Pomeranians by Mrs. Parker It is not possible to name any date with certainty when Pomeranians were first introduced into England. They first began to be noticed as show dogs in 1870 when three made their first appearance at the Kennel Club Show. Since that time it is extraordinary the changes that have taken place in the breed, more especially in the matter of size and colour. As a toy dog we have proofs that the Pomeranian was established on the Continent as long ago as the thirteenth century. He can be seen in illuminated manuscripts of the time, standing against a female figure and he looks very much the same as a Pom. of today of about five pounds in weight. he is also carved on stone in the catacombs in Rome, which city, according to old manuscripts, was the scene of his origin. Small dogs of the same type are still common in Italy where they are known as Lupinos, but they have longer bodies and ears and flatter, softer coats than the real Pomeranian. It is more probable that our present-day Poms. are the result of careful breeding from the large breed of dogs imported from the Continent, where they were used as shepherd and watch dogs. Certain it is that all the early Poms. shown were large, weighing anything up to twenty pounds, or even thirty pounds. It was not until 1891, when the Pomeranian Club was founded by Mr Theo Marples and a few other enthusiasts, that real progress was made in the breed. In 1896 a resolution was passed limiting the weight to twenty pounds, but the usual weight of show specimens at the time was about ten pounds. The colours were usually black or white. the first small dog to make a sensation in the show ring was Miss de Pass' brown Champion Tina which weighed about five pounds and was unbeaten in her day. About this time breeders appear t have devoted their efforts to produce Poms. of small size with the result that for a time much of their type was lost and the little ones shown were spoilt by round apple-head, full eyes, short, thick muzzles and a general loss of that handsome carriage, gaiety and elastic action for which the breed is noted and so much admired. This state of things, fortunately, did not last long, and now it can be said that the small dogs of three pounds or four pounds weight have all the quality that we can wish and can easily beat the larger ones in type. A word of warning may not be out of place. In breeding for fineness in head breeders should beware of getting the head too narrow and long. It is possible to have too fine a muzzle also; Poms. do not want a muzzle like a bird's beak! Three pounds is not an uncommon weight now but most breeders and exhibitors prefer a dog of four to five pounds and a bitch of five to six pounds. it is folly and cruelty to breed with tiny bitches which should only be kept for show purposes or as pets. The most fashionable colour of the moment and the latest development is the clear golden orange. it has caught on with such a blaze that all the other beautiful colours, except the orange-shaded sables, are being neglected. The beautiful blacks are now scarce : they once predominated : so also are browns, which were the rage some twenty years ago, but breeders have become disillusioned by the difficulty of breeding browns sound in colour. Blues too had their day : but it passed owing to the failures so far of all efforts to establish pure light blues. It is difficult to understand why this should be when such lovely blues are

PomWorld.com June 2012

produced in other breeds. Parti colours, so showy and pretty, are now never seen, a fact to be deplored for they shared with wolf sables and creams the distinction of being great coat growers. Wolf Sables are just now enjoying something of a revival : there are several winning well in shows and they are outstanding. as regards type and coat. Whites are all but extinct. When the kennel club in 1912 withdrew challenge certificates for the larger Pomeranians, it was the death blow of the whites for it has been found impossible to establish a strain of white miniatures without losing type. So that oranges and orange sables now predominate at shows. The dark redcoloured Pom. has had its value in helping to establish soundness and depth of colour, but cannot be compared for beauty to the brilliant golden orange which is now fairly easy to breed. Moreover the biggest prices are paid for good specimens of golden orange. In character the Pomeranian is second to none in intelligence and devotion to his owner. he is preeminent as a house dog, can be trained to play games and tricks which he thoroughly enjoys. He can also be as quiet as any other dog, which many people refuse to believe. It is all a matter of training. The noisy, yappy Pom. is a terror of the past. If he still exists anywhere the owner is to blame for encouraging him as a puppy. A bad habit of barking incessantly can and is often acquired by puppies of all breeds and not confined to Poms. who, with a little trouble, can be taught to become most efficient watch dogs. The Pom. is hardy and healthy, easy to keep in condition, is long lived and retains his youthfulness to a great age, and when his time comes, there is no dog leaves a greater blank behind or is more mourned by his owners than the Pomeranian.

Miss Hamilton and the Rozelle Pomeranians

The first President of the Pomeranian Club was Miss Hamilton. Miss Hamilton was also one of the founding members of the Ladies Kennel Association. Miss Hamilton owned the first two champion Pomeranians. Champion Rob of Rozelle and later Champion Konig of Rozelle. Miss Hamilton lived with her mother Mrs Hamilton in Bath. Miss Hamilton bred Pomeranians, Pugs, St Bernards and Greyhounds. Mrs Hamilton had a keen interest in exotic birds.

Thoughts on Pomeranian dentition By Dr Peter Chow The subject of teeth will definitely bring out much angst among many pomeranian exhibitors. It is not uncommon to see a pomeranian mature into beautiful representatives of the breed only to be kept out of the ring due to lost dentition. The main reason our poms lose their teeth is really due to periodontal infection. This is the region of the gums around the tooth that holds everything together. Therefore as the gum infection progresses, the gum recedes, the periodontal ligaments supporting the teeth also loosens and the tooth gets progressively more shaky until it dislodges. When dogs get gum diseases, it seems to deteriorate even faster than in humans, probably due to the fact that they chew relatively harder food and the ligaments are subjected to more stress. Pomeranians as a breed tend to depend more on mouthbreathing and tend to have drier mouths. This also predisposes them to gum and teeth problems as salivary flow and saliva itself has definite cleansing and protective properties as well. Bacteria related to gum diseases Many strains of bacteria are found in these diseased gums, some of the chief culprits are strains such as Actinomycetemcomitans, P. Gingivalis etc. These strains of bacteria are mostly anaerobic, which means that they need to thrive in environments of very low oxygen content. To eliminate these bacteria, one of the most effective way is thus to disrupt these low oxygen environment. A simple illustration of this is tooth brushing, where mechanical movement of the bristles disrupts the stagnant gum pockets. I will list some of the common methods pom owners used to manage their poms’ teeth. I do not adopt all of them myself but will try to give my opinion on them. Teeth Brushing This is one of the most effective way in caring for our dog’s teeth. In brushing, the plaque is removed, giving little substrate for bacteria related to gum diseases to thrive on. However this has to be done on almost daily or two days frequency to be most effective. This is because plaque builds up within a day, hardens in 2 days, after which it will be difficult to remove. This requirement of diligence on the owner’s part often presents some problems, especially for owners or breeders with large number of dogs. Toothpaste is often used with brushing. The composition of toothpaste varies greatly. In different way most of these components do contribute towards greater effectiveness of brushing. In humans, we know toothpaste in general help us clean teeth up to 30% more effectively. However the owner should still be mindful not to use excessive amounts as the main beneficial component in brushing is still the mechanical removal of plaque.. Oral rinse/ swab The most effective mouthwash to date for gum diseases would have to be chlorhexidine. It is most effective at 1.5- 2% concentration. However it is often only available at 1% concentration at drugstores. This is because at 2% it is very bitter, stains teeth quickly, and with long term use may affect taste buds on the tongue. I know that my poms hate the taste of it, at even 1%, so it gets doubly difficult to clean their teeth or swab their mouths, even with the most cooperative poms. Some breeders I know use hydrogen peroxide as a swab. Hydrogen peroxide is a very strong oxidant. It works by oxidising the area, eliminating these anaerobic bacteria. Because of its strong oxidsing characteristics, peroxide is also a teeth whitener. You will probably have found that peroxide can make your pom’s teeth nice and white, but you have to be careful because if there is a cavity in the teeth that you have not noticed, it can enlarge the cavity significantly, to the extent of hurting the pulp. In high concentrations, peroxide can also damage the periodontal ligaments as well as be toxic. If your pom has receded gums and roots of the teeth exposed, they can also be demineralised by the harsh action of peroxide.

Thoughts on Pomeranian dentition- Page 2 Water additives I have seen a number of water additives at pet stores, which claim to protect gums and teeth and reduce foul odours. Many of these carry active ingredients which are also found in pet toothpaste, namely, bicarbonate, enzymes such as amylases, chlorophyll etc. I have not personally found them effective, probably because my poms do not seem to agree with the taste of water with such additives and seemed to reduce their water intake. While I agree that many of the active ingredients do work from a theoretical perspective, I feel that with such a mode of delivery, ie drinking water, the contact time is too short to allow them to be truly effective. Presence of plaque on the teeth may also impede their action. Bone chewing The common knowledge is that chewing on bones help keep their teeth clean. This is because the tough chewing actions breaks up the hardened built up of plaque. It also stimulates saliva flow which is beneficial. I do give my poms bones from time to time but care should be exercised because of the fine teeth that many of ouir show poms have, which are at risk of fracture with bone chewing. Suitable bones must be selected and they must also be supervised to make sure they do not choke. I personally do not like to feed raw hide because they soften with chewing and I am concerned that a chunk may come off and cause the pom to choke. Nevertheless I suppose with careful supervision they work fine too. I have found the Nylabone brand of chews quite useful, especially the one with little ribs. However not every of my poms seem to enjoy chewing a piece of rubber as much as they do with a real bone. Vet visit Despite all our efforts to upkeep our poms teeth, it is not uncommon to pull back the cheek and notice a fair amount of tartar which have built up on the teeth without our notice. At such occasions it may be necessary for a dental scaling visit at the vets. The poms are often put under general aneasthesia and subjected to manual or ultasonic scaling to remove their tartar. I personally do not fancy the idea of putting poms under general anaesthesia but I do acknowledge that there are many times when such visits are necessary. It is important to start scaling visits even before the teeth starts to become shaky, This is because once teeth mobility is detected, it is usually hard for the teeth to be firm again, even with subsequent care and elimination of active gum disease. Vaccines Pfizer has just released a vaccine (for selective dog use only) for gum disease. It does not seem to be available yet at where I am but I will be most keen to know how well it works and what other effects it will have with widespread use. Scientists have been talking about a parallel for human use for years but there does not seem to have any progress to date. My personal guess is that perhaps too many strains of bacteria are involved to have a truly effective vaccine. Finally I wish everyone success with managing their poms’ teeth. It is a common problem area, but compared to many other problems, eg skin disease, testicles, patellas, it seem to be a more preventable disease with good care. Cheers Peter Chow. Retained Deciduous (Baby) Teeth Normally by four weeks of age puppies acquire their deciduous teeth, commonly identified as baby teeth. Beginning around three months of age, the deciduous teeth are replaced by the bigger and stronger permanent teeth. It takes an additional three to five months for the permanent teeth to replace all of the baby teeth. Occasionally, the permanent teeth do not erupt immediately under the deciduous teeth, and therefore, do not force the baby teeth out. When a dog has both an adult and baby tooth at the same site, it is referred to as a retained deciduous tooth. In the dog, this usually occurs with the incisors or upper canine baby teeth.

What are the symptoms? In puppies with a retained deciduous tooth, a permanent tooth is seen alongside the baby tooth it was meant to replace. The permanent canine teeth usually erupt in front of the deciduous canines. Retained baby teeth is common in Pomeranians. What are the risks? Retained baby teeth frequently cause a crowding of the teeth along the gum line. This crowding displaces the permanent teeth so that they are out of line or grow at odd angles. The abnormal placement of teeth can interfere with the normal growth and development of bones in the jaws. They may contact the roof of the mouth causing injury and pain. Retained teeth may also die and abscess, causing mouth infections to develop. What is the management? Retained deciduous teeth should be extracted. This will usually require anaesthesia and surgical extraction. Check a puppy's mouth weekly until about seven months of age for abnormal teeth. Consult a veterinarian for an oral examination if any retained teeth are suspected. Ideally desexing your puppy and removing any retained baby teeth could be done simultaneously.
