows, air out the house, and restock the kitchen. This is better than spring cleaning! But first, let's just tackle that junk drawer. I set up two empty boxes, one for items that no one could possibly want, and the other to give away. Plastic containers that had somehow mysteriously lost their lids were tossed. Multiple spatulas? They landed in the donation pile. I pondered why I needed 25 steak knives in my life. And then it was time to part ways with all those doo-dads and gadgets that at one time had convinced me they could transform me into a mini Julia Childs. I was on a roll. It's now been a month since the initial whirlwind downsizing phase. For the moment, that plan for a 200 square foot home has been put on the back burner. The wood eating pests are gone, so it only makes sense to inhabit the space a bit longer, right? I'm happy to report that the efforts to de-clutter and minimize are still going strong. My weight hasn't changed, but recently I'm feeling much lighter.

THEN: I-SPY BASEBALL!

In December, 1956, the Pompano Beach City Commission allocated $25,000 to build a baseball stadium. In less than four months, the ball field was completed in what is now Community Park. A capacity crowd of about 3,000 people attended the dedication ceremonies on March 23, 1957, which featured an exhibition game between the minor league Buffalo Bison and the Kansas City Athletics. Mayor Edwin Haynie threw out the first pitch. Given the name "Memorial Stadium," it served as a spring training site for the Washington Senators and Texas Rangers.

Named by the Huffington Post as a “performing artist to keep your eyes on”, Award-Winning songstress DOREEN TAYLOR was honorably chosen by the nation’s leading park advocacy organization, the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA), to write and produce an inspiring song to benefit the NPCA’s work protecting and enhancing America’s national parks, aptly named “Colors of the USA.” Doreen first premiered “Colors of the USA” at The Salute to the Parks Gala, one of the nation’s largest and most influential gatherings in Washington DC, in April and the song is now available for download at http://www.colorsoftheusa.org/, with 50% of all proceeds directly supporting the NPCA. This anthem has been celebrated by some of America’s top political leaders including Congressmen Chris Collins (New York's 27th Congressional district) and Frank Alo LoBiondo (New Jersey's 2nd Congressional district).

When did you know without any doubt that you wanted to sing/perform? I always have had music in my life and I have always loved being able to create, but I really didn’t know without a doubt that music was the career path I wanted to pursue. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to do it for a living, it was more that I was uncertain that I could actually make a living doing it. Being raised in a rural farm town in a very modest, one-income home with a father who was a teacher and a mother who was a homemaker, I really didn’t grow up in the perfect environment to create the opportunity to become a jet-setting performer. There was a point when I was around 16 when I just knew that the love of music in my heart overshadowed any doubt that I had Photo courtesy Bobby Quillard and at that very moment I dedicated my entire life to trying to make the best music I possibly could. I never really set out to be “famous” or a “celebrity” (I find both those terms highly subjective and almost negative at times). I just wanted to do what I loved and do the best I could with the gifts that God had given me. Since that day, I have never looked back and it was the best decision I have ever made. Sure, this industry is brutal and almost barbaric at times, but my love and passion for what I create inside of me overrides all that and just gets me through. What inspires you to perform? One word…passion. My passion for music; my passion for creating; my passion to inspire others and my passion to just push my boundaries to the wall

and then break through those walls inspires me to be a performer and give everything I have to the audience on that stage. There is no greater high than having a packed theater cheering your name and singing along to all your songs. At that moment, I am invincible. When did you realize you had reached your goals as an entertainer? I have not reached that point yet. I am not sure if I ever will. Each and every day I am pushing myself to create something new and fresh and make sure that I am always bringing the best I can to everything I touch. I have accomplished truly amazing things in my career, things that most artists can only imagine, but I have not even gotten close to where I would like to be. I can be happy for the accomplishments I have achieved, but if I ever get to the point where I feel like I have realized my dreams- it is time to do something else with my life. It is just like learning. We can never learn everything and I will never stop striving to learn new things. What was your favorite performance to date and why? I have had several tent pole performances, but I think the most memorable on a much deeper personal level was the world premiere performance of my new song “Colors of the USA” benefiting the National Parks Conservation Association. It was selected to be unveiled at the ‘Salute to the Parks Gala’ at the Newseum in Washington DC April 9th and I performed my song for the first time to a standing ovation from dignitaries, politicians, and true advocates and lovers of the National Parks. Subsequently, “Colors of the USA” was honorably named the ‘Official Song of the National Parks Conservation Association’. I really don’t think anything I have ever done up to this point exemplified my passion as not only a performer, but as a producer and a songwriter. “Colors of the USA” is my heart and soul and to be able to share that on such an amazing stage was truly surreal.

What do you enjoy most about your career? I think one of the most amazing things I have been able to accomplish through my career is the fact that I can use my music and my name to help charitable organizations and help “pay it forward’. Early in my career, I decided to give as much as I could to help others. I believe I have been blessed with the success that I have had and it is my mission to bless others with that success. In my 2013/14 “Magic” National Tour in support of my solo debut album “Magic”, each and every show was tied to a charity and we donated 100% of the net proceeds from each show to a local charity to help the community of the city we were playing in. It was a very unusual thing for an artist to do, but it was something that I felt very strongly about and I wouldn’t have done it any other way. I believe strongly in karma and you can never do too much to help others. Our interview with Doreen Taylor continues online. Visit pompanotoday.com for more.

here did the summer go? Can you believe that there are only five months left until 2015 (yep, I said it!)? Let’s not focus on the fact that the kids are going back to school, the long weeks at the beach are over, or the fact that we actually have to get back into the full time groove of running a business. Summer is a time to relax, reflect and rejuvenate. Now that we’ve had several months to do that, let’s talk about how we’re going to make some amazing things happen in our businesses for the next five months! Being an entrepreneur is not a sprint, it’s a marathon! Are you ready to finish this race on top? Dress the part! • There are rules to running a marathon. You have to ‘dress the part.’ No cotton t-shirts, no purses and you must wear running shoes. These rules are basic but extremely important to the success of finishing the race. Are you dressing the part in your business? • Does your website, business card and online image reflect the type of clients that you’d like to work with? If your marketing looks like your teenage daughter did it, then it’s time to make a change. • When you’re networking and connecting in the community, have you figured out how to tell others what you do? I know it sounds crazy but there are people that I’ve known for years and I still have no idea what they do for a living. Lock down that ‘elevator pitch’ and make it very simple for others to understand. For example, I don’t say, “My name is Teana and I do social media and public relations.” I say, “My goal is to help businesses expand their online marketing through Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, with an extra boost of offline marketing through TV, print, speaking and radio.” • Are you physically dressing the part? How do you present yourself when you show up for client meetings or networking meetings? We tend to dress extremely casually here in South Florida but as a business owner you must step it up. Dress for the client(s) that you would like to land.

See success! The finish line is close, but yet so far in your mind - but if you see it, you’ll cross it. See your business as successful, as a resource and as something that you’re proud of: • Positive mental images of growth in all the areas of your business are key • There’s still time to be more successful than you already are. Give yourself that extra push to stand out and do something different. • You’ve made it this far, right? There’s no way in the last five months of the year you’re going to stop now. Keep going and finish off with a great year! • Stay positive, focused and on the path to cross that finish line. We’re at the final stretch! When you’re running any race, the goal is the finish line. During the race you’re made aware how many miles you have left during the trail (which is a good thing). You’re almost at the finish line now, so what can you do to gain some more momentum to cross that line? This IS still your year and you have five solid months to: • • • • •

Land that big contract from the client that you thought you could never get Get that office space that you’ve been dreaming of Hire that freelance employee to help grow your business Submit you or your business for that award you hear about each year Focus on the connections that will guarantee growth in your business

No matter where you are in business there’s always time to make a shift and finish what you’ve started. Set the goals and start reaching them! Yes, it’s that simple. Don’t worry about how you’re going to finish the race or why you signed up in the first place – just cross the finish line!
