The BA (Hons) Scheme in Design educates innovative forward-thinking designers who are able to give shape and invent desirable futures relevant for a rapidly changing society. The Scheme offers an extensive range of different Design Specialisms that cater for tomorrow’s designers: Advertising Design, Information Design, Media Design, Environmental Design, Interior Design, Product Design, Interaction Design, Service Design, and Social Design. This Scheme-based admission serves as an undeclared track. Students who enroll in the Scheme will first follow a common curriculum in Year 1 which offers them a year to identify their area(s) of interest and career aspirations, facilitating their Major programme selection in Year 2. Students are subject to further assessment criteria i.e. students‘ own choice, students‘ portfolio evaluation, interview performance, GPA and individual subject results in selection of awards at the end of their Year 1 study. We welcome candidates who are dedicated to becoming aspiring designers. Competitive candidates will possess these favourable qualities: Are you an expert in conceptualising spatial design? Are you a master in communication and producing high-quality visual content? Do you have unique ideas for improving the use and design of everyday products? Do you find it easy to imagine new services, innovation and entrepreneurial opportunities in the social and cultural sectors? Qualifying applicants must have a strong interest in design and possess creative curiosity, good visual skills and abilities, skills in three-dimensional or mixed media, the ability to explore and develop ideas, good language skills, and the capacity to solve problems. They will be interested in how design can address issues in today’s society and contribute to making the world a better place.

4-year Programme

Foundation, Clusters, Specialisms & the Curriculum The BA (Hons) Scheme in Design is a 4-year full-time study honorary degree. All students complete a common Design Foundation in Year 1, followed by a Design Cluster in Year 2, before focusing on their chosen Design Specialism in Year 3 and 4. Each specialism has a dedicated study pathway with some common subjects. Students graduate from the Scheme in one of the following nine Design Specialisms: Advertising Design, Information Design, Media Design, Environmental Design, Interior Design, Product Design, Interaction Design, Service Design, and Social Design. Year 1 Design Foundation: Common Basics The focus of Year 1 is to provide a broad-based foundation in common design skills, knowledge, and integration to enable students to become creative thinkers. Year 2 Design Cluster: Interdisciplinary Collaborations Year 2 students select one of four Design Clusters: Communication Design, Environment Design, Product Experience Design and Service Design. The four clusters provide a broad base of discipline-oriented study in preparation for specialisation in Year 3 and 4. Year 3 Design Specialism: Discipline Exploration Year 3 is the first year of discipline-specific study in one of the nine Design Specialisms offered: Advertising Design, Information Design, Media Design, Environmental Design, Interior Design, Product Design, Interaction Design, Service Design, and Social Design. Students explore their chosen Design Specialism through dedicated study pathways in discipline-specific subjects. Year 4 Design Specialism: Integrative Design Year 4 is the second year of the Design Specialism. This programme develops students’ critical and professional abilities in design. Students learn to tackle complex design issues through external client-focused and interdisciplinary studio projects. Please refer to Admission Essentials Book for details.

Our Senior Year Programmes are designed for those who would like to prepare themselves for promising careers in specific design disciplines through studies at an undergraduate level. Normal duration of the full-time programmes is two years. Applicants will choose a specific programme to get into upon application. Senior Year curriculum is available in our Bachelor's degree programmes on Advertising Design, Information Design, Media Design, Environmental Design, Interior Design, Product Design, Interaction Design, Service Design, and Social Design. It offers students a design education that is attuned to social trends and is sensitive to change. The School encourages its students to think critically, learn independently and in teams, experiment with dynamic, multi-layered design processes so as to weave culture and industry strands into appropriate social narratives. Core subjects of the issue-based design studio address contemporary aspects of human existence and the ambition to project desirable futures. Mindful of the cultural implications of technology, projects are developed with the user at its centre, and a critical appreciation of social trends, reflecting a humanistic teaching and learning mode running across the scheme’s design disciplines.

Tempre Go A temple service for preserving traditional culture and fostering community cohesion by CHAN Kwun Hei Kristy, TANG Ming Wai Vivian (Advertising Design), CHEUNG Lok Yiu Nicole, KWAN Lai Yin Rex (Communication Design) Tempre Go aims to preserve traditional culture and foster community cohesion in Hong Kong by enhancing local temple services. Despite their historical and social significance, intangible cultural heritage such as traditional craftsmanship and social norms are at risk of disappearing. Temples can play a crucial role in preserving these traditions and supporting traditional crafts. Tempre Go acts as a bridge between temples and daily life, encouraging believers to actively participate in and support traditional culture. The project addresses barriers that prevent people from engaging with temple culture by leveraging digitalization and technology. Through a customisable and continuous temple experience, Tempre Go fosters social connectedness and ensures the sustainability of traditional culture. Tutor: Westley WONG

Honorable Mention, Professional category, European Product Design Award 2022

BookThrough is an experimental project that explores books, book culture, community, and design's role in providing readers with an alternative literary experience. Led by interdisciplinary design-entrepreneurs, the project began by examining challenges in Hong Kong's book community. Through research methods like user shadowing and interviews, the team identified obstacles such as fragmented reading resources, reader disconnection, and limited literary interests. To address these issues, they developed a digital platform that fosters a sustainable and scalable book culture. The platform incorporates habit data visualisation, information sharing, and gamification to engage readers and catalyse the future development of the book community. Gah Zeoi A peculiar dining experience that incorporates concepts of Regenerative Agriculture by Annie LEE, LI Suen Chi Belle (Communication Design), CHAN Man Kwan KaKa, LEUNG Po Yee Bowie, TSANG Chun Kit, YEUNG Nga Lam Jasmine (Social Design) Gah Zeoi offers a unique dining experience that embraces the principles of Regenerative Agriculture. The design team believes that agriculture can serve as a bridge to reconnect humans with the natural world. They have a mission to introduce the concepts of regenerative agriculture to the people of Hong Kong and foster a renewed bond with our environment. Through Gah Zeoi, participants are educated about regenerative agriculture through symbolic elements and thoughtful design incorporated into the menu, printed materials, and services. By creating an extraordinary dining experience, it is aimed to spark profound reflections among participants about their consumption habits, their relationship with the environment, and the tangible actions they can take to create a better world. Make friendship visible

Programmes—Advertising Design

An advertising campaign for a social network app by TONG Ming Wai Scarlett BA (Hons) in Advertising Design Zenly is a social app that addresses the challenges young people face when arranging meetings with friends due to societal lateness norms. By enabling continuous realtime location tracking, Zenly allows users to spontaneously meet up with nearby friends, freeing them from rigid schedules and undesirable situations. This removes physical distance and information barriers, expanding social boundaries and enhancing relationship security. This advertising campaign for the app utilises various touch points. Posters are designed to highlight the app's instant location sharing, making friendships visible at any moment. Social media pages are created to introduce Zenly to local residents, sharing app information through a unique perspective. Viral online videos are produced to creatively demonstrate how the app easily locates friends, portraying a transparent city. Lastly, a citywide hide and seek competition is proposed to generate brand awareness. These initiatives aim to foster stronger connections and a sense of community among friends, driven by Zenly‘s features. Tutor: Francis HUNG

Enjoy Being Toxic

18 Prohibited Curry Chips is a spicy potato chip from Japan, known for its outstanding spiciness that makes people feel pain when they eat it. The chips use ‘ghost pepper’ to make spicy powder, which gives it a spiciness rating of 1,001,304 Scoville units! This is an advertising project for the 18 prohibited super spicy curry chips. This idea is based on toxic relationships. Inspired by the intriguing connection between toxic relationships and the enjoyment of spicy food, this advertising project explores their shared characteristics. Both experiences can be exhilarating yet painful, evoking strong sensations and addictive tendencies. Central to this project is the Cantonese term ‘犯賤’, translated as ‘toxic.’ This term captures the concept of individuals knowingly engaging in self-destructive behavior, despite the consequences.

eSee Mart Redesigning shopping experience for people with visual impairment by LAU Sin Yu Daisy BA (Hons) in Communication Design eSee Mart is a design concept developed in collaboration with a local supermarket, specifically tailored for people with visual impairment (PVI). In Hong Kong, approximately 2.7% of the population was visually impaired in 2021. While the city has established guidelines for barrier-free design, they often overlook the specific needs of users and fail to promote independent living for people with disabilities. The primary objective of eSee Mart is to empower PVI by creating an inclusive shopping experience that enables them to accomplish daily tasks independently and comfortably. Key design features include a portable tactile map, visually impaired-friendly wayfinding signage, near field communication (NFC) smart shelves, and supermarket configuration. It is hoped that this design can be widely implemented in other locations, providing PVI with greater autonomy and independence in their lives. Tutor: Brian KWOK

Low-carbon lifestyle app for the anxious generation by LEE Kayeun Kay BA (Hons) in Communication Design Doomsday Odyssey is a personalised low-carbon lifestyle reward app for Korean Generation Z, designed to address the unsustainable cycle of production, consumption, and disposal. By linking with enterprises, the app calculates users' daily, weekly, and monthly consumption, transforming it into carbon footprints that reflect their consumption habits and materialistic urges. This visualisation creates self-realisation and incentivises sustainability by offering point-based rewards for reducing consumption. The app also incorporates a Metaverse service tool, where users' consumption is translated into carbon footprints. As users meet their personalised consumption goals, they are rewarded with virtual neighbours, endearing earthlings, fostering a sense of continuity and encouraging sustainable actions. Doomsday Odyssey aims to empower users to make conscious choices and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Are you coming to my party ? I have been waiting for you… by FONG Ching, LAI Wing Yan, LI Hau Ching Wyonna & SO Kin Man BA (Hons) in Digital Media The story sets out in a deserted game centre stood near an American western highway in the 1980s. The game centre is shrouded in mystery and avoided by locals. Seeking refuge, a desperate fugitive found himself hiding in the center's restroom, grappling with a peculiar mask stuck to his face. He accidentally stumbled into a bizarre birthday party, where a lonely child wept and cried out for attention. Reluctantly, the fugitive accepted the child's invitation to play, deepening their bond as they explored the enigmatic game center together. However, the child still held an unfulfilled wish, fixating on his birthday cake and longing for a lit candle to make a birthday wish in the presence of his newfound friend... Tutor: Dr Amelie CHAN

The Love We Miss

This short film explores the tender bond between Horus, a profoundly visually impaired individual, and Summer, a caregiver on a short-term contract. It delves into themes of romance and personal growth. Despite Horus's visual impairment, he perceives the world through heightened emotional and human connections. Their relationship blossoms, revealing shared qualities and affection, yet they remain confined to being good friends. Drawing inspiration from our own emotional journeys, encompassing family love, friendship, and falling in love, this story highlights how our emotions shape our approach to life, decisions, and finding meaning. The project team’s aim is to convey a sense of blessedness, whether fleeting, sweet, or enduring, without fixating on a perfect ending. Instead, we emphasize the pursuit of happiness and the resonance that can be found within the relationship between Horus and Summer. Tutor: Dr Amelie CHAN

HABITUAL VICISSITUDES The notion of transparency, translucency, and opacity by WONG Tak Mei Antoinette BA (Hons) in Environment and Interior Design Habitual Vicissitudes is a project that examines different design components for manipulating visibility in high-density living environments. It investigates the manipulation of transparency in architectural elements, such as frosted glass and perforated screens, to create a balance between privacy and connection to the surrounding environment. The project considers factors like user behaviour, cultural backgrounds, and neighbour relationships to determine the desired level of visibility. By testing materials and adjusting dimensions like transparency and reflectiveness, the project aims to accommodate individual preferences based on factors like height, age, and gender. The Pak Kok Village Project A material exploration focusing on the use and reuse of existing village material to create a reconstruction catalogue by Nunez SUBHADRA BA (Hons) in Environment and Interior Design This project focuses on materiality and the reuse of abandoned structures in the Pak Kok village. It aims to create a handbook of suggested material reuse options to revitalise the village's structures. The handbook uses both existing materials and decayed materials from old buildings to provide a sustainable, achievable, and affordable construction method. The project prioritises preserving the village's history and aesthetic by avoiding expensive new materials. It consists of three stages: Stage I involves extensive research and material collection, Stage II proposes a design approach based on the research, and Stage III explores construction possibilities and tests the feasibility of designs in terms of uses, spatial qualities, and materials.

A customised indoor exploration and navigation solution for deaf-blind individuals by CHAN Cheuk Yin & TIN Wing Kam BA (Hons) in Interactive Media PolarisMaps aids independent travel for deaf-blind individuals through customisable indoor navigation apps. It targets to accommodate varying levels of deaf-blindness, enabling confident, comfortable and safe navigation in shopping malls. By providing an immersive experience, the project enhances target users’ motivation and active engagement with the world. The project offers visual and auditory features, with a three-step solution for Planning, Virtual Exploration, and Actual Exploration. With voice commands and built-in voiceover capabilities, users are allowed to obtain shop lists, bookmark favorites, and plan their travel. Virtual Exploration includes 3D simulation and Haptic feedback, creating a safe and immersive virtual reality experience of the mall environment. Actual Exploration incorporates an Indoor Navigation App UI compatible with UWB sensing technology and a smart white cane with vibration function, assisting users in avoiding obstacles. Requiescat is a comprehensive platform that offers services for individuals to design a personalised end-of-life journey and provide emotional comfort to their loved ones. Users can plan for their pre-death arrangements, such as recording goodbye messages, creating wills, arranging legal authorisations, and establishing medical instructions, including organ donation preferences. The platform collaborates with a local funeral company to assist in funeral arrangements. Family and friends are invited to join in completing the deceased's wishlist, creating a meaningful and memorable activity.

A multifunctional short-range public mobility system for Hong Kong future microcities by CHOI Wing Sing Foster BA (Hons) in Product Design Quexa is a versatile short-range public mobility system designed for future microcities in Hong Kong's New Territories. It meets the growing mobility demands of compact city structures. Quexa offers intuitive multi-user functionality, adaptable features, and ample storage for deliveries. It harnesses green energy and provides convenient docking and battery-swapping stations. Quexa can operate autonomously and be redirected as needed. Additional features include mobile device connectivity and an assistive user mode for the elderly. It has a range of up to 30km on a full charge, equivalent to approximately 15 medium round trips in future city towns. Tutor: Scott CHIN

WonderBlocks

This project provides early emotional education support for children aged 3 to 5, enhancing development and preventing emotional disorders. With limited resources, over 60% of children lack necessary emotional skills. By improving accessibility, more children can benefit. Over 80% of parents face challenges in their children's emotional education. The project aims to support children and parents in emotional management for widespread acceptance and utilisation of emotional education. This product includes Emotion Bells, enhancing sensory experiences and building an interactive emotional library. It also features Story Cards that improve the ability to express emotions through visible methods, showcasing varying levels of intensity. These accessories support emotional development and communication.

Reborn Repair Hub

Programmes—Social Design

A service for reborn seekers to rebuild self-worth and social relationships by repairing old objects by CHEUNG Wing Sze Wincy BA (Hons) in Social Design The Reborn Repair Hub is a reborn restorer programme that aims to empower previously marginalised individuals with drug experience in Hong Kong. Traditional rehabilitation programmes limit their autonomy and hinder integration. This programme encourages participants to form teams and repurpose old objects into practical and artistic products. By sharing personal experiences, they teach the public about transformation. The programme focuses on rebuilding self-worth, strengthening social bonds, and fostering personal growth. Participants gain confidence, contribute to their community, forge new connections, and engage with their past experiences by restoring objects. Community Dot Dot Dot

This project collaborates with Tsing Lam Alliance Church in Tsing Yi’s St. Paul Village. It has two phases: ’Social Design Trial‘ and ’Innovation Community Practice‘. The design team taught social design to teenagers through games and community engagement in phase one. They also co-created five small projects with the church teens to address the issues and insights they discovered from fieldwork and house visits, allowing them to serve and innovate from a social design perspective.

This is an on-going project that has received a 10-month support from the Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Fund (SIE Fund), a fund backing many social entrepreneurers to develop innovations creating social impact in Hong Kong.
